Penguin parade all at sea CUTE emperor penguins made of cuttlefish and black seashells diving off a jetty into the sea was an eye-catching example of the artworks on display at The Local Creative in High St, Hastings. Set in a recessed frame with sky blue backdrop, Shell Studies by Will Palmer, of Balnarring, was one of myriad attractions on display at Friday’s launch. About 120 guests turned the opening into what looked like a Boxing Day sale. The work by Mr Palmer, left with marketing and promotions manager Angie Baker, featured among paintings, carved figures, wall hangings, quality furniture, wood turnings and rope work. The launch heralded a weekend of solid sales, with Ms Baker saying around $1000 worth of stock attracted buyers on the busy opening weekend. Money from the sale of Mr Palmer’s work goes to an early learning primary school in Papua New Guinea.

O’Toole legacy set in stone Chris Brennan chris@mpnews.com.au ONE of Hastings’ busiest pedestrian thoroughfares will be named in honour of murdered jeweller Dermot O’Toole during a special ceremony commemorating this month’s anniversary of his death. The shire council has approved a proposal from Western Port Chamber of Commerce and Industry to name the walkway between High St and the
Coles car park “O’Toole Walk”. A decorative steel garden bench carrying a plaque dedicated to Mr O’Toole will be placed in the “meandering” laneway, while colourful shrubs will be planted in garden beds along the side of the path. The chamber is also organising a “dedication and remembrance ceremony” officiated by a Catholic priest in the laneway on 12 July – the day 12 months ago Mr O’Toole was murdered
during a botched armed robbery at his High St shop, the Jewell Shed. Mr O’Toole, 64, was a well-known and much loved Hastings personality renowned for his generosity. He was stabbed twice in the upper chest while trying to protect his wife, Bridget, during the attempted late-afternoon hold-up. Gavin Perry, 27, of Hastings, last week pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to charges of murder, armed rob-
bery and intentionally causing injury. He is yet to be sentenced. Councillors last week voted to support the walkway proposal, with official procedures to formalise the naming application now underway. Chamber treasurer Vic Rodwell said the memorial laneway and remembrance ceremony had been organised “in recognition of the courage and fortitude shown by the O’Toole family over the past year”.

Port surveys end in August Mud pack: Volunteers plant mangroves along the northern shores of Western Port where erosion and man-made drains are responsible for delivering 90,000 tonnes of silt into the bay.
Mudlark in the mangroves TRUDGING through the thick mud of the northern shores of Western Port may not be everybody’s idea of a day out, but it can be worthwhile for those who care for the environment. Members of the Western Port Seagrass Partnership (WPSP) spent a day planting mangroves off an eroded section of the bay’s shoreline at Lang Lang. Their efforts mean that 1000 young mangroves have been planted this year. Port of Hastings Development Authority CEO Mike Lean and some of his staff joined volunteer planters from Western Port Landcare Group, Swamp Landcare, Mornington Peninsula Youth Enterprises and Monash University. WPSP secretary Doug Newton
said planting mangroves was “very challenging, not only because of the difficulty in establishing mangroves in this hostile environment, but also because of the difficulty it poses to our volunteers. “Wading through this deep gooey mud is hard dirty work, only rewarded by a cold water wash down and abandonment of irretrievably filthy cloths and footwear, he said. Mr Newton hoped the young mangroves would become “a selfsustaining mangrove forest along this problematic coastline. “A forest to tame the aggressive shoreline erosion, protect disappearing salt marshes, and help seagrass recovery by reducing the smothering sticky sediments that are currently entering Western Port.
Mr Newton said CSIRO studies showed up to 30,000 tonnes of silt entered Western Port waters from this coastline which was eroding at the rate of 80 centimetres a year. A further 60,000 tonnes of silt poured into the bay along man-made drains to the north. Mr Newton said some earlier plantings had been pulled out by “misguided individuals who did not realise the important ecological role of mangroves “preserving and building up the foreshores by stopping the erosion, by providing a nursery for young fish. Without young fish there would be no recreational fishing and “no fish for the penguins to eat so consequently no tourism industry on Phillip Island.

SURVEYS to collect information about the physical characteristics of land and seabed around the proposed expanded Port of Hastings will end the end of August. The geotechnical and geophysical survey programs began in December and were carried out to give the Port of Hastings Development Authority a better understanding of the local coastal and marine environments. The authority’s CEO Mike Lean said the information obtained from the surveys will be used to “better inform the next phase of feasibility planning for the container expansion project and contribute to a comprehensive knowledge base that the authority is developing in the areas of interest within Western Port for the container expansion project. He said terrestrial samples were collected using a variety of methods including taking borehole samples, ground probes and digging test pits. The terrestrial investigation locations were selected on the advice of a qualified botanist to minimise disruption to native vegetation. Marine geotechnical surveys have involved taking samples and along with the marine geophysical surveys focussed on the northern part of the port area, the North Arm Channel, the Anchorage and Western Channel. Port of Hastings Development Authority’s CEO Mike Lean said that

these surveys were providing up to date information on the seabed conditions in Western Port’s existing shipping channels and port areas. This level of detail has not previously existed. Mr Lean said there were still a small number of marine sites to be completed, including three in the anchorage off Cowes, over the coming weeks, weather permitting. As part of ongoing safety requirements, recreational fishermen and boaters in the area are asked to keep 100 metres from the jack-up barge being used to carry out the geotechnical survey and to seek the harbourmaster’s directions at all times. The authority says the first stage of the expanded port will include a terminal capable of handling three million containers a year. Environmental and planning studies are exoected to begin soon following the mid-April appointment of six “consultant teams. The contracted companies inlcude AECOM + GHD Joint Venture; Haskoning Australia; URS Australia; KPMG; and Corrs Chambers Westgarth. Ports Minister David Hodgett said the “container expansion was a government priority. The Labor Opposition has said that if elected in November it will look at alternative sites within Port Phillip.

A model approach to surfing Keith Platt keith@baysidenews.com.au IF Georgia Fish’s day isn’t filled with cutbacks, re-entries, bottom turns and tubes, she might work on concocting a healthy recipe or helping disadvantaged children. For the uninitiated, the first part of describing Fish’s day might sound a bit bizarre, but there is no explanation needed for surfers. Cutbacks, re-entries, bottom turns and tubes are all point-scoring manoeuvres on a wave. Put the word “radical in front of each and it gains more points. The 21-year-old from Flinders is part of a growing band of women surfers competing on the world circuit. After last month’s contest at Los Cabos, Mexico, Fish is currently ranked 18th in the qualification series to join the World Championship Tour. On 4 August she leaves Australia for a month to compete in the series’ last three contests: Oceanside in Los Angeles, Hossegor, France and Pantin, Spain. High rankings could ensure Fish a place in next year’s WCT. “Having a quarter final finish at Manly and Peru this year was a great start and I am working hard to try and back that up in the last three events, Fish said. “I’d love to qualify for the world tour but am trying not to make it my only goal. “It's been an amazing journey with lots of ups and downs. It's a tough

