What is your leadership style and coaching philosophy?

Q&A WITH COACH MOLINARI

My leadership style is basically that you attach your goals to your values. I believe in making such things as effort, discipline, unity and humility as goals for each of our young men. I also want our players to grow in four ways: athletically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. I help them do that by providing them with structure and by building strong relationships with each athlete. A leader once said that in this day and age, “rules without relationships lead to rebellion.” Therefore, all of my discipline and teaching must flow out of an open and honest relationship with each individual. My coaching philosophy is based on defense, sharing the basketball, and individual workouts outside of our team workouts - the greater the sacrifice the greater the victories. So we teach our young men to appreciate the struggle in trying to become a championship-level player and team.

With 30 years of Division I coaching experience, how are you different today from when you first started coaching? Basically my philosophy has stayed the same. I firmly believe that you do not have a philosophy unless you stick with it in both good and bad times. I do believe, though, that like most other coaches, the importance of recruiting has become paramount. Players, not plays, are what allow you to be successful. With an ever changing family structure in our society, I believe you don’t just coach them anymore, you have an additional responsibility of helping to raise the young men.

What types of goals have the coaching staff and team set for this season? As I mentioned earlier, we want to grow in the core values on and off the court. We want to do everything with great effort. We want to surrender our individual goals for the team/group goal. We want to show great discipline in both little and big things. We want to view all things and relationships with humble eyes so we are focused not on our rights but our responsibilities. We want to be thankful for the opportunity to coach and play at such a great university and we will show that appreciation by practicing those values on and off the court. We’re starting to have more players in the program now that understand our philosophy and expectations, so we want to have more success on the court in the next two years with this group of players.

What made you want to be a part of the Western Illinois program? Having been a head coach at two other Illinois schools, Northern Illinois and Bradley, and having spent all but four years of my college coaching career in Illinois, made me think it was a very good fit. Many of my decisions, whether they be professional or personal, are based on something that not only is right, but feels right. Also, having been a part of two rebuilding situations, like Northern Illinois and Bradley, I enjoy the great challenge of trying to make a program better in every area. After being here for two years, my staff and I are even more driven to take Western to places it has not been for a long time.

Who is the ideal Western Illinois basketball player? Someone who cares about his character, wants a degree, and wants to be a part of a team that will sacrifice and care for each other in pursuit of victories on and off the court. College basketball is a game of urgency so he must have a passion and a desire to grow in all areas as a student-athlete. Finally, he must be teachable on the court and in the classroom. Many people leave college with a degree these days, but few leave with an attitude based on effort, discipline and the ability to overcome obstacles. We want them to have the confidence when they leave here to be comfortable in any environment because of that type of attitude.

What is needed to take this program to the next level?

6

We have to totally change the culture at Western. We can only do that by improving our recruiting, our overall character, our academic performance, and establishing a great unity on and off the court. We also have to continue to improve our facilities because young people are very visual in the recruiting process. We also need to greatly improve our attendance at home by attracting more students and people from the community. To be successful in college basketball, you have to make the home environment one that leads to consistent victory. If we do all these things, we will continue to improve on our win total which went from 9 to 13 from our first year to our second year.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Al Goldfarb President

Since Al Goldfarb, Western Illinois University’s 10th president, officially took office July 1, 2002, the University has outlined goals and values within the framework of a strategic plan, expanded the University’s operations in the Quad Cities through a gift from Deere and Company of facilities and land which will become a riverfront campus, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2012, and designated the southwest section of the Macomb campus as a fine arts quadrant and location for a new Performing Arts Center. Under his leadership the University has expanded its Cost Guarantee program to include graduate degree students, making Western the only public university in the state which guarantees tuition, fees, and room and board at the undergraduate and graduate level. Goldfarb oversees the University’s current comprehensive campaign, “Set the Standard: Higher Values in Higher Education,” which to date, has raised just over $30 million of the campaign’s $60 million goal. University fundraising efforts resulted in $8.2 million in Fiscal Year 2009, the highest annual total on record.

Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine

Assistant V.P./Director of Athletics

In nine years at Western Illinois, Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine has instilled a commitment to developing a broad based gender-neutral, yet competitive NCAA Division I athletics program. Western has won 23 conference championships under Van Alstine, winning three MidContinent Conference Commissioner’s Cups, 2003, 2004, 2005 and finishing second the following three years. Twenty Western Illinois teams have advanced to NCAA postseason competition and 58 student-athletes have competed as individuals representing Western at the NCAA’s. Further, since 2001, Western coaches have earned 26 “Coach of the Year” accolades. Van Alstine has increased the academic expectations as well. For the first time in program history, Western Illinois student athletes exceeded the 3.0 grade point average in consecutive semesters (spring 2009 and fall 2009) with a then-all-time high 3.15 GPA after the 2009 fall semester. In spring 2010 athletics had its third-straight semester with at least a 3.0 GPA as the student-athletes achieved an unprecedented 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes have had a steady 76 percent graduation success rate (1999-2002 cohort). Van Alstine is currently The Summit League representative on the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet. He is a member of NACDA’s FCS Athletic Director’s Association Executive Committee and served as President during the 2008-09 academic year. For the past five years he served as the Missouri Valley Football Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee and the NCAA FCS Football Committee. Van Alstine has served as chair of The Summit League Joint Council, chair of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Athletic Directors Council, and chair of The Summit League Men’s Basketball Coaches Committee. He is currently chair of The Summit League Competition Committee and a member of the Membership Committee.

The competitive nature and success of most athletics programs is measured and evaluated on a daily basis, primarily on the scoreboards, newscasts, and newspapers. Often times the basis of a sport program’s competitiveness and ultimate success extends behind the headlines deep into the support offered by its administration.

WOMEN’S HISTORY IN ATHLETICS 34

Women’s Athletics at Western Illinois • In July 1977 a county-wide nickname contest was held to establish an identity for Western’s female student-athletes. From more than 100 entries, women athletes and coaches voted for the nickname “Westerwinds,” helping fuel an increasingly popular national climate of women’s intercollegiate athletics. • Western Illinois began competing in women’s soccer in 1997 and joined the Mid-Continent Conference (now The Summit League) in women’s soccer in 1999. • After the turn of the century, with the number of sports offered for men and women being equal, attention turned to creating a gender neutral athletics environment. Significant improvements have been made in recent years to marketing and publicity efforts, salaries, facilities and other resources. In 2009, the men and women began using a unified nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks.”

The Leathernecks & Rock Hanson • Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. • The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname. • Hanson coached Leatherneck football for 16 years (1926-41) and was Western’s all-time winningest coach until 1998. In 1950, Western’s football stadium, Hanson Field, was dedicated in his honor. Rock retired in 1964 after serving at Western Illinois for 38 years. He passed away in 1982, at the age of 86.
