Vancouver Short Film Festival In a year when short stories are getting their due — Alice Munro’s Nobel Prize for Literature and Lynne Coady’s Giller — the Vancouver Short Film Festival is lauding little gems of cinematic story-telling. Included is Vancouver actor Mackenzie Gray’s Under the Bridge of Fear, a noir thriller that doubles as a love letter to Vancouver. (You’ve got to love characters with names such as Hamilton Drake and Georgia Thurlow.) The 21 short films and four web series episodes run the gamut of human emotions, exposing our strengths, foibles and complexities. There’s also BC All Stars, a selection of notable local films (and this in a city where a lot of great filmes are made.) The festival is November 15 and 16 at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour.) Tickets are $11 each or $40 for a pass for students/seniors; or $13 each or $55 for a pass for adults. Must be 19 and older to attend. VSFF.com • Cineworks is hosting a film and media showcase featuring three filmmakers — Jason Karman, Nathan Boey and Brian Lye — who want to engage in a lively discussion. It’s Nov. 20 from 7 to 9pm at 1131 Howe (back entrance.) Free.
Art for Life More than 100 artworks from top local and international artists such as Tiko Kerr, Holly Armishaw and London-based Emily Carr graduate Andrew Salgado will be up for bids at the 20th Annual Art for Life Fine Art Auction on Nov. 16 at the CBC Studios. Supported by galleries, private collectors and artists, the event hopes to raise at least $200,000 for the Vancouver Friends for Life Society which provides holistic health services, a daily meal program and in-home end-of-life care, for free, to people who face life-threatening illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, cancer and cystic fibrosis. As party-goers view which art they’d like hanging on their wall, they’ll be entertained by live performances by DJ Calhoun and Melody Courage of Vivace and Nathalie Heath and Mackenzie Green from So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Tickets to what’s always been a magical night are $90 and are available at ArtForLife.net. Tito Kerr’s Friends for a Better Life (pictured) is this year’s featured painting.

The art of being a tailor Exhibit honours 100th anniversary of Wong family business By Martha Perkins
I
t’s as if a window is opened and sun is streaming into Bill Wong’s soul. Words aren’t enough to convey his message so he almost lifts from his chair in excitement. Any signs of his 91 years recede and he’s back to being a young man again. And to think that all this happens because he’s asked why he’s not bitter. In the new exhibit at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden called Modernize Tailors: 100 Years of Dressing the Modern Man, there’s a photo of Wong as part of the 1946 mechanical engineering graduating class at UBC. He’s one of only two non-caucasians. He never got a chance to work in his chosen field because no one would hire a Chinese engineer. He wasn’t even allowed to vote. And so he went to work at Modernize Tailors, the business his father started in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown in 1913. There’s also a photo of all the male workers at Modernize Tailors gathered for a Christmas meal in the 1950s. It’s only men because the Chinese Exclusion Act made it
WEVancouver.com
Trained as an engineer, 91-year-old Bill Wong has no regrets about joining his family business, Modernize Tailors, which is being feted at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden. Martha Perkins photo impossible for them to bring their wives and families to Canada. Such racism could eat into a soul. Being told you couldn’t follow your dreams could tarnish all hopes and aspirations. But not if you’re Bill Wong. “My knowledge of mechani-
cal engineering helped keep the machines going; my education was not wasted,” he says, gesturing towards the 71-year-old cast iron Singer button maker that he still threads and uses today. “I’m using a different material and in a way it’s more interesting than prefabri-
cated steel. After I graduated I took a lot of art courses to finish my education. Tailoring is an art; life drawing is a study of the human body, which is tailoring. “We’re in the fashion business and it’s always changing. Fashion involves every-day life, politics,
news
the arts, lifestyle. The time. The tastes. That’s where we come in. We alter and recycle clothing and that’s not only challenging but very interesting.” On Nov. 16, JJ Lee will read from his book The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son and a Suit which recounts Lee’s experiences as an apprentice at Modernize Tailors. In a telephone interview, Lee’s also asked why Bill has not let bitterness poison his outlook. “If you tell yourself the story of your life in tragic terms, it tends not to work out well,” Lee says. “If you see your life as perseverance and overcoming obstacles, you’re a much happier person.” Puclic acknowledgemens, such as the new exhibit and the 2007 documentary, Tailor Made, have also done a lot to give relevancy to Wong’s life, Lee says. The affirmation of what he’s achieved in life “expands his heart.” When more than 200 people crammed into the gardens to hear Wong read from his diary at the exhibit’s opening, his heart expanded a whole lot more. “It was a beautiful day, a wonderful day,” Wong says of the Nov. 3 event. “I consider the way [the opening] turned out as the best day of my life.”
Lee’s reading at the garden starts at 2pm. On Nov. 17 and 25 at 10:15am, Wong will lead a class in Sundo, the Taoist Yoga that’s helped him stay limber enough to keep working. Meanwhile, Modernize Tailors is at 5 West Pender in a building bought by Bill’s brother, the late Milton Wong. The exhibit runs to Nov. 30.

A brilliant! way to help St. Pauls Dean Thullner owes his life to St. Paul’s Hopsital. He’s now helping it raise hundreds of thousands of dollars as his way of giving thanks By Martha Perkins
T
wenty-one years ago, Dean Thullner held Vancouver in the palm of his hand. With his background in theatre and dance and as owner of a 4,000 sq.ft. hair salon, he was, in his own words, “a big player” in the city’s cultural and social scene. And then his doctor told him that he had HIV and had three months to live. That palm had become a fist. If this was a movie — let’s say the Dallas Buyers Club — Thullner would have turned to underground suppliers of alternatives to AZT, the drug therapy that turned out to be deathly toxic. Instead, Thullner turned to St. Paul’s Hospital. In the late 1980s, it was the only hospital in Vancouver that would knowingly treat people with HIV/ AIDS. Not only was it developing its own antiretroviral therapy under the leadership of Dr. Julio Montaner, but its holistic approach was, at the time, unusually compassionate as well as caring. “St. Paul’s treated everyone with kindness and respect,” Thullner says. “They touched us, they didn’t put us in separate wards.” Now weighing 200 pounds and feeling fully healthy for the first time since his diagnosis, Thullner has dedicated himself to giving back to the hospital that saved his life. Everything he does has a component of charity, from the sales of art at his Davie Village hair salon, Volume, to the Pride party he helps host. But it’s brilliant!, his annual fashion/performance art show and dance party that has fast become one of the hospital’s pre-eminent fundraisers. In its first year at the

