Seeking his fifth Summit League tournament title at Western Illinois, head coach Eric Johnson believes his squad has the talent and experience to compete for the conference crown in 2010. “We have a deep roster and that will help us this season,” said Johnson. “We have some hurdles to overcome to return to the postseason, but the recruiting class we have coming in and the returners from last year are all capable of stepping into important roles. We are starting to find that right mix of skill, communication and grit in order to be creative and successful.”
THE RETURNERS The Leathernecks return seven starters and eight seniors from the 2009 squad, which saw four players earn All-League honors. Offensively, Western returns four of its top six scorers from 2009, including sophomores Nathan Bruinsma, Oskar Gasecki, and Husref Jupic. Bruinsma returns as the Leathernecks’ leading scorer, collecting 10 points on three goals and a teamhigh four assists in 2009. Meanwhile, Gasecki was named to the Summit League’s All-Newcomer team after tallying seven points, and scoring the game-winning goal in the conference title match. Jupic led the squad with 18 shots on goal.
2010 preview
The 2010 Fighting Leathernecks will look to make a second straight NCAA College Cup appearance after last years Summit League Tournament title over UMKC. Western Illinois returns eight seniors, seven starters and a trio of sophomores looking to build off of productive freshmen campaigns in 2010.
Bruinsma, Kooten Johnson and James Raabe all return to anchor a defense that helped former Leatherneck goalkeeper Stephen Paterson break the program record for career shutouts (23). The Leatherneck defense picked up six shutouts in 2009, including two straight in the Summit League Tournament. Other returning starters include midfielders Cosimo Patano, Jonathan Sandoval and Adam Rappin. Junior Andy Ryan steps in for Paterson in goal and looks repeat his predecessor’s success in his first season as starter. Ryan has made eight career appearances, including five starts over his first two seasons at Western. The Rolling Meadows, Ill. native has posted a 4-1-0 record, two shutouts, and a 0.75 GAA in nearly 600 minutes in net.
THE NEWCOMERS Coach Johnson’s roster will feature six new scholarship players in 2010, including three high school seniors and three junior college transfers from Garden City Community College. Juniors Alexis Dominguez, Leo Mariano and Adrian Loyacono helped lead Garden City to a Top 15 ranking in the final National Junior College poll during the 2009 season. All three players also attended Coral Gables High School and won a district championship in 2007. Western’s incoming freshmen include: Charlie Bales, a First Team All-State defender and statechampion from Iowa; Cole Giessel, an All-Conference goalkeeper from Illinois; and Drew Edmond, an All-State selection in Nebraska during his junior and senior seasons. Johnson’s roster will also feature six walk-ons looking to contribute immediately. Junior midfielder Daniel Lewis joins the Leathernecks after transferring from Western Michigan. Lewis, an Arlington Heights, Ill. native, recorded six points on two goals and two assists over the last two seasons with the Broncos. Midfielders Ryan Hardin, Anes Kadiric, Jose Riera and forward Eugene Tsipris join defender Tyrel Spittler to make up the freshman walk-on class.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE
As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues. Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing field and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic AllAmericans and 33 Academic All-District honorees. During the 2009 campaign, Western Illinois returned to the league title match for the first time since 2006 and won its fourth championship in the past six seasons. After shutting out IUPUI in first round tournament action, the Leathernecks got a 78th-minute goal from freshman Oscar Gasecki to defeat UMKC, 1-0, in the title match. Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic

In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011.

