the week ahead Indian Summer Festival India is many things: expansive, crowded, culturally rich, historic, innovative, and (to the outside eye, at least) somewhat complicated. The Indian Summer Festival joyfully explores the many facets of this ancient country through dance and music performances, film screenings, handson workshops, food tastings, and illuminating dialogue. Highlights of this 10-day celebration (July 4-13) include a drool-inducing tasting event curated by culinary guru Vikram Vij; a lively performance by musical group Rajasthan Josh, in which pulsating percussive beats dance with soul-stirring strings; workshops in hip-hop yoga, Bollywood dance and bhangra; a talk by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta (Fire, Earth, Water and Heaven on Earth); an outdoor screening of Little Zizou (from the screenwriter of Mississippi Masala and Salaam Bombay!); discussions on global politics and urban happiness; a cabaret of story-telling, poetry, music and stunning visuals; and much more. The bulk of this Indian feast for the senses will take place at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, with other events unfolding at venues around

By Sabrina Furminger You don’t need to board a plane to tap into the energy, passion and fire that swirls around Latin American culture. In fact, you don’t even need to leave the downtown core. Instead, simply salsa on down to Granville Street on July 6 and 7 for Carnaval del Sol, a free two-day party in which Latin American food, music, dance — and the fiery love for soccer — take centre stage. On the schedule: performances by more than 60 musicians and folkloric dancers on two different stages; multiple food vendors serving up dishes from eight different Latino cuisines; a mini World Cup with teams representing sixteen countries; opportunities to learn zumba and salsa and try out Latin instruments; an outdoor art studio with painters and sculptors demonstrating their skills; a kids’ zone; a meet-and-greet with the Vancouver Whitecaps; and oh so much more. Now in its fifth year, Carnaval del Sol is the brainchild of LatinCouver and a part of Latin American Cultural Week, which kicks off with the Inspirational Latin Awards on July 4. The Carnaval takes over Granville Street between Nelson and Dunsmuir on July 6 and 7. CarnavalDelSol.com. Stephen Wu photo

A hit with critics and audiences alike, this is your invitation to see the most unique wedding of the year. Bollywood Wedding — an elaborate and hilarious, outdoor, interactive dance and theatre event — is back July 1821 and 24-28. Two young Indians are brought together in an arranged marriage. Indian weddings are colourful and extravagant with fabulous clothing, an occasional melt down, some serious drama and dancing. Held outdoors in a beautiful garden setting, the proceedings will begin in the light of the early evening and end with the beautiful setting of the sun, alongside the breathtaking snow-capped mountains of Vancouver. The audience moves from one location to another, taking in various scenes of the play, including the engagement, mehndi, maiyan, milni and of course the wedding itself. The evening will end with a big, interactive dance party at the wedding reception. If you’ve never been to an Indian wedding, this may be your only opportunity to participate! Making the pitch for baseball Andy Dunn can make a Vancouver Canadian fan out of anyone By Martha Perkins

A

ndy Dunn is the perfect Mr. Baseball. More Norman Rockwell than Mark McGwire, the president of the Vancouver Canadians has a charming afternoon-atthe-ballpark personality. He’s even kept enough of his sun-filled southern accent to evoke a Field of Dreams belief that life can’t get much better than sitting in the bleachers at Nat Bailey Stadium. He wants men and women, young and old, neophyte and addict, to to watch a game. He talks as enthusiastically about the $1 A&W root beer floats on Sundays as he does about the team’s league championships. Heck — and he probably would say “heck” —, this is the man who’s introducing yoga classes at baseball games. But as much as he wants everyone to fall in love with baseball as much as he has, don’t think he doesn’t have a highly competitive streak. He just believes that baseball isn’t only about the game. Baseball is nostalgia, a game that lives as much in our collective cultural memory as it does in our present-day lives, whether we are fans or not. Watching a ball game at Nat Bailey Stadium is about families spending time together. It’s about having an affordable and fun outing. It’s about appealing to both the diehard baseball fan who loves that the Canadians are affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays and the person who has never watched a professional game before. “There are tons of reasons to come to the ball park and one of the least of them is to see who wins or loses,” he says. Over a healthy salmon lunch at West on South Granville, he’s surprisingly philosophical both about the game and how he came to be in Vancouver as the head (and partner) of Canada’s only remaining minor league team. “Sports changed my life,” he says. One of four brothers, he’d have had “zero chance of a postgraduate degree” if he hadn’t been offered an ath-

Rob Newell photo letic scholarship. Born in Georgia, where football is a religion, his family moved to Florida when he was five. He played football and baseball as a teenager but, when accepting an athletics scholarship to study sports management at Western Carolina University, opted for the baseball team. “To me, it’s like watching an opera every night,” he says of the game. “I love that there’s so much going on underneath a very quiet, peaceful activity.” By 2008 he’d reached a point in his life — former executive with the Florida Marlins, Montreal Expos and Washington Capitals; Sporting News’ Minor League Executive of the Year and two-time winner of Florida State League Executive of the Year — when he realized success didn’t equal happiness. There were things about major league baseball, and the people involved with it, that he didn’t like. That’s when he was lured to Vancouver by the team’s enthusiastic new owners, Jeff Mooney and Jake Kerr. The Canadians might be a minor league team but they’re in a city with major love for the game and that’s what counts most for Dunn, the

father of three girls who “have made me a better person.” “I want to be with people I like, and trust,” he says. “If you find someplace you have happiness, hang onto it.” Vancouver is that place. And he’s Vancouver’s man when it comes to upping the game on the field and off. As part of his goal to continually break attendance records at the stadium he helped refurbish, Dunn also wants to preserve the glory days of baseball. “Kids should have heroes,” he says. “We want to be your team.” To make sure as many kids as possible get to play as well as watch baseball, the Canadians Baseball Foundation “funds, transports, feeds and uniforms 340 kids [in little league teams at the Nat] and they don’t pay a dime.” Vancouver seems to be returning the love: the Canadians have had only one rained out game in four years.