sport for the girls given that there is not much prize money or sponsorship opportunities, Fish said on Monday from her training at Lennox head in northern New South Wales. “The difference between training in Lennox and home is that you have so much more motivation to surf and train in the warmer environment. “Although surfing both areas is important, as they have different challenges with the environment which help me to become a more experienced surfer. “My aims are to progress my surfing to the most dynamic, progressive and confident stage that I can. “I think having that real self-belief that you are good enough to compete
at this level has a huge impact on performance. Fish is under no illusion about the difficulty of climbing to the top of her field. “The depth of field in the women’s is amazing now and there are only a few spots that come up each year, she says. “I will be happy if I can continue to progress my surfing to reach my highest potential, while utilising the exposure I get to help giving back to others. As well as modelling for and helping promote her sponsors (Balin and Ozmosis) Fish is studying Integrative Nutrition online and runs a “clean eating page “consciouscreations where
she posts recipes and tips for healthy eating. She also promotes the Choclo Project run by a company that donates a set percentage of its sales to help disadvantaged children. “I manage the social media and modelling for Ethical Creations - I donate my time to that because it has been set up to help children's projects – but apart from that, while the season is on, my full focus is to surf as much as possible in as many differing conditions and to and stay fit and strong. In one of her posts Fish describes concocting fulfilling salad to replace ones that “realistically a rabbit would only be satisfied after eating. “For me, creating a salad for dinner
is one of my favourite meals and creations. I love how versatile it can be. In my world, salad can involve grains, meat, veggies, fruits, nuts, super foods, herbs, spices, cheeses and basically anything I feel like throwing in. “I thought I’d do a post on how simple it is to take your salad from being a rabbit’s dinner to a man’s meal. Away from the tour spotlight and pressure Fish lists her favourite breaks as Quarantine, near Portsea, and “a secret surf spot in East Timor. “I’m lucky that my surfing takes me to so many beautiful and amazing places in the world and, if I can surf these destinations while giving back to the community, I’ll be extremely satisfied.

Mountaineers ready for race Peninsula Fireplace entre IT may be all up hill and down dale but riders at the Red Hill Mountain Bike Club wouldn’t have it any other way. They are flat out preparing for the Victorian schools mountain bike championships at their Hill View track around Dromana Secondary College on Sunday 27 July. It’s the third time they have hosted the races which draw a big field, with 150 competitors last year – up from 100 two years earlier. Riders race laps of the 3km track with the distance depending on their age. Enthusiast Adrian Wale – a teacher at the school – said the Red Hill club had 200 members and a penchant for success in competition. Two of the clan – Liam Jeffrey and Ellie Wale, Adrian’s daughter – are national champions: Liam in the under-17s and Ellie in the under-19s cross country even though she only turned 17 last Friday.
“Ellie started riding at eight. She loved the challenge of being able to ride with the boys – and she likes to go fast,” he said. “She won the Victorian Downhill Series for women in March and in April raced in the World Cup at Cairns coming second in the juniors and 20th in a field of 28 women. “It was a scary track but she loved it,” he said. The racing competition will do Ellie the world of good when she competes in the world mountain bike championships at Hafjell, Norway, in September. To help pay her way, the Red Hill Riders will hold a fundraiser in August. The next step in the mountain bike series of races is west, to the You Yangs Kurrajong Park, on Sunday 17 August, and then east to Lysterfield on 31 August. The state finals will be held at Bendigo on Saturday 11 October. Stephen Taylor

Let’s celebrate: Balnarring Pre-School educators Lisa Darling, Ann Slater, Kelly Chancellor, Michele Evans and Karen Anderson.
Pre-school goes to top of the class PRE-SCHOOLERS in Balnarring are getting the best start in life with their pre-school being named National Early Childhood Service of the Year. The kinder beat 327 entrants in the category with winners named at a 10th anniversary gala celebration in Sydney on Friday 20 June. Event organiser, Australian Family, describes the Early Education and Care Awards as a “celebration of outstanding contributions in children's services”. They aim to encourage staff working in all sectors of early childhood education and care to aspire to excellence. They praise services that set higher standards for themselves and which use innovation and excellence in planning and management to create a warm and inclusive community. Winners are said to exemplify outstanding achievement across their service with the award recognising the
achievements of the entire team. Balnarring Pre-school initially won the Victorian/Tasmania state award for service of the year in May qualifying it for the national awards in Sydney. There, educators Ann Slater and Michele Evans, and pre-school president Kelly Chancellor, presented to five judges. They described the livingand-learning-with-nature philosophy of Balnarring and how indigenous perspectives are embedded into the kinder program and what that means for children and their families. This refers to the pre-school’s work with a consultant – who works with other educators across the peninsula - to teach indigenous culture and develop in children a respect for different cultures. “The award recognises the hard work that’s gone into achieving innovative services and that what we are achieving is of interest to people
beyond the community, such as universities, government departments and educators Australia-wide,” pre-school director Karen Anderson said. “The educators have been courageous in developing innovative programs for children in both the three-year-old and four-year-old programs. While this year’s group of families celebrate the award, it really is the continuation of a journey that began 57 years ago.” Balnarring Pre-school has 90 pupils and is run by families, with parents on the committee. “We work strongly as a team and, when we spoke at the presentation, the judges could see we were all on the ‘same page’,” she said. Prizes included a $5000 professional development grant, sponsored by Catholic Super, which will be used to continue the innovative programs, and a $1000 voucher for resources. Stephen Taylor

Former shire president advises on ‘how to vote’ VOTERS participating in the August poll for a new Red Hill ward councillor are being urged to “look for character and ability and try to see through the inevitable running mate strategy of politicised groups”. The tips for choosing the right candidate come from David Gill, a one-time shire president of the former Shire of Mornington and member of the Balnarring Beach Community Association. Mr Gill, who has criticised state government planning policies on the Mornington Peninsula, told The News on Monday that “at this stage I won’t be a candidate”. At this stage, it will be a three-way contest for Red Hill ward between Joe Lenzo, Peter Holloway and Mark Fancett. The seat became vacant in May following the resignation of Frank Martin, who was first elected in 2008. Red Hill ward makes up about 45 per cent of the area of the shire by area. While not ruling out his candidacy, Mr Gill said “there is likely to be a higher than usual number of candidates because of a delicate balance between open minded and pro–officer sitting councillors”. “Let’s look at the record of candidates and not what they say. Look for character and ability and try to see through the inevitable ‘running mate’ strategy of politicised groups,” Mr Gill said. “The problem in choosing a new councillor is how do we differentiate between candidates? History shows that they say the same things, such as lower rates, care for the environment, we’ll listen to you. “Then comes the disappointment and nothing seems to happen much to the delight of council officers who are more or less left to pursue their own we know what is good for you agenda.”

Mr Gill accused the council of having “developed mechanisms to delay and obviate the will of the community while pursuing their own – meaning council officer – objectives”. Relatively small projects could take four years because “we are expected to believe that you allow 12 months for the budget process, 12 months for planning, 12 months for design and 12 months to build”. “Of course, many civic minded people are worn out by this never ending process and begin to believe that their local community may never achieve worthwhile aims and improvements,” Mr Gill said. “Talk to people from your local Community Association, they usually have a fair idea of the sort of person who will ‘have a go’ on your behalf.” Keith Platt

