Sing with Pride SHOREFest

Velopalooza!

As if it wasn’t enough to have the night sky over English Bay burst to life with the Honda Celebration of Light. On each night of the fireworks competition, there’s SHOREFest — free live music on two stages and a vendor village from five until the fireworks at 10. Since it’s blanket-room-only at English Bay and Sunset Beach for the fireworks, it’s wise to come early in the day with your picnic, sunscreen and dancing shoes. The July 27 headliners are Serena Ryder (pictured) and Grapes of Wrath; on July 31 it’s Fred Eaglesmith and Daniel Wesley while on August 3 the headliners are Deep Dark Woods and Mother Mother. But there’s also Dawn Pemberton, Northcote, Buckman Coe, Good for Grapes, Red Bull Air Show, The Good Lovelies, The Boom Boom Booms, River and The Road, No Sinner, Greg Drummond, and Head of the Herd. For a detailed schedule go to Shore104.com

No matter what side of the bike lane you’re on, cycling is a fun way to explore the city. If you’re new to cycling, or want to find new ways to kick into gear, Velopalooza is offering two weeks of rides, workshops and socializing. There are 64 events from July 27 to August 11 and, not surprisingly, a lot of them include food, beer and wine. There are donut rides and pie rides for foodies; choral rides for singers; Gears and Queers night for Pride partiers; and a city lights ride for night owls. We are super intrigued by the Emperor’s New Clothes Ride, because didn’t the emperor discover he wasn’t wearing anything at all? For those who want to spend more time in the saddle, there are tours of Steveston and beyond and a leisurely Sunday afternoon ride. Take your pick at Velopalooza.ca.

Vancouver’s pride in its diverse communities will be very much on display this coming week, culminating in the August 4 Pride Parade. (For details see pages 8 to 14.) As people attend the festivities, they may hear a lot of a song called Pot of Gold (Rainbow.) The catchy dance tune by Vancouver’s Mandrake has been chosen as the 2013 official song by the Vancouver Pride Society. In case you want to sing along, some of the lyrics go like this: ride the rainbow for the pot of gold/ strong, proud, beautiful and bold/ alienated like we from another planet/ now we coming home (equal rights we demand it)/ it’s ringing in your ears so pick up the phone/ reply via text if nobody’s home/ let’s march like soldiers off to war/ parade around town, go door to door/ we’re your mothers, fathers, sons, daughters telling us no ‘hah’ don’t even bother/ that word we won’t hear ain’t coming in clear/ not criminals just a little bit queer/ ride the rainbow together with pride/ times are changing no need to run and hide/ just be yourself that they can’t deny/ so let’s unify and march with pride. PRIDE

Pride’s joyful megamouth Just try to keep up with Megamouth Media’s very busy Barbara Snelgrove By Christy Brookes

I

f her energy and enthusiasm weren’t so infectious, hearing Barb Snelgrove talk about her busy life would make anyone tired. With her signature black hipster-beforethey-were-hipster specs, this superstar is spinning a lot of plates as a publicist and project management professional, fundraiser, large event coordinator and public speaker who, oh yeah, also co-hosts QueerFM’s RELOADED, reports for OUTlook TV and freelances as a writer and columnist. Feeling exhausted yet? Well this doesn’t even touch on her volunteer work, which is so inspired and inspiring, makes you want to go out and do… and then do even more. She’s loud and opinionated but so damn nice about it; this chick is a doer that knows how to get ‘er done. A second-generation Vancouverite, Snelgrove not only loves her city, she absolutely adores her LGBTQ community, where she’s been out (literally) and about nearly her entre life. And while there were bits of volunteering here and there, in 1998 she decided to BAM! kick it up a notch, becoming a member of the Vancouver Pride Society’s board and creating the communications department for them. “I just love my community so much that I wanted to give back, it’s as simple as that.” Over the years, she’s been Pride Parade’s Grand Marshall and hosted the Pride stage; this year, on August 4, she’ll be getting in front of the camera doing Shaw’s television coverage for OUTlook TV. The volunteering hasn’t stopped there, with her fingers in a few other pies, such as Qmunity, The Glass Choir, The Gathering Place and the LOUD Foundation, which provides scholarships to up and coming LDBTQ teens to help further their education. It’s a wonder she has time to breathe, let alone socialize and make time for herself and her partner. A big part of Snelgrove’s LGBTQ community love is showered upon Davie Street. As

“I just love my community so much that I want to give back,” says Barb Snelgrove. Her community wants to give back to her, too. This fall the long-time Vancouver gay rights advocate is being inducted into Canada’s Queer Hall of Fame. Photo at the Pumpjack Pub on Davie by Lou Lou Childs photo

a well-known advocate and strong community leader, she was approached five years ago to join the LGBTQ Advisory Committee. Last year, a subcommittee formed which recently submitted a report to Vancouver City Council and the West End Planning Team, including recommendations for the revitalization of Davie Village. Her enthusiasm is palpable when she talks about the project. “Davie Street has always been a vibrant little community; we want to make it even more interactive and give it that ‘buzz’ where people eat, work, play and live. We don’t want it to be just another ‘faceless neighborhood’.” When asked where she her unbridled passion comes from, she has to think about it for a second. “I just love to make change and see people getting excited and involved themselves.” She’s already done so much and even though at times she feels she might need to slow down a bit, she knows there’s still so much to be done and is committed to ensuring that ever-important baton keeps getting passed down to the upcoming generations. If you’re thinking that someone who’s achieved so much and given back so immeasurably to her community should be recognized and honored for her work, you’re not alone. Snelgrove has been bestowed with many accolades and awards over the years, from Outstanding Community Member and Local Hero, to being named one of the 10 people making a difference in Vancouver. As recently as Saturday, Snelgrove won the Telus Pride Legacy Yellow award, for Community Superstar. Now, as one of the brightest jewels in her crown of lifetime accomplishments, she is being inducted into Canada’s Queer Hall of Fame, joining the likes of k.d. lang, Mark Tewksbury, and Pierre Trudeau. The ceremony is October 3 in Toronto and her fellow 2013 inductees are the late Jack Layton, Marie Robertson, Jane Rule, Harold DeMarais, Darrin Hagen and Rev. Brent Hawkes. “I am deeply honoured to be in such illustrious company. I don’t think it will sink in until I am actually in Toronto this Fall,” she says. To say this is a big deal would be a huge understatement. Barb Snelgrove has been an inspiration and a huge agent for change in the LGBTQ community and she’s deserving as hell.