November 14 – 20, 2013
A year ago, Dean Thullner felt well enough to open Volume, a hair salon/flower shop/art gallery. He owes his life to the care he received at St. Paul’s Hospital. Martha Perkins photo Commodore it raised $100,000. In its second year (this past September), it raised $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations. Given its meteoric success, and how time-consuming it is to stage, brilliant! will now be under the auspices of St. Paul’s itself, with Thullner signed on as its volunteer producer. It is both a testament to everything that St. Paul’s has accomplished and a recognition that we are in the midst of a mental health crisis that, instead of earmarking the money for HIV, the proceeds will now be donated to the hospital’s mental health department. Thanks to the advances in treatment that St. Paul’s has helped make possible, HIV is no longer a death sentence. But Thullner also
wants to recognize that a person’s health is not only their physical wellbeing. While St. Paul’s treatments kept Thullner alive, it’s the work of its mental health department that gave him the will to keep going and techniques to help him turn his life around. At so many points over the past 20 years, including the time he was told to get his affairs in order because he likely wouldn’t live much longer, he gave up hope. Why plan for a future you won’t have? Why take care of yourself when you’re going to die soon? “When you find yourself in an isolated, dark place, you burn the candle bright because you feel it won’t burn long,” he says. St. Paul’s gave him back his hope but others have not been as lucky.
He had to watch as many of his friends and colleagues died. When he walks up Davie Street today, he can’t help but think of all the businesses, now long gone, that were owned by gay men who succumbed to HIV/AIDS. He’s also learned a lot about the struggles that people with mental illness face through his husband David Veljacic, who is bi-polar. They married four months after they met eight years ago and it’s Veljacic who’s turned part of Volume into a flower shop. As Thullner told his St. Paul’s story, other people told him theirs. He learned that St. Paul’s hired the city’s first black nurse and first male nurse. When sex trade workers were too frightened to seek medical care because they would be turned over to police, St. Paul’s staff created a system where they’d call themselves Carla 1, Carla 2.... The files were kept in a separate drawer for ready access when, for instance, Carla 17 came in. Its non-judgemental nature shines through every department. When Thullner came up with the idea for brilliant!, he wanted to learn from all the fundraisers he’d been to and didn’t like. First, he wants it to be fun. Second, he wants to treat everyone the same, whether they donate $10,000 or buy a $75 ticket. With hundreds of people volunteering — there were 168 people in the cast, plus just as many more behind the scenes — he also took the unprecendented step of telling everyone involved that they needed to buy a ticket. That means the stylist who takes a day off work to volunteer for the show also pays to be there. Thullner is deeply touched by how the fashion and style community has come together to make brilliant! well, brilliant. He and his show co-prouducer Roma Sumra (“my right arm”) are already planning next year’s theme on cultural diversity. First up is Volume’s Christmas party. From 2 to 7pm on Dec. 8 you’re invited to join the celebration. Please bring a non-perishable donation for A Loving Spoonful, which provides free nourishment for people living with HIV/AIDS. The salon (VolumeStudio.com) is at 1209 Bute Street.
Lights of Hope makes the season bright
M
arvelling at the brilliant display of lights along the Burrard Street entrance of St. Paul’s Hopsital has has become a cherished holiday tradition in Vancouver. But it’s also an important fundraiser for St. Paul’s Foundation. See it as a reminder that the hospital is a beacon of hope as well as care for its patients but that it needs your help. • Each year, volunteers build the display of lights to recognize donors to the campaign and inspire others to give • According to BC Hydro, Lights of Hope uses very little energy. To operate the full display results in an energy bill of just $65 each night thanks to the use of LED bulbs (60 per cent of the lights.) Strings of LED bulbs use only one to three kilowatt hours of energy, while strings of incandescent bulbs use anywhere from 12 to 105 kilowatt hours. • The 2013 display will be lit for the first time during a special community celebration on November 20. It’s a festive outdoor event for the entire family, with fireworks between 6:30 and 7pm, food trucks and entertainment. • The lights will be on display every night from November 20 to January 6. • You can make donations at HelpStPauls.com or by calling 604-682-8206.

n Vancouver, we really can’t complain about how cold winter is. But we can join our fellow Canadians in bemoaning how early night falls, especially as we approach the shortest day of the year. If there’s a time of year when we need a little razzle dazzle in our lives, it’s December. The West End BIA and Robson Street BIA are joining forces to brighten up our holiday season. Every Saturday from November 23 to December 31, they’re inviting you to hop on a free trolley car to Shine, Shop and Dine.
It’s a way to easily navigate the West End but also to enjoy the various light displays including St. Paul’s Lights of Hope, Robson Street’s decorative lights, Beach Avenue’s Lights for Life and, it’s hoped, a new lighting display at the Laughing Men sculptures. “We want to give people a magical holiday experience,” says Stephen Regan, executive director of the West End BIA. His Robson Street counterpart Teri Smith adds, “People can experience the great shopping and dining there is amidst a beautiful backdrop of twinkling lights. A few other surprises will be sure to get everyone into the spirit of the season.”

n 1966, the CBC aired a documentary about Canada’s most densely populated neighbourhood at the time — Vancouver’s West End. There’d been a huge growth spurt since the previous decade when, in 1958, the Sylvia Hotel was the tallest building on the horizon. But, surprisingly, the neighbourhood’s density hadn’t really gone up by much because there had been so many people living in boarding houses — often converted mansions. Today Vancouver’s density is reflected in the green-glass windows of its towering condo buildings. But that doesn’t mean that the pressures on the West End have subsided. Encompassing 112 city blocks, it is home to 45,000 people, making it the fourth most dense neighbourhood in the city. What’s striking is how many people live in rental units. Thirty per cent of the city’s rental stock is in the West End, and 81 per cent of that is considered affordable. Many apartments are studios or one-bedrooms; there are virtually no four-bedroom accommodations. As a result, it’s a place where many people start their life in Vancouver but it’s also a place that many people leave as they can afford other neighbourhoods or want more space for children. Sixty-five per cent of residents move, and each one of them is quickly replaced. This history is part of the reason why the City of Vancouver has come up with a West End Plan, city planner Holly Sovdi said at a recent meeting at Gordon Neighourhood House.
The plan’s 30-year strategy wants to make room for growth so that more people can stay in the West End but instead of changing the character of the four neighbourhoods, most of the 7,000 to 10,000 new living spaces it expects to be created by 2041 will be along the downtown “frame” — streets such as Robson, Georgia and Thurlow where tall buildings already stand. To keep the neighbourhood affordable, the city wants new developments to have a social housing component of 25 per cent. It also wants to fill in existing spaces in the lowrise neighbourhoods, partly by adding laneway housing. While still a challenge, it’s made easier by the fact that in the West End laneways are 33 feet wide; in other parts of the city the distance is only 20 feet. For the first time, there will be a zoning policy that will set out where changes can be made, making it less likely to have piece-meal decisions application by application. The city wants to invest in community infrastructure such as the aquatic centre, which needs seismic and epxeriential upgrades, the libraries and proved more space for groups such as QMunity. For businesses in this most walkable part of the city, it wants to make the area more appealling to pedestrians by widening sidewalks and improving lighting. “It won’t happen quickly,” Sovdi said of the plan’s scope and aspirations. Council is expected to debate the plan at its November 20th meeting. You can read it on the city’s website, Vancouver.ca.

Plan, as well as timetable comes under criticism by Martha Perkins
R
eaction to the West End plan has been as varied as the neighbourhood itself. At the Gordon Neighbourhood House presentation, planners faced derision, skepticism and a hesitant wait-and-see attitude. West End Seniors Network executive director Eric Kowalski was concerned that there wasn’t specific mention of seniors spaces. “All we have is Barclay Manor which which we can’t expand into evenings and weekends.” One woman who loves laneway housing can’t see it working in the West End. Referring to the planners’ illustration of a laneway housing idea for Haro and Cardero, she said it’s already an unsafe place to walk at night and access to public parking appears blocked in the drawing. “How do you plan to make it safe,” asked another woman. “Lighting laneways? I just can’t see living there with small children.” As to complaints that the plan does nothing to address a real concern in the neighbourhood — merchants being forced to close their doors because of rising rents — city planner Holly Sovdi said such things were beyond the city’s control. However, the plan does reduce the risk of redevelopment of existing buildings that will result in higher rents. “We want to protect existing rental stock and not allow speculation,” Sovdi said, noting that since some buildings were built in the 1970s with more density than they were allowed, tearing down some of the old buildings to make way for newer, more expensive buildings “doesn’t make sense.” One man questioned how much meaningful employment will be created by the plan. New jobs are promised but will they be full-time with “proper” wages? When it came to complaints about parking, Sovdi said his department did listen to the “push back” over its proposals. Parking issues have been taken out of the plan to give time for further reflection. (One of the issues is that there are few spaces on the street but it’s too expensive for residents to rent the unused parking stalls in apartment buildings. It’s the difference between $76 a year for a city parking permit and $40 to $50 a month for the indoor parking space.) After being given months to talk about a draft plan that had few details, one man bemoaned having to read through the entire plan and comment
thoughtfully in the few weeks before council’s discussion. “It’s insulting. There’s no time at all.” “The engagement process has been flawed since day one,” said one woman, who said the city should have had people go door-to-door to discuss the plan and what it means to the West End. “This process has been about manufacturing consent.” When one woman asked “how can we keep this city accountable,” Sovdi said that the process has tried to capture as much of the neighbourhood’s sentiments as possible. Lobbying efforts for an extension of the public debate are still ongoing by groups such as West End Neighbours. Council turned down its request at a Sept. 23 meeting but the group takes heart from a letter from the Vancouver City Planning Commission, also asking for an extension. “Embarking on three community plans simultaneously, with a fourth underway concurrently, was an ambitious undertaking,” the commissioners say. “Pausing for a review may delay completion, but improve outcomes for the other indicators of success.” WEN is part of the new Coalition of Vancouver Neighbourhoods which wants to act as a united, non-political voice in the planning process. As well, an ad hoc West End Plan Working Group (separate from but supported by WEN) has been formed to facilitate analysis and discussion of the draft West End Community Plan. It hosted a strategy meeting November 12. Heritage Vancouver wants the neighbourhood’s historical buildings to be remembered in any discussions. It’s hosting a presentation called “The West End Plan: Ensuring our Past Enhances our Future” at Gordon Neighbourhood House on Nov. 13 starting at 7pm. But Stephen Regan, the executive director of the West End BIA, is much more positive. “Not everything we wanted landed in the plan but I think the city struck and interesting balance,” he told WE Vancouver. His business members like the thought of more density because it brings more foot traffic and they want something to be done to prevent growing families (like Regan’s) getting squeezed out of the neighbourhood’s small living spaces. More twoand three-bedroom spaces are needed, says the father of three daughters. “Challenge yourself people,” he says. “We have good architects and designers and planners... Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what it could be but if we could pull it off it would be pretty amazing.”