Straight A’s for Avenue Q Arts Club serves up a summer hit with muppety musical comedy romp By Kelsey Klassen

I

f you go to one musical this summer, make it Avenue Q. (As long as you can handle muppets making jokes about Bjs, racism and Harper.) Libidos are high and self-esteem is low in this R-rated take on Sesame Street. What started as an OffBroadway hit for creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx in 2003, the coming-of-age parable went on to Broadway and London’s West End, raking in awards along the way. Directed by Peter Jorgenson, the Arts Club Theatre production is brought to life by a phenomenal cast using puppets and video projections, the irreverent script skewering the outside world’s optimistic outlook. Avenue Q is 16 letters away from where you want to live. Needles and garbage line the gutters of the ramshackle New York neighbourhood (designed by Jessie award-

winner Marshall McMahen), home to a melting pot of the dissatisfied and disillusioned. Not even the buildings can play it straight in this skeptical environment, but a fresh face in the form of the young puppet Princeton forces his new friends to re-evaluate their purpose in life. Kindergarten teacher Kate has a ‘monster’-sized chip on her shoulder; best friends and roomies Nicky and Rod (borrowing heavily from Ernie and Bert) aren’t exactly on the same page (and have such a realistic relationship that you’ll feel a tug at the heartstrings when one becomes disappointed with the other); and then there’s Trekkie Monster, whose weakness is definitely not cookies. Backed by a discreet four-piece band, standard motivational clichés make way for songs such as “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist”, “It Sucks To Be Me” and “Schadenfreude.” The play’s full puppet nudity (aka puppet porn) has received a lot of press, but that isn’t nearly the highlight of the superlative production. Like the premise of Sesame Street, puppets interact with humans, but in Avenue Q, the actors aren’t hiding off-screen. Rather, they are directly alongside

the puppets they are bringing to life. You’ll find yourself torn with delight over whether to stay trained on the puppet or the person beside it. More than half of the dexterous cast manipulate multiple puppets while belting out the musical numbers and shaking their tail feathers with aplomb. Veteran Vancouver stage presence Scott Bellis embodies three drastically different puppet roles: the one-track minded Trekkie Monster, the sweetly sincere Nicky and the blue Bad Idea Bear (who pops up with his yellow twin to playfully suggest solutions such as suicide and cases of beer for life’s little problems). Kayla Dunbar plays the idealistic Kate Monster and the home-wrecker Lucy with equal measures of sass. Princeton and Rod are energetically played by Andrew MacDonald-Smith in his Vancouver début. And Jeny Cassady gets friendly with the puppets in all the right ways as right-hand gal to many of the actors’ puppeteering needs (she also nails her speaking parts). Round the furry foibles out with flesh-and-blood supporting actors (Shannon Chan-Kent, Evangelia Kambites and Andy Toth) and you have a hit.

Avenue Q, the Tony Award–winning musical about the harsh realities of getting older, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It’s on now until Aug. 3 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage. Emily Cooper photo While it’s unfortunate that people had to be turned away at the box office on the sold-out opening night (June 26), the good

news is the production runs until August 3. Tickets $49-$59 | ArtsClub.com

FlyOver Canada takes off By Kelsey Klassen

A

t the end of a long pier in Vancouver lies a launch pad to the rest of the country. FlyOver Canada, a virtual visitor attraction located at the top of the Canadian Trail at Canada Place, opened this past weekend. And what a fitting Canada Day experience it was for all who took flight. The ride is one of only a handful like it in the world. Divided into three parts, the first is Uplift, an inspirational 10-minute pre-show by Montreal’s Moment Factory (Jay-Z, Cirque) focusing on the diverse cultural communities of Canada. Next comes the pre-flight safety briefing. Finally, you file into the multi-level theatre seating and buckle up. The excited chatter of everyone around you goes silent as the lights go off and the seats quietly glide forward. Riders then experience the exhilarating feeling of soaring from coast to coast, as footage of breathtaking proportions rolls out on the surrounding 20m spherical screen. You’ll want to pull up your feet as tree tops swoop below and wind rushes past your face. You’ll gasp as you drop in on a galloping herd of wild horses and the smell of the Prairies reaches your nose. You might even shriek with delight, depending on your penchant for outbursts, as you summit a mountain range and then glide into the glittering valley below. Location subtitles might help riders orient themselves along the journey (and plan their next vacation), but they were likely eschewed to keep the visuals as immersive and distraction-free as possible. The high-definition footage was shot over four seasons in 2012 by Whistler’s Sherpas Cinema. The ride, intended for ages four and up, is not jarring or scary in the slightest. Instead riders are left breathless from excitement.

