Stars to pad up for Luke

Blessed beginnings PADUA College’s new Tyabb campus has been blessed from on high, with Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart visiting the Catholic school to lead an official opening ceremony, much to the delight of proud principal Christopher Houlihan, left. Full story and more pictures on Page 13.

By Chris Brennan DOZENS of sports stars and celebrities descend on Western Port Sunday for a cricket match to honour murdered Tyabb schoolboy Luke Batty. The match is at 1pm at Tyabb Reserve, where sports-mad Luke played cricket and ultimately met his death at the hands of his father. Among confirmed participants for the Twenty20 match are Test cricketers Matthew Wade and Bryce McGain, AFL footballers Michael Hurley and Michael Hibberd, Hawthorn champion Peter Hudson, actors Gary Sweet and Rhys Muldoon, and media personality Anthony “Lehmo Lehmann. Organisers said there would be “plenty more well-known guests, with a number of high-profile Aussie cricketers and AFL footballers expected to get on board. There will be food, children’s activities and live entertainment, including a performance by Bruce Springsteen tribute band Thunder Road. More than 2000 visitors are expected to attend and funds raised will go toward building new practice nets. Also set to play is Hastings police officer Senior Sergeant Alan Courtney, who has already visited the club to practice with Yabbies juniors in the wake of last month’s tragic events. Senior Sergeant Courtney said it was important Luke’s teammates felt comfortable and secure while continuing to enjoy playing cricket. Tyabb Cricket Club president Sam Taranto said the event was supported by Luke’s mother Rosie Batty, who will be attending, and had been organised as a celebration of Luke’s love for cricket and “to put some smiles back on faces. He said Luke would be forever remembered as a passionate cricketer and his loss had been felt deeply across

the cricketing community. “This is more about trying to bring some happiness back to the community and the cricket club following the tragic loss of Luke, rather than just a fundraiser, he said. “It’s only $5 for adults and children under 16 are free, so we’re really trying to make it a celebration that’s open to the whole community. “The funds raised will go toward building new cricket nets after the old ones were taken down following the tragedy. Luke was killed by his father Greg Anderson inside the cricket nets at Bungan Reserve on 12 February. He died from severe head injuries after his father hit him with a cricket bat in front of onlookers following a regular weekly cricket training session at the Tyabb sports ground. Anderson was fatally shot by police following the incident. The Australian cricket team wore black arm bands during the Test series in South Africa in honour of Luke, and coach Darren Lehmann offered his condolences on behalf of the players. “It’s obviously a tragic set of events and utterly devastating for the people of Tyabb, especially Tyabb Cricket Club, Lehmann said. “Our hearts go out to Luke’s family, his mother Rosie, his mates and everyone at Tyabb Cricket Club. Sheffield Shield and Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association players also wore black armbands during matches following the tragedy. Tyabb Cricket Club’s under-14 team dedicated their recent MPCA premiership win to Luke. Ms Batty has remained strongly supportive of the cricket club in the wake of her son’s death and said she hoped more players would sign up with the Yabbies in memory of Luke.

New group joins port opposition

Galactic quest for Hastings beauty PAGEANT queen Jessica Martini has already taken on the world; now she’s ready to conquer the galaxy. The 25-year-old Hastings resident is representing the Mornington Peninsula as one of four Victorian finalists in the Miss Galaxy Australia pageant. Having previously competed in the Miss World and Miss Humanity pageants, Ms Martini hit new heights after being selected as a national finalist in the international pageant. Should she win the Miss Australia title at next month’s national finals in Queensland, she’ll be heading to the United States to compete with the world’s most beautiful women for the Miss Galaxy crown. Ms Martini said that while Miss Galaxy entrants were judged on their outward appearance, organisers placed a heavy emphasis on “overall” beauty and strongly encouraged charity work. “Unlike other pageants, you don’t need to be a supermodel to enter Miss Galaxy,” she said. “There are no height or weight restrictions so it’s really about beauty within. “The competition encourages participants to be involved with their community and it places a strong emphasis on charity work.

Finals frontier: Hastings resident Jessica Martini has won through to the national finals of the Miss Galaxy pageant.

“So it’s all about getting out into the community and supporting local causes and events as well as helping with fundraising activities.” Ms Martini said she was usually involved with Pink Ribbon Day, but the competition’s chosen Australian charities were the Make a Wish Foundation and Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Warriors program. Victorian participants have so far raised $43,000. She is hosting a a charity movie screening of Russell Crowe’s latest film Noah at Mornington Cinema on Thursday 3 April to raise funds for the charities before she heads off for the four-day

national finals pageant on 9 April. The secret to success in a competition like Miss Galaxy was “being true to yourself”, she said, adding that pageants gave women a voice to raise issues close to their hearts. “You can’t be fake or try to be someone you’re not,” she said. “Sincerity always shines through and anyone not being true to themselves is quickly found out.” For more information on the movie night and to follow Ms Martini’s quest, visit www.facebook.com/jessicamartini2014. THE Labor Party has aligned itself with groups cautioning against largescale expansion of the Port of Hastings. The ALP’s spokeswoman on ports, Natalie Hutchins, says a second major port within Port Phillip is the most practical and affordable option to handle increased shipping. Ms Hutchins spelt out her party’s views at a meeting in Cowes on Phillip Island on Saturday with new anti-port group Preserve Western Port. The meeting followed a forum in Somers earlier this month attended by about 100 people to hear details of an Australian Conservation Foundation study questioning the economics of an expanded Port of Hastings within a high value conservation area. The new group is likely to coordinate opposition to the port with likeminded groups on the Mornington Peninsula. The Australian Conservation Foundation and the Victorian National Parks Association want the federal government to hold an independent inquiry into port expansion plans, and Victoria to do a cost-benefit analysis. The state government – which remains committed to a new container port at Hastings to take the pressure off the Port of Melbourne by 2030 – has already committed $110 million for various surveys over the next four years under the direction of the Port of Hastings Development Authority.