ounded 16 years ago in Vancouver’s West End, Modo The Car Co-op celebrated a milestone achievement last month, adding its 300th vehicle to the fleet. The region’s only local carshare co-op will also double its fleets in Surrey and Richmond and place its first vehicle in Coquitlam this fall. Modo’s 300th vehicle found its home at District Main, at Main and E. 28th. Being a not-for-profit co-operative means Modo is able to offer the lowest rates on carsharing in the region. “We’re proud to not only save people money, but to achieve that through our co-operative business model,” says Modo board chair Joel DeYoung. “We’re making cities across the region more livable
and less congested, protecting vital green space by removing cars from the road.” Modo estimates that for every vehicle it adds to the grid, as many as 13 privately owned vehicles are taken off the road, with 41 per cent of members reporting they’d sold or gotten rid of a vehicle within one year of joining Modo. In a recent survey, 81 per cent of members said they would likely have bought a personal vehicle had it not been for Modo. In a region where a new car is added to the road roughly every 15 minutes, carsharing offers relief to Metro Vancouver’s land base. From 16 West Enders sharing two cars, Modo has grown to more than 9,000 drivers sharing 300 cars, trucks, vans and electrics. — Kelsey Klassen

Lewis Kane: outside the box By Kelsey Klassen
Y
ou could see the surprise in the eyes of the audience. When Lewis Kane was introduced under the bright lights of Talent Time at the Biltmore, no one expected a 6’5” Scotsman in a kilt and undershirt to step up to the microphone with his accordion, smile sweetly and begin singing a softly lilting cover of Wagon Wheel by Bob Dylan. “Rock me mama like a wagon wheel, rock me mama anyway you feel, heyyyy, mama rock me.” As the North American folk anthem limbicly landed, hardened East Van hearts visibly swooned. The only person who knew this goodbomb was about to go off would be Paul Anthony, Talent Time host and scout, who discovered Kane performing at the West End Farmers Market earlier this summer. Kane, a 22-year-old architecture graduate from Scotland, has lived in Vancouver for just over a year, and in his West End bachelor apartment since the start of June. “It’s my own little sanctuary. People have time to talk to each other in this neighbourhood. People live here because it is a community and you can stop and talk to your neighbours, pet their dog. It’s a great cross section of society.” The West End has a history of attracting newcomers. For Kane, it’s become an integral part of his dream to establish himself in Vancouver. “I could not wait to get here. Then when I was here, it was,” he pauses, before sighing, “better than I imagined. Walking out of the airport, just being hit with the scent of the air and how fresh it was. And Vancouver was all glass and space-aged in my eyes. “I’ll always remember being on Cypress Mountain, the first time I went skiing here. When darkness fell and those flood lights came on, I was like, ‘This is where Vancouver’s night life is,’” he
says, his unruly hair nodding in agreement. Kane has had music to help him along, but his assimilation strategy included joining in with as many different groups as he could. “I row at Vancouver Rowing Club. I’m always quite conscious to not put myself in a box or limit myself to certain types of people and the rowing club is great for that. There’s people from all walks, all professions, all ages. And I’m gay as well, so it’s this common thread. It’s not, like, the ‘Tall Gay Club’ — I don’t want to be casting aspersions,” he smiles. “But the rowing club is a really special spot for me.” The Perthshire lad, who, like his two brothers, is proficient in multiple instruments (be it piano, violin or bagpipes), fondly recalls his parents taking him to see legends like Jock the Box and Full Steam Ahead in Killin village bars well before he was of age. But it’s a long gangly leap from instrumental traditionals and back up bands to making Bob Dylan standards sound sexy. “I never sang before I left Scotland. I took myself out of the scene that I grew up in for 21 years, a music scene that was very connected to each other. It was a big kick up the backside.” And for someone who moved here hoping to find work in architecture, it’s telling that he isn’t looking all that hard anymore. “I’ve had good culture shocks. People here are very expressive about spirituality and how they’re feeling in their soul. Where I come from, there’s a lot of subtleties involved with interactions. A nod and grimace will speak volumes. I’ve gotten much more in touch with that side of me since I’ve been here; you can’t write a song with a nod and a grimace.” Just prior to sitting down with WE at Cardero Bottega, Kane had been in Nelson performing on Kootenay Co-op Radio. He had also just taken part in the Lab Art Show. Between gigs, he is known to drop in to Spartacus Books’ for their monthly Squeeze Box
Circles (the next one is Dec. 5) and represented at their annual niche night Accordion Noir — his pure voice floating like sea foam over the surface of background chatter and genre stereotypes. “It’s an underdog instrument and the butt of a lot of jokes. It’s definitely more popular in Scotland, but still, it’s not as cool as guitar when you’re in high school, so I was constantly trying to make this instrument more cool. It’s been, like, my life’s work,” he says with an understated chuckle. “I get a lot of people saying, ‘I’ve never heard an accordion played that way; that’s so different.’ But no matter how you play it, it has that sound to it, which is nostalgic for a lot of people. There’s so many cultures across the world where accordion is deeply rooted.” While many fellow squeeze box geeks obsess over their instruments, he pragmatically turned in his old accordion for this travel-sized one in Nottingham, just prior to boarding a plane to Vancouver. He needed something small enough to fit in carry-on. Equally practical, the West End is also walking distance from his “office” — after quitting his job, Kane spent his entire summer busking on the beaches of English Bay. “When I play there, no one is paying me to turn up, but I put everything into that performance. My entire set is built around what would be nice to hear at sunset on English Bay. It might not be Queen Elizabeth Theatre, but I think it’s pretty good stage, with a pretty good backdrop.“ Lewis Kane is now traveling down the West Coast to South America. “I’m currently on board a train bound for what I’m expecting to be the biggest adventure of my life so far. My accordion is by my side; my bicycle, Fergie is a few carriages behind, and we’re about to take to the open road,” he writes on his blog. Keep up with his adventures and new music at LewisKane.com. He’ll be back in Vancouver and taking to (very tall) microphones in May.
Scottish transplant Lewis Kane can probably name every other accordionist in Vancouver by now. The West End musician has marked out his territory on the shores of English Bay, where his interpretations of popular music have quickly caught attention. Rob Newell photo

