Foundation President VALERIE HASTINGS

Dear Western Alumni and Friends, In my second year as Western Colorado University Foundation President, I remain humble in the journey all of us take in life – different paths to reach our goals, hopes, and dreams. The paths may look different, but one thing remains the same – receiving a quality education from our alma mater, Western Colorado University! Being able to walk around the Campus after over a year of quarantine and masks in our new normal, I am reminded of the journey our students take every day. It warms my heart to know that they are not doing it alone. They have support in the entire Western community from professors to librarians, board members to staff, coaches/mentors to amazing generous donors. We are all part of their journey as those before us were part of ours. I am proud that Western Foundation raised more than $6 million last fiscal year from incredible donors, corporations, and foundations to help our current and future students pave the way for their journeys. It’s the fourth largest amount ever raised in our history, and you were a part of it. On behalf of the Western Colorado University Foundation Board of Directors and staff, we are committed to make the best use and investment of every dollar raised. We share deep gratitude for all you do for our beloved Western. Thank you! Sincerely,

Valerie J. Hastings (’83), CPA President Western Colorado University Foundation

Interim University President NANCY CHISHOLM

Mountaineers, First off, thank you for supporting Western Colorado University during this past academic year! Like you, I have a special affection for this institution that I am proud to call my alma mater. Your support provided access to underrepresented students, created new research and learning opportunities for faculty and students, and launched new initiatives, leading to one of the most successful fundraising years we’ve had at Western…THANK YOU! Since June, I have had the tremendous honor and privilege to serve Western Colorado University as Interim President. I was truly humbled when the Board of Trustees presented this opportunity and have been welcomed warmly by the campus and the community since I arrived in Gunnison. I have focused my efforts on connecting, learning and listening to our faculty, staff and students, as well as reaching out to our Gunnison Valley community and our many stakeholders around the state. This experience has validated my thinking that Western is in good hands both on campus and within the community and poised for a new era of growth. I want to highlight a few of the transformational gifts that were made this past year. First, I want to personally acknowledge Butch Clark’s $4.5M commitment to endow the Clark Fellows program, which supports Masters in Environmental Management students, and the Coldharbour Institute director position. To recognize his generosity, we announced a new name for the school – The Clark Family School of Environment & Sustainability. I’d also like to thank Fritz and Elaine Culver who created a substantial scholarship to support students focused on STEM fields, connecting nicely to our Rady School partnership program. Finally, I’d like to recognize The Anschutz Corporation for providing core samples and data to enhance our geology student learning experience. Each of these gifts, along with more than 4,000 other gifts received this year, helped elevate the student experience at Western. As we look ahead, we are focusing our attention on two key funding initiatives that I am excited to share: Gunnison Valley Promise (GVP) and The Mountaineer Bowl. The Gunnison Valley Promise is an opportunity to provide our local high school graduates a tuition-free education at Western. Secondly, the Mountaineer Bowl is in dire need of renovation as this highly visible facility hosts football games, track and field meets, community celebrations, commencement, and many other activities. We are working to identify private funding to launch these important initiatives. Finally, I want to share with you how inspiring it has been to see firsthand the impact private support has on our institution. From the grateful students I’ve met that received critical scholarship support making their enrollment possible to our endowed faculty positions that offer expanded and crucial research and learning experiences, private dollars provide a margin of excellence and distinction that allows Western to provide a unique, intimate, and hands-on student experience we’ve become known for. As we launch the search for a new President, your continued support demonstrates an inspired and generous constituent base that can serve as an asset to attract strong candidates. Thank you again for your generous support!