Meanwhile, it is understood salvage teams have located four of three legs that broke off a barge commissioned by the port authority to undertake geotechnical and geophysical surveys in Western Port. Two of the 18-metre long steel legs fell off after the barge Sea Lift 1 was being prepared for work off Sandy Point on Saturday 22 February. The two remaining legs were lost when the disabled barge was being towed back to a safe anchorage off Cowes.

Schoolyard bullies have had their day By Chris Brennan MORNINGTON Peninsula schools were last week at the forefront of efforts to put an end to bullying. On Friday, Nepean MP and Education Minister Martin Dixon marked the first anniversary of the National Day of Action against Bullying, which aims to stamp out bullying in schools. “During the past year, thousands of students have pledged to be ‘bully stoppers’ and hundreds of thousands of parents, teachers and children have taken on the message of the Bully Stoppers movement – make a stand, lend a hand,” Mr Dixon said. “One in five students nationally is impacted by bullying and the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is a great opportunity to reaffirm the state government’s commitment to stop bullying in all its forms, and recognise the significant progress schools have made since Bully Stoppers began.” Hastings teenager Hannah Swinnerton has been behind local efforts to highlight the effects of bullying. The 19-year-old last week was at Mornington Peninsula radio station RPP-FM to describe her battle to overcome the scars of bullying. “I have been diagnosed with major depression due to being bullied all my schooling days by students and on social media,” she said. “Some of the names I was getting called gave me low self-esteem and I didn’t feel comfortable around a lot of people.” When Hannah reached year 12, she had had enough and wanted to commit suicide, but fortunately a friend and police helped her find help. “I was bullied so much and had enough so sat down in my bedroom and wrote a ‘bullying speech’ about how I felt. I read it out in front of

600 people at my school,” she said. “I was so scared doing it. Everyone was so touched by my story. I had teachers crying and students coming up to me and saying sorry. They said what a good job I did. I don’t know what I would do without my family supporting me. Hannah urged anyone being bullied to tell family and teachers. “Don't suffer in silence. There are many support groups and people who care and can help. “People actually take their own lives over bullying. Everyone should believe in who they are not how perfect they are or have to be.” For more details on anti-bullying efforts, visit bullyingnoway.gov.au or www.education.vic. gov.au/bullystoppers

Tales from the past come to life PUPILS of Balnarring Primary School brought Australian history to life last Friday when they donned period costume of people they had written about in their study of the years 18501950. Parents and school supporters were taken back in time by grade 5 and 6 pupils at their history expo. Teacher Suzanne Litchfield said pupils wrote stories about life in the goldfields and the

Australian immigration experience leavened with fictional elements. “The aim of the project was to use narrative writing techniques along with research to share a creative historical piece,” she said. “Pupils transformed into the character from their narratives to give real life accounts of what life would have been like for those living in the goldfields and what the journey to Australia would have been like for European immigrants.”

Waste trial aims to extend landfill life

Old world meets new THOUSANDS of people from around the region and further afield headed up to Red Hill on Saturday for the show, the famous Red Hill Agriculture and Horticultural Society’s 86th annual event. Red Hill is last show standing on the peninsula and drew competitors of all ages and with all kinds of animals and produce as well as modern attractions such as riders doing tricks on motorbikes, stiltwalkers and food sellers with exotic offerings that would have bamboozled your greatgrandfather. Pioneers of the district would have recognised two regular crowd favourites – the woodchopping and working dog demonstrations in the main arena. Some things should never change. The show is not technically over just yet – the Clydesdales and Heavy Harness Show is on Saturday 5 April at Boneo Park Equestrian Centre with show jumping on Saturday 5 April and Sunday 6 April at the equestrian centre on Boneo Rd. For details, call 5989 2357 or visit www.redhillshow.com.au

By Mike Hast THE shire council wants residents to halve the 30,000 tonnes of food waste, garden clippings, rubbish and recyclables being sent to rubbish tips, or landfill, each year. Mornington Peninsula Shire launched its “Think Less Waste” campaign this month and is seeking households to join the three-month trial. The campaign follows revelations last year the shire’s only landfill in Truemans Rd, Rye, could be filled in five years, and dumping costs were rising at all Victorian landfills. The peninsula’s waste management group, which includes councillors and shire officers, will lose its independence this year when it is forced by the state government to join the Melbourne metropolitan waste group. This could see even higher waste fees being paid by peninsula residents. It is in all residents’ interests to keep the Rye tip open for as long as possible. Think Less Waste is a free, three-month program that provides information, resources, tools and workshops for residents to reduce waste and save money. Households taking part will receive facts sheets, hints and tips to reduce waste in the home as well as shopping smarter; access to experts; free admittance to events and workshops; and a toolkit. The shire said new research showed half of all waste in household rubbish bins was “needlessly going to landfill”. An audit had revealed 40 per cent of an average household garbage bin was “food waste that could have been composted or avoided all together”. Ten per cent of waste being put in the green bins was materials including steel cans and cardboard that could be recycled. The mayor, Cr Antonella Celi, said “if all residents knew about the full range of items that could be recycled, and more of us started home composting, we could make a huge dent in our waste figures”. She said some residents were putting the wrong things in recycling bins. “Plastic bags, and recyclable items in plastic bags, were key contaminants found in kerbside recycling bins. “One contaminated kerbside recycling bin can result in the whole truck of recyclables being sent to landfill.” For more information or to sign up, go to: www.mornpen.vic.gov.au/thinklesswaste or email thinklesswaste@mornpen.vic.gov.au The campaign is on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/thinklesswaste

Emergency plans

Fragile history: Shire contractors have damaged 90-year-old bollards, above, surrounding Somerville’s war memorial while moving it to Fruit Growers Reserve but they will be fully restored by an historic stonemason. The memorial at the corner of Jones Rd and Clarinda St, left, is being moved in time for Anzac Day.

