WHY WE STILL NEED PRIDE

With many countries now having marriage equality, I hear a common refrain – why do we still need Pride? Haven’t we gone far enough? Here’s a few statistics from the CDC, numerous universities, governments and health care organizations. Forty per cent of youth living on the streets are LGBTQ.The suicide rate of LGBTQ youth is between four times to eight times higher than for straight youth. Between 30 per cent and 40 per cent of LGBTQ youth have attempted suicide. Gaybashing is still common with 19 per cent to 29 per cent of students have experienced violence. Bullying in schools is a daily occurrence for many LGBTQ youth. Acceptance is still an issue in many cultures within Canada. Finally, many other countries have no protections at all. In the US, for example, in many States you can still be fired for being LGBTQ. You can get married and then you can get a “pink slip”. Pride is recognition of how far we have come, how far we have yet to go and what we stand to lose if we fail to protect what we have fought for. How many times have governments voted against numerous equality initiatives? Celebrate, be proud and keep the fight up. Happy Pride! –Tom McKenna

THANK YOU RIO STAFF

Last week, we were coming

back from a family barbecue and my Aunt Hazel was not feeling so great – she figures it was the figs, but I’d go with jetlag and some buckets of red wine.We stopped in front on the Rio Theatre where she was not feeling well. The staff at the Rio asked if she wanted some ginger ale and then let her/us use the restroom. I just wanted to say thanks very much to Lee and Paul for being so coutreous and thoughtful. Do not fret, Hazel is back on the red wine as the jetlag has subsided :) –Keith Freeman

MAYOR NEEDS TO LOOK AT PRIORITIES

When Mayor Moonbeam was chatting with the Pope about climate change and peace in our time, I wonder if they also discussed what the Mayor is going to do about the garbage littering our streets and alleys, or the sidewalks and roads that are falling apart or anything else the Mayor is actually responsible for. –Just Curious

HOT AIR, OR STUPIDITY?

The people who light “Asian Fire Balloons” on English Bay Beach and then watch them ride the wind and drift into the city and/or Stanley Park are very, very, very stupid people. Don’t they know that the westerly wind is dominant. I saw one Asian Fire Balloon miss a balcony on a 16th floor by

five feet. Just think how easily that fire would have spread if it hit the building and spread its flame... and the damage to life and property it would have caused.Think about how easily one of these would ignite Stanley Park into a raging fire. This just shows how really stupid “stupid people” can be. –From the Balcony

SMOKERS NEED TO WATCH THEIR BUTTS

Re:“Cranky Smoker Fumes”, Rant/Rave, July 23, 2015 To Steven Ledoux, it is true most of the forest fires have been started by lightning but some were also started by flicked cigarette butts, as told by local fire chiefs. With so many fires started by lightning we don’t need to stretch already limited resources with extra fires caused by human carelessness. Why are you flicking cigarette butts anyway, because they are littering our streets and beaches everywhere. Butts on the beach are washed out at high tide and fish mistaken them for food and can die from one butt. Cigarette butts thrown along the curb are washed down the drains and into local waters and increase the chances of more fish and sea birds swallowing them. Stop flicking your butts and be responsible and carry a container to put them in. –Don Allison

Demolish the viaducts: City staff City council will make decision in September MIKE HOWELL @howellings

After two years of studying whether the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts should remain standing or be flattened, city staff has reached a decision on the future of the elevated roadways: Knock the suckers down. Kevin McNaney, the city’s assistant director of planning, said a report will be presented to city council in September that recommends the 1970sera hulking structures that connect Chinatown to downtown should be demolished and replaced by a new road network. “We’ve really done the detailed work and sunk our teeth into the transportation network, and it shows that it’s actually a better transportation system,” said McNaney, noting the new network would link Georgia Street to Pacific in a sloping grade. With 43,000 vehicles per day using the viaducts, city staff completed what McNaney described as “extensive

The days of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts could be numbered. Dan Toulgoet photo transportation modeling”– studying turns, signal systems and where the traffic originates – to ensure traffic chaos wouldn’t ensue without the elevated roadways. The other factor that swayed staff to demolish the viaducts was the expensive work required to keep the structures seismically sound. McNaney said it would cost up to $65 million “just to keep them standing” in an earthquake. “It doesn’t mean that they would be usable after, which is obviously a huge concern,” he said, noting the viaducts could topple over on top of the SkyTrain and cut off downtown from the new St. Paul’s Hospital proposed for the False Creek Flats. “We need that post-disaster transportation system from downtown to get people to the hospital.” As for fears Strathcona resi-

dents had early on about their neighbourhood being overrun with vehicles, McNaney said planning staff concluded traffic volumes will decrease on Prior Street. He noted staff is also looking at an alternative roadway to Prior which could mean a new connector across the False Creek Flats, potentially on Malkin or National. Those ideas are being discussed as part of the area plan for the False Creek Flats. Taking the viaducts down should trigger the completion of development in Northeast False Creek, including building the much-awaited Creekside park to the north of the Telus World of Science. That project has been delayed for two decades as Concord Pacific looks to develop its final pieces of properties on the former Expo 86 lands. McNaney said negotiations

The Annual General Meeting of the Robson Street Business Association (RSBA) will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 1:00 pm, in the Garibaldi Room of the Blue Horizon Hotel, 1225 Robson Street, Vancouver, BC. Agenda topics will include the RSBA report on the year’s activities, adoption of the auditor’s report, appointment of an auditor, adoption of the 2016/2017 budget, and the election of directors. The Association invites written nominations for the directorships signed by a voting member and seconded by two voting members of the Society. If you are a voting member and wish to nominate someone for the directorship, please deliver written nominations to the office of the RSBA at #412-1155 Robson Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6E 1B5, before August 25, 2015.

Any person eligible for voting that has not registered and wishes to do so should contact the RSBA office at 604-669-8132, or at the RSBA address above. Membership registration notices will be sent out to all eligible applicants and the completed application must be returned at least five business days before the scheduled AGM date. negative effect on traffic flow in the area. He also has questions about the tab for the project, which he believes should be “cost-neutral.” “It could be a design improvement for our city but I also understand how people are feeling about getting around,” Affleck said of knocking down the viaducts. If the viaducts are demolished, Affleck said, city staff should clearly spell out that any new development that may come about as a result of land that opens up in the area should be tied to paying for the cost of any deconstruction of the viaducts. Development cost levies and community amenity contributions should pay – or help pay – for that work, he said. “It has to be cost-neutral and I think there’s money for the city to be made from the development opportunities in that neighbourhood,” Affleck said. Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs, who years ago proposed the city consider demolishing the viaducts, said it’s difficult to say what the final cost-benefit figures of demolishing the viaducts will be because the two blocks the city would gain

on either side of Main Street would have to be rezoned. “Obviously, we want the direct costs to be as low as possible but I don’t think we want to tie the hands of future planning decisions or make any assumptions how dense the surrounding area would be,” Meggs said. “We should go forward and make a decision about whether we want to take this bold step for the future, or not. And we should do that in September. After that, we can work through a whole bunch of these other issues. It would be crazy to try to say today that we know exactly what’s going to unfold there over 20 years.” Meggs said he’s heard from many people who want to see affordable housing built where the viaducts’ on-andoff-ramps are located on Main Street. And if that’s done, he said, then the value of the land “would be less, but the value to the community might be more.” Added Meggs: “I’ve always felt the opportunity was a fantastic one for building the city, and that’s what staff have been telling council for a long time now.” –Courtesy of theVancouver Courier

continue with Concord to determine land transfers and swaps to ensure the new roadway could be built in the area that the viaducts now occupy. City staff’s plan calls for the SkyTrain track to remain. However, whatever gets done, it will be expensive. A staff report to city council in June 2013 said it would cost up to $55 million to demolish the viaducts. The tab for such a project climbs to more than $130 million when costs are calculated to modify existing streets, parks, utilities, build more parks and conduct soil remediation on what were former industrial lands. The same report said demolishing the viaducts would free up 10 acres of land worth up to $110 million. Although staff’s desire is to have the land devoted for public open space, affordable housing and other public uses, the report notes some of the land could be sold for development. NPA Coun. George Affleck said he will wait to see the final report in September before stating whether he agrees with staff’s recommendation to demolish the viaducts. Affleck said he is concerned removing the viaducts would have a

Douse the fireworks

Iris, avid outdoors enthusiast, PARC resident

Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

It’s not just because the fireworks killed my dog. But let’s just say that’s a big part of the reason why I despise the annual event that takes over English Bay at the height of our summer. I’ve long thought this ridiculous, pyro-fuelled gathering of the mostly young, drunk, and obnoxious bridge-and-tunnel crowd should be cancelled for myriad reasons, besides my deceased dog. But this year, more than any year, it’s completely unacceptable that the fireworks are going ahead as scheduled. Why? Forget the drunks and the fights and the noise, forget the blocked off streets and explosions that make you feel like you’re apartment building is under a mortar attack, or if the wind is blowing the wrong way, the massive clouds of gunpowder that drift through the high rises of the West End as the fireworks blast away. Forget all that and consider this: we’re in the middle of a serious drought. Isn’t lighting off a night sky full of colourful, fiery explosives, on three different nights, so utterly close to the matchstickdry jewel of Stanley Park, the very last thing we should be doing? This isn’t to mention the copycats the fireworks always inspire. On fireworks nights, long before and long

Thinkstock photo after the main event actually occurs, losers light off leftover Halloween fireworks all along our oceanfront. Bad news. But here’s the thing: earlier this month, fireworks were banned in Metro Vancouver due to the drought! But the city-imposed bylaw somehow does not apply to what we are now calling the “Celebration of Light”, because they are detonated over water. Ridiculous, and hypocritical. I don’t even buy the competition angle. This year it’s China, Brazil and Canada all lining up to torch each other with pyrotechnics. Does anyone really keep track or care about who “wins” and who doesn’t? A major car company sponsors the event, and I suppose as long as those sponsors fuel the event, it will continue. 400,000 people stream into downtown Vancouver for the

fireworks, which is a massive economic boost. That’s right, the crowds are estimated at 400,000 people each night. The West End is already one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in all of North America, and on fireworks night, you can add the entire current population of the city of Halifax all showing up on English Bay beach at the same time. It’s just too much, this sizzling summer most especially. Oh, and my dog? Every summer, every time the fireworks went off, she went nuts, suffering fear and trauma as they exploded. She’d shake violently, hiding under our bed. One summer during the event, she couldn’t handle it, and had a heart attack and died on the spot, halfway through the “show”. It’s time to douse the fireworks. W

HOME Garcia’s Tie Dyed Bed, from Dog and Crow.

