Since 1995, the Vancouver Book and Magazine Fair Society has produced The Word On The Street Vancouver, the primary literary festival for Western Canadian book lovers and literacy enthusiasts. In 2013, this festival has a new name,Word Vancouver — a new name and feel for a growing festival, with the same reading and writing fun. For 2013, the festival has expanded to five days and now attracts an average of 30,000 attendees to events taking place at Carnegie Community Centre, Banyen Books & Sound, Historic Joy Kogawa House, Library Square, and other venues. All events are free and will take place at various venues from Sept. 25 to 29. The big festival day happens on Sunday the 29th in and around the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library (350 W. Georgia, between Robson and Georgia and Hamilton and Homer). And there’s a poetry theme going on this year — check out automated poetry vending machines on site, a peace poem, and an amazing day of poetry in the poetry tent. Wander down for musical performances, author readings and panel discussions, and take part in free workshops. Canadian authors and book and magazine exhibitors are all gathered to share their passion for words and stories. WordVancouver.ca

The Bill Reid Gallery is taking indigenous art where it hasn’t gone before with RezErect: Native Erotica — a provocative exploration into sensuality and sexuality featuring works by 27 First Nations artists from the Northwest Coast and central Canada. And it’s bound to push a few buttons. “Sex figures prominently in aboriginal stories across the continent,” says co-curator Gwaai Edenshaw in the news release. “We hope to carry on that tradition here — sexy, intelligent, fun and provocative.” Expect to blush, laugh and feel passion as you experience works by Nicholas Galanin, Dionne Paul, Alida Kinnie Starr and more. The gallery is quick to point out that “works offer vivid glimpses of the artists’ identities, but do not necessarily reflect the opinions of everyone in their Nation.” RezErect runs from Sept. 25 to Feb. 16. Have condo, will travel Trump Tower buyers will get London Air and Rolls-Royce perks to be the local champion; people will talk about this place as an icon of Vancouver,” says the 33-year-old Tiah who, along with Jim Petrus, COO of the Trump Hotel Collection, is hosting a group of journalists on the plane. This is not only a reputationmaking hotel for Vancouver. There’s a lot at stake for the Malaysian-born hotel scion as well. Tiah’s family is rich. Very rich. Rich enough to own most of a block of downtown Vancouver — bordered by West Georgia, Seymour, Dunsmuir and Richards — plus numerous holdings throughout the world. He’s become the public face of the 63-storey tower, involved in all of the decisions, including this summer’s announcement that Donald Trump would lend his brand to the project. “When you do business with someone, it’s like a marriage,” says Tiah. “You want to know who will be with you to the end.” He’d researched and sought out many other hotel management companies and didn’t like feeling

oo Kim Tiah is relaxing in the plush leather seat of a private jet. He declines the flight attendant’s offer of a glass of Veuve-Clicquot because he hasn’t had any breakfast yet and, although this will be a relaxing 35-minute trip to Tofino and back, it’s not wise to toast his newest business partnership on empty stomach. The 12-seat Challenger is owned by London Air Services. People who buy one of the 218 residences at the Tiah family’s newest hotel, the under-construction Trump International Hotel and Tower in Coal Harbour, will receive a number of flight hours on LAS’s Bombardier Lear Jet 75. They’ll also share access to a chauffeur driven Rolls-Royce Ghost should they need a drive to LAS’s terminal. As a taste of a luxurious way of life, it’s pretty sweet. But for the young man who’s pulling it all together, a lot a stress and worry has gone into creating this carefree moment. “This project has the potential

Martha Perkins photo that the CEO you deal with today might be with another company tomorrow. He clicked with Donald Trump Jr. in both a personal and professional way. “I understand what it’s like to live up to the family’s expectations,” says Tiah, who unwinds after work by playing death metal on his drum kit at the office. In an August interview with Business in Vancouver, Tiah talked about why he feels at ease with Don Jr. “We both have strong, dominant fathers who are very successful. How Don treats Don Jr. is very much how my dad treats me. It’s firm. He’s very tough on

his kid. I can associate.” Tiah was unwilling to say how much the residences will cost. It’s not quite an “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” answer; instead, Tiah says it’s important to first know exactly what amenities will be included. A pool bar nightclub, champagne lounge, destination restaurant and one Ivanka Trump’s boutique spas, Mar-aLago, are also part of the plan. “We have to get everything just perfect,” he said, the mantra sounding as if it was on a constant loop in his brain. George Wong of Magnum Projects said that it’s hoped sales will

begin in mid-October. “Vancouverites will have the first opportunity to purchase a suite,” he told WE Vancouver. Offices throughout Asia will soon be making sales, too. As the plane finished its crossing of the Georgia Straight, perhaps it wasn’t only the journalists who were regretting the end of this little escape from deadlines and responsibility. Tiah has set a lofty goal to create a building that will help define Vancouver. “It’s not about being the tallest building or the prettiest,” he said, almost wistfully. “It’s having all those other things that make you the local champion.”

t e e r t S Main

arried couple Cailyn and Steve Bays have barely seen each other since they moved into their newly purchased Main Street home in June. “I think we’ve had, maybe, four days together,” shares Cailyn — the in-demand wedding and corporate event stylist behind Delovely Creative. “The trick is, any time we have time together, we call it a date,” adds Steve — a synth-punk pioneer whose bands Hot Hot Heat, Mounties and Fur Trade take Canadian rock right off the map. When WE arranged an opportunity for the busy couple to not only explore their new neighbourhood, but do it together, they were excited to see just how much they could do in One Day on Main. Their experience starts with a visit to Clarkdale Volkswagen to test drive a 2013 Golf GTI — a performance car known for its sleek lines and sporty versatility. Then they stop into Barbarella for #haircutsthatgotogether — a current favourite hashtag of the social media-savvy salon. Next, Cailyn ducks into Archetype to find a dress for an upcoming event. When she emerges from the changing room, Steve is so blinded by her beauty he has to pick up a new pair of glasses (that lend him a distinctly Elvis Costello air). At Windsor Quality Meats, a business that’s been in the Main Street family since 1946, the “cookingless” couple brushes up on BBQ basics, makes plans for Thanksgiving and engages in a highly unorthodox business deal. For a couple who loves to entertain, no trip along Main is truly complete without a visit with the sommeliers and cicerones at Brewery Creek. Steve and Cailyn try their hardest to stump the staff with their special requests but leave the liquor store with something perfect in each hand. And, that is all before lunch, which is provided by Bob Likes Thai Food. Known for his authentic approach and Western aesthetic, owner Tai rocks their taste buds with his Thai teas and twisted fish and chips. There can only be one winner though, and the dish of the day is a classic. Finally their Main Street date ends with a visit to none other than Planet Bingo, where Steve does what everyone needs to do at least once — try to win $10,000. We all hoped that spending One Day On Main would involve a George Clooney sighting, but sadly the only film shoot we found was for Step Up 5. Epilogue: Like a modern day Cinderella, Cailyn races off to set up an evening wedding, and Steve — finding himself in withdrawal after so much quality time with his wife — wanders home, well stocked for his man date with some friends and Piranha 3DD.