Foundation Executive Director TOM BURGGRAF

The Journey We Take Together It’s common to talk about taking a journey. The people of Western actually take it. In Robert Frost’s words, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” Many love those words. Western people live them. Western people let go of the familiar to grasp the rare, release safety and clutch adventure. They know that to become what no one else has been, to do what no one else has done, means they cannot go where everyone else has gone. We leave convenience to find our calling. Other’s journeys set the sky as the destination. The Western journey starts there. Did we choose the path or did the path choose us? It connected us with fellow travelers who shaped our lives in ways the path never could. Professors, coaches, mentors, friends, teammates, roommates, life-mates – we had to chart our own course, yet we were never alone. We learned to travel light – only that which you can hold in your head, heart and hands. And what is always within reach was not a phone, but a friend. “Leave no trace” is the way we camp and hike. “Leave your mark” is the way we journey so others who follow us can find their way. Many gave us that same kindness, direction, sign-posts, trail markers, encouragement and companionship. It is our honor and privilege to do the same. If you were here on campus, you would be stunned by the current Western students. They are delightful and driven dreamers with lofty goals and an unquenchable work ethic. Their potential and courage are complemented with kindness and a refreshing, authentic humility. There is no entitlement, just enthusiasm. You would see more than one about whom you would say, “That is a younger version of me!” You would be right. And for their journey, they aspire to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for giving for and supporting them. Because for many students, without you, their educational journeys would end prematurely. You helped give more than $6 million last year, most of which was for scholarships so they could journey on. The journey that Western people take sets us apart, even as it draws us together. We look back to learn. We look forward to dream. And we look beside us for the friends who make the journey a joy and who fill us with hope. I wish every blessing to you as you share your blessings. Thank you for being on this journey with them and with us – “… And that has made all the difference.” Warm and grateful regards,

Tom Burggraf Executive Director Western Colorado University Foundation

Mountaineer Gala After two years without formal gatherings, alumni and friends convened on June 5, 2021 to honor Peter A. Dea (’76) for his legacy of success and leadership, as well as his alma mater, Western Colorado University. Peter has always embodied the highest levels of excellence that have earned our respect; maintained joy, warmth, and compassion that have gained our affection; and his generosity inspires our hearts. Western is proud and grateful to have him as an example to future generations of students.

Peter A. Dea Peter A. Dea, Duane Vandenbusche, Joanie Todd Tom Burggraf,

In front of a large audience, Dr. Duane Vandenbusche awarded Peter the 2nd Annual Award of Excellence at Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado. It was a beautiful evening of celebration. Prior to the evening, Ron (’81) and Karen Leach, plus an anonymous donor, instituted a $40,000 match to be raised at the event. Joanie Todd (’85) facilitated a ‘paddle raise’ garnering a record $141,000 for student scholarships. To kick off the match without flinching, Jeff (’75) and Karen Holway raised their paddle for the $20,000. Others followed suit. The event as a whole, raised an unprecedented $181,000.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS

Butch Clark Gift New Name for School of Environment & Sustainability

The generosity of one family has led to a name change for a Western school. Western Colorado University leaders voted on May 7, 2021 to unanimously name its Environment & Sustainability School after longtime benefactors. The school will now be known as the Clark Family School of Environment & Sustainability. The relationship between the Clark family and Western began in 1999, when Ralph E. Clark, Jr. offered an initial gift of $1,000 to support environmental studies. Two years later in 2001, he gave another $100,000 to boost a fledgling Environment & Sustainability major at Western. In 2013, Ralph’s son Butch Clark took up the mantel, creating a new model for education. Through generous land and financial contributions, he founded a nonprofit organization by the name of “Coldharbour Institute,” to be supported by university faculty and students. Clark donated 334 acres along the Tomichi River and a historic home approximately seven miles east of Gunnison to create the Coldharbour Institute. His intent was to restore and protect the character of the land and its ecosystems. In the years to follow, Butch Clark made regular contributions, helping to fund a faculty position and numerous “Clark Fellowships” for students seeking a Masters in Environmental Management (MEM) from Western. Coldharbour became the learning laboratory for those students in a symbiotic relationship between the nonprofit and university. “Butch believes in creative solutions for the community that comes out of the synergy between a nonprofit and a university,” said school Dean John Hausdoerffer, Ph.D. “This gift just solidifies his commitment to this partnership and his faith in it.”

“Butch has been passionate about blessing people and the planet through Western’s School of Environment & Sustainability. And since the planet was already named, we figured we’d name the School for Butch and his family. Butch is a humble and quiet man who deserves the loudest and proudest applause for the way he gives to others and to the planet.”—Tom Burggraf