Race to move memorial for Anzac Day By Mike Hast SHIRE contractors are racing to move Somerville’s war memorial before Anzac Day next month. The job has been complicated by three of nine bollards surrounding the cenotaph being damaged when they were moved from the current site on the corner of Jones Rd and Clarinda St to the new location in Fruit Growers Reserve, also in Jones Rd. Derek Rotter of the shire’s infrastructure team said one bollard had evidence of previous breakage and repair. “Two others had existing fractures and cracked in the early stages of dismantling,” he said. “The three bollards will be fully restored by a qualified historic stonemason (as recommended by a con-

servation architect) and reinstated at Fruit Growers Reserve.” He said relocation of the cenotaph had been very carefully planned. “The shire appointed an experienced heritage adviser who is closely monitoring all aspects of the project.” But chair of the National Trust’s peninsula branch, Judy Walsh, questioned how the bollards had been damaged. “In my experience there have always been guidelines or a scope of works setting out best practice conservation methods for any restoration project,” she said. “What I have seen so far does not appear best practice conservation and I am concerned for repair capabilities of the three broken bollards.” Ms Walsh said the shire and its con-

tractor needed to consider if reinstating the chain that loops through each bollard would cause further damage if people sat on the chain. Area councillor Lynn Bowden, who has championed moving the memorial as well as re-establishing the town’s Avenue of Honour since she was elected in 2008, said she had not been told the bollards had been damaged but knew they were in poor condition because of their age. “Councillors leave works like this to shire officers but I have been keeping an eye on progress as Anzac Day approaches,” she said. “I’ve been told by officers the memorial will be ready for 25 April.” Cr Bowden has allocated money from her ward discretionary fund to move the memorial.

She said it and the Avenue of Honour were important projects to honour Somerville’s servicemen and women. The new memorial site would “enable the community a greater opportunity to appreciate the beauty and significance of the cenotaph”. The memorial project was initially planned to be completed by the end of 2013. Somerville’s war memorial was built in 1923 at the intersection of Frankston-Flinders Rd and Eramosa Road West. It was moved to the Jones Rd and Clarinda St corner in 1966. It honours people who were killed or served in the First World War and Second World War and has plaques for wars or “actions” in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam.

THE state government will give Mornington Peninsula Shire $240,000 over the next two financial years for emergency management. Mornington MP David Morris said the government’s Municipal Emergency Resourcing Program would assist councils “prepare local communities and businesses for emergencies”. Mr Morris said the shire played “a crucial role in emergency management, primarily around planning for an emergency response, preparing communities and providing support to services such as the CFA, Department of Environment and Primary Industries, SES and Victoria Police”. Government grants paid for shire emergency management officers to be trained, plans to be prepared, fire prevention work, participation in multi-agency relief exercises, and running of the Vulnerable Persons Register, he said.

The minister said the shire council should now prepare documents for the process “without delay. Mr Borzecki, who grew up in Hastings and has owned the marina for almost 30 years, says he has spent about $1 million on studies covering Aboriginal heritage, flora and fauna, economic viability, acid sulphate soils, coastal hazards relating to predicted sea level rise, water circulation, landscape and fire risk, and an environment management plan. Expansion will see the removal of coastal vegetation. Mr Borzecki has bought 100 hectares on the northwest corner of French Island as a “vegetation offset. Mr Borzecki said 870 jobs would be created during the two-year construction period and 200 jobs once completed. The project was nearly scuttled in early 2012 by a bird that has not been seen in the area for more than 25 years – the orange-bellied parrot. The critically endangered parrot breeds in Tasmania and flies across Bass Strait to spend winter in southern mainland Australia, including Victoria. Fewer than 50 parrots exist in the wild and there are about 200 in captive breeding programs at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria as well as in wildlife centres in Tasmania, NSW and South Australia. The bird once wintered in the Yaringa area. Mr Borzecki said the marina expansion would not be on the saltmarsh, the parrots’ habitat.

July but the process stalled inside the shire. Cr Bowden said she was going in to bat for Yaringa as the process had dragged on for too long. “The project was on the drawing board when I was elected to the council in 2008, she said. “It’s time to shine a light on it: Mr Borzecki has federal approval and it’s hard to believe a project that will create construction jobs, ongoing employment and boost recreational boating in Western Port has taken so long. Cr Bowden said the council had previously supported the process to amend the planning scheme but it had been set aside while Mr Borzecki sought federal government environment approval. She said there had also been a delay about whether the state government or the shire council would be the planning authority for the project. State Planning Minister Matthew Guy wrote to the shire council in 2011 confirming it could go ahead and start the planning amendment process. The project then stalled while Mr Borzecki met federal environment rules. Mr Guy wrote to the shire council again last October after it had told him that Mr Borzecki wanted Mr Guy to be the planning authority. “While I recognise that the project is of importance to the Mornington Peninsula and wider region, I am not of the view that it would be appropriate for me to be the planning authority for the amendment, Mr Guy wrote.

