Bike to Work Week As the seasons change and Metro Vancouver residents begin spending more time indoors and less time doing physical activity, HUB: Your Cycling Connection is encouraging people across Metro Vancouver to cycle to work during HUB Bike to Work Week (Oct 28 to Nov 3). New and experienced cyclists alike will be greeted with free coffee, snacks, cycling maps and bike repairs at over 25 commuter stations along some of Metro Vancouver’s busiest bike routes. Participants can register for free online, track their progress and be eligible to win daily grand prizes. Workplaces will be pitted against each other in a friendly competition to see who can cycle and log the most trips — offering the adrenaline of competition and a dose of endorphins each day. Many fall and winter riding resources are offered on the website and in on-site workplace cycling workshops that teach what to wear, proper lighting, route planning and how to keep things dry. Love, corruption, murder and betrayal — Tosca, Puccini’s last great 19th century opera, has it all. Set in a time of political and religious upheaval, Puccini’s melodrama paints three unforgettable portraits: the fiery, purehearted Tosca; the passionate political idealist Mario; and the deeply depraved Scarpia. More than 50 voices will complement the two Toscas, Canadian-born soprano Michele Capalbo and the American Tamara Mancinising, in alternating performances of the role. All patrons who attend the Oct. 31 performance in costume will receive $10 in “Opera Bucks”, which may be used toward the purchase of a single ticket for any remaining 2013-2014 Vancouver Opera performance. For businesses that are hoping to become more bike friendly, HUB also offers Bikeability Assessments and provides customized recommendations for improvements through cost-effective facility upgrades, employee incentives and promotional techniques. Since the first HUB Bike to Work Week kicked off in 2007, the number of people choosing their bike as a transportation option has seen a 200 per cent increase and more than 8,000 people have tried cycling to work for the very first time. Revenge of the Nerd Corps Vancouver studio triumphs in animation with Slugterra By Sabrina Furminger

N

ot far from the shadow of the East Van cross, a menagerie of fantastical creatures is being conjured into existence by hundreds of modernday Dr. Frankensteins. The creations are a diverse and spooky lot. They’re pouty high school students sporting stylish hairdos and grotesque neck bolts; they’re teen spies and high-tech super-baddies; they’re slimy subterranean slugs and blaster-wielding cave trolls — and they’re all beloved by millions of children all over the world, thanks to the far-reaching powers of television, tablets, and merchandising. And the Dr. Frankensteins? They’re the digital creators — animators, compositors, editors, storyboard artists — at Nerd Corps, the Vancouver-based animation studio that’s carved out an industry niche with a one-stopshop approach to episodic animation creation. The bulk of Nerds are Vancouver Film School graduates, with an average age of 25. They wield their digital trades in two nondescript buildings; in the past year, their numbers have swelled from 225 to nearly 350. Nerd Corps is the brainchild of animation veterans Asaph “Ace” Fipke and Chuck Johnson. Their mission: to produce all aspects of animated shows under one roof. “It was very foreign at the time,” says Johnson, a character animator who used to head VFS’s

3D and visual effects division. Their first project as Nerd Corps was 2002’s Dragon Booster, for which the corps produced 39 episodes; more recently, they’ve produced entire series for Mattel, including the mega-popular Monster High and Max Steel — while also finding success with their own creative properties. “As we’ve evolved over the years, our focus is on creating global kids brands,” says Johnson. “It means creating a great show that, in the case of preschoolers, resonates and inspires and educates, and with the six to 11 demographic, excites with action and comedy.” Nerd Corps’ shows include Storm Hawks, Rated A for Awesome, League of Super Evil and 2013’s Slugterra. The latter — about the adventures of a 15-year-old boy in an underground world populated by critters that transform into ammo when shot out of a blaster — broadcasts 10 times a week on Disney XD US and is the number four action show for boys ages six to 11. Each series has its own dedicated floor with upwards of 60 artists; the bulk of the creative team is within arm’s reach. An episode can take nine months to nurture from premise to completion, and numerous episodes are in production at any one time. There’s also an interactivity department where games are developed for web and iPhones, and a burgeoning merchandising wing (the Slugterra line features action figures, blasters, plush toys, and collectible slugs). It’s not all work and no play at Nerd Corps; the culture is geared towards highquality output, but without the long hours associated with the animation industry.

“What we heard early on from people is, ‘I don’t really feel like I’m necessarily working less, because I’m working hard, but I like getting to go home and do something else.’” It’s important to keep the talent happy in a city where the digital media industry is thriving. “When we started up, we were in the mix with monstrous video game companies that were throwing around very big money and had very big incentives,” Johnson says. “We said, ‘Okay, you can go and get big money there, or you can come here and get okay money and we’re going to appreciate you as an artist and let you be effective,’ which probably doesn’t sound that glamorous, but is one of the core things that people feel good about at a job.” Although they have offices elsewhere (merchandising in LA and distribution in Toronto), the company is committed to remaining in the 604. “We grew up in BC. We started here. We’re going to stay here.” They’re also out in the community: donating computers to schools; sitting on the Vancouver Art Gallery board; providing animation workshops to at-risk Eastside youth. Another thing they’re unlikely to change? The company name, which was born during an alcohol-laced brainstorming session in 2002. “We were drinking beer and saying, “We’re a group of nerds, like a marine corps full of nerds… Let’s call it Nerd Corps!” Johnson says, laughing. And to paraphrase army recruiting posters: Nerd Corps wants you (especially if you’re an animator). “Nerd Interview Day” is Oct. 26 at the Nerd Corps headquarters. Pre-registration is required. If you’re a boy aged six to 11, chances are you’ll recognize Slugterra’s hero.