Five Finds goes to the dogs Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK I move. A lot. It’s a constant battle between feeling settled in and satisfying my constant desire to create a new space; the challenge of taking all my furnishings and treasures and reconfiguring the vibe to suit a new pad is one of my most favourite endeavours. My latest move brought me home to a cool East Side loft, which presented the task of making a family space out of 1,000 square feet of open concept living. While that was definitely an undertaking, the biggest décor challenge came in an unexpected form: my dog, Pretty. After months of searching for a four-legged addition to the home, the Victoria-based rescue group RainCoast Dog Rescue facilitated a meeting between an underweight California shelter dog and my family.True to her name, Pretty captured our hearts and joined us in our new abode. The transition was easy – however, the challenge I discovered was how to create a welcoming space for the pooch without sacrificing my freshly-updated interior design. As I began the hunt for a stylish dog bed, food bowls and all the accessories a modern urban dog seems to require, the designer in me was horrified: the majority of pet products in the mainstream market were not my taste and, worse yet, generic. Especially in an open concept

loft space, there is nowhere to hide unsightly doggy items. While I wondered how could I possibly handle having an oversized fleece donut bed in my living room (maybe Pretty would like my hot pink CB2 floor pouff instead?), I began to think outside the traditional realm of pet stores and seek out designer-and-dog approved digs for Fido. Once I started digging deeper, I was super stoked at my success: there are a number of local (or at least locallysold) stellar finds that allow doggy comfort with high style. From beds to bowls to leashes, I found a Five Finds-worthy collection of goods for Pretty that would not only suit, but add to, my new décor. Garcia’s Tie Dyed Bed, $150$190. Available from Dog and Crow, DogAndCrow.ca This was my most favourite find: the Dog & Crow line was founded by fellow designer Kate Horseman and has developed into a collection that “integrates flawlessly with a contemporary décor aesthetic”.This super chic, bohemian-inspired dog bed allows for maximum canine comfort with hotel-quality cushioning, yet is a perfect style fit for a free-spirited feminine décor. Hand-dyed indigo with a neon pink trim and the line’s signature leather patch, this bed is handmade locally in Vancouver, with partial proceeds going to the SPCA.This is definitely a brand after my own heart. FOUND MY ANIMAL rope leash and collar, prices vary. Avail-

able at Barking Babies, 1188 Homer Another brand with core values surrounding beautiful design and animal welfare, FOUND MY ANIMAL began their line of nautical rope leashes and collars for their own rescue dogs in 2006. So many people stopped them in the street to admire the leads that the duo decided to create a complete collection and thus, FOUND was born. The three strand, hand-spliced and whipped rope leash designs are visually unique in style, but are ultimately functional: the rope offers grip comfort for you, with an easily adjustable lead length for Fido. With a variety of colour ways and an ombré effect pattern, these were definitely created for the style conscious – having these hanging by your door in between walks is sure to make a décor statement. Fort Standard Standing Bowl, $139. Available at Provide Home, 529 Beatty Style suited for even the most discerning kitchen, this bowl is the designer alternative to a standard dog dish. The Brooklyn-based design is fabricated from sand cast aluminum and is raised from the floor (or tabletop) on architecturally-inspired planar legs. Designed to serve to a human audience, the minimalist dish is perfectly sized to carry over into the canine culinary realm; available in a salmon toned food safe powder coated finish.

Fantasy fuels out and proud Vancouver designer Niki Hope Style File

@NikiMHope With its sleek, feminine silhouettes, it’s no accident that the work of Vancouver fashion designer Jason Matlo harkens back to the sultry 1970s, conjuring up the feeling of Halston in his prime. Matlo, who also teaches aspiring designers, doesn’t hold back his opinion on today’s style, which he says is filled with too many surgically-enhanced versions of the female body. “I’m seeing women pushing their boobs and everything higher and higher up.They’re practically wearing them like a set of earrings,” he laments. During his highly anticipated runway show at Eco FashionWeek this past spring, Matlo and his team removed the bra, letting “women’s breasts fall back down to where they naturally want to be.” As a gay male designer, Matlo says he creates clothes from a projection or a fantasy of how he would like women to look. It’s a common theme he sees from many of his gay students in the classroom. The women Matlo teaches and works with tend to take a

Designer Jason Matlo in his studio. Dan Toulgoet photo more “pragmatic,” wearable approach to design, says the veteran designer known for his trademark platinum hair and glamorous dresses he creates for west-side socialites. “Women design for themselves and other women, and it looks completely different. And not one is better than the other, but they’re very, very different,” he says. “Men design from a controlled fantasy, and I’m certainly guilty of this as well.” A child of the decade, Matlo’s inspiration comes

from the sexy ‘70s – think Charlie’s Angels, flowing hair and hemlines, Studio 54. “There is a certain story around when gay men design. They are typically more flamboyant,” Matlo says. “I work around all women. I am the only gay man on my design team. My influences are very different than the girls that work with me.” Citing those influences, Matlo references shoe designer Brian Atwood, whom he met when they were both stocked atThe Room at Hudson’s Bay.

In a recent Instagram post, Atwood uploaded a shot of Olivia Newton-John in Grease. Matlo’s assistant tagged him in the pic because the image of Newton-John’s character’s transformation from pony-tailed good girl into saucy hot pants and red heels was a seminal one for the Vancouver designer. Matlo is known for his collections of stunningly crafted bridal gowns, which run between $3,000 and $8,000, along with his sophisticated

ready-to-wear collection, that goes from $450 to $1,500, and ready-made dresses, priced between $300 and $400. A year ago Matlo and his team, based in his Gastown studio, pulled back his stocklists – removing his line from stores and began selling direct instead. The move resulted in the designer having his best year financially. Meanwhile, for the first time in four years, Matlo and his boyfriend will be in town for Pride this weekend. The designer, who scooped up the coveted Smirnoff International Fashion Awards after graduating in the 1990s, beating out more than 500 Canadian designers, and also won a design reality TV show called Making it Big, says these are interesting times to be gay, noting the emergence of Caitlyn Jenner. “It’s a fascinating, fascinating time for the gay community right now; it certainly has propelled forward more in the last year than I thought I was going to see in my lifetime, because I was a gay teen in the 1980s – in Kelowna, to boot,” Matlo laughs. “I never thought I would see the day when it was this open and this accepted.” W

support, one thing is certain: this is the new restaurant mecca of Vancouver. Gastown, Railtown, Chinatown and Strathcona have seen massive development in recent years, and all of those new condo and office dwellers naturally need places to fill their stomachs and satiate their thirst. And, while Gastown has become slightly redolent of Jersey Shore on Saturday nights, its neighbours to the east are, thankfully, still slightly more understated and nonchalant.Take the latest commissary to open in Strathcona. Ed’s Daily (named after owners Dax Droski and Brett Turner’s respective grandfathers) is a massive, 3,500-square-foot

space that offers eat-in or take-away breakfasts and lunches every weekday. Despite the size, there are only 20-odd seats, as most of the space is claimed by the open commissary kitchen, which offers catering, as well as renting itself out to food trucks and other small businesses. It’s a bright, soothing space, thanks to the new wall-to-wall windows on two sides, and the light wood banquettes. Everything is served on raised-edge metal trays lined with brown paper or in stainless steel mixing bowls. The menu isn’t huge, but it’s smart and delicious. Droski and Turner are professional caterers (Cocktails & Canapes), and they’ve obviously tested and refined

their menus to a high level of polish. Breads (and coffee) come from Matchstick Coffee Roasters, and baked goods are mainly supplied by Float On, a gluten-free bakery on Fraser Street. Everything else is made inhouse and it’s excellent. Avocado toast ($5.25) sounds boring, but thickly spread over Matchstick’s rye (toasted) and dressed with chili oil, Maldon sea salt, pepper and paper-thin slices of watermelon radish, it’s revelatory. The tomato and manchego sandwich ($9) was beautifully balanced, spread with hemp heart pesto and truffle aioli, and stuffed with pickled red onion, roasted fennel, and grilled eggplant. Pair it

with a salad for $12, like the excellent kale and soba, with grilled zucchini, cabbage, carrots, toasted sesame seeds and a peanut vinaigrette that offered up a light lick of heat. The side portion was enormous, enough to feed two of us. For breakfast, try the pancetta and egg biscuit ($5.75). The buttermilk-chive biscuit is baked in-house and it has a wonderful texture (add a buck for the gluten-free bun, which is more of a baguette). The El Jefe ($7.75) is a two-fisted breakfast burrito for sharper appetites, with Two Rivers chorizo, avocado-chipotle cream, Gruyere and provolone cheese, and a Spanish-style scrambled egg mixture that is piquant and bright.