Hot Hot Heat frontman Steve Bays and his wife, event stylist Cailyn, spend the day discovering some of the local businesses in their Main Street neighbourhood.

larkdale Volkswagen serves all of Vancouver with that special community-oriented, no-pressure vibe unique to Main Street. The family-owned car dealership at 4575 Main has expanded and evolved since its inception in 1960, but has never outgrown its Main Street roots. ”The reason I wanted to work here is because I’m very enthusiastic about the product. I believe in the product,” explains sales consultant Brad Fulton — a lifelong VW owner. “I absolutely love it here. It’s the best work environment I’ve ever been in, and the customers can feel that when they walk in.” Cailyn and Steve grab coffees and slide into Brad’s suggestion — the 2013 Golf GTI. Starting at $30,770, the stylish, 200-hp, performance hatchback can easily adapt to all of the young couple’s needs. “When I think of German engineering, I do think of high-end, high-priced vehicles such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes. But, with Volkswagen, you get that engineering, you get that ingenuity, but at an affordable price.”

onnor Freeman has Main Street in his blood and meat in his DNA. Ask the third-generation owner of Windsor Quality Meats at Main and King Edward about the family business and pride radiates from his broad grin. His store’s philosophy harkens back to the good old days, carrying an extensive freerange, organic and hormone-free selection with an emphasis on supporting local farms. And walking into Windsor Meats is a bit like stepping back in time: the rustic interior, original wood butcher blocks, historical photos and spotless checkered tiles give nods to its 1946 heritage. Steve and Cailyn, who admittedly don’t cook often, soak up Connor’s advice from across the glistening glass counter. As Connor explains that one particular cut of beef had been dry-aged 35 days, Steve nods sagely in agreement: “Hmm, yes…I like my meat retro.” For more adventurous home cooks, Red Seal WINDSOR chef Kyle Tillotson is MEATS there to provide his That’s not on the expertise, be it for menu! Our couple is about to leave when the newest addition to the store catches Steve’s eye. “Can I buy that crocodile?” he asks, referring to a donated bit of taxidermy on the counter that Connor’s girlfriend won’t allow at home. Faster than you can say “pork chop”, Connor trades the tetrapod for a case of Steamwhistle, and Steve heads to Brewery Creek to make good on his deal.

he Main Street area is one of those rare areas where art and business appear to be seamlessly connected in the independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Formed 10 years ago this fall, an artist collective called The Drift began representing the abundance of artists in the area as well as promoting their work in local businesses, nurturing Main Street’s unique culture. On Sunday, Sept. 29, the annual Drift Art Walk will again display the work of Main Street creatives in studios, shops, restaurants, studios and cafés along the street between 2nd and 33rd Avenues. Some of the artists will also even open their homes to the public to show off their work. “We came together to represent artists and get them out of their studios, out of their homes into the community — and to involve that community with the artist by showing the art,” says Len Budiwski, a sculptor and photographer who’s been a Drift member since its inception in 2003. “It’s a nice symbiosis of art in the real world. With the art being seen in different professions and businesses, it ties the two [areas] together on many levels.” “We saw a need for alternate viewing of Main Street work,” explains Varouj Gumuchian, execu-

tive director of The Drift board and an installation artist. “Main Street has a lot of unique qualities in its diversity of art and unique crafts with small business. We wanted to link business to the art, it was something different — we thought it was good match.” When The Drift first started, they had about 20 artists as members. Now, the number has doubled to 40, saying much about the growing scene and local business support for it. “The businesses, the MPBIA (Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Area) have been really supportive,” says Gumuchian. “It’s helped them get people in their doors with the art and the artists have sold some work, too.” The off-the-cuff, open format of the Art Walk experience creates an accessibility to a world that can be a bit intimidating to some. Galleries sometimes come with underlying expectations of interaction that can be a bit uncomfortable. The Drift makes art accessible to the non-collector, the person who just wants to enjoy it. “Historically, art has been in places like coffee shops, going way back to impressionism — we’re seeing a lot of good art in coffee shops on Main Street,” says Budiwski, who has lived near Main for more than 20 years. “The Art Walk gets you to slow down and you need to slow down, I think, to really appreciate art. “I think we’ve kind of help create a creative corridor, in a way.” In addition to bringing the public, businesses and artists together, the event also brings together those within the art community, strengthening the scene and creating connections. “(As an artist) I’ve totally connected to people I would have never connected to,” Gumuchian says. “Like, three houses from me, there are four or five other artists who I didn’t know lived there. With the businesses it’s the same thing. It’s gotten me in the door of places I wouldn’t have gone.” To find learn more about about The Drift or download an Art Walk map, go to TheDrift.ca.