If you build it, they will animate VFS builds 3D animation studio — and 10 soundstages — in old Storyeum space By Sabrina Furminger

F

or a while there, it seemed like nothing would ever again inhabit the cavernous Gastown space built for the ill-fated tourist attraction, Storyeum. Creative minds suggested re-purposing it as a bowling alley, a movie theatre, and a homeless shelter, but all plans were scrapped. As recently as a few years ago, Storyeum seemed destined to remain a tomb. Enter the Vancouver Film School. When it first cast its gaze upon the 100,000-square-foot facility, its 3D animation and visual effects department was outgrowing its leased space in a downtown office building. “This space was ideal for us because it was a big blank canvas, and we were able to design in some amazing things that make the educational experience so much better,” said Marty Hasselbach, managing director of the 3D animation and visual effects program, during a recent tour of the campus. “We really tried to emulate a studio environment.” The new animation campus quietly opened its doors to 300 students

6

October 24 – 30, 2013

When Vancouver Film School took over the 10,000 foot Gastown facility, it could create an animation hub of its, and its 300 students, dreams. Photo courtesy VSF on August 26. It occupies roughly 44,000 square feet of the facility — more than double what it had in its previous location — and is accessed from Cordova Street. Even more spacious are the downstairs and Water Street portions which, when fully constructed, will be used by the film program and contain t10 black box sound stages and a green screen studio. (Phase two is scheduled to be complete by mid-December.) As in most animation studios (but few schools), there’s a tricked-out

chill-out lounge with computer stations, comfortable furniture, and foosball tables. “They work hard, they play hard,” said Hasselbach. “You’re here long, long hours, and this gets you ready for the long hours of the industry.” Students can store their two-wheeled rides in a designated bike room and feast in a spacious lunchroom. Where the Storyeum elevators once lowered visitors down into the performance space, there are two 72-seat theatres. Classrooms were designed with

the programs in mind. “We’ve been delivering the programs for so long, we figured out what we did and didn’t want to have in facilities,” said Hasselbach. Air conditioning units are located in hallways so that the classrooms are quiet. Courtesy plugs are available at every station (you don’t need to crawl under your desk to plug in your phone). The facility is illuminated by LED lights, many dimmable. The life-drawing room comes complete with a change room for the models. The long white corridors are lined by dozens of posters from blockbuster films. Each one is accompanied by a display card listing the VFS alumni who worked on the project. 2013’s Elysium — written and directed by VFS alumni Neill Blomkamp — featured the work of 76 grads. Perhaps the most stunning example of VFS’s effort to emulate an animation studio is the large, dimly lit room outfitted with dozens of work stations. In this studio — which could easily be mistaken for any blue chip studio around town — students take their final projects through the various stages of animation and VFX production. “We know what employers need, because we’ve been doing this for a long time and so many of our instructors are industry vets,” said Hasselbach. “This is the best way to deliver the education.”

VFS.edu/programs/3Danimation-vfx

So long, Pixar Pixar’s recent announcement that it would be shutting down its Vancouver facility made headlines earlier this month, but its departure doesn’t mean that the local animation industry is in bad shape, says Marty Hasselbach, managing director of the Vancouver Film School’s 3D animation and visual effects program. “Vancouver’s animation and VFX industries are clamouring for people,” said Hasselbach. “You get news that Pixar’s closed and people freak out, but Pixar’s a very specialized group. They don’t provide a service for major studios. The people who aren’t going back to work with them there, who are staying in Vancouver, they’re going to get jobs instantaneously.” Chuck Johnson, COO of Nerd Corps, was similarly non-plussed. “The Vancouver industry is very strong,” he said. “I know the guys down there [at Pixar]. I know they liked working in Vancouver. It was a positive thing, and from what I understand, they left for Disney internal reasons.” — Sabrina Furminger

City librarian Sandra Singh says the VPL’s digital inspiration Lab is an evolution of libraries’ original purpose: to provide access to technology and generate ideas. Doug Shanks photo

The future is creative Vancouver Public Library’s Inspiration Lab will unite creative types with digital tools By Sabrina Furminger

T

he central branch of the Vancouver Public Library is a lot of things to the community it serves: a perfect spot for a last-minute study session; a monument to human intellect; a warm place to curl up with an addictive whodunit; a photo stop on a city tour; a pink building with a lot of books. Next year, it will be all of this and something else: a digital media playground for creative Vancouverites. The playground in question is the still-gestating Inspiration Lab which, when finished, will occupy 3,000 square feet of the central branch’s third floor. Whether it’s editing a film project, recording an oral history, digitizing family photos, or publishing an electronic book, the Inspiration Lab will help its users shape and create digital masterworks. It’s a concept that has its roots in how libraries have been used since time immemorial, says Sandra Singh, the VPL’s city librarian. “We know that many creative things happen in libraries as a result of the collections and the inspiration that people find in them: books are researched; plays are written; music is composed; all sorts of ideas are generated here,” says Singh. Couple this with the fact that libraries are leaders in providing access to technology (the VPL began offering computer access in the early 1990s and internet access in the mid-1990s), and the need for the Inspiration Lab becomes crystal clear, she says. “When we look at all of the creative things that happen in libraries, and our role as a technology provider, what we start to think is, ‘what’s the next evolution of that?’ And it really is the creative digital technologies.” While it might seem like a natural next step to Singh, no other library on the planet is building an Inspiration Lab. (“No library has ever put it together into a space like this, where you have that collision of ideas and creativity and technology.”) The library foundation has been fundraising to translate its groundbreaking vision into reality, most recently

with its October 5 TOUCH Gala. It’ll be a year before Vancouverites will be able to step into the Inspiration Lab — they’re aiming for a late 2014 opening date — and get creative with digitization equipment, movie-making software, recording booths, and electronic publishing tools, or sign out a camcorder and then edit their footage in the lab — perhaps after taking a free moviemaking course facilitated by one of the library’s community partners. As a fee-free resource, the Inspiration Lab will bridge the gap between high-priced technology and citizens who might not otherwise be able to play with digital tools. “There are so many ideas to share in this city, but there are many people who don’t have access to the creative technologies that would allow them to do that,” says Singh. This is especially true for children and youth. “We know that 24 per cent of the kids in British Columbia live in poverty, and poverty doesn’t just extend to being hungry every day; it’s impoverished in all areas of life,” says Singh. The academic realm isn’t just about rote learning and report writing anymore. “Within our children, we’ve got a digital divide as well, and the Inspiration Lab will provide access and equalize the playing field for many people in the community,” she says. Down the road, Singh hopes that some of the work created in the Inspiration Lab will become part of the library’s collection. “Our collection is the collection of Vancouver, so what we’re hoping is that we can build this out and have a really unique collection of diverse items that are created by Vancouver residents,” she said. “We wouldn’t force that on them, but it would be great.”

