What is your leadership style and coaching philosophy?

Q&A WITH COACH VILLANO

Our leadership style and coaching philosophy revolves around preparation. The only thing that you can really control as a coach or as a player is how well and methodically you prepare. We like to make sure that all lines of communication are open within the coaching staff as well as between the coaching staff and the players. We will constantly continue to teach and work on the fundamentals and make sure these are focused on each day in practice as well as in game situations.

What types of goals and expectations have you set for the team this year? Our goals and expectations will never change. Our goals all focus on getting a little bit better everyday. Making sure we understand as a program what is important and that everyone on the team understands what they can do to help this team be successful both on and off the field.

Describe the ideal Western Illinois baseball player? The ideal player for this program is one that brings it everyday. A guy that is a true gym rat and nothing feels better to them than competing on the baseball field. We want players that have aspirations to play in the big leagues. Guys that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to leave their heart on the field and play with a passion and true love for the game.

How does a tough non-conference schedule prepare you for Summit League action? We do and always will play a difficult out of conference schedule. Who we are playing is not what we will be thinking of. Everyday is an opportunity to get better. We will come to play a certain way and style regardless of what uniform our opponent is wearing.

Under his guidance, the Leatherneck pitching staff lowered its ERA by more than two full runs in 2010. Leatherneck pitchers also cut down on walks, allowing just 213 free passes in 431.2 innings (4.4 BB/9), down from 218 in 380.1 innings (5.2 BB/9) the previous year. Coryell also helped the team cut its opponents’ batting average by nearly 40 points and the Leathernecks struck out 260 batters, up from 235 the previous season. Before coming to Western, Coryell worked as a scout with the Cincinnati Reds while also serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Grand Rapids Community College. He was on the coaching staff at Kellogg Community College in 2008 when the Bears advanced to the Junior College World Series. No stranger to the Division I baseball ranks, Coryell worked for over four years at Eastern Michigan, first as a student assistant coach then as pitching coach/recruiting coordinator for his father, long-time head coach Roger Coryell. He helped turn around the Eagles’ pitching staff from an ERA over 6.00 in 2005 to 4.61 the next season and 4.08 in 2007. Coryell worked with the 2006 MAC Pitcher of the Year (Jeff Fischer) then the next season helped the Eagles set a MAC record for regular season winning percentage going 21-4 and winning the West Division title. That year Eastern finished as the tournament runner-up but logged wins over perennial powers Tennessee, Arizona and Michigan. He coached former MAC Pitcher of the Year Ryan Ford (2004) and MAC Player of the Year Brian Bixler (2004) during his time at Eastern. During his coaching career, Coryell has coached 12 players who have been drafted in the Major League Baseball draft, including Bixler (2nd round), Fischer (10th round) and Ford (15th round). Prior to his time witht he Reds, he also worked as a scout with the Seattle Mariners.

Todd Coryell joined the Western Illinois Baseball staff in January 2010 as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Fighting Leathernecks.

Cooper Stewart is entering his second season with the Western Illinois baseball team. Stewart joined the staff after an extremely successful playing career for the Fighting Leathernecks. He also works with the Leatherneck catchers. In 2010, Stewart helped coach Jason Summers to a league high .423 batting average. In addition, helped John Koszulinski to a team high 49 RBI and six home runs. Koszulinski also ranked third on the team with a .354 batting average. During his four-year playing career at Western, Stewart batted .270 with 67 RBI. He also hit three home runs, four triples and 37 doubles. Stewart ranks fifth in career games played (173), fourth in walks (84), eighth in runs scored (111) and sixth in doubles in Western’s all-time top ten lists. Stewart’s senior campaign in 2009 was the best of his career as the Sterling, Ill., native batted a career best .337 with a career-high 12 doubles. He also committed just six errors in 45 starts behind the plate. In 2008, Stewart finished the season ranked as the 23rd toughest player to strikeout in the nation, striking out just eight times in 144 at-bats. He led the team with 24 walks, threw out 42 percent (16-of-38) of base runners and was named to The Summit League Winter/Spring Academic All-League Team and the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. As a sophomore, Stewart finished the 207 season with a .991 fielding precentage and threw out 37 percent (17-of-45) base stealers while starting in 51 games and was named to The Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. Stewart appeared in 29 games as a freshman in 2006, making 18 starts while recording the third most putouts on the team and recording a .981 fielding percentage to go along with 16 assists. Stewart was a three-time all-conference selection at Sterling High School where he earned four varisty letters and was a two-time team MVP. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and National Honor Roll as a high school student. He earned his bachelors degree from Western Illinois in the fall of 2009 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports management at Western.