Pretend you’re the Man In The Moon Literary program for men and their babies is full of imagination By Gen Handley

ordan Dawe says that on top of having an hour of quality reading time with his six-month-old son Sebastian, attending the Man In The Moon literacy program has had other benefits as well. One is equipping him with tools to fix baby grumpiness. “There’s this one song that goes like, ‘Tick-tock, tick-tock, I’m a little cuckoo clock’ and when you say it, you swing the baby back and forth like a pendulum or something,” describes the new father. “So now at home when he’s frustrated or bored we pick him and do the ‘tick-tock’ song and it makes him smile.” Another one is giving him an upper-body workout. “Oh man,” he says, laughing. “There are some songs where you get up and walk around in a circle while lifting your baby over your head.” Man In The Moon is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and will be opening its fifth location at the Mount Pleasant Library on September 30. The Vancouver Public Library’s free program is a unique, male-focused literacy and language

Jordan Dawe and his son Sebastian both get a fun work out at the Man In the Moon literary program. April Ens photo program for babies and young children with their dads, uncles, step-dads, foster dads, grandfathers or male caregiver. “We wanted something where the men would feel more encouraged to participate, where they

weren’t the only man in a group of women, at a time that would be more practical for them to come — on weekends and weekday evenings,” says program facilitator Marcus Mendes. A typical Man In The Moon

evening includes a variety of rhymes and songs with movement and dancing, group and individual reading to the babies as well as time for the men to explore a big box of books. Mendes loves seeing the babies’ reactions to the books. “Initially, they might not show much interest,” he says, “but as soon as the book box comes down [the babies] will gravitate straight to those books and look at them and chew them and try to eat them. “They’re real literary consumers, you could say. “Studies suggest that men can play a hugely important role in nurturing their children and developing literacy,” he continues. “So we just wanted an opportunity to encourage that, really. And to encourage bonding between dads and babies, and to encourage other men to get together. As one guy put it to me, ‘When I’m with the group, I don’t feel like I’m the one who knows the least.’” Dawe plans on continuing to attend the program with his son. “It’s fun. Hanging out with other guys, singing songs, reading books, getting some crackers and juice — you don’t do that very often.” In addition to the new Mount Pleasant location, Man In The Moon is also held at the Britannia, Dunbar, Kensington, Kitsilano, Oakridge libraries and the Children’s Library (Harvey Southam Room). TRUE COMMUNITY

HEALTH CARE T he term “community health centre” (CHC) can mean a number of different things, but at Mid-Main Community Health Centre, it truly is about maintaining a healthy community. When it opened its doors in 1988, the CHC was ahead of its time, providing an integrated approach to patient-centred medical and dental care. Additionally, the CHC offers a travel clinic providing preventive treatment for those going abroad,

plains Irene Clarence, Executive Director of Mid-Main. Today, health care services are offered on site with a fully functioning, interdisciplinary team of doctors, dentists, hygienists, nurse practitioners and a pharmacist. “When people come here, it’s not just a visit to the doctor, it’s a visit to a healthcare team.” This year, Irene and Mid-Main are celebrating 25 years of providing quality

“Many patients have had their entire lifetime of care with the same doctor here. You don’t hear about that too often.” says Irene Clarence, Executive Director of Mid-Main. and the team is involved in community outreach, with a variety of programs on smoking cessation, wellness, proper tooth-brushing, and walking groups for those in need. “It started with a doctor, a dentist and a group of people wanting to make social change by offering affordable and accessible dental and health care services,” ex-

care 35 years ago as a nurse, “and many patients have had their entire lifetime of care with the same doctor here. You don’t hear about that too often.”

service to the community. Impressively, the CHC has clinicians and patients who have been there the entire 25 years – a rarity in today’s health-care system. “Many of our doctors and dentists have been with us for the majority of the time,” says Irene, who started working in health

Furthermore, for government plans reimbursing well below the current BC Dental Fee guide, Mid-Main does not charge patients above what their plans pay. If a patient doesn’t have a dental plan, the CHC will give them a 10% discount – Mid-Main sees the person before the plan. The benefit of the patient-centered, interdisciplinary approach is that the team is very familiar with the patients and their circumstances, and can provide better care as a result. Knowing the “big picture” of a person’s overall health enables the Mid-Main team to take a proactive approach to treatment.

“What this clinic is doing, what is different from the rest of the system, is we’re taking care of the whole person,” Irene explains. “We know the patients very well and some have been coming here for many, many years; so this makes it possible to identify and address issues early.” “It’s health care, but health care with the idea of keeping people well and preventing illness. Being proactive actually decreases the overall costs.” Mid-Main Community Health Centre is partners with Vancouver Coastal Health, the Ministry of Children and Families as well as other groups in the Little Mountain and Riley Park neighbourhoods. hree people are huddled around a desk. Book covers are being flipped open and shut at a rapid-fire pace, until a petite woman spots me, smiles, and says she’ll be right there. Pam Townsend and her partner, David Gagné are examining, pricing and buying books from an early-morning customer at Y’s Books — a newly opened used book store at Main and 27th. So I wander to the back while I wait, cooing at the vintage table lamps and fey sitting stools dotting the tiny space. As I round a chest-high bookshelf, I see it: a mint-condition version of a graphic design book a colleague had lent me two years ago, that I had been “forgetting” to give back because it was so beautiful. Reminded of my guilt, the feeling quickly lifted as I flipped open the cover and saw $15 written faintly in pencil in the top right corner; I would buy it, pry his copy from my greedy book-hoarding clutches and return the latter to its rightful owner. (#Bookworldproblems.) As Townsend glides past me to brew some tea for our interview, I can’t help but share the serendipity. A thoughtful look crosses her face and she smiles: “A lot of people have looked at that book, and asked me about it, but nobody has bought it. I just said to David, ‘You know, someone is meant for that book.’ It was waiting for the right person.” She may be a newcomer to the book-love business, but you can tell she was always meant to matchmake.

In terms of location, the duo couldn’t have picked better, it seems. “I love the community. There’s a lot of camaraderie on Main Street. I wanted openhearted cooperation, and that’s what I find here. Trendybucks gave us free balloons for our grand opening, the store next door gave us bags for our customers. They’ve come in saying welcome. It is so beautiful.” The idea to start the store came to them while house-sitting for a friend in Terrace and wondering ‘what next?’. The psychology degree-holder explains it was “just time to open a bookstore.” What makes Y’s a particular pleasure, is that the store is wellstocked with local and BC authors. In hyper buying mode at the moment, Townsend hopes people to bring in more books with the regional angle in mind. She’s also starting in-store readings for kids ages four to nine in the next couple of weeks called Fairytale Tuesdays, offering up fiveto 10-minute doses of Grimm’s — another result of being on Main. “What I think is unique {to Main] is we have a lot of moms and families coming in asking for children’s books. And a lot of young adults come in buying books, including classics, which is so cool.” The narrative of any iconic street is written by the businesses that have been there for decades, but what keeps the pages turning are the types of new businesses the area attracts. And this particular chapter just makes you want to curl up in a cozy nook and read.