Davie Street plan celebrates neighbourhood’s LGBT history By Christy Brookes

C

entred on Davie Street, roughly between Burrard and Jervis, Davie Village is recognized as the vibrant, happening hub for Vancouver’s LGBTQ community, and is long identified as a historical queer cultural destination. Residents and the community alike agree that it needs to continue being validated, valued and enhanced to ensure it grows, flourishes and prospers, putting it on par with other major queer destinations such as San Francisco and Amsterdam. Home to many shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs, and known for being the Pride Festival mecca, it caters to a variety of customers and exists within a very diverse community of micro-neighborhoods, providing a centralized meeting place for people to live, shop and play. As part of the West End Community Planning Process, a subcommittee of the LGBTQ Advisory Committee (which includes Barb Snelgrove, Dean Malone and Ron Stipp) was formed to ensure that a vital queer voice and presence be included in any future planning/development of the “North Davie” section of the West End. Numerous interviews and discussions took place with community and business leaders over a period of months as to how best develop the area

AND preserve its queer identity. The Davie Street Revitalization Report was drafted containing more than 30 recommendations, and will be presented to Vancouver City Council in the fall. The recommendations included suggestions for queer-identifying Davie Village, business development and tourism, reducing traffic flow in a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, and improvements to existing public and community safety services. As well, concerns about any intensive redevelopment of Davie Street were voiced to ensure that the historical purpose as a commercial and entertainment area isn’t threatened. Those who live in the West End and access Davie Village are interested in preserving Davie Street as part of Vancouver’s queer history. The consensus was overwhelming: beautifying the Village as well as creating something that identifies its distinct queer element, marketing Davie Village as a queer destination to bring increased economic benefit to the community (looking beyond Davie Street’s ‘queerness’ as more than just the Pride Festival and Parade Weekend), and creating ‘urban pastures’ by adding curbside seating to encourage the gathering and meeting of residents and visitors. It was also evident that increasing involvement and engagement of residents and visitors with the queer communities is paramount in making the Village an even more meaningful and exciting ‘gaybourhood’.

Davie Village Revitalization Report highlights “We need a bustling and alive entertainment district in the West End, and Davie Village is that home. With a thriving commercial district, Davie Village can be a strong complement to further residential densification of the West End away from the main commercial street.” Major concerns • area looking a bit rundown, with a general cleanup and upgrade needed • there’s a growing number of intoxicated transient peoples sitting and blocking sidewalk access • there is a lack in diversity of queer places to gather (most are centered around alcohol) • there is absence of spaces for queer youth, families and older adults to gather Recommendations • build or install some type of historical queer

WEVancouver.com

identifier/marker for Davie Village (more/larger Pride flags, or an archway) • create more public gathering spaces with installation of seating (parklets) • create West End signature events to draw more tourists • encourage establishment of specialty stores to highlight the diverse, funky and fun atmosphere of a revitalized Davie Village • reduce Davie St to two-lanes, extend sidewalks, install dedicated bike parking and eliminate rush hour parking restrictions • improve access to community policing centre Specific wishes • financial institutions, more independent businesses (fewer franchises), deli and butcher, more diverse price points, queer centre with queer-specific programming, hotel accommodations

PRIDE Where to eat (and ogle passersby) during Pride Watching the Bathing Beauties and Bodies

T

he holiday August weekend not only marks our BC Day holiday but also our celebration of Pride Weekend. Probably the busiest weekend in the year, some 400,000 people flock to the beaches and waters of English Bay to watch the largest offshore fireworks competition finale on the Saturday, followed by an estimated 700,000 people attending the Pride Parade the next day. Needless to say, it’s a happening weekend and there’s lots of great restaurants to showcase our city’s great culinary talents to locals and tourist alike!

For Wowing the Visitors Above the English Bay Bathhouse and Roof, The Keg Lounge transforms this area into a glamourous and cool VIP lounge experience, featuring hors d’oeuvres from grilled shrimp to prime rib sliders, a grill station and a cocktail bar by Keg Restaurants, live Canadian talent and VIP seating including the best unobstructed view of the fireworks! A perfect start to the Pride celebrations. Saturday, August 3. Proceeds to benefit St Paul’s Hospital Mental Health and AIDS.

Cycling with Pride Tour explores how the West End became home to Canada’s largest gay population By Kelsey Klassen

ant to take Pride Week to the next level? Take a trip through Vancouver’s Pride years with Cycle City’s inaugural Pride-themed bike tour. This limited-time tour offers a rolling journey through 35 years of Vancouver LGBTTQ history, people, places and events that have shaped the city of Vancouver and created the Davie Village — home to the

largest gay population in Western Canada. Expect secrets from Stanley Park, the evolution of pride in Vancouver, and stories from long-time residents. From terrorist bombings and hate crimes to world-renowned architecture, the Vancouver Pride Cycling Tour weaves a compelling rainbowed tapestry of stories about the West End neighbourhood. Tour guide Matt Oliver also aims to answer the question, “How did the Davie Village become the gayest and my most favourite place to live in the world?” over the leisurely (and almost entirely flat) two-hour bike ride. Tours are July 24 and 31 at 6 and 8pm, and August 2 and 3 at 4 and 6pm. The cost is $25 plus bike rental, and proceeds go to the Vancouver Pride Society. Head to CycleVancouver.com to book.

