Hart Hanson, the creator of Bones and the person responsible for the newly announced Fox television series Backstrom, will be giving a free lecture at his alma mater. “From Here to There: A Nice Canadian Boy goes to Hollywood” is at UBC’s Chan Centre on February 5 at 8pm. The lecture is part of Hanson’s week-long stay at UBC as Cliff Writer-inResidence. Hanson got his Master of Fine Arts at UBC and taught there. He now lives in Malibu. Bones is in its ninth season and prior to that he was executive producer of Judging Amy and Joan of Arcadia. His experience on this side of the border includes writing and producing shows for Beachcombers, North of 60, The Road to Avonlea, and Stargate. Southlands: 71 years of blazing trails By Kelsey Klassen

S

livered between a busy truck route and the Fraser River, and bookended and broken up by golf courses and parks, you’d be forgiven for never having discovered the community of Southlands. Unless you ride horses, that is, in which case you might be overdue for a visit. Southlands — an area of Vancouver where homes are outnumbered by horses three (sometimes five) to one — is proud enough of its agricultural quirks to have at least three societies dedicated to its preservation, but it is still somehow one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets. No other Canadian city offers rural living this close to the hustle and bustle of the downtown core. But being identified as Vancouver’s beating equestrian heart would never be enough to protect this fragile community from development. It took some foresighted forefathers in the mid-1940s to lay the emotional and physical foundation of Southlands, and decades of sweat equity from subsequent generations to create something continually worth fighting for. South Vancouver’s answer to Stanley Park, a stroll down Balaclava Street off South West Marine Drive will raise the curtain on a striking pastoral scene: blue herons dotting tidal ditches, coyotes slinking off in the morning fog, ponies leaning over wooden fences to pull at the grass with their teeth. Its story is told in the mud tracks running alongside the lanes, turned up under the hooves of horses lead-

ing to and from Southlands Riding Club at the north-west corner of 55th Avenue and Blenheim Street. In fact, if the community of Southlands is a beating heart, the riding club is its 16-acre soul. AJ McPherson, Claire and Telf Maynard, Walter Koerner, William H. Malkin. These names are woven into the fabric of the city, and represent just a handful of the visionary Vancouverites who had helped establish the SRC as a positive force in Vancouver. Last year marked the SRC’s 70th anniversary — a time to reflect on all the 350-member club has accomplished on its peaceful flood plain by the Fraser River, and all the club has done for the city since its inception. According to a fascinating retrospective written by the SRC’s Alison Martin, it is the members of Southlands who built and maintain the 50 km of riding trails winding through the University Endowment Lands, and pushed in 1989 for the area to become Pacific Spirit Park; who brought therapeutic riding for children to Vancouver in 1973; who, in 1959, marched on city hall in full riding gear to successfully challenge the city’s intention of converting invaluable greenspace into baseball fields; and who, almost every year since 2001, have attracted several thousand horse lovers to their rollicking Country Fair. Friends of Southlands, a society formed to preserve the character of the area, adds that, in keeping with the City of Vancouver’s goal to be the Greenest City by 2020, Southlands’ urban agricultural element has been identified as an important

Chinese New Year events According to The Epoch Times, the Year of the Horse is regarded as a year of quick victories, unexpected adventures, and surprising romances. “Chinese people believe the horse is one of the most important creatures in the world for mankind to befriend,” the article states. “The elegant horse symbolizes a strong character with aspiration for straightforward momentum and goals.” It goes on to say that people born in the Year of the Horse are sporty and artistic, well-mannered and wellgroomed, free-spirited and always on the move, tying in well with the notion that this will be a good time for travel. And to check out these events! 41st ANNUAL CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE: Signature event in Chinatown features lion dances, marching bands, performances and more. 70,000 spectators expected. Feb. 2 beginning at Millennium Gate on Pender at 11am. Free.

For Southlands riding coach Margot Vilvang, it’s always the Year of the Horse. Rob Newell photos resource in contributing to food security in the city. Society treasurer Jen Maynard, who, with her husband, Olympic jumping coach Rick Maynard, owns the only commercial farm left in the area, doesn’t hesitate when asked what Southlands means to Vancouver. “I’ve been all over the world as a dressage judge and have seen lots of... ‘horsey’ areas, and Southlands is absolutely unique. You have horses 10 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from UBC, 10 minutes from downtown,” she says passionately. “We have people who come from all over just to enjoy the area, visit the donkey on the corner and visit the goat that lives along the trail. Or they come out to our place [Southlands Heritage Farm] and visit the pig and the sheep.” She recalls with horror a time in the ‘80s when the generous building lots were being exploited by mansion mongers. “If you had an acre, you could build a 20,000-sq. ft. house. Which was ridiculous,” she explains brusquely. The City responded by creating a Local Area Plan and forming a committee to address the area from Marpole to the UBC border, which drew more than 100 people every week for two years. Maynard, whose family has been a Southlands presence for three generations, didn’t miss a single meeting. There have admittedly still been development skirmishes since, but you almost don’t notice the battle scars for the beauty. As she walks along the SRC track, second generation Southlands resident and Vancouver Pony Club coach Margot Vilvang stops to watch a flock of Canada Geese drift down in perfect formation onto the Grand Prix field. “I love to watch them land; watch them put their feet down and just float on in,” she marvels. Even in the cold, the distinct smell of stables lingers intoxicatingly in the air for blocks. Vilvang sighs contentedly and says she can’t imagine living anywhere else. “As children, our playground was the entire area. Our boundaries were that we weren’t allowed to

