VanDusen exhibit plants the idea of trees’ importance By Martha Perkins

M

artha Varcoe Sturdy is standing amidst the towering, blackened cedar logs that will greet visitors to the VanDusen Botanical Garden until September 30. There’s a look of love and awe on her face. Her hand reaches out to caress the logs, to marvel anew at their beauty. This installation — part of the new Touch Wood exhibit — is not about death. It’s about life. It’s about the trees that took nourishment from the ground and energy from the sun to grow and thrive on her property near Pemberton. The trees weathered storms and droughts. Their branches were nibbled on by deer and provided protection to birds. Sturdy could not imagine taking a chainsaw to them. “I want to use the wood as it is, to let it talk to me rather than superimpose the new world on it,” she says in an interview on the exhibit’s opening night. “I’m looking and thinking and playing with wood to make it be what it is…. It’s important to reflect on what the tree’s been to you. On my farm, the trees fall down, they’re dead. It takes a long time to rot.” Instead, she burnt the logs to expose their grain and texture so that the trees could tell their story of a life well and fully lived. At 71, Sturdy is adamant that she too will live life fully, taking everything it gives her and turning it into creative inspiration. She graduated from Emily Carr college as a sculptor but rose to fame as a designer of jewelry and home decor. Four years ago she decided to return to sculpting (and added her maiden name as a sculptor) but didn’t think about working with wood until she had a conversation with Brent Comber, who also contributes to the

Touch Wood exhibit. “Life is your adventure,” she says. “I am not, at 71, to go, ‘Oh, I should slow down.’ Instead, it’s ‘Oh, another page. Let’s go!’” The exhibit was curated by Celia Duthie and Nicholas Hunt of the Duthie Gallery on Salt Spring Island (and, formerly, Duthie’s Bookstores.) “We wanted pieces that would grace a gracious garden and yet have enough oomph to make people notice them,” Duthie told WE Vancouver. Well aware that people can have strong opinions on public art, and that the garden’s main focus is, well, the gardens, they carefully sought pieces that complemented the space. “People can be really antagonized or irritated or baffled by public art,” Duthie says. Even though many artists feel there’s an imperative to “put things out that are edgy,” the artists in this show are more consumed by expressions of beauty. “We want people to like the art.” Sturdy agrees. “A lot of art is ‘Up you, I’m pissed off, I’m angry.’ Slow down and look at this little microcosm of wood. You get a sense of peace and resolve.” Another major concern was making sure the pieces didn’t interfere with the garden’s maintenance. “We were really careful to keep the head gardener happy,” Duthie says with a smile. Participating artists are Michael Dennis, Martha Varcoe Sturdy, Judson Beaumont, Marie Khouri, Richard Tetrault, Brent Comber, Peter Pierobon, Nathan Lee and Trevor Coghill, Steve Paterson, Paul Burke, Alistair Heseltine, Urs-P Twellmann, Janice Woode, Chris Booth and Michael Robb. Each piece is for sale and Duthie says there’s also a hope that a donor or donors would buy pieces to stay at the VanDusen. For details go to VanDusenGarden.org.

“It’s important to reflect on what the tree’s been to you,” says Martha Varcoe Sturdy whose piece, “Reflections”, is part of the new Touch Wood exhibit at VanDusen Botanical Garden. Martha Perkins photo

hile working for a year in Singapore, Roham Sheikholeslami began to notice the popularity of Quick Response (QR) codes around the Southeast

Asian country. The marketing trend he noticed was interesting, but his aesthetic eye spotted something more in the squares of matrix barcode. “I saw an opportunity to combine design and art with technology,” says Sheikholeslami, co-founder and CEO of Muprime Technologies. “By default, they have fairly unattractive look. You can actually do some much with them without affecting the functionality and make them much more beautiful.” Most of you have probably seen the cryptic QR codes dotting ads and buses around the city. These codes, when scanned by your smartphone, take you online to a company website or page. Muprime takes the technical, abstruse look of a QR code and redesigns it into a functional and attractive tool for marketing, embedding a logo or message into the design. They currently have more than 1,200 customers using the unique medium, including the Vancouver Sun and Davis LLP. If you scan the QR code that’s part of this week’s WE Vancouver cover design, it will take you to an online version of the story on page 7, all thanks to Muprime. “We’re making them more attractive as an ad-