My only complaint is that this kitchen isn’t open on weekends or past 4pm on weekdays, but it certainly keeps the service clientele to a reasonable level, meaning you won’t often have to wait for a seat. Besides, this group is great at packing things to go, so picnic planning is a more than viable option. WINE

The best of BC Pinot Noirs can easily be overwhelmed by too much oak. It’s heartening to see some of our domestic producers demonstrating an understanding of Pinot Noir’s capricious nature. Pinot Noir has even been proposed as BC’s flagship grape. Certainly it’s the only red grown in all our wine regions. Besides substantial plantings in the Okanagan Valley, Pinot Noir has had success in the neighbouring Similkameen Valley and is particularly promising in the emerging regions of the Kootenays and Lillooet. It’s also making a name for itself in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island and can be found on Salt Spring Island and in the Fraser Valley. BC Day provides a great excuse to delve deeper into our local Pinots. And if you desire a full immersion, don’t miss the third annual BC Pinot Noir Celebration in Kaleden on Saturday, Aug. 22. This festival brings together a collection of our best Pinot Noir producers and is an excit-

If you’re a BC wine fan, chances are you’ve had a Pinot Noir or two. It’s one of our most planted reds, second only to Merlot. This early-ripening grape has an affinity for our cool climate. Cool you say? If you’ve been to the Okanagan in the height of summer, you’d be hard-pressed to qualify the weather as cool. However, in the grand scheme of things, the heat only lasts for a short amount of time sometimes presenting a challenge for later ripening grapes. Despite its apparent compatibility with our climes, Pinot Noir is a finicky grape. Too hot and it loses its beautiful fresh fragrance, while too cold, it remains mean and vegetal. As such, site is really important in getting this grape just right. Careful treatment in the cellar is equally crucial. Pinot Noir requires a gentle touch and

ing opportunity to hear renowned British wine expert Steven Spurrier weigh in on our homegrown gems.

CRAFT BEER

Lululemon, Stanley Park and other bizarre beer collaborations Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @StephenSmys

Leo Uribe photo

In case you somehow missed the news, here it is again: Lululemon Athletica is launching its own branded beer in collaboration with Stanley Park Brewing. Lulu’s limited edition Curiosity Lager – which will be available in liquor stores soon, if not by the time you’re reading

this – makes perfect sense and yet, somehow, makes absolutely no sense at all. It makes total sense because there aren’t many lifestyle brands that could ram craft beer down the throats of folks currently unacquainted with it. Certainly, there’s no better brand to promote Vancouver craft beer, even if the brewery receiving all the international coverage is Stanley Park. Yet, this makes absolutely no sense because, fitness and beer are antithetical. Especially when paired

together. Trying seal pose with a belly full of ale? I wouldn’t recommend it. People who enjoy “doing fitness” or whatever also enjoy drinking beer, but this is a weird choice for a brand that has created a lineup of products that fit a very specific ideal of fitness-asfashion. The idea of stuffing that $175 gym bag full of Curiosity Lager is curious indeed. Of course, this is hardly the first bizarre beer partnership in history. As craft beer gains momentum, businesses of all sorts are finding ways to attach their brands to the trend. Here are a few of the weirdest that I’ve stumbled on.

ROGUE AND VOODOO DOUGHNUTS

Rogue Ales has teamed up with the Portland’s beloved doughnut maker for several collaborations that, on paper, seem truly revolting. These beers include a Bacon Maple Ale; a Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale; and a Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Banana Ale. The weird thing is, while these ingredients seem wretched in beer form, they sound stupendous in doughnut form. Weird stuff. I’ll take three (doughnuts).

ROGUE AND SRIRACHA HOT SAUCE

Those wacky cranks at Rogue certainly know how to make a man grimace. Here’s another collaboration with another food manufacturer only a crazy person would ever consider adding to beer – this time with California’s beloved hot sauce maker Sriracha, which tastes good atop a stir fry and literally nothing else. And yet, Rogue used said hot sauce in its Hot Stout Beer, made with real hot chili sauce. I haven’t tried it, and probably never will. OK, maybe I will.

CIGAR CITY BREWING AND GWAR

There have been several American craft-and-heavymetal collaborations in recent years, but the best (on paper) is Florida-based Cigar City’s line of GWAR Beers, made in collaboration with shock metal weirdoes GWAR, who if you’re unaware, dress in grotesque alien costumes and sing

about poop and violence. Together, they’ve made three beers: GWAR B-Q 2013, Killsner and Impales Ale, all of which are perfect titles I wish I had made up.

VANS AND COORS LIGHT

This isn’t so much a beer collaboration as a shoe collaboration from 1990. It’s noteworthy for how ugly these shoes are. I urge you to Google the “Vans Coors Light Shoes” to see what I’m talking about. Basically, these were basic Vans “Off the Wall” brand shoes, with the Coors Light logo etched on the shoe’s every inch. It was a hopelessly unhip attempt by a corporation to appeal to the hip skater culture emerging at that time. Even more embarrassing were the ads, one of which that featured a picture of the shoes on a rack in a refrigerator and these words written across the top: “Cool Shoes.” Of course, with hipster irony in full bloom, these shoes are actually pretty cool now if you can find them, what with Coors Light being so lame and all.

ELYSIAN AND SUB POP

This isn’t actually that weird. It’s actually really cool, especially if, like me, you grew up loving Nirvana and Screaming Trees and other early-‘90s grunge bands signed to the seminal Seattle-based indie label, Sub Pop. Back in 2008, they teamed up with Elysian for the label’s 20th anniversary for Loser, American Pale Ale. The beer label and sixpack artwork featured the Cobain-referencing tag line “Corporate beer still sucks” – a line with added weight now that Elysian is owned by Anheuser-Busch and is now technically “corporate beer.”

HANSON AND…HANSON

This isn’t really a collaboration, but it’s still weird. And a little sad. The Brothers Hanson have created their own beer company, the Tulsa-based, and aptly named, Hanson Brothers Beer Company. Their flagship beer is Mmmhops Pale Ale, and billed “From the guys that invented ‘Mmmbop’” as though this is somehow a selling feature. W

MUSIC

Metz does it their way with ‘II’ LOUISE BURNS @_louiseburns_

Following up an astronomically successful debut album can be tough. This is why the cliché “sophomore slump” exists: to summarize the phenomena of those artists who are not able to repeat that initial spark that is so often found in a really great debut album. ForToronto’s Metz, I may as well be speaking in tongues. “We were just doing what we do, and trying really hard not to overthink the whole ‘second record’ thing,” says vocalist and lead guitarist Alex Edkins. We reach him just hours before he embarks on a North American tour to promote II, the band’s sophomore effort. “I think the worst thing we could have done was try to make a jump to some kind of commercial success, which might have been what a lot of people thought we were gonna do, but we just make the music we like, which happens to be dark, noisy heavy stuff right now.” Let us go back in time to 2008. Metz was born when Edkins and drummer Hayden Menzies moved from Ottawa to Toronto, where they met bassist Chris Slorach. Over the next few years, they released a couple of singles, and quickly built up a reputation for their thundering live shows. Most of the time, you’d hear about them from a friend, opposed to a barrage of social media invitations. Their live shows were brutal, heavy and loud, and leaving without your hearing was the norm. Over time, their electric grunge reputation led to bigger venues, more fans (without the help of social media), and, in 2012, signing to the legendary Sub Pop Records, the golden label of alternative rock. Edkins notes their organic success as a result of life outside the blogosphere. “What we take a lot of pride in, was that it was a

David Waldman photo total word-of-mouth kind of thing, where people [would come] to the shows and tell a friend, and then they’d tell a friend. That’s where we’ve always come from, as far as music fans. Going to the little shows, with that kind of community or music scene, is [to me] the most real kind of way you can build something lasting.” Shortly after signing to Sub Pop, they released their self-titled debut. It was met with high praise from concertgoers, critics and the blogosphere alike, being crowned with the much sought-after “Best New Music” label from Pitchfork, and making fans out of childhood heroes, like

‘90s grunge kings Mudhoney, who later brought them to South America on tour. “The reception of the record was definitely more than anyone, including the label, could have thought,” says Edkins, still noticeably perplexed. “To be doing music as weird as our music is, and doing it full time is kind of a dream we didn’t even dare to have.” After two years of steady touring that included Europe, Australia and North and South America, it’s hard to imagine how anyone would want to go home and immediately write another record.Yet this is exactly what Metz did, barely taking six months off between touring,

and completing II without that existential pressure to repeat their initial success. Not even from their label, which is virtually unheard of in Musicland. “From Day 1, they’ve been like, you guys do what you guys do, and we’ll do what we do, and what we do is put out records,” says Edkins. “I think they’ve gone through it all. They’ve had massive success, and total failure. The best thing that they’ve learned, it seems, is to stay completely out of it. And we love that.” II, produced by “Shaman of Rock” Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck), is a brash, sludge-filled punk explosion

Cobb (Shooter Jennings), Colin Linden (T Bone Burnett), and three songs recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) and John Paul White (Civil Wars). Ortega’s voice is exquisite, prime for the particular blend of country, soul and

rock that she’s become known for. On “Ashes” and “Faded Gloryville”, she is poised and eloquent, giving us her best Emmylou Harris with her pining timbre and hummingbird vibrato. “I Ain’t The Girl” is filled with upbeat Dolly Parton optimism, and her cover of The Bee Gee’s “To Love Somebody” takes a more relaxed, soulful approach. In a genre filled with carefully groomed beards and designer straw hats, Ortega is a fresh breeze of authenticity. Perhaps that’s what is so charming about Gloryville. She isn’t singing to herself, but those behind

that reflects their live performances even better than their debut. There’s the distorted bass driven “Acetate”, that frantically pummels a cathartic hole into your skull. Then there is “I.O.U.”, which sounds like a distant cousin of Nirvana’s Bleach. There are zero radio friendly unit shifters. At press time, the band is already on the road on a tour that includes dates all over North America, Europe, and hopefully Asia in the new year. Despite II coming out in May, Metz already have a seven-inch in the bag and ready for release. Edkins swears they are taking a more “civil” approach to tour-

CHELSEA WOLFE

Abyss (Sargent House) LA-based Chelsea Wolfe has oft been described as a “neo-folk” singer-songwriter with a penchant for all things brooding, dark and ethereal. On Abyss, she shifts even more in the direction of gothic-doom-industrial-whathave-you, bringing us a whirlpool of madness and light. Described in a press release as a musical score

to “the hazy afterlife”, this album is a real downer, and I mean that in the best way possible. Produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Swans), Abyss begins with the industrial “Carrion Flowers”, a raga-type piece that ebbs and flows over programmed drums and

ing this time around. But not too civil. Despite their violent, intense and physically demanding shows, Metz is the proverbial shark. To slow down is to stop, and that won’t be happening any time soon. “After the shows we’re pretty beat up, [but] it is without a doubt the best part of every day.You drive all day, and it’s all so you can have that one hour of letting everything go, and going crazy.” W

METZ play Aug. 3rd at Rickshaw Theatre with guests Dilly Dally and Big Ups.