Thank you to whoever set up the ‘What/Who do you love installation’ on the empty lot fence at Denman and Nelson. Folks were really getting into it with a lot of wonderful and charming messages. Tourists and locals were even taking pictures! It is too bad that some ass felt that, overnight, he/she should tag all the boards with his/her (Z) tag. Does it stand for ZERO or LOSER? What an eyesore. There are places in Europe which tolerate this tagging crap. I hope that Vancouver does not follow suit. Anonymous

And so was CEO Andrew Strang, who WE caught up with on opening day. Strang and his business partner, Stephen Geddes, had worked in tourism and were looking for an attraction to bring to Vancouver. Inspired on a family vacation by Disney’s Soarin’ Over California, Strang had found the idea they were looking for. The Aquilini Investment Group would help bring the $16-million experience to life. But they still had to find a home for the 30,000-sq.ft. endeavour. And in Vancouver, that can be nigh impossible. “Luckily, literally within the same week that we decided we wanted to do this, we read that the IMAX theatre was going dark

And they indicated in their information that they wanted something ‘inspirationally Canadian,’ so it just made perfect sense,” he beams. Almost three years later, he is standing on the concourse, watching jubilant people walk out of the ride and off into the sunshine. Strang, who has ridden FlyOver at least 25 times now, is bowled over by the reception. “You put your heart and soul into something like this, and today, to see people go through and have emotional reactions like, ‘Geez, I never thought I’d see the Northern Lights...’ or ‘I’d never been to Niagara Falls before!’ and all these wonderful comments, it just makes it all worthwhile. In fact, I’ve seen a couple of faces going through twice today.” And it’s catching imaginations elsewhere as well. “In the last couple of weeks we’ve had interest from essentially all over the world. We’ve got our eyes on a couple of locations in Canada, but we’re now also really expanding our horizons and looking at other places around the world.” Kirsten Lausen and Oliver Engler will certainly be telling people back home in Germany about it. “It was fantastic. I don’t know what to say; there was no favourite because it was all so great.” “I’ve got a favourite part,” interjects Engler. “It was the mountains. Going over the mountains and then into the valley down. It feels like flying.”

Early Music Festival: From oratorios to dance classes By Martha Perkins

ater turning to blood, plagues, floods and the annihilation of an entire army. The newest Hollywood summer blockbuster? No — Handel’s Israel in Egypt, an oratorio first performed in 1739. It will be presented August 7 as part of the Vancouver Early Music Festival. The festival also has its fun side. You know how Darcy turns down an opportunity to dance with Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice? You can learn what he missed out on Aug. 10 when the festival offers Renais-

sance and Baroque dance lessons. Part festival, part learning experience, the summer festival is a mixture of concerts, instrumental and voice master classes, workshops and free lectures to put Early Music in context with other cultural and historic milestones. The summer concert portion of the festival includes: • My Heart’s in the Highlands: Music of Purcell, Ramsay, Burns and Haydn on July 28 • LuteFest 1: Parables of the Silk Road on July 30 • LuteFest 2: Guitar Music by Murcia and Lute Music by Weiss on August 1

Baby boomers driving Lower Mainland downsizing trend The baby boomers have long been the drivers of trends, and as they age they still make a difference. A new report from Colliers International, commissioned by HJ Properties, shows that many of that generation are considering their options regarding downsizing from their family homes. “The research really surprised me,” says Scott Brown, senior vice-president of residential and commercial marketing services at Colliers International Marketing. “I thought there would be a mass exodus to Kelowna, but that’s not happening.”

Instead, people looking to downsize in the Fraser Valley are considering how to stay in their neighbourhood, have money for retirement and help their children, all in one package. Projects such as HJ’s Waterstone in Langley are thus very appealing to downsizers, Brown says. With larger floorplans and plenty of amenities nearby, buyers of all ages are finding something to love about their new home. “Logic starts to win over magic,” Brown says. “People emotionally want to stay in a single-family home, but as the

baby boomers get older, they have different considerations.” One of the largest considerations is security, both of their property and themselves. “Having a neighbour looking out for you is important,” says Brown. “In a multi-family project, you don’t have as many worries.” The report showed that price was the biggest deciding factor for most baby boomers. “You can buy a multi-family home for about $400,000,” Brown says. “That doesn’t get you much in a single-family home.” Brown notes that he did see a difference in how buyers in the Fraser Valley were downsizing versus those in Vancouver itself, adding that Fraser Valley downsizers had retirement higher on their list of priorities. Another big reason the baby boomer generation is buying smaller homes? “I’ve been told that many people are moving into a multifamily home as a defence against their kids moving back in with them,” laughs Brown.

Morningstar home. “They feel more comfortable knowing that someone they know has had a good experience with us,” Calahan says. Partington is perfectly located on Burke Mountain. The neighbourhood has been growing over the years and now includes schools, parks and trails. It is also just a short drive to Coquitlam Town Centre for shopping and dining. You can also find leisure and recreation activities nearby. Sales of Partington will open on July 6 at noon. Interested buyers are encouraged to preregister for more information at www. morningstarhomes.bc.ca. Calahan notes that she’ll send registrants a sneak peek before the start of sales. The sales centre is located at 1508 Dayton Street in Coquitlam. For more information, visit the website or call 604-942-6370.