By Mike Hast THE long-running proposal to expand Yaringa Boat Harbour at Somerville is expected to reach a key milestone this week. Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors will be asked by Cr Lynn Bowden to support her move to start the process of changing the planning scheme to allow the $50 million project to go ahead. The process has the support of state Planning Minister Matthew Guy. Yaringa owner Stefan Borzecki has been formally trying since 2009 to win approval to excavate a new 300-metre long channel to create 180 new wet berths. The project would see the precinct expanded from 600 to 1000 wet and dry berths for recreational boats as well as construction of 180 holiday apartments beside the new channel, a controversial element that has attracted criticism from conservationists. Mr Borzecki won approval from the federal government last June after a two-year process to meet requirements of the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The Act was triggered because the project could potentially affect wetlands of international importance, listed threatened species and listed migratory species. The next step was for the shire council to ask the state government to start the process of amending the shire’s planning scheme to allow the development. It was thought this would occur last

‘Resign’ call passes without any takers

Horse talk: Mornington Peninsula Equine Landcare group members Vicci and Ruby Halchenko, Sue Day, Helen Burke and Gai Van Staveren with Chopper the horse.

Horse talk proves fertile fodder PENINSULA horse owners are invited to a workshop hosted by Mornington Peninsula Equine Landcare group to learn about sustainable horse property management. It will feature advice from experts Jane and Stuart Myers this Sunday at Boneo Park. Main Ridge property owners Gai and John Van Staveren attended the group’s first workshop and said it gave them knowledge and skills to work toward a well-managed horse property. “It was a tremendous opportunity to learn about sustainable property management,” Ms Van Staveren said. The couple bought their property three years ago and said they were overjoyed to finally have a place to enjoy with their children, grandchildren and animals. But they quickly realised their dream property was suffering invasion from pittosporum

and other weeds and was prone to pugging (soil structural decline) in winter. Like many “tree changers”, they had a strong desire to care for their land but had limited experience in sustainable land management. “Taking good care of our land is equally as important as caring for our horses,” she said. Ms Van Staveren has since become a champion for sustainable horse management and is now president of the Equine Landcare group. The Sustainable Horse Property Management workshop is from 9am-3.30pm on Sunday 30 March at Boneo Park Equestrian Centre, Boneo Rd. To book, email Vicci Halchenko at vic_jones6@ hotmail.com For more information about the Mornington Peninsula Equine Landcare group, email jacqueline. salter@mornpen.vic.gov.au

By Keith Platt MEMBERS of Somers Foreshore Committee last week refused to resign as demanded by fellow member David Gill, who is now calling for an end to “secrecy” surrounding some of the group’s activities. “I believe all decisions [by the committee] should be made public,” Mr Gill said on Monday. In a letter to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, he outlined what he saw as inconsistences in the approach taken toward the foreshore group by an officer of the department. He also blamed the officer for red tape that prevented volunteer group FoCBaW (Friends of Coastal Banksia Woodlands) from continuing its environmental restoration works on Somers foreshore. Mr Gill, a resident of neighbouring Balnarring Beach, joined the Somers Foreshore Committee in late 2013 and is one of two contenders to be chairman – a position yet to be filled. He blamed cronyism, politics and ignorance for much of what he said was wrong with coastal management and now wanted “anyone who has done anything illegal on the foreshore” to be excluded from joining the committee. On the eve of last Tuesday’s meeting, Cr Gill told The News (“Coastwatcher spells out concerns”) that DEPI was ignoring blatant breaches of private property owners intruding on Crown land and wasting money on unnecessary foreshore works. However, the meeting appeared to have

come and gone without incident. “I called for the resignations, they refused, and someone then said I’m the one who should be resigning,” Mr Gill said. “Other than that, it was quite a good meeting.” Three days later, an email came through from Victoria Purdue, the DEPI officer who liaises with the foreshore committee, apologising for not attending the meeting but commenting on some of the discussions held that night. The email, which has been seen by The News, expressed Ms Purdue’s concerns with leaks from the committee and reminded recipients that all committee members were bound by the public sector standards commissioner’s directors’ code of conduct. “Sensitive information such as who voted a particular way should only be released to the public with the permission of the committee,” Ms Purdue stated. “Volunteers such as yourselves should feel safe enough in committee meetings to discuss sensitive issues openly and vote on issues without fear of persecution within your local community for your particular vote. I am extremely saddened that this has occurred and I hope that no committee member feels that they can no longer be part of the committee due to this incident.” Ms Purdue went on to explain why the committee had been ruled ineligible for further grants and how it could be considered for the next round of Community for Nature Grants. Ms Purdue said she was not aware of “any encroachments on coastal Crown land in Somers”.

Many hands make safety net in the shore break By Keith Platt BEING held underwater in the washing machine-like throws of a shore break is not easy at the best of times. It’s daunting and can be terrifying. But to be dumped when you can’t use your legs, which are wrapped in a sort of rubberised cocoon, must surely be the stuff of nightmares. However, Krista Bailey felt “so safe when it happened to her at Point Leo. “I could feel arms grabbing me – I knew I wasn’t alone, she said. Ms Bailey was one of 118 people with physical and mental disabilities at the beach for a “surfing experience courtesy of the Mornington Peninsula branch of the Disabled Surfers Association. On Saturday 15 March the wind was offshore and the waves not huge, although size doesn’t matter when they rear up and crash onto the sand. Nearly 260 volunteers were on hand to help people with disabilities enjoy a day at the beach. Ms Bailey’s wipeout came when she fell off while lying on a surfboard being pushed by a wave to the beach through a channel formed between two lines of people. The 20 or so people forming the human safety net were standing about a metre apart, ready to reach down and pick her up if she fell off the board. Without this “zone of security there was no way many of the disabled surfers would be able to even contemplate entering the water, let along catch a wave.