Wolfe’s signature dreamy vocal. “Crazy Love” is folk-noir, featuring an out of key guitar and cinematic production that mimic the feeling of falling into a dark dream. “Iron Moon” is pure sludge and satin, flirting between the doom-psych undertow and an eerily sweet folk song. While this album may not be for the faint-of-heart, Wolfe has once again proven that she is the ruler of her own realm: the princess of West Coast darkness, and the high priestess of doom. –Louise Burns Rating:

#WEHAVEPRIDE

WELCOME

Welcome to Vancouver Pride 2015 CARYL DOLINKO @westendervan

Every year, all over the world, the LGBTQ community has what some might call a “family reunion”. We all meet up for Pride, and sometime in the week leading up to the big day, we get our hair cut, go to the gym for our last set of ab crunches and make sure our outfits are fabulous so that we look our best for the “cousins” we see once a year. We celebrate in many ways around the world: we march, we protest, we host festivals or put on parades, but whatever it is we do, we call it Pride. For that one day, we are visible and proud and we welcome everybody to celebrate our community at our reunion. No matter where you might be for Pride, you know that once you step into it, you’re a part of it. And if you’re not, you want to be. There is joy, love, laughter, acceptance and a sense of elation and wild abandon

Caryl Dolinko at the spectacle. For that one day, we don’t have to hide, we don’t have to be afraid and we don’t have to feel shame, for there are thousands and thousands of us standing together, united as one. It’s on this day that Pride links us together, wherever we are. There’s a familiar and welcoming feeling when you arrive at Pride. It’s not just the leather men, gyrating twinks, colourful drag queens, sporty softball jocks, or topless women. There’s something in our spirits that’s visible

to those who look past the party. It doesn’t show itself by waving a rainbow flag nor does it need to march. It’s the deep sense that we’re a family that’s journeyed here, and now we’re connected in celebration. When we show up at Pride, our visibility lets LGBTQ people around the world know that we are here, we are their voice and they are not forgotten. We honour those who paved the way to get us here, we march for those who cannot march, we speak for those who cannot speak and we continue to forge ahead and fight for equal rights everywhere. The route to victory begins with you showing up at Pride. We may see a part of ourselves, even for a moment, in those who march in the parade, or in those who dance and celebrate. As they carry the rainbow flag through the crowds and down the streets or wave them at picnics, or fly them as kites, we claim this

day as ours and we can proudly say, “I’m here! This is my community, my family, and I’m one of them.” Next time you stand at the roadside and watch the dykes on bikes kick off the parade, the floats,

the marchers, the boas, the boys and all the pageantry, be proud to know that this is our family. And, like all families, we may have our fights, our struggles, even our drunk aunts and our inappropriate uncles, but more

than anything, we have each other. On this one day, we can put away our strife and join together because this is our day, our Pride, and through this, we are forever linked. Happy Pride! W

Beyond the binary: KRISTYN ANTHONY @westendervan

Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, it’s likely you’ve tuned in, picked up or scrolled through some sort of media giving face to the transgender movement. What you may not have no-

ticed is that for every piece of Caitlyn Jenner clickbait, there is another story of a transgender man or woman whose journey has not been filled filled with designer dresses and national coverage. Last May, TIME magazine published “The Transgender Tipping Point”, a story heavily focused on Laverne Cox, a transgender woman of colour best known for her roles as a television actress and trans activist. While both Jenner and Cox’s stories of self-discovery, struggle and eventual success, are important, so too are the countless stories of transgender and gender variant people, who are making change on the ground, in their homes and communities. This year, the Vancouver Pride Society has chosen “Gender Super Heroes” as its theme for the Pride Parade, requiring parade participants to pledge support for West End NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert’s private member’s bill calling for the specific specific inclusion of transgender and gender-variant people in the BC Human Rights Code. While Vancouver has long been known as a safe haven for the LGBTQ community, many in the transgender com-

munity struggle for recognition and respect. For some, that struggle is life-or-death. Jessie Anderson is a 24year old transgender man whose mission to create an inclusive queer/trans space here in Vancouver is taking shape in the form of Big Bro’s Barbershop. A barber by trade, Anderson’s aim is to provide a brick-andmortar presence to a nearinvisible community. “People are constantly assessing you and forming their own opinion of your gender as a visibly trans person,” he explains. “Offering an inclusive idea of what masculinity can look like means no client’s requested services will ever be denied or modified based on how I, or any other service provider has chosen to interpret the client’s gender.” Knowing he was always “some flavour of queer”, Anderson began binding his chest at 13, and transitioned from female to male at 16, while attending Vancouver Technical Secondary School. He remembers the process as relatively easy; people were taken aback, not by the idea of being transgender, but by his honesty about it. “I started Grade 12 with male pronouns, and fortunately for me, never had to change my given name,” he says. Anderson’s desire to provide resources for his community goes beyond a snappy, new hair cut. Formerly employed by

Little Sister’s, Anderson was behind the expansion of gender-affirming products for trans people including the sale of chest binders, gaff underwear (used for tucking the penis), breast enhancers, and “packers”. With Big Bro’s, Anderson wants to stock the shelves with these and other muchneeded resources, including literature about healthcare, how to explore options, and to simply provide a space to meet other trans individuals. “I want to essentially build my own world,” he says. “A place where trans people are the priority, not the side note.” Temporarily working out of his West End apartment while raising money through a Go Fund Me, Anderson has procured a 500-squarefoot space in Mount Pleasant to be Big Bro’s permanent home. With an accessible washroom and room for two or three stylist chairs, his long-term vision includes a gender variant staff, able to provide a myriad of resources for the community, allies and family. “I want this to be a place families visit,” says Anderson. “What do you do when your kid comes out as trans? There are no resources for that right now.” Designing a business model to serve the needs of a community that statistically has the lowest amount of disposable income is a risky business venture. According to BC Poverty

Reduction, trans and nongender confirming people have double the unemployment rate as the general population, and one in five have been refused houses or apartments because of their gender identity or expression. In Ontario, 71 per cent of trans people have at least some post-secondary education, yet almost 50 per cent are living on $15,000 or less a year. Plans are in motion for a store credit system, as well as a community credit fund. For Anderson, the need for a safe supportive space is immediate. A recent study by the University of Western Ontario found 11 per cent of transgendered people surveyed had attempted suicide in the past year, compared to just 0.6 per cent of the general population. The study identified the availability of support as the leading factor in the prevention of suicides in the trans community. “The clock is ticking,” says Anderson. “This is a space that needs to exist now; it had to exist last year. Trans people are dying now.” Elijah James understands the need for greater support and visibilty for transgendered youth. Born female, James struggled throughout his teens to come to terms with a body that didn’t represent who he was inside. “I knew I didn’t fit in, and found it tough to find others I could have these conversa-

James Kelly is a board member for QMUNITY, BC’s queer resource centre and is the executive director of the Peak House youth treatment centre. Contributed photo tions with growing up in Kelowna,” he says. Dropping out of high school and moving to Vancouver was a necessity in order to explore his gender identity and search for resources. James soon met two transgender men through mutual friends, and describes the encounter as an out-of-body experience. “I remember being in a dream-like state, watching and learning about these people,” he explains. “I realized there were options outside of identifying as a lesbian. I knew they were like me, they were real, and so this for me, was finally real.” James transitioned at 24, and says he felt a strong sense that he was losing a part of himself in his transition, trying to achieve an image of the quintessential

male; one who doesn’t possess what society deems stereotypical feminine characteristics. “I had to change who I was on the outside so people would treat me how I felt on the inside,” James says. “The most frustrating part about transitioning were the lies I had to tell in order to be believed by a system holding the power of approval.” Post-transition, James says he was able to focus on selfdiscovery beyond his gender identity for the first time. So, years after leaving the confining halls of a small town high school behind, James decided to return to school, graduate, and go on to study psychology and social work. “As I’ve grown up and come into my own, I’ve realized that I’m really good at helping people,” says James.

Today, James dedicates his time and energy as a stable, and present voice on the phone at Chimo Community Services Crisis Lines, providing folks of all ages and genders a safe space to connect and be heard. For James, to assume one trans person can define the trans experience of everyone in the whole world is ridiculous, and impossible. While there are certain realities that many transgender people share – being asked disrespectful questions, devising secretive behaviours, feeling like they have to hide parts of themselves, and feeling uncomfortable for various reasons – no one person can speak for everyone, nor should they.

Continued from page B5 But, creating safe spaces, means talking about it. And, having recently become a parent, this is what James is now doing more of. Conceiving their daughter through IVF, James and his wife realized in order to raise their child in the open, honest, and unashamed way in which they live their own lives, a certain amount of autonomy would have to be sacrificed. “Everybody feels entitled to know what is going on,” says James. “This is about my life, my goals, my journey, to find the meaning in my life. But becoming a parent has shown me my child has to learn how to navigate this, also. “The safest, most loving and logical path is to not keep this a secret. If we’re not talking about it, we’re creating shame around it and you can’t tease someone for something they don’t feel shame for.” James also volunteers with Big Brothers of Canada mentoring a nine-year-old boy once a week – his interest in the organization having been sparked by his own frustration of the limited constructs of masculinity. “Big Brother is an organization built around socializing males and I wanted to have the opportunity to be a role model

@WESTENDERVAN

that transcends the narrow view of what it means to be a man,” he explains. “I don’t think gender is as important as society makes it.” There were no representations of any sort of gender diversity in Vancouver’s suburbs when James Kelly was growing up in Richmond, 30-odd years ago. Raised in a religious family, Kelly describes his childhood as that of a moderately content child. “I don’t feel like I have the typical trans lineage story. I think many of us don’t,” he says. “There is this idea that there is a certain process, that you’re young and you’ve always known and you’re born in the wrong body and then you go through a series of medical procedures and then you’re successfully transitioned. “There’s a story that gets told, and that we tell ourselves, and that wasn’t my experience.” He describes the queer community as a place where he was able to live with enough comfort and safety to express his masculinity until transgender visibility grew. The feeling that something didn’t quite fit, suddenly had a word and a definition to articulate it. “The representation that did exist was not favourable, and you didn’t actually know anyone who was living a happy life in their preferred gender,” he says of those years.