and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions.
These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. 2009 in review
A year after being eliminated by UMKC in the first round of The 2008 Summit League Tournament, the Western Illinois men’s soccer team returned to the league title match, winning its fourth championship in the past six seasons in 2009. The Fighting Leathernecks (8-10-2, 3-2-1 Summit League) began the season with a 4-0 loss to Graceland at home on Sept. 1 before heading to Milwaukee for the Middleton Sports and Invitational the following weekend. Western opened the Invitational with a 1-0 loss UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 4, and followed with another 1-0 defeat to Wisconsin two days later. The Leathernecks traveled to Ohio the next weekend for the adidas/Bearcats Invitational where the team lost its first match, 3-0, to tournament host Cincinnati. The team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over High Point to cap off the tournament. After a two-week break, Western returned home and picked up a 3-2 win over Central Arkansas on Sept. 27. A 4-2 loss at Evansville two days later put the Leathernecks’ record to 2-5 at the end of September. The squad got off to another rocky start in October, dropping matches to conference foe UMKC and then-No. 22 Drake to open the second month of the season. The Leathernecks would begin a late-season turnaround on Oct. 10, picking up a 1-0 home victory over IUPUI. The team hit a bump in the road, allowing two second-half goals in a 3-2 loss at then-No. 16 Northwestern on Oct. 14 before rebounding with a 2-1 conference win over Centenary on Oct. 17. With just five regular-season matches remaining, the Leathernecks entered the tail end of the season with a 4-8 record overall and a 2-2 mark in league play. A scoreless tie in non-league action against UIC on Oct. 20 pushed the teams’ record to 4-8-1 overall.

Sanchez Western would fall to IPFW on Oct. 25, dropping to 4-9-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league play. The loss to IPFW would be the last of the season for the Leathernecks as the team rebounded for two wins in its final three matches. A 1-0 non-league win against SIU-Edwardsville on Oct. 28 improved Western’s record to 5-8-1 overall with two league matches remaining. The Leathernecks would clinch a spot in the postseason with a 4-1 win at Oral Roberts on Oct. 31 and would clinch the No. 2 seed in The Summit League Tournament in a scoreless tie against Oakland on Nov. 7 to finish the season with an overall record of 6-9-2 and 3-2-1 in league play. Western began the league tournament against IUPUI on Nov. 13. After a scoreless first half, the Leathernecks would take the lead on Arthur Paszkowski’s goal in the 71st minute and held on for a 1-0 win to advance to the tournament championship match. The Leathernecks would meet UMKC in the league’s championship match one year after being eliminated by the Kangaroos in the first round of the tournament. Western would take a 1-0 lead on Oskar Gasecki’s goal in the 78th minute and held off UMKC to win The Summit League Championship and earn a spot in the NCAA College Cup. Western would wind up in yet another rematch as it was paired against Drake in the first round of the College Cup. The Leathernecks traveled to Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 19 to face the then-No. 24 Bulldogs with the winner earning a trip to the second round and a match against then No. 13 Ohio State.
Despite a disappointing loss in the College Cup, Western Illinois’ 2009 season was successful on several fronts as the Leathernecks saw four players earn All-League honors. Senior goalkeeper Stephen Paterson was named to the All-Summit League Second Team and earned Summit League Tournament MVP honors after making 13 saves and recording two shutouts to lead Western to the league title. Paterson was also named as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week for the weeks of Oct. 12 and Nov. 9. The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native finished the season with a 6-9-2 record while posting a 1.32 goals against average and a .780 save percentage. He also recorded six shutouts on the season, placing him first in school history with 23 career clean sheets. Paterson was also named as the league’s male athlete of the month for November. Martin Browne, Jr. was also named as an allSummit League second team selection after leading the Leathernecks in goals (6) and total points (12). The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native was named as the league’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 2 and finished his time at Western with 64 career points, the ninth best mark in team history.
Gasecki
Bruinsma Diego Zamudio was named to the all-Summit League first team after recording one assist on the season and anchoring a defense that allowed just three goals in its final six matches, including four shutouts. Oskar Gasecki was named to the league’s allnewcomer team after tallying seven points on three goals and one assist during the regular season. The Gurnee, Ill., native scored the game-winning goal over UMKC in the league championship match and notched the gamewinner against Central Arkansas on Sept. 27.

