2013 PRIDE GUIDE

WELCOME As Tourism Vancouver says, “What started as a courageous and peaceful protest in 1978 has become one of the most spirited and well-attended celebrations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride.” For many people — and we’re talking upwards of an estimated 650,000 spectators — the August 4 parade is the highlight of the Vancouver Pride Festival. But as we show in the following pages, the festival is much more than a parade. From June 19 to the culminating it-ain’t-over-till-it’s-over parties on the Monday of the August civic weekend — not to mention the Queer Arts Festival and Queer Film Festival in midAugust — this city will be wearing its pride on its sleeve (or sometimes when it’s wearing nothing at all...) Enjoy!

Stay Loud. Stay Proud. www.choicesmarkets.com

PROFILE: BRANDON TIMMERMAN

“We are one giant family”

M

y story begins with an ending. It was an unhappy ending that brought our community together. Three years ago, a dear friend of mine took their own life after being faced with an incredible amount of ignorance and hate. In the face of this loss, I realized that, as personal as my experience was, I was not alone. My friend’s life could have been saved if there was less hate in our community. What we call love, others call sinful, shameful, and inappropriate. As a result, our love was met with hate. People in my school, community, and around the world are being bullied, beaten, and harassed for refusing to hide who they truly are.

My world was shattered by the loss of my friend, but my heart crumbled when people began coming forward with stories of being shamed in grocery stores, threatened in schools, and attacked for their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Our community came together and said, “enough is enough.” It was time for a change. I created an online support group formerly called “Fight Homophobia in Brockville,” now called “Fight Homophobia and Transphobia in Brockville,” to create visibility and awareness. To show people that we are not alone. Within hours, 300 people joined the group wanting to create change in our community. Just over a month later, Brockville had its first Pride Parade with an attendance of over 400 people. The following year, the city unanimously proclaimed this Pride Week; which featured a drag night, cosmic bowling, a PFLAG meeting, a flag raising ceremony, queer friendly church services, and the 2nd annual Pride Parade. This attracted more than 700 people, we are currently expecting more than a thousand people for the 3rd annual Pride Parade. 14

Growing up in a rural community, wedged between military towns in small-town Ontario, I am overwhelmed with Pride in my city for embracing the LGBTQ community in such a significant way. Stores have begun proudly displaying the rainbow flag, our local women’s shelter has started creating policies to support trans* identified people, and LGBTQ people are starting to feel safe in their homes and community. I remember the first Pride Parade I organized when I was 16 years old, and what I felt that day. I felt a sense of belonging. Regardless of what happened during those other 364 days of the year, on this day, we are one giant family — a giant Queertastic family. Brandon Timmerman is a Grand Marshall for the 2013 Pride Parade.

QUEER FILM FESTIVAL Twenty-five years old. Wow. It’s hard to imagine that the ever-youthful Vancouver Queer Film Festival could be celebrating such an amazing milestone. That’s 25 years of showcasing some of the best movies that contemplate and celebrate this fascinating community. Highlights of this year’s festival, which runs August 15 to 25, include • the first-ever Focus on India celebrating the 100th anniversary year of Indian Cinema. Includes the Canadian premiere of Queens! PROFILE: MOMS OF PFLAG VANCOUVER

K

arin Lind, Aideen McKenna and Susan Harman have at least one thing in common: each of them is the mother of a gay son. For over 10 years, Karin, Aideen and Susan have volunteered with PFLAG Vancouver and have learned the challenges of families struggling to accept family members because of beliefs about what is ‘normal.’

At about the same age as Karin’s boy, Aideen’s son told his mother that he would “never have a wife or be a daddy” because he knew he was “not like other boys”. He said that he was letting her know so that she wouldn’t be disappointed in him later. Aideen hopes that “the day is coming when there will be no exclusion based on judgmental notions about what is ‘normal’.”

That word ‘normal’ resonates with Karin, who realized that her little boy was suicidal after reading a poem he wrote in Grade 4. Karin sought help, and her son grew up to accept his sexuality. Now she works hard to create a society in which no child suffers despair.

PFLAG meets regularly, welcoming anyone with questions and concerns about LGBT issues. “We work toward a healthy atmosphere in which it’s ‘normal’ to be who you are,” says Susan, who is a retired teacher, enjoys conducting workshops centering on LGBT issues in secondary school and adult ESL classes.

QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL This year’s curated visual arts exhibition, community art show, innovative performing arts events, and inspiring workshops run from July 24 to August 9. Many events take place at the Roundhouse community centre in Yaletown.

If you want any proof about how important the Queer Arts Festival is to Vancouver, consider what happened when, this past April, the federal government announced that it was withdrawing its funding to the Pride in Art Society.

Don’t miss the highlyanticipated world premiere of Canada’s first lesbian opera, When the Sun Comes Out, commissioned by QAF, and its most far-reaching and exciting Queen by visual art exhibition to date, Claude Perreault “TransgressionNow”, curated by Paul Wong and Glenn Alteen. QAF is a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary, three-week professional festival that Go to QueerArtsFestival.com for details. celebrates the unique creative expression of Queer visual and performing artists. Within days, the public outcry was so loud and proud that Heritage Minister James Moore announced he was restoring 75 per cent of the society’s funding for the event.

Dr. Charity Siu and Dr. Philip Barer would like to thank the community for all their support and for showing off their beautiful smiles with PRIDE!

PROFILE: THE EMPRESS OF CANADA

I

n 1958, a man stood on the steps of the Vancouver Courthouse protesting the lack of equality in Canada for gays and lesbians — and not one person stopped to hear him speak. That man then did something that, in those days, shocked people to their core. He put on a dress. On August 15, 1958 a pioneer of our LGBTQ community in Canada took a stand for all, and for the first time people stopped and listened to him. He had a voice. He used that voice to start the letterwriting campaign that brought him friendships with Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Tommy Douglas, and resulted in the decriminalization of homosexuality. In the 55 years that have followed, Ted Northe organized and sponsored the first Pride March in Canada (1963); created the oldest continuously-running LGBTQ organization in Canada, the Courts of Canada (1964); started the first gay businessman’s guild (1970) and the

22

first gay sports league in Canada (1974); and co-founded the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society (1975), the first LGBT First Nations Group in the country, and numerous other programs. A thorn in the side of modern society, Mr. Northe was accused of propagating the “gay agenda” through his supposed “gay mafia” — dubbed “Ted Northe and his lavender hill mob” by the Vancouver Sun and Province in 1970. Mr. Northe has held the title of Empress of Canada for 50 years, and is the only currently reigning empress of Mexico (Ensenada). In 1996, Mr. Northe signed an accord with the courts of the United States, creating an International Court System. In his lifetime Northe has been a leader in the fight against the AIDS Epidemic in the 1980s and has dedicated himself wholly to the advancement of rights for the LGBT community. He has been a driving force in defining the modern LGBT Community and Human Rights Movement in Canada as we know it today.