Partington showcases views on Burke Mountain By Kerry Vital

Morningstar Homes is once again at the top of their game with their latest project, Partington on Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain. “It’s really special up here,” says Deborah Calahan, vice-president of sales and marketing for Morningstar. “The views are pretty spectacular. It’s like being on top of the

world.” Partington is a collection of 45 singlefamily homes with spacious floorplans and luxurious finishings, including a truly massive kitchen with a granite island and tons of counter space. Hardwood flooring is included throughout the living areas, offset by the 19-foot vaulted ceiling, gorgeous floorto-ceiling linear fireplace and huge windows making the most of the views. “Our Partington homes were designed with incredible views in mind by making the windows the focal point of each home,” says Calahan. “We could not pass up the opportunity to show them off.” The four-bedroom homes are available in three different floorplans, ranging from 3,700 to 3,900 square feet. Each comes with an unfinished basement and a large private yard with a patio or deck. “We always strive to be innovative and offer our purchasers the best,” says Calahan.

“We never tire of trying to better our designs, with each new project being given its own consideration.” Partington is Morningstar’s eighth project on Burke Mountain, following the success of Kingston, Avondale, Somerton and many others. “We were the first to pioneer a community on Burke Mountain,” Calahan says. “They really welcomed us with open arms, and it’s now a highly sought-after place to live.” As the community grows, so does Morningstar’s reputation. “The Morningstar promise is to make everything as seamless as possible,” Calahan says. “Buying a house is one of the biggest purchases of your life. We want to make it as stress-free as we can.” She notes that they now get buyers preregistering who have heard about the homes through word-of-mouth from family and friends and who now want to live in their own

Urban Barn designer contest offers $10,000

C

alling all creative competitors! The Vancouver Home + Design Show is on the hunt for the city’s next big name in interior design, thanks to a new partnership with retailer Urban Barn. Flush with $10,000 in prizes, Urban Barn’s Next Top Designer competition will challenge creative hopefuls to throw down in the name of good style, beginning with a Pinterest board that showcases their signature aesthetic. “Our design competitions are always a huge hit at the show, and we’re getting more creative and having more fun with them every year,” said Jill Kivett, show manager for Marketplace Events. “We’re thrilled to partner with Urban Barn in our unique search for undiscovered talent.” Three finalists will be chosen from the Pinterest entries and armed with a $5,000 budget, plus an assigned style and colour revealed by Urban Barn creative director Sébastien Fauteux. From there, each finalist will be tasked with designing the ultimate living room using products sourced exclusively from Urban Barn. The three completed designs will be displayed at the Vancouver Home + Design Show, October 17-20 at BC Place. The living room design receiving the most votes will be showcased at Urban Barn’s flagship South Granville location during the last two weeks of October, with the designer also receiving an exhibitor booth at the 2014 Vancouver Home + Design Show. Entries will be accepted up to Friday, July 19, with finalists chosen throughout the month of August. For more information, visit VancouverHomeAndDesignshow.com.

workers battle traffic in cars By Jeff Nagel

M

etro Vancouverites have Canada’s fourth longest commute to work at an average of 28.4 minutes, according to new data released by Statistics Canada. Maple Ridge workers have it worst, battling traffic for an average of 35.2 minutes, while the commute is as much as 33 minutes in the Tri Cities and 31 minutes in Surrey. downtown The numbers were contained in the voluntary long-form National Household Survey conducted as part of the 2011 Census. The region’s shortest commute was 24.3 minutes in North Vancouver City, where residents spend even less time getting to work than Vancouverites, who average 25.4 minutes. Metro commuters overwhelmingly commuted by private vehicle — 70.7 per cent — but that’s down from 74.4 per cent in 2006. Car pooling remains infrequent, with less than five per cent of commuters saying they were passengers in private vehicles. Public transit use was 19.7 per cent in Metro Vancouver, behind Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa-Gatineau, which had transit usage rates of 20 to 23 per cent. Transit ridership was up from 16.5 per cent reported in 2006. Broken down between travel mode, the findings show Metro commuters spent much longer getting to work if they took public transit — one possible reason why many still prefer to drive. The average transit rider here commuted for 40.9 minutes compared to 26.4 minutes for motorists in private vehicles. Walkers averaged a 14.4-minute stroll to work while cyclists biked on average 23.8 minutes. TransLink hopes to eventually whittle the share of car trips in the region down to 50 per cent, while increasing the number of

people who take transit, cycle or walk. TransLink spokesman Derek Zabel said the Statistics Canada findings are consistent with TransLink data, particularly on the growth of public transit. “We are increasing our ridership,” he said. “We have seen an 84 per cent increase over the last decade, equal to 109 million more transit trips.” Transit trips also increased in the last year, he said, through more efficient use of existing resources, with no extra injection of money. Despite a huge push to add bike lanes, particularly in Vancouver, there’s little sign of cycling getting out of first gear as a way of getting to work. Just 4.4 per cent pedalled to work in Vancouver, while cyclists made up just two per cent of commuters in North Vancouver, 1.3 per cent in flat Richmond and less than one per cent in most of the rest of the region. The car remains king in the AbbotsfordMission area, where 92.2 per cent of workers commuted by private vehicles, just 2.5 per cent used public transit, 2.6 per cent walked and 0.8 per cent biked. The survey also found the City of Vancouver was the workplace of 36.1 per cent of commuters from Burnaby and 13.1 per cent of commuters living in Surrey. Eight per cent of BC residents worked at home rather than at an outside workplace. BY THE NUMBERS Vancouver – 25.4 minute average commute; transit use 30 % North Vancouver City – 24.3 minute average commute; transit use 22.8 % Burnaby – 29.1 minute average commute; transit use 28.1 % Richmond – 25.9 minute average commute; transit use 18 % Coquitlam – 31.8 minute average commute; transit use 17.1 per cent. Maple Ridge – 35.2 minute average commute; transit use 9.5 % Surrey – 31 minute average commute; transit use 12.8 % Langley Township – 29 minute average commute; 3.5 % transit use