Breaking through politics’ glass ceiling Elected women encourage more of their gender to get involved in politics

“That kind of real negative politicking, I think, is souring people and that’s leading to people being more excited about women getting elected,” said Carr. Today, women fill a third of the seats in the BC Legislature — a record 30 of 85 seats — and a quarter of those in the federal House of Commons. (A record 76 female MPs were elected in 2011.) Carr muses on why, despite a steadily increasing political presence, women continue to be underrepresented. “They have a fear that getting involved in politics is not going to be easy,” she said, “it’s going to expose them, it’s going to be difficult within their private lives.” She hopes the annual Women’s Campaign School, which she cochairs, helps would-be female political candidates overcome these fears and grow confidence. Hosted by the Canadian Women Voters Congress, last fall more than 60 students attended a

hen Vancouver City Councillor Adriane Carr told her mother back in 2000 that she wanted to run for the leadership of the BC Green Party, the initial response was hardly one of unwavering maternal support. “Why would you do that?” her mother asked. “People hate politicians.” Voters are frustrated, Carr said, with the combative politics typical of Canada and the US where elected officials are predominantly male. But that frustration could pave the way for change.

City councillor Adriane Carr, second from left, is co-chair of the Women’s Campaign School, which encourages women to get involved in politics. Also in this photo, taken at the National Korea Day ceremonies at the Four Seasons, are MLA Linda Reimer, BC international trade minister Teresa Wat and American Consul General Anne Callaghan. Martha Perkins photo two-day workshop at SFU Surrey where veteran elected officials and campaign organizers shared their knowledge with women interested in running for office or working on a campaign. This year’s “class” is Nov. 29 and 30. Raj Sihota, CWVC director, says the school has graduated more than 450 students since its inception in 1999. The goal is to demystify the political process and help women break through the proverbial “glass ceiling” that still exists in politics. “The idea was if you gave a format to women where they could support each other and learn from each other across

partisan lines, you might be able to encourage more women to dip their toe into politics.” But getting elected is only half the battle. On the job, Carr says female politicians continue to face double standards. “Women have been scrutinized in a completely prejudicial and unfair way — how they look, how their hair is done, what they wear, the demeanour of their voice. This is ridiculous that we are judging politicians on very sexist terms, and it persists.” Carr said elected females are also demeaned for their “more cooperative and generous” approach to politics. “There are

some that say, ‘You’re too nice’. Well, I’m sorry, but isn’t it time that we brought some niceness back into politics and worked more cooperatively?” Fellow campaign school cochair, MLA Linda Reid, remembers knocking on doors in her first election bid in 1991, only to be told repeatedly that “politics is not for a woman.” Reid, who has given birth to two children during her time in office, is hopeful the BC Legislature will reach gender parity within the next two elections. Her advice? Find a fabulous mentor and learn the ins and outs of the job before diving in.

Sign up Women Campaign’s School is Nov. 29 (evening) and Nov. 30 (all day) at SFU’s Surrey campus. Fees are $200 for the full event, $100 for students or the underemployed and $20 for Friday night’s opening reception. Go to WomenVoters.ca for details.

New weekly auto feature launches What does your vehicle say about you and what do you look for in a new car? Whether it’s lux style, heavy-duty performance, safety or savings, we’re bringing you the best insight and offers each week in our new Driveway feature. Our local auto businesses are essential contributors to our economy and supporters of the City of Vancouver. In addition to custom stories, Driveway showcases what’s hot on the local lots plus parts and service offers. I’m pleased to introduce our new Driveway Editor, Keith Morgan, who welcomes your input at keith. morgan@drivewaybc.ca.” — Gail Nugent, Managing director, WE Vancouver

By Keith Morgan, Driveway Editor

T

oday, we are excited to introduce Driveway — our new weekly automotive feature, designed to inform and entertain with brightly written stories from our Made-in-BC team. Zack Spencer, co-host of Canada’s highest-rated auto show Driving Television and voice of a nationally syndicated radio show, will tell you what is hot and not among the new models. Women play a decision-making role in more

than 80 per cent of car purchases; Alexandra Straub will help them make the right decision. In Near New, technical wizard Bob McHugh will pick out the best in ‘previously loved’ cars. Ian Harwood will join us soon with his column Just Trucks. Yours truly will bring you the latest news from all of the international launches and auto shows and make sure Driveway speaks to all of our readers, not just car nuts. Blair Qualey, president and CEO of the BC New Car Dealers Association, shares our enthusiasm: “The launch of Driveway is good news for readers as well as the BC auto industry, which is a $10 billion business that employs 34,000 direct and indirect jobs in the new car industry in Keith Morgan this province. “Car buyers throughout the province will now get the sort of auto news and information previously enjoyed only by residents of the larger metro areas. The breadth of the coverage will benefit new car dealerships of all brands by exposing a large new readership to their products. A knowledgeable buyer is good for all brands.”

