CHINCHILLA MELON FESTIVAL The 2017 Chinchilla Melon Festival will be held again from 16-19 February 2017, so get your melons ready for an action packed, fun filled weekend of events. The Festival kicks off with the Time Travelling Trivia Night on the 11th of February – get your team ready for some great prizes. Monday night is the Lapunyah Art Gallery’s Art & Craft Preview with a wine and cheese night where you can see the winners of the competition. Thursday morning you can catch a bus to a Melon Farm or participate in an Origin of Gas Tour. A Luncheon with special guest speaker Dame Quentin Bryce also begins at 11am at the Cultural Centre. Thursday evening you can attend the Movie Night Premiere of “Hidden Figures” at the Iron Bark Theatre at
the Chinchilla Cultural Centre or watch some Melon Cricket at the Recreation Grounds. Friday sees lots of things to do - play a round of golf, or at 3pm in Fuller Place the weighing of the Big Melon takes place. Friday evening features a new event Friday Festival Feast featuring a three course meal on the Primary School Oval. There is also the Melon Rodeo at the Showgrounds, the Melon Fest Beach Party at the Club Hotel or David Barry at the Chinchilla RSL. The kids can watch a Movie on the big screen as well. Saturday is the main day of the Festival which starts off with a hearty breakfast cooked by the Chinchilla Branch of the Cancer Council whilst listening to the bush Poets in Fuller Place. The Street parade follows this, and you can wander around Chinchilla’s CBD and check out the many Market stalls and lots of
entertainment. There is kids entertainment and Saturday sees FMX Stunt Bikes for the first time at the festival. You can participate in a Melon Event or sit back and relax and watch the Free Family Concert on Saturday night which will feature Woodshed, Gina Horswood & The Delta Riggs. The festival winds up on Sunday and sees more Bush Poetry at the Chinchilla Museum, a Combined Church Service at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre featuring Deborah Acason (Olympic Weightlifter), Jazz at the Museum and markets at the Tourist Information Centre. BIG MELON WEIGH IN 2015 winner Chris Davies and wife Steph, with the monster melon weighing 63.5KG! Bernie and Matt Davies still hold the record for the events biggest ever melon from 2007, their melon weighing 87.5kg. Entry to the competition is free and open to anyone, so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be a grower to enter. There is a $500 cash prize up for grabs, donated by the Australia Melon Association. The Big Melon weigh in will be on February 17 at Fuller Place at 3pm.