Sexual health and adventure begins at Honey Let’s face it. Even though it might not be warranted, adult toy stores don’t have the best reputation. Shops such as the upscale Honey Gifts are beginning to change that. “We offer better quality and a better environment in a better part of town,” says Honey Gifts founder and owner Karyee Yip. “Our goal is to make people comfortable when they’re shopping here.” Founded 11 years ago, Karyee opened Honey Gifts providing a comfortable environment for those shopping for adult toys, designer brand lingerie and boudoir items. The interest from customers has been so high, they opened a second location in Gastown in June. “There was nothing around that had a really nice boutique environment for women to shop for lingerie and toys,” she says. “There wasn’t really a place that wasn’t seedy and intimidating.” Without intimidation or pretension, Honey Gifts focuses on providing comfortable service to its customers, having knowledgeable, approachable staff on hand to answer any question. Karyee says that with pop culture successes such as 50 Shades of Grey, the industry is no longer taboo. “It’s become much more

ummer is here, which means time for some outdoor dining. While many are lounging at patios, others are getting their cardio by finding the city’s food carts. Street food is about convenience, but some of Vancouver’s street food is worth setting time aside and seeking out. I’ve tried almost all the food carts in the city by now, and I’m proud to see how diverse the options are. The focus on local and sustainable ingredients and environmentally friendly initiatives is high, and they set a fantastic example for other cities to follow. Despite food trucks being so “last year”, the street food scene in Vancouver is vibrant with a loyal following of street food fans. Vancouver’s Food Cart Fest, presented by Arrival and The Streetfood Vancouver Society, is every Sunday from 12-5pm until September 22. More than 20 of Vancouver’s favourite food carts come together at 215 W. 1st (between the Cambie Street Bridge and Olympic Village). Along with food carts and trucks, there is live music, DJs, community markets, and entertainment for the whole family. Admission is $2; children under 13 are free. While all the trucks have something unique to offer, here are 10 of my favourites from Vancouver’s Food Cart Fest, listed in no particular order. This is not a “Top 10” or “Best Of” list (I wrote previously on how I feel about those). These are simply things I like a lot and recommend. You have 12 Sundays to try them all. 1) Sweet & Spicy Chicken Karaage at Mogu Japanese Street Eats. Don’t underestimate it — this is no ordinary Chicken Karaage. This truck is under rated and their karaage is highly addictive. 2) Chicken and Waffles at Yolk’s. This truck serves upscale restaurant-quality breakfast without the price. It’s properly executed food and it’s one of my favourites overall.

3) Tuna Ta Taco at TacoFino. This is another truck pretty much getting everything right. This West Coast-style taco features lightly seared sesame-soy albacore tuna, wasabi-ginger mayo, shredded cabbage, mango salsa and seaweed salad on a fire-toasted flour tortilla. 4) Korean Breakfast Burrito at Roaming Dragon. It’s scrambled eggs, bell peppers, spinach, mozzarella cheese, salsa, Asian guacamole and Korean BBQ sauce. 5) Marghertia at Pazzarella. This is Canada’s first wood-fired pizza truck and it is rather authentic to Neapolitan standards, too. The dough is made from 100 per cent Caputo 00 flour and the crust is foldable with a charred aroma all round. 6) The Market Bowl at JJ’s Trucketeria. It’s a hearty vegetarian and vegan stew of market-fresh veggies on brown rice. The sauce is made from chickpeas and almonds and, for a truck focused on mainly meats, I was impressed! 7) The Breakfast Porker from Pig on the Street. It’s double-smoked bacon, sage and apple sausage stuffing, home made chutney, goat Gouda, house-made caramelized onion mayo, avocado, fried eggs, greens, and Krissy’s house-made hot sauce all wrapped up in their handmade flatbread. 8) Kiss Ass Rice with Braised Pork Belly at Le Tigre. It’s melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with a sous vide egg and seven-spice mayo. 9) The Jerk Chicken Roti at The Reef Runner, which is one of Vancouver’s newest food trucks. It’s an extension of The Reef restaurants and they make the roti fresh upon order. The Jerk Chicken poutine is also a hit. 10) Mom’s Meatloaf Grilled Cheese at Mom’s Grilled Cheese. I know it’s just a grilled cheese, but it’s a pretty impressive grilled cheese. The first-ever We Heart Local Awards started July 1, and there’s a category for ‘‘Favourite Local Food Truck’’. I strongly encourage people to try as many trucks as possible before voting. Don’t just vote for the most popular. Nominations are open from July 1 to 15 and voting is from July 16 to August 5. To nominate someone, and to vote later, go to BuyLocalEatNatural.com. Find Mijune at the grand opening of Miku Restaurant’s relocation to Waterfront (200 Granville Street) on July 4. Blind (wine) ambition You never know what you’re going to drink at the Undercover fundraiser — the fun is in the guessing