SOLO District soars above Burnaby with Altus By Kerry Vital

Appia Developments is reinforcing its reputation for amazing homes with Altus, the second phase in its SOLO District neighbourhood. Altus will be the tallest building in Burnaby at the equivalent of 55 storeys tall, with office space on the first 14 floors and residential from 200 feet up. “The views start from the bottom (residential) floor,” says Appia Sales and Marketing Manager Lisa Murrell.

With condominium homes ranging from approximately 516 to about 1,700 square feet in a variety of floorplans, it won’t be hard to find your perfect home. Something that sets Altus apart are the choices it offers for three-bedroom units, which is something buyers have been asking for and Appia is happy to be able to provide in the newest phase of SOLO District. Part of the appeal is the huge amenity space that Appia is calling Club 55 with a barbecue area, full kitchen, media area and billiards and ping-pong tables and generous outdoor deck

space for residents of Altus, to be located on the top floor of the tower. The office tower will include a gym that residents have access to as well, and a multi-sport court on the third floor. SOLO District will eventually be comprised of four residential towers and over 1,400 homes. The community will also include Burnaby’s first Whole Foods, commercial opportunities, office space and tons of green space. “There are several other exciting anchor tenants to be announced,” says Murrell. “This is a very, very cool community.” Walkability was one of the more important aspects, Murrell says. “There’s everything you could possibly need here,” she notes. “It’s been really well-received by the community.” SOLO District is perfectly situated for transit, shopping, education and leisure activities. The Brentwood Skytrain station is just steps away, along with Brentwood Town Centre. Golf courses, parks and fitness facilities are also nearby. Homes at SOLO District start at $293,900. For more information about Altus and SOLO District, visit www. solodistrict.com or call 604-298-8800.

North Burnaby is a vibrant place full of things to do, from rowing on Burnaby Lake, above, to shopping at Brentwood Town Centre, right. If it’s higher education you’re after, Simon Fraser University, above right, has been rated as one of the top universities in Canada.

North Burnaby a thriving neighbourhood By Kerry Vital

North Burnaby is a rapidly growing region, with plenty of opportunities for shopping, dining, education and recreation, from golf courses to rowing to swimming. The area is an exciting place to live and is becoming a major urban centre in its own right. Never boring and always busy, North Burnaby is becoming the place to be. North Burnaby, also known as the Brentwood area, is about 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver via SkyTrain, and about 30 minutes from the Vancouver International

Airport. This contributes to the popularity of the neighbourhood with young professionals; about 39 per cent of the population in the area is between the ages of 20 and 44. Among the notable developers who are building in North Burnaby are Appia Developments, Ledingham McAllister, Bosa Development and Embassy Developments. It is hard to be bored in North Burnaby, with its selection of parks, art galleries, museums and theatres. If it’s a bit of culture you’re looking for, you can start up on Burnaby Mountain at the Simon Fraser University Art Gallery. It’s open to the public free of charge and the displays change every few months. Simon Fraser also houses the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, which showcases artifacts from around the world. There are several parks in Burnaby, so outdoor activity is never far away. Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park surrounds the lake. The park includes a dog off-leash area, the Burnaby Sports Complex,

the Burnaby Equestrian Centre and several walking and cycling trails. However, its biggest draw is the lake itself, which has a rowing course for canoeing, kayaking and rowing training. Confederation Park is also an activity hub, with walking trails, a skate park, a lacrosse box, a running track, a community centre, several picnic sites and playgrounds, baseball diamonds and other playing fields. It’s also home to the McGill branch of the Burnaby Public Library and the Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre. North Burnaby is also full of opportunities for all levels of education. The largest institution is Simon Fraser University, just a few minutes from the centre of North Burnaby on Burnaby Mountain. The British Columbia Institute of Technology also has its main campus in Burnaby. North Burnaby is a well-connected city, with several options for public transportation, walking or cycling if you feel like leaving your

car behind. Because it’s nearly the centre of the Metro Vancouver area, it is easy to get on your way, whatever way you choose. Food is a necessity of life, and it’s highly likely that shopping is as well. Luckily, North Burnaby has many options for both. Your first stop for some retail therapy is Brentwood Town Centre, located right in the centre of North Burnaby and well-served by transit, including its own SkyTrain station. With department stores and smaller shops all in one place, you’ll be able to do much of your shopping in one spot. North Burnaby is a chef ’s dream, with stores such as Bosa Foods, famous for amazing Italian imports, and Cioffi’s Meat Market and Deli, which offers an array of fresh cheeses, dried pastas, olive oils, premium meats and homemade sausages, among other products. Grocery stores such as Safeway and Save-On Foods are also in the area. If you’re looking for a night out, there are many options for casual or fine dining as well.

Understanding architects

W

hy do architects have such strange personalities? Or do they? At the Architectural Institute of British Columbia’s upcoming annual conference, Professor Brian Little (who’s been described as a combination of Robin Williams and Albert Einstein) will examine how personality differences play a pivotal role in the profession of architecture. He’ll talk about how highly creative architects differ from their less creative peers, how the myth of the creative hero can play havoc with architecture firms, and why differences in personality can drive us both “crazy” and creative. Dr. Little is a Distinguished

Scholar in the Department of Psychology at Cambridge University. The conference (Oct. 23 to 25) is called Sea Change: Architecture on the Crest – calls attention to the dynamic, critical times in which we live. Forces of change, both natural and man-made, are shaking the foundations of our communities and stirring questions about our shared future. Global issues such as livability, sustainability, affordability and environmental impact are felt by all, with a particularly strong resonance within the architectural profession. The goal of this conference is to inform, excite, challenge and inspire in order to bring about positive change. It

will also serve to underscore the important role that architects can and should play in helping to continue charting the course for successful, sustainable communities. The 2013 Conference marks the first partnership between the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and the American Institute of Architecture – Northwest & Pacific Region. The conference culminates with the Presidents’ Dinner & Awards Gala on October 25. This prestigious event announces and celebrates winners of the 2013 AIBC and AIA NW&PR awards programs. — from the AIBC.ca website

