Belt up is a road safety awareness campaign to remind the community to wear their seat belts. The Insurance Commission of Western Australia has funded the campaign since 1998 to try to reduce injuries from motor vehicle accidents.

There are over 48,000 rugby players in WA, many of them male. Males are 77% more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a car crash on WA roads.

Preventing and minimising injuries helps keep motor injury insurance premiums affordable.

One crash can end or change a life forever. RugbyWA is spreading the message in our communities to wear seatbelts. We want our players leading on the field, not sidelined by a car crash.

COACH & CAPTAIN REPORT in Super Rugby came under question has had a profound effect on everyone close to the team. West Australians sure are tough.

As a kid growing up in South Africa, I can vividly remember waking up before sunrise on Saturday mornings to watch Super Rugby. Before the end of Apartheid and sporting sanctions in 1992, we had never seen international players. And then suddenly… our TV was filled with superstars like Jonah Lomu, John Eales, the Brooke brothers, Christian Cullen and many others. It was a magical time. Super Rugby ruled. And it still does. Despite some challenges, the competition’s global reach of over 50 million viewers makes it by far the most popular provincial rugby competition in the world. Indeed, more people watch rugby globally than the AFL and NRL combined! Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I’d be working fulltime in Super Rugby, much less have the honour of overseeing a team from my current position. And to do so in Western Australia is particularly special. The way our community rallied around us when our long-term future

Over the last ten years the deck has been stacked against us, but we have so much in our favour: 1. Western Australia’s Pioneering spirit Western Australia is a melting pot of people from diverse backgrounds – we have made the world’s most isolated city our home. This pioneering heritage makes us special and bonds us together. We are brave, resilient, and self-motivated, and our rugby must embody these qualities - a style of game that relies on skill to play with openness and freedom; the way that rugby is supposed to be played. This is all driven by our most enduring Western Australian quality: Playing to Win. 2. Our Force Family: we celebrate each other’s success Being a pioneer is hard. We face many challenges. And there will be many more. But to succeed we will need everybody. Teamwork and collaboration through every aspect of rugby life in Western Australia is at the heart of our success. There is no room for lone stars - we must all act as a cohesive constellation to win. It is our trust upon what we have learnt from ‘Hodgo’. With nine capped Wallabies in the squad including new signing Tatafu Polota-Nau, we have a host of senior players with strong leadership qualities that we can rely on.

2017 is sure to be an exciting year ahead for the Road Safety Western Force, with a new coaching panel and two new captains with both myself and Heath Tessmann leading the club this season. I am honoured to lead this great club and organisation, and look forward to the success that the season will bring. In my seven years at the club I have played under the leadership of club legend Matt Hodgson, and while Heath and I will bring our own style of leadership we will draw

With 15 new signings over the break pre-season has been a buzz, with new squad members earning their stripes and challenging senior players for their positions. With so many great new recruits it’s hard not to get excited at this time of year, players like Bill Meakes and Curtis Rona have looked really sharp throughout the pre-season and I can’t wait to see them in the blue jersey at the ‘Force Field’. There is no doubt 2016 was a disappointing year, but I firmly believe that the club has taken significant steps in the right direction. From making terrific coaching and playing appointments, to the fantastic Own the Force initiative, where over 4,500 passionate rugby fans put their support behind the future of the Western Force. I think new assistant coach Joe Barakat put it perfectly earlier in the pre-season when