vertising vehicle,” explains Sheikholeslami, who has a background in architecture and interactive design, “but what’s more important is that it’s a whole package for a mobile marketing campaign. “We want to connect Sheikholeslami anything from offline materials to online content,” he continues. “That’s basically our mission and QR codes are the most popular medium for that right now.” Sheikholeslami says customized QR codes are the focus now, but they will be expanding to near field communication and augmented reality technologies in the future. This summer, Muprime’s reinventing the traditional, linear community event by integrating mobile technology into the public-space experience. It will showcase downtown Vancouver by creating VIVA Treasure, an outdoor interactive QR code game, to engage pedestrians on Granville Street. ‘Mu’ means mysterious and ‘prime’ means original; so the basic translation could be interpreted as ‘the originator of something really cool.’ “I’m a huge Apple fanboy,” he says with a small laugh. “I look out for those small details that unconsciously have a huge effect on people — Apple showed me that.” The Iran-native moved his family to Vancouver in 2006 for a better life and says he’s thankful every day that he did. “I love it here. The city, the people are wonderful and I’m really happy that I could start the company here.”

ever one to rest, let alone sleep, it’s no wonder Granville Street has seen so much. And to learn the many secrets hidden under decades of plaster and paint, Forbidden Vancouver has launched a brand new walking tour: The Granville Street Reveal. On this 90-minute tour, the curtains are thrown open on Vancouver’s historic entertainment district, focusing on the evolution of entertainment on Granville Street. Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers and Fred Astaire all cut their teeth here as young vaudeville stars. But by the early 1930s Granville Street had totally re-invented itself as Theatre Row. For the next 30 years, 10 giant movie theatres, resplendent with 20-foot neon signs, drew thou-

sand-upon-thousand every week to catch the latest blockbusters. In the ‘70s Granville Street evolved again. Thanks to some of the most liberal public decency laws in North America, stripclubs boomed. More than 40 existed in downtown Vancouver, centred around the Granville Street district. And today Granville is still home to some of North America’s greatest live music venues, like the Commodore Ballroom and the Orpheum. Featuring countless acts every year, the street is a celebrated starting point for many musicians and bands as they tour North America. Tours run at 11am every Wed., Sat. and Sun. from June 22, all summer. Tickets are $19/$22 plus GST and can be booked online at ForbiddenVancouver.ca.

O

ne hundred and forty-five years after Lord Granville was appointed Colonial Secretary to manage the British Empire’s colonies, including the area known as Vancouver, I highly doubt that he could have predicted the many associations that his name would have in a metropolitan coastal city — especially for an area known for its gritty, colourful clubs and shops. And to have Granville posthumously scratching his head even more, VIVA Vancouver is reprogramming the way Granville Street is used, allowing visitors think outside the sidewalk’s borders and look at new ways of exploring the physical area. VIVA Vancouver is an every-weekend event that runs until the end of August, blocking off Granville Street and other major areas such as Robson, Fraser and Mt. Pleasant from cars, providing new spaces for people to socialize, eat and play by incorporating festivals and events and adding chairs, tables and areas to hang out. For example, by June 29, 800 Robson will be transformed into Corduroy Road, with a bright, deck-like appearance, bringing a section of the roadway up to curb level with seating for people to pause, relax and take in the city. The installation’s name, Corduroy Road, refers to rough-cut plank and log roads once used as temporary passages in the Pacific Northwest (and as bumpy as a pair of corduroy pants). You can also celebrate the Canada Day long weekend with the Vancouver Busker Festival, taking place on Granville Street from June 29 to July 1. “The objective is to really encourage people to come out and take over road space and enjoy it in a different way,” says Charles Gauthier, president and CEO of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, one of the major partners which also include the City, TransLink, local business and artists. “We want to animate the streets, allowing festivals and artists and Vancouverites to interact.” Bus routes along Granville and Robson streets will be rerouted nearby for the duration of both closures. Now in its fourth year, VIVA Vancouver has made it comfortable to walk down the middle of a normally

busy street. “You could tell Vancouverites were kind of curious and not sure how to adapt to this new model,” Gauthier says with a small laugh. “So it was interesting to see reactions like, ‘What do you mean, I can sit in the middle of this street on tables and chairs?’” Comparably, the businesses in the area were also a little skeptical of the car-less proposal. “In the early days, it took a lot of convincing for the merchants that this was going to pay dividends for them,” Gauthier says. “We showed them that just because there are no motorized vehicles on the street, it doesn’t mean you won’t get business at your door.” A survey was conducted last year showing that VIVA actually promotes business in the area: six out of 10 of people who come down to the event spend at least two hours on the strip, visiting the shops in the area. But the real shift, according to Gauthier, is in the mindset of Vancouverites. “We don’t really know our neighbours well enough,” he says. “We’re not connected with each other. I think what events like this will do is start connecting people and maybe start breaking down those barriers that we have — that we don’t talk to strangers or we don’t share a bench with someone. “ “I think that, over time, we’ll see people becoming friendlier to each other and those barriers will come down where we will engage and talk to people and maybe make new friends as a result.”

