With the move of Hootsuite’s head office to the neighbourhood, bringing over 300 employees to the area and plans for a technology and incubation centre down the street at Main and Hastings, tech giants and start-ups alike are migrating out of Vancouver’s business districts and in-turn bringing residents in the technology space along with them. The animated strip is attracting both businesses and homebuyers in the industry for a host of reasons including its preservation of independent shops and unique cafes and diners. Adding to the appeal is the proximity to the financial district which is less than a five-minute cab ride away, making it central enough for business transactions. With avant-guard, automotive-inspired design, Cressey Development Group’s Meccanica project, located on First and Quebec, was created with a software/tech-type buyer in mind. “These are the city’s trailblazers. They gravitate towards up-and-coming neighbourhoods for both work and play – 10 years ago they were interested in Gastown and now they are moving into new pockets of the city and have landed on Main Street,” says Hani Lammam, vice president of Acquisition and Development for Cressey. “They are attracted to its independent, non-commercial nature.” As the city’s technology scene further develops, with Facebook and Amazon planting their roots in the coming months, Lammam expect an increasing number of tech-types will move into this area. “The authenticity of the area lends itself to inspiration and creativity “I think that’s the reason so many people and businesses in this industry are attracted to it.”