Metro Vancouver politicians get a pay raise

etro Vancouver directors have received a 2.3 per cent increase in the meeting fees they collect – retroactive to the start of the year. Metro directors are now paid $354 for every regional district board or committee meeting they attend, up from $346 in 2012. The fees double if a meeting runs longer than four hours. The salary paid by Metro to the board chair – Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore – also rose 2.3 per cent to $70,865, while vicechair Raymond Louie is paid half that amount. All the stipends and fees are in addition to what local cities pay their mayors and councillors. The regional politicians didn’t vote on the pay hike — the increases are calculated by Metro staff according to a formula set out in a bylaw. The chair and vicechair salaries and the meeting fees are all pegged to the median of Metro Vancouver mayors’ salaries, so if several cities increase their mayors’ pay, the Metro fees also climb. Most cities recalibrate their mayors’ pay each year, some based on a similar regional median or average, and some are pegged to the negotiated increase of unionized staff. Top paid mayors in the region, according to Metro’s figures, are Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson at $152,756, Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan at $139,206,

L F A life art for

Coquitlam’s Richard Stewart at $133,741, Surrey’s Dianne Watts at $130,533 and Delta’s Lois Jackson at $128,701. Those figures all include the base salary plus car allowance and any other taxable benefits. Moore said pay for politicians’ service at the regional level can’t fall behind and Metro’s approach ensures that directors don’t directly vote on their own pay hikes. “We’ve tried to do it as fairly and transparently as we can and this is what we’ve come up with,” he said.

Moore said the calculation based on mayors’ pay is performed once every three years. For the next two years, the meeting fees and Metro salaries will instead climb by the rate of inflation. Metro Vancouver paid out a total of $870,000 in remuneration to its directors last year, plus $60,690 in expenses. Metro directors fees have climbed 40 per cent over the past five years, from $253 per meeting in 2008. — Jeff Nagel

THE DISH If you haven’t been to Mamie Taylor’s yet, then you are missing out on a seriously fun experience. The newest in a line of eateries to open in the Chinatown/Main Street neighbourhood, Mamie is all about contemporary American comfort food, with interesting twists. A recent favourite was the hearty plate of white cheddar grits ($13), topped with lots and lots of grilled mushrooms, crunchy bread bits, scallions, and a perfect slow-cooked egg yolk that breaks with runny abandon at the prick of a fork. Vegetarians would enjoy this dish, as long they don’t mind the taxidermy that dots the vertical landscape. Pair it with the house cocktail ($9), a refreshing combination of scotch, lime juice, angostura bitters and ginger beer. Other standouts include the veal tongue Montecristo sandwich and the fried chicken dinner. MamieTaylors.ca

here are hobby chefs and restaurant chefs. And then there are competition chefs, who are another breed altogether. When the title of BC Top Chef is on the line, the beast comes out. On Oct. 27 and 28, the BC Chefs’ Association presents the 2013 BC Top Chef Competition and the Asian BC Top Chef Competition as part of the Connect Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The BCCA has been organizing local competitions since 1958. Each competition round features a black box challenge where chefs have 45 minutes to make an entrée from start to finish with the ingredients they’ve been given. The last round consists of three finalists who battle it out for an award-winning appetizer and the title of BC Top Chef. These competition chefs usually fly under the radar even though their skills and talent can rival those of celebrity chefs. Not to say who is more deserving, because they both are, but let’s shed some spotlight on the dark horses. Keith Pears from e.b.o. Restaurant at the Delta Burnaby is a familiar face at BCCA competitions. He trains under executive chef Daniel Craig who is a future Bocuse d’or Canada competitor and another underrated chef in the city. As cliché as this sounds, the hotel restaurant is a hidden gem. I’ve tried their food at events, competitions and, of course, at the restaurant and their rice crusted tuna with avocado, apple, crab and soy appetizer and rack of lamb entrée are long-time favourites. William Tse is another well-seasoned competition chef at the BCCA events. He competed in BC Top Asian Chef and Roasted Chef of the Year at last year’s show, and this year he’s competing for the BC Top Chef title. Formerly at Sandbar, he is now

the executive chef at BC Place, taking over for Ryan Stone, the Bocuse d’Or Canada 2011 representative. Tse also defended his title at the Master Chef Competition at the Fraser Valley Food Show this year. When it comes to competitions, the food is different. It is not restaurant food although it still has to be palatable, present well, and taste good. From garnishes, knife skills, sanitization, and creative use of ingredients, these chefs are being judged on more than their final plate. You may be surprised with where these chefs come from too. Hotels, golf courses and chain restaurants house some of the city’s top chefs, and as Rob Feenie proves, creating the one right dish can be worth millions…. Literally. This year’s BC Top Chef competitors are Chris Remington, Penticton Lakeside Resort; Corey Fields, Fraser River Lodge; Valentino Pereira, UBC; Froilan Alejo, Tsawwassen Golf Course; Jonathan Gee, Pretty Estates Resort; Kevin Wall, Joey Restaurant Group; Jaimeet Kathuria, PTI Group; Patrick Fitzgerald, Golden Eagle Golf Club; Ryan Mah, Tractor Foods; Timothy Tejuco, Joey Broadway; Keith Pears, EBO; Sic Kim, Damso Korean Cuisine; and William Tse, BC Place. Find Mijune at Food Day on Oct. 24 with Project Chefs where she will be helping kids cook, and at the 2nd Annual Charity Long Table Event at BMW Langley catered by Joy Road Catering on Oct. 25 (four courses with pine pairings for $ 95/ person). She will also be judging BC Top Chef competition and BC Asian Top Chef Competition at the Connect Show Oct. 27 – 28 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. All welcome to watch and cheer on your favourite chefs! Find out more about Mijune at FollowMeFoodie.com or follow her on Twitter @followmefoodie.

sk anyone in the local wine trade about John Clerides, the owner of Davie Street’s Marquis Wine Cellars for the last 27 years, and I guarantee the first thing they’ll do is give you a smirk and a light chuckle. Don’t get me wrong; the guy’s no joke. In fact, he’s one of the most dogged, brilliant wine minds in the province; always travelling, digging and sourcing new, amazing wines to bring to our shores. What that initial reaction will be a reflection of, is that John has always been one of the most plainspoken guys we know, and for years has been a thorn in the side of the pols and bureaucrats responsible for liquor laws and policy that have had all of us tossing out words like ‘archaic’ and ‘dracoJohn Clerides has nian’ ad nauseum for long been an outdecades. spoken critic of BC’s Whether hammer‘archaic’ liquor laws.