Metro takes hard look at salaries By Jeff Nagel

M

etro Vancouver is conducting an extensive review of salaries for all management staff to determine if their pay levels are appropriate. It comes as the regional district released annual financial disclosures showing it paid out $142 million in pay and benefits to employees last year. Metro paid 369 employees more than $100,000 last year. Chief administrative officer Carol Mason has ordered a freeze on new hiring until the review is complete. A finding that pay levels are too high and need to be decreased would be “very difficult” to apply to current staff who would likely be grandfathered, said Metro board chair Greg Moore. In the past BC Hydro has poached

many Metro engineers, putting upward pressure on those salaries to stay competitive. Local cities are also routinely raiding staff from each other or from Metro. The financial disclosures show last year’s highest payout of $523,000 went to retired policy and planning manager Toivo Allas, but included an unusual payout of banked holiday time accrued over four decades. Mason, who took over as CAO last fall after longtime CAO Johnny Carline retired, earns $270,000 a year. Deputy CAO Delia Laglagaron’s remuneration of $311,000 was unusually high because she was performing extra duties as acting CAO for most of the year. The highest paid managers at Metro are water services general manager Tim Jervis at $218,000; external relations director Heather Schoemaker at $208,000; corporate services general manager Ralph

Hildebrand at $196,000; liquid waste services general manager Simon Ho at $185,000; and acting chief financial officer Phil Trotzuk at $173,000. There’s been a major turnover in management in the past year. Besides Carline, former chief financial officer Jim Rusnak and planning, parks and environment manager Gaetan Royer both left as part of administrative restructuring. Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation B.C. director Jordan Bateman said Metro’s pay grid looks too high, noting CAO Mason makes more than provincial deputy ministers, who earn around $230,000. He said Metro has “grown out of control” over the years, adding social housing and culture offerings that go well beyond the regional district’s core mandate of dealing with drinking water, sewage, garbage and perhaps regional parks.

Manager pay raises topple health authority’s CEO By Jeff Nagel

L

ynda Cranston has resigned as president and CEO of the Provincial Health Services Authority after management pay raises were approved without the board’s consent or knowledge. The three per cent wage hikes for 118 managers at PHSA in late May contravened a provincial government order last fall to freeze public sector management salaries. The PHSA runs BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital, the BC Cancer Agency and various other specialty or provincial services, such as the BC Ambulance Service, BC Transplant, the BC Centre for Disease Control, and BC Mental Health and Addiction Services. The PHSA board is reviewing its legal options to reverse the pay hikes, which add $621,000 in annual payroll costs to the authority’s $2.5-billion budget. Health Minister Terry Lake said finite health dollars go to front-line care during difficult economic times. PHSA board chair Wynne Powell said the board will implement measures to ensure the violation is never repeated.

past. Besides being very experienced, he made us feel like we were a true priority to him. He proved to be accountable and trustworthy, and really guided us through the process of selling. Scott believed in the list price he recommended, and encouraged us to remain patient in this market. We sold for over our asking price and are thrilled with the way things turned out.”

Shine lights up Main St. New condo development showcases local art

O

n the corner of Scotia and 6th, in the heart of Main Street’s arts community, Shine is an upcoming 90-home concrete development that plans to truly engage local artists. Developer Payam Imani will purchase three pieces of art from Main Street artists to showcase in the building. Artists include John Ferrie, whose whimsical paintings have made him famous around the world.