So what happens when I get to tear around a room tasting wines without knowing what they are? I find a few new favourites, too! Here are a couple of them:

Synchromesh 2012 ‘Thorny Vines’ Riesling | Okanagan Valley, BC | $19-23 | Winery Direct/Private Stores There’s been a buzz around town about Okanagan Falls’ Synchromesh Wines, and what a pleasure it was to finally give them a whirl and find them to be totally worthy! The best part is that I wasn’t influenced by that buzz as I enjoyed lifted aromatics of lime, green apple and jasmine, followed by orange marmalade and lemonade on the palate. It’s juicy, but still finishes dry. Yet another fantastic BC Riesling to add to my evergrowing list of favourites!

ast week I had the pleasure of hosting Undercover, a fundraiser for the Shooting Stars Foundation which provides support to local HIV/AIDS organizations. It’s one of my absolutely favourite events of the year and the premise is simple. It’s a walk-around, festival-style tasting, similar to the Vancouver International Wine Festival. But here’s the kicker: all 80 wines in the room were covered in brown bags, poured completely blind to the 350 guests in attendance. Yup, you approach any table and the only thing you get to know is if the wine is white, pink, red or sparkling (there’s something to be said for the obvious here), and the agents pouring are permitted to share if the wines are Old World (European) or New World. Attendees are given programs with number that correspond to the wines poured, and are encouraged to score and make notes on favourites. About a half hour before the events wrap up, all wines are uncovered and you get to buzz around, discovering what your new favourites are, which usually entails a few surprises! I like the concept for a few reasons, not least of which is that it’s so much fun. The other thing is that your subconscious can’t muddle your perception based on brands, grapes or countries you assume to like or dislike. It’s wine tasting without a net, just pure opinion based on sight, aroma and taste. When you’re getting together with a bunch of people this summer; I highly recommend you try your own home version of the idea. You’d be surprised how enjoyable it can be when you don’t know what you’re drinking, and it’s extra fun when your friend who claims to hate Riesling chooses one as their favourite.

Peter & Peter 2009 Pinot Noir | Pfalz, Germany | $18.99 | BC Liquor Stores What a pleasant and delicate little Pinot Noir! Definitely on the lighter side of red, chill this one up a bit and enjoy raspberries, cherries, a stony minerality with a couple flecks of fresh herbs. That little bit of age on it brings nuances of cola and sarsaparilla. I’m thinking hamburgers or hot dogs, and topping up my glass often.

WATERFRONT DINING AT ITS BEST

Types of sake Wine is naturally fermented by adding yeast to pressed grapes. Sake is not fermented by adding yeast to rice but by using koji, which converts the starch in rice to sugar. The rice begins fermenting once the yeast is added to this sugar. — The Japan Sake Brewers Association Ginjoshu: Uses white rice which has been milled so that 60 per cent or less of the grain remains. Also contains rice koji and water; may contain brewing alcohol. Fruity, somewhat floral bouquet. If rice is polished down to 50 per cent, it’s Dai-ginjoshu. Junaishu: Made only from white rice, rice koji and water. Mellow bouquet; rich, smooth flavour.

Everywhere in the community UsedVancouver a family-friendly, localized online classified site that even comes with angels By Gen Handley

L

ong before she became the marketing director for UsedEverywhere.com, Lacey Sheardown was a borderline-obsessive user of the classifieds site. “I was always on there — I was an avid user, she says with a laugh. Her Victoria home is filled with furniture and other unique items she bought or found for free on UsedEverywhere. “So when I got this job, my friends were like, ‘Yeah, that makes sense.’ But what drew Sheardown to the site was more than the satisfaction of treasure hunting. Unlike other classifieds sites out there, this was a place where she could look for a new coffee table without stumbling across an ad for a casual no-stringsattached encounter at the local park. “We’re actually family friendly, she says. Across more than 80 cities and towns, the site has a real, live monitoring team, checking ads every hour of the day, ensuring quality content and dependable transactions. “Your kid can surf our site and you can be comfortable with it. UsedEverywhere.com is now owned by Black Press. It has as many unique visitors in Canada as Craig’sList and is the number one free classified site in Ottawa, Victoria and PEI. The site includes an informative blog and Facebook page. As much as the site is about buying and selling, it’s also about connecting people, building community, on and off-line, with a flesh-and-blood UsedEverywhere community coordinator working locally. Following the flooding in Alberta, the site encouraged Albertans to donate items for flood victims on its four sites in the province: UsedCalgary. com, UsedRedDeer.com, UsedCentralAlberta.com and UsedEdmonton.com. In Vancouver, you might find the community coordinator at the farmer’s markets or most recently at the Vancouver Children’s Festival where UsedEverywhere was a major sponsor. They are also involved with projects such as a car and booster seat recycling program that took place last month (they recycled 83 expired seats) as well as a new initiative in the next month to work with local business, allowing them to advertise on the site

and connect with buyers. The community coordinators even look for personal opportunities to help locally through the Angels program. Last year, for instance, they helped a Vancouver woman undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer by finding breast milk for her baby. Sheardown says community involvement is a big component of the company’s DNA. “It’s a social responsibility, she says. “Our site is about reusing, reducing and recycling and so being a part of the community and helping in other ways is connected that.