A big silence is settling over you as new amusements and amazements rise up within you. It will be understandable if you feel reluctant to blab about them. They need more time to ripen.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Would you be willing to go to extraordinary lengths to transform aspects of your life that you have felt are hard to transform? Now would be a good time to do that. Luck will flow your way if you work on healing your number one wound. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): For four days twice a year, the East China Sea recedes to create a narrow strip of land between two Korean islands, Jindo and Modo. People celebrate the “Sea-Parting Festival” by strolling back and forth along the temporary path. I foresee some sweet marvel akin to this one occurring in your life very soon, Libra. Be ready to take advantage of a special dispensation. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): I see revenge as one of the top three worst emotions. It rarely has redeeming value. People who actively express it often wreak pain and ruin on others and themselves. I bring this up, Scorpio, because now is an excellent time for you to shed desires for revenge. Dissolve them, get rid of them, talk yourself out of indulging in them. The reward will be a great liberation. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): Just for a few days, would you be willing to put your attention on the needs of others more than on your own? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): British wildlife lover Gary Zammit found a baby heron cowering in a broken nest. Its parents were dead. Zammit took the orphan under his wing. He named it Dude, and cared for it as it grew. Eventually he realized that Dude was never going to learn to fly unless he intervened. Filling his pockets full of the food that Dude loved, Zammit launched a series of flying lessons — waving his arms and squawking as he ran along a flat meadow that served as a runway. Dude imitated his human dad, and soon mastered the art of flight. It’s time for your mind to teach your body an instinctual skill or self-care habit.

creative generosity as you bestow your unique blessings in ways that make you feel powerful. In the words of theologian Frederick Buechner, you should go “to the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): Imagine the CEOs of five crazily rich U.S. corporations stage announce that in the future they will turn down the massive welfare benefits and tax breaks the federal government has been doling out to them all these years. Now picture this: The Pope issues a statement declaring that since Jesus Christ never had a single bad word to say about homosexuals, the Catholic Church is withdrawing its resistance to gay rights. I am envisioning a comparable reversal in your life, Capricorn — a flip-flop that seems equally improbable. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Matteo Ricci was a Jesuit priest who lived from 1552 to 1610. For his last 28 years, he worked as a mis-

sionary in China. Whenever he sent out a letter, he was aware that there’d be no response for seven years. What would you express about your life right now if you knew your dear ones wouldn’t learn of it until 2017? Imagine describing to them what your plans will be between now and then... what you hope to accomplish and how you will transform yourself. Take inventory of your long-term future.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): The cosmos is granting you a poetic licence to practise the art of apodyopsis with great relish. You know what apodyopsis is, right? It refers to the act of envisioning people naked — mentally undressing them so as to picture them in their raw state. So, yes, by all means, Pisces, enjoy this creative use of your imagination without apology. It will prime you to penetrate beneath the surface of things. It will encourage you to see through everyone’s social masks and tune in to what’s really going on in their depths. You need to do that right now.

Tie-dye revival Shop Talk by Kelsey Klassen

T

here’s no smell of patchouli filling the air at WE Vancouver as Lexi Soukoreff lays out her tie-dyed yoga pants on the table. She fans out the hand-dyed panties and scarves next, and… Nope…The only scent surrounding the collection is of style with subtle notes of sexy. Soukoreff is spot on trend. Tie-dye — once the official print of psychedelic music and hippie clichés — is back. With skin-tight Shibori pants and flowing ombre dresses appearing on the likes of Nicole Richie and Alessandra Ambrosio this summer (it’s practically all Ambrosio wears on the street), the look has returned, sophisticated and effortless. Effortless, yes. Easy? No. In reality, Soukoreff puts hours of layered techniques into each one-of-a-kind tie-dyed piece for her clothing line, Daub + Design: “I call it colour math, because most of us know from basic art classes that red + yellow + blue = mud. So you have to be really careful.” The designer got her BFA from Emily Carr, studied merchandising at Blanche Macdonald

and textile design in the nowsuspended Textile Arts program at Capilano University. “It’s disappointing,” she says of the program cut. “In terms of having technical skills to take to a company or to start your own line, it was really valuable.” In the two-year diploma program, Soukoreff was able to use a plethora of specialized equipment for weaving, silk screening, and what she ultimately discovered as her favourite process: surface design, which is “anything that goes on the surface as opposed to actual construction.” Her company name has its roots in technique; ‘daub’ means to “apply colouring material to a surface crudely,” but the results are antithetically refined — the wicking fabric aptly handling the rigours of yoga class while transitioning in style to après-drinks on the town. Her pieces are sewn locally, and hand-dyed by Soukoreff in her Gastown studio in small runs using only the necessary amount of dye, meaning her line is also eco-friendly. With Fall filling her collection with darker hues and limited editions, head to her website for updates and local stockists. Custom prints are also available. DaubAndDesign.com

Eating right in retirement Earl Bergen, General Manager Cedar Springs Retirement Residence

Most people I talk to think that moving to a retirement community is done for health reasons. In reality, many factors weigh into the decision, including a major one: healthy nutrition. Often, seniors are socially isolated, living alone and eating alone, perhaps even poorly.

Residents begin returning from physical checkups with good results, reporting improved blood pressure, a healthy weight and lower cholesterol. In turn, they become more

The art of sausage making Follow Me Foodie ausage making is one of the oldest forms of food processing and how meat was preserved. The whole animal was valued and remaining scraps and organs were ground up, salted, seasoned and stuffed into casings, often from a cleaned pig’s intestines. The sausages were cured, air dried or smoked, and the method and ingredients were dependent on regional resources and climate. People in drier climates such as Spain often specialize in air-dried sausages while humid climates might offer more fresh sausages, or add vinegar to the recipe to help with the preservation process. Maximizing the use of the animal by using the “leftovers” is still how some sausages are made today, but often poor quality ones will contain other mysterious “fillers” and “preservatives”. Sausage makers have refined the process and made it a respected art. Rather than only using the unwanted parts of the pig (which are desirable to some cultures) they are using pork shoulder and butt as a solid base for their sausages. Valuable parts such as the tenderloin would be wasted in a sausage as well as being too lean. Besides ingredients and process, cooking is key. People often slit the casings to allow heat to escape while cooking, which is a sausage crime. The casing is there to hold everything together and keep the juices locked in. Sausages are meant to be cooked slowly at a low heat. Avoid blistering and splitting the skin; indirect heat on a grill is ideal. In a culturally diverse city with artisan sausage makers and ethical pork farmers, we have a wide selection to try from. On Saturday, October 5, join the BC Chefs Association at The Great Canadian Sausage Making Competition presented by BC Pork at The Fraser Valley Food Show at Tradex, Abbotsford (1190 Cornell). Nearly 100 sausages were entered by professional competitors last year and they expect around the same this year. Professional judging is noon to 3pm and People’s Choice Award Sausage Sampling by the public is 11am to 1:30pm for a nominal $2 fee per person. Last year’s all-natural, local and sustainable pork sausage winners included:

Hester Creek’s new releases At a media launch at Gastown’s Cork and Fin restaurant, Hester Creek’s winemaker Rob Summers and general manager Mark Sheridan (pictured) celebrated the release of four new wines from the Golden Mile Bench vineyard. The 2012 foodfriendly Chardonnay is Hester Creek’s first vintage of this style (aged in a combination of French and American oak for eight months.) The 2010 Judge, cleverly named because you “approach the bench”, is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2011 Reserve Cabernet Franc comes on the heels of the 2010 vintage, which won a Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence. Last but not least is the 2011 Reserve Merlot from some of its oldest vines. “The trick,” says a nimble-footed Sheridan, “is to dance with Mother Nature.” Martha Perkins photo

Muscadet wines are always citrusy, full of minerality and crisp; this guy definitely following suit. The kicker with this one is once the fermentation has taken place, the spent residual yeast that sits at the bottom of the tank is left there for months (rather than being filtered out), elements of which delicately seep back through the wine. The result is a ribbon of richness from start to finish, tying together lemon, lime leaf, oyster shell and more mineral notes. Seafood, seafood, seafood.

My palate always perks up when an Argentinian red wine strays from the ultra-common composition of 100 per cent Malbec. This hearty number blends in some Syrah and Bonarda as well, resulting in a few more layers of texture, complexity and flavor. Perfumed Italian plums waft from the glass, then continue through your first sips along with a chocolate-vanilla swirl and fresh blackberries sailing through. The acidity here is good and lofty, with some dusty tannins keeping everything in place. A good bite of extra-dark chocolate on the finish will keep you coming back for more.

When I tasted this wine with proprietor Michael Dinn, I shed any aspect of a poker face in favour of blurting out, “This is the best Chardonnay JoieFarm has ever made!” Tropical off the bat, with papaya and mango erupting everywhere, followed by lemongrass, honey crisp apple, starfruit and so much more. The French oak is perfectly integrated, there’s incredible length, and just as those layers keep building, there’s a fresh, flinty finish that buoys it all wonderfully. I know I’m gushing, but I truly believe they’ve knocked it out of the park with this one.

CARRIBEAN PEARL

I’m really not a sake guy. I recently tried this one though, and everything changed. The producer has more of a shared ‘Western’ wine philosophy and steers his sakes in that direction; vintage-specific, lively acidity and abundant, fresh flavours. This is a pricey bottle that’s a rarity around town, so contact their importer to nab one, or grab yourself a glass at places such as Blue Water Café or Kingyo. A slew of grapefruit will jump out at you, with Gewürztraminer-esque lychee in the mid-palate and then some fresh licorice-y anise on the finish. A gamechanger for me.

What a Rush! RUSH

Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl Directed by Ron Howard High-octane action meets fierce competition in Ron Howard’s adrenaline-fueled look at historical car racing in the exceptional new film Rush. Based on the popular 1970s rivalry between British Formula One driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), the story wastes no time delving into the personal lives of the two characters and tracing their lasting feud. Hemsworth displays his best acting yet as the brash and boozing Hunt whose lust for life is juxtaposed effectively with Lauda’s technical prowess and stern discipline, which Bruhl tackles masterfully. Rush not only captures the sights and sounds of the era, it also feels like it was plucked from the genera-

tion as cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle keeps the picture gritty. Howard makes skillful use of close-ups during much of the action, quite literally putting the audience inside the cramped confines of the cars as they race at breakneck speeds through all manner of inclement weather. Screenwriter Peter Morgan’s (Frost/Nixon, The Queen) script maintains a Thor Diakow delicate balance between the central figures and offers some unexpectedly profound sentiments in the movie’s finale. Unfortunately, the primary love interests (Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara) of the two racers often take a backseat to the main drama and Howard lays on the foreshadowing rather thick in one sequence. Minor quibbles aside though, Rush is a return to form for the filmmaker and packs a visceral punch.

Let me explain myself Last week Sivak (“With all due respect”) responded to my previous week’s rant. I had a split-second “should I stay or should I go now?” decision when I went through the light on my bike. We’ve all been there. I was baffled at why the driver was losing it saying that all cyclists are privileged. Are there consequences for going through? You bet! Was I in a position to stop if I really wanted to? You bet! Was it safe? I made the call it was. Anonymous

Poo-couver I am a genuine dog lover and the more dogs I meet, the less I like people, which should come as no surprise in a beautiful but crazy city like Vancouver. However, I am really annoyed at those dog owners who think that the rock garden in front of my apartment building is a place for their canine child to dump its refuse, most of which is never picked up. What you people think is a toilet for both canines and intoxicated humans to use after a night at the pub is a non-profit housing project for disabled and elderly members of the Vancouver’s Jewish community. There is also a full service synagogue which has its front doors not even 30 feet away. Out of a mutual respect, I would never stop to take a pee or dump my stinking cargo onto your front lawns/patios or that of a church, mosque or any other house of worship. Shalom Aleichem, ‘peace be unto you’ and thank you for your consideration. Leslie Benisz

I want to express a great big THANK YOU to all the people who design, plant, and maintain the volunteer gardens on street corners and in traffic circles, all over the West End. These people obviously love what they do and this shows in their delightful and colourful displays. In particular, the new plots at the corner of Comox and Chilco are amazing. These plots, along with the beautiful display in front of the nearby historic house, give me much joy whenever I go by. Thank you to you all. Alan

Give it a brake At SW Marine and Granville, I stopped at a stop sign to let a lady cross in her wheelchair; she had an assistance dog. Nobody stopped or even slowed down rushing through the exit off Granville at the Arthur Laing Bridge. I wasn’t waving just to say hello. Pay attention, drivers! It was a person in a wheelchair trying to legally cross the street! I was thoroughly disgusted at you drivers. Tom V.