12

June 27 – July 3, 2013

Ferrie, who lives a block from Shine, says “Payam is genuinely interested in supporting local artists and maintaining the vibe of this neighborhood, which includes a lot of artists.” The building will bring to life a block, just off Main Street, that is home to The Whip café and several popular boutiques. On its second floor, SHINE will feature a podium courtyard with a creative and cool amenity area, including a pop-up outdoor movie theatre, fire pits, outdoor kitchen and loungers. Architecturally, exteriors will incorporate the old industrial feel of the neighborhood by using

a combination of glass, metal, cement and wood. The homes vary from one to three bedrooms and pricing starts in the mid-$200,000’s. There is something for everyone at Shine, with smaller homes for first-time homebuyers and larger homes up to 1,800 square feet with private outdoor space. In addition to the second floor amenity area, there’s also a 1,200-square-foot public space on the 6th floor featuring a garden and lounge area with great views of the mountains and downtown Vancouver.

SHINE FACTS • Location: Scotia and 6th, just off Main Street • 93 units • Residence size: 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms • Price: Mid-$200,000s • Developer: Payam Imani (Imani Developments Inc)

Construction begins on Trump tower By Martha Perkins

onald Trump is giving his name and his brand to Vancouver’s newest luxury hotel and, judging by the large crowd at the June 19 press conference, that’s already doing a lot to get the development noticed. “Vancouver is a beautiful city and this will make it even more beautiful,” Trump said as he joined Joo Kim Tiah of Holborn and George Wong of Magnum in announcing the 63-storey Trump International Hotel and Tower adjacent to FortisBC on West Georgia. firmament, the late architect Arthur Erickson was also nudging to have his presence felt. He’s the one who came up with the concept of a “twisted triangle” design that will allow the tower to conform with the City of Vancouver’s view corridor guidelines. (Each floor will twist about three-quarters of a degree away from West Georgia.) Construction has already started on the $500-million building that will have 218 luxury residences on the upper levels, 187 hotel rooms, Ivanka Trump’s new spa and “Vancouver’s first pool bar nightclub.”The third-storey terrace at FortisBC, where the press conference was held, will be become a shared conference centre space. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): French Impressionist painter Claude Monet loved to paint water lilies, and he did so over and over again for many years. Eventually he created about 250 canvases that portrayed these floating flowers. Should we conclude that he repeated himself too much? Should we declare that he was repetitive? Or might we wonder if he kept finding new delights in his comfortable subject? Would we have enough patience to notice that each of the 250 paintings shows the water lilies in a different kind of light? I vote for the latter view, and suggest that you adopt a similar approach to the familiar things in your life during the coming weeks.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): “In order to swim one takes off all one’s clothes,” said 19th-century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. “In order to aspire to the truth one must undress in a far more inward sense, divest oneself of all one’s inward clothes, of thoughts, conceptions, selfishness, etc., before one is sufficiently naked.” Your assignment in the coming week, Cancerian, is to get au naturel like that. It’s time for you to make yourself available for as much of the raw, pure, wild truth as you can stand. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): Gertrude Stein was an innovative writer. Many illustrious artists were her friends. But she had an overly elevated conception of her own worth. “Think of the Bible and Homer,” she said, “think of Shakespeare and think of me.” On another occasion, she proclaimed, “Einstein was the creative philosophic mind of the century, and I have been the creative literary mind of the century.” Do you know anyone like Stein? In my opinion, to some degree, we are all like Stein. Every one of us has at least one inflated idea about ourselves — a conceited self-conception that doesn’t match reality. Now would be an excellent time for you to deal this. Don’t be too hard on yourself, though. Just recognize it, laugh about it, and move on. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): When I close my eyes, I get a psychic vision of you as a kid playing outside on a warm summer day. Suddenly, you hear a jingling tune wafting your way from a distance. It’s the ice cream truck. You stop what you’re doing and run inside your home to beg your mom for some money. A few minutes later, you’re in a state of bliss, communing with your Fudgsicle or ice cream cone. I have a feeling that you will soon experience an adult version of this scene, Virgo. Metaphorically speaking, the ice cream man or woman will be coming to your neighborhood.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): “The only thing that we learn from history,” said the German philosopher Georg Hegel, “is that we never learn anything from history.” I’m urging you to refute that statement in the coming weeks, Sagittarius. I’m pleading with you to search your memory for every possible clue that might help you be brilliant in dealing with your immediate future. What have you done in the past that you shouldn’t do now? What haven’t you done in the past that you should do now? CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): According to my analysis of the astrological omens, now would be a pretty good time to talk about things that are hard to talk about. I don’t necessarily mean that you’ll find it easy to do. But I suspect it would be relatively free of pain and karmic repercussions. There may even be a touch of pleasure once the catharsis kicks in. So try it if you dare, Capricorn. Summon the courage to express truths that have previously been hard to pin down. Articulate feelings that have been murky or hidden. For best results, encourage those you trust to do the same. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Are you familiar with Quidditch? It’s a rough sport played by wizards in the fictional world of Harry Potter. All seven books in the series mention it, so it’s an important element. Author J.K. Rowling says she dreamed up the sport after having a quarrel with her boyfriend. “In my deepest, darkest soul,” she reports, “I would quite like to see him hit by a bludger.” (In Quidditch, a bludger is a big black ball made of iron.) I bring this up, Aquarius, because I suspect that you, too, are in position to use anger in a creative and constructive way. Take advantage of your raw emotion to make a lasting improvement in your life. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): In his erotic poem “Your Sex,” Joe Bolton exults: “My heart simplified, I touch the bud of happiness — it’s in season. And whatever grief I might have felt before simply dies inside me.” You might want to write that down on a slip of paper and carry it around with you this week, Pisces. According to my understanding of the astrological omens, the bud of happiness is now in season for you. You have good reason to shed the undertones of sadness and fear you carry around with you. I’ll tell you the last lines of Bolton’s poem, because they also apply: “Sometimes I think it’s best just to take pleasure wherever we want and can. Look: the twilight is alive with wild honey.” (The full poem: tinyurl.com/JoeBolton.)