Even though the site has been embraced mostly by professional mothers like Sheardown, she says it appeals to other demographics as well. So what’s the coolest thing she got on UsedEverywhere? It’s a large stereo cabinet that was brought over from Europe after the Second World War. “They had the clothes on their backs, 20 bucks and this giant, enormous stereo cabinet. And we got it for free! It’s the bonus of hearing a story or meeting new people that Sheardown appreciates about using the site.

“There’s always history with the item or you meet an interesting person, she says. Go to UsedVancouver.com to find just what you’re looking for or list an item to give away or sell. Lone Ranger gets lost in Western excess

Movie Reviews

Female buddy flick squanders potential THE HEAT

Starring Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy Directed by Paul Feig Becoming typecast is one of the many pitfalls Hollywood actors attempt to avoid and the two leads in Paul Feig’s buddy comedy, The Heat, tread dangerously close to stereotypical territory. Sandra Bullock plays the conservative, tightly wound FBI agent who is paired up with Melissa McCarthy’s crass and volatile Boston cop and, although the idea sounds good on paper, the results are astonishingly tepid. When the two put their difference aside and come together to take down a ruthless drug lord they soon find a predictable friendship is brewing. The movie’s script, from newcomer Katie Dippold, is full of rude and offensive jokes but short on real wit and nuance, something Feig’s

THE LONE RANGER

previous effort Bridesmaids was able to pull off so effectively. Instead, we are left with a meanspirited, aggressively violent and clichéd jumble of skits that fit together awkwardly into a full length film. The other unsettling aspect of the movie’s comedic elements is the physical comedy McCarthy is forced to endure at the expense of her weight, the results are beyond unflattering. The Heat boasts some strong supporting Thor players: Oscar nominee Demian BiDiakow chir, who does little more that scowl; Jane Curtin, who is reduced to one-liners; and the once great Michael Rapaport, whose talents are hidden beneath a paper thin character. Perhaps the film would have worked better if Bullock and McCarthy’s roles were reversed; at least is would offer some modicum of surprise; sadly the final product is as forgettable and stale as the film’s generic title.

Starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer Directed by Gore Verbinski Apparently convinced that no one was going to take The Lone Ranger seriously in this day and age, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski (the men behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) decided they weren’t obligated to either. With the exaggerated performances and over-the-top action, there’s often the sense that Verbinski is trying to create a live-action cartoon. (He’s already directed one legitimate animated Western: 2011’s wildly entertaining Rango.) And while the classic “William Tell Overture” theme music certainly lends itself well to these antic aspirations — Looney Tunes’ Bugs Bunny Rides Again employed the same composition — the inclusion of sequences that see a Comanche tribe mowed down by a Gatling gun reduce the movie to a tonal nightmare. Furthermore, the running time seems to have ballooned to two-and-a-half

hours purely because no one had a clear concept of exactly what they hoped to achieve here. The one thing they do seem set on is that they aren’t particularly comfortable having The Lone Ranger (played with a blend of self-deprecation and square-jawed swagger by Armie Hammer) feature too prominently in a film bearing his name. Consequently, Tonto is elevated from noble sidekick to clowning costar, allowing another opportunity to admire how Johnny Depp continues to convince both audiences and the suits cutting the cheques that mugging + makeup = acting. There is, of course, an overlyconvoluted storyline here concerning the outlaw Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner). There’s also the odd moment that dazzles. However, the movie’s highlights are eclipsed by its unseemly excess. All told, it’s too much of a not particularly good thing. — Curtis Woloschuk

PNE _ PLAYLAND

Starring Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces Directed by Pedro Almodóvar Whereas 2011’s sinister and subversive The Skin I Live In saw Spanish provocateur Pedro Almodóvar putting his perverse twist on the classic mad scientist tale, this farcical follow-up largely amounts to his version of Airplane! for the art house set. While it’s apparent that the screwball comedy here is intended to satirize the scandalous state of affairs in Spain, I’m So Excited! is too burdened by broad camp and dull quirk to ever really get off the ground. In a clever set-up that establishes the entitled/ encumbered divide between the film’s characters, it’s a pair of glamourous superstars who make life miserable for a trio of working stiffs. Preoccupied with their own ongoing soap opera, two ground crew staff (Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz) inadvertently damage an aircraft’s landing gear right before takeoff. With the problem only detected once airborne and an emergency landing required, the flight attendants — Joserra (Javier Cámara), Ulloa (Raúl Arévalo) and Fajas (Carlos Areces) — are charged with keeping the passengers distracted. Of course, airlines’ time-honoured class system ensures unequal treatment. While the commoners in coach are unceremoniously knocked out, the affluent eccentrics in first class drink and drug in excess, spilling their tabloid-worthy backstories in the process. However, when you find yourself focusing on how the aesthetics of a commercial aircraft lend themselves well to Almodóvar’s fetishistic touch, it’s safe to say that these lurid secrets are failing to fascinate. Ultimately, I’m So Excited! is the equivalent of being stuck on a transatlantic flight next to someone’s who’s not nearly as funny as he fancies himself to be. — Curtis Woloschuk

SAY ‘JELLIES!’ For creatures without faces, jellies sure are photogenic. To celebrate their captivating looks, this summer, Vancouver Aquarium visitors have even more reasons to snap photos of these beautiful creatures at the new Jelly Invasion exhibit. Guests can showcase their best jelly photos for a chance to win the grand prize of an open-water Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certification scuba course with the Edge Diving Centre and a DX-GE5 12 MP Sea & Sea waterproof camera and housing set from Oceaner. To enter, people are invited to visit Vancouver Aquarium on Facebook and look for the Jelly Invasion Photo Contest app to share their photos. The contest until September 2.