Shhhhhh.... Why is the Joe Fortes Library so noisy? If it isn’t the staff talking at the top of their lungs, it’s patrons carrying on animated personal conversations with their friends! And, of course, there is the kids section but why are they screaming? How can they read and scream at the same time? Isn’t this supposed to be a library or is it a daycare facility? Why doesn’t someone put up a sign that says “Quiet Please”? I SAID, WHY DOESN’T SOMEONE PUT A SIGN UP THAT SAYS “QUIET PLEASE”?????? Anonymous

3 days + 362 days = 1 year of celebrating culture By Martha Perkins

D

on’t think of BC Culture Days as a threeday celebration. Think of it as the opening act for the other 362 days in a year when artists and performers turn our day-to-day world into their stage. The annual nationwide event is an invitation to “touch, taste, feel and fall in love with culture in your community,” Lucille Pacey, the president and CEO of Arts Umbrella, said at the Vancouver launch of the September 27 to 29 festival. “Culture Days ignite a love affair with culture that lasts all your life.” “We want it to be just the opening of 365 days of arts and culture so people make arts and culture a habit,” said Rosemary Thomson, music director of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. In communities large and small, Culture Days is not just about the performances; it’s about how we can celebrate and participate in cultural events both large and small. Whether it’s enjoying a symphony concert or looking up at the heavens and singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” with your children while on a camping trip, arts and culture should be a natural way to express who we are. “It brings us together to a shared experience of human interaction on a simple level,” Thomson said. “Through arts and culture we can change the world one song at a time.” Faye Whiteman, the retiring president and CEO of the Vancouver Foundation, laughed when she recounted the early end to her potential music career: “I started clarinet when I was 12 but when my parents sent me to the barn to practise, I think

they did damage to my future as an orchestral musician.” But music’s loss has been philanthropy’s gain. The foundation gives $1 million a year to arts and culture projects (while having to turn down $7 million in requests.) One grant this year is for a project to highlight Vancouver’s black community in Strathcona. “I don’t need to tell you the power of the arts to enrich, inspire and even to heal,” she told the crowd at the Arts Club’s Revue Stage. If you go to the Culture Days website and click on My Culture Days, you can find a list of all the activities in each community and region. Plan your weekend at CultureDays.ca.

VIFF PICKS GILLIAN HORVATH (Writer/Producer)

F

or filmmakers in conflict-plagued regions, making movies often means putting their lives on the line — and the sacrifices of two such directors are of keen interest to Gillian Horvath. The veteran writer and producer placed Manuscripts Don’t Burn and Closed Curtain — both by Iranian directors, one of whom made his movie while under house arrest — right at the top of her VIFF viewing list. “It’s hard to get your work out there, but the effort we have to go through in our version of development hell compares not at all to being arrested for your work, and forbidden from making it, and yet making it anyway,” says Horvath, whose long list of writing credits includes Sanctuary, Baywatch, Beverly Hills 90210, and Quantum Leap. “That kind of commitment really impresses me.” She’s already got her tickets for a screening of the Canadian-made riff on Don Quixote, The Right Kind of Wrong. “Sara Canning is in that and I’ll see anything that she’s in,” says Horvath, who developed and wrote for Primeval: New World, which showcased Canning as an ass-kicking dinosaur wrangler. “What draws me into VIFF are the films that are being made by the people I know and have worked with,” says Horvath. “Some of them don’t get distribution so it’s the only chance to see them.”

Three film and television pros share their VIFF memories, viewing strategies and picks for 2013 with Sabrina Furminger

ALEKS PAUNOVIC

ALYSON DRYSDALE (Producer/Educator)

(Actor)

I

t’s hard to top Aleks Paunovic’s first taste of VIFF. The year was 2004, and the champion boxer turned actor had made his VIFF debut in Gary Yates’ Seven Times Lucky. The film starred Kevin Pollack as a smalltime grifter, and was a hit with the VIFF crowd. “We won for best Canadian feature and I got to accept the award with [costar] Babs Chula on behalf of the director,” says Paunovic. “I cherish that memory.” For VIFF 2013, the busy actor (who recurs as Jim McAllister on Arctic Air) will enjoy the fest as a spectator. His number-one pick is Leap 4 Your Life. The edgy mockumentary (starring April Telek and directed by Gary Hawes) delves into adolescent angst via the highly competitive — and messy — world of teen dance troupes. “The trailer is hilarious and I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about it,” says Paunovic. And this is how Paunovic typically curates his festival-viewing schedule. “I go with buzz from people that I respect, who actually do more homework than I do,” says Paunovic, laughing. Paunovic’s work takes him all over the map (he recently wrapped a family-friendly film in Duncan, directed by Peter DeLuise), but VIFF anchors the native Winnipegger to his adopted city. “I have a sense of home when I come to VIFF. It just feels comfortable.”

A

lyson Drysdale’s first glimpse of VIFF was a little different than Aleks Paunovic’s. “I remember coming around the corner [at the Ridge] and seeing this huge line snaking around the block and being like, ‘Whoa! What happened here?!” The reason for her bewilderment? Drysdale’s first VIFF was the first VIFF ever. Back in 1982, the producer and educator was a recent film school grad who had never before experienced the creative chaos of an urban film festival. “I can’t remember what I saw that night, but I remember being excited about this big new thing that was happening,” she recalls. Since then Drysdale has employed an arsenal of strategies to get to as many VIFF screenings as possible — like the incredibly satisfying year she only attended afternoon showings at venues near her place of work. For the 2013 edition, Drysdale’s limited herself to films in the Cinema of our Time category. “I love contemporary fiction, no matter where it originates,” she enthuses. First on her list is Ali, a coming-of-age tale by Spanish filmmaker Paco R. Baños that’s advertised as “Juno without the pop cultural exhibitionism.” This is followed by The Bag of Flour in which filmmaker Kadija Leclere paints a portrait of abduction in the Arab world. “I enjoy that mix of different cultures, intrigue, and harrowing experiences,” says Drysdale.