Library louts To my fellow seniors who read newspapers in the Joe Fortes Library: 1) Do not take one of each newspaper and pile them up on your lap — it’s selfish and deprives others of their daily fix of news. 2) The library is not your house. Do not belch, fart or sneeze without at least excusing yourself. Also, removing your shoes and taking your daily snooze isn’t exactly the best use of the limited seating in the library. Besides, you will be much more comfortable in your bed at home. 3) If a buddy shows up, could you at least take it outside? Your personal life is not as fascinating to others as you might think. Move on, movie hogs To Canadian Guy, re: The morning after, Rants June 6. Are you kidding me? You go on cheap Tuesday and there is etiquette as to when to get there to see a movie? Everybody paid $8 or whatever for the same non-reserved seats. You spend the whole movie waiting to congratulate this random couple for not moving over, for holding their ground, for not being courteous. It was the friggin’ Hangover III — you think that being dead centre will make this movie bewtter? Agree it would be nice if they said please or possibly “pretty please” would appease you when asking to move over, but there is little wonder sometimes when people say Vancouver is unfriendly. You live in a big city, not in the country; space is limited sometimes. Work with it or move to Pemberton (nice open fields). Anonymous

Sushi 101 – Part 3: Eating it FollowMeFoodie By Mijune Pak

I

n Sushi 101 – Part 1, I discussed the difference between rolls (maki) and nigiri-zushi (nigiri). I suggested trying nigiri over the funkier creative rolls, but it is not to say rolls are bad. Simple rolls without all the sauces and toppings are traditionally served at sushi bars alongside nigiri. Nigiri is the simplest form of sushi showcasing the sashimi or grilled fish and what sushi connoisseurs value. In Sushi 102 – Part 2, I discussed the use of condiments. The soy sauce is meant to be used sparingly and only the fish part is dipped into it, not the rice. The wasabi is not meant to be mixed into the soy sauce, but put on separately. Lastly, the pickled ginger is a palate cleanser; however it is appropriate to use it as a “paintbrush”. Dip the pickled ginger into the soy sauce and brush it onto the fish part of the nigiri as another way of applying soy sauce to nirigi. This way, it also leaves an essence of ginger. Sushi 101 – Part 3 is about how to eat it.... What do ribs, chicken wings, pizza, Indian food and sushi have in common? They are all foods meant to be eaten with the hands. Yes, sushi is finger food. Chopsticks are still acceptable, but traditionally it is encouraged to enjoy well-made sushi with the hands. Fingers are preferred over chopsticks because properly made nigiri is challenging to eat with chopsticks. Authentic sushi risks falling apart if picked up by chopsticks because the rectangular pressed sushi rice (shari) is supposed to be loosely packed. There should be minimal chew and the sushi rice should melt in your mouth along with the fish on top. Sushi must be eaten immediately after serving, so either speed up the photos or skip them entirely. Pick up the sushi with your thumb and middle finger gripping the sides and the index finger hovering over the fish and touching the tip. If the sushi chef did not season it already with his own soy sauce, then consider dipping it in soy. Since only the fish is meant to touch the soy sauce, use your fingers to help the fish from falling off when you flip it upside down to dip. Add wasabi separately if you wish, but again, most of the wasabi in Vancouver is fake, or horseradish dyed green. Real wasabi is expensive and rare. Now that the sushi is dressed, eat it, but in one bite and with the fish touching the tongue first (so eat it upside down). Sushi is meant to be enjoyed in one bite, two if you must, but the sushi chef