ing away via Twitter, speaking on panels or, really, talking to anyone who will listen, it’s because of John (and people like him) tirelessly beating the drum that we’re finally starting to see long overdue change in the local liquor policy realm. I dropped by Marquis to chat with John the other day so I could get a personal tour of his recently-expanded store, now boasting 3,000 square feet, a 3,000-bottle temperature-controlled cellar, and a 16-bottle wine-dispensing machine offering customers the chance to sample the latest staff picks. He’s looking toward teaming up with Benton Brothers Fine Cheese to offer nibbles on Fridays and Saturdays so folks can really take those wine samples for a spin. While wines are organized by country, there are also sections devoted to style (crisp whites, rich reds, etc.) and even by random subjects like ‘date night’ or particular food pairings. The updated store is now even more of a genuine, fleshed-out example of John’s passions. Not just well-sourced wines that offer great value and a story behind each label, but a place that celebrates the culture of wine on many dynamic, interactive levels. Do swing by and dive into the experience. I asked John to share a couple recent favourites that you should look for and, as always, he didn’t disappoint.

Viña Gormaz 2012 Verdejo | Rueda, Spain | $18 | Marquis Wine Cellars Oh man, this is the epitome of sunshine in a glass! A cavalcade of grapefruit, lime, pomelo and peaches with a good handful of rocks thrown in for good measure. When I asked John what he liked about this particular bottle, he waxed on about its “rich, oily texture,” how it’s “a perfect match for seafood and sushi” and that it’s downright refreshing.

Bodegas Carchelo 2011 ‘C’ | Jumilla, Spain | $18.90 | Marquis Wine Cellars I think I’ve found my go-to wine for the winter! This dark and brooding trinity of Monastrell, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon exudes warmth and character, folding layer upon layer of cocoa, espresso, currants, thyme, violets and basil. The tannins are wonderfully polished and integrated. It’s the kind of wine where you’ll notice a little extra something wonderful each time you go back to the glass. John notes that it’s a “harmonious blend with a good delineation of flavours,” each grape variety offering a key part of the puzzle. Marquis Wine Cellars is located at 1034 Davie in Vancouver and at Marquis-Wines.com

Deadline for depreciation reports coming in December By Michael LaPorte, CRP, AACI, P. App.

On Dec. 13, 2011, the B.C. Government created the regulation related to depreciation reports, affecting all strata corporations in B.C. with five units or greater. This regulation requires all regulated strata corporations formed on or before Dec. 14, 2011 to either have a Depreciation Report completed

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

by Dec. 13, 2013, or self-exempt through a 75 per cent vote of owners at either an annual general meeting or special general meeting. Newer strata corporations will have longer to comply, with their depreciation report deadline being six months after their newly formed strata corporation’s second AGM. A depreciation report is a study which determines the funding needs of a strata corporation, related to the common components of the property which are the responsibility of the strata corporation to maintain or repair, and which require repairs and maintenance work less often than annually.

The majority of B.C.’s strata corporations have still not had their report completed. Many strata corporations have chosen to self-exempt, whether on the principle that they would like to defer indefinitely, or perhaps in the hope that with greater experience and qualified individuals the price of these reports may come down, or because they are running out of time. With the deadline approaching, many strata corporations will opt for having a self-exemption vote, even if they wish to have the report completed in the near future. A vote to selfexempt could be presented, along with a resolution to fund and complete the depreciation report in the new year. If your strata corporation has already completed their report or deferred through self-exemption, you have met the current legislated requirements. However, if your strata corporation has still not addressed this issue, the time is now. For the full story, visit www.bclocalnews.com/business/ realestate/228659901.html

White Rock luxury and gorgeous views at Saltaire By Kerry Vital

White Rock is one of the Lower Mainland’s most popular cities, with its own character and unique style. Now developer Ledingham McAllister is putting its own stamp on the area with Saltaire, its 36-unit condominium development just moments from the beach. “White Rock is where people come to play,” says Ledingham McAllister Senior VicePresident of Marketing and Design Manuela Mirecki. “Buyers at Saltaire live where others

play.” Built in a contemporary West Coast style, there’s plenty of curb appeal at Saltaire. Cultured stone and heavy timber elements combine with elegant brick and wood detailing to present a beautiful picture. “We wanted to maximize the amount of windows and view vistas,” Mirecki says. “It’s built in an L-shape, which maximizes the number of corner homes.” The one- and three-bedroom homes range from approximately 720 to 1,634 square feet, with nine-foot ceilings and engineered hardwood flooring in the main living areas. Huge windows let the light pour in, making your home feel expansive and open. “You can sit in your living room and see Semiahmoo Bay,” Mirecki says. “It really brings the outdoors in.” The largest two-bedroom-and-den homes, which Mirecki calls “the rotunda homes” are

particularly amazing, with seriously gorgeous interior architecture and views. “You get unbelievable sweeping vistas and decks in these homes,” says Mirecki. There are also exposed wood beams in a sunburst pattern on the ceiling and an incredible amount of space to relax or entertain. Among the gorgeous features you’ll find at Saltaire are gourmet kitchens with stainlesssteel appliances, generous breakfast bars and islands and your choice of two designer colour schemes, Classic and Contemporary. The Classic scheme includes Shaker cabinetry in a classic white finish, complemented by white quartz stone countertops and a Bianco Venatino marble backsplash. The Contemporary scheme features flat-panel walnut finish cabinetry and natural grey quartz stone countertops with a gloss-white ripple effect backsplash. “Everyone comments on the kitchen,” says

Mirecki. In the bathrooms, you’ll find porcelain tile flooring and a modern rectangular undermount sink. Some homes include frameless glass showers with a porcelain tile surround, while the luxurious master ensuite holds a soaker tub. Every home includes a large outdoor space with stunning views of Boundary Bay or the North Shore mountains. “Our sales manager says she’s never received more compliments on a project before,” says Mirecki. “We’ve had literally thousands of people through our display suites.” Saltaire is located just off the White Rock boardwalk, so residents can easily take advantage of everything the area has to offer. Whether you’re in the mood for shopping, dining or recreation activities, you’re within walking distance. You’ll also have easy access to Highway 99. “You’re right in the middle of a pedestrianfriendly walking district,” Mirecki says. Ledingham McAllister has a reputation for quality homes and great value, and has been family-owned and operated for 108 years. Mirecki notes that buyers at Saltaire are assured of great customer service and excellent construction. Homes at Saltaire start at $339,900 and are ready to move into this November. For more information, visit www.ledmac.com/saltaire, call 604-560-1656 or visit the presentation centre at 1418 Johnston Road, White Rock, open daily except Friday between noon and 5 p.m.