Collectively, the Clark gift totals approximately $4.5 million, with $2 million of it serving as an endowment, generating about $100,000 annually in interest as a revenue stream for the program (the remainder will come through Butch’s estate). His immediate gift will annually provide: • $25,000 per year for Clark Fellows (the MEM program will continue to give $25,000 per year in match); • $30,000 per year for the Coldharbour chair currently held by MJ Pickett (and MEM matches that to make it full-time—adding her teaching, mentoring and campus service to her Coldharbour executive director duties); • $30,000 per year for the Sustainable Development chair currently held by Luke Danielson, a half-time position; • $15,000 per year to enhance MEM project funding, elevating projects from Coldharbour to the far reaches of the globe (and helping fund the 25,000 hours of annual MEM projects). Butch requested the name of the School be inclusive of his whole family, namely his wife Judy, who passed away three and a half years ago, and his father. “Butch, his father Ralph and his late wife Judy have given so generously to fund student-driven projects to make a more sustainable world and to fund faculty who transform student leadership roles,” said Hausdoerffer. “But Butch also has given [his] whole heart and mind in elevating environmental education at Western for 20 years. Butch’s presence in the Gunnison Country is truly transformative, now celebrated with this transformative gift and naming.” Written by: Chris Rourke 18

Ethel Rice Gift Retired Librarian Can Lift Athletes

At other schools, it may be easy to picture a university librarian at odds with student-athletes. Not at Western. Western’s retired, career-librarian, Ethel Rice, sets the record straight. “Our NCAA athletes are some of Western’s top students! They have a higher average GPA than the rest of the student body. They are as serious about their academics as they are about their athletics. I want to help them as much as I can.” Ethel, a Western alumna of the class of 1963, went on to work at the Savage Library for decades, and upon her retirement, helped lead the Western Foundation for two terms on the Board of Directors. She funded the University’s first endowed faculty chair in Art (through an estate designation) and has established and endowed several scholarships across campus, most recently her second scholarship for student-athletes. “It gives me great joy to help these student-athletes.”—Ethel Rice “Aunt Ethel amazes me. We consider her family at the Foundation.” added Tom Burggraf, Western Foundation’s Executive Director. “She is a diminutive person in physical stature, but she can lift numerous student-athletes without breaking a sweat. She enjoys lifting up the students, faculty, sports, and programs she believes in. I am so thankful that she believes in Western. We believe in you, Aunt Ethel, as a Hall of Fame donor and a friend who deeply enriches our lives.”

Bob Austin Gift Shining the Spotlight on Students Bob Austin was the closest thing to a Western celebrity during his student days, as a lead actor in countless plays and campus productions. Now, Bob is shining the spotlight on current Western students who share his passion for theater, and giving them the opportunity to thrive as he did.

“Bob is among the most caring, encouraging and generous people I have ever known. His love for Western and its people is remarkable.” —Tom Burggraf

“Western was such an inspiration for me,” said Bob Austin. “Most of all, it was Dr. Jess Gern (the late Chairman of Western’s Arts and Humanities Department). He was such a treasure. I established the Beta/Gern Scholarship in the 1990’s, and I continue to invest in that to celebrate his memory and the transforming impact he had on my life.” Bob founded and led Beta Engineering in Arlington, Texas and is part of the Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing Industry. In retirement, Bob enjoys golf, travel and time with his family. He particularly enjoys investing in the lives of Western’s students. Bob turns 81 years young in November of 2021 and faces each day with positivity and generosity. Recently, Bob generously added a $25,000 gift to the Beta/Gern Scholarship endowment at Western Foundation so Western could reach and assist even more students in Dr. Gern’s memory. “To future students, I would say – If you’re undecided in life and wondering where you belong, there’s no place better than Western. You can try anything. You get a one-on-one relationship with professors who will teach and mentor you. You’re not just a number at Western.” —Bob Austin Shirley and Bob Austin

Marsden Media

“Bob is among the most caring, encouraging and generous people I have ever known. His love for Western and its people is remarkable. Bob truly wants to make the world a better place, and he is doing exactly that! My great appreciation for my friend, Bob Austin, is surpassed only by my affection for him.” said Tom Burggraf, the Foundation’s Executive Director.