Weekly Pride Profile

THE EMPRESS OF CANADA In 1958, a man stood on the steps of the Vancouver Courthouse protesting the lack of equality in Canada for gays and lesbians - and not one person stopped to hear him speak. That man then did something that, in those days, shocked people to their core.

3

He put on a dress. On August 15, 1958 a pioneer of our LGBTQ community in Canada took a stand for all, and for the first time people stopped and listened to him. He had a voice.

6

5

He used that voice to start the letter-writing campaign that brought him friendships with Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Tommy Douglas, and resulted in the decriminalization of homosexuality. In the 55 years that have followed, ted northe has organized and sponsored the first Pride March in Canada (1963); created the oldest continuously-running LGBTQ organization in Canada, the Courts of Canada (1964); started the first Gay Businessman’s guild (1970); the first gay sports league in Canada

(1974); and co-founded the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society (1975), the first LGBT First Nations Group in the country, and numerous other programs. A thorn in the side of modern society, Mr. northe was accused of propagating the “gay agenda” through his supposed “gay mafia” - dubbed “ted northe and his lavender hill mob” by the Vancouver Sun and Province in 1970. Mr. northe has held the title of Empress of Canada for 50 years, and is the only currently reigning empress of Mexico (Ensenada). In 1996, Mr.northe signed an accord with the courts of the United States, creating an International Court System. In his lifetime northe has been a leader in the fight against the AIDS Epidemic in the 1980s and has dedicated himself wholly to the advancement of rights for the LGBT community. He has been a driving force in defining the modern LGBT Community and Human Rights Movement in Canada as we know it today.

Free Will Astrology #Z 3PC #SF[TOZ r Week of July 4 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): In The Fisher King and the Handless Maiden, Robert Johnson says many of us are in debt with our psychic energy. We work too hard. We rarely refresh ourselves with silence and slowness and peace. We don’t get enough sleep or good food or exposure to nature. “It is genius to store energy,” he says. He recommends creating a plan to save it up so that you always have more than enough to draw on. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to make this a habit, Aries. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): As your destiny unfolds, you go through phases when you have fewer good ideas than average, and other phases when you’re overflowing with them. The period you’re in right now is one of the latter. You are a fountain of bright notions, intuitive insights, and fresh perspectives. Take advantage of the abundance. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): No one knows why long-distance runners sometimes get a “second wind.” It allows athletes to resume their peak efforts after seemingly having reached a point of exhaustion. A metaphorical version of this happy event will occur for you sometime soon, Gemini.

OBITUARIES

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Thomas Gray was

a renowned 18th-century English poet best remembered for his “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.” It took him seven years to write, or an average of 12 words per month. I suspect that you are embarking on a labour of love that will evolve at a gradual pace, too, Cancerian. This is a characterbuilding, life-defining project that can’t and shouldn’t be rushed. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): The German philosopher Georg Christoph Lichtenberg wrote, “The ‘second sight’ possessed by the Highlanders in Scotland is actually a foreknowledge of future events. I believe they possess this gift because they don’t wear trousers. That is also why women are more prone to utter prophecies.” In the coming weeks you’re likely to catch glimpses of what’s to come — especially when you’re not wearing pants. VIRGO AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Were you nurtured by caring adults in the first year of your life? If so, I bet you now have the capacity to fix whatever’s ailing your tribe or posse. You could offer some inspiration that will renew everyone’s motivation to work together. And what if you were NOT given an abundance of tender love? I think you will still have the power to raise your crew’s mood, but you may end up kicking butts along the way. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Naturalist Henry David Thoreau said “I learned that if one

A group of biologists has proposed to repopulate the western part of the continent with similar species. They call it“re-wilding.” Cosmic forces will be on your side if you reinvigorate your connection to the raw, primal aspects of both your own nature and the great outdoors. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): Alexander Pushkin’s abundant creativity was undoubtedly related to his unruly libido. By the time he was 31 years old, he’d had 112 lovers. But then he met his ultimate muse, the lovely and intelligent Natalya Goncharova, to whom he remained faithful. I half-expect something comparable to happen for you in the next 10 months, Sagittarius. You may either find an unparalleled ally or else finally ripen your relationship with an unparalleled

ally you’ve known for a while. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): It’s Grease Week, when you need to make sure everything is as well-oiled as possible. Does your car need a quart of Castrol? Is it time to bring more extra virgin olive oil into your kitchen? Do you have any K-Y Jelly in your nightstand? Be liberal with the lubrication — both literally and metaphorically. You need smooth procedures & natural transitions. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Two years into the War of 1812, British soldiers invaded Washington, DC and set fire to the White House. The flames raged out of control. In the nick of time, a fierce storm hit, producing a tornado and heavy rains. Battered by the weather, the British army retreated. The capital was saved. I predict that you will soon be the beneficiary of a somewhat less dramatic example of this series of events. Give thanks for the “lucky storm.” PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): Like the legendary Most Interesting Man in the World who shills for Dos Equis beer, you will never step in gum on the sidewalk or lose a sock in the coming weeks.