We are all part of the Force Family: players, support staff, supporters, members and owners. 3. We look at our shoes, but stay focused on the horizon We operate in a fast-paced environment and we play every game to win. But while we are ambitious in the short-term, we recognise that it takes seven years to develop a promising teenager into a Road Safety Western Force player. The Future Force and Junior Pathway Program, where young players are coached in rugby and life, is our foundation for the future. Community engagement with clubs is our commitment to grass roots rugby. This is a long-term program to develop skills and loyalty for a long-term future. We believe that if we play the way rugby is supposed to be played, then the little bits of luck that we need will come our way. Our goal in 2017 is to play the way rugby is supposed to be played, and to make you proud. Thank you for being part of the Sea of Blue. Warm regards, Dave asked about whether this is a rebuilding phase for the club, he said – “When you talk about a rebuilding phase, you can afford to lose and at this stage we can’t afford to lose.” A fairly honest answer and it’s exactly the mindset the team has, we are playing to win and playing for our supporter base. Which leads me to the reason we run out on the park every week, the ever loyal Sea of Blue. We honestly couldn’t ask for a more supporting and loyal fan base. The Sea of Blue are the driving force behind the Force, if there was one reason for wanting success it would be to repay the faith that they have shown us over the past 12 years. I hope to see as many fans in blue as possible this season, as we strive for success on and off the field. We need your support this season, we want you with us on this journey and I hope to see you in the Sea of Blue this year. See you at the Force Field, Ben

TATAFU POLOTA-NAU

A POINT TO PROVE IN PERTH FEATURE STORY By Fraser Smith

141 Super Rugby Caps, 68 Test Caps, and a reputation as one of the most fearless and determined players in world rugby today. The recruitment of Wallaby hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau is arguably the biggest signing in the Road Safety Western Force’s 12-year history. The abrasive hooker is renowned for his set piece efficiency, fearless ball-carrying and over the course of his 12-year career has established himself as one of the most ferocious tacklers in world rugby with his low hard hitting tackles striking fear in the hearts of his opposition. Born and raised in Western Sydney, ‘Taf’ is one of the few players in the modern era to have debuted for the Wallabies before earning a Super Rugby cap with the former IRB Under 21 Player of the Year debuting against England in 2005 before running out for the Waratahs in 2006.

After more than a decade in the sky blue jersey of the Waratahs including a Super Rugby title in 2014 the 31-yearold brings a wealth of experience to the West as he looks to build on his spectacular resume in a darker shade of blue. “It feels unbelievable to be here,” Polota-Nau said. “I expressed interest in coming to the Force when we played a Test match here against Argentina. To see the number of people that came out to support us was incredible and I can’t wait to run out in front of them as a Force player.” “From a playing point of view I think I can still really develop my game and contribute to the team. There is plenty of young talent at the Force and some great recruits so I’m excited about what we can achieve together this season.” Naturally, a player of Poloto-Nau’s calibre attracted an array of offers from overseas clubs but the allure of the gold jersey made the decision to turn down an overseas contract a straight forward decision.

“I still feel like I have unfinished business in Australia, my goal still is to be the number one hooker in the country. I also want to be able to share my wisdom and experience with other hookers because the more I can do the better Australian rugby will be in the long run.”

It’s not every day that you see an accomplished professional player and Wallaby stalwart running touch at local matches, refilling water bottles for junior teams and manning the barbeque at junior training on Thursday nights but Polota-Nau is not your standard rugby player.

“Playing for Australia is the ultimate for me and I want to continue playing for the Wallabies for as long as possible. The Rugby World Cup is the pinnacle of our sport and having played in two now, and reaching the final in 2015, the desire is certainly there to work towards getting another shot at the World Cup.”

Despite all the success the decorated hooker has enjoyed he has never lost sight of where it all started and the reason he is where he is today. For the last five years PolotaNau has been an active board member at Parramatta and constantly volunteers for the thankless jobs that many would shy away from.

After an injury crisis hit the club’s hooking stocks in 2016 there is no shortage of depth this season and the Super Rugby centurion is determined to push and be pushed by the other hookers in the Force squad. “My goal here is to challenge the other hookers in the squad and help them reach their full potential.” “Harry Scoble is probably the best example of that. He’s a local guy who has come through to Super Rugby and I think he scored a meat pie against the ‘Tahs on debut if I remember correctly!

“My biggest passion about the game is the grass roots level because that is how I came through the system and it really is the life blood of our game.” “I started rugby pretty late in my teens and what I remember fondly was that the manager of our team would pick up eight of the players from our team and take us to the games. That showed me just how much passion and love people had for the game.