On track for accessing other areas A NEW access track being built at Point Leo will make it easier for wheelchairs to be taken in and out of the lifesaving club and onto the beach. The number of people in wheelchairs using the club increases dramatically whenever an event is held by the Mornington Peninsula branch of the Disabled Surfers Association. Work started on the new access track on Saturday, with members of the DSA and volunteers from local businesses which have donated materials and equipment. The DSA is confident the project will come in under budget, allowing a grant from Mornington Peninsula Shire to also be used to improve other points of access for the disabled on the foreshore. “The current access track should be completed by the end of July and at this stage we will see the completion of what we hope will be the first stage of complete beach access,” DSAMP committee member Joe Hart said. “The access track to Point Leo foreshore is part of the DSAMP in conjunction with the Point Leo Foreshore Committee and the Point Leo Surf Lifesaving plans to develop the area into a disability precinct.” Improvements will be made to the nearby toilet block, car park and provision made for all terrain wheelchairs. “This track ending near the lifesaving club entrance, even though not giving complete access to the beach, is just the first stage,” Mr Hart said. Companies donating towards the project include LBK Driveways and Design Construction and Asphalting; Maw Civil; Everist Timber; Barrell Concreting; Hillview Quarries; Holcim Australia; Fulton Hogan; GP Hire Rosebud, Point Leo Lifesaving Club; and Pt Leo Foreshore Committee.
Young engagement HASTINGS MP Neil Burgess is urging community and government groups in Hastings and Somerville to apply for grants of up to $150,000 to help young people build skills needed for life after school. “The program is another example of this government’s commitment to providing young people with more opportunities to become involved in their communities,” Mr Burgess said. Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith encourages organisations to reach out to young people and work with them to develop innovative projects that could be eligible for an Engage grant. The program will provide community organisations and local governments with the practical resources they need to listen, respond and create opportunities for young Victorians so that they can fulfil their potential, Mr Smith said. Applications close on Friday 1 August. For more information or to apply visit www.youthcentral.vic. gov.au

Extra space for cancer care CANCER patients across the peninsula now have more access to chemotherapy services with the opening of the first stage of the Peninsula Cancer Centre. “This enhancement of the oncology day unit is the start of something big,” Peninsula Health chair Nancy Hogan said at the opening. “The service plan is part of a five-year vision from our director of cancer services, Dr Romayne Holmes. “We are currently developing a cancer centre service plan for the peninsula. This will identify the services that are needed for today and for the future, as well as where they are needed and when they are needed.” The hospital’s chief operating officer, Brendon Gardner, said the refurbishment would allow more patients to be treated. “The unit now has five more treatment chairs, bringing the number to 15,” he said. “There are also two procedure beds, each with their own dedicated, patient-friendly procedural rooms. As well as larger treatment capacities, the expansion has added a new patient resource room to provide dedicated spaces for patient education and information sessions, while maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients and their relatives.” Peninsula Health cancer service provides 8000 chemotherapy treatments a year through the Oncology Day Treatment Centre and receives a further 4000 visits to its two outpatient clinics at the Frankston and Rosebud hospitals. Peninsula Health also provides genetic cancer screening services, inpatient services, surgical oncology and palliative care. The $3 million stage was opened on Monday by Dunkley MP Bruce Billson. The federal government contributed $650,000 towards the expansion of the day treatment centre in the Integrated Health Centre on Hastings Rd.

‘Pop-up’ opening a creative success Stephen Taylor steve@baysidenews.com.au WESTERN Port artists received valuable exposure at the launch of The Local Creative ‘pop-up shop’ art precinct in High St on Friday evening. About 120 guests were welcomed by Western Port Chamber of Commerce president David Nelli as well as politicians Greg Hunt and Neil Burgess. A range of artworks including paintings, carved figures, wall hangings, quality furniture, wood turnings and rope work lined the walls and floors and intrigued guests. Marketing and promotions manager Angie Baker said the opening was a “great success”. “We did a lot of sales – around $1000 worth – which is pretty good for a local creative. We were busy all weekend – particularly Sunday.” The arts precinct is in a group of shops, previously vacant, that have been leased on a monthly basis to sell locally-made arts and furniture. Their presence improves the main street’s appearance and brings life to formerly deserted areas of the town. This came about when Western Port Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mornington Peninsula Shire joined forces for a ‘Hello Hastings’ renewal project to rejuvenate the business hub around High St. The federal government pitched in $38,000 through the Department of Employment to get the project up and running, enabling Ms Baker to set up the shop. If the project is deemed successful there is scope to develop the initiative further. Artworks are sourced locally, such as at the Bono market and Hastings’ Thursday street market, with eye catching wood turnings by Ms Baker’s boyfriend’s father, Andrew Harris. “At the end of the day the aim is to have the shops run as an artists’ cooperative until they are leased, giving the artists experience and having the chamber help them develop business plans.

Opening time: It looked like a crowd watching an auction or shoppers waiting for the doors to open at a sale, but the crowd was in High St, Hastings, for Friday’s opening of a ‘pop up’ in the art “precinct”. Picture: Gary Sissons
“If they can be set up to sustain themselves that would be good.” Ms Baker says the success of the pop-up project can be gauged by the fact that, three weeks ago, five shops in High St were vacant: now, one is leased to a high end clothing retailer/gallery, one is the gallery and three others further up High St are also leased. Colourful signs in the main street hail the project with the slogan: ‘Empty Space, New Place!’ Chamber project manager Pam Ford said the focus was on using “empty space” to allow businesses to sign short term leases for vacant shops. She said landlords could see the value in filling the shops with businesses for the good of the town. Now there are six “micro businesses” along High
St and surrounds, most with an arts-based focus. The Hastings Renew idea is based on the Renew Newcastle not-for-profit initiative founded by urban renewal expert Marcus Westbury in 2008. He visited Hastings in July 2012 to discuss the concept with Western Port business people. Other towns and cities around Australia have followed his lead to offer short-term use of empty shops and offices to artists and others to turn derelict buildings into vibrant shopping areas. It had taken just 12 weeks to put the Hello Hastings campaign in place, according to Ms Ford. “It’s a first for the peninsula and it’s great to have the support of the shop landlords.” Details: www.hellohastings.com.au
Thieves target farms RURAL properties across the Western Port region are increasingly being targeted by thieves. Hastings police have warned residents and property owners in outlying areas to be especially vigilant following a recent spate of thefts. Motorbikes and firearms are among the most popular items being targeted, with four trail bikes stolen from a Somerville property last weekend. Detective Leading Senior Constable Nick Sweetman of Hastings crime investigation unit said thieves appeared to be turning their attention to rural properties due to lax security. He warned residents to make sure they lock up houses, sheds and vehicles properly. “These are crime of opportunity. If you lock up, chances are you won’t be robbed,” he said. FOUR hot water systems valued at about $1000 each were stolen during a burglary at a plumbing supply shop last weekend. The break-in is the second burglary at Plumbtec in Frankston-Flinders Rd in the past month. Anyone with information is asked to call Hastings crime investigation unit on 5970 7800 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Top cop praises brave Rosie POLICE Commissioner Ken Lay has nominated Rosie Batty for a bravery award, describing the mother of murder victim Luke Batty the most “remarkable’’ victim of crime he had ever met. The state’s top cop nominated Ms Batty for a Pride of Australia Courage medal, describing her as a “remarkable woman”. “I have dealt with a lot of victims in my policing career but I’ve never quite met one who is so focused on turning her tragedy into a positive,’’ Mr Lay said, revealing he had met privately with Ms Batty on a number of occasion in the days and months after the tragedy. “Since Luke’s death she has relentlessly worked hard to make sure that Victoria Police, agencies and the community better understand family violence, and to try and make sure a similar tragedy doesn’t befall others.’’
Planning for the easy path at Somerville GETTING older often makes it more difficult to move around town, but it needn’t. The remedy is good planning. “OH, to be school principal for a day! Just think of all the things you could do… Serve free ice cream at recess (maybe have two recesses); take a longer lunch time, go home early… the list is endless.” Well, what sounded like a dream actually came true for four lucky Tyabb Primary School pupils last week. So many applied for the plum positions that principal Nicole Bottriell and her assistant Carole Howden decided to share the joy around by appointing two principals and two viceprincipals. Those chosen for the top job were Tara and Alexei (both in year 5) and their assistants Georgia (year 3) and Callum (year 4). “We thought it would be fun to have a special day where two pupils could take on the role for the day,” Ms Bottriell said. “We talked about it at assembly and were overwhelmed by the number who wrote saying why they would like to do it and what they would do.” The many creative suggestions included buying fish and chips for the staff for lunch, longer
play times, putting a hot tub and coffee machine in the principal’s office, new playgrounds, theme days such as free dress, pet day, chocolate day and pinata day, class parties and selling McDonalds and ice-cream at the canteen. “Lots wrote about how much they cared for our school and how they liked to care for and help others,” Ms Bottriell said. “We were so impressed but, with so many great ideas, it was a really hard decision and we couldn’t choose just two people so we chose four.” It was a busy day at the office. The pupils met with the principal and her assistant, met junior school council representatives to discuss fundraisers and improvements, held a staff review, made announcements, delivered reports, did yard duty, a buildings and grounds inspection and set up the school disco. But the highlights made up for all the hard work. The lucky foursome was able to go out for lunch, give fellow students extra playtime and buy potato cakes and chips for the staffs’ lunch. Oh, if every day could be that good… Stephen Taylor