Housing market rebound to extend into 2014

T

he British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) released its 2013 Fourth Quarter Housing Forecast Tuesday. BC Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) residential sales are forecast to increase 6 per cent to 71,700 units this year, before increasing a further 6.3 per cent to 76,200 units in 2014. The five-year average is 74,600 unit sales, while the ten-year average is 86,800 unit sales. A record 106,300 MLS® residential sales were recorded in 2005. “Consumer demand has bounced back after waning for most of 2012,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA chief economist. “With higher

interest rates on the horizon, many potential homebuyers are choosing to lock in a mortgage sooner rather than later. However, rather than signaling a return to frenetic home buying activity and accelerating markets, consumer demand is simply transitioning back to its long-term average.” The average MLS® residential price forecast for the province has been revised upward from a 3.3 to a 4.3 per cent increase to $537,100 this year, as a result of stronger than expected market conditions in Vancouver. The average MLS® residential price in BC is forecast to increase a further 2.1 per cent to 548,200 in 2014.

HARD IN THE PAINT: Seven highly regarded Vancouver graffiti artists tackled a 200 ft. wall outside Chip Wilson’s Point Grey Road waterfront home last weekend. The project, initiated by Wilson and curated by Graeme Berglund (Black & Yellow Gallery, The Cheaper Show), challenged the artists to deter unwanted graffiti with commissioned art. Redford shines in survival tale

A caustic visit to Disneyland ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW

Starring Robert Redford Directed by J.C. Chandor

Robert Redford is the only actor in a movie about being lost at sea. Chandor has created something truly rare in a film era rife with tiresome expository dialogue, frantic editing and artificial special effects. All Is Lost is a masterful, slow-burning homage to the intelligently executed survival stories that were popular decades ago; what’s even more refreshing is how Redford manages to churn out one of the finest performances of his storied career by immersing himself in a mysterious character that allows his weathered, penetrating face to do most of the talking.

VA W NC ES OU T VE R

He may be 77 years old but Robert Redford tackles perhaps his most challenging and physically daunting role yet in the epic survival story All Is Lost. A far cry from his wordy feature debut Margin Call, director J.C. Chandor has crafted a mesmerizing tale with only one actor on screen throughout the entire film and a 31-page script (most are over 100). Thor Diakow The true testament to the captivating narrative is the fact that the movie is virtually dialogue free; it’s just Redford, on a boat, lost at sea. After a collision with a shipping container in the middle of the Indian Ocean seriously damages his yacht, our nameless protagonist must summon all of his resourcefulness to stay alive and find some way of getting rescued. Despite uttering only a handful of sentences, Redford displays an incredible amount of depth and quiet resolve as he devises an endless string of life-saving tactics and faces all manner of disastrous pitfalls.

ND

ALL IS LOST

for the enchantingly perverse narrative that follows: while trying to play family man, the sad, schlubby Jim finds himself tempted by two underage Dis-nymphs, seduced by a wicked witch and relegated to the role of pawn in a sinister plot sponsored by Siemens. Tomorrowland’s retro-futurist details and It’s a Small World’s cavernous realms lend themselves exceptionally well to the film’s black and white lensing. Furthermore, turning such readily familiar landmarks into makeshift sets leaves viewers constantly marvelling at the resourcefulness and intestinal fortitude required by Moore to pull off this outrageously subversive stunt. Admittedly, much like a rundown amusement park ride, the exhilaration here can largely be attributed to the rickety nature of the structure and the sense it could collapse at any second. But even when the film inevitably goes off the rails in its final reels, it falls to pieces in fine style. — Curtis Woloschuk

Starring Roy Abramsohn, Elena Schuber Directed by Randy Moore Forsaking permission and permits in favour of shooting entirely guerrilla style on the grounds of Disney’s theme parks, writer-director-provocateur Randy Moore transforms a conventional family vacation into a caustic, kaleidoscopic fever dream. Exhibiting a surrealist’s eye for uncovering context-altering angles from which to shoot the Magic Kingdom and its denizens, Moore transforms the purported “happiest place on Earth” into an unrelenting horror show stocked with grotesques. On the last day of a holiday with his perpetually aggravated wife Emily (Elena Schuber) and two demanding kids, Jim (Roy Abramsohn) is unceremoniously fired over the phone. His emasculation doesn’t end there, as he’s next locked on the hotel balcony by his son who wants to enjoy a morning cuddle alone with Emily. This Oedipal overture sets the tone

Art Gallery to let us into Forbidden City ‘Monumental’ exhibit of Chinese artifacts to open next October By Martha Perkins