“Harry really impressed me when I played against him in that game, his work rate is really high and he fights hard, I can definitely see a lot of potential there and with Anaru (Rangi) as well. So I really think they can challenge me and I can help them as well.”

“You have people in rugby clubs that actually just do it for the love of the game, at the end of the day I just want to give back to the volunteers who put their heart and soul into their club and the sport. I just want to be able to give back by chewing the fat with old heads at the rugby club and engaging with the little ankle biters who are playing with their friends and having fun.”

Polota-Nau joins the Force as one of 15 new signings for the club heading into the 2017 Super Rugby season and says the addition of new blood and some new coaching staff gives the team the fresh start it needs.

Now as he begins his next chapter in the west Polota-Nau says the prospect of engaging with the state’s passionate rugby community and growing the game in Western Australia is something he is looking forward to.

“The best thing about the squad we have for 2017 is that there are so many new faces so we can all come together and really start fresh and set our sights on where we want to be in one, two or three years’ time.”

“I would love to help promote rugby in Western Australia because I believe there is so much talent here.”

“We want to make sure everyone is on the same page about what it means to play for the Western Force and develop a vision on the way we want to play, if everyone buys into that on and off the field it sets us on the right path.” Not only is ‘Taf’ a tireless worker on the pitch he does some of his hardest work away from the field as a passionate and highly engaged supporter of grass roots rugby in particular his beloved Parramatta Two Blues.

“You’ve got guys like Dane Haylett-Petty who have come right through the WA and Force system and now into the Wallabies and there are so many local players in the Force squad now.” “The kids that are running around in WA club rugby now are the future of the Force, of the Wallabies and I can’t wait to get out there and start engaging with the rugby community in WA.”

15 new player signings, a new Head Coach at the helm, three new coaches joining the club and two new captains leading the men into battle – the winds of change are strong in the West ahead of the 2017 Super Rugby season.

“With new coaching staff comes new ideas, both of our senior assistant coaches have coached overseas and bring new and exciting views so hopefully our fans can see the evidence of that this season.”

The winds of change first began to blow at the back end of the 2016 campaign with Dave ‘Blood’ Wessels leading the club as Interim Head Coach for the final three games of the season.

Among the new coaches is the highly experienced Joe Barakat. Barakat comes to the Western Force as the Forwards Coach after two years with Irish powerhouse Ulster and says the prospect of joining the Force was too good to pass up.

The spirited 34-year-old was then appointed Head Coach of the Road Safety Western Force in September and after his first full pre-season in the role ‘Blood’ is eager to see the team put their work into action. “The start of a new season is always an exciting time,” Wessels said. “There is a lot of great energy around the group and all the players and coaches are ready to start playing after preparing for such a long time.” “I think the team has been profoundly effected by the way the Western Australian rugby community has stood by us in some difficult times. The support for the club through the ‘Own the Force’ campaign has been overwhelming so the players are incredibly driven to do those people proud and pay them back for the support they have shown us.” With nine years of professional coaching experience behind him Wessels wasted no time making his mark on the role, actively recruiting the best people possible to help the club on it’s pursuit of excellence. “The first thing I wanted to do this season is get the right people on the bus and that started primarily with the staff. We’ve added Shaun Berne from Leinster, Joe Barkat from Ulster and we now have a fulltime skills coach in Kevin Foote.”

“I enjoyed my time in Ireland but when this opportunity came around I jumped at the chance to get back into Australian Super Rugby as a Forwards Coach and to work in this beautiful city with a great squad.” “I’ve hit the ground running after only joining the team after Christmas. In my short time here so far I’ve already seen the squad’s set piece and breakdown work improve and it will continue to develop.” “We’ve got a fantastic mix of experience and youth in our forwards this season and that drives competition for spots and improves our depth. The forwards dominated throughout the (Buildcorp) NRC and continuing that in Super Rugby is a big goal for us.”