should be making one-bite sizes. Some even adjust the size to suit their customer. It is not a strict “rule” to have the sashimi touch the tongue first, but the flavours of the fish are so subtle and delicate that some argue it is the only way to taste it. A good and clean sushi place should provide a hot towel for the customer and it is meant to be used between each nigiri. Wipe the fingers clean of fish oil and residue so there is no transfer of flavours from one piece of nigiri to another. For sashimi, use chopsticks. There is an art to making sushi and an art to eating it. In the end it is personal preference and taste, but knowing sushi etiquette shows appreciation to the chef, Japanese culture, and tradition. Sushi can be “grab-and-go” food, but find a place that provides an experience and enjoy it the way it was meant to be eaten.

Currywurst’s best friend By Martha Perkins

A

fter the Second World War, when Berlin was governed by four super powers, an enterprising woman took some curry from the British soldiers and some ketchup from the American soldiers, mixed them together and put them on some cut-up bratwurst. One of Germany’s favourite street foods — currywurst — was born. Two friends have brought currywurst to Vancouver. Dane Brown and Clinton McDougall recently opened Bestie in Chinatown. This being Vancouver, of course they offer a veggie wurst in addition to their classic pork Thuringer, southern BBQ turkey and smokey bison sausages. The sausage is served with either double-fried

French fries or homemade dry brine sauerkraut. They hatched the idea over five pints of beer at the Alibi Room after they were sent to LA by their former employer, Molo Design, and discovered Berlin Currywurst on Sunset Boulevard. They scouted a location, painted it a clean, bright white and hired Colin Johnson as their chef. They chose the name Bestie because it’s slang for best friend in Britain and means beast in German. The location (105 East Pender) is a bit confusing to find. First there’s the awning from the previous, short-lived sandwich shop. Then, to those who can read Chinese, there’s the lettering they uncovered for the book store that occupied the space for 50 years. But find it bratwurst lovers will....

I

’ve tried a bunch of wines over the last week that I wanted to share here, but I can’t tie them all together for a particular theme for the life of me! No matter. One day we’re enjoying blazing sun and grilling on the patio, the next we’re taking cover under awnings from torrential downpours. This week, a dynamic array to enjoy regardless of weather, your mood or who’s popping over. Enjoy!

Navarro Lopez 2010 Pergolas Old Vines Tempranillo Crianza | Valdepeñas, Spain | $11.98 | BC Liquor Stores I’m not a fan of hyperbole, but I’m gonna say it; this is possibly the best value on liquor store shelves today! I don’t even know where to start, so I’ll just offer a little laundry list of blackberry, blueberry, fig, forest floor, cloves, leather, minerals, perfectly-balanced oak and so on. Excellent ‘stain-your-teeth’ fare.

Altos de Rioja 2011 Rioja Blanco | Rioja, Spain | $20-ish | Private Stores Just as pretty as the flowers on the label. A merry tagteam of Malvasia and Viura explodes

with generosity; white flowers, peaches, lemon and lime. Total crowd-pleaser.

Masi 2012 Rosa dei Masi | Veneto, Italy | $22-24 | Private Wine Stores

Saumur Champigny 2010 Cuvee Thierry Germain | Loire Valley, France | $19.99 | BC Liquor Stores

After reading that this rosé was made from 100 per cent ‘Refosco,’ I had to dust off some old textbooks to remind myself that the grape is a dark-skinned variety native to Northern Italy, yielding power and depth and full of wildberry and dark, plummy flavours. This one sure lends that intensity, and even more so due to their use of the ‘appassimento method’, where the grapes are partially dried out in the sun on straw mats for extra concentration. Cool, geeky, but totally approachable with a nice, peppery finish.

Laughing Stock Vineyards 2011 Syrah | Okanagan Valley, BC | $36+ | Winery Direct/Private Stores David and Cynthia Enns’ Naramata winery has churned out another winner! Bridging Old World meaty, spicy, funky Syrah with the New World flair of a fruit-forward, oh-sopurple Shiraz, each swirl and sip peels back another layer. There’s a splash of Viognier in here as well, the classic Côte Rotie-style, which unfurls an extra fruity and floral component to

Chill this lively red down for 10 or 15 minutes before diving into its limestone-driven, Cabernet Franc goodness! There’s a perfectly typical regional style here, marrying cherries, leather, basil and sun. If you think Cabernet Franc has to be heavy, stemmy and green, this bottle will make you a convert, I promise.