“Further, the Western Port Chamber of Commerce will be encouraging Green Days on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 July when all traders will be asked to display something green in their shop windows and to also wear something green in memory of Dermot. “The Hastings community is invited to join in this initiative to show that our town really looks after their own [and that] Dermot will not be forgotten.” Cr Garnock said the walkway was a fitting tribute to “such a wonderful, community-minded man, who would give you the shirt off his back”. “We know this is something that the family and community really want,” he said. “There was such a strong outpouring of public grief and sadness when Dermot died and one of the first things that was identified by the community, and especially his fellow traders, was the need for a lasting tribute to his memory.” The chamber had proposed the laneway, which is currently un-named, be called “O’Toole Way” in honour of Mr O’Toole’s spirit of generosity. “In addition to giving generously to community and fund-raising events, it is widely known Dermot was particularly generous in ensuring that less well-off customers would invariably walk out of his ship with a piece of jewellery that would more than satisfy their needs for their special occasion,” the chamber’s submission to council states. “His generosity towards the needy in this community is known locally as ‘the O’Toole Way’.” However, a report presented on the council’s 23 June meeting states that under the Geographic Place Names Act (1998), which outlines official procedures for selecting, assigning or amending place names, the pedestrian walkway could not be named a “way”.
“Although the submitter requested it be called O’Toole Way, ‘way’ is only to be used for vehicular roads as the definition from the OGN Guidelines is ‘an access way between two streets,” the report states. There are a number of other bureaucratic procedures that must be followed before the laneway can be officially named and the process will not be completed ahead of next Saturday’s anniversary. However, these are expected to be mere formalities and installation works will be completed in time for the anniversary ceremony regardless. The mayor, Cr Antonella Celi, said that while the naming of the walkway in honour of Mr O’Toole was a fitting tribute to his memory and had the full support of the shire council, the legal process outlined in the Guidelines for Geographic Names had to be followed. This includes public notification and a 30 day consultation period during which objections can be lodged. The proposal must then be submitted to Office of Geographic Names for approval. “With these steps in mind, and if there are no objections, the naming proposal could be approved by the Office of Geographic Names (subject to review for compliance with the guidelines) and gazetted some time during August,” she said. Mr Rodwell said the chamber appreciated that the shire council had to follow “a strict consultation process which probably cannot be concluded before the anniversary of Mr O’Toole’s death”. In the interim, permission had been sought and granted authorising the chamber to carry out the installation works in the walkway in time for the dedication ceremony, he said. The dedication ceremony will be held on Saturday 12 July from 9.45am in pedestrian walkway at 50-52 High St, between the National Bank and Hastings Dry Cleaners.
Chaos reigns as wild winds wreak havoc Chris Brennan chris@mpnews.com.au THE Mornington Peninsula bore the brunt of last week’s fierce wind storm which damaged homes, cut power supplies and created havoc for commuters as train services were suspended and major roads closed to traffic. Dozens of trees and power lines were brought down by wind gusts of up to 122km/h as an icy storm front labelled by the Bureau of Meteorology as a “winter weather bomb” blasted the state’s south-east on Tuesday. Emergency services were stretched to the limit clearing roads, rail lines and homes from fallen trees, branches and other debris, while police were kept busy responding to chaos on the roads. More than 100 homes were left without power in Hastings while large sections Mornington and Mt Martha were also hit. In all, more than 10,000 peninsula properties experienced power outages. State Emergency Services officials said the Mornington Peninsula was the state’s worst affected region, with more than 600 calls for help. To coordinate response efforts, a divisional command centre was set up at Frankston. Frankston SES controller Phil Holt said additional crews from around the state had been directed to the area to help clear up the backlog of jobs. “We had about 300 calls for assistance in the Frankston area and there was a similar number across the peninsula,” Mr Holt said. “The damage was fairly evenly dispersed across the region, mainly fallen trees and power lines.” He said the high volume of work meant SES crews had to prioritise tasks, with the number one priority clearing trees blocking roads. Coastal regions were especially hard hit, with huge swells combining with a high tide and driving wind and rain to the foreshore region. The Nepean Highway was awash at the bottom of Oliver’s Hill as waves crashed over the retaining wall and flooded the car park area and roadway, while Frankston pier was also extensively damaged. “I’ve lived in Frankston all my life and I’ve never seen the water that high before,” Mr Holt said. United Energy spokesman Damien Batey said the peninsula region had “felt the brunt of the extreme weather”, with about 10,500 properties left without power, while a further 800 homes in Frankston also affected. Sustained power interruptions were experienced in Frankston South, Hastings, Balnarring, Bittern and Sorrento, he said. “A substantial number of the interruptions across the region were single premise, customer outages,” Mr Batey said. “The worst damage done by the storm occurred between 10 and 11.30am on Tuesday when extreme winds lashed the region.

“We also had some customers experience outages of longer than 20 hours on the peninsula. We apologise for the inconvenience and as an act of good we are accelerating the compensation payments they would typically only receive on an annual basis. “Our crews worked tirelessly and in difficult conditions to restore power and we are very grateful for their efforts.” SMornington Peninsula mayor Cr Antonnia Celi said shire teams had worked closely with the SES in a collaborative effort clear up fallen trees, debris and building damage. “Since the storm on Tuesday, the shire has received more than 560 requests from the community, with the majority being related to vegetation damage/clean-up due to strong winds,” Cr Celi said. “The Shire’s environmental health team also worked with food businesses that had lost power. “The shire is responding to requests and will be involved in ongoing response and recovery from this storm event. “On behalf of the community, I thank the emergency services and shire team members who have been involved in the clean-up, and ask the community to keep up-to-date, listen to key weather warnings and stay safe during severe weather conditions.” The SES has advised peninsula residents to secure loose items around properties, be mindful of hazards on roads, especially those that a poorly lit, and to not park or shelter under trees during a storm. To request assistance from the SES, call 132 500. To report storm damage to shire property, call 1300 850 600. For life-threatening emergencies call 000.