QMUNITY GAB YOUTH’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR A HAPPY AND HEALTHY PRIDE! 1. Wear sunscreen and drink lots of water! Hydration nation! 2. Use the buddy system! Stay with a friend, so you can look out for each other’s safety. 3. Safer sex is sexy! Barrier methods (like condoms, dental dams, etc.) reduce risk when engaging in sexy-times. 4. Consent is key! Remember, get consent before any kind of sexual activity. Consent can’t be given if someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 5. Gab Youth Workers will be at the Pride Youth Dance at the West End Community Centre on Sunday night between 8pm and 12am. Come find us and chat if you need support! Gab Youth is a hallmark QMUNITY program, a space to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, two-spirited, intersex, queer, and questioning youth. The past 18 years, Gab grew significantly. Core programs include: 1. Weekly “drop-ins”, for 2,000+ youth

2. Organizing special events: Queer Prom, the Pride Youth Dance (with the VPS), Queer Cabaret, and the Spirit Day Vigil. 3. Anti-homophobia/transphobia workshops for students, staff, parents, and youth serving agencies. Gab Youth empowers LGBTQ youth to be themselves. They actively “makes it better” by providing support. “When I heard about Gab Youth’s program at QMUNITY, I was afraid to attend. I wanted to, but I backed every time. I had not “come out” to my family. I gained the courage to “drop-in” during the Vancouver Pride weekend. Gab drop-ins, helped me grow as an individual. I made many new friends. Thanks to Gab Youth, I learned a lot about who I am.” - Ruth, 19 years old Support Gab Youth, become a monthly donor and help ensure the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ youth. Please visit www.qmunity.ca for information on how to donate. We look forward to providing space for youth to be their fabulous selves for years to come.

f you want any proof of how important the Queer Arts Festival is to Vancouver, consider what happened when, this past April, the federal government announced that it was withdrawing its funding to the Pride in Art Society. Within days, the public outcry was so loud and proud that Heritage Minister James Moore announced that he was restoring 75 per cent of the society’s funding for the event. “The overwhelming support we received was humbling and encouraging, and clearly contributed to the positive outcome of our campaign,” the Society says. The festival’s goal is to “create positive social change by promoting compassion, empathy and understanding through the arts.” QAF is a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary, three-week professional festival that celebrates the unique creative expression of Queer visual and performing artists. This year’s curated visual arts exhibition, community art show, innovative performing arts events, and inspiring workshops run from July 24 to August 9. Many events take place at the Roundhouse community centre in Yaletown. Don’t miss the highly-anticipated world premiere of Canada’s first lesbian opera, When the Sun Comes Out, commissioned by QAF. Written by composer Leslie Uyeda and poet Rachel Rose, it’s the story of forbidden love, divided loyalties and culture clashes set in the imaginery country called Fundamentalia — a place you’d only want to visit from the safe comfort of your theatre seat. It’s at the Roundhouse on August 5, 7 and 9 with the bar open at 6:30 so you can also take in the festival’s most far-reaching

ou want a rainbow? You have it, in brilliant, glorious Technicolour. Although not an official part of Pride, the Honda Celebration of Light happens to conveniently fall at the same time, giving the hundreds of thousands of people who converge in Vancouver just one more reason to celebrate. This year, the competition is between the United Kingdom (July 27), Canada

(July 31) and August 3 (Thailand), with each show starting at 10pm. There’s always competition among fireworks fans for the best viewing spots too, with everyone advised to stake out their patch of beach or grass early in the day. Several restaurants in the area also offer special viewing menus and the Keg’s Lounge on August 3 has the added incentive of raising money for St. Paul’s Hospital. The $129 ticket includes dinner,

two drinks, and an up-close performance by Mother Mother as part of the free ShoreFest music concerts. (See page 3.) Other highlights include the Red Bull Air Show, Concord Pacific’s Seawall Challenge, a volleyball and bocce tournament, the West End Street Fest and the YVR Observation Deck. A free app has schedules, maps and a simulcast of the fireworks’ soundtrack.

The first event will take place on July 27. “The Fireside Quintet will be playing for you,” says Sprowson. “One of the many amenities at River Park Place is the rehearsal hall, perfect for aspiring musicians.”

Following that, a basketball scrimmage will be held on Aug. 10. River Park Place will include an indoor basketball court as one of its amenities. “If you don’t own a grill, one of the amenities at River Park Place is a shared outdoor grilling and lounge area,” Sprowson says. Sophisticated Yaletown at Bosa’s Pacific Point By Kerry Vital

Luxurious sophistication is of the utmost importance at Bosa Development’s Pacific Point, located in Vancouver’s Yaletown area. With spacious floorplans, modern features and amenities and a fantastic waterside location that appeals to those looking for a vibrant neighbourhood, it comes as no surprise that the homes have been selling quickly. “Response has been overwhelming for Pacific Point,” says Bosa Sales and Marketing Manager Lisa Murrell. “There simply isn’t anything like it in Vancouver.” Pacific Point was purchased by Lower Mainland real estate legend Nat Bosa, who converted it from rental properties into condominiums. Each home has been completely redone, with new appliances, decor and plumbing. “Buyers know they are going to get quality and Nat Bosa’s value assurance backing the project,” Murrell says. Bosa has a reputation for quality homes and great customer service, and this continues with Pacific Point. “Sales have been brisk,” says Murrell. “A great selection of homes are still available.” The building holds 241 homes, ranging from 450 to 1,680 square feet. Buyers will find amazing views of False Creek, George Wainborn Park, David Lam Park, English Bay and dowtown Vancouver from every suite, along with high-end kitchens, elegant living areas and gorgeous bathrooms. The kitchens feature a quartzslab backsplash, polished quartz countertops and stainless-steel appliances, complemented by undercabinet task lighting, a contemporary undermount sink and imported Italian Armony Cucine cabinetry with soft-close doors and drawers, which also appears in the bathrooms.

Response has been overwhelming for Pacific Point,” says Bosa Sales and Marketing Manager Lisa Murrell. “There simply isn’t anything like it in Vancouver.” Laminate flooring is included throughout most of the main living areas, with large porcelain tiles in the den and chic carpeting in the bedrooms. The modern bathrooms have their own porcelain tiles and polished quartz countertops, as well as a fantastic soaker tub and an enclosed glass shower in select ensuites. In-suite laundry facilities come standard in every home, as well as custom roller blinds and solid wood entry doors that will easily block out the rest of the world. Homeowners have the choice of two interior colour schemes, Latte and Grey, designed by Cristina Oberti Interior Design. The Yaletown neighbourhood has been one of the big draws for buyers, with its large selection of restaurants, boutiques and outdoor activities in the area, along with a great public transit infrastructure. Dog-lovers will find a dog park at nearby Cooper’s Park, so man’s best friend will be right at home. On-site, homeowners will find a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness studio and yoga area, and a residents lounge with a pool table, as well as a grand double-height lobby and concierge. Homes at Pacific Point start at $364,900. For more information, visit www.pacificpointcondos. com, call 604-685-0855 or visit the sales centre at 1323 Homer Street, Vancouver every day except Fridays, from noon to 5 p.m.