go in the Fraser River, on the two golf courses, or above 49th. To this day I know every person who lives in every house, and all the horses.” And, as riders call out salutations as they pass by, it feels as though some things will never change. But Vilvang, a decorated competition veteran, says the sport itself is evolving. “I feel that to some degree it has gotten to the stage where the one with the most money wins.” She adds, encouragingly, that there are “other types of competitions and lots of other things you can do with horses. Like this huge natural horsemanship craze that’s taken off,” referring to the playful new animal-first method of training. For a sport that bears the stigma of elitism, in Southlands, riding is accessible to all levels of ability and interest. Newcomer and busy PR principal Tiffany Soper says her horse Holly is still adjusting to the area after moving from Squamish, but Soper feels right at home in the “little peace of country heaven.” “I was just blown away that I could have my horse so close to where I live in Kits,” says the self-professed country girl with the big-city career. “I was a little bit unsure at first if I would fit in, since I’m not a serious competitor, but everyone’s been so nice and there is so much support.” With Southlands so close to the city, Soper has even been known to stop by after work to throw in a flake of hay for the horses while still in her high heels. And while the true glamour of the sport lies in seeing a powerful horse and well-seated rider working in unison, the uninitiated too often soak up the fashion statements, polo circuit gossip and sipping of Pimms, which can be a dangerous ideal. As all three women attest, horse ownership is not something to be entered into lightly, and requires more time, money and dedication than a horse will ever return. Vilvang confirms this with a wry smile: “You could come and feed the same horse every day for 20 years; he’ll still turn around and kick you.”

Love, loss and Layton Olivia Chow shares stories from remarkable life at February 7 event By Sabrina Furminger

D

ays before his death in August 2011, Jack Layton penned a heartfelt letter to Canadians. In it, the federal NDP leader — who, but three months previous, had led the party to a position it had never held before: that of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition — implored Canadians to arm themselves with good faith when faced with challenging paths. “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair,” he wrote. “So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” Layton’s letter was released upon his passing, and those final lines spread across the planet like wildfire, via social media and sidewalk chalk. The letter also references “my partner, Olivia” — meaning Olivia Chow, Layton’s wife, the Member of Parliament for Trinity-Spadina, and a whirlwind force of change in her own right. That turn of phrase — “my partner, Olivia” — served as a telling reminder that Layton hadn’t fought the good fight all on his own, and had, in fact, been part of a dynamic partnership driven by passion and soul-churning love. Nearly three years after Layton’s

passing, Chow pulls back the curtain on their great love in My Journey, an expansive memoir released on January 21. Chow will read from her biography, and speak about her storied life, at Performance Works on Feb. 7 (WritersFest. bc.ca). “I figured, either you do it or you don’t,” said Chow on the phone from Ottawa about why she decided to put pen to paper. That became the 328-page My Journey; aptly named, because readers are in for quite a ride. It begins with Chow’s childhood in Hong Kong, where the willful rapscallion — named for a character in Twelfth Night — revels in adventures and American television, and fails Grade 3. We follow Chow to Toronto, and into a family unit wracked by violence, frustration, and the grim realities of immigrant life. We witness her rise through the political ranks, and begin to identify her connections to the causes she champions: violence against women; healthcare; the environment. And we are invited into her partnership with Layton, and into a home bursting with art, mismatched furniture, wine, music and mutual admiration. Chow seems to explore nearly every aspect of their life together in My Journey. She employed numerous tactics to put these experiences to paper: a daily goal of 1,000 words per day; dictating to an iPad; wading through thousands of press clippings, photographs, and love letters; and lingering dinners with old friends and colleagues around her kitchen table. In many ways, Chow grieved the loss

Olivia Chow, wife of the late Jack Layton, will read from her biography at Performance Works Feb. 7 of her soul mate under a national microscope. Other people might have raged against having to grieve so publicly, but Layton and Chow believed in the power of community, and Chow says she has benefited from the outpouring of support she’s received from Canadians. “I think Canadians are very generous, and it feels like a big, giant, warm blanket supports me. This blanket keeps me going and warms me up when times are not necessarily going well.”

culture Spice goddess; social scientist headline Public Salon

T

he Food Network’s “spice goddess” and a “Zeitgeist interpreter” are two of the people who will be participating in Sam Sullivan’s next “speed dating for ideas.” Bal Arneson and Charles Montgomery will join elephant advocate Rosemary Conder, architect Bruno Freschi, choreographer Crystal Pite, social change digital visionary Steve Rio, UBC pharmaceutical sciences associate dean Kishor Wasan and Chinese modern art critic Shentian Zeheng as speakers at the February 19 Public Salon. As you can tell by the eclectic mix of speakers — each of whom are invited to expound on a subject of their choice for seven minutes — the discussion is always lively and thoughtprovoking. It’s the former Vancouver mayor’s way of bringing people together to share ideas in the hopes that the conversations become part of this city’s dialogue. An article on BCBookLook.com says, “Like Douglas Coupland, Charles Montgomery is a

gifted zeitgeist interpreter who has an instinct for a distinctive turn-of-phrase; a social scientist who can mix a broth of serious ideas with an entertaining style; a card-carrying internationalist who is nonetheless distinctly a product of Vancouver.” Montgomery is the author of The Last Heathen: Encounters with Ghosts and Ancestors in Melanesia and, more recently, Happy City: transforming our lives through urban design. Bal Arneson’s cookbook, Bal’s Quick and Healthy Indian, won the 2011 Canada award for best Asian cuisine cookbook at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. She’s launched a new cooking show, Spice of Life on the heels of her third book. Crystal Pite (and members of Kidd Pivot) will be performing a section of the upcoming Tempest Replica at the Public Salon. Tickets are $20 in advance at TicketsTonight. ca, $30 at the door and, for $120, you can mingle with the speakers at the pre-salon sponsor’s dinner. — Martha Perkins