Drake stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the match before Western closed the gap at 2-1 on Husref Jupic’s penalty kick in the 79th minute. The Bulldogs would hold of the Leathernecks in the closing minutes, ending Western’s season.
Jonathan Sandoval earned the league’s Offensive Co-Player of the Week award for the week of Oct. 12 after scoring the first gamewinning goal of his career in a 1-0 win over IUPUI on Oct. 10. Off the field, Kevin Ross was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict team, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA as a business major. The Leathernecks had two players tally doubledigits in points for the second-straight season. Browne, Jr. finished with a team high 12 points on six goals. Nathan Bruinsma finished second on the team with 10 points on three goals and a team-high four assists.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION
Dr. Al Goldfarb President
•
Since Al Goldfarb, Western Illinois University’s 10th president, officially took office July 1, 2002, the University has outlined goals and values within the framework of a strategic plan, expanded the University’s operations in the Quad Cities through a gift from Deere and Company of facilities and land which will become a riverfront campus, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2012, and designated the southwest section of the Macomb campus as a fine arts quadrant and location for a new Performing Arts Center.
•
Under his leadership the University has expanded its Cost Guarantee program to include graduate degree students, making Western the only public university in the state which guarantees tuition, fees, and room and board at the undergraduate and graduate level.
•
Goldfarb oversees the University’s current comprehensive campaign, “Set the Standard: Higher Values in Higher Education,” which to date, has raised just over $30 million of the campaign’s $60 million goal. University fundraising efforts resulted in $8.2 million in Fiscal Year 2009, the highest annual total on record.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION 26
Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine Director of Athletics
• In nine years at Western Illinois, Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine has instilled a commitment to developing a broad-based genderneutral, yet competitive NCAA Division I athletics program. •
Western has won 23 conference championships under Van Alstine, winning three Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner’s Cups, 2003, 2004, 2005 and finishing second the following three years.
•
Twenty Western Illinois teams have advanced to NCAA postseason competition and 58 student-athletes have competed as individuals representing Western at the NCAA’s. Further, since 2001, Western coaches have earned 26 “Coach of the Year” accolades.
•
Football attendance during the 2003 season reached a total of 77,426 - the highest attendance figure in school history - and an average of 12,904 fans per game - the second highest mark in the program’s 108 years. Each of the average football attendances during Van Alstine’s first three years rank among the top 15 marks.
•
Van Alstine has increased the academic expectations as well. For the first time in program history, Western Illinois student athletes exceeded the 3.0 grade point average in consecutive semesters (spring 2009 and fall 2009) with a then-alltime high 3.15 GPA after the 2009 fall semester. In spring 2010 athletics had its third-straight semester with at least a 3.0 GPA as the student-athletes achieved an unprecedented 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes have had a steady 76 percent graduation success rate (1999-2002 cohort).
The competitive nature and success of most athletics programs is measured and evaluated on a daily basis, primarily on the scoreboards, newscasts, and newspapers. Often times the basis of a sport program’s competitiveness and ultimate success extends behind the headlines deep into the support offered by its administration.

FACILITIES The national and regional yardstick by which a program’s support base is measured is in its facilities. The coaches and staff at Western Illinois are vigilant in monitoring the successes, failures, resources, and facilities of their peers and rival institutions. These comparisons are provident because in intercollegiate athletics, just as with other components of the University, most often there is a direct relationship between the facilities and resources and the competitive success of the program.

WOMEN’S HISTORY IN ATHLETICS 30
Women’s Athletics at Western Illinois • In July 1977 a county-wide nickname contest was held to establish an identity for Western’s female student-athletes. From more than 100 entries, women athletes and coaches voted for the nickname “Westerwinds,” helping fuel an increasingly popular national climate of women’s intercollegiate athletics. • Western Illinois began competing in women’s soccer in 1997 and joined the MidContinent Conference in women’s soccer in 1999. • After the turn of the century, with the number of sports offered for men and women being equal, attention turned to creating a gender neutral athletics environment. Significant improvements have been made in recent years to marketing and publicity efforts, salaries, facilities and other resources. The Leathernecks & Rock Hanson • Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. • The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname. • Hanson coached Leatherneck football for 16 years (1926-41) and was Western’s all-time winningest coach until 1998. In 1950, Western’s football stadium, Hanson Field, was dedicated in his honor. Rock retired in 1964 after serving at Western Illinois for 38 years. He passed away in 1982, at the age of 86.