Greater need for Black Spot money QUESTIONS have been raised over the choice of an intersection in Mt Eliza for Black Spot funding when accident statistics show there are more dangerous intersections nearby. “Several other locations warrant works and should have had a higher priority,” former Mornington Peninsula Shire councillor Leigh Eustace said. The shire’s successful bid for $767,000 to build a roundabout at the intersection of Mt Eliza Way with Wimborne and Kenaud avenues was announced last month by Dunkley MP, Bruce Billson. “This section of Mt Eliza Way is very busy with traffic heading into the village and vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians accessing schools, community facilities, medical services and other local neighbourhoods,” Mr Billson said. The total cost of the roundabout is estimated at $810,000, with the shire paying the extra $43,000. Mr Eustace said the decision to fund the roundabout was based on four accidents being recorded at the intersection over four years. Records show that injuries were sustained in one accident, although people were taken to hospital in three of the four crashed. Mr Eustace says the people were taken to hospital mainly because they were over 75 years old. The fourth accident involved a cyclist riding at night without lights. “This is a wasteful use of precise Commonwealth funds in the times of a budget emergency,” Mr Eustace said. “Other alternatives were not considered, such as extending the 50 kilometre speed zone just west of the proposed roundabout before the village.” Mr Eustace said intersections which had seen fatalities and numerous accidents but did not attract Black Spot funding included Tower Rd, Volitans Av and Nepean Highway; Wooralla Drive and Two Bays Rd.
Diet a factor in mental health POOR diet choices and regular consumption of fast food or junk food closely correlate to mental health issues, a positive mental health forum at Mornington Secondary College was told last week. This is most evident among girls and women, according to associate professor Felice Jacka, of Deacon University. Her work in the field of nutritional psychology is developing an evidence-based public health message for the primary prevention of common mental disorders. She noted that those with healthy ‘traditional’ diets – like the Mediterranean diet – are about 30 per cent less likely to suffer depression or anxiety. Jointly run by the Rotary Club of Mornington and Australian Rotary Health, the forum focused on better understanding strategies to address and prevent the onset of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. About 230 people at the forum heard from psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and professor Jane Fisher. Professor Fisher identified a range of factors affecting women’s mental health during pregnancy, and in the first 12 months after the birth of a child. She said postpartum maternal health could influ-

ence early childhood development. She said a stronger mother-child connection, and higher levels of maternal responsivity, was associated with higher infant cognitive ability and lower rates of behavior problems in pre-school children. Dr Carr-Gregg produced statistics associated with adolescent girls and boys showing an increase in the incidence of teenage girls’ mental health disorders. They showed that 75 per cent of mental illnesses emerged before the age of 25, and that around 80
per cent of males and 70 per cent of females aged 16-24, with mental disorders, do not seek help. Dr Carr-Gregg challenged the community to encourage young adults to speak more openly about their emotional health. Substance abuse among boys and self-harm among girls was also discussed. Club member John Parkinson told the audience: “This is one of the better things our club has conducted in recent years.” Stephen Taylor

Highs and lows bring colour to the skies ALTHOUGH we complain about the vagaries of the weather, its ups and downs, highs and lows, provide a variety that is sometimes hard to credit. A few days of calm before the onset of last week’s wild weather provided photographer Gary Sissons with this mirror-like image of a yacht moored off Hastings. The boat could be floating among clouds. On Sunday, Sissons was at Cape Schanck, watching as a succession of squalls were bookended by blue skies. Individual showers were often accompanied by a rainbow, making for a memorable moment.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Skeletons of man and child found in Merricks Compiled by Cameron McCullough MR and Mrs A. Aitken left Melbourne on Wednesday by the Loongana for Launceston en route for Hobart, where their future home will be. *** MESSRS Brody and Mason will hold their monthly sale of stock, Wednesday next. A large yarding of cattle and sheep is advertised for. *** MESSRS A. Scott and Co.’s monthly sale at Tanti on Monday next, which will commence at half past 12 o’clock. *** ABOUT seven nominations were received by the Fiinders campaign committee from persons willing to oppose Sir William Irvine. Regret was ex pressed that Mr J. K. McDougall had not nominated. *** A SLIGHT error occurred in the Frankston Brass Band balance sheet, published in our last week’s issue. The total in the expenditure reads £151 1s 11½d. It should read £153 1s 4½d. *** IN our report of the euchre party in connection with the Mornington Progress Association, in our last issue, an error occurred in ascribing the ladies’ first prize (a valuable hand bag) as the gift of Mr A. E. Bates. It should have read as being donated by the president of the association, Mr F. M. Linley. *** DEPOSITORS in the State Savings Bank are reminded by advertisement that the auditor (Mr L. G. Smith) will be in attendance at the Frankston Bank on Wednesday, 8th July, and at
the Mornington Branch on Thursday 9th July, for the annual inspection of passbooks. It is incumbent upon every depositor to produce his passbook at this time. *** MR “Son” Wilson, the popular player of the Mornington football team, met with a very severe accident on Wednesday afternoon last, caused by the axe he was using slipping and inflicting a nasty cut several inches long across his leg. His brother-in-law, Mr W. Wilson, had the misfortune to crush his hand in a bullock wagon two days previously. *** THERE was a good attendance at the picture show, held in the Mornington Mechanics’ Institute, on Friday night last, in aid of the funds of the Mornington football club. On Wednesday night the “Last Days of Pompeii” was screened, and the Mornington Progress Association will annex the profits. *** THE annual demonstration and concert in connection with the Ragged Boys’ Home and Seaside Home at Frankston will be held in the Auditorium, Collins Street, Melbourne, on Monday evening next when a firstclass programme will be presented, consisting of special bioscope pictures, singing by leading artists, and a display by children of the Mission. The musical portion is under the director ship of Miss Mabel Mattingley. *** THE pair of horses attached to Mr Jacob’s cab, while standing at the Frankston railway station on Monday
last decided to take a trip on their own, and although the wheels were tied, by the time they arrived in Bay street had got up fair speed, but a stop was put to their gallop by Mr R. Dixon, of the Savings Bank, who pluckily ran, clambered up behind and getting on the box, secured the reins and speedily brought the steeds under subjection. He drove them back to the station, unharmed, much to the delight of the owner. ***
THE skeletons of a man and a child were found on Monday above the high water mark between Merricks and Cole’s Beach. The bones were almost entirely buried in the sand and had lain there for many years.
THE annual meeting of the Tyabb Hall will be held on Wednesday next, when the business will be: To receive and adopt annual report and balance sheet, election of secretary, treasurer, caretaker and committee. *** THE skeletons of a man and a child
were found on Monday above the high water mark between Merricks and Cole’s Beach. The bones were almost entirely buried in the sand. Constable O’Shannassy, of Hastings, unearthed the remains, which had lain there for many years. Alongside the adult skeleton were the remains of a pocket knife, only the bone handle being intact. The discovery was made exactly opposite where at one time there had been an old wreck. The remains were brought to Hastings. *** A MEETING for the purpose of forming a gun club will be held at the Hotel Somerville on Tuesday evening next. All interested are invited to attend. *** THE secretary of the Frankston Fire Brigade wishes to acknowledge with thanks the sum of £7 ls, being proceeds of Mr Frederick harp’s concert, given in acknowledgment of work done by the brigade at the late bush fires. *** ON Tuesday last Ganger Nicholls discovered several rifle cartridges and dog spikes on the railway line between Frankston and Langwarrin. He informed the police, and Constable McCormick, after a deal of trouble, discovered that the articles had been placed on the line by two boys. The lads were severely cautioned, and it is not likely they will again go in for the same kind of “joke.” *** RESIDENTS in the vicinity of the Frankston Park complain bitterly of the disreputable conduct of some men who use the pavilion as a resting place. They frequently go there drunk,
and indulge in most foul language, not infrequently. One night last week one of the residents had all the pickets torn off his front fence, and was kept awake most of the night by these unseemly brawlers. *** DURING this week the Government Statist, Mr A. M. Laughton, will post about 37,000 cards to the farmers in the wheat and oat growing districts, with the request that they will furnish the area sown with wheat and oats for the present season, and state the quantity of wheat on the farm on the 30th. As it is a matter of great interest to the public, and to farmers especially, to know the total area under these two important crops, each farmer is requested to fill in his card and return it immediately after the 30th June, so that the information can be compiled and published at the earliest possible date. It is particularly requested that the cards sent to farmers be returned, whether they have sown or not. Schedules are also being sent to the Railway Department, and, by post, to flour mills and wheat stores, with the view of ascertaining the quantities of stocks of wheat and flour on hand at the end of last month,. Holders of wheat in bulk who do not receive a Schedule are requested to communicate with the Government Statist. The Government Statist hopes that all concerned will do their utmost to assist him to make reliable estimates of the area sown and the stocks of wheat and flour on hand, by answering his questions fully and returning the cards and forms promptly. Why Cinderella wears gumboots and other bull By Stuart McCullough I’VE often wondered what went wrong. Cinderella was tying one on, having the time of her life at the Ball before the wheels and, more importantly, slipper came off. Until then, the night had been nothing short of a triumph. She’d blitzed Karaoke with a masterful rendition of Two Princes by The Spin Doctors before crumping herself into oblivion to the sounds of Skrillex. Her dance floor moves caught the eye of a handsome Prince and they were just about to exchange digits when, due to a strictly enforced magical curfew, she had to scarper before her Ford Festiva turned into a pumpkin, taking her e-tag with it. In all that haste, poor Cindy left her shoe behind. How does anyone manage to lose a shoe? This is either an act of high incompetence or, possibly, not everything in fairy tales should be taken at face value. Given that most fairy tales are fairly old, it’s reasonable to assume that as the story has been told and retold, some exaggeration has crept in. Time, I think, lends itself to embellishment. It can make the mundane heroic or the simple spectacular. It’s precisely this principle that has seen my ‘Best on Field’ award of a free hamburger from Brammell’s milk bar for the under 9s match between Tyabb and Tootgarook Junior Football Clubs elevated, over many years, to runner up for the Brownlow medal. I doubt Cinderella was wearing a pair of slippers that fateful evening. To lose footwear under those conditions, there’s only one plausible explanation: Cinderella was wearing gumboots.