They hired SSDG, the Vancouver design company that did Miku restaurant and Terminal City Club, to do a multi-million-dollar renovation. “We felt it was time to improve Harbour Centre and bring in something that changes it dynamically,” says general manager Richard Lui. “If we were going to reinvest, we felt we had to do it right.” The results have been worth it, with “bountiful accolades” pouring in from tenants, which include SFU’s downtown campus, the Vancouver Lookout Observation Deck and two levels of shops and services. Often the menus are made for 10 people, too, with 10 to 12 lavish courses served family style. Fish — It is an everyday Chinese dish but it’s important to have it to welcome the New Year. The type of fish does not really matter, but it should be served whole and near the end of the meal. Budget-friendly Chinese New Year Eve menus will serve deep-fried frozen fillets, but the nicer menus will feature fresh fish (typically rock cod) steamed upon order. Fish is symbolic of wealth and abundance, so it is eaten at the end to bring luck in the new year. Remember not to eat the entire fish and to save the leftovers for the following day. Having leftover fish the next day enhances the “abundance” factor. Recommendation: Dynasty, Grand Dynasty, Sea Harbour, Red Star Seafood, Fisherman’s Terrace Chicken — Much like the fish, it is also an everyday Chinese dish that’s part of a Chinese New Year’s Eve meal. Again, it

has to be served whole — with the head and tail. It is disrespectful to serve parts of a chicken, and because Chinese New Year is a time for family gatherings and reunions, a whole chicken represents togetherness. Recommendation: Jade Smoked Grandpa Chicken at Jade Restaurant in Richmond Dried Oysters, Black Moss, Conpoy, Chinese Shiitake Mushroom, Abalone, Lettuce and Pork Tongue/Hock — It’s not the actual name of the dish, but it has some if not all the ingredients listed. It comes in many variations, but the dried oyster, black moss, pork and lettuce are quite standard. It does not look appetizing to many Westerners, but it is the most symbolic dish to have during Chinese New Year and is made specifically for the holiday. The oysters are called “ho see” in Chinese, and by changing the tone it means “good things

A dried oyster dish, such as this one at Fisherman’s Terrace, can be interpreted to mean “good things to come” on Chinese New Year. Mijune Pak photo to come”. The black moss in Chinese is called “fat choy” (Gong Hay Fat Choy) which also means prosperity, and the pig represents strength, fertility and honesty. The lettuce in Chinese is “sang choy”, and again by changing the tone it also means “growing wealth”. It’s actually a very special and luxurious dish because half the ingredients are considered Chinese delicacies. Recommendation: In Metro Vancouver: Red Star Seafood, Kirin Seafood, Empire Seafood Restaurant, Top Gun J&C, Rainflower Restaurant, The Jade Seafood Restaurant, Fisherman’s Terrace, Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant, VivaCity Seafood, Dragon’s View Chinese Cuisine, Dynasty, Grand Dynasty, Sea Harbour, Shiang Garden and many others. See Mijune on Breakfast Television on Feb. 13 and find her at the Sonoma Country Winery Dinner: Rodney Strong Vineyards at Brix Restaurant on Feb. 4. She will also be at Vancouver Magazine’s “Big Night” on Feb. 7. Tickets to both events online. Find out more about Mijune at FollowMeFoodie.com or @followmefoodie.

The key ingredients to a Super Bowl party By Kelsey Klassen

M

ore than 20,000 fans lined the streets and enthusiastically beat on the windows of the Seattle Seahawks’ buses as they pulled away from their practice facility, The Washington Post reported on Monday. Some of the fans even chased the convoy down the road. Other groups lined overpasses or followed the buses on Interstate 405 on their way to the Seattle airport. The fan turnout might have something to do with this being Seattle’s only second Super Bowl appearance in its 38-year history. And while Vancouver is typically hockey crazy, we can’t be blamed for being drawn into the football fever taking hold of our sister city to the south. Heck, the logos even look similar. The team will play the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl for a chance at Seattle’s first major professional sports title since the SuperSonics won the NBA championship in 1979. So if you’re planning to throw a Super Bowl bash this Sunday, satisfy your hungry guests while they couch-quarterback to victory (hopefully) with this hearty chili recipe, courtesy of the best-selling cookbook: Memphis Blues: Bringin’ Southern BBQ Home.

Commodore opens doors for the big game Not keen on having a bunch of hooligans in your living room? Hosted by Team Radio, fans are once again invited to watch the biggest American football game of the season at the Commodore on Sunday, February 2. Catch all the Super Bowl action on three massive screens, surrounded by comfortable couches on the dance floor with chances to win prizes. The event is free, however guests are asked to register at Ticketmaster.ca beforehand to guarantee entry. The doors open at 2pm, and kick-off is at 3:30.