W

hen the doors of China’s Forbidden City parted and Dr. Chen Shen was invited to walk in, it wasn’t the gilded splendour of downtown the Imperial Palace that surprised him the most. Nor was it the vast glory of the emperors’ walled kingdom. No, what surprised the Royal Ontario Museum senior curator the most was how easily he could identify with these earthbound “sons of heaven”. They became more real to him as people the more he learned about their daily lives. The resulting exhibit — The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors, which opens in Toronto next March before it crosses the country to Vancouver next October — is an “up close and personal” view of life inside the royal palace. Five hundred years ago, the only way a common man could gain entrance into the emperor’s life was by agreeing to become a eunuch and dedicating his life to serving the family. No one else in China could use the royal yellow colour or decorate with dragon motifs. The emperor’s rule was absolute and inviolate. The roughly 200 pieces — textiles, paintings, works on paper, ceramics — that Dr. Shen has chosen from the 1.2 million artifacts in the Royal Museum’s collection have never been seen in North America before. Eighty have never left the Forbidden City. Some of the pieces in the Vancouver exhibit won’t even make it as far as Toronto. “What did they do during their private times? How did the prince and princesses play? What did they eat? The answers will be revealed [in the exhibit],” Dr. Shen said at Monday morning’s press conference to announce the VAG exhibit. Adjectives such as “monumental,” “re-

markable” and “rare” were used to give a sense of the honour about to be bestowed on the host city. “For decades I’ve wanted to provide people of the west with opportunities to understand Chinese culture,” said Robert Ho, the Vancouver resident whose eponymous foundation is a major sponsor of the exhibit. “Vancouver is seen as a gateway to Asia but it’s also a crossroad for culture, an economic and logistical hub. I salute the VAG for taking on this outstanding project.” Fang Zhi, the executive vice-president of CNOOC, another major sponsor, said that during the governor-general’s recent visit to China, a new saying was coined: “This fall is a Canadian fall in Beijing.” It looks like the saying will hold true next year as well. “Forbidden City tells the story of China’s past and spreads our presence through what we’ve learned from the past, guiding us forward,” he said. Premier Christy Clark, who’s about to embark on her fourth trade mission to Asia, says the cultural and economic ties between BC and China are “profound.” Vancouver has the most Asian society outside Asia, she said, and that identity is “very much who we are. I cannot think of any place in the world where this could be felt more deeply.” She has been to the Forbidden City and hopes that every school child in the area will get to travel to the gallery to learn about this aspect of Chinese culture. “We are bound by our ties to China, our deep friendship with China. We are an outward looking place; we want to be the most international city on earth.” Mayor Gregor Robertson (who was given a thumbs up by Fang Zhi for his greetings in Chinese) said that he has been talking with Robert Ho about the need for an Asian heritage centre in Vancouver. “We are the confluence of these cultures,” the mayor said, adding that the gallery building is being considered for such a site. The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors will be at the Vancouver Art Gallery from Oct. 18, 2014 to Jan. 11, 2015.

Asset protection lawyer offers three steps to take now

n today’s tech world, you really can live forever, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Many of your online accounts — from automatic bill payments to eBay — may remain active after you pass away unless you take steps to ensure they don’t, says attorney Hillel Presser, author of Financial Self-Defense (Revised Edition). Automatic bill payments, for example, can theoretically keep tapping your bank account long after you’re gone or, at least, until your money is. “It’s important to make sure your online bank and shopping accounts, even your social media, can be closed out, or that your loved ones are authorized to access them,” Presser says. “You may ask, ‘Why would I care if I’m gone?’ Because it can create real headaches, and more heartache, for your family.” Bank and shopping accounts will be vulnerable to identity theft, which would affect your estate if someone opens credit cards in your name. You might have valuable intellectual property, such as domain names. There’s the sentimental stuff — photos and emails — that your family may want as a remembrance of you, and the libraries of music and eBooks, which may represent a considerable investment on your part. “The problem is, even if you provide a family member with all of your accounts, log-ins and passwords, they may not be legally allowed to access them,” Presser says. “In many cases, they may be

violating the accounts’ terms of service or violating privacy and computer fraud laws. Some countries have laws governing online materials, but they’re different and which of your accounts are covered depends on where the provider is located.” What can you do to ensure your family isn’t left with a virtual nightmare after your passing? Presser offers these tips: • Create a list of all of your accounts, including log-in names, passwords, and answers to security questions. Your list will need to be securely stored. Since you’ll need to update it regularly as you add accounts or change passwords, it will be easiest if you keep the list on your computer in a passwordprotected folder. Some versions of Windows allow you to create protected folders, but you may need to get third-party software to do this, such as freeAxCrypt. Remember to create a backup of your list, whether it’s on a jump drive or printed out on paper. Store the backup in a secure place such as a safety deposit box. Do not put password information in your will, which is a public document. • If you have a Google account, set up the new inactive account manager. In May, Google became the first site to give users an option for choosing what becomes of their content if they should become debilitated or die. Under the profile button, click “Account,” scroll down to “Account Management,” and you’ll find instructions for “Control what happens to your account when you stop using Google.” You can select how long the account should be inactive before your plans are set into motion; choose to whom you want to offer content, such as YouTube videos, Gmail, Google+ posts, Blogger and Picasa web albums, or whether it should simply be deleted. • Appoint a digital executor. Perhaps the simplest way to ensure your online life is taken care of is to appoint a digital executor — a tech-savvy person who will be willing and able to carry out your wishes. Authorize the person to access your inventory of log-in information and spell out what you want done with each account, whether it’s providing access or deleting it. The digital world has grown and transformed so rapidly, the law hasn’t kept up, which makes managing your digital afterlife challenging, Presser says. “Until there are more consistent laws and procedures governing this area, it’s best to plan ahead, leave clear instructions and be sure you have a list of accounts where your estate lawyer or a loved one can access it,” he says. “It will make a world of difference to your survivors.” Hillel L. Presser’s firm represents individuals and businesses in establishing comprehensive asset protection plans. He is a graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Management and Nova Southeastern University’s law school, and serves on Nova’s President’s Advisory Council. He is a former adjunct faculty member for law at Lynn University. AssetProtectionAttorneys.com

he Whistler Readers and Writers Festival, which began with 20 people in Stella Harvey’s living room 12 years ago, has now grown to 400 and fills ballrooms at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. The growth might have come from putting attention-grabbing headliners such as Will Ferguson, Patrick DeWitt, Lisa Moore and Jian Ghomeshi in conversation with each other. Or it might be because the festival was built on boosting lesser known artists — gaining renown as a place to discover authors in your own backyard. Either way, it was packed all three days. From the sold-out skills workshops to the themed panel discussions, here are some of the most thoughtprovoking comments to come out of last weekend’s event:

Welcome to the driver’s seat

In a two-hour drive, the only time I dropped the anchors was when one of Amsterdam’s kazillion cyclists cut in front of me. Keith Morgan

The BMWi electric car powered its way with ease around city streets and along picturesque Dutch canals.