PLANNING & GIFTING

The IRS Wants Your IRA (Hint: Don’t give it to them) Your IRA May be a BAD Choice to Leave to Your Loved Ones, but a GREAT Choice to Leave to Western. You might be surprised to learn who pays for the great benefits of your IRA. Tax free investing? Tax deferred growth? Your heirs pay for them, if you leave your IRA to them in your will. Your IRA escaped the IRS’s grasp temporarily, unless you do this: • Fund your IRA with your pre-tax dollars • Grow and appreciate your IRA with tax-deferred dollars The IRS will collect their taxes when your IRA makes any distributions. If you leave your IRA to your heirs, they will pay tax on each and every dollar they receive from it. “Even if my estate doesn’t qualify for estate taxes?” Yes. “So my heirs will only receive a portion of my IRA and a portion will go to taxes?” Correct. “What is the one thing I can do to keep the IRS’s grasp off my IRA?” Make Western Colorado University Foundation the beneficiary of your IRA, and ZERO taxes will be paid. Leave your heirs other assets that can be passed directly to them with no tax basis, and use your IRA for your charitable goals, to establish your lasting legacy at Western. ATTENTION: You must change the beneficiary(ies) on your IRA to reflect your wishes. It is not enough just to simply mention in your will that you intend Western Foundation to receive all or a percentage of your IRA. If your will does not agree with the stated beneficiary(ies) of your IRA, often the statement of beneficiary(ies) on your IRA account will determine how it is distributed, regardless of what your will says. Inherited IRAs represent one of the most complicated assets to leave to your loved ones, and WILL result in tax implications for them even if your estate is beneath the level of being assessed an estate tax. It is stricter than the already-strict rules of an IRA plan. Several wise alumni donors and investors have chosen to leave their IRAs to Western Colorado University Foundation to endow a scholarship in their memory, rather than to loved ones, for this very reason. For more information on how you can do the same, please contact Tom Burggraf at tburggraf@western.edu. It can be tax-wise as well as life-wise to give to Western. Thank you! Western Colorado University Foundation does not give legal or financial planning advice. Please consult your financial advisor or estate attorney.

Cryptocurrency Will You Be Western’s First Cryptocurrency Donor? Cryptocurrency is in the news often. Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum and others are becoming increasingly popular and are speculative investments for some. In fact, more than 21 million Americans own cryptocurrency! And while the volatility of crypto puts it outside of the risk tolerance of Western Foundation for endowment investments, it doesn’t prevent us from accepting gifts of cryptocurrency and immediately converting them to cash to bless and elevate Western’s students, programs, and mission. On October 8, 2021, the Western Colorado University Foundation Board of Directors voted to amend our gift-acceptance policy to securely accept immediately converted gifts of cryptocurrency. Western Foundation joined with elite private institutions like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, MIT and Penn in accepting gifts of crypto. It was essential that we minimize the risk for Western. We partnered with a respected nonprofit vendor Every.Org to: • Securely receive gifts of cryptocurrency from our donors • Provide a donation receipt to you as soon as the transaction is detected in the network • Convert your cryptocurrency gift into cash immediately • Wire the cash to Western Foundation for expenditure or investment, per your direction Are you into crypto? If so, Western Foundation wants to give you the opportunity to give it for the educations, lives and futures of our students. Western Foundation is ready and able to safely and securely accept your gift of cryptocurrency! Does it make tax sense to use crypto to make your gift? Yes! Cryptocurrencies are like any appreciated asset, including securities and real estate, in terms of taxes. No taxes are owed on the capital gains of assets donated to a charity, so the Western Foundation effectively receives more money, and you pay less taxes. Just as with appreciated stock, if you have held the cryptocurrency asset for more than one year, the tax deduction for your gift will be equal to the fair market value of the donated cryptocurrency (as determined by a qualified appraisal). How do you do it? Simply go to Western.edu/alumni/foundation and click the button “Donate Cryptocurrency” and follow the instructions to complete your donation through Coinbase Commerce with your Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Dai, Ethereum, Litecoin, or USD Coin. Only one special person will go down in Western’s history as the first to donate cryptocurrency. Will it be you? Western Colorado University Foundation does not give legal or financial planning advice. Please consult your financial advisor or estate attorney.

Reflect Your Values Through Your Will It’s More Than a Piece of Paper

A will is the most important document you can create. Though often seen as simply a legal document that only those trained to read it can understand, it is so much more. Your will is your legacy. It dictates how you will be remembered and can be created to reflect your values. That’s why, no matter your age or wealth status, you should be sure to take time to consider this important document this year. Use your will to: • Name a guardian for minor children and dependent adults • Dictate how you want your assets to be distributed • Ensure your pets are taken care of • Reduce the administrative expenses of your estate • Make sure your support continues for the organizations you love like Western Foundation There’s an easy way for you to continue supporting our work without giving anything today – include a gift to Western Colorado University Foundation in your will.