2/3 cup New Mexico or Ancho chili powder ½ cup garlic powder 2 tbsp ground cumin 2 tbsp dried oregano 2 tsp celery salt 2 tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp cayenne pepper ¼ tsp chili flakes 1 bay ;eaf 3 cups chicken stock 1 28 oz can whole tomatoes 1 28 oz can red kidney beans, drained Salt and pepper to taste Garnish (optional): Sliced green onions, grated cheese, sour cream. Chop the onion, celery and peppers into a medium dice. Add the oil to a stockpot over medium heat. Add the vegetables and sauté until soft. Mix in the meat and the seasonings. Cook for 5-10 minutes, making sure the spices don’t stick to the stockpot. Stir in the chicken stock and the tomatoes, crushing them with your hands as you add them. Add the kidney beans. Simmer over low heat, stirring often, for 2 hours. The whole house will smell great. Adjust the salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped green onions, grated cheese, or sour cream as desired. Serve immediately to hungry friends, or cool completely and store in the refrigerator for up to seven days in an airtight container. Super Bowl XLVIII goes down Feb. 2, 3:30pm PST. Tweet us your party pictures with the hashtag #SuperbowlYVR.

Fresh Sheet

Local Food & Drink Happenings by Anya Levykh

THE DISH Ten years ago, Blue Water Café & Raw Bar executive chef Frank Pabst came up with an idea to promote less popular varieties of local and sustainable seafood. Items such as sea urchin, geoduck, and jelly fish were practically unheard of. Today, they are part of mainstream seafood menus across the city, in large part thanks to the efforts of Pabst and other like him. Now in its tenth year, the annual Unsung Heroes menu has become a much-anticipated event that draws thousands to the restaurant every February for tastes of lesser-known fruits of the sea. This year’s menu of share plates runs Feb. 1-28, and includes delights such as the sea urchin mousse in a crispy bird’s nest shell with ponzu jelly and avocado sauce ($12.50), chilled sea snails with saffron aioli ($9.50), and sardine stuffed with pine nut gremolata and wrapped in a crispy blanket with shaved fennel salad ($11.50). Small quantity, big quality

I

t always fascinates me to learn the back story of those who’ve opted to ‘live the dream’ and start their own winery. Whether we’re talking former financial advisors such as Cynthia and David Enns of Laughing Stock Vineyards or erstwhile sommeliers such as Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn of JoieFarm, it’s intriguing how previous experience might have by Kurtis Kolt an effect on their current world of wine. But what to make of someone who grew up on a small farm in Saskatchewan, played college hockey for Michigan State, got drafted to the St. Louis Blues, trained as a sommelier in Montreal and worked in a New York City law firm on Wall Street? Well, I guess once you’ve crossed all of those things off of your list, as Summerland’s Tyler Harlton did, amongst the only things left are butcher or baker or local winemaker. Harlton dove right in to his latest career with gusto a couple years back, sourcing grapes in small batches from around the Okanagan and putting his personal touch on each release under his eponymous “TH Wines” label. Annual production is tiny ( just over 1,000 cases at the moment), and while he’s looking to increase production to ensure his business is sustainable, he assures his growing legion of fans that his wines will always be made “by hand.” His wines are unfussed, fresh expressions of Okanagan terroir; both food-friendly and enjoyable to ponder on their own. His Viognier Pinot Gris blend ($25) champions a bounty of orchard fruit, peaches, pears, apples and the like, finished with a sprig of

hallmark Okanagan sage. Local seafood or Asian food pairings? You bet. Last spring, I was so impressed when I first tried Harlton’s wines, and equally frustrated that myself and most others hadn’t been aware of the superb quality of them, that I offered to partner up and produce a small tasting with him, to introduce him to a handful of local sommeliers who might otherwise not cross his path. My hunch was right and enthusiasm contagious. His wines can now be found at a handful of private stores around Vancouver and the North Shore, by the glass at JOEY Wine Bar and elsewhere. While BC has many wineries producing tens of thousands of cases apiece of great wines, it’s tiny producers like this that are both important and just-as-worthy aspects of both the present and future of BC wine. There’s not a lot to go around, so grab his wine while you can. TH Wines 2012 Pinot Noir | Okanagan Valley, BC | $30 | THWines.com Tyler’s latest release is yet another lively example of how well-suited Pinot Noir is to our region. Technical geekery includes a hand-harvesting on Oct. 10, crushing and destemming that evening, a fermentation after a brief cold soak and neutral French oak ageing (for texture rather than flavour) for nine months. The result is a swirl of blackberry and raspberry with cardamom, clove and a couple flecks of basil, ideally served with a hint of a chill. Order winery direct or find it (for a couple bucks more) at various private stores like Liberty Wine Merchants.

our contestants will take to the Urban Fare Cooking Stage at the BC Home + Garden Show to determine Vancouver’s top home chef. The competition is called Chopping Block as a tip of the chef’s white toque to Chopped on the Food Network. Hosted by Ned Bell on February 22, each competitor will have a set time to create something from a black box of ingredients supplied by Urban Fare. Judges Vikram Vij, executive chef of Vij’s and Rangoli (and a Food Network favourite), Ryan McDonald, Urban Fare’s executive

chef, and 102.7 The Peak host Laurie Logan will whittle down the winners of each stage until there’s only one. That person will receive a deluxe flightseeing and dining experience for four courtesy of Urban Fare and Helijet. From now until February 16, fans of the Home & Garden Events Facebook page can vote on their favourite Urban Fare products C to be used as the mystery ingredients. If you think you have the chops to be a M participant, sign up as a VIP at ThePeak.fm Y and tell them why. CM The BC Home + Garden Show is Feb. 16-23 at BC Place. redit Suisse Real Estate Asset Management and SwissReal Group revealed their confidence in Vancouver’s office market by launching construction of their long-planned $200 million Exchange office tower at 475 Howe Street despite not having any tenants lined up. “The race is on,” effused marketer and CBRE Canada president Mark Renzoni. “The race to secure the first deal, the race to complete construction and the race to welcome the first tenants” Swiss architect Harry Gugger and Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson joined Renzoni at the launch January 23. The 31-storey, 369,000-square-foot building is set to be the second tallest LEED platinum office building in Canada and it is the country’s first LEED platinum heritage conversion. Leed platinum is the highest designation for sustainability by the Canada Green Building Council. The project incorporates part of Vancouver’s former stock exchange building, which was built in 1929. Its construction employs an estimated 400 workers. The building will use half the energy of a traditional office building, said Credit Suisse. The design includes solar thermal panels, storm water retention and reuse and geoexchange thermal regulators.