Heavy petting Pet massage practitioner Marta Banat translated her own dog’s illness into an opportunity to give Vancouver pets a helping hand By Kelsey Klassen
T
he eyes may be the windows to the soul, but words are what pull back the curtains. Animals can telegraph anxiety and suffering through body language, but they have no means of explaining the source. That’s where Marta Banat comes in. After discovering her rescue dog, Rocco, had severe allergies and idiopathic epilepsy, she decided to undergo training at the NorthWest School of Animal Massage. She was so inspired by the results of her holistic approach, that she started All Paws Animal Massage, which brings mobile animal massage and Reiki services straight to your pet. In careful collaboration with veterinarians, she can help your dog or cat fend off the effects of aging, relax aching muscles, and overcome fears, traumas and anxieties. We caught up with her after a walk with Rocco to learn more: In addition to massage, what else do you do for Rocco? I take him to a holistic vet, Dr. Michael Goldberg at Vancouver Animal Wellness Hospital, and Rocco gets homeopathic treatments, chiropractic adjustments. He’s always under veterinary care, but we also do massage and Reiki with him. I try to make sure it’s a well-balanced gentle treatment. What changes did you see in Rocco after you started massage sessions? Two years ago, he

would have seizures once a month. And I said, bottom line, if he has one more than every three weeks, he’s going on all the drugs. But in the meantime, I thought, “Let’s give it a shot. Let’s see what else we can do for him.” So that’s when we actually went to Dr. Goldberg. Do animals enjoy massage the same way humans do? It’s very different. Because with a human, you go in and the therapist asks what you need help with. With an animal, unless a vet says specifically what the diagnosis is and what they would like you to work on, you have to watch the animal and see where the possible tension and pain is. It’s a joint effort between the vet, the owner and the practitioner to figure out what the animal needs and establish a program for them. Are your programs typically ongoing? It’s all about relaxing the muscles, working on tension, improving the blood flow. With senior animals, it’s an ongoing health program. With younger animals, it’s a proactive maintenance approach. You’re trying to prevent. When you have tension in your muscles, that impacts your joints, impacts your movement and you start compensating. Things build up, and when you get older, that’s when you really see the effects. Or it’s a rehab program due to an injury — we work on that, and then that’s the end of it. What are signs that your animal is suffering from tension? There are a few things to look out for. If you see any lameness or a different pattern of movement. One of the big things is the way they carry their head — if, all of a sudden, they carry their head really low, it’s a sign that there’s something not quite right. Always check with the vet to make sure there’s no serious, underlying problems, and then decide from there what is the appropriate course of action. Another sure sign is skin twitching. When you pet your dog or cat, and you see the skin twitch, that means that the facia underneath has some adhesion or there’s tension. When did you realize this was what you wanted to do? I worked so much with my dog when I was learning techniques and studying, seeing firsthand the day-to-day benefits. And then I had a client — a cat — who had a traumatic event and was afraid of the ceiling fan and wouldn’t go to her litter box. So we did a relaxation session and Reiki, and it really worked for that fear. Are referrals required? If there is a case such as injury or lameness, that comes through the vet. But one of my passions is working with anxiety and fear, and massage is an amazing way to teach an animal to relax. In cases of abuse or anxiety, the body might

Are the techniques similar to human massage? We don’t do deep tissue massage unless this is something the vet wants us to do. We do very gentle strokes, but it’s all based on Swedish massage techniques. In reality, you gain more with less. Gentle techniques are where you get the most results; especially with arthritic dogs and painful cases. You’re going to do gentle strokes that create release and fluid flow, or create or dissipate heat. How do the animals respond initially? It’s such an individual thing. Usually the first session, there’s very little actual massage happening because I introduce a touch that is very unusual to them. This is not just petting. I’m touching specific sites and I’m doing it in a very specific way. But because, usually, this results in a feeling of relief or ease or pleasure, then by the second session, they go, “You know what? I felt so much better afterward, I’m just going to plop myself right here and you can do your thing.”

SINGLE MOTHERS GET A HELPING HAND FROM SFU STUDENTS
E N J OY O U R
Eating healthily and being fit can be a luxury for the average income-earner in Vancouver. For low-income single mothers, balancing budgets while integrating wellness into their families’ lives is even more challenging. Since its inception in 2011, Hunger Actions, a community outreach program run by SFU students, has helped 120 mothers and their families develop skills to lead a healthy lifestyle while maximizing every dollar. The program offers interactive workshops providing nutritional meal planning, dietary consulting and fitness tips, while instilling financial literacy skills. Sponsored by Capital One Canada, the Enactus SFU program has also partnered with community agencies such as the YWCA and Salvation Army. EnactusSFU.com

Tractor Foods is a small, cafeteria-style joint at the corner of West 4 and Cypress. Specializing in “everyday, healthy foods,” the menu focuses on soups, salads, sandwiches and stews, all priced under $10, and available to take away or eat-in. Even better, it’s licensed, meaning six ounces of Blasted Church’s Cabernet Merlot is just $8. (Hey, a little red wine a day keeps the heart surgeon away.) Try the roasted red and yellow beet salad with green beans, goat’s milk feta and herb vinaigrette ($3.25) or the arugula with grilled pears, candied walnuts, blue cheese, and lemon-champagne vinaigrette ($3.25). Stews are $8 each. We tried the braised beef short rib with porcini mushrooms, which was rich, flavourful, and hearty. Also good was the Moroccan chicken with chickpeas, which had just a lick of heat and moist meat. Fine dining it’s not, but if you’re looking for a quick and healthy meal on the go, or a respite from rich, holiday fare, this might be the answer. TractorFoods.com

DRINK | DINE Buy to give… Several new programs have launched at local Vancouver restaurants with the aim of letting restaurant goers give back at every meal. StreetSmart Canada is an innovative system that works with restaurants to support local food banks. Diners at participating restaurants are offered the option of adding one dollar to their bill at the end of the evening. For a party of four people, that’s only 25 cents per person. The restaurant then remits 100 per cent of all money raised to StreetSmart, which then passes it on to the local food bank. Participating restaurants include Chambar, Cuchillo, España, Fable, Hamilton Street Grill, Lupo, Maenam, Milestones, Provence Restaurants, Sol Sun Belt Cookery, and The Fish House in Stanley Park. The program runs now through December 31. StreetSmartCanada.org Mealshare works on a “buy one, give one” structure, where diners at participating restaurants can order menu items with the Mealshare logo next to them, and in turn a meal will be donated to someone in need. Participating restaurants include C Restaurant, Whet, Ethical Kitchen, Living Café, Aphrodite’s Organic Café, Darby’s Pub, and Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen. Dim sum in Hong Kong Follow Me Foodie im sum literally means “touch the heart” and, in a Western context, it’s considered Chinese-style tapas. Historically, it was a meal served at teahouses for farmers along the Silk Road, a loud experience with music and snacks. Nowadays, throughout China it is a brunch shared by friends and families, although a few places in Hong Kong serve it all day. Depending on the quality of restaurant, it is also seen as a luxurious activity, especially on a weekday, since it implies you don’t have to work and can afford to spend hours eating and sipping tea with good company. Along with the change in definition, the dishes have also come a long way. Vancouver dim sum chefs have become creative by adapting dishes to local tastes, but so has Hong Kong. It’s a very international, lively, and modern city, so while it is one of the homes to traditional Cantonese food, there is a scene for modern dim sum. Sure, it is an insult to mess around with a dish that took a dim sum chef his whole life to master, but if you have the foundation and technique down, then why not bring a new flavour to it? I can’t always take the purist approach; the old and the new can’t be compared. Both can be appreciated in their respective categories and for the clientele they are intended for. Here are some modern dim sum dishes and concepts in Hong Kong that might make their way to Vancouver.
1) Dim Sum Lounge and Art Gallery at Duddell’s, Duddells.co This new upscale restaurant is popular with a posh crowd and social elite. It offers traditional Cantonese dishes with slight modern influences and Asian-infused cocktails in a lounge-like atmosphere. (The first floor’s business dress code is enforced and they also have a garden terrace and Library Room for diners to relax). The Saturday Salon Brunch features unlimited dim sum, brut, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. While it is pricey, the chef uses premium ingredients on classic dishes. Take for example his steamed shrimp dumplings with bird’s nest, which is a luxury version of a prawn dumpling (har gow). The dishes are served in individual portions rather than shared tapas. Closest thing to it in Vancouver: Bambudda in Gastown, Bambudda.ca
2) Vegetarian Truffle Dumplings at Summer Palace at Island Shangri-La Hotel, shangri-la.com/hongkong/islandshangrila/ Mushrooms have been long valued for their health benefits and symbolism (long life and rebirth) in Chinese culture. However, truffles are new to
Vancouver’s favourite breakfast destination for over 10 years.