Advantages of a Gift in Your Will • Simplicity - As little as one sentence in your will or living trust is all that is needed to complete your gift. • Flexibility - Until your will or trust goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans as needed to reflect life’s changes. • Versatility - You can give a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events, or a percentage of your estate.

Here’s How It Works

Your estate planning attorney can help you structure a gift so your loved ones will be taken care of first after you’ve passed. They will include special language in the will or living trust you create or add it to existing documents through an amendment called a codicil.

A Gift in Your Estate Plan Is Right for You If: • You want to make sure your support of Western Foundation continues after your lifetime. • You want to balance your generosity to us with an assurance that loved ones are taken care of first. • You want to maintain the flexibility to change your mind about your gift at any time.

Already Have a Will?

Great! Make sure it is up to date. It’s a good idea to review your will regularly or when you experience a life event such as a marriage, birth, or move. This makes sure your will accomplishes what you want and takes your current state’s law into consideration.

You Can Create Your Own Scholarship! Have You Ever Dreamed of Having a Scholarship at Western in Your Name?

Have you ever wanted the deep fulfillment of meeting a deserving student whose Western education you’re helping make possible? It’s easier than you might think. In fact, if you can afford to give at least $84 monthly, it’s well within your reach! Here’s how:

Define Your Passion

What type of student do you most wish to help? Is it a first-generation student with deep financial need? A student majoring in your favorite discipline/department? A student-athlete in a particular sport? A star student, academically and/or athletically? Your passion defines your scholarship. We will put your selection criteria into a Letter of Agreement that keeps you, the Foundation, Financial Aid and any specified Department on the same page. You may change the letter of agreement at any time.

Choose Your Giving Level • Do you wish to make a monthly, annual or one-time gift? • Can you give $84 monthly or $1,000 or more annually? Then we can create a named annual scholarship and award $1,000 to your student as long as your gifts continue. • Are you in a position to make a more significant gift at one time (in the range of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 or greater)? Then perhaps you’d like to create a quasi-endowment that will generate interest-revenue that will be distributed year after year.

Meet and Encourage Your Student Recipient(s) • You will receive the name of your scholarship recipient(s) in an annual letter we send you, as well as a letter of thanks from your students(s). • We will help you write a “Story Behind the Scholarship” document that tells your story, why you chose to create this scholarship, and what you hope it will accomplish in the life of the recipient(s). The “Story Behind the Scholarship” is given to every student who receives a privately-funded scholarship. • The Foundation hosts a “Celebration of Giving” dinner each year, usually in late October or early November. It’s a Thanksgiving-themed, family-style banquet in the University Center Ballroom, seating scholarship donors and their recipient(s). It’s a joyful and memorable evening of great food, thanks, laughter, and often tears of appreciation – and you’ll be invited!

Interdisciplinary Ethics Bootcamp For the Fall 2021 semester, the Ethics Champions at Western focused on involving other disciplines on campus in order to share and advance the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative’s (DFEI) principles. The Champions proposed and received support from the School of Business and the Rady School of Computer Science & Engineering for planning an Ethics Bootcamp mainly for incoming freshmen to the three disciplines. The Ethics Bootcamp idea was driven by the belief that students from the three disciplines have to collaborate in the marketplace to design, improve, and/or market products. To collaborate effectively, students need to understand the ethical dilemmas each party faces. It is the hope of the Ethics Champions and organizers that the Ethics Bootcamp develops participants’ sensitivity to ethical issues faced by the collaborators. Additionally, the Ethics Champions hope that the competing teams enjoy this friendly case competition and are encouraged to participate in the Fall’s Ethics Case Competition on the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs (UCCS) campus. The 2021 Ethics Bootcamp was scheduled for Friday, September 17, 2021. Early September students were alerted to the upcoming Ethics Bootcamp and by the September 9, 2021 deadline, a total of 33 students indicated interest in participating. A total of 18 students formed six teams. While originally intended for freshmen, this first year Bootcamp also allowed upper-classmen. In an organizational meeting on Monday, September 13, 2021, each team received information about Bill Daniels, the DFEI, the DFEI Ethics Principles, a copy of the Besla-Pear case from the Daniels Fund casebank, and a case presentation rubric. Each group had until Friday, September 17, 2021 to prepare their case analyses for presentations to a six-member expert panel. Five teams ended up competing for the $100 first place prize (per student) provided by DFEI. The expert panel included two faculty members from Western’s School of Business, one each from Western’s Rady Schools of Computer Science and Engineering, and two PhD students from the University of Denver’s Daniels School of Business. The introduction to Bill Daniels, the Daniels Fund, and the DFEI Ethics Principles should guide the students not only in the analyses of the ethical dilemmas presented in the Bootcamp’s case competition, but also in their future studies and careers. To measure the impact of the Ethics Bootcamp, participating students completed a survey on Friday after working on the ethical dilemma over the previous week. Data from the participating students will be compared with data from a control group of students that did not participate in this ethics event. The event has been made possible by financial support from the Western Schools of Business, Computer Science & Engineering as well as by the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Collegiate Program at UCCS College of Business. Western Colorado University is a member of the DFEI at UCCS Southern Colorado Ethics Consortium. “I am very proud of our ethics champions, professors Mann, Vieregge, and Deboer, for their efforts in initiating this event. This Bootcamp created the first opportunity for the School of Business to collaborate with the new Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering. I firmly believe this event and others like it help our students to be able to make better informed and ethical decisions.”—Pete Sherman, Dean, School of Business Written by: Pete Sherman