Giving voice to a strong sense of self Eleanor Collins, the first black performer to be given her own TV show, sings in Saturday’s concert to celebrate Black History Month By Martha Perkins

O

n February 1, 94-year-old Eleanor Collins will be one of the performers at Stayed on Freedom, “a musical celebration of Black History Month” at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church. It leads to an interesting conversation starter: how do you celebrate black culture while also steering away from the concept that race is what defines us? How do you recognize race as something important while also realizing that it shouldn’t make any difference in how we feel about one another? Mrs. Collins’ story could indeed be told in terms of struggle — when she and her husband bought a house in Burnaby, there was a neighbourhood petition to keep them away — but that’s not what she chooses to dwell on. Her story could be told in terms of achievement — she was the first black entertainer to have a nationally broadcast television show, beating Nat King Cole to the honour — but that’s not what she focuses on either. Eleanor Collins lives in the now. She’s aware of the past, hopeful for the future but very much present in the present. “It get it from my mother,” she

says from her home in the Lower Mainland. “It was her philosophy to keep yourself going one day at a time — blossom wherever you land, everything will work out....” Her mother, Estella May Cowen, left Oklahoma in the early 1900s, believing that in Canada she could find a better life. That too was the goal of Richard Ellis Proctor, a “Creole Indian” from Oklahoma (his father was half Cherokee.) Their journeys merged and after they married, they raised three daughters in Edmonton. Eleanor was born in 1919. “When I started school there, I was very isolated. I was a lonely child but I was a lonely, different child. Students can be, without realizing it, cruel. But the thing that would hurt me most was the teacher, the way she was teaching history. She was speaking of different countries in a very prejudiced way. ‘These people in hot countries were lazy.’ I thought, ‘What’s she passing on to these young minds?’ “I was a rebel then. I’d pick up my pencils and walk out of the room and say ‘I’m not going to take this from this lady. I know she’s not talking very nicely about these people.’” How on earth did Eleanor’s mother react when her young daughter showed up at home on a school day? Her mother understood Eleanor’s reaction but also knew her daughter needed to stay in school. The principal took a similar tack and talked young Eleanor into coming back to class. “Imagine trying to explain to a seven-year-old that the teacher is getting older and will retire next year.”

At CBUT you were judged only by your talents The Collinses had created a community by breaking down barriers by teaching others how to see beyond the colour of their skin. In 1978, Mrs. Collins was asked to sing in a Canada Day celebration in Ottawa. Eighty thousand people gathered on Parliament Hill and she became very emotional as she looked out at the sea of people, each one

continued from previous page Aware already of life’s injustices, and the need to know when to confront and when to bend, young Eleanor took refuge at home. “It’s not a matter of the colour of your face,” she says of her inner struggle to reconcile what she knew to be right with all the wrongs she’d have to witness. “It’s each person trying to figure out ‘Why am I here?’” It wasn’t until she moved to Vancouver in 1939 — a January visit when crocuses were in bloom sealed her desire to leave the prairie cold behind — that she started to feel she was among people who were not only like her, black or white, and appreciated here. She sang with The Three E’s and The Swing Low Quartet with her sister Ruby Sneed. “The musicians accepted my talent. I got an okay from them,” she says. One of those people was guitarist and bandleader Ray Norris, who formed a quintet that would include Fraser MacPherson and Phil Nimmons. He got her involved with CBC’s CBUT, one of the first stations to break barriers. In 1954 it put on a musical, Bamboula: A Day in the West Indies, the first to have a mixed race cast. “You have these visionaries who went past the idea of colour,” Mrs. Collins says. “These vibrant people were so far advanced in their thoughts and ideas. It was exciting, just wonderful. Each one of us said we’d bring our best.... We were suddenly a family. I was accepted for me.” She got the role through Len Gibson. A dancer, his career had been given a huge boost when Katherine Dunham, whose father was a descendent of slaves, asked him to fill in for a member of her well-known dance troupe during a Vancouver stop. What she learned as a performer was to “set yourself aside and let it come through.” She’d put everything into the song, creating an ephemeral bond between her and the music. “That’s the real reason they called me a jazz singer — I never wanted to sing the song the same way twice.” It’s her personality that stopped her from becoming a blues singer. A person who never gets depressed by rainy days because she always knows the blue skies will return, if she’d have to sing a blues song, she’d sing it upbeat. Similarly, she didn’t want to do her version of Billie Holliday’s “Strange Fruit”, a reference to lynched black men hanging from trees. “I know nothing of that life,” Mrs. Collins says. “I did not live it. I was a Canadian.” The year after Bamboula, CBC offered Mrs. Collins her own show and she was able to give back to all the people who had supported and encouraged her by having them perform on the nationally broadcast The

holding a candle. “I suddenly realized how grateful I was to be a Canadian for the first time. I was thinking of my parents who had decided Canada was going to be their country because it was going to be better. I was very grateful. I was a true Canadian.” For a story on how Eleanor Collins manages to look and feel so young, go to WEVancouver.