Graham Johnson was hired as an assistant coach for the Western Illinois baseball team in August of 2010. He will primarily work with the pitching staff for the Fighting Leathernecks. Johnson was previously the head pitching coach for the East Los Angeles Dodgers in the summer of 2010 where he oversaw development of all pitchers within the program. He was associated with two different teams during his time with the organization. He was the associate head coach for a team that was made of Junior College players and the other team was a mixture of all levels of college athletes From 2008-10 he was also the head pitching and outfield coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., where he also served as the Academic Success Coordinator. Johnson also coached at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. as the head pitching coach in 2007-08, where he created weekly starting rotations and helped define bullpen roles. He was also the assistant baseball coach and junior varsity basketball coach at Canton High School from 2003-08. Johnson played collegiately for Culver-Stockton from 2004-07, helping the team achieve an overall record of 157-84 during his four seasons there. The Wildcats won three HAAC Tournament Championships, two regular season titles, appeared in three Region V playoffs and one NAIA Super Regional Playoff. Johnson graduated from Culver-Stockton with a bachelor’s degree in secondary biology educationin 2007. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Lindenwood University in education while specializing in strength and conditioning in 2010.

Stanford D. Hyman

September 26, 1958 - September 5, 2009

In 2007, Coach Hyman led Western to its first winning season since 1989. In addition, the Leathernecks recorded the first winning record on the road in school history.

The Leathernecks finished in second-place during the regular season in the Mid-Continent Conference. Hyman bring home his second MidCon Coach of the Year award in 2007. Hyman also coached Western’s first Mid-Con Player of the Year since 1990, as Travis Check brought home the honor.

January 19, 1989 - May 4, 2010 On May 4, 2010, junior pitcher Devin VanBrooker died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Macomb. He transfered to Western from College of Lake County in 2008. In his first collegiate start, VanBrooker led the Leathernecks to a series-clinching win at Furman. He also earned the win in his next start against Stephen F. Austin (at the Sooner Classic), pitching five strong innings. Eight of his nine starts were during weekend series. He did not allow a walk in his first 16.0 innings pitched, ranking among the national leaders at the time. VanBrooker led Western to a Summit League win over North Dakota State on April 10th, striking out a seasonhigh seven batters in a season-high 7.2 innings pitched.

FOEREVER A LEATHERNECK

Western Illinois University and the Leatherneck baseball program was dealt a tragic blow when head baseball coach Stan Hyman passed away on Sept. 5, 2009 after a three month battle with leukemia. Hyman served as the head coach of the Leathernecks for eight seasons. Under his guidance, the Western Illinois baseball program soared to new heights. During Hyman’s tenure at Western the Leathernnecks defeated nationallyranked opponents such as Long Beach State, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Texas Tech, Iowa, Kansas State, Michigan State, Illinois-Chicago, and Oral Roberts

VanBrooker’s 54.2 innings pitched was tied for eighth among the Summit League leaders. He struck out five or more batters on five occasions. “Devin was an outstanding young man. He may have only been with us a short while, but Devin made an immediate impact on our baseball team. He was going to be a key player as Coach Mike Villano works to rebuild our baseball program,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim

2011 Preview

SEASON PREVIEW

The Fighting Leathernecks will look to continue to grow under second year head coach Mike Villano. The squad looks to improve on a 14-39 record that they collected a season ago. With a strong mixture of returning leadership and exciting newcomers, Western Illinois has reason to be optimistic for the Spring.

The Schedule The Fighting Leathernecks will face four opponents who participated in the 2010 NCAA Baseball Regionals. They include Kansas State, which finished third in the Big XII a season ago, Atlantic 10 Champion Saint Louis University, Summit League opponent Oral Roberts and Illinois State University. The 2011 campaign begins with a three-game series with Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. (Feb. 18-21). From there the Leathernecks travel to Decatur, Ga. for a four-game tilt with Georgia State University (Feb. 25-27) before traveling to Manhattan, Kan. to face Big XII member Kansas State University (March 4-6). Western will spend spring break in Terre Haute, Ind. where they will the Sycamores of Indiana State (March 11-13). The Leathernecks will face the Broncos of Western Michigan in between those two games in Terre Haute. Coach Villanoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squad will stay on the road as they will play Saint Louis (March 15) and Northern Illinois (March 16) in St. Louis. Western will stay instate to play three games against Missouri State University (March 17-19). The team will then open up a three-game series with the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa (March 25-27). The first two games of that series will be played in Iowa City before the Hawkeyes come to Macomb for the third game of the series, which will mark the home-opener for Western. The Leathernecks will be back on the road to travel to Peoria, Ill. to face the Braves of Bradley University in a three-game tilt (April 1-3). The Leathernecks will renew the rivalry in Charleston, Ill. to play one game against Eastern Illinois University before starting Summit League play. The Panthers won the last meeting in 2004, 5-4.