Help for those at home A little help can go a long way when it comes to helping seniors stay in their homes. The West End Seniors Network offers friendly visiting, daily callers, accompaniment to medical appointments and grocery shopping. Call Melanie at 604-669-5051 to sign up or volunteer.

SENIOR LIVING Between these three women there are 271 years of life — and all the stories that go with it. Violet, centre, is 91 while Tanja and Ida are 90. They still live on their own and want to keep it that way for as long as possible. Their independence is important to them, but so are programs offered by the West End Seniors Network, such as the weekly knitting group. Martha Perkins photo

ot thinking about something in the hope it won’t happen is never the most effective coping strategy. And it definitely won’t work as a plan for dealing with the challenges of getting older. That’s as true for us as individuals as it is for us as a society. Given that the largest cohort of Canadians — Baby Boomers — is starting to qualify for seniors discounts and old age pensions, we need to be putting a lot more thought into how we’re going to provide, let alone pay for, an ever-increasing need for services. Eric Kowalski is the executive director of the West End Seniors Network, which has 860 members, eight staff and more than 200 volunteers. No matter how many stories he’s heard about seniors who are finding it more and more difficult to live on their own, “we can’t get traction” on the changes that need to be set in motion, especially when it comes to how expensive rents can be in this city. “It’s a decision we’ve made as a society to let the market be our guide to housing prices,” he says. If we want to make it affordable for seniors to stay in their homes, then we have to come up with the funding models that make it possible. “It’s an actual decision,” he says. “It’s not, ‘This is the way it should be.’ It’s a decision about what we want society to look like.”

Although news stories often focus on reno-victions — tenants who are tossed out of apartments so the landlords can make changes that allow them to charge more rent — think about the gradual impact of a modest two or three per cent annaul increase in rent. If you retire at 65 and are still in your home at 80 — which many of us will be — that’s 15 years of accumulated rent increases at a time when your income is barely changing. A $50 rent increase, on top of dozens of rent increases over the years, can suddenly become the tipping point between making healthy choices and becoming frail or ill. There are some rent assistance programs, such as the province’s Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters, but SAFER calculates its rents subsidies on a maximum rent of $700 a month. How many West End apartments are $700 a month? In the first year of the Vancouver Rent Bank, more than half of the loans went to people who are older than 55. “We need the provincial and federal governments to be more involved in creating more affordable housing for seniors,” Kowalski says. If a senior can’t afford the rent, or gets sick because they’re having tea and toast for dinner, think of how much it would cost to put them in a care facility. It’s far less expensive to provide services in people’s home, which is why the WESN is the lead agency for Better At Home. Programs include subsidized transportation

through a network of volunteer drivers and subsidies for light housekeeping. On a local level, the City of Vancouver has to be aware of how small things can be big obstacles for seniors. By adding more benches, the city would provide more places for seniors to rest when they walk to the grocery store. Sidewalks need to be better maintained so that people with mobility or sight problems don’t trip and fall. Encouraging more bicycle traffic is a great idea — Kowalski’s a cyclist — but if there are no parking spaces, elderly people’s friends and relatives will be less inclined to visit. An additional half-block walk to a bus stop can make a difference between getting out and staying at home. The group of Happy Hookers knitters at WESN’s Barclay Manor also say that while roundabouts can be attractive ways to slow down traffic in residential areas, drivers tend to forget about pedestrians and tall plants can block a motorists’ view. Although Kowlaski knows of the challenges seniors face, he also praises what’s been done to make the West End a liveable, friendly, and supportive neighbourhood. “It’s great, but let’s not rest on our laurels,” he says. And when we’re making decisions about where we as a society should be spending money, remember that doing nothing for seniors will cost us in the long run. Sooner or later, we’ll have proof of that in our own lives.

Are you a senior 65+ living in the West End? Do you need some help with housekeeping? Do you have trouble getting to medical appointments? Introducing the West End Better At Home Program! Better At Home helps seniors with simple, non-medical day-to-day tasks, such as laundry, vacuuming, cleaning the bathtub and other household chores. Cost is based on your annual income. We also offer a volunteer driver service for critical appointments. Seniors help cover gas and parking expenses. Where can you find out more? Contact Dora Ng at the West End Seniors’ Network via phone (604-669-5051) or email (betterathome@wesn.ca). Interested in becoming a Better At Home volunteer driver? Make owning a car cool again! Contact Dora to find out how even a small commitment on your part (minimum two trips per month) can make a huge difference in the lives of seniors in our community. Better At Home is funded by the Government of British Columbia which is providing funding to the United Way of the Lower Mainland to manage the project province-wide. The West End Seniors’ Network is the lead agency for our neighbourhood.

SENIOR LIVING

Experience the Dignity™ difference.

Staying connected Barclay Manor is a vital social hub for West End seniors By Martha Perkins

A

s a young woman growing up in London, England, Ida could never understand why the young women from Ireland and Wales complained about being homesick. London was such a vibrant, busy city, how could anyone want to live anywhere else? But decades later, when Ida’s husband died and she moved to Vancouver from Kelowna to be closer to her daughter, Ida suddenly understood how those young Irish women had felt. “My first years here, I was nearly demented,” Ida says, sitting at a table at Barclay Manor with other members of the Happy Hookers knitting group. Ida loved Vancouver as a city but it was an unwelcoming place as a home. “This has saved my life coming here,” says the energetic 90-year-old. Living happily on her own, Ida craved social interaction, whether it was just saying “Lovely day” to someone she passed on the street to being able to make new friends. A retired buyer for The Bay, she’d started to work when most women stayed at home — her husband was so upset he didn’t talk to her for the first three weeks — and she didn’t want to sit still just because she didn’t have a job to go to. She could afford to go to Mexico twice a year to escape the wet winter cold, but what about breaking the social ice in what can be perceived as a cold city? She found exactly what she needed at Barclay Manor, a gracious Victorian home owned by Vancouver Parks and leased to the West End Seniors Network for $1 a year. No one lives at Barclay Manor but it is home-away-from-home for hundreds of people who take advantage of its social programs, everything from the knitting group to Spanish classes to guest lectures to drop-in activities for people who are older than 55 The programming is as varied as the membership, says Eric Kowalski, the WESN’s executive director. “Seniors are like all of us — there’s a huge