Artazuri 2012 Garnacha Rosado | Navarra, Spain | $19-ish | Private Wine Stores Another pink wine for the summer. Imagine sucking on a cherry Jolly Rancher immediately after chewing spearmint gum. Big, bold flavours still manage to finish quite dry; in fact there’s almost a little bit of heat on the end. Feel free to serve up a big steak or something else your inner carnivore has a hankering for; it’ll do just fine.

Little Saigon When Mike Tran was delivering his collection of Vietnamese sauces to Urban Fare in Yaletown, he’d linger in the neighborhood, hoping to find somewhere to open a new branch of his Little Saigon restaurant. A few months ago, he got his wish when Blaq Sheep coffee shop closed. The location, right across from the Roundhouse community centre on Pacific Boulevard, is just down the street from the popular DD Mau Vietnamese sandwich shop. It’s the third Little Saigon for Tran and his wife Loan, whose parents taught him how to cook. They also have restaurants in Abbotsford and Mission, as well as their line of four Saigon brand sauces — hoisin, peanut,

Andy Temple has a very good reason for being so passionate about his job as an osteopathic practitioner. Growing up in England, he experienced, first hand, the wellness benefits of the profession he has since become a part of. “When I was four, I would get these headaches,” Andy explains. “My mom took me to an osteopathic practitioner and the headaches went away. When I was older, I played rugby and field hockey, and again, osteopathy helped me with my injuries. So I decided to

enter the profession.” At the Sinclair Wellness Centre in Coal Harbour, Andy offers the services he feels so passionately about. Using gentle, soft-tissue massage and by facilitating slow, rhythmic motion through the joints, he helps Vancouverites with a wide range of mobility and nonmobility issues including joint pain, whiplash, sport injuries, anxiety and depression, and asthma. “I really look at the body as a unit, looking at the big picture of health,” he says with a slight British accent.

“If there are mobility restrictions in the body, I can remove those restrictions by activating the natural healing mechanism and allowing the body to repair itself more quickly.” While he enjoys empowering the body to heal itself, Andy says he also loves the

wide range of ages he has the opportunity to work with. “I have had a patient who is only a couple of weeks old and I have one who is well into their 80s,” he says. “I love that part of my job; I love helping and meeting these different people.”

Movie Reviews Monster prequel brings laughs, lacks magic MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

Starring Billy Crystal, John Goodman Directed by Dan Scanlon Pixar heads down the prequel path and mostly succeeds with Monsters University, even Thor though much of the Mike and Diakow Sulley magic feels a little bland. This time out, the story begins as the lovable duo are enrolled at the institute of higher learning reflected in the title and don’t quite start off as the best of friends. Billy Crystal and John Goodman are back in fine form to reprise their respective lead roles with plenty of new supporting talent, most notably God Bless America’s Joel Murray and Helen Mirren as the no-nonsense Dean Hardscrabble. The flick takes a while to gather momentum; kids will delight in the beautiful aesthetic and innocent laughs but there is a striking lack of wit in the script. However, some sequences are truly original and fun to watch, particularly a scene involving the ‘Scare Games’, an amusing competition designed to test the scaring abilities of the student monsters. An emotional third act saves the movie from becoming just another rehash of old gags and situations. The main problem stems from the fact that the Pixar bar has been set so high with films like Toy Story 3, Wall-E and The Incredibles; anything else feels like a missed opportunity. Monsters University doesn’t rank with the studio’s finest efforts but is certainly one of the strongest animated films out there right now.