Western Port News 1 July 2014
‘If the shoe fits’ is all well and good when you’re talking about a pair of Bata Scouts but hopeless when it comes to gumboots. As kids, we all had a pair. Mud was all around us and you wouldn’t think of walking anywhere outside without your gumboots. In the winter, they stopped water from seeping through to your socks. In summer, they were (at least in theory)
protection against snakes. At the back door of our house was a rack with seven pairs of gumboots. For years, the boots were in descending order of size from my father down to my youngest brother until we outgrew him. My father has what can only be described as ‘goblin feet’. When I left home, my gumboots stayed behind. They were unlikely to
be any use to me at University, or so I thought. Over a number of decades, I watched as they withered. Anecdotes and fairy tales may get bigger over the years, but the opposite is true of unloved footwear. Eventually, they were not so much gumboots as affordable housing for spiders. There comes a point when you should just accept that your gumboots are no longer yours and best off left as an arachnid timeshare resort. We decided to have a working bee at my father’s house. There was wood to be chopped and chores to be done. But before anything else, I needed new gumboots. Attending what looked like an aircraft hanger but was, so my brother assured me, a hardware store, I found rows of them. Some had steelcaps in the toes. Others had satellite navigation. It was clear that the art of gumboot making had come a long way. But not only did I purchase a pair of boots containing more metal than my first car, I also got myself a pair of work gloves and a face shield that made me look like an Storm Trooper understudy on the set of Star Wars. Between my father’s house and the bush is a paddock. In that paddock are a bunch of harmless cows who, when they’re not wasting time playing Angry Birds, spend the hours eating grass. There is, however, one bull. In his infinite wisdom, my father decided to separate the bull from the cows for the week leading up to the working bee. Which means that old Boris the Bull was in a somewhat heightened state. These, it must be said, were not ideal conditions. It’s been years since I’ve chopped
up firewood. This might explain how I managed to miss the particular log I was aiming for and break the axe in half. For this reason my brother decided that – steel-cap gumboots or not – it would be better for everyone if I didn’t use the chainsaw. With wood duly chopped, I loaded up the wheelbarrow and set out on my perilous journey from the trees back to the house. Sensing weakness, Boris the Bull stood and watched as I huffed and puffed my way over the creek and towards the top gate. He then started doing some huffing and puffing of his own. I should say that whilst I’ve seen Crocodile Dundee at least twice, I am not drawn to the idea of trying to subdue a giant bovine by using the ‘Hang loose’ hand signal. It might have worked for Paul Hogan, but I preferred a different approach – I bolted. Boris immediately took off in pursuit. I ran like a man who, quite literally, had lead in his shoes and could almost feel the steam from the beast’s nostrils as I raced up the hill. With one last superhuman effort, I leapt over the fence and my right foot slipped free of my boot. As I tumbled onto the front yard I was safe, but one gumboot short of a working bee. I immediately retired. Last I heard, Boris was travelling around the peninsula asking people to try on the gumboot. It’s only a matter of time before the inevitable happens. When the moment arrives, I will only say that wish Boris and Cinderella all the happiness in the world. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

*** CELEBRATING 50 years of performing, Suzi Quatro returns in January 2015 for her last Australian tour. With 30 Australian tours under her belt, this will be the final chance for Australian fans to see their rocker Suzi on stage. Australian promoter Harley Medcalf, said: “This will be our 15th Suzi Quatro tour. Duet Productions did the first ever Australian tour in the 70s, so it’s a great honour to be presenting the Final One for the Wild One. Born in Detroit Michigan, Suzi was raised in a musical family who all played various instruments. Suzi made her stage debut, playing bongos in her father’s Jazz band, The Quatro Trio. From
an early age, she studied classical piano and percussion and at the age of 14 began an all-girl band with her sister Patti calling themselves The Pleasure Seekers. Suzi was ‘told’ she would be playing bass guitar which was as tall as she was and also became the lead singer. In 1969 they changed their name to Cradle and it was this band that caught the attention of famed record producer Mickie Most who offered her a solo contract Between 1973 and 1980 Suzi Quatro featured in the British charts for 101 weeks and to date sold over 55 million records including hits, 48 Crash, Too Big, Devil Gate Drive, Daytona Demon, The Wild One, She’s In Love With You, Rock Hard and her duet with Chris Norman, Stumblin’ In. In 1977 Suzi then spread her wings and headed for the small screen playing Fonzie’s girlfriend, Leather Tuscadero in Happy Days. She continued to act in other television series including Minder, Dempsey and Makepeace, Absolutley Fabulous and Midsomer Murders. In 1986 Suzi made her West End debut playing the lead of Annie Oakley in Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun receiving critical acclaim. Suzi was one of the first rock and roll acts to tour to Russia where she performed to 500,000 people in six weeks in 1989. A Grain of Salt AS an actor in years past I’m appalled at the $28.2 million cut to Australia Council funding; moreso when considering the $245 million allocated for school chaplains to provide spiritual guidance. True, Christopher (Pyne) says no proselytising, but there will be. They won’t do any more damage than a mosque in Bendigo apart from bringing all the ratbags (Aussie self-styled Christian ratbags) out in force. The problem is the emerging pattern: Science, CSIRO, Climate Commission, the ABC and those Coalition (‘Bad mouth the Labor Party’) Commissions. We all form part of Tony Abbott’s revenge; a beating, a kicking, hopefully never to recover. Our mate Billy (Shorten) appears to favour this spending on the chaplains. Also no objection to detention facilities and bodyguarded Julie Bishop’s call to reclassify East Jerusalem as ‘disputed’ rather than ‘occupied’. So much for taking sides. “Revenge is sweet” said the Lord, or as Shakespeare said: “Heat not a furnace for your foe so hot, that it do singe yourself” Hopefully, or lost in space. *** I WORRY about AFL footballers. Council is currently considering a proposal to officially name the unnamed pedestrian walkway between 50 and 52 High Street, Hastings (running north from High Street to the Coles car park) ‘O’Toole Walk’. The suggested name is in honour of Mr. Dermot O’Toole, who was tragically killed during an armed robbery at his jewellery business in High Street, Hastings in July 2013. Mr. O’Toole had operated his jewellery store for 26 years and was well respected by the local community and fellow traders.