Athletics The Western Colorado Athletics 2020-21 season was one unlike any other – mainly due to the uncertainty that came with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Mountaineers persevered and the majority of the programs enjoyed a good season. In the fall, the Western Colorado cross country teams were stellar per usual. The women’s team won its eighth RMAC championship (first since 2011); and while there wasn’t a national championship due to COVID-19, the Mountaineer women finished the year ranked first in the national coaches’ poll. On the men’s side, the Mountaineers took second at the RMAC Championships and finished the season ranked second in the national poll. The other sport to see action in the fall was football, as it played one game – a loss at Division-I FCS Stephen F. Austin. In the winter, the women’s basketball team earned its secondconsecutive and second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and were ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation, finishing the season 14-6. The men’s basketball program went 6-12 on the season, but were battling for an RMAC Tournament spot going into the last weekend of the season. As for wrestling, sophomore Patrick Allis highlighted the season for the Mountaineers – taking fifth place at the NCAA Division II Championships at 133 pounds and earning his second-consecutive All-American honors while finishing the year 10-5. The indoor track and field team at nationals witnessed Charlie Sweeney and Taylor Stack each earn All-American honors in the 10,000 and 5,000 while the DMR team of Evan Sutherland, Adrian Iribe, Gage Mayo and Jonathan Specht took eighth to earn All-American honors. As for swimming and diving, Savannah Tice was an All-American in the 200 backstroke, taking fifth at the NCAA Championships. In the spring season, volleyball and women’s soccer joined outdoor track for the Mountaineers. Volleyball qualified for the RMAC Tournament for the first time since 2015 and finished the season going 6-8. The women’s soccer team played its debut season at the new Katy O. Rady Field and went 1-8 on the season. The outdoor track and field team ended the Western Colorado Athletics season with a bang – having two individual national champions. Bailey Sharon broke the Western Colorado record in winning the NCAA Division II title in the 800 with a time of 2:04.23 – the first time a Mountaineer has won a national title in an event less than 1,500 meters. On the men’s side, Taylor Stack won the national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:41.72 – 13 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and third-fastest time in Western Colorado history. Sharon, Kaiya Firor, Mackenzie Burt, and Kelia Portis earned All-American honors in the 4x400-meter relay as well, finishing with a school-record time of 3:44.56 while becoming the only relay team in school history to earn outdoor All-American honors. In Memoriam

Mariah Green David Gorsuch Doc Hahn Duke Iverson

We mourned the passing of our Western family members in 2020-21. Please join us in remembering these friends.