“I got dumped and it was so good, Ms Bailey, now sitting high and dry in a wheelchair, tells a passing DSA volunteer who said he’d heard about her underwater experience. “You feel so safe. I’ve never been dumped before, but I could feel their arms grabbing me when I was under water and I knew I wasn’t on my own. “I can sort of paddle in a pool, but there’s no way I could survive out here, no way. With a disarming candour, Ms Bailey told The News: “I will not have a normal lifespan, my heart and lungs are muscles. I doubt I’ll get to 80, it will kill me. The “it she is speaking about is Friedreich’s ataxia, a degenerative muscular disease described by the state government-funded Better Health Channel as a “relatively rare inherited disease of the nervous system characterised by the gradual loss of coordination. “The affected person is unable to control their muscles, which leads to tremors, an unsteady gait and slurred speech. To the casual observer, a person with Friedreich’s ataxia may seem to be drunk. Ms Bailey’s diagnosis fits in with the normal onset of symptoms, “kicking in when she was 13. Now 44, she remembers being considered “the klutz of the family, the one who bumped into things because she was in a hurry. “Mum used to say I was like a bull in a china shop. After her diagnosis, Ms Bailey underwent surgery for curvature of

Dumped but not down: Disabled surfer Krista Bailey makes the most of life while facing an uncertain future.

the spine, but nothing could stop the steady onset of the disease. “Until then I was active like any other kid, riding bikes and everything else. I didn’t know anything was wrong. “But once I had the diagnosis I knew my nerves weren’t working properly. Her sister, older by six years, was found to be clear of Friedreich’s ataxia but her younger brother “got his [positive] diagnosis in his 20s after it kicked in when he was about 18. Ms Bailey says her three children –

daughters 18 and 24 and a 16-year-old son - “are carriers, but won’t suffer it and at least they now know that it’s in the family. There are no records of any family members other than Ms Bailey and her brother having Friedreich’s ataxia. These days Ms Bailey keeps herself as active as possible. It was her third time surfing at Point Leo and she has been participating in the Sailability program at Mornington Yacht Club for the past nine years. She also goes to a gym and has hydrotherapy once a week.

The advance of Friedreich’s ataxia is something she “only notices every now again when I realise I can’t do something that was possible a year before. Padua sows seeds of success PADUA College celebrated “the most significant day” in its 116-year history this month when Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart led an official blessing to open the school’s third peninsula campus at Tyabb. While the Catholic school’s new campus began lessons at the start of the 2014 school year with 145 year 7 and 8 foundation students, it’s official opening was delayed until Friday 14 March, when the archbishop performed a liturgy and blessing. Padua’s Marcelle Ryan described the occasion as “very successful and memorable” for students, parents, staff and more than 100 guests. “All who attended left in a positive spirit, having played an important part

in this historic occasion,” she said. “There was a feeling of pride in the collective achievement, and the many people integral to the success of the building project were acknowledged in a speech given by Padua College principal Christopher Houlihan. “Our new campus has had a fantastic start to the year, with the Tyabb students enthusiastically embracing the Paduan spirit and culture.” She said Padua’s theme for 2014 of “Sowing the Seeds of…” was especially appropriate for the Tyabb campus, which is “currently surrounded by bare land that will in time become grassed ovals and playgrounds”. Big send-off for former fire chief Brian Potter By Mike Hast THE man who blew the whistle on the CFA’s Fiskville training centre scandal was sent off with full honours last month at a private funeral service at St Jude’s in Langwarrin and a memorial service at Langwarrin fire station. Brian Potter, 70, was the CFA’s chief between 1985 and retirement in 1991. He spoke out for fair treatment of firefighters suffering from cancers related to their work, especially those who had died young after being exposed to cancer-causing chemicals at Fiskville in the 1970s and 1980s. Dozens of cancer cases were linked to the use of chemicals at the centre, and the CFA was criticised for being too slow to react to concerns. Mr Potter had a rare auto-immune

e ars ! v ha Ye nce e e W r 30 eri e xp ov f e o

disease and suffered from a series of cancers over about 20 years after working at Fiskville, north of Melbourne. In 2011 he revealed firefighters were exposed to contaminated water and chemicals that had been burnt and buried at the facility, prompting the Premier, Ted Baillieu, to set up an inquiry. After its recommendations were handed down in June 2012, the CFA altered its work practices. Mr Potter lobbied for laws to give greater access to workers’ compensation for firefighters with cancer. The changes have not yet been supported by the Victorian government but have been passed in South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. In 2012, Mr Potter was told by the CFA’s insurer that his cancers were not

related to exposure to chemicals during his 33 years with the authority. He was denied compo after earlier being told by the CFA and state government that CFA fireys would be looked after. Mr Potter joined Upper Ferntree Gully CFA as a volunteer in 1958 and became a staff member in 1964. He was involved with major fires in Gippsland in 1965, where he and his crew were burnt when they became trapped between two fire fronts. He was chief of several CFA regions during his career, and was appointed boss of training at Fiskville in 1978 and the CFA’s deputy chief officer in 1980, responsible for training, communications, fire safety, research and development, and the design and introduction of new equipment.

In 1981 he was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal. Appointed chief officer in 1985, he successfully lobbied the state government for money to buy hundreds of large pumpers and tankers as well as build new fire stations. Mr Potter introduced the concept of a single, national command and control system for fighting fires in Australia, based on what he had seen in the US. After leaving the CFA in 1991, he was a consultant for fire authorities and forestry services around Australia. Following serious illness and a stroke in 1997, he scaled back his work but undertook a range of shortterm consultancies to the CFA following major fires in 2006-07 and Black Saturday in 2009.

CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson said Mr Potter had left a lasting legacy to Victoria and further afield. “Brian remained involved in CFA as a member of Langwarrin fire brigade, and was recently awarded the National Medal, his 55-year service award, and life membership of CFA,” he said. A guard of honour flanked Centre Rd in Langwarrin when Mr Potter's coffin was carried on an old Dodge fire truck between St Jude’s and the fire station. The procession was headed by members of the CFA Motorcycle Club and the Fireman’s Prayer was read at the fire station. Mr Potter is survived by his wife Diane, four children and 10 grandchildren.