Kangas fall to a new low PENINSULA LEAGUE By Toe Punt LANGWARRIN reached a new low on Saturday, humiliated in front of their home crowd by archenemy Pines. The Kangaroos played without spirit and passion, a far cry from the side that won their opening five games of the season. Langwarrin have now lost six games on the trot and are no certainty to beat Karingal this weekend. The Kangas are playing like they are scared to be offensive. They are reactive. Pines on the other hand are playing inspired football, now winning their past three games. On Saturday, they were six goals up by quarter time. The margin was 42 points at the last change and while Langwarrin predictably came back in the final quarter, they still went down 12.10 (82) to 9.16 (70). Chris Guganovic was clearly the best player on the ground. At no stage was he tagged or even respected by
the opposition. Guy Hendry completely dominated and intimidated. He finished with a career-high seven goals playing across half-forward. Jake Berry was again dominant and Jamie Messina ran around doing as he liked. Beau Muston with five goals and Nick Tuddenham, who was back from Frankston VFL, were clearly Langwarrin’s best. It was a struggle to find any other good players outside of these two. A number of weeks ago, Pines’ coach Steve Ryan resigned from the position, paving way for a new coach to come in next season. If the Pythons can maintain this level of intensity and spirit, they will become a very appealing proposition next season for any prospective coach. The Kangas on the other hand need to get back to enjoying their footy. They look like a group that isn’t enjoying things and it’s becoming a chore. They are frightened of failing. Frankston YCW once again stamped its authority on the competi-
tion, leading all afternoon to thump Mt Eliza to the tune of 44 points. The Stonecats held the Redlegs scoreless in the opening term and restricted them to just one behind in the final term. The home side doubled the score of the Redlegs, winning 12.16 (88) to 7.2 (44). YCW is playing with renewed spirit and enthusiasm under new coach Scott Mathers and the results are evidence of that. On Saturday, the Stonecats had nine different goal kickers, while Josh Pickess returned from the VFL and dominated. Tony Lester also was at his best yet again and Kyle Hutchison found plenty of the footy and finished with two goals. Sam Wettenhall was Mt Eliza’s only productive forward with four majors while Rob D’Orazio and Jordan Moncrieff tried hard. In the grand final replay, it was Edithvale-Aspendale that got the chocolates again over Bonbeach, winning a thriller 13.20 (98) to 11.19 (85). The Eagles opened up a 32-point lead kicking with the wind in the
opening term and while Bonbeach kept coming, they never got in front. Inaccuracy in the opening half prevented the Eagles from winning comfortably. They had 14 scoring shots to just two in the first quarter but only netted four majors. Jarrod Garth continues to be a revelation in this competition, booting ten goals in the past two weeks (five on Saturday) after sitting out three weeks due to a hamstring tear. Tim Mavric also returned and quickly found his best and Jordy Derbyshire continues his ‘fly under the radar’ season. Cal McQueen booted three for the Sharks while Gary Carpenter continues his purple patch of form with another three club votes. Jackson Casey and Dylan Jones were also at the top of their game. Many believed that on the closed spaces of Edithvale, Bonbeach would win. It seems they still have some work to do to get a win over the Eagles. Mornington had 12 goal kickers in its 20.23 (143) to 9.5 (59) win against Karingal.
A devil of a time: The weather was gloomy, and so was the mood for Pearcedale, going down to Rye by five goals. Picture: Doug Farr

James Cameron returned from Frankston Dolphins with four goals and a dominant display while Emilio Bitters and coach Stuart Seagar with three goals also took charge. Michael Burke was at his vintage best for the Bulls while Hadley Tomamichel kicked three goals in a strong display. Seaford turned the tables on Chelsea on Saturday, coming from behind to record a really strong 12.20 (92) to 9.9 (63) victory. The Tigers were mauled in the opening quarter and found themselves 29 points down at the first change. The home side still trailed by 15 points at the long interval and by the same margin at the last change. However, with the wind at their backs, Seaford kicked 6.9 to one behind in the final term. Johnathon Haidon and Matt Herbert aren’t well known Seaford names but these two dominated on Saturday, while Rory Luxton and Dean Kemble were also dominant. Daniel Aarsman (four goals) and Brad Clarke tried their best for the Gulls.

Blues coach out for season NEPEAN LEAGUE
By Toe Punt HASTINGS’ bad run with injuries continued on Saturday in its one point loss to Dromana. In a game that had everything, the Tigers’ Anthony Bruhn was the only player to kick a goal in the final term, which was enough to get over the line 8.11 (59) to 7.16 (58). Blues’ coach Brendan Dunne broke his arm in the first quarter and won’t play again this season. Dunne’s injury adds to those of Daniel Wishart and Alex Goodingham, who are both out for the season, while Dylan Hand and Peter Mawson will miss the next four or five weeks with shoulder injuries. Jason Kestle is still weeks away with bone spurs in his ankle. It was a fitting match for these two clubs, who came together to play in heritage jumpers to raise awareness and money for bowel cancer. Both clubs auctioned their jumpers at the end of the game. Obviously, as was the case with all games on Saturday, the wind played havoc and favoured one end of the ground. Hastings kicked with the wind in the opening term at Pier St Oval but couldn’t take advantage of it. Losing Dunne also threw the Blues’ structures into a bit of chaos. The Tigers booted 4.2 to Hastings’ five behinds in the second quarter. This was probably the difference between the sides. Dromana took advantage of its opportunities while the Blues wasted some of theirs. Hastings finished with 23 scoring shots to 19. They booted 5.10 to 5.6 in the second and third quarters. Jay Neratzoglou was superb down back for the Tigers and led from the front while Jay Hutchinson and Daniel Guerts were also on top of their games. Steven Gaertner and Ash Waterstone kicked two goals each for the winners. Colin McVeigh and Justin Berry were outstanding for the Blues again, while Will Jolley was also excellent. Crib Point celebrated its hard fought 11-point win against Rosebud on Saturday with a major announcement. Former Somerville skipper Aaron Murray has signed with the Magpies. The Magpies were keen to replace key forward Torin Petrie, who decided a couple of weeks ago to head back home to St Arnaud and finish the season there. After such a wonderful start to the
season, Pies coach Duane Annable was keen to get a replacement quickly. Murray hasn’t played a game of footy since undergoing a knee reconstruction a couple of seasons ago. Murray joins former teammate Glenn Boyd at the Pies. Boyd booted four goals and was instrumental in the win on Saturday. When the game needed to be won in the last quarter, with his side trailing by eight points at the last change, Boyd booted three of his team’s five last quarter goals. The Pies led by one point at quarter time and by eight points at half time. Dean Warry and Brad Arnold were outstanding for the winners and James Cook was a tower in the ruck. Ryan Spooner was close to the best man on the ground with four goals for the Buds while Tommy Baker and Daniel Hickey were also outstanding. The Magpies remain in third place on the ladder, a game clear of Sorrento in fourth and two games clear of Rye in fifth. Rosebud on the other hand is now three games off third spot, currently sitting in seventh position on the table. Frankston Bombers trailed all afternoon against Somerville on Saturday. However the booted 5.6 to 3.1 in the final term to win 10.15 (75) to 10.13 (73). Matt Harris was outstanding in the win for the Bombers with four goals, while James Degenhardt and Mitch Bosward dominated through the middle of the ground. Duncan Proud was also very good for the winners. Travis Bravo finished with four goals for the Eagles while Brad Rowe, Luke Collie and Kane McKenzie picked up the votes. Rye moved back inside the top five with a five goal win against Pearcedale. Rhett Sutton and Ryan Semmel dominated through the middle and around the ground for the Demons while Adam Kirkwood returned to some of his best. Chris Gleeson finished with four majors while Andrew Dean played predominantly forward of centre and finished with two goals. Troy Jacobson and Mitch White were the best of the Panthers and Pat Heijden booted three majors. Red Hill maintained its position in the top three with a comfortable 56 point win against Devon Meadows. Devon booted three goals in the second quarter and only booted a