I WILL

HEAR

Eleanor Collins on CBUT with Dave Robbins Orchestra (l960s). Photo courtesy of Eleanor Collins’ personal archives Eleanor Show. (She’d perform on numerous other CBC shows as well.) Behind the scenes, Eleanor had her own busy life with her “wonderful husband” and their four children — Richard, Judith (Maxie), Barry and Tom. As she raised and nurtured her family, she relied heavily on the values and lessons her mother had instilled in her. When the Collinses first moved into a tract of war-time houses on Franklin Street in Burnaby, neighbours started a petition to keep the black family away, saying they were probably bootleggers. The entire family had a difficult beginning in their new neighbourhood. “We lived across from the school and were the only black family for miles around. The children were accosted with names. They’d come running home crying and not understanding what was wrong with them. What did it mean? I thought, ‘Mrs. Collins, here’s something you have to change and help your children.’” She volunteered at school functions and taught music to neighbourhood Girl Guides to make sureeveryone would view her like any of the mothers on the street. “I thought, ‘There is a way. I must win them over, give them lessons on how to do it.’” Their house became such a popular gathering place that her husband recalls shaving one day and, looking down at all the children crowding around him, realizing none of them were his.

Stayed on Freedom! features the Marcus Mosely Chorale, City Soul Choir, The Sojourners and TriVo, as well as Eleanor Collins and the legendary singer/actor Leon Bibb. A special guest is cultural historian Linda Tillery, the founder of the Cultural Heritage Choir. The concert starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for students and seniors or $150 for six tickets. Go to TheMarcusMoselyChorale.ca.

Dull, crude and downright mean — the latest Zac Efron-led romantic comedy, That Awkward Moment, strives for edgy laughs but winds up just plain offensive. Three best friends (Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan) vow to stay single to maintain solidarity but things get complicated once two of them get serious with their respective girlfriends. Jason (Efron) begins falling for Ellie (Imogen Poots) after exchanging some witty banter in the local bar while Daniel (Teller) starts seeing his best friend Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) in a different light. From the outset, it’s painfully unclear just who this movie is catered towards; it’s far too raunchy for the early teen crowd and too juvenile for an older demographic. The truly unfortunate misfire is that the trio of lead actors is a talented bunch of guys who have excelled in previous roles but are instead relegated here to asinine humour and sexist behaviour. At one point, Efron’s character is lamenting a decision to attend his girlfriend’s father’s funeral because it would mean they’re ‘serious’. The only thing laughable about the film’s writing is the sometimes appalling and archaic sexist gender roles that set the movement back a couple years. To make matter worse, That Awkward Moment earnestly tries to avoid typical genre clichés but the movie’s romantic climax between Jason and Ellie in a bookstore makes the saccharine gags in Love Actually look subtle by comparison.

The Past elevates the present THE PAST

Starring Bérénice Bejo, Ali Mosaffa, Tahar Rahim Directed by Asghar Farhadi Following up the Oscar-winning A Separation with his first film shot outside of Iran, writer-director Asghar Farhadi continues to mine domestic turmoil for exceedingly rich drama. And while fraught relationships elevate meal preparation and plumbing repairs to white knuckle affairs, it’s Farhadi’s adroitness at incrementally unspooling character and plot details that draw us deeper into a seemingly simple storyline that ultimately proves a tangle of divided loyalties, questionable motivations and gnawing grief and guilt. Having been summoned from Tehran to Paris to finally grant Marie (The Artist’s Bérénice Bejo) an amicable if overdue divorce, Ahmad (Ali Mosaffa) discovers that much has changed during his extended absence. Marie’s daughters from a previously marriage have matured considerably and she now shares her home with Samir (A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim), a sullen new boyfriend with a son of his own as well as a considerable cross for his conscience to bear. Rarely do we see characters on screen in such a pronounced state of domestic transition, the palimpsests from previous relationships clearly visible. The three leads deliver exemplary performances but it’s the younger actors who elevate the film into something exceptional. In every case, the progeny prove remarkable mirror images of their parents, not only in their startling physical resemblances but also in their parallel conduct. As the players continue to reveal troubling new aspects of themselves, secrets come to light and, much like in A Separation, a mystery presents itself. However, these thriller elements are hardly as enthralling as Farhadi’s incisive, clear-eyed depictions of commonplace chaos and how those we hold dearest are occasionally capable of bringing out the worst in us. — Curtis Woloschuk

movies Sorrentino unleashes stylish melancholy THE GREAT BEAUTY

Starring Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Directed by Paolo Sorrentino Rome wasn’t undone in a day. Rather, it’s been coming apart at the well-tailored seams for a spell. Or so suggests director Paolo Sorrentino’s visually resplendent, Fellini-indebted film that serves as a dual character study of sharp-witted, self-deprecating author Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo, wonderfully devilish and droll) and The Eternal City he calls his dysfunctional home. Understanding that there’s perhaps little sense to be made of a schizophrenic metropolis where the pious congregate and corrupt prosper, Sorrentino instead embraces its inherent ridiculousness without sacrificing the shroud of melancholy. Much like The Wolf of Wall Street, The Great Beauty understands that convincingly depicting decadence and depravity demands some over-indulgence on the filmmaker’s part.