In recent months, Caitlyn Jenner has become the face of the transgender community. And so at 38, after describing his experience as “occupying a middle space for a long time”, Kelly began the journey to become physically male. “It was really through networking with friends that I was able to access the care that I wanted and that really highlighted the privileged position I’m in, living in Vancouver and in the queer community,” he points out. As the executive director of Peak House, a provincial alcohol and drug treatment centre for youth 13-18 of all genders, Kelly lives within this comparative privilege day to day. He transitioned with a supportive network of co-workers, and an insider’s perspective on how to

navigate an often problematic medical system, especially in terms of trans healthcare. The wait list for subcutaneous mastectomy, or “top surgery”, currently sits around the two-year mark. There is only one physician in all of BC who performs the procedure, and currently no operating room time is dedicated to it. Up until recently, guidelines required trans individuals to live what was referred to as, “Real Lived Experience”, meaning, to live in your chosen gender for a year. For trans people who may not pass as the opposite gender in the eyes of society, this can be an incredibly unsafe reality. “The gate-keeping practices have opened and they’re saying

‘great, surgery is covered’, but you can’t get it,” Kelly says. “What happens to someone while they’re on a waitlist can be really detrimental to their well being.“ Private care is an option, requiring the patient to pay out of pocket for surgery, often in another province or country, but post-surgery care is often completely inaccessible. Kelly was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Ohio for top surgery. However, for many trans people, the travel and the expense put private surgery out of reach. “Trans people are not receiving the same level of healthcare the rest of BC residents have come to expect,” says Kelly. “We have longer wait times, confusing regulations and a general lack of awareness and knowledge around our healthcare needs.” It is this stark reality that drives Kelly to live a life dedicated to helping build bridges, to be out about his trans identity and to lead by example. “It’s important to me that young people in our program have direct access to the people in power,” he says, “Currently two of our 10 beds are occupied by people who identify outside the gender binary.” In addition to his role at Peak House, Kelly is a board member of QMUNITY, BC’s queer resource centre. He is active in community engagement, facilitating workshops and providing consultation services alongside community organizations to help support safe and inclusive spaces for trans and gender non-conforming people and their allies. Deeply committed to social justice work, Kelly’s aim is to improve the wellbeing of his community. “We have a history in this

country of not supporting marginalized communities,” Kelly says, “and gender is the next place of learning for society.” Despite the media coverage of the trans community in recent months, accurate representations of transgender individuals, let alone positive ones, have been few. Many in the transgender community feel the public’s perception of what it means to be trans – what it looks like and who it involves – has been distorted and sensationalized by the media. Instead of stories about the countless trans victims of suicide and murder, the attention is focussed on Jenner, whose visibility is very much a double-edged sword, sending a misconstrued message of acceptance. However, Jenner, herself, is using her newfound visibility to shine a light on the often violent reality of transgender life. “11 trans women have been killed in the United States in the past six months – most of them trans women of color,” Jenner wrote on her website earlier this week. “No one should be killed simply because they are transgender.” Despite the difference in their personal experiences, Anderson, James and Kelly’s shared philosophy of inclusion is the same. Working to provide space for the trans community in a society that leaves little room for it, begins with visibility and understanding. As Jenner she so poignantly said in her acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Award of Courage at the ESPY’s, “while it may not be easy to get past the things you [don’t always] understand, I want to prove it is absolutely possible – if we only, do it together.” W

GRAND MARSHALS

Meet your 2015 Pride Parade grand marshals ROAN REIMER

Roan Reimer is a transgender youth activist from the LGBTQA+ community, who primarily works within schools and the public education system. As the District Student Representative on the Vancouver School Board’s Pride advisory committee, Reimer was part of the writing of the revision of the school district’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policy. Reimer went on to become the student figurehead of the movement, after being the first speaker at the public consultation meetings held by the VSB in the spring of 2014. Recently, Reimer spoke at Interesting Vancouver 2014, the Higher Ground conference, TEDx in St. John’s and co-founded Vancouver’s gender-inclusive Roller Derby League in 2013. Reimer sits on the panel for IGNTIE! youth arts festival and helped send a group of Vancouver students to the Breaking the Silence national conference in Saskatoon, to present on the school board policy this past March. Reimer has been a mem-

ber of their school’s Gender and Sexualities Alliance since starting high school in 2010, and is currently the president of the 25+ member group, one of the largest in Vancouver. When there is spare time, Reimer loves gardening, painting and, of course, roller derby.

MICHELLE FORTIN

Michelle Fortin has been involved in community development and activism since her early days with the Vancouver Dyke March. An advocate for safe spaces and inclusion, Fortin believes her greatest accomplishment as she leaves her five-year presidency of the VDM was securing an alignment with the Vancouver Pride Society, while remaining true to the individual cultures of each organization. Fortin has spent three years serving on the City’s LGBTQ Committee, focusing on the yearly Pride festivities as well as transgender issues and policy making at the Parks level. As executive director of WATARI, Vancouver’s Counselling and Support Services Society, Fortin

has been at the helm of the QTT Health Equity Collaborative dedicated to ensuring financial resources are available in order to access health care and counselling for queer, trans, and two-spirited youth and individuals.

ROMI CHANDRA HERBERT

Born and raised on the island of Fiji, Herbert fled to Vancouver in 1989 with his family after experiencing firsthand the effects of oppression and colonization. Developing a passion for justice, democracy and safety for marginalized communities, eight years later he started BC’s first Gay/ Straight Alliance in Maple Ridge. Volunteering with Youthquest!, he made it his mission to create safe spaces for rural queer youth in Surrey, Port Moody, New Westminster, Abbotsford and Port Alberni. As a result, he was responsible for engaging politicians to start funding queer youth programs and was hired as a youth worker for Qmunity. During his five years there, Herbert ran two drop-in programs, and

a program specifically for Asian youth. Herbert has been behind such projects as the anti-racism program for the North Shore Multicultural Society and co-ordinator for Vancouver Coastal Health’s Planetahead and Condomania programs, increasing queer content on sexual health programs in schools. He has written curriculum for QMUNITY’s PrideSpeak program, and conducted anti-homophobia/ transphobia workshops for students across the province. He has authored curriculum for programs such as Evolve: No One Gets Left Behind, Vancouver Coastal Health’s CALL OUT program, Be The Change and Out on Screen’s Out in School program. Currently, Herbert is the co-executive director of PeerNetBC, a non-profit that facilitates anti-oppression and skills development training for peer-led groups and spaces across BC. He also lectures at the Justice Institute of BC, and represents Canada internationally on human rights issues worldwide. W –Kristyn Anthony

LGBTQ READS

Three LGBTQ must-reads

KRISTYN ANTHONY @westendervan

writing that even fully grown, she’s no adult. On finally reaching her deathbed she decides, “I want to have lived. To have taken chances. To not have settled for the poor person’s reduced experience of life, shackled to a job, making ends meet, but to have lived as much like a rich person as I could, with their fuller experience of the world, with travel and art and proximity to things beautiful. I wanted to live like I wasn’t afraid, like life was there for my taking.”

QUEER AND PLEASANT DANGER

Kate Bornstein

The story of “a nice Jewish boy who joins the Church of Scientology, and leaves 12 years later to become the lovely lady she is today” is like reading about a handful of lifetimes in one. Bornstein – assigned male at birth in late 1940s New Jersey – embarks on an incredible journey of selfdiscovery within the unique climate of late-‘70s L. Ron Hubbard Scientology. At the root of Hubbard’s now infamous religion, is the belief that each Scientologist’s human form contains a thetan, the genderless spirit used as a control system between itself and the physical universe. Bornstein writes the most comprehensive understanding of Scientology I’ve come across, while simultaneously conveying what a very appealing idea it would have all seemed, in a time before we properly acknowledged gender fluidity, and the concept of being transgender.