the game. The Shangri-La’s vegetarian dumplings stuffed with water chestnuts, oyster mushrooms, cabbage and carrots are topped with black truffle pesto, and two kinds of seaweed. For the traditional route, don’t miss out on their roast duck. This two Michelin Star restaurant is deserving of its many prestigious awards. Closest thing to it in Vancouver: 3 Mushroom Dumplings at Jade Restaurant in Richmond.
Canadian-raised chef Alvin Leung, who is also a judge on MasterChef Canada, is the king of molecular gastronomy in Hong Kong. Previously an engineer, he takes Chinese cooking to the extreme at his restaurant, Bo Innovation. It’s not for everyone, but the creativity is admirable, techniques professional, and food thoughtful. The XLB is sensitive to being altered, but his interpretation of it uses reverse specification so all you get is the pork soup, which is the most desirable part in XLB. Closest thing to it in Vancouver: Sorry, you must go to Hong Kong for anything he does.

get asked for recommendations for books on wine all the time. The thing is, whoever’s asking usually has visions of grandeur, that they’re going to pick up some 700-page glossy tome, spend days poring over the pages and, upon closing the back cover, will know the entire world of wine like the back of their hand. The best of intentions are there, but within days these heavy by Kurtis Kolt encyclopedic volumes almost always go from the bag to the coffee table, and then straight to their final resting place, gathering dust on the bookshelf, never to be cracked again. What most people need, myself included, are books on wine they can actually use. A book that gets highlighted, dog-eared and spilled upon weekly. Well, my buddy, wine-writer and educator James Nevison, has just published such a book. Had A Glass 2014 is his annual ode to the top 100 wines under the $20 mark currently available in BC. whites, pinks, reds and fortified wines, his take is always casual and full of enthusiasm — often setting the scene that would suit each wine well. With each recommendation, you get food pairing suggestions, a shot of the label for easy retail navigation and a bar code for extra geekery. Before diving into all of that, however, he lays out how to properly taste, shop, decipher labels, pinpoint aromas and flavours, and so much more in a mere 21 pages, something other books take hundreds to accomplish. The book, published by Random House, comes in at $19.95, itself an under-$20 bargain. I advise you do what I do — pick up a copy for yourself and then another couple for what will be well-received gifts and stocking stuffers. Above all, do enjoy perusing the thing. It’s James’ tone and cheer that I always enjoy most. Below, two of his profiles excerpted from the book, on wines that I’m happy to endorse as well!

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
Three finalists chosen for RenoMe! With FortisBC contest By Kerry Vital
Three British Columbia residents are getting the chance to win $10,000 towards a room makeover with natural gas after being chosen as a finalist in the RenoMe! with FortisBC contest. Over 150 entries were received from all over the province, but the final three were narrowed down to Gayle Curtis of Maple Ridge for her kitchen, Melissa Tolsma of Nanaimo for her outdoor space and Wendy Frose of Chilliwack for her great room. Designer Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. (SGDI) has taken on the outdoor space project, while SGDI’s Stephanie Malhas will design the great room, and Susanne Doise of Sensitive Design will handle the kitchen. In the next phase of the contest, the three finalists will receive renderings of their space from their designer, and then readers will vote on which one deserves the makeover the most. The room with the most votes will win $10,000 towards their renovation, while the second and third-place finalists will receive $2,000 each. Doise has consulted with Curtis, and has provided a rendering of how she thinks the kitchen could look once it’s renovated. “The kitchen is in bad shape,” says Doise. “I want to give her a better flow between the work spaces and the rest of the room.” Curtis calls her kitchen disgusting, gross and old, and says she’s tired of burning everything she cooks due to a bad stove, so Doise will be incorporating natural gas in the kitchen with a Viking dual-fuel gas range. “It’s a very simple way to use natural gas,” she says. Gas cooktops have long been popular with professional
chefs for their even cooking, precise temperature control and instant heat. Homeowners have increasingly been choosing them for their new and renovated kitchens alike. One of the concerns with the room is the lack of space. In order to combat this, Doise has suggested a movable butcher block island that can be pushed into the pantry wall to open up the space. She notes that currently, you can’t even open the refrigerator without bumping into the existing counter, and opening the dishwasher blocks you from doing anything else in the kitchen. “I want to bring in more light as well,” she says. “It will look more friendly and inviting.” She also plans to incorporate an area for the homeowners to work and study. “I want to make it multifunctional,” she says. Doise has considered the owner’s tastes as well, and would incorporate her likes and dislikes into the final design. “I want to make her happy,” she says. Malhas is similarly excited about her great room project. “People live in their space for so long that they get used to it and have trouble visualizing changing it,” she says. “I don’t have that emotional connection to it so I can see the potential in the room and suggest ways to fix it.” The current room is the main living area for Frose’s family, and it’s in dire need of an update. “Any time I can get into wood panelling is good,” laughs Malhas. “It will definitely be gone.” One of the biggest issues with the room is the current wood-burning fireplace, which isn’t centred in the room and makes for awkward

more energy-efficient and more convenient for homeowners. You no longer have to worry about power outages, since the fireplace doesn’t run on electricity, and there is no more waiting for your fireplace to heat up, since natural gas is available at the push of a button. There
are even some models that can be pre-programmed to turn on seating around it. Malhas plans to at a specific time. Among the ideas Gallop has for the yard is a hot tub with an arbor above it. “That will give them a little bit of coverage and privacy,” she says, adding that the hot tub will be heated by natural gas. Gallop also plans to include an outdoor kitchen with natural gas barbecue and a natural gas firepit. A natural gas hot tub is a great idea for homeowners, with its consistent, fast heat and automatic safety shut-off controls for added peace of mind. Swimming pools can also be heated by natural gas. FortisBC notes that a natural gas barbecue can be extremely convenient for homeowners looking for fuel on demand, Sarah Gallop rendering as you’ll never have to deal Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. has envisioned an outdoor space with a natural gas hot tub, natural gas barbecue and with running out of propane natural gas firepit for Melissa Tolsma of Nanaimo. or charcoal. FortisBC offers a energy calculator that will help you compare the cost of fuel sources and their energy efficiency, demonstrating that natural gas is the most affordable choice for homeowners. Find it at www. fortisbc.com/energycalculator. FortisBC natural gas customers are also continuing to benefit from some of the lowest prices in a decade, at under $4 per gigajoule. Closet editing 101
Don’t have room in your closet for the influx of winter clothes? Personal assistant Rosario Ruiz y Laza helps you make some tough decisions. Rob Newell photo
By Rosario Ruiz Y Laza
C
loset editing is one of my favorite activities — it’s just fun to play dress-up. Some people have amazing pieces in their wardrobe but, honestly, they belong in a vintage store waiting for a young fashionista to wear. Better to have a smaller, more modern and appropriate closet full of items that you wear, and not a closet overflowing with items that don’t fit, are dated or just ill-fitting. Quite often I tell my clients, “It’s not coming back, and if it does it should not be on you.” Bodies and fashions change with time; change with it.
Tips: There is no short cut to this one unless you already know that the items don’t fit. Every item of clothing needs to be tried on. If the item is tight, worn, too baggy, wrong colour, was a gift or passed along, let it go. Ask yourself, “How do I want to look and
what pieces are missing?” Always have the basics in your closet, go to the higher end stores when they have sales; this way you
get better tailoring and fabrics, which are essential as we age. Do not shop at the same stores as your teenagers!