Growing up in Perth I understand how much passion there is for rugby here in WA - Curtis rona Not only has Wessels recruited well in the coaching department but over the course of the off-season has injected a host of new players into the group. “We have 100 more caps of experience at the start of this season than we had the previous year but we also have a lot of new faces which is great,” Wessels said. “We have kept a core group together but added 15 new players to the squad including real talents like Tatafu Polota-Nau, Isireli Naisarani, Chance Peni and many others that will add to our firepower this season.” One man who is sure to add firepower to the Force line-up this season is former Gloucester centre, Bill Meakes. A former Australian Under 20’s and Sevens representative Meakes joins the Force after three successful seasons in the English Premiership and says playing Super Rugby has always been his goal. “I enjoyed my time in England but I still had that burning desire to play Super Rugby,” Meakes said. “It was something I aspired to growing up and when the opportunity presented itself I jumped on it straight away and I’m pumped to play the fast paced style Super Rugby is famous for.” “I’m really excited about the backline we have this year, we have a bunch of new players and a new Attack Coach so there is a sense of anticipation about what this season will bring. “With guys coming across from league and some from other Super Rugby clubs plus some local talent it takes some time to learn about each other but we are gelling really well together.” One of the fore mentioned rugby league converts who is set to take Super Rugby by storm in the Force backline this season is local product, Curtis Rona. Born in New Zealand, raised in Perth, Rona was a member of the Western Force Academy before switching to rugby league. After three full seasons in the NRL where he proved to be a try scoring machine crossing for 40 tries in 57 appearances the Wanneroo Rugby Club product is chomping at the bit to begin his next chapter in the 15-man code.

“I’ve always had a passion for rugby ever since I was a junior and to come back to the West was a great opportunity for me and my family. I see it as the perfect way for me to come back into the rugby scene.” “It’s been a really challenging transition but something I’m enjoying, it’s just all about studying hard to learn the structures, understand your role and being able to nail that every single time.” Rona is not alone in making the transition back to union with talented outside back and fellow Aranmore Catholic College product, Chance Peni, also returning to where it all began. “Chance has been a standout in the pre-season and to have someone else here that is going through the same transition as me has been good. We can bounce off each other and help each other learn the systems, build combinations and get everyone on the same page.” With new and existing talent competing for places in every position Rona believes the coaching staff will have a big task on their hands to select a team each week. “It is definitely going to be tough for ‘Blood’ to pick a team with so many quality players in the squad. There is huge competition for places which just takes everyone to the next level and that will only make us a better team.” Looking ahead to his home debut Rona says the moment he runs out in front of the screaming Western Force faithful is something he can’t wait for. “I’ve heard a lot about the Sea of Blue from the other guys so it is going to be a special moment for me. Growing up in Perth I understand how much passion there is for rugby here in WA and how much people love this club, so that first home game is something I’m really looking forward to.” The Western Force will kick off their 2017 Super Rugby campaign away to the Waratahs in Round One on Saturday, 25 February before the first home game of the season in Round Two against the Queensland Reds on Thursday, 2 March.

The Brisbane-born flanker joined the club in 2011 and notched up his 50th cap for the club against the Crusaders in Round Seven last season putting in a man-of-the-match performance. In a cruel blow Cottrell ruptured his ACL in the second last round of the season against the Stormers and will likely be sidelined for much of the 2017 season.

PROFILE Jono Lance is a talented play maker with the ability to direct the attack and control the game as well as create something from nothing with a single piece of brilliance. PROFILE Dave ‘Blood’ Wessels enters his maiden season as Head Coach of the Road Safety Western Force after four seasons with the club including three years as Senior Assistant Coach. At 34 years of age, Wessels has been coaching at the elite level for nine years after beginning his professional coaching career as a consultant for the Stormers in the 2008 season, a year later he took on the assistant coaching role at the University of Cape Town (Ikeys), winning the Varsity Cup and the Western Province League competition for the first time in 37 years. The South African was then lured to the Brumbies in 2012 as their Defence Consultant before joining the Western Force in 2013. Wessels took over as Interim Head Coach of the Western Force for the final three matches of the 2016 Super Rugby season and was officially appointed Head Coach in September of 2016.