Hastings just start of city’s container problem ANALYSIS By David Harrison MASSIVELY expensive new road and rail systems will be needed to serve the expanded port of Hastings slated to handle a predicted 3 million containers each year from 2030. The cost of providing a world-standard cargo transport network would dwarf the cost of building the port. Yet little has been said about the challenge by either main political party or other affected groups. With a state election just eight months away, we might get some answers – particularly for people in areas where roads and rail lines will be most impacted. Melbourne’s existing road and especially rail links are inadequate and unsuitable for coping with more than the port authority’s prediction of 8200

container movements each day, trebling over the years as container traffic grows to 9 million annually. Even if container movements were split evenly between truck and rail – more than 4000 containers on each system – the rail line from Hastings to the city would be inadequate. The daily container rail movements would, at 150 containers per 200-metre long train, mean more than a train an hour, day and night. More and shorter trains could be run during the day to minimise night-time disturbance, but would hamper commuter traffic. Suggestions that a line could be built to Dandenong, where freight trains could then join the city rail link, are equally impractical, ameliorated only slightly by the planned removal of level crossings along the line. The Dandenong line converges with the Frankston line at Caulfield, then

would run via Malvern, Hawksburn, Toorak and so on to busy Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations. Overseas, containers moved by rail are piggybacked, or “double-stacked” for efficiency. This is impossible on Melbourne’s suburban network because of wiring, bridges and tunnels. A further huge hindrance for container trains is that, for efficiency, containers should be loaded directly on to standard gauge goods wagons. This is because some seven out of 10 containers move to and from interstate. To transfer containers from metropolitan rail to standard gauge would be inefficient and costly. To meet world’s best practice, a standard gauge line should be built to Hastings, to link with the existing east-west standard gauge line to Sydney. What route would such a link take? It has been suggested the Western Port

Highway be rebuilt to include a rail line up the centre and an additional road traffic lane in each direction, again at massive cost. To where? To the east toward Cranbourne and Berwick, then north, skirting the western side of the Dandenongs? The topography would mean enormous engineering works to achieve the gentle slopes and wide bends that trains require, especially if they are carrying double-stacked containers. So much for rail. The remaining half of the daily container movements – 4000-odd – would come and go to Hastings by truck. Even if all move on B-doubles, that’s an additional 2000plus trucks on Melbourne’s roads. But that’s not likely: many will move one container per truck. Main routes in and out of Hastings are the Western Port Highway to

Tale of woe, no biscuits and cold water COUNCIL unWATCHed

By David Harrison Special Purposes Committee meeting, 5pm, 17 March 2014. Venue: Mornington shire offices. Biscuits, no milk, no hot water. THE agenda contained several potentially interesting items – “Chairperson advice to public” and a tender relating to Mt Martha Life Saving Club. Plus a rumour had circulated the long absence from the council of Cr Frank Martin of Red Hill Ward was to be discussed. And there was Item 3 – “Confidential items: confidential report”. Was this the Frank Martin matter? It was known Cr Martin had undergone an operation and, according to Cr David Gibb, a benign lump had been removed and Cr Martin would make a full recovery. So Council Watch and friend – the entire complement of the public gallery – took our seats at the appointed hour, only to find a distinct dearth of councillors and the tea urn cold. The sole elected representative at the council

table was Tim Rodgers. The meeting, he informed us, had been adjourned (before starting time?) and councillors were meeting in a separate room. Fifty-five minutes later they appeared. First item: a motion from Cr Anne Shaw to close the meeting. Carried. We left, but could have listened at a crack in the door during a longish wait. No info was given, as a courtesy to the departing gallery, that the meeting would be closed for more than an item or two. It was the shire’s much-vaunted openness and transparency at its opaque zenith. It turned out the entire meeting was to have been confidential, despite the agenda not being so marked. After the meeting, sustainable development director Stephen Chapple waved his copy of the agenda at CW when questioned, to show it was marked “Confidential”. CW waved his

copy, clearly not similarly marked, right back. Nor were the agendas left outside the chamber for the public marked confidential. So why would a “confidential” meeting contain an item “Advice to the public”, plus another marked “confidential”? Was this item doubly confidential? Why would they discuss behind closed doors the health of Cr Martin and his request for a further 10 weeks of sick leave? Isn’t this a matter of public interest? The good folk of Red Hill Ward are entitled to know the condition of their councillor and when he is likely to return to duty. They have been effectively disenfranchised, without a word of explanation from the shire or Cr Martin. He has not been to a meeting since at least last December and is understood to be receiving further treatment for his malady. As Red Hill is a single-councillor ward, its residents and ratepayers will remain without their councillor until at least early June. Cr Gibb, one of three Seawinds Ward councillors, had recently

offered to take over Cr Martin’s ward duties but this was politely declined on the basis that Cr Gibb has a heavy work load as it is. Cr David Garnock is believed to have offered to represent the coastal villages of Red Hill Ward. As to the doubly confidential “confidential” matter, CW learned from the creatures who live behind the council wainscotting that it was which items related to the Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre (part of Cr Gibb’s heavy workload) could be released to the public and which could not. It seems the items to be released (or not, as the case may be) contain some very interesting stuff indeed. CW yearns for a copy of the doubly confidential “Confidential” material. Epilogue: CW has just noticed that, after Item 4.1, “Council communicator”, came Item 4.3, “Assembly of councillors – confidential items”. A trebly confidential “Confidential” meeting? Quick, someone call ASIO.