Mariah Green (’06) On a cold January morning, at 29 weeks pregnant, Mariah Green was flown from Gunnison Valley Hospital to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction due to serious complications with her pregnancy. Extensive testing and a biopsy revealed cancer. She chose to wait on treatment until her son, Liam (meaning “strong-willed warrior”), could grow strong. He was born at 32 weeks. As Liam grew and thrived, Mariah fought to do the same. After several rounds of external and internal radiation and chemotherapy, along with careful nutrition and prayer, Mariah faced each day with relentless hope and optimism, often comforting those who intended to comfort her. Mariah walked through her dark valley with the faith, grace, and gentle confidence that characterized her life. She entered the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at the age of 37. Mariah was a light for her family, the Foundation, Western, Gunnison, and all who knew her. Mariah wrote her own obituary, to spare her family the pain of doing so which will surprise no one who knew her: Mariah Gene Green (Besecker) was born on July 31, 1983 in Gunnison, Colorado. An independent and focused child, she carried these traits into adulthood. Her personality was greatly influenced by her two older brothers who stood by her until the end. Her life, although relatively short to some, was jam packed full of love, adventures and more recently, faith. She enjoyed playing sports, competition, traveling and the most important job she held, being a mom. Kyler (16), Peyson (6) and Liam (18 months), brought complete purpose and were the lime lights of her life. She attended Western State College (now Western Colorado University) and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She loved Western and bled Crimson and Slate. She had the opportunity to work one summer at Denali National Park in Alaska, backpack around Europe, traveled to 20 different countries: Figi, Egypt and Panama to name a few. She and Christian Green wed in June 2010. She went on to work at Western as an admissions counselor — where she got to travel around Colorado and the USA — academic advisor and career services coordinator. Most recently she had the privilege of working for the Western Colorado University Foundation. She got her master’s degree and enjoyed learning and country swing dancing with her husband. She is survived by her incredible family: husband Christian Green; children Kyler, Peyson, Liam; parents Rick and Gloria Besecker; brothers Sean (Christy) Besecker and kids, Jerad (Olivia) Besecker, grandma, Gene Schelly, aunts and uncles. She is being greeted at Heaven’s gate by her grandpa, Tom Schelly and aunt, Patty Schelly. Donations can be made at WesternUp.org via check to the Western Foundation, PO Box 1264, Gunnison, CO 81230. Reference Mariah Green Memorial. Approximately 350 people attended her Celebration of Life on Western’s campus on July 24, 2021. We loved and treasured Mariah, personally and professionally. If you knew Mariah, chances are, you loved her, too. She was that kind of person. We are deeply grieving the loss of the friend whom we love so dearly. And that is tempered with equally deep gratitude that we had the blessing to be a part of her beautiful life. We will carry on in deep gratitude for the gift of Mariah. 36

“Thank you for all the love the main lessons God felt I Quote excerpt taken from th

you have shared with me and my family. I have learned so much and am humbled by humanity. I think this might be one of I needed to learn. You each hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you!”—Mariah Green he CaringBridge blog Mariah kept during her cancer journey.

David Gorsuch (’64)

David Gorsuch passed away on June 26, 2021 in Vail. He was a member of the Leadville Sports Hall of Fame. Gorsuch was born in Climax on Sept. 22, 1938. Born into a mining community located at 11,300 feet in altitude, Gorsuch embraced skiing at the age of two. As a result, he enjoyed a long and successful career starting at the junior level and extending through college and into the international arena. He was the youngest skier ever to participate in the Junior Nationals. He won the U.S. Junior National Slalom Championship in 1953 and the Junior National Combined Championship in 1954 and 1956, was a member of the 1958 World Championship Ski Team, and the 1960 Olympic Alpine Ski Team. In 1963, while skiing for Western State College, he was the NCAA downhill champion, earned a silver medal in slalom, and finished second in the alpine combined. The following year, he placed the Mountaineers to a second place team finish by 38

Chad Reich

placing second in slalom and third in giant slalom. The former mountain manager at Crested Butte, Gorsuch helped build and define the sport of skiing in Colorado and beyond for over five decades. In 1962, Gorsuch and his wife Renie founded Gorsuch Ltd., a specialty ski and retail shop in Gunnison. For over 40 years, Gorsuch, Ltd. has introduced generations of skiers to the beauty and magic that is skiing in Colorado with stores now in Vail, Aspen, Beaver Creek, Snowmass, and Park City. Moving to the Vail Valley in May 1966, Gorsuch was one of the early leaders and personalities that helped map and establish Vail as the world-class ski destination it has become. Gorsuch was inducted into the Western State College Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Leadville Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. WESTERNUP.ORG