KEITH MORGAN

The future is electric AMSTERDAM – BMW has joined the race for the electric car dollar. On the evidence of two days driving the funky-looking all-electric i3 through the narrow streets of old Amsterdam and alongside the picturesque canals of rural Holland, the German manufacturer may have a winner. For starters, it is simply great fun to drive. The lithium-ion battery, encased in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, provides enough instant zap to the electric motor to propel the car smoothly to 100 klicks in less than eight seconds. Left the stopwatch

at home, but counting “one-and-two etc.” to count seconds, my lips barely mouthed “six” before the speedo leapt from 80 to 120 km/h while passing. It handles beautifully at any speed and hugs the road; thanks to the technology-laden aluminum platform, that gives it a very low centre of gravity. Turns on a Euro too, as we found during the many U-turns made on blocked streets. Of course, F1 take-offs will suck the battery dry somewhat more quickly but you need not be a snail in the so-called Comfort mode to achieve the advertised 160 kilometres range on a full

Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny r 8FFL PG 0DUPCFS

Editor’s note: The following horoscope incorrectly ran for the week of Oct. 17 instead of Oct. 24. We apologize for the error. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): “I’m greedy,” says painter David Hockney, “but I’m not greedy for money — I think that can be a burden — I’m greedy for an exciting life.” The cosmos is now giving you the go-ahead to cultivate Hockney’s style of greed. Make sure you formulate an intention to seek out thrills that educate and inspire you rather than those that scare you and damage you. It’s up to you which kind you attract. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): French philosopher Simone Weil described the following scene: “Two prisoners in adjoining cells communicate with each other by knocking on the wall. The wall is the thing which separates them but is also their means of communication.” This is a useful metaphor for the current state of one of your important alliances. That which separates you also connects you. But is it time to create a more direct link. Is it possible to bore a hole through the barrier so you can create a more intimate exchange? GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): “I had tended to view waiting as mere passivity,” says author Sue Monk Kidd. “When I looked it up in my dictionary, however, I found that the words ‘passive’ and ‘passion’ come from the same Latin root, pati, which means ‘to endure.’ Waiting is thus both passive and passionate. It’s a vibrant, contemplative work... It involves listening to disinherited voices within, facing the wounded

Thursday, October 24, 2013 WE Vancouver holes in the soul, the denied and undiscovered, the places one lives falsely.” Are you devoted enough to refrain from leaping into action for now? Are you strong enough to bide your time? CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): “Venice is to the man-made world what the Grand Canyon is to the natural one,” said travel writer Thomas Swick. American author Truman Capote chimed in that “Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs at one go.” I bring this up, Cancerian, because even if you don’t make a pilgrimage to Venice, I expect that you will soon have the chance, metaphorically speaking, to consume an entire box of chocolate at one go. Nibble slowly. Assume that each bite will offer a distinct new epiphany. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): Do you have any interest in reworking — even revolutionizing — your relationship with the past? Cosmic forces will be on your side if you attempt any of the following actions: 1. Forgive yourself for your former failures and missteps. 2. Make atonement to anyone who you hurt out of ignorance. 3. Reinterpret your life story to account for the ways that more recent events have changed the meaning of what happened long ago. 4. Resolve old business as thoroughly as you can. 5. Feel grateful for everyone who helped make you who you are today. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): “As a bee seeks nectar from all kinds of flowers, seek teachings everywhere,” advises the Tibetan Buddhist holy text, the Dzogchen Tantra. Be a student 24 hours a day — even while you’re sleeping. (Maybe you could go to school in your dreams.) Regard every experience as an opportunity to learn something new and unexpected. Be ready to rejoice in all the revelations, both subtle and dramatic, that will nudge you to adjust your

theories and change your mind. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Don’t you wish your friends and loved ones would just somehow figure out what you want without you having to actually say it? Here’s a news bulletin: IT AIN’T GOING TO HAPPEN! EVER! That’s why I recommend that you simply tell people pointblank what you’re dreaming about and yearning for. They may or may not be able to help you reach fulfillment, but at least they will be in possession of the precise information they need to make an informed decision. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Scorpios are obsessive, brooding, suspicious, demanding, and secretive, right? Well, no, actually. I think that’s a misleading assessment. It’s true that some Scorpios are dominated by these qualities. But my research shows that those types of Scorpios are generally not attracted to reading my horoscopes. My Scorpios tend instead to be passionately focused, deeply thoughtful, smartly discerning, intensely committed to excellence, and devoted to understanding the complex truth. These are all assets that are especially important to draw on right now. The world has an extraordinarily urgent need for the talents of you evolved Scorpios. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): “If you’re in pitch blackness, all you can do is sit tight until your eyes get used to the dark.” That helpful advice appears in Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami. Now I’m passing it on to you, just in time for your cruise through the deepest, darkest phase of your cycle. When you first arrive, you may feel blind and dumb. Your surroundings might seem impenetrable and your next move unfathomable. But don’t worry. Refrain from drawing any conclusions. Cultivate an empty mind and an innocent heart. You will

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): Right now you have a genius for escaping, for dodging, for eluding. That could be expressed relatively negatively or relatively positively. I don’t recommend that you abscond from boring but crucial responsibilities. You shouldn’t ignore or stonewall people whose alliances with you are important to keep healthy. On the other hand, I encourage you to fly, fly away from onerous obligations that give you little in return. Blow off limitations that are enforced by neurotic habits, and I will celebrate your departure from energy-draining situations that manipulate your emotions.