The WESN’s goal is to keep them socially connected as a way of combatting the mental and physical risks of being isolated. “Loneliness is worse than any illness,” Ida says. “Human interaction is the most important thing and it doesn’t cost anything.” Evelyn, who’s 86, has brought her knitting needles to the Friday morning club but she’s soon on her way to volunteer at Clothes and Collectibles, a thrift store at Denman Place Mall operated by WESN to raise money for its programs. (The Happy Hookers sell their handcrafted items there, too.) Her husband is a lawn bowler who sits on the executive of his club so they both are very active. “I’ve never seen so many women with so many talents,” Eveylyn says, referring to the women who are happily chatting with each other as their knitting needles clack away.

very week, 28,000 men, women and children turn to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank for help. But for the people involved in making sure no one in this city goes hungry, it’s not enough just to feed people. “We want to focus on healthy, sustainable food for all, not just being an emergency provider, says CEO Aart Schuurman Hess. On Monday, he announced new partnerships with area farmers to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits during the summer months. “We’re taking it to the next level and actually having farmers grow for us, says communications manager Kay Thody. Local producers have long been supporters of the food bank by donating surplus foods. But with the new partnerships, they can plant their crops accordingly, knowing that the food bank has committed to being a regular customer. Not only that, but food bank volunteers will also help harvest the crops. Food bank staff were recently the test volunteers, going into farmers’ fields to reap what their planning had sown. “We’re really shifting the traditional boundaries, Thody said. “Because of our spending power, we can do so much more. Staff have made internal changes to allow for the sorting and preserving of fresh foods at its local warehouse. Another new initiative is the Collingwood Community Garden across from the food bank’s head office in Gastown. Produce that’s grown by volunteers will be gathered, prepared and shared at the Downtown Eastside Community Kitchen. Meanwhile, on Saturday the food bank got a big boost from the final leg of Five Hole For Food. Teams signed up to “play hockey for food on Granville Street as the cross-Canada food-raising initiative wrapped up in Vancouver, raising 340,000 pounds of food nationwide. Founder Richard Loat was inspired to found Five Hole for Food during the Vancouver Olympics, when Canadians united as a country over their shared love of hockey (and gold medals!) Realizing that hockey could be a vehicle for social change, his goal the first year was to raise 6,000 pounds of food. Loat came up with food banks as his charity of choice because “everyone knows what an empty stomach feels like, says Nicole van Zanten, the organization’s volunteer web director and designer. Schuurman Hess, the food bank’s CEO, was at Five Hole for Food on Granville, cheering on the teams, as well as the City of Vancouver for supporting such an initiative. Events such as this have a threefold benefit, he says: creating awareness of the food bank’s needs, building a sense of community and giving people a chance to have fun. To get involved with the food bank’s fresh food initiative, contact volunteer co-ordinator Devan Ritchie at devanr@foodbank.bc.ca.

This is local, that is local, but what really is ‘local’? FollowMeFoodie By Mijune Pak

W

here is the bacon from? Gelderman Farms in Abbotsford. And the beef? AAA from Alberta. How about the cheese? Les Fromagiers de la Table Ronde in Quebec. The lobster? Nova Scotia. We are “farm to table”. We are “local”. We are Canadian… local. Huh? Everyone is jumping on the “eat local” bandwagon, but at the same time many do not even know what it really is. “Local” is being tossed around and marketed to the point of losing authenticity. It is sad that the definition of “eat local” has been stripped away and it is often followed by “as local as possible” or “mostly local”. It gives us that bit of room to source East Coast oysters, French cheeses, use Asian ingredients, or serve Alberta beef without diners making a fuss. There is nothing governing the marketing of a menu, but at last there is a formal definition of “local”. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is adopting an interim policy which defines “local” as: • food produced in the province or territory in which it is sold, or • food sold across provincial borders within 50 km of the originating province or territory It is not the greatest definition, considering the various sizes of every province

and territory, but it is a start. On the other hand, do diners really care? Some do, for sure, but does it prevent them from eating it? I am very proud of our local products and will promote our farmers and growers who do a good job, but will I eat maple syrup from Quebec? Or strawberries in the winter? Yes, I will. I try to eat local and seasonal, but globalization isn’t going to stop and I don’t sneer at the fact that we have year-round raspberries or premium quality maple syrup from Quebec. Yes, we could lessen the carbon footprint by not buying them, but with every social change someone suffers. For instance, BC Blueberries are the #1 most exported Canadian fruits. Without those other markets, our farmers would

take a financial dive because BC alone could not support them all. We champion eating local, yet we want our economy to grow. Fruit for thought. The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets says sales were up 147 per cent in 2012 compared to 2006, injecting about $170 million annually to the local economy. So while eating local is showing economical growth, I can’t help but to wonder if there is enough supply for demand. It would be ideal if we could grow and cook everything using local ingredients, but BC just does not have the proper climate or resources to make everything. We can produce a lot, but not everything. I am not dismissing the importance of the local food movement, but I also think using selective imported goods is not shameful. For example, that Rassembleu Blue Cheese from Les Fromagiers de la Table Ronde in Quebec is amazing, as is BC wild sockeye salmon, and I want to celebrate it by sharing it. We live in a multicultural city with global influences in our cuisine, which is something to be proud of. I value that as much as I do our spot prawns and I can appreciate the efforts of producers who excel at their craft — even when it is not close to home.

Kin’s Challenge winner shares her fun-earned wisdom by Jenn Chic

F

or 13 weeks, Kristen MacGregor represented the Kin’s Market in the West End in the Kin’s Challenge. She was committed to improving her overall health with the help of free fruits and veggies, free health tests and nutrition consultations, a personal trainer, and a Vancouver rec centre membership. She also participated in weekly challenges to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and wrote about her Kin’s Challenge journey on her blog (TowardsATwoPiece.com). All the hard work paid off. As the winner of Kin’s Challenge, she will enjoy a cruise to Los Angeles — even more motivation to keep up her new healthier lifestyle. What did you find challenging about the competition? I never liked gyms so I had to figure out how to burn calories in ways that I would like. I also had to change my ideas about food. I used to believe that eating fresh produce was more expensive and it would just end up going bad. I learned to shop for groceries, and cook new recipes using fresh fruits and vegetables.