Blood Pressure raises the bar By Curtis Woloschuk

W

innipeg writer-director Sean Garrity saw out 2012 in fine style. In November, he became the first filmmaker to have two features — My Awkward Sexual Adventure and Blood Pressure — nominated for the Whistler Film Festival’s coveted Borsos Award in the same year. While he ultimately didn’t walk away with the award, he received an enviable consolation prize in early December when the former film landed on Canada’s Top Ten, an annual list of the country’s best cinematic offerings. Garrity hasn’t rested on his laurels in 2013. In fact, promoting two separate films has offered him little opportunity to rest at all. After a spring theatrical run, My Awkward Sexual Adventure hits DVD on July 9. Meanwhile, Blood Pressure has graced screens at festivals in Shanghai, Beijing, and Paris, while playing limited runs across Canada. The director will personally escort his latest film to the Vancity Theatre and stick around for a Q&A at its June 28 debut. While the raunchy-yet-endearing Sexual Adventure marked a departure for Garrity — his previous film, Zooey & Adam, detailed the aftermath of a rape — the moody Blood Pressure seems right in his wheelhouse. The film finds Nicole (Michelle Giroux), a despondent pharmacist, receiving letters from an anonymous admirer. With her consent, he lavishes her with odd gifts, including martial arts courses and firearms training. In return, he asks that she monitor the activities of a stranger (Jonas Chernick). Unsurprisingly, the plot thickens and things get stranger still. Speaking from Toronto, Garrity agrees that simultaneously tackling a raucous sex comedy and a slow-burning thriller proved a unique experience. Furthermore, the dual projects allowed him to maintain some equilibrium. “When I’m just doing one film, I can get overwhelmed by the tone,” he confesses.

for your chance to

“Particularly in the case of something like Zooey & Adam, which is so intense. Constantly doing that one thing can be emotionally draining after a while.” Despite considerable tonal differences, Garrity’s latest films both concern characters who are unceremoniously shaken from their complacency and left to discover a newfound sense of empowerment. For his part, Garrity sees both features following in the footsteps of his previous work. “The thing I see in common with them... the thing I bring to a film, ideally... is a sense of trying to find some sort of painful vulnerability in a character.” He laughs. “Bringing that to a thriller was much easier than bringing that to a comedy.” Charged with portraying the painful vulnerability of Blood Pressure’s Nicole is Giroux, who the director discovered completely by accident. Convinced that a higher profile actress had locked up the role, he invited Giroux — a veteran of the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival — to run lines with an actor auditioning for another part. He recalls, “When she came in, she just brought such depth and intelligence to that character. She’s so well spoken and careful and methodical in the way she communicates. She really takes time to stop and think on camera, which I really, really like.” Communication, of course, plays a major role in Blood Pressure. As Nicole becomes more taken with the letters from her mysterious confidant, his writing spills off the page (courtesy of understated digital effects) and literally becomes her world. “There is something to it that I was exploring... Exploring in a sense that I don’t really have a statement on it in one way or another,” he suggests. “You get a letter and it’s something that you show to people. ‘Oh my god. I got an actual letter from someone.’ There is something to be said for taking the time and focussing on the communication.”

swelled to over $200 million thanks to mismanagement and extensive reshoots, Marc Forster’s World War Z may go down as the most infamous. Ultimately, Max Brooks’ smart 2006 novel is just the inspiration for the film that shares its name. Gone are the firsthand accounts of the zombie uprising from ordinary citizens, replaced by the exploits of generic action hero Gerry Lane, played by Brad Pitt. Forster’s film bears many telltale signs that it’s been tinkered with, whether it’s Matthew Fox’s role being reduced to mere seconds or a completely reshot ending being so sloppily grafted that it sticks out like a decomposing thumb. Everything that Foster gets right — example: a zombie assault aboard a commercial aircraft — is offset by something spectacularly wrongheaded — example: frequently cutting to Gerry’s wife (Mireille Enos), who’s simply sitting by the phone. Admittedly, the zombie apocalypse was never going to be pretty. But did it really have to be such a mess? — Curtis Woloschuk

By Devon Taylor Two of the most meaningful words you can say to your partner meant nothing in our community ten years ago – at least not to our government. Gaining equal marriage was a substantial stride for our community. Despite our community’s reputed excellence in wedding planning, our challenge ten years later is creating a ceremony that we can be proud of. When we got engaged in 2011, my wife and I were so excited! But then came all the questions: Who’s the bride and who’s the groom? Are you both going to walk down the aisle, or will one of you stand at the front? Will you have separate or joint bachelorettes and bridal showers? We hadn’t thought about these sorts of things and any literature we found about weddings were geared towards a man and wife.

Our friend Peter conducted our ceremony using “she” and “she” and eventually pronounced us “wife” and “wife.” We had one bridal shower for the both of us. And we started our bachelorette party together then separating after a few hours. We stopped planning our wedding around other people, their expectations, and how the world thinks we should plan it. We focused to make sure that we are happy with everything that is going to happen on our special day.