WHAT ARE DIVA DATE NIGHTS? A “spiritual circle for the modern woman,” each Diva Date Night is different, but provides the opportunity to grow in a new way. “It’s super welcoming, super heart-opening,” say founder Kate Muker. “It’s more the vibe like a yoga class. You come in, you sit down, you take off your shoes. It’s being in a room with a whole bunch of women who are loving and heart-centred.”
Living Extraordinary Live is Nov. 21 at the Jewel Ballroom (1495 W. 8th) from 7-9:30pm. $40; ConsciousDivas.com
The guiding principle is that, through self awareness, participants are able to shift their consciousness and remove blocks that are holding them back in life and in business. Each evening follows a simple structure — meditation, sharing, featured topic, and mingling. The next Diva Date Night is Dec. 3 with intuitive healer Rachel Harris. Learn more at ConsciousDivas.com

a local community centre, where she had brought her young daughter for post-nap play, Muker recalls her own ‘aha’ moment: “I was working with a coach, and so much of my understanding of spirituality was very intellectual. I understood the concepts on that level, but they weren’t necessarily landing in my heart. Did I really believe them to that core? Once I had that awareness, so many things in my life shifted.” And she hopes first-timers and long-time Divas alike continue to have those shifts. “When that person has that change, that changes how their interactions are with their friends, their family, their community. Sometimes there will be an even greater impact: At our last event we had a speaker from Beauty Night Society, and someone wrote her a cheque for $1,000 right after the event. It’s that ripple affect that impacts the community in a big way.”

and driving/cycling and can quickly clog up storm drains. We are at the dangerous/unsightly stage now on many streets. So, here’s the request: can the City of Vancouver please do something about this mess before it gets out of hand?! The solution is very simple: business owners, home owners and condo/apt building managers are supposed to maintain the sidewalk, boulevard and curb lane that runs along their property (on any and all sides). Fine (repeatedly) those that don’t maintain the sections for which they’re responsible. One fine should be all it takes to teach a person/organization to do the right thing. The threat of a fine is useless if there’s no follow-through. If they’re not willing to do that, then

Is this seat taken? Although I could choose to be offended by you — the mature/elderly woman with chocolate-coloured leather jacket who moved to the other seat beside your husband when I sat down in the theatre seat beside you for Saturday night’s screening of the Dallas Buyer’s Club at Tinseltown Cinema — I would prefer to express my gratitude for not only vacating the seat beside me but also for showing the entire audience what selfish judgemental assholes you both are. Two women who wanted to sit together politely asked if both of you would move down to fill that single seat beside me so that they could sit in the row that we all shared, to which your husband replied, ‘no’. When that single seat beside me sat empty for the movie’s entire duration as three more couples searched for pair of seats in the packed theatre before the movie began, I could only conclude that you didn’t want to sit beside a plus-size developmentally disabled man such as myself who
poses no danger to anyone; nor are my larger body size and diagnosis of autism contagious in any way whatsoever. I’ve chosen to accept everyone as they are until they show a valid reason for me to distance myself from them and while you don’t know me nor are you aware of what a kind-hearted, gentle, considerate person that I am, I really hope that I never again have to encounter uppity ‘creme de la phlegm’ such as yourselves. As a final note, I took my garbage with me when I left the theatre while you both left your popcorn bags and drinking cups on the floor. A fatso like myself could probably teach you about manners and consideration if I didn’t think that is was a waste of time to begin with. Leslie Benisz

Red Cross accepting donations to Phillipines aid, Ottawa to match By Jeff Nagel
F
ilipino-Canadians and their supporters in the Lower Mainland are rallying to help raise relief aid money to support victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the devastated Phillipines. A benefit concert is planned in Surrey Thursday night and Indo-Canadian car dealer Sukhi Bath has pledged to pay for the hall and 1,000 dinners – a value of about $20,000. The $30-per-person Celebrity Tribute for the Phillipines by the Friends of the Filipino Typhoon Victims is at 6pm Nov. 14 at Surrey’s Grand Taj Banquet Hall and promises dinner and entertainment, including performances by Filipino Canadians and a silent auction. Planned performers include Tina Turner tribute artist Luisa Marshall, originally from Manilla, as well as ABBA, Neil Diamond and Elvis tribute acts. For tickets call 604-580-1000 or see LuisaMarshall.com. “Our goal is to raise $50,000 total,” said Bath, who said he will personally guarantee a minimum of $20,000 in proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross for typhoon relief. Up to 10,000 people are feared dead after a massive storm surge and ensuing flooding in what’s been described as the worst storm to ever hit the country. Millions of survivors are without adequate food and drinking water and face a monumental challenge to rebuild. To directly contribute to the Canadian Red Cross for Phillipines relief, visit RedCross.ca or call 1-800-418-1111. The federal government has pledged $5 million in aid in the wake of the disaster and has also said it will also contribute matching amounts to its Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund for every dollar Canadians give to registered charities up to Dec. 9. Canada has also deployed its Disaster Assistance Response Team to the Phillipines.

ristotle once said art takes nature as its model. Now, so do 20 Emily Carr students, who are turning plants into living artwork for this weekend’s Eastside Culture Crawl. “This [collaboration] is all so new, it’s all so natural and beautiful,” begins Fred Collay, cofounder of By Nature Design — the source of the plants and the patented wall frames for the project. Collay’s business partner, Nicolas Rousseau, discovered the WallFlower frames in France, where they are both from. Invented in the South of France in 2006 and brought to market two years later, the system caught on quickly, with more than 300,000 sold to date. Rousseau, who trained as a horticulturist in green wall and roof systems before coming to Vancouver five years ago, teamed up with Collay — a graduate of marketing, business and communications — to launch By Nature Design here in 2010. They developed their own soil to work with the product, and established their business in 1000 Parker Street — a converted art studio complex overflowing with artists and artisans, and, conveniently, the headquarters of the Culture Crawl. “We are in the middle of the artists’ world here. For us it was just natural to have connections with people who have creative ideas. It makes sense, because we want this living frame to be seen as a piece of natural art, not just plants, not just decoration,” says Collay, the public face of the company. Let’s keep Christmas Just Between Friends Shop Talk by Kelsey Klassen
Children’s and maternity deals Just Between Friends, which is billed as the largest children’s and maternity event in North America, will be taking over the Hellenic Community Centre from November 15 to 17. It’s a way for parents whose children have grown out of their old clothes to make a little money by selling them at the sale while picking up economical deals. It’s a franchise idea brought to Vancouver by Yendi Pang, who’d participated at an event in Washington State. It works this way: consignors use an online bar code system to price and tag their own items, which they bring to the sale. JBF sets up the venue and runs the event. Vendors earn 60 to 70 per cent of what they sell. Go to JBFSale.com for details.

Vancouver corsetiere Melanie Talkington shares vintage underwear and corsets in sexy new book By Sabrina Furminger
M
elanie Talkington has become an international corset sensation since opening Lace Embrace Atelier in 1997 — and now, she’s bringing her old-school brand of laced-up sexy to the book world. Somewhere between supplying costumes to Hollywood productions, contributing dozens of corsets to an exhibition at the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and selling sexy laced pieces to Vancouver women (and a few men) through her East 16th boutique, Talkington found the time this year to author a book. Entitled A Provocative Look at Intimate Apparel: Antique Corsets and Vintage Lingerie 1880-1960, the 52-page book features fullcolour photographs of treasured items from Talkington’s worldrenowned collection (the largest of its kind on the planet). “It’s fun to look at [underwear] from a provocative perspective,” said Talkington during a recent phone interview in advance of the book’s November 4 release. “One of my favourite pieces in there is my 1940s black bra that has satin hands over the lace. It looks like someone’s cupping your breasts.” The images of corsets, brassieres, knickers, garters and stockings (all of which were shot by Talkington’s partner, Homeros Gilani) are accompanied by translations of titillating erotica that first ran in 19th century French fetish catalogues (another type of item Talkington loves to collect). “When I was translating these stories from French to English, I fell in love with the French language, French culture, and French lingerie,” said Talkington, who will soon travel to Paris to collect the 40 corsets she lent to the Louvre. “The English language doesn’t have all of that poetry. We’re very cut and dry and we kind of get to the point of what we’re saying.” The book also serves an accompaniment to the exhibition of vintage underwear she’s put together for upcoming Taboo shows — and offers a preview of what to expect from Talkington’s Antique Corset Museum (scheduled to open in 2014). A Provocative Look at Intimate Apparel: Antique Corsets and Vintage Lingerie 1880-1960 retails for $22.99 at Lace Embrace Atelier (219 East 16th) and on their website; they’ll also have a stack of books at their showcase table at Christmas at Hycroft (Nov. 21-24).