Jordan

Western Illinois will get a lot of home cooking as it begins a nine-game homestand. League play starts at home for Western as it hosts defending regular season champion South Dakota State University for four games (April 8-10).

Koszulinksi The Braves and Leathernecks will revisit their series as Bradley University visits for one game (April 13). The homestand continues as Summit League Tournament Champion Oral Roberts comes to town for a four game series (April 1517). Western will then travel to Davenport to face the Hawkeyes at Modern Woodmen Park for a fourth and final time (April 20). The Leathernecks continue their way through April as they travel to Rochester, Mich. for a four-game series with Oakland University. Western will then fly out to Cedar City, Utah, to face the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah (April 28-30). The Leathernecks open May on the road with a four-game tilt at IPFW (May 6-7). Western returns home after the 12-game road trip to play host Centenary College for four games (May 13-15). Missouri Valley Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Illinois State will stop in Macomb for one game (May 17) and that will signal the close of the home schedule for the Leathernecks. Western concludes the 2011 regular season campaign with a trip to Fargo, N.D. to face North Dakota State University in a four-game series (May 19-21). The top four teams during the regular season will play for the conference championship in Sioux Falls, S.D on May 26-28

Returners The 2011 edition of the Western Illinois baseball program returns nine letterwinners, including eight seniors. Five pitchers will also return to the mound for the Leathernecks in 2011 including Beau Below and two-sport athlete Chris Fuchs. The offensive production will be placed on the shoulders of returning starters Bryan Jordan and John Koszulinski. Jordan hit .308 with a team-high nine home runs and 35 RBI. The Cincinnati native

also drew a team-high 28 walks. Koszulinski led the team in RBI with 49 and finished with a .354 batting average. Rich Mascheri came on strong late in the season to hit .385, which was second on the team.

The pitching staff will be the area that Western will look to improve upon most from last season. Chris Macek leads returning pitchers with 16 appearances last season. Macek also picked up two wins in seven starts. Beau Below is the top returning starter and will look to improve his 6.54 ERA. Travis Pedersen appeared in 15 games a season ago.

Newcomers There will be 22 new Leatherneck baseball players on the roster this year for Coach Villano’s squad. Several have been earning rave reviews from Villano and his staff. Half of those are hurlers and there is reason for optimism with the incoming arms. Ryan Wachholder has impressed early on after coming over from Heartland C.C. where he finished with a 6-1 record in 51 innings. Dustin Hunter has also drawn attention from the coaches. The 6-3 right-handed pitcher from Senath, Mo. spent the last two seasons at Mineral Area C.C. Hunter recorded a 5-1 mark during his freshman season and a 5-3 record during his sophomore season. Alexander Zarate looks to contribute after joining Western Illinois from Heartland C.C. Zarate he threw 53.1 innings and struck out 35 batters.

Giglio

Kaskadden The outfield will get a boost from Matt Igara and Ryan Cowhey. Igara hails from Algonquin, Ill. and is another product of Heartland. He started all 55 games during his sophomore season and hit .410 with 80 hits. Igara collected 22 doubles, five triples and 13 home runs while finishing 8th in the country with 83 RBI’s and a slugging percentage of .774 and collected 151 total bases. Ryan Cowhey transfers to Western after two seasons with Oakton C.C. in Des Plaines, Ill. Cowhey led the team in average and slugging percentage and hit .418 as a sophomore. He also led the team in hits with 74, doubles (21), home runs (8) and runs scored with 75. Danny Marcuzzo and Austin Cowen look to add their services to what is already becoming an improved infield. Marcuzzo, from Omaha, Neb. will wear the Purple & Gold after playing at Coffeyville C.C. Last season he was named All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Tom Lilja will also look to contribute offensively after hitting .319 and driving in 32 runs. Dan Dispensa will focus all of his energy on baseball after also playing football in 2009-10. Dispensa knocked in 22 runs with a .299 average but missed the end of the season due to injury. Chris Giglio and Anthony Kaskadden will be the Leatherneck’s main source of speed. The two combined for 20 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