further two points for the rest of the match. They were smashed 11.11 (77) to 3.3 (21). The defensive style of play from the Panthers continued, running two players behind the footy from the first bounce. It’s unattractive and isn’t going to win games of footy. Michael Mock was outstanding for the winners, as was Nick Bateman, while Jarryd Douglas finished with three majors. Steve McInnes and Clint Walker were the best of Devon, while Alex Doria played his best game for the season.
Sorrento had eight goal kickers against Tyabb on Saturday, Ryan Jeffrey returning with four, along with Leigh Poholke and Dave Lawson. Ben Schwarze booted three goals while James Hallahan and Benny McCormack dominated. Craig Conlan and Ash Souter were the best of the Yabbies, while Jake Anderson finished with two goals.

Coach downed, leaders stand up HASTINGS FNC By Phil Stone Seniors: We travelled down to Dromana to take on the competition’s top side. Our club was under no illusion that this game was going to be a massive test for the Hastings Football/Netball club. The boys started the game with the same intense pressure seen in its previous match against Rye. At about the 15-minute mark our inspirational leader and coach Brendan Dunne made a bone crunching tackle but came off second best, breaking his arm. The team leaders at the club rallied and all stood up to make this game one of the most memorable for the season so far. We went in at half-time a couple of goals down after the Dunney incident, regrouped, made some changes and came out and played a terrific brand of footy in the 3rd quarter to be level. In the final quarter as the rain and wind started to pelt down our boys kicked the first to take the lead before the game turned into a seesaw battle of desperation, the boys put their bodies on the line, we unfortunately went down by 1 point. As a club it was a great test, which we passed with aplomb, all our leaders at the club made a difference. We couldn’t be any prouder of them all. We now look forward to meeting Red Hill at home next Saturday. Go Blues. Reserves: Travelled down the
highway to take on Dromana to try and stay in the five in horrible windy conditions. Dromana kicked with a strong wind in the first quarter, the boys had to just chip and chip against the breeze but managed to play a ripper first quarter and be jusr a goal down. Into the second quarter we played some great football to make it a very tight contest. At half time the boys were asked to keep applying the pressure and hold their own to give themselves a chance going into the last quarter. It was a struggle for both sides with the ball going up and down the ground without scoring. We went down by only nine point. Better players on the day were K.Delahaye, C.Lehmann and A.Thissen Under 18s: (Report by Aaron Wilson)Tyabb-Hastings were defiant in their round 10 defeat to third place Sorrento. Whilst the end margin was 35 points it did not reflect the flow of the game. A hard-contested game for most of the day, Sorrento were able to kick crucial goals when it mattered. 28 points adrift at quarter time the boys regrouped and worked their way back in to the match, winning the second quarter by 10 points. The third quarter was a tough affair but Sorrento were able to pile on 3 quick goals punishing Tyabb-Hastings. Laz Cuttriss was as strong as ever around the contest and used his pace to great effect. Midfielders
Logan Pearson and Wade De La Haye also held their own, whilst backman Brock Regan was solid in defence taking marks and setting up the play. Much of the last quarter was a scrap with only one goal scored. Credit to Tyabb-Hastings as they didn’t let Sorrento blow them out of water. The game however, ended on a sour note with defender Brock Regan being shirt fronted and heavily concussed. A disappointing way to end the match. We wish Brock a speedy recovery. Next week the club is at home against Red Hill at Hastings. Our Auskick and Junior club will be there at half time. Don’t forget our band night next week: Flange live at the Hastings Club $10 a ticket prebook at the club or via Kara Hull. Netball:The girls went down to Dromana and played the girls at Dromana Primary School on a wet winter’s day Fortunately the game was indoors. Unfortunately we didn’t come away with wins but the girls had the most competitive day of netball across all grades that we have had all year. They are showing much improvement. A Grade Coaches awards Ebony and Shaye. B Grade Renee and Talia. C Grade Brooke and Abbie. At home next week, girls.
Tight contest: Dromana downed Hastings by 1 point in their Nepean League game. Pictures: Andrew Hurst

Pies silence doubters CRIB POINT FNC
By Jared Newton ANOTHER game against quality opposition, another game where Crib Point found themselves trailing in the final quarter, another game where the Pies found a way to win. Both teams desperately needed to win on Saturday. Rosebud to keep their season alive, Crib Point to keep Sorrento at bay in the double chance position. In windy conditions it was a hard day to get a flow going and the side that was able to push forward and adapt to the conditions was going to have their noses in front. It was tight all day although it was Rosebud who looked like they had the better of the Pies as they adapted to the conditions a little better. Despite leading most of the day, Crib Point refused to go away. Dean Warry has been a revelation across half back and again was providing plenty of drive and Brad Arnold found himself in and under everything and Sloper had the better the Schulz but despite all this the Pies were behind. At the final change Crib Point found themselves 9 adrift and when Rosebud snagged the first goal early, the game almost looked out of reach for the Pies. Enter Cyclone Boyd. The man mountain put a show on in the last quarter with four goals and half a dozen clunked grabs. His four straight even more impressive with the wind blowing as strong as it was. Nothing could stop him,
not even the point post which came off second best to a Boyd hip and shoulder. Council will be down this week to assess the damage. Week after week Crib Point have had their legitimacy questioned but surely now after claiming another quality scalp they have silenced the doubters. The reserves put their worst performance of the season to go down by 37 points to a disciplined and slick Rosebud outfit. After going toe to toe in the first quarter, Rosebud began to kick away in the second and never really looked threatened as the Pies slipped to 5-5 heading into a tough few weeks. How the team responds is entirely in their own hands and as a team who play their best footy with their backs against the wall they need to respond against Devon Meadows this week. Again the under 18s were solid without getting the win. Rosebud are a top of the table undefeated side and Crib Point hassled and threatened despite being a little undermanned to go down by 8 points. I’ve been saying it for a few weeks now but there are wins around the corner for this side should they keep the boys together. It’s heartening to see the boys sticking together each week and the rewards will come, if not this year, definitely in 2015 when the bulk of the side are second year players.