WHEN EVERYTHING FEELS LIKE THE MOVIES

HOW TO GROW UP

Raziel Reid

Everyone’s favourite lesbian literature maven is back with another selection of stories. This time, instead of running wild through the streets of San Francisco, she’s quietly seated at her store-bought vintage writing table, reflecting on how it came to be that she A) bought the damn thing rather than dragging it in off the street and B) is 41 and engaged. For anyone who identifies as queer and feels like maybe that put us slightly behind the “natural” order of life’s milestones (for whatever reason),Tea sets us all at ease,

It’s not every day that a 24-year-old first time novelist wins the Governor General’s Award, and then promptly finds it petitioned based on the content of his work. Content that is so glaringly absent from the greater discussion surrounding LGBTQ youth and the sex they’re having. Part coming-of-age story, part survival guidebook, and inspired by true events, Reid’s novel hits the mark at every turn encapsulating readers, with a mix of hilarity, bravery and a very raw, honest look at how we treat others when we don’t understand them. And likely the best sex scene ever committed to celluloid that blends seduction and dominance with a turning-the-tables soliloquy on self-determination and colonialism – and a gorgeous drop of olive oil. Irreverently spanning the themes of queer lives, art, and sacrifice in the name of love and nation, Greenaway offers a middle pointer to contemporary homophobia and state control (especially in the direction of the Russian state that prides itself on Eisenstein’s legacy). GRANDMA

Lily Tomlin fans, rejoice! She’s clearly having a ball in 3=FNAOF, a rousing, exhilarating joyride that brings limitless energy and a decidedly un-Hollywood approach to storytelling about three generations of women. Here, the carefree feminist plot reveals itself early when Elle’s (Lily Tomlin) granddaughter Sage shows up on her doorstep seeking $600 for an abortion. Neither of them has the money so they set out on a road trip (in Tomlin’s own 1955 Dodge Royal) to get it without involving Sage’s mom, Judy (Marcia Gay Harden). Their journey sparks new life in Elle, a self-described misanthrope who’s been grieving the loss of her long-term love. Watch for supporting performances by the wonderful Laverne Cox, Judy Greer, and Sam Elliott too. 9 4=$AF2H <7(G D+H #"EE>OH 1$L /&?F:=?

chilling social isolation and bullying at school begins to change once she finds friendship and community in the Vagine Regime. They’re a kick-ass international queer roller derby team that (unlike Crystal’s school sports teams) is trans-inclusive, and they welcome Crystal with open arms. As organizer Alex Krosney describes it: “Imagine spending your entire life keeping quiet about a huge part of yourself, then suddenly literally tumbling into a community of people who shout so loud about it that you can’t keep it down.” The film pivots to the experiences of the grassroots community that is the Vagine Regime and how members reach out to support Crystal. This heart-tugging documentary demonstrates how a small but mighty group are lead jammers in the movement for trans-inclusive policies in sport. The VQFF will be hosting director Erica Tremblay, Crystal and her mother Karen as special guests for this Vancouver premiere of one of the most buzzedabout films of the year. 9 0F:7=AF2H <7(G D)H '"+)>OH 04. 3L!ACL=> 8?N:=? *L= :&? <=:; M,LLA5F=AP;K 9 /&7=;AF2H <7(G BEH #"D)>OH 04. 3L!ACL=> 8?N:=? *L= :&? <=:; M,LLA5F=AP;K

THE CULT OF JT LEROY

The infamous writer who sparked “the postmodern trial of the century”, JT LeRoy, a 15-year-old transgendered sex worker, was hailed for writing heartwrenching novels. Chuck Palahniuk described LeRoy as having the “authentic voice of someone who suffers.” Known for being deeply shy, LeRoy was encircled by a Warholian world of celebrities including Winona Ryder, Rosario Dawson, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Bernhard, Gus Van Sant, Shirley Manson, Lou Reed and numerous writers and agents. But at the peak of LeRoy’s 10-year rise came a rapid fall from grace. Says writer Dennis Cooper in the film, “From the beginning,

VANCOUVER DYKE MARCH

Vancouver Dyke March celebrates 12 years KRISTYN ANTHONY @westendervan

Every year as Pride celebrations get underway and the Davie Street Village becomes the epicentre for all things loud and proud, over on the East Side, the Dyke March celebrates in its own way, taking to the streets. The grassroots organiza-

tion first strutted down Commercial Drive in 2004. The small gathering was put together through the volunteer efforts of seven women recognizing a need for greater visibility for women in the LGBTQ community. The inaugural walk saw only a few hundred participants, but now, in its 12th year, the

Vancouver Dyke March and Festival Society present this staple Pride event, drawing thousands of women, allies, family and friends. “The Dyke March gives women a place to come forward, meet interesting, likeminded people and play important roles in creating change within the community,” explains former VDM

SPECIALIZING IN FRESH SEAFOOD since

1981

president Sam Levy. Over the past decade, the event has seen a lot of change and growth. What started as a two-block saunter has evolved into a full-on march beginning at McSpadden Park, winding along half of The Drive to the festival site. Crowdgoers merge in Grandview Park for an afternoon of family fun where artisan vendors, drag performers and live music keep crowds entertained, all hosted by the hilarious Amy Wilding. “People like the differentiation of an event in East Van,” Levy says. The Dyke March wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated board of volunteers who meet monthly throughout the year. Fundraising is imperative, and Diva’s Den – a women-for-women-centred strip show encouraging amateur performers to get on stage and let loose in a safe and supported environment – is a key financial contributor. As sexuality and gender identity become more fluid, the historical relevance

of the Dyke March is more important than ever. Maintaining the history of pride, visibility and family –the principles on which the march was built – is integral in the ongoing fight against homophobia and transphobia. The Vancouver Dyke March starts at noon on Saturday, Aug. 1 at McSpadden Park, on Victoria Drive between East 4th and East 6th Avenue. ASL interpreters will be on site at the festival grounds at Grandview Park, and pets on leash are welcome, too. W $&/!,1+)*.('#*0/.,%-,1"

LBGT community can bank on TD’s support As the Vancouver Pride parade’s presenting sponsor, TD Bank Group puts its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting the LBGT community. From corporate headquarters to its neighbourhood branches, TD supports and celebrates diversity and inclusion in every corner of the company, cultivating a work environment that encourages employees to “bring their whole selves” to work. “You can talk about your personal life without any worry that it’s going to affect your career. Actually, I would say it’s the opposite here – bringing your whole self to work could actually help your career,” says Jeff Meerman, co-chair of TD’s LGBTA diversity leadership council in B.C. An employee-led, grassroots movement initiated the bank’s involvement with Vancouver’s Pride 11 years ago. Grant Minish, who worked at a TD branch in Burnaby at the time, rallied his coworkers to build a float for the popular West End parade. “For me personally, I think it’s really about a celebration of who I am and the journey that I’ve had as a gay man,” says Minish, who grew up on a farm in Northern Saskatchewan in the ’70s and ’80s and today is the Regional Manager for LBGT Business Development, a newly-created role that puts Grant as the “face” of the bank in the LGBT community. “Pride is really important because it shows

people who are having challenges that it gets better.” TD held its annual kick-off beach-themed party for Pride, called “Forever Proud,” on July 15 with an estimated 350 people in attendance at Davie Street’s Junction pub. TD used the gathering as a chance to give back to the LBGT community with a $2,000 donation to QMUNITY (BC’s queer resource centre) and a donation to A Loving Spoonful. TD’s advocacy for the LBGT community goes well beyond Vancouver, where it’s been Pride’s presenting sponsor for the last six years. The bank supports 42 Pride events across North America, along with anti-bullying campaigns and support for a number of non-profit organizations. TD also promotes equality inside its own doors with a number of initiatives to support LGBT employees. For example, in 2009 TD developed Workplace Transition Guidelines to support transgender employees who choose to transition in the workplace. In addition, the company has an extensive Employee Pride Network that enables employees to share ideas and experiences. Over 3,000 employees in Canada have joined the network since 2005, with more than 300 of those being in B.C.

The Queer Arts Festival is known for being provocative, but this year’s programming comes with a Trigger warning. Building on the 25th anniversary of Kiss & Tell’s groundbreaking Drawing the Line exhibition (the Vancouver photography show has since been cited in the Oxford Dictionary of Art as the epitome of LGBT art), and the modern controversy surrounding the work of local young adult author Raziel Reid, QAF organizers sought to explore the theme of where people draw the line today,

Comfort key for furry patients Yaletown might be known as the neighbourhood of small dogs, but there are a lot of large pooches tucked away in those downtown towers. And Dr. Rob Spooner, owner of Yaletown Pet Hospital, has seen many of those multi-sized furry family members in the neighbourhood and beyond since he opened in 2003. “My smallest patient is 1.5 kilos, largest is 60 or 70 (kilos),” says the veterinarian. “It’s not unusual to go from a Chihuahua to a Bullmastiff from one appointment to the next … it’s never boring.” The full-service hospital offers a variety of dog and cat vet services, including emergency care, routine preventive care, vaccines, a pharmacy, surgical pet care services, and more. When Spooner, a practicing vet since 1989, opened the clinic he drew on his previous experience, choosing what worked and learning from what didn’t at the other clinics where he’d worked. As a result, he built a sleek-yet-inviting and open space

that cultivates a cosy space for his patients’ families. “I wanted it to be a warm and inviting space,” he says. “I didn’t want it to be sterile white walls and plastic furniture. I wanted it to be a place that I wanted to walk into to work everyday, as well as I want the clients to be comfortable there.” Like many youngsters, Spooner, a prairie boy, wanted to be a vet from the time he was five years old. After 25 years in the business, he says the passion is still there and one of the ways he keeps it alive is through his volunteer work with CAAT (the Canadian Animal Assistance Team). He has travelled throughout BC, as well as the Yukon and several trips abroad to Botswana, Africa, to help provide sterilization, vaccination, and basic medical services to the cat and dog populations. Along with Spooner,Yaletown Pet Hospital has a team of knowledgeable vets, Jay Korbelik, Jessica Robertson, Deb Archeck, and Roxanne Vandermeer, as well as a team of dedicated support staff who are committed to providing the best care for family pets of all sizes.

“A very practical car. Superbly reliable.”