Introduced to us amidst a cacophony of thudding electro and kaleidoscope of gyrating sequins, Jep couldn’t look any more disenchanted with the extravagant bacchanal staged in honour of his 65th birthday. Four decades on from his first novel without a follow-up to show for all of his supposed promise, he’s reached a point in life where the deaths of intimates and absence of new experiences invite self-reflection. Fortunately, this soul-searching is hardly a sedentary pursuit. Instead, it sees him drifting through what could be Rome’s troubled dreams, encountering pretentious performance artists, lovelorn strippers and saintly nuns while shifting from one surreal locale (the capsized Costa Concordia luxury liner) to the next (a carnivalesque botox clinic). Increasingly, we’re left to wonder if that opening salvo of revelry wasn’t, in fact, the death throes of a decadent society. If so, it must be said that Sorrentino throws one hell of a memorial service. — Curtis Woloschuk

The standard TFT display surrounded by race-inspired analogue dials in the instrument panel looks nice in this interior, although it looks a bit simplistic. There are a few notable traits missing — the first being chrome. Not only is it going out of fashion, but it can also be blinding when reflecting all of the sunlight pouring into a convertible. The ignition button, paddle shifters and driving mode toggle switch are finished in a nice anodized bronze colour.

O

ver the years, many amazing cars have caught our eye. But only one earned Enzo Ferrari’s praise as “the most beautiful car ever made.” That car was the Jaguar E-Type. Mr. Ferrari wasn’t the only one to appreciate the iconic Jag’s look. In 1996, the New York City Museum of Modern Art added a blue roadster to its permanent design collection. Interesting fact, however, is that Sir William Lyons — the co-founder of Jaguar — was completely underwhelmed by the finished product. He didn’t like the look of the backend and didn’t think it would sell. He couldn’t have been more wrong. When the E-Type was unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 it created a sensation. Unfortunately, it has been 40 years since the last E-type was made. No Jaguar since (arguably no car) has stirred up the emotions like the E-Type had. Jaguar is hoping to end that with its spiritual successor, the F-Type.

Features

2014 Jaguar F-Type

Design Ian Callum, a highly respected car designer and current director of design at Jaguar, oversaw the design. And while the new F-Type is intended to recreate the soul of the legendary E-Type, it is not just a retro re-make — it is a truly revolutionary design that is fresh, aggressive, and simply beautiful. This is a truly modern sports car with an all-aluminium body. The long hood and short rear deck give the F-Type proper roadster proportions, and its grill and air intakes are more aggressive than any Jaguar before. Callum aimed to create a car that was as sleek and as smooth as jets. To that end, there are no protruding door handles or rear wing and the spoiler remains flush until you reach 100 km/h. The F-Type is available in four variations, each having unique styling cues. The base model is available as a coupe or convertible. The F-Type S, also available in coupe of convertible trim, is a bit more aggressive with gloss-

The welcome return of a loved classic black accents, a front splitter, rear diffuser, and 19-inch wheels. The F-Type V8 S is only available as a convertible and the most visible difference is the exhaust tips doubling and moving outward. F-Type R models are only available in coupe form and boast exotic car levels of performance.

Performance Jaguar wanted the F-type to be a fine handling car that would still maintain high level of refinement on the road. And they have achieved just that. If you leave the driving settings in normal mode, it’s surprising smooth and comfortable. The hydraulic steering is sharp, but never twitchy and there’s loads of grip. If you want to play, put the suspension in dynamic mode.

Then you can get that aggressive feel right into your hands — it remains completely flat through the corners. Dynamic mode also quickens throttle response, makes steering heavier, and makes shifts from the excellent eight-speed gear box faster. If you’re driving a convertible and get tired of the wind in your hair, you can raise the fabric roof in 12 seconds. With it up, it’s surprisingly quiet — that is unless you turn on the active exhaust. The sound of this car is phenomenal. The exhaust note is so “raw”, it’s amazing it made it into production. Each of the four versions of FType comes with its own supercharged engine. The showpiece F-Type R has a 5.0-litre V8 boasting 550 hp and can go from 0-100km/ h in 4.1 seconds.

The V8 S also has a 5.0-litre V8. It produces 495 hp and can get to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, which is plenty fast in a car without a roof. The model most buyers will want is the F-Type S, with its 380 hp, 3.0-litre V6. It can still do 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, but because the V6 is lighter than the V8, this car is not as nose heavy so it’s a bit sharper to drive. The least glamorous is the base F-Type and its 340 hp, 3.0-litre V6. It’s still fast enough (0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds), but it doesn’t come with features like the configurable dynamic mode, active sports exhaust, or a limited slip differential.

Thumbs Up

Environment

The 2014 Jaguar F-Type is the embodiment of what a modern sports roadster should be, and no other car on the market matches its emotional appeal.

The cabin is highly driver focused with its few auxiliary controls within easy reach.

0% FINANCE ON 2013 SELECTED MODELS 20

January 30 – February 5, 2014

The F-Type is not a cheap car, but when taken into consideration with all its features, it’s quite reasonable. Pricing starts at $76,900 for the base model, 88,900 for the S and $100,900 for the V8 S. Pricing for the R has not been released. Standard equipment includes 8” inch colour touchscreen display, Bluetooth, Intelligent Start/Stop, keyless start, and rain sensing windshield wipers. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include panoramic glass roof (coupe models only), heated windshield, heated steering wheel, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, reverse traffic sensor, blind spot monitor, rearview camera. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the base model V6 are 10.4 city, 7.1 highway, for 8.9 combined.

Few cars have been as eagerly anticipated as the F-Type. Thankfully, its blend of classic styling and modern performance and features make it worth the wait. The sound of the exhaust is worth the cost alone.

Thumbs Down The infotainment system is a bit simplistic. Also, the lack of cargo space means this car can’t even carry golf clubs.

Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny r 8FFL PG +BOVBSZ ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): On my 15th birthday, I finally figured out that eating dairy products was the cause of my chronic respiratory problems. From that day forward, I avoided foods made from cow’s milk. I kept up this regimen for years. But a month ago, I decided to see if my long-standing taboo still made sense. Just for the fun of it, I gave myself permission to gorge on a tub of organic vanilla yogurt. To my shock, there was no hell to pay. I was free of snot. In the last few weeks, I have feasted regularly on all the creamy goodies I’ve been missing. I bring this up, Aries, because I suspect an equally momentous shift is possible for you. Some taboo you have honored for a long time, some rule you have obeyed as if it were an axiom, is ripe to be broken. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Psychologist Daniel Kahneman, who won a Nobel Prize in economics, says that consulting experts may be useless. In his study of Wall Street traders, he found their advice was no better than information obtained by a chimpanzee flipping a coin. Meanwhile, psychologist Philip Tetlock did a 20-year study with similar results. He found that predictions made by political and financial professionals are inferior to wild guesses. So does this mean you should never trust any experts? No. But it’s important to approach them with extra skepticism right now. Upgrade your trust in your own intuition.

INDEX IN BRIEF

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): I’m a big fan of logic and reason, and I urge you to be, too. Using your rational mind to understand your experience is a very good thing. The less stock you put in superstitious head trips and fear-based beliefs, the smarter you will be. Having said that, I recommend that you also make playful use of your creative imagination. Relish the comically magical elements of your mysterious fate. Pay attention to your dreams, and indulge in the pleasure of wild fantasies, and see yourself as a mythic hero in life’s divine drama. Moral of the story: Both the rational and the fantastical approaches are essential to your health. (P.S. But the fantastical needs extra exercise in the coming weeks.) CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Sorry, Cancerian, you won’t be able to transform lead into gold anytime soon. You won’t suddenly acquire the wizardly power to heal the sick minds of racists and homophobes and misogynists. Nor will you be able to cast an effective love spell on a sexy someone who has always resisted your charms. That’s the bad news. The good news is this: If you focus on performing less spectacular magic, you could accomplish minor miracles. For example, you might diminish an adversary’s ability to disturb you. You could welcome into your life a source of love you have ignored or underestimated. And you may be able to discover a secret you hid from yourself a long time ago.

COMING EVENTS

LEO (JULY 23-AUGUST 22): Cosmopolitan is famous for offering tips on how to spice up one’s sex life. Here’s an example: “Take a few of your favorite erotically appealing flavor combinations, like peanut butter and honey or whipped cream and chocolate sauce, and mix up yummy treats all over your lover’s body.” I recommend that you don’t follow advice like that, especially in the coming days. It’s true that on some occasions, silliness and messiness have a role to play in building intimacy. But they aren’t advisable right now. For best results, be smooth and polished and dashing and deft. Togetherness will thrive on elegant experiments.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21): Can you imagine what it would be like to live without any hiding and pretending? What if you were free to say exactly what you mean, unburdened by the fear that telling the truth might lead to awkward complications? Such a pure and exalted condition is impossible for anyone to accomplish, of course. But you have a shot at accomplishing the next best thing in the coming week. For best results, don’t try to be perfectly candid and utterly uninhibited. Aim for 75 per cent.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22): Kenneth Rexroth wrote a poem called “A Sword in a Cloud of Light.” According to my astrological analysis and poetic intuition, you will generate the exact power you need in the coming weeks by imprinting your imagination with a vision of a sword in a cloud of light. I don’t want to get too intellectual about the reasons why, but I will say this: The cloud of light represents your noble purpose or your sacred aspiration. The sword

it’s fine if you store up far more than what you can immediately use — because right now is also a favorable time to prepare for future adventures when you will want to call on extraordinary levels of resources, help, and inside information. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20- FEBRUARY 18): Extravagant wigs became fashionable for a while in 18th-century England. They could soar as high as four feet above a woman’s head. Collections of fruit might be arrayed in the mass of hair, along with small replicas of gardens, taxidermically stuffed birds, and model ships. I would love to see you wear something like that in the coming week. But if this seems too extreme, here’s a second-best option: Make your face and head and hair as sexy as possible. Use your alluring gaze and confident bearing to attract more of the attention and resources you need. You have a poetic licence to be more charismatic than usual. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19-MARCH 20): One of your anti-role models in the coming weeks is the character that Piscean diva Rihanna portrays when she sings in Eminem’s tune “Love the Way You Lie.” Study the following lyrics, and make sure that in every way you can imagine, on psychological, spiritual, and interpersonal levels, you embody the exact opposite of the attitude they express: “You’re just gonna stand there and watch me burn / But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts / You’re just gonna stand there and hear me cry / But that’s all right, because I love the way you lie.” Avoid all situations that would tempt you to feel and act like that.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21): Every autumn, the Clark’s Nutcracker prepares for its winter food needs by burying 30,000 pine nuts in 5,000 places over a 15-square-mile area. The amazing thing is that it remembers where almost all of them are. Your memory isn’t as prodigious as that, but it’s far better than you realize. And I hope you will use it to the hilt in the coming days. Your upcoming decisions will be highly effective if you draw on the wisdom gained from past events — especially those events that foreshadowed the transition you will soon be going through.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23-SEPTEMBER 22): You are not as broken as you may think you are. Your wounds aren’t as debilitating as you have imagined. And life will prove it to you this week. Or rather, life will attempt to prove it to you — and not just in some mild, half-hearted way, either. The evidence it offers will be robust and unimpeachable. But Virgo: Will you be so attached to your pain that you refuse to even see, let alone explore, the dramatic proof you are offered? I hope not!