Princes Highway or Monash Freeway or on to Peninsula Link then EastLink tollway to various corridors in and out of Melbourne, such as Maroondah Highway. Frankston Freeway and Nepean Highway would almost certainly carry more truck traffic. The port authority has stated that container traffic through Hastings is estimated to grow from 3 million to 9 million containers by 2070. Thus all the numbers mentioned can be tripled over the years. The state government is said to have won the 2010 state election by taking seats from Labor along the Frankston line. This November it could lose vital seats – and power – along the rail and road corridors that will carry containers to and from Hastings.

Chairlift protesters blow up balloons THE first formal protest meeting against the proposed $14 million Arthurs Seat chairlift gondola since a planning application was submitted to Mornington Peninsula Shire will be held on Sunday. “Save Arthurs Seat Community Protest” has been organised by Friends of Arthurs Seat and will be held from 3-5pm at the summit. The group held two informal meetings last year before the project went public. Friends co-convenor Matt Bisogni said the group had invited Simon McKeon and Hans Brugman of chairlift proponent Arthurs Seat Skylift; MPs Martin Dixon (state) and Greg Hunt (federal); the mayor Cr Antonella Celi and Cr Graham Pittock, both of Seawinds Ward; and Richard Hudson, who operated the old chairlift. Mr Bisogni said the group would use helium balloons to “mark out the shape, size and boundaries of the proposed upper station including the height”. “This will show the extent of the building and of the proposed loss of public land,” he said. The meeting will feature entertainment by Charlie Owen and crew, Marty Nelson Williams, and other musicians. For more information, email arthursseat3936@gmail.com

Architect-designed inspiration THIS spectacular home is surrounded by all the hallmarks that make Balnarring Beach a popular little pocket on the Mornington Peninsula. At a glance the home reveals little, with a neat, rendered facade greeting you at street level. However the home majestically sprawls over four levels, perfectly utilising the slope and aspect of the 816-square metre block to hide its secrets. Panoramic views over Western Port Bay and across to Phillip Island are framed by large picture windows that serve as stunning portals to the wonders of constantly changing water and bush vistas. On the top floor is a spacious kitchen with Caesar stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and ample bench space, including a breakfast bar. Incorporated into the room is a meals and casual living area with access to one of four viewing platforms. Five bedrooms are spread across levels two and three, both with kitchenettes and powder rooms, which affords the possibility of having a premier holiday rental destination or a bed and breakfast. At ground level, along with a triple garage, is a superb wine cellar. If you have forgotten which label to serve at fine evening banquets overlooking the turquoise waters of the bay, there is an elevator to quickly and comfortably take you back up to the top floor. The combination of steel, timber, concrete and glass used throughout the home balance form and function. This is a stunning home with a raw and powerful elemental force. In a luxury market where the word unique is often overused, here it is totally justified.

WHAT’S NEW

Getting kids back to nature A FESTIVAL for children aims to tackle “nature deficit disorder”, which some experts argue links children’s declining engagement with the outdoors to myriad issues from depression to obesity. The inaugural Kids’ Adventure Festival will provide children and parents with the opportunity to experience adventure activities specifically designed for the younger generation, with walks, runs, climbs, rides and plenty more “wild” play planned

for the weekend event. Taking place at Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort on 5-6 April, the festival will feature all manner of activities aimed at re-engaging children with nature while introducing them to the huge variety of adventure pursuits that make the most of nature’s playground. Updates and news will be available on www.kidsadventurefest.com.au and on the “Mt Baw Baw Kids Adventure Festival” Facebook page.

Supplement outlet lifts the bar for gym fans By Rod Butlin of Gym Addiction GYM Addiction is the first and only dedicated gym supplement shop on the Mornington Peninsula. With the large amount of gyms now operating in the area, customers don’t need to travel to Frankston for their supplement needs. I wanted to offer to customers a “one-stop gym shop” that includes not only a vast range of supplements, but also gym wear and lifting accessories. I love talking to people about their training and listening to their personal achievements. My supplement range will suit all people from those just starting out to the experienced, hardcore trainer. The protein range includes quality Australian brands (including my own), which are a good, clean option without the fillers. I don’t just stock a great range of proteins, but also weight loss, pre-, intra- and post-workout supplements. My clothing labels include Black & Blue, Irontanks and Mega Gym at realistic prices. I also stock weight-lifting shoes, gloves, belts, wrist and

knee wraps and more. I’ve had great support from regular customers and the feedback has been very positive. A lot of customers who previously purchased their supps online are very happy to now have a shop to go to so they don’t have to pay for shipping and wait days to

receive their items. I’ll give customers a discount where possible and I’ll also be having regular sales. Parking is free and I’m located at Shop 7, 13 Eramosa Road West in Somerville, a few doors down from Subway. Open from 10am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-midday on Saturday. Hope to see you in store.

What type of levelling equipment to buy By Ron Gunn of Utow Caravans WITH the exception of some campers and some small caravans, most caravans will need to be fitted with some type of levelling equipment. They work the same as putting wheelbarrow handles on the back of your car and picking them up. The weight is transferred from the rear axle of the vehicle onto the vehicle’s front axle and to the rear onto the caravan axle/s. Vehicles with too much weight over the towball and no levelling equipment may suffer the following: lightness of steering, poor directional control, less braking efficiency, poor handling and non-aligned headlights. Front-wheel drive vehicles may suffer lack of traction. Spring bars – A strong casting is fitted to the tow hitch, round bars fit into this casting at one end and the other end onto the A-frame with either a bracket or chains. The recommended weight of the caravan is printed on the bars or the box they come in. Normally only suitable up to a tow ball weight of 130kg. Weight distribution hitch