It’s par for the course these days, now that the web series sphere and juggernauts like Netflix have altered the entertainment playing field beyond recognition. Appointment television, if not completely dead, is a dinosaur, and the power to decide when and how to experience screen entertainment lies increasingly with the viewer instead of a broadcaster. Riftworld: Chronicles is especially easy to bingewatch. Each episode of the new CBC Punchline original series clocks in at around six minutes, so a full-season binge-watch can happen in under an hour. “The number one thing I’m reading on Twitter is, ‘Loved it, it’s great, give me Season 2 now.’ This is the problem,” says Tahmoh Penikett, who co-stars alongside with Erin Karpluk (Being Erica) in Riftworld: Chronicles, in a recent phone interview. “They bingewatched it, they loved it, but now it’s done.” But hopefully not for good; the season ends on a cliffhanger, and Reel People is among the many bingewatchers eager to find out what happens next to Alar of Caer Caladh (Penikett), a wizard who finds himself stranded in Toronto after one of his spells goes awry, and the struggling journalist Kim (Karpluk) who attempts to help get him back home. Boxing clichés collide in Antoine Fuqua’s gritty drama Southpaw. Fortunately, Jake Gyllenhaal’s brawny shoulders are able to carry the heavy load. Reigning junior middleweight boxing champion Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) has everything going for him – fame, fortune, a lavish lifestyle, and the love of a devoted wife and daughter. But, after tragedy strikes, Billy loses it all and must claw his way back to the top with the help of local gym owner Tick Willis (Whitaker). Fuqua’s grim approach and heavy-handed storytelling make for a rather joyless affair and Southpaw is a familiar tale woven many times before, often with more creative flair. However, the film’s paint by numbers execution is largely saved by Gyllen-

is a relatively new one for the veteran Vancouver actor, whose lengthy credit list includes long-running roles on Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, Bomb Girls, Supernatural, Continuum, and Strange Empire; he appeared as Stryker in Kevin Tancharoen’s 2011 web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, so this isn’t his first kick at the web series can. The Toronto-shot, crowdfunded Riftworld: Chronicles grew out of The Portal, a short film from emerging filmmaker Jonathan Williams. Penikett likely wouldn’t have appeared in The Portal had he not heard that Karpluk, an old friend from his acting school days, was also attached to the project. “The funny thing is – we keep telling this story, and the producers hate it – but they told Erin the same thing. They gave Erin the impression that they knew me, and that I was attached and she signed on,” laughs Penikett. “A couple of days into shooting [The Portal], she was like, ‘how do you know these guys?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know these guys, you know these guys.’ They duped us.” But it worked out – and Riftworld: Chronicles gave Penikett the opportunity to further explore the web series medium, and benefit from the challenges of working within what he describes as a “conservative budget.”

Continued on page 20 haal’s grim determination and sheer physicality; when he steps into the ring and starts busting bodies, there is never any doubt he has transformed completely into the brooding boxer. Rachel McAdams and Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson provide ample support, though their characters are largely two-dimensional. At least Whitaker, showing his acting fortitude and veteran wisdom, creates a compelling, albeit small, role. Inevitably, Southpaw leads to a final, highlytouted boxing match between Billy and an archrival. The climactic fight is genuinely riveting; every blood-soaked blow to the head is visceral and it’s hard not to root for the hero to drop his adversary like a ton of bricks in spectacular fashion. Once things conclude, it’s clear the movie amounts to a rather hollow experience; yet, Gyllenhaal’s commitment to character, all evident on screen, is often mesmerizing. W -Thor Diakow

Sunshine Coast waterfront houses cost less than a city bungalow

For the average price of a Vancouver bungalow – $1.5 million, according to Royal LePage – buyers could purchase prime waterfront property fairly close to the city, according to a survey by Western Investor. While average detached house prices for areas served by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver have risen 64 per cent since the 2008 financial crisis – and more than doubled in Vancouver - they have barely budged in the rest of the province. Coastal real estate prices outside of the Lower Mainland are now the same or, in many cases, lower than seven years ago, according to the BC Real Estate Association and local realtors. Western Investor’s survey turned up some waterfront listings that may tempt

Vancouver Island, the forestry town has both oceanfront and lakefront properties.Western Investor’s pick here is a two-bedroom house of 1,466 square feet on 0.75-acres of landscaped, level oceanfront.. The listed price is $499,900, through Powell River realtor Warren Behan. Gulf Islands: Prices have come down from the peak of eight years ago, said Janet Moore, a Royal LePage agent in Nanaimo. Moore, a specialist in waterfront property, provided two examples from ferry-accessible Thetis Island: a 2.7-acre, west-facing waterfront parcel with a 1,100-square foot house listed at $675,000; and a 1.6-acre level waterfront property with a high-end, 1,800-square-foot house for $1.25 million. –Courtesy of BIV.com

@WholeNourishBC

Barbecues are a great opportunity to show off your best side dish, but what if you don’t have one? Maybe you only have one recipe in your repertoire and it’s from one of those index cards in the produce aisle at Safeway, but today you are passing it off as your own creation. This time you will have everyone convinced that you are some sort of master chef, maybe you will even add cumin. Or maybe you have been invited to a barbecue and you have no idea what to make or you lack any sort of culinary finesse. Put down the grocery store veggie or fruit platter and don’t bug your mom for her mayo-laden pasta salad recipe you loved when you were eight years old. There is another way for you to rock that barbecue side dish like a boss. Most of the time when I go to barbecue, there are about five different green salads and some sort of fruit on a plate (it may or may not be cut up into edible sizes). Next barbecue, razzle dazzle your friends with your own creation or a classic with a twist.Your vegetarian friends will love you because they get to eat, and your other friends will be impressed and want to pick your brain about the complicated measures it took to create that delicious dish. Eat up the glory, but don’t worry my friend, you don’t have to be a professional chef to impress. All you need is a little creativity and a knife. Here are some ideas to get those creative juices flowing.

POTATO SALAD

Forget the standard potato salad recipe with mayo and

yellow mustard, get creative and daring by using yogurt, garlic and dill for the dressing. Tired of regular potatoes? Try mixing it up by using sweet potato or yam, the ingredients you already have in your kitchen are endless so are all the recipes of the Internet.

ing these puppies, add some flavour to it. Either right after grilling or together in tinfoil on the barbecue, add flavours like butter, lemon juice, dill, Parmesan or even blue cheese. You won’t regret it, and neither will your mouth.

FRUIT KABOBS

Grill it, do it. Get a head of romaine cut in half lengthwise, throw some flavour on it and just go nuts. Do it.

Instead of going for the ol’ reliable fruit platter, get in the zone and impress your friends with this tasty treat! All you need are kabob sticks and fruits of your choosing. Make a fruity yogurt dip for it if you like. These fruity kabobs will be loved by all and are a hit with kids too.

VEGGIE KABOBS

You could go classic with veggie kabobs, but try putting a spin on it by marinating the veggies in a yummy sauce of your creation and saving some to put on top when serving for an extra kick.

COLESLAW

Again, drop the mayo, get real interesting with a vinaigrette dressing instead of a creamy one and your vegan friends will love you. All you need is some cabbage, carrots, radish, maybe some shredded beets? I have even added homemade sauerkraut to mine, it’s pretty awesome.

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS

This can be a big hit, all you have to do is roast them in the oven with some balsamic vinegar, sea salt and pepper. I personally like to add grapes and walnuts and have recently tried some with Parmesan cheese. It’s seriously a cornucopia of flavour hitting your taste buds. You can even wrap them in tin foil and stick them right in the barbecue.

CORN ON THE COB

Forget boiling or steam-

If you’ve driven the Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish or Whistler over the past year, it’s impossible not to have noticed the string of slime green gondolas inching up the mountainside as far as the eye can see. Chances are good you have not yet stopped to explore this intriguing new roadside attraction. Maybe it’s the costly single ticket admission price tag or maybe it’s your subconscious telling you not to give in to an attraction that screams “tourist trap”. But whatever it is that’s prevented you from checking out the Sea to Sky Gondola until now, get over it. The Sea to Sky Gondola experience is like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So no excuses, this is the season to check out this super cool adventure. After taking the 10-minuteish ride to 2,900 feet above sea level, be prepared to be amazed. The ride seems endless, but upon arrival at basecamp, BAM!You are smack in the middle of a fullydeveloped, natural wonderland high above Howe Sound. From an impeccably manicured trail system to an epic suspension bridge and stage area, you’ll quickly discover there is more to this adventure than meets the eye.

Continued from page 16 “With that comes a very improvisational, spontaneous style of acting,” says Penikett. “We’re working a different muscle. We didn’t have all day to shoot scenes. We didn’t shoot them and do as much coverage and as many takes as you would normally with, say, an American television series with a large budget.” “It makes you trust in your technique and your skills, and you’ve got to go for it,” he adds. The medium might be new for Penikett, but the genre – a mash-up of science fiction and fantasy – is hardly new territory for the Yukonborn actor, who portrayed Captain Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon on Battlestar Galactica. “We’re one little speck in the universe and there’s so much that we have yet to discover, other life forms and beautiful technologies and even our own human capacity,” says Penikett. “I don’t think we’ve reached anywhere near our true

Rod McInnes photo Make sure to leave the day wide open; you won’t want to rush your visit. Pack enough for a full day-trip including snacks, water and layers. Although the summit lodge offers plenty of food and beverage options, heading off into the backcountry trail system means you need to come prepared. Check the website in advance for details on daily activities and events. Mountaintop yoga, free tours and live music on select Fridays make the attraction even more appealing and unique so be on the lookout for these specials. Grab a map as soon as you arrive in the Promised Land, high above the Stawamus Chief. The available backcountry access routes are unreal. If you’ve got the gusto and consider yourself a seasoned hiker, try hiking up the Sea to Sky Summit Trail (7.5km, three-five hours one way) up steep and challenging sections complete with fixed ropes. Once at the top,

the trail system is endless. Although spontaneity can be fun and exciting, so is saving a few bucks by pre-buying tickets online. If you love to hike, explore backcountry trails or just be a tourist high above the sea, go ahead and invest in a Sea to Sky Gondola summer or annual pass. Online single round trip tickets are range from $11.95 for kids six-12, to $33.95 for adults. Kids five and under are free, and a family of four (two adults and two kids) pays $95.95. Passes on the other hand are the way to go. Summer passes are valid May-November and cost $109 for an adult, $274 for a family. An annual adult pass is $179 and an annual family pass is $449. Be sure to check the hours of operation, web cams and live feed before you go.The ride back down is just as breathtaking. Adventure on! W

potential, and I think people who watch genre shows, they believe in that magic, they believe in that possibility, and they have that imagination, and that’s why we’re drawn to it.” Storytelling is in Penikett’s blood. His father (former Yukon premier Tony Penikett) is a playwright. His grandfather was a Shakespearean actor. And – on his First Nations side – his grandmother was a riveting storyteller. “I’ve always respected an amazing storyteller: someone who can captivate the room and really make people listen,” says Penikett. “It’s an art form that usually takes a lifetime to get really good at, and that’s why elders are often the best storytellers, and that’s why my grandmother, even though she didn’t have the best English, she was a fantastic storyteller. When she spoke, people listened.” And Penikett – who coexecutive produced and costarred in 2010’s The Hostage alongside his best friend Aleks Paunovic – may soon be sharing his own stories with the world: he’s started writing.