You said you wanted to try activities “out of your comfort zone”. What did you do? The Sun Run. I’ve never thought of myself as a runner, but now I know there’s nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when you cross the finish line. I never liked going to yoga classes because it was so intimidating. I felt like everyone else was so much thinner and more flexible. Because of the competition, I would go to yoga class even when I didn’t feel comfortable. Eventually I got over myself and now I want to keep going. What lessons were especially valuable? I’m not the only one who was really hard on myself. Through reading the other competitors’ blogs I realized that everyone makes mistakes. I now take responsibility for what I eat and have learned that I have to exercise if I want to maintain my weight. It’s really that simple. I learned that exercise can be fun. I learned not to focus on the scale and to be patient — things don’t happen overnight. What kept you motivated? Because I asked, I had friends to exercise with many days a week.

Kristen MacGregor at the Kin’s Market on Davie. Lou Lou Childs photo They were so patient and I felt so lucky. They became my “team”. You have to celebrate the little achievements. I may sound like a total geek, but I had poster boards up in my house with charts where I would give myself gold stars for all the activities. I set goals. One was to walk 10,000 steps every day. I used a pedometer and if, by the evening, I was coming up short, I would grab my boyfriend and go for a walk around the seawall. I would make dates with friends

and family to exercise together and that really helped to keep me accountable. What are some new healthy habits you’re enjoying?A girlfriend, knowing I was in the competition, invited me to hike around Lynn Canyon, something she did many times a week. After the first time, I felt slow and winded. I didn’t think I’d go again but she called me every time she went and made it really easy for me to join her. Now, we go hiking

together 2-3 times a week and hike at least 15 kilometres each time. What’s your advice to anyone hoping to embark on their own challenge and lose some weight? Try your best and be positive. Don’t beat yourself up when you make mistakes. You have to take responsibility for what you eat and how much you exercise. It’s a slow process so you need to be patient, but every little thing makes a difference.

A temptation impossible to resist Coney Island Frozen Custard: You won’t stop at one spoonful Close your eyes and think of your favourite ice cream. Then think of an even richer, creamier, denser version of ice cream. Savour the moment until you just can’t take the temptation any more. Now you’re primed for a trip to the American Cheesesteak Co. on Davie Street. The popular cheesesteak sandwich restaurant is adding its own house-made Coney Island Frozen Custard to the menu. First invented by Coney Island ice cream vendors who discovered that adding egg yolks to their ice cream gave it a smoother, richer texture, they sold 18,460 cones along the boardwalk that first weekend alone! Frozen custard contains much less air than regular ice cream. This is what gives it the dense and creamy consistency. The addition of pasteurized egg yolks, which most ice creams don’t contain, adds a silky texture that makes it impossible to stop at “just one spoonful.” But it’s what chef Nyle Petherbridge does next that makes the custard so irresistible. He uses his imagination and adds things, wonderful things, like Black Forest

(Right now he’s testing what Pink Spatula’s made-in-Mission marshmallows taste like frozen in custard.) Chocolate and vanilla Coney Island Frozen Custard will be available at all times, but there will also be four other rotating flavours. You can do your own experimenting too. The restaurant offers a bunch of ingredients you can choose from to make your own “concrete” frozen custard: house made sauces such as chocolate fudge, salty caramel and peanut butter, nuts and homemade brownies and cookie crumble. “You get to be the master of your own experience,” says Petherbridge, who’s been making 14 to 15 batches of frozen custard a day as he comes up with even more combinations to try. or the last little while, there have been rumblings that Bertus Albertyn, who had been making wine at Oliver’s Burrowing Owl Estate Winery since 2009, was about to pack up his things and devote all of his time to a new project in the South Okanagan. There wasn’t a lot known about what his new venture would entail, but there certainly was a lot of optimism. You see, Burrowing Owl has had a quite stellar reputation since it first released wines back in 1997. As the winemaker’s torch was passed from Bill Dyer to Stephen Wyse and then to Bertus Albertyn, there was a good deal of consistency to the winery’s muscular style, full of polished fruit and confidence. My preferred ever-so-slight variance of style has definitely leaned toward the latter years where I’ve found their wines to have the most balance, with a little more freshness and honesty to the fruit. I assumed that as the winery stayed true to its house style of bold and handsome wines, it was perhaps a little more of a hands-off approach that Bertus, a South African expat, employed that resulted in the wines showing a little more true. So it’s a little bittersweet for me that he’s fled the coop at such a storied winery, but I’m delighted to share that his impressive skill is perhaps even better employed at his new, personal venture: Maverick Estate Winery. Now that he (and a couple partners) pay the bills, he can have a genuine influence on the wines he’s crafting without adhering to some-

one else’s vision. The result, from the first couple wines I’ve tried, are fresh and pure expressions of the winery’s vineyard in the South Okanagan’s Golden Mile. With minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery, and perhaps the odd smidge of oak to properly frame the fruit, each sip lends elements of the land; whether it’s crisp minerality, a whisper of sage or a beaming ray of sunshine. They’re just getting started and there’s not much to go around, but jump on it if you can by nabbing some bottles via MaverickWine. ca. Here are the two labels currently offered:

Maverick Estate Winery 2011 Pinot Gris | $20 A nice, ripe apricot-laden Pinot Gris with a splash of fruit cocktail, a few dusty herbs and some bursts of lovely, aromatic jasmine popping through. It’ll handle spicy dishes, poultry and game quite nicely.

Maverick Estate Winery 2011 Origin | $16 I was a little hesitant of this blend that encompasses 70 per cent Gewürztraminer and 30 per cent Sauvignon Blanc but after a few quick sips, I started wondering why more wineries don’t try it. Sure, the Gewürztraminer steals the show with lychee, rose petal and all of the other textbook elements; but just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, the Sauvignon Blanc rushes in with fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit to liven things up and keep it from being too cloying. Cool stuff.