The funniest burning feeling you’ll ever have By Martha Perkins

R

edemption through a sexually transmitted disease? You’re about to get That Burning Feeling, the most non-saccharine romantic comedy you’ll probably ever watch. The début film by Vancouver director Jason James is about a young man who finds love while in the midst of the painful process: he has to tell the many women with whom he’s recently had casual sex that he might have given them something more than just the quick brush-off the morning after. “I wanted to do a romantic comedy about the least romantic thing possible,” says James, who also worked with SFU film school grad Nick Citton on the script. That Burning Feeling explores “what happens when you think you’re in the place you’re supposed to be and you’re still not happy,” James said at the recent media launch of the Vancouver International Film Festival. Adam Murphy (Paulo Constanzo) is, on the surface, living the dream life of a successful single young professional. Money? He’s got it. Relationships? Who needs them when it’s easy to just have sex? But then his doctor (Jay Brazeau) tells Adam that he has an STD and it’s time to get re-acquainted with his recent liaisons. (“If gonorrhea was on Facebook,” the doctor says, trying to cheer Adam up, “it would have 450 million friends.”) “Adam only knows how to physically connect with women,” James says of his lead character. “But as soon as he doesn’t sleep with them and gets to know them [while telling them about his STD], he finds out they’re interesting.” Love comes, not easily, in the form of Liv (Ingrid Haas), “a tough legal aid worker who happens to

be fighting his ex-employer over a planned condo development.” The film is highly polished for a young director who, as one of the producers, scrambled for financing. The experience of filming on a budget, however, turned out to be a liberating one. There were no line-ups of trailers parked on Vancouver streets for the filming of a one-minute scene. No made-to-measure film sets. Instead, there were creative ways to save money that ended up making the film better, James says. As the film became “smaller and smaller, it became truer and truer,” he says. For instance, instead of building a set for a café, he found the perfect one (the Wilder Snail in Strathcona). When the script called for a scene at a basketball game, which would have required lots of extras, James switched it to a fencing match, which made it funnier. Brazeau’s three scenes were shot in a day (not difficult to do when working with such a pro.) “It was letting these guys find the material and giving them room to play with it,” James says. In the search for authenticity, “you become creative in your limitations.” That Burning Feeling is part of the Vancouver International Film Festival and will first be released in six cities in 2014. It’s also been picked up by the Movie Network and Movie Central. James’ current project is producing Mountain Man, a dysfunctional family comedy that turns into a survival film. It’s shooting this winter. That Burning Feeling screens Sept. 29 at 6:30pm and Oct. 11 at 3:30pm at the Rio Theatre and Oct. 5 at 4pm at SFU Woodwards. Tickets at VIFF.org. Jason James will participate in VIFF’s Film and Television Forum panel “Canuck First-Time Feature Film Directors” on Oct. 5 at 11am. Tickets at forum.viff.org.

ENOUGH SAID

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener Directed Nicole Holofcener With all due respect to Sunday’s tasteful tribute at the Emmy’s, it’s the latest awkward dramedy from Nicole Holofcener (Please Give) that’ll really have you mourning the loss of James Gandolfini. Exhibiting both magnetism and comic chops, Gandolfini plays Albert, a self-avowed slob who has managed to catch the eye of Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a masseuse who’s similarly divorced. Unfortunately for Albert, Eva has also recently made the acquaintance of his exwife (Catherine Keener), who’s an open book on his lesser qualities. Fortunately, Enough Said is a considerably more subtle undertaking than such a contrived set-up would suggest. Holofcener has a deft touch with sharp dialogue and an aptitude for complex relationships. Full review by Curtis Woloschuk at WEVancouver.com.

There’s no lonelier feeling than being in a doctor’s office after being told you have an STD. It turns out it’s also a funny premise for a romantic comedy, That Burning Feeling with Paulo Constanzo.

3 Days in Havana has a plot to die for By Martha Perkins

T

ony Pantages wants to talk about 3 Days in Havana without really having to talk about it. It’s kind of “I’d love to tell you about the plot but then I’d have to kill you.” Because talking about the plot of this thriller/mystery/crime movie dances dangerously close to revealing the plot. In fact, the co-director even tells me that it would be better not to screen an advance copy because I would miss out on the thrill of watching its world premiere on the big screen of a darkened theatre with a whole bunch of other movie lovers at the Vancouver International Film Festival. If you head to VIFF.org and look up the 3 Days in Havana, it says this: “In Havana on business, Jack Petty (Gil Bellows, who directs with Tony Pantages) finds himself mixed up in a conspiracy that includes assassination, kidnapping and more. The fun here comes not just from the gritty details, sharp plot twists, close shaves and slick repartee, but from

the knowledge, quickly acquired, that nothing is what it seems.” So, now that we have the plot out of the way… But there’s something else we should clear up. 3 Days in Havana is not Seven Days in Havana, and not just because it was made with a lot less money and five fewer directors. Bellows (Smallville, Ally McBeal, Shawshank Redemption) and Pantages came up with the name of their movie first but Benecio del Toro et al finished and distributed their seven days/ seven directors film first. For Pantages, 3 Days in Havana pays homage to some of his favourite films by mentor John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man.) It also celebrates Cuba. Even though the film is about deception, conspiracy and murder, Cuba is not cast as the bad guy. It’s the people who go there who do bad things. “Havana is fuelled by spirit, resilient to tragedy and buoyed by pride,” says Pantages. “Cuba is the David to the world’s Goliath…. It made us hold up a mirror to ourselves. The villains aren’t Communist Cubans. The villains are people you and I know.”

lows on another project and “fell in love with” 3 Days in Havana. “He directed scenes on the written page,” Pantages says. As co-directors, Pantages says he and Bellows “had each other’s back. We’re a two-headed beast. Gil’s an intelligent, analytical man who break things down. I’m ‘throw the spaghetti against the wall and see if it sticks.’” Pantages and Bellows met when they were both acting in a project in Tofino 26 years ago. “We were sitting on a log telling stories to one another. We shook hands and said we were going to make quality films.” Christopher Heyerdahl (Twilight Saga, True Blood, Hell on Wheels) plays a Canadian Consulate official. He and Pantages have been friends since they were in Barry Rector’s musical theatre class at West Vancouver Secondary. “We were the Glee kids and Barry really inspired us. He’s still a mentor to a lot of us,” says Pantages, who gives a shoutout to Rector and Schlesinger in the movie’s credits. Heyerdahl shares Pantages’ reticence about giving too much away about his character, Anders. Actor Christopher Heyerdahl and co-director Tony Pantages “It’s difficult to describe…,” he await the premiere of 3 Days in Havana. Martha Perkins photo says. “You can’t say good guy or bad guy. He creates conflict and Pantages and Bellows wrote stage, Steve Pink (Gross Pointe he’s not who or what our hero the initial script with lots of Blank, High Fidelity) came on expects. He surprises both the input from friends. In the final board. He was working with Belcharacters and the audience.” “What we perceive and what is happening can be two different things,” Pantages says with that air of mysteriousness.