“I’ve tried for years to write, and I don’t know if I’m doing it successfully, but in a perfect world, I will be able to bring one of these projects to life in the near future,” says Penikett. As for Riftworld: Chronicles, it might be a while before fans find out what happens next for Alar of Caer Caladh and Kim of Toronto. “The response already has been tremendous. I can’t even keep up on Twitter and social media right now with the response that we’re getting, which is great, but we’re only in the first couple of days here. I want to see where we are in a week, and then we’ll assess it,” says Penikett. “We really have to assess it. I want to see what the fan response is, and the ultimately the networks, and we’ll see what kind of money we get involved, and whether we can all make it happen.” W

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny “I am very much in love with no one in particular,” says actor Ezra Miller. His statement would make sense coming out of your mouth right about now. So would this one: “I am very much in love with almost everyone I encounter.” Or this one: “I am very much in love with the wind and moon and hills and rain and rivers.” Is this going to be a problem? How will you deal with your overwhelming urge to overflow? Will you break people’s hearts and provoke uproars everywhere you go, or will you rouse delight and bestow blessings? As long as you take yourself lightly, I foresee delight and blessings.

In her io9.com article on untranslatable words, Esther Inglis-Arkell defines the Chinese term wei-wu-wei as “conscious non-action... a deliberate, and principled, decision to do nothing whatsoever, and to do it for a particular reason.” In my astrological opinion, the coming days would be a favorable time to explore and experiment with this approach. I think you will reap wondrous benefits if you slow down and rest in the embrace of a pregnant pause. The mysteries of silence and emptiness will be rich resources.

“I always liked side-paths, little dark back-alleys behind the main road – there one finds adventures and surprises, and precious metal in the dirt.” The character named Dmitri Karamazov makes that statement in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov. And now I’m thinking that you might like to claim his attitude as your own. Just for a while, you understand. Not forever. The magic of the side paths and back-alleys may last for no more than a few weeks, and then gradually fade. But in the meantime, the experiences you uncover there could be fun and educational. I do have one question for you, though: What do you think Dmitri meant by “precious metal in the dirt”? Money? Gold? Jewelry? Was he speaking metaphorically? I’m sure you’ll find out.

“Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason,” says comedian Jerry Seinfeld. His implication is that rejecting traditional strategies and conventional wisdom doesn’t always lead to success. As a professional rebel myself, I find it painful to agree even a little bit with that idea. But I do think it’s applicable to your life right now. For the foreseeable future, compulsive nonconformity is likely to yield mediocrity. Putting too much emphasis on being unique rather than on being right might distract you from the truth. My advice: Stick to the road more traveled.

I expect you to be in a state of constant birth for the next three weeks. Awakening and activation will come naturally. Your drive to blossom and create may be irresistible, bordering on unruly. Does that sound overwhelming? I don’t think it will be a problem as long as you cultivate a mood of amazed amusement about it. (PS, this upsurge is a healthy response to the dissolution that preceded it.)

Expiration dates loom. Fond adieus and last laughs and final hurrahs are on tap. Unfinished business is begging you to give it your smartest attention while there’s still time to finish it with elegance and grace. So here’s my advice for you, my on-the-verge friend: Don’t save any of your tricks, ingenuity, or enthusiasm for later. This is the later you’ve been saving them for. You are more ready than you realize to try what has always seemed improbable or inconceivable before now. Here’s my promise: If you handle these endings with righteous decisiveness, you will ensure bright beginnings in the weeks after your birthday.

A company called Evil Supply sells a satirical poster that contains the following quote: “Be the villain you were born to be. Stop waiting for someone to come along and corrupt you. Succumb to the darkness yourself.” The text in the advertisement for this product adds, “Follow your nightmares... Plot your own nefarious path.” Although this counsel is slightly funny to me, I’m too moral and upright to recommend it to you -- even now, when I think there would be value in you being less nice and polite and agreeable than you usually are. So I’ll tinker with Evil Supply’s message to create more suitable advice: “For the greater good, follow your naughty bliss. Be a leader with a wild imagination. Nudge everyone out of their numbing routines. Sow benevolent mischief that energizes your team.”

“Every time you resist acting on your anger and instead restore yourself to calm, it gets easier,” writes psychologist Laura Markham in Psychology Today. In fact, neurologists claim that by using your willpower in this way, “you’re actually rewiring your brain.” And so the more you practice, the less likely it is that you will be addled by rage in the future. I see the coming weeks as an especially favorable time for you to do this work, Scorpio. Keeping a part of your anger alive is good, of course – sometimes you need its energy to motivate constructive change. But you would benefit from culling the excess.

Much of the action in the world’s novels takes place inside buildings, according to author Robert Bringhurst. But characters in older Russian literature are an exception, he says. They are always out in the forests, traveling and rambling. In accordance with astrological omens, I suggest that you draw inspiration from the Russians’ example in the coming days. As often and as long as you can, put yourself in locations where the sky is overhead. Nature is the preferred setting, but even urban spots are good. Your luck, wisdom, and courage are likely to increase in direct proportion to how much time you spend outdoors.

Has a beloved teacher disappointed you? Are there inspirational figures about whom you feel conflicted because they don’t live up to all of your high standards? Have you become alienated from a person who gave you a blessing but later expressed a flaw you find hard to overlook? Now would be an excellent time to seek healing for rifts like these. Outright forgiveness is one option. You could also work on deepening your appreciation for how complicated and paradoxical everyone is. One more suggestion: Meditate on how your longing for what’s perfect might be an enemy of your ability to benefit from what’s merely good.

French and Italian readers may have no problem with this horoscope. But Americans, Canadians, Brits, and Aussies might be offended, even grossed out. Why? Because my analysis of the astrological omens compels me to conclude that “moist” is a central theme for you right now. And research has shown that many speakers of the English language find the sound of the word “moist” equivalent to hearing fingernails scratching a chalkboard. If you are one of those people, I apologize. But the fact is, you will go astray unless you stay metaphorically moist. You need to cultivate an attitude that is damp but not sodden; dewy but not soggy; sensitive and responsive and lyrical, but not overwrought or weepy or histrionic.

Which signs of the zodiac are the most expert sleepers? Who best appreciates the healing power of slumber and feels the least shame about taking naps? Which of the twelve astrological tribes are most inclined to study the art of snoozing and use their knowledge to get the highest quality renewal from their time in bed? My usual answer to these questions would be Taurus and Cancer, but I’m hoping you Pisceans will vie for the top spot in the coming weeks. It’s a very favorable time for you to increase your mastery of this supreme form of self-care.

Sean Baker’s new film is a must-see Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay Yes, the BC Liberals will not be marching in Vancouver’s annual Pride Parade and we all know why. Every other publication has beaten this story to death and I don’t have anything more to contribute. I have no interest in voicing my opinion because fuck my opinion. I’m not even living in Canada anymore. Instead, I am going to tip you off to the movie of the summer that you all must run and go see the minute you are done waving your rainbow flags. Tangerine is the masterpiece of director Sean Baker. Widely known for his past films about Flatiron District counterfeiters and indebted Chinese delivery men,Tangerine is the story of Alexandra and Sin-Dee, two African American, transgender sex workers living in Los Angeles who discover that Sin-Dee’s boyfriend cheated on her over Christmas Eve.While eating donuts at a dumpy Hollywood spot, Alexandra accidentally spills that Sin-Dee’s boyfriend banged some “white fish” (slang for a cisgender white chick), so the two go on a rampage to find the girl and destroy her. Tangerine was a 2015 Sundance Film Festival selection and has been getting rave reviews from NewYork Times to Buzzfeed to TheVillageVoice. Oh, and the whole movie was filmed on an iPhone. (You heard me.)

Being a straight male, Baker didn’t want to just jump into this story without some clout and understanding of a world he knew very little about. He tried to talk to women on the street, but most thought he was either a John or a cop and stayed away. Eventually, he met up with Mya Taylor (who also stars in the movie as Alexandra) when visiting the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Taylor graciously took to Baker and the idea, enlisting her friend Kitana Kiki Rodriguez to play Sin-Dee.The two women helped Baker shape his story and develop the plot. “I was immediately interested, but I never imagined it would become this,”Taylor said in a recentYouTube interview with The Oral History of Hollywood. Baker told i-D magazine that Taylor gave the film it’s “passport” and schooled the way he treated the entire production. “Mya [Taylor] said, ‘I’ll make this film with you if you promise me two things: one, I want you to go for it in terms of the realism. You need to show how hard it is for the women out here and I don’t want you to shy away from things. But I also want this film to be hilarious because I want this film to be entertainment for the women out here as well.’ It took me several days to think about it, worrying about this balancing act, and then I realized what she was asking me was probably saving me in many ways.” Tangerine could not come along at a more poignant

time, especially when it comes to trans people’s visibility and rights. Fully aware of this now (a year and half post-production), Baker said he experienced the discrimination facing the girls first hand while filming all over Los Angeles. “This is something that these women have to deal with all the time, and I witnessed only a small part of it,” he told i-D. “My hope is that audiences in suburbia USA will connect with the characters of Alexandra and Sin-Dee, and that they then get on their computer and Google and start to learn more. That awareness will hopefully lead to acceptance.” Political progress aside, this movie is hilarious and passionate. It’s raw in the right places, no Hollywood over-dramatic bullshit. Just off-the-cuff, unscripted scenes between two best friends surviving the way they know how. “All men cheat,” Alexandra tells Sin-Dee after breaking the news about her boyfriend. Sin-Dee angrily taps her make-up brush on a glass window, darting her eyes. “Do them just as dirty as they do us. Out here it is all about our hustle… and that is it.” W $ +6!'-5%!- %4 8#6)%!' 61 (6!2%1) +&-615- "/#) *,7 ./'3 , 6!0 *3