Cowen is from Gillette, Wyo. and played at Miles C.C. before coming to Macomb. A season ago he was named Mon-Dak Conference MVP and an AllRegion player. Western Illinois also helped the depth behind the plate with additions of Jake Moore and Koshaun Mosley. Moore was a two-time All-Conference and was named to the All-County All-Star team. The Leathernecks plucked the Rochester, Mich. native from Oakland’s backyard. He was also named team MVP and team captain. Last season he hit .422 with 27 RBI with six home runs and swiped eight bags. Mosley joins the roster out of Kankakee, Ill. He also looks to play some outfield in his time at Western. Mosley was an All-Conference selection and an All-Area Second Team selection. As a team captain, he broke the school record for RBI. He also hit .440 with nine home runs and stole 25 bases.

SENIOR (2010) FOOTBALL: Averaged 30.7 yards on three punts during the second half of the win over Valparaiso... six punts for 39.2 yards at Purdue, including a season-long 46 yards... matched a career-high of seven punts against Sam Houston State, averaging 41.6 yards per kick... launched five inside the 20-yard line and recorded a season-long 49 yard kick... averaged 37.2 yards on six punts in the win over Indiana State, including a season-long 52-yarder... placed three of his six punts inside the Sycamore 5-yard line... punted six times at North Dakota State, including three inside the 20-yard line... averaged 39.3 yards on three punts, including a long of 50 yards, at South Dakota State... averaged 42.2 yards on six punts against Youngstown State with a long of 50 yards and put one inside the 20-yard line... averaged 43.2 yards on five punts at Missouri State... he launched a 51-yard punt that game and put two inside the 20-yard line... surpassed 8,000 career punt yards, only the fourth Leatherneck to reach that milestone. 2009-10 (JUNIOR): BASEBALL: Posted two consecutive scoreless outings (3/31 vs. Coe College and 4/5 vs. Culver Stockton)... picked up his fifth career save against Culver Stockton by tossing two perfect innings... moved him to second place in school history in saves... struck out a season-high three batters at Iowa (4/20). 2008-09 (SOPHOMORE): BASEBALL: Led team with 24 appearances on the year while starting in four games... finished third on the teams with 31 strikeouts... collected three saves, tying him for seventh all-time on the single season school rankings... picked up a season-high four strikeouts at Southern Utah (April 18).

2007-08 (FRESHMAN): BASEBALL: Appeared in 15 games on the hill as a true freshman... pitched 1.2 inning of scoreless relief at Long Beach State (March 17) earned his first career save against IPFW (April 13), striking out a season high three batters in 1.2 innings of work... collected 14 strikeouts in 17.1 innings... was only freshman pitcher to earn a letter.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE

As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues. Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing field and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees. During the 2010 season, Jason Summers was named second team All-Summit. Summers led the the Summit League in batting at .423 and finished with a .459 batting average in league play. He also finished 8th on Western’s single season top-ten all-time batting list. Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes.

The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE

Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions.

The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports.

Women’s Athletics at Western Illinois • In July 1977 a county-wide nickname contest was held to establish an identity for Western’s female student-athletes. From more than 100 entries, women athletes and coaches voted for the nickname “Westerwinds,” helping fuel an increasingly popular national climate of women’s intercollegiate athletics. • Western Illinois has won three of the past four Summit League RegularSeason softball titles and won the league tournament and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. • The Leathernecks have posted a 72-25 record in Summit League play under head coach Holly Van Vlymen including a 40-4 record against league opponents the past two seasons. • After the turn of the century, with the number of sports offered for men and women being equal, attention turned to creating a gender neutral athletics environment. Significant improvements have been made in recent years to marketing and publicity efforts, salaries, facilities and other resources. In 2009, the men and women began using a unified nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks.”

The Leathernecks & Rock Hanson • Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. • The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname. • Hanson coached Leatherneck football for 16 years (1926-41) and was Western’s all-time winningest coach until 1998. In 1950, Western’s football stadium, Hanson Field, was dedicated in his honor. Rock retired in 1964 after serving at Western Illinois for 38 years. He passed away in 1982, at the age of 86.