Frederick James “Doc” Hahn

Frederick James “Doc” Hahn, called Jim by his family but known as “Doc” by his Western Colorado University Family, passed away in Gunnison, Colorado on May 22, 2021. Doc was a staple in the Mountaineer community, serving as a professor in the School of Business from 1969-2008, actively joining many committees on campus, was the faculty representative to the Board of Trustees, and was Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball team from 1982-1992. During his coaching career, Doc racked up 113 victories - including 63 RMAC wins setting Western Colorado women’s basketball records. He was inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Doc led the Mountaineers to their best season in program history in 1986-87, winning a school-record 22 games (which included a Western-record 12-game winning streak) while winning the RMAC title - Western’s last conference title. The years from 1986-1987 were in the middle of a run of five consecutive seasons where the Mountaineers advanced to the postseason, the longest streak in program history. In the business school, Doc was a beloved professor and icon. Even after his retirement in 2008, he stayed active as an emeritus professor and was generous to students, providing funds to individuals who had trouble paying for books or were encountering life challenges. Jim “Doc” Hahn is survived by his sister Esther P. Lerner of Lawrence, Kansas, and his nephew Michael G. Lerner of Richmond, Indiana. He will be missed and his memory treasured by all who knew him. Duke and his wife, Rita, loved to travel. They spent the past 12 years exploring the United States, coaching football in several countries throughout Europe and traveling to Australia multiple times to visit his daughters and their families. Duke also enjoyed visiting with and attending his grandkids’ events including sports games, track meets, concerts, plays, recitals, and graduations.

Mason Schultz

Duke had cherished relationships with everyone who crossed his path and many will say he was the most intelligent person they ever met. He is credited with writing his doctoral thesis on tree fungus and was a contributing author to Snow Lovers Guide to Winter Sports (Prentice-Hall, 1979). His celebration of life was held at Mountaineer Bowl and attended by a great number of football alumni and friends from around the country. Welcome to our new staff members! Mackenzie Bode (’19)

Joy Kean The mountains were calling. After years on the West Coast, a majority of her time spent in a small, college town, Joy and her husband, Joseph, relocated to the Gunnison Valley in 2018 after taking a 10-day scenic road trip through Colorado. It was love at first sight. Formally the Executive Assistant to the CEO of the Boys & Girls Club in Carlsbad, California and then most recently as the Executive Assistant to the President here at Western, Joy brings her expertise in business, philanthropy, and CRM management. As the new Philanthropy Services Officer, she handles all incoming donations, serves as the board liaison and executive assistant, and also helps with donor relations and events. Besides her passion for this beautiful Valley and expanding University, she loves to talk wine, food, traveling (she worked on a cruise ship!), and would love to hear if you have a new scenic area or trail her and her family, including little one, Clementine, should check out! A skilled professional with a warm heart (even in the coldest of days in the Valley), we are grateful to have her on board.

To Our Donors

Mackenzie is a 2019 Western alumna, a bold learner, undercover cowgirl, and the Foundation’s Annual Giving and Scholarship Officer. Originally from Fort Collins, CO, Mackenzie knew she was a small-town girl at heart, made to thrive at altitude in wide open spaces, and loves running into you at the grocery store! She chose to attend Western Colorado University and has called Gunnison home ever since. Graduating with a Bachelors in Business Administration, an emphasis in Marketing, and minor in Recreation and Outdoor Education, Executive Director, Tom Burggraf, describes her as, “a walking Western mission statement!” As a student, Mackenzie was heavily involved as the Club Sports President, a beginner on the figure skating team, a Director for Campus Recreation on the Student Government Association, the WCU Hockey team’s #1 fan, a founding member of Business Fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon, a friendly face at the Bookstore and volunteer Marketing Coordinator for the Cattlemen’s Days Rodeo. As our newest staff member at the Foundation, Mackenzie gracefully empowers all of our annual giving programs and will be the liaison for donors and departments for our skyrocketing number of privately-funded scholarships. Outside of her passion for Western, you can find Mackenzie practicing a new hobby, working as the Development and Media Director for Cattlemen’s Days Tough Enough to Wear Pink or riding through the Cochetopa Hills on her horse!

From the Foundation Staff May your 2022 be full of good health, happiness, and joy! We truly appreciate all you have done to change the lives of Western students, and in turn, making our work extremely meaningful. Warmly: Tom, Catherine, Pam, Mackenzie, and Joy