Bob Guccione was more than just gold chains and Penthouse magainzes, says documentarian Barry Avrich of his new film, Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story. It screens Dec. 6 and 7 at the Whistler Film Festival, which will also host a one-time screening of Caligula, Guccione’s porn boondoogle starring Helen Mirren and Peter O’Toole on Dec. 6.
After Cornucopia and before the snow: Whistler Film Fest This year’s festival screens River Phoenix’s final film, hands out big money to Canadian filmmakers

histler is already considered a primo destination for skiing, snowboarding, and partying, but for a few days this December, it’ll also be a hotspot for
cinephiles. From December 4 to 8, more than 10,000 film buffs will gather in the snowy village for the Whistler Film Festival. A total of 84 films from 14 countries will screen over the course of the festival — including 19 world premieres, 19 Canadian premieres, and 34 Western Canadian premieres. “We’re really trying to unearth hip, little, edgy gems,” said Paul Gratton, WFF’s director of programming. “These are films that make you sit up and say, ‘what the hell was that about?’” Among them: River Phoenix’s final cinematic outing, Dark Blood. The film was unfinished at the time of Phoenix’s 1993 death, its unassembled footage condemned to a storage locker. When the insurance company announced its plans to destroy the footage, Dark Blood’s aging director George Sluizer arranged for it to be (as Gratton puts it)
abducted. Nearly 20 years after Phoenix’s death, Sluizer finally assembled a rough cut of Dark Blood, providing voiceover narration for the 20 per cent of the script that was never filmed. “I don’t know if this will ever get a theatrical release, and I can tell you, River Phoenix’s performance is extremely charismatic,” said Gratton. “My feeling is you go to film festivals to see this stuff because you may never see it again.” Also in the line-up: Cas & Dylan, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and directed by Beverly Hills 90210 alum Jason Priestley; Bruce McDonald’s The Husband, about a man whose wife is arrested for sleeping with a 14-year-old boy; Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story, a peek into the life of the infamous producer and Penthouse founder (Guccione’s universally panned Caligula will also screen); Ice Soldiers, a sci-fi thriller set in Canada’s North starring Adam Beach (Arctic Air); Quebec’s highest grossing film, Louis Cyr; and The Crash Reel, a documentary about snowboarding legend Kevin Pearce’s neck injury and rehabilitation. In addition to the screenings, WFF will also host the China Canada Gateway for Film Script Competition, in which 12 Canadian writer/producer teams will compete for production financing, and hand out the second largest cash prize in Canadian film (the $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature Film). Look for the full festival schedule at WhistlerFilmFestival.com.

HOW I LIVE NOW
AND
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland Directed by Kevin Macdonald Nuclear fallout meets teen romance in Kevin Macdonald’s flawed but effective near-future drama How I Live Now. Based on the acclaimed novel by Meg Rosoff, this adaptation opens with neurotic and lippy American teen Daisy (Saorirse Ronan) travelling to the English countryside to stay with her relatives, including young cousin Isaac (The Impossible star Tom Holland). Something about the Thor Diakow picturesque setting doesn’t seem quite right — tanks file down the streets, jets scream overhead and TV news outlets are awash with insurgent attack headlines. We soon learn the world could be on the brink of WWIII as terrorists begin a UK siege that culminates in a devastating nuclear attack on London; an effectively chilling scene set well outside the city. After being initially withdrawn, Daisy soon begins to soften and strikes up a romance with handsome Edmund (George MacKay) only to be separated from him by military forces. She soon must travel with young Piper (Harley Bird) on a dangerous journey to reunite with her newfound love.
Saorirse Ronan and Harley Bird are travel partners in a strange new world. For the most part, Macdonald paints a profound and often grim portrait of an unsettling future with several outstanding scenes that linger in the mind long after the film is over. Yet, How I Live Now succumbs to familiar young adult romance tropes that often fail to match the emotional resonance of the story’s themes. However, Ronan’s powerful and unflinching portrayal of Daisy is another masterstroke for the young actress and gives the movie, along with Macdonald’s keen direction, a healthy injection of credibility.

Pull the plug on Kill Your Darlings KILL YOUR DARLINGS
Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan Directed by John Krokidas An account of a young Allen Ginsberg discovering his voice and modus operandi (and getting wrapped up in a murder in the process), John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings represents a debut feature in which an obviously talented filmmaker is still honing his craft. Arriving at Columbia University in 1943, Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe, whose eagerness to reinvent himself results in too deliberate a performance) is taken under the corruptive wing of seductive Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe as who remains one of the Allen Ginsberg.

screen’s most intriguing new presences thanks to his naturally odd, unfailingly intense bearing). Introducing Ginsberg to narcotics, revolutionary theories and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), Carr ducks cryptic mentions of an incident in Chicago. However, does it really qualify as a mystery if we can’t care less about discovering what actually happened? The film inspires just such apathy far too frequently. With the details and trajectory of this true story already dictated by history, it’s incumbent on Krokidas to inject some immediacy. Alas, the anachronistic inclusion of TV on the Radio’s music seems more like window dressing than a genuine anarchic flourish. And while explicitly declaring that “killing your darlings”— doing away with elements that you’re most attached to — is the first principle of creation, Krokidas’ film is rife with touches that seem included for his benefit rather than the good of the narrative. Furthermore, it’s rather condescending for a film to equate traditional poetic technique with fascism while constantly lapsing into convention itself. While talking a depraved game, Kill Your Darlings is largely DOA. — Curtis Woloschuk

Cadillac in the rear-view mirror of the European premium brands 2014 Cadillac CTS One auto trend that shows little sign of waning is the move towards more luxury or premium cars by manufacturers and consumers alike. As baby boomers age, they have earned the nicer things in life, and the offspring of baby boomers are getting used to the finer things in life, so more automakers are moving upscale. The Europeans do luxury and performance better than most and the Japanese luxury brands have been putting in their time to becoming a real force. But long before the Japanese, there have always been the American luxury brands, with many firsts in features and technology. Established in 1902, Cadillac is one of the oldest, along with Mercedes-Benz, and continues to be General Motors’ flagship in terms of refinement and technology. Looks The smaller Cadillac ATS was released a year ago and went on to win the North American Car of the Year award. General Motors has taken that platform and elongated it to produce the lightest mid-sized car in its class. It’s a full 173kg lighter than the benchmark BMW 5-Series it competes against, and 34kg lighter than the outgoing car. A lighter car, made of

Verdict The price of the CTS ranges from about $51,000 for the base model to $66,000 for the top premium trim level. The Vsport, high performance model is priced at almost $75,000. The Cadillac CTS is not an inexpensive car, but it offers many features like standard heated and vented leather seats, Bose stereo and push button start even on the base model. Compared to some of the other mid-sized luxury sedans it is less expensive, plus it is a worthy car for any driving enthusiast.