Tapped In A few weeks ago, our City Cellar columnist Kurtis Kolt wrote about the phenomenal success of Under Cover, a blind wine tasting event organized by the Shooting Stars Foundation. Now Shooting Stars is teaming up with Vancouver Craft Beer Week to give craft beer lovers the chance to test their palate at a blind taste testing at Performance Works on Granville Island. Tapped In lets you go “beyond the label”. For $35 (or $300 for groups of 10 friends) you get to sample the beers plus enjoy appetitizes from Pings Wings Wandering Wok. Two pieces of ID are required and you must, of course, be older than 19. To buy tickets please go to ShootingStarsFoundation.org.

Neighbourhood B.O. Visited Granville Island and Yaletown via transit and False Creek Ferries on Sunday and am stunned that these not very long ago delightful neighbourhoods have become the armpits of urban development. What happened?

Shameful profiteering Shame on whoever in City Hall is responsible for deciding to remove all 14 park benches along English Bay from the Inukshuk to the Bath House right at the height of tourist season and a week before the Celebration of Light. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fireworks bleachers being constructed at the same location where seats are being sold at an average price of $50 for 25 minutes of oohing and aahing? Disgusted

How come some tourists who come to my world class home city act like such assholes? I came across some Americans who kept up with their verbal diarrhea about how stupid we Canadians really are and ‘we would do this and that in Los Angeles or New York’, blah, blah, blah. Then they even let a few racial and homophobic comments spill out. While I’ve met many Americans and tourists/ visitors from nearly every country on the planet, most were very courteous and fun loving people who had many good things to say about their experiences in my home city. If people who come from the land that has a dark history of slavery and lynchings, and where civil rights violations continue to this day among many other notorious acts of brutality, really think Canadians are stupid and backward and don’t like the kind of diverse people they encounter when trespassing onto the soil of my country, then please pick up your racist bigoted fat asses off the sidewalk and get the hell out of my country. Search begins for new MV garbage incinerator site By Jeff Nagel

P

roperty owners who want to host Metro Vancouver’s next garbage incinerator will be asked to step forward over the next three months. A formal call for public and private land owners to propose waste-to-energy sites will be issued next week by the regional district and closes Oct. 15. Besides businesses and private land owners, local cities and arms of the provincial or federal governments are all eligible to advance possible sites for Metro Vancouver’s consideration. It’s the latest stage in a complex procurement process for a new plant that’s to be built by 2018 and consume 370,000 tonnes of garbage per year.

Metro has already solicited proposals on technology from companies interested in operating the new plant and has short listed 10 of them, based on their track record and other factors. Most intend to build a mass-burn incinerator, although a couple of firms would use anerobic digestion or gasification. It’s expected many of the proponents will have separately optioned sites they consider suitable. But Metro also wants a clutch of up to five more possible properties, one of which could be matched with an eventual winning proposal, in case it doesn’t come with a secured site or its site is less suitable. Metro is also looking beyond this region to sites in neighbouring regional districts, including those on Vancouver Island.

TURN YOUR EMPTIES INTO A NEW SET OF WHEELS. From now until September 2nd, return your empty beverage containers for a chance to win one of three eco-friendly rides! Look for the official ballot box at participating Return-It Depots.

No purchase necessary. Open only to BC residents age 19 or over. Limit one entry per person and per household per day. Contest closes September 2nd, 2013. For full contest details, visit return-it.ca/winit.

Movie Reviews The Conjuring summons Old School thrills THE CONJURING

Lorraine Warren, played effectively by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The most refreshing part of The Conjuring is how many genuine ‘jump out of your seat’ moments of fright exist (and there are a lot) consistently throughout the film; Wan never resorts to graphic violence or frantic, shaky camerawork. Instead, he Thor Diakow relies on classic elements, a creaking door or a crayon rolling across the floor, to ramp up the thrills. If anything, the movie feels a bit too familiar at times, recalling the best moments of The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist and even George C. Scott’s The Changeling. However, it’s easy to sit back and enjoy even if you’ve taken the ride before; Wan has expertly crafted a gripping yarn with solid acting, taut storytelling and a genuinely frightening sense of creeping dread.

Starring Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga Directed by James Wan Horror movies come in many forms and James Wan knows how to deliver them better than most directors today. The 36-year-old filmmaker rose to fame with the hugely successful Saw in 2004 (which spawned six sequels and ushered in the era of ‘torture porn’ movies) but dialed back on the gore for his other massive hit, Insidious in 2010. Drawing upon the latter film, Wan pays tribute to the tension-building, psychologically harrowing flicks of the 70s in The Conjuring. Apparently based on true events, the story takes place on Rhode Island as a family, experiencing strange events in their new home, calls upon the professional help of paranormal investigators Ed and

brothers, played by Silva’s actual siblings. The ease with which they share the screen throws Jamie’s needy posturing into sharp relief. He wants so desperately to emulate the free-wheeling exploits of Thompson and Kerouac that he tries to mould the experience at every turn. Fortunately, it wriggles free from his grip and takes on an amorphous quality. In place of a traditional plotline, we’re offered a Rorschach blot that welcomes different interpretations. Silva employs such a deft directorial hand that you barely realize that he’s carefully orchestrating the seemingly random proceedings, ensuring that everyone’s precisely where they need be — physically and emotionally — for the subtly trippy, unexpectedly tense climax. Having already learned what Jamie is only beginning to wrap his head around, Silva loosens the reins and lets us enjoy the trip while also ensuring that we emerge from it enlightened. — Curtis Woloschuk

Starring Michael Cera, Gaby Hoffmann Directed by Sebastián Silva While Michael Cera’s cameo as a debauched caricature of himself in This Is the End suggested that he was eager to reinvent himself, his prickly performance in Sebastián Silva’s latest feature evidences that he’s fully capable of pulling off such a feat. Taking his patented insecurity in a darker direction, Cera plays Jamie, a particularly ugly American who’s ventured to Chile for the sole purpose of sampling mescaline extracted from a San Pedro cactus. Granted, he also finds it in his heart to hoover strangers’ cocaine and incessantly reference The Doors of Perception. Remarkably, he grows even more insufferable when a free-spirited American girl named Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann, aptly described as a “lonely tornado”) crashes his pilgrimage. Also along on the road trip are three Chilean

haunted more than a few dreams courtesy of his predatory turn in Hannibal, he nimbly transitions to playing the prey in Thomas Vinterberg’s equally terrifying The Hunt. Lucas (Mikkelsen) is in the process of righting his ship only to have it capsize completely. Upset over being disciplined, one of his kindergarten students, Klara (Annika Wedderkopp), impulsively tells another teacher that Lucas is a pervert. Despite there being no proof to back this assertion, Lucas’ Danish hunting village brands him a pariah. Even when a remorseful Klara recants her accusation, the townsfolk refuse to relent. There’s little grace to the dance that Lucas and his neighbours subsequently engage in. He attempts to go about his daily routines, believing that feigning normalcy will eventually see it restored. This only provokes his tormentors, pushing them on to greater sadism. Vinterberg is holding up a mirror to society. And while we’d like to believe that there are cracks and warps that are distorting the reflection, the reality is this is exactly how we look. — C.W.

Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp Directed by Thomas Vinterberg Watching Mads Mikkelsen’s remarkable dexterity as an actor, it comes as little surprise to learn that he first enjoyed a decade-long dance career. Having

initiate your breakthrough communications. For best results, be full of grace and balance.

Free Will Astrology #Z 3PC #SF[TOZ r Week of July 25 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): “I have tried in my way to be free,” sings Leonard Cohen in his song “Bird on a Wire.” In other words, he has done the best he can to liberate himself from his unconscious patterns, bad habits, and self-delusions. He hasn’t been perfect in his efforts, but the work he has done has earned him a measure of deliverance from his suffering. I recommend you follow his lead, Aries. Do your best to bring more relief and release into your life. Get rid of things that hold you back. Overthrow a pinched expectation and ignore a so-called limitation or two. By this time next week, I hope you will be able to say sincerely, “I have tried in my way to be free.” TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): “There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm,” wrote the novelist Willa Cather. According to my reading of the astrological omens, Taurus, you’re in a phase of your cycle when storm-learning isn’t your priority. The educational experiences you need most will unfold when you’re exploring the mysteries of peace and serenity. In fact, I suspect that the deeper you relax, the more likely it is that you will attract life-changing teachings — lessons that can transform your life for the better and fuel you for a long time. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Is there a message you’ve wanted to deliver for a long time but haven’t been able to? Are you bursting with thoughts or feelings that you’ve been longing to express but can’t find the right way to do so? Have you spent months carrying around a poignant truth that you have felt wasn’t ripe enough to be revealed? If your answer to any of those questions is yes, I believe the time will soon be at hand to make a move. But it’s important that you’re not impulsive or melodramatic as you

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Bees and other insects can see ultraviolet light, which is invisible to humans. When they look at flowers, they detect designs on the petals that you and I cannot. For example, the evening primrose appears completely yellow to us, but it calls seductively to bees with a flashy star pattern at its center. Many of the secret signs that flowers offer the pollinators are meant to guide them to where the pollen and nectar are. Let’s use this as our metaphor of the week, Cancerian. I am not predicting that you will be able to perceive a broader spectrum of light. But I do believe you will discern cues and clues that are hidden from most people and that have been imperceptible to you in the past. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): “I was six years old when my parents told me that there was a small, dark jewel inside my skull, learning to be me.” So said the Leo science fiction writer Greg Egan in his story “Learning to Be Me.” Let’s pretend that you, too, have a small dark jewel inside your skull that’s learning to be you. It’s a good metaphor for what I believe has been happening all these years: You have been gradually mastering the art of being the best Leo you can be. It hasn’t been easy. You weren’t born knowing how to be your beautiful, radiant, courageous self, but have had to work hard to activate your potentials. Now you’re moving into an especially critical phase of the process: a time when you have the chance to learn how to love yourself with greater ingenuity. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): “Dear Astrology Guy: Please tell me why I have to work so hard — meditate, reflect, read, analyze, poke, prod, investigate — to discover truths about myself that must be obvious to others. Why is it so hard for me to see where I need healing and where I need to let go? Why is it such an ordeal to grasp what is interfering with my wholeness when I can quickly pinpoint what other people’s issues are? - Overworked Virgo.” Dear

Overworked: I’m happy to report that you Virgos will soon be offered a gush of revelations about who you are, how you can heal, and what strategies will best serve your quest to minimize your anxiety. Are you prepared to absorb some intense teachings? For best results, make yourself extra receptive. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): One of the world’s best race car teams is McLaren. It wins about 25 per cent of the events in which it competes. Its skilled drivers account for much of its success, but its technicians are also pretty sensational. During a pitstop in the middle of a race, they can change all four tires on the car in less than three seconds. Do you have helpers like that, Libra? If you don’t, it’s time to intensify your efforts to get them. And if you do, it’s time to call on them to give you an extra boost. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Let’s try an experiment. It’s risky, but I’m hoping you will do it with such flair that there will be no karmic blowback. What I propose, Scorpio, is that you have fun expressing more confidence than usual. I invite you to strut a bit, even swagger, as you demonstrate your command over your circumstances. Enjoy acting as if the world is your plaything... as if everyone around you secretly needs you to rise up and be a bigger, bolder version of yourself. The trick, of course, will be to avoid getting puffed up with grandiose delusions. Your challenge is to be more wildly devoted to embodying your soul’s code without lapsing into arrogance. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): I suspect that you are longing to take a quantum leap of faith, but are also afraid to take that quantum leap of faith. You sense the potential of experiencing a very cool expansion, while at the same time you hesitate to leave your comfort zone and give up your familiar pain. In light of the conflict, which may not be entirely conscious, I suggest you hold off on making a gigantic quantum leap of faith. Instead, experiment with a few bunny hops of faith. Build up your courage with some play-

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): Should you be worried that a venomous spider has crawled into your shoe while you were sleeping? Just in case, should you flip your shoe upside-down before putting it on each morning? My studied opinion: hell, no. The chances of you being bitten on the foot by a venomous spider lurking in your shoe are even less than the possibility that you will be abducted by an alien who looks like Elvis Presley and forced to sing a karaoke version of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” at an extraterrestrial bar. And if you are going around filled with delusional anxieties like that, you will definitely interfere with life’s current predilection, which is to give you a cleansing respite from your fears as well as immunity from harm.