Perpetual Driving Self-Betterment: Because You’re Worth It B.C. racecar driver Cherie Storms told me she was taking an advanced driver training course to appease her father’s wishes. She’d been putting it off since teenagedom. That said, her father is an accomplished racecar driver and a proficient motorist, so you could argue it was an inevitability. But she had to find the desire in herself first. What followed, even she didn’t think would happen. She recently took home the championship “Every time title for the B Spec you get behind the series in her Mazwheel of a vehicle, da2 for the 2013 there’s a possibility race season. She grew up in you can change a motorsports your life or the lives household but it of others. wasn’t until she actually got behind Alexandra Straub the wheel at the driving course that her mindset changed. “I was just overwhelmed with all of the technical aspects that it takes to be a good driver,” she stated. It’s like what my grade 12 math teacher always said, “Math is not a spectator sport.”There was even a poster on the cubicle wall to remind us.
‘‘
’’
The same thing goes for driving. Except there’s no poster in the cubicle for that! We need to be an active participant, not a wallflower. Anyone who has taken advanced driving courses will know exactly what Cherie is talking about. It’s not just about knowing how to shift gears on a manual transmission without jerking the car, or parallel parking your sedan without curbing the rims. Driving is so much more. I understand that this mode of transportation is a necessity for many. And it’s something done out of convenience rather than love. Kind of like laundry or grouting the bathroom floor tiles. Then again, for others, it’s a passion. Myself included. Taking a specialized course, whether it’s a track day or a race school isn’t just for wannabe racers. It’s for everyone. And we can all learn if we have an open mind. We read to keep our mind sharp. We walk/run/ work out to keep our bodies active. We sleep to keep our bodies functioning. Why should driving be any different? Why shouldn’t we actively engage in making ourselves better drivers? Every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, there’s a possibility you can change your life or the lives of others. We might not think too much about it, but operating a vehicle is a huge responsibility. Poor driving habits, not shoulder checking, not using your signals, driving in the left lane when you’re not passing are minor details in the grand scheme of things, but have a large impact.
It’s never too late to refresh the basics and then pick up a few new good habits. For example, if you look at any of the top athletes in their sport, they’re training most of the time. They’re trying to perfect their craft, even when they’re at the top of it. I doubt Sebastian Vettel slums around in his down time, even after winning his fourth consecutive Formula1 world championship. Sure, he gets a break, but he’s constantly training to be faster and stronger. In another interview, I chatted with Izod Indy racecar driver Simona de Silvestro. She tells me that there’s really no such thing as an “off-season.” She says she trains all year long. In fact, she trains harder when she’s not always behind the wheel of a car to prepare for the upcoming races. If the pros do it, we should to. Some of the most fun I’ve had behind the wheel of a car has been at a driving school. Whether it was the three-day racing school at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the Skip Barber program, or a track day at the Mission Raceway with Morrisport Advanced Driving, or even a track program close to you, it’s a win-win. If we’re all safer drivers then the chances of accidents are minimized and we can keep our vehicles dent-free longer. And avoid going through insurance claims. The few hundred dollars it takes to enroll is of infinite worth in the long run. Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca Twitter.com/cargirlsgarage

Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny r 8FFL PG /07&.#&3 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): There’s something resembling a big red snake slithering around in your mind these days. I don’t mean that literally, of course. I’m talking about a big red imaginary snake. But it’s still quite potent. While it’s not poisonous, neither is it a pure embodiment of sweetness and light. Whether it ends up having a disorienting or benevolent influence on your life all depends on how you handle your relationship with it. I suggest you treat it with respect but also let it know that you’re the boss. Give it guidelines and a clear mandate so that it serves your noble ambitions and not your chaotic desires. If you do that, your big red snake will heal and uplift you. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): In my astrological opinion, almost nothing can keep you from getting the love you need in the coming days. Here’s the only potential problem: You might have a mistaken or incomplete understanding about the love you need, and that could interfere with you recognizing and welcoming the real thing. So here’s my prescription: Keep an open mind about the true nature of the love that you actually need most, and stay alert for the perhaps unexpected ways it might make itself available. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): “People fall so in love with their pain, they can’t leave it behind,” asserts novelist Chuck Palahniuk. Your assignment, Gemini, is to work your ass off to fall out of love with your pain. As if you were talking to a child, explain to your subconscious mind that the suffering it has gotten so accustomed to has outlived its usefulness. Tell your deep self that you no longer want the ancient ache to be a cornerstone of your identity. To aid the banishment, I recommend that you conduct a ritual of severing. Tie one side of a ribbon to a symbol of your pain and tie the other side around your waist. Then cut the ribbon in half and bury the symbol in the dirt. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): “You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again,” said painter Joan Miró. “You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life,” he added. The coming days are likely to bring you none of the former kind of experiences and several of the latter, Cancerian. It’s a numinous time in your long-term cycle: a phase when you’re likely to encounter beauty that enchants you and mysteries that titillate your sense of wonder for a long time. In other words, the eternal is coming to visit you in very concrete ways. How do you like your epiphanies? Hot

and wild? Cool and soaring? Comical and lyrical? Hot and soaring and comical and wild and cool and lyrical? LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): There’s a new genre of erotic literature: dinosaur porn. E-books like In the Velociraptor’s Nest and Ravished by the Triceratops tell tall tales about encounters between people and prehistoric reptiles. I don’t recommend you read this stuff, though. While I do believe that now is a good time to add new twists to your sexual repertoire and explore the frontiers of pleasure, I think you should remain rooted in the real world, even in your fantasy life. It’s also important to be safe as you experiment. You really don’t want to explore the frontiers of pleasure with cold-blooded beasts. Either travel alone or else round up a warm-blooded compassion specialist who has a few skills in the arts of intimacy. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): The saxifrage is a small plant with white flowers. It grows best in subarctic regions and cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The word “saxifrage” is derived from the Latin word saxifraga, whose literal meaning is “stone-breaker.” Indeed, the plant does often appear in the clefts of stones and boulders. In his poem “A Sort of a Song,” William Carlos Williams celebrates its strength: “Saxifrage is my flower that splits the rocks.” I nominate this darling little dynamo to be your metaphorical power object of the week, Virgo. May it inspire you to crack through blocks and barriers with subtle force. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): You’re not being swept along in a flood of meaningless distractions and irrelevant information and trivial wishes, right? I’m hoping that you have a sixth sense about which few stimuli are useful and meaningful to you, and which thousands of stimuli are not. But if you are experiencing a bit of trouble staying well-grounded in the midst of the frenzied babble, now would be a good time to take strenuous action. The universe will conspire to help you become extra stable and secure if you resolve to eliminate as much nonsense from your life as you can. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Sweetness is good. Sweetness is desirable. To be healthy, you need to give and receive sweetness on a regular basis. But you can’t flourish on sweetness alone. In fact, too much of it may be oppressive or numbing. I’m speaking both literally and metaphorically: To be balanced you need all of the other tastes, including saltiness, sourness, bitterness, and savoriness. From what I understand, you are headed into a phase when you’ll thrive on more bitterness and savoriness than usual. To get an idea of what I mean, meditate on what the emotional equivalents might be for bitter tastes like coffee, beer, and olives, and for savory tastes like mushrooms, cheese, spinach, and green tea.

EMPLOYMENT/EDUCATION
21
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): When you procrastinate, you avoid doing an important task. Instead, you goof off, doing something fun or simply puttering around wasting time. But what if there were a higher form of procrastination? What if you could avoid an important task by doing other tasks that were somewhat less important but still quite valuable? Here’s what that might look like for you right now: You could postpone your search for the key to everything by throwing yourself into a project that will give you the key to one small part of everything. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): In his utopian novel Looking Backward, American author Edward Bellamy wrote a passage that I suspect applies to you right now: “It is under what may be called unnatural, in the sense of extraordinary, circumstances that people behave most naturally, for the reason that such circumstances banish artificiality.” Think of the relief and release that await you, Capricorn: an end to pretending, a dissolution of deception, the fall of fakery. As you weave you way through extraordinary circumstances, you will be moved to act with brave authenticity. Take full advantage. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): “I have your back” is an American expression that could also be rendered as “I’m right behind you, ready to help and defend you” or “I’m ready to support you whenever you’ve got a problem.” Is there anyone in the world who feels that way about you? If not, now would be an excellent time to work on getting such an ally. Cosmic conditions are ripe for bringing greater levels of assistance and collaboration into your life. And if you already do have confederates of that caliber, I suggest you take this opportunity to deepen your symbiotic connection even further. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): Over a hundred countries around the world celebrate a holiday called Independence Day, memorializing a time when they broke away from another nation and formed a separate state. I encourage you to create your own personal version of this festival. It could commemorate a breakthrough moment in the past when you escaped an oppressive situation, a turning point when you achieved a higher level of autonomy, or a taboo-busting transition when you started expressing your own thoughts and making your own decisions with more authority. By the way, a fresh opportunity to take this kind of action is available to you. Any day now might be a good time to declare a new Independence Day. HOMEWORK: At what moment in your life were you closest to being perfectly content? Recreate the conditions that prevailed then. Testify at Freewillastrology.com.