– These bars are normally available as 250kg, 350kg and 450kg. You must know the maximum carrying capacity of your vehicle before purchasing the larger-type hitch or, for that matter, the caravan. They work the same way as the spring bars but are capable of transferring much more weight. A friction sway attachment may also be fitted to the weight distribution hitch. Remember: know your vehicle’s capacity, know your caravan weight and towball weight and stay well within both because whatever you

put into either will change the handling characteristics of your vehicle. For more information either speak to us at Utow Caravans or a qualified towbar fitter. U-Tow Caravans can service your caravan and we are now qualified to do test and tag on your electrical appliances. We also have a wide range of caravan accessories at our premises at 25 Simcock Street, Somerville. Damnation, hellfire and the internet By Stuart McCullough WOE is me. For, without really trying, I have angered the overlords of the internet and they have determined that I must be punished. In fact, they I have decided to smote me. Truth is, I have not been smote by anyone for ages and I am out of practice. Clearly, they have decided to make an example of me. There’s little I can do other than rub ashes into my skin, start dressing in sackcloth and beg for forgiveness. Even then, I suspect it may be too late. It’s always been an uneasy relationship. Truth be told, I’ve never really trusted the internet. Right from the beginning when people started to rave about an “information superhighway”, I made a secret pledge to use public transport instead. But some things are impossible to avoid. I may have succeeded in using a typewriter all the way through university, but at the point I was required to send emails, it was clear that my Remington was no longer up to the task. But although I mistrust the internet, like everyone else I am beholden to it. I spend untold hours waiting for it to start up, shut down and load so that I can get on with my day. When the internet is running slowly, I become intensely frustrated. But there’s no one to complain to. For it is as impossible to inflict a wound on the internet as it is to reason with it. So, it seems, the transformation is now complete. Having initially resisted, I am utterly at its mercy. When I arrived home on Friday night, the computer blithely informed me that I was no longer connected to the internet. It did so in sympathetic font and neutral language but the

PAGE 48

truth was far more savage – I had been banished. There were, of course, buttons to push. These make you feel as if you can fix the problem when, in truth, you have a better chance of building your own orbiting space sta-

Western Port News 25 March 2014

tion than you do fixing your computer. Still, much like Delta Goodrem, I too was born to try and duly clicked the button marked “Network diagnostics”. Computers are a funny business.

Although much of the material is ostensibly in English, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was in another language altogether. This, naturally enough, is inherently frustrating. There are references to WEPs, Routers and LANs and other creatures that may or may not live in Middle Earth. It’s almost as though through the use of a bizarre and infuriating dialect, the internet is punishing those of us who ever had the nerve to resist the shift to computers and teased those who embraced them. It is, put simply, the revenge of the nerds. But how to fix it? Luckily, I’d kept the card with my account information. Then I noted that for technical support, they offered an internet address. Given the nature of my technical needs at that moment, this was about as useful as a three-wheeled sedan. It was obvious – they were toying with me. It was then that I decided to go “old school”. Using a telephone directory, I was placed in a queue. As is the way with these things, they sought to weed out the weak by subjecting them to a horrible musical loop of Spanish flamenco guitar. I’m not sure what the piece in question is called, but if I were to hazard a guess, I’d say The Spanish Inquisition. It is music so plainly annoying that a life without the internet suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. Tantalisingly, I am told that I am only six minutes away from having my call answered. This proves misleading. When my call is answered at an undisclosed location on the Sub-continent, it’s clear that they’re expecting an idiot. “Sir, have you entered the right password?” Frankly, the “sir” is

superfluous. He then asks whether my computer is plugged in. Having answered yes to both these questions, the call centre guy is out of ideas and tells me he’ll have to get someone more senior. I am then placed back on hold where the flamenco guitar from hell is waiting. After a further 18 minutes, I am put through to someone else who asks me whether the modem is plugged in. It’s really another variant of “what kind of idiot are you?” He then tells me he’s looking at my account details and that it’s been some time since my connection has been “refreshed”. All those years of getting myself a drink from the kitchen and I never once got one for the modem. With great solemnity, he informed me that I should be turning off the modem, if not every night, then at least twice a week. I have never heard anything so stupid in all my life. I’m not sure what’s worse – that I have waited 30 minutes to be told to turn the modem off and on or that some guy on the other side of the world can monitor my computer use. Best not to think about it. Now our connection is restored but it has left me embittered. That the internet should so freely play with my emotions has left me angry and hostile. The web is, I have decided, the work of the Devil. I then test this theory by logging on to “www.satan.org” to find that someone has registered the domain name and that it is for sale. Typical. Even the dark lord of the underworld can’t compete against the turkeys responsible for the internet.

Performance FAT Tony & Co (Uncut) is the story of Tony Mokbel; how he grew entangled with the country’s most notorious underworld figures, how he built his massive fortune, and how he became a fugitive on a yacht bound for Greece, desperate to escape mounting criminal law battles. Already a key player on the Australian drug scene in his own right, Fat Tony became more deeply embroiled in the underworld as he joined forces with up-and-coming drug dealer Carl Williams. He struck an uneasy truce with the Carlton Crew, the territorial and dangerous royalty of the Melbourne underworld, even doing business from time to time with the Moran family. With his three brothers and Carl Williams, Tony expands his drug empire into a multi-million dollar industry. Featuring over 25 minutes of exclusive bonus content, including deleted scenes and the full unedited episodes which were too hot for television, Fat Tony & Co is available to own on April 16 - uncensored & uncut in Ultraviolet Blue-ray and Ultraviolet DVD. www.roadshow.com.au *** Stronger is Aleyce Simmonds’ brand new radio single, lifted from her Golden Guitar nominated album, Believe! Upbeat, powerful and lyrically defiant, Stronger has emerged as an audience favourite since the album’s release. It features a stunning vocal performance as well as Simmonds’ all-star band in full flight, highlighting the singer-songwriter’s unique ability to deliver rock-infused country. www.aleyce.com *** Let’s Get It On opens on 13 May at The Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne and celebrates the life and music of the multi-talented musician, singer

and songwriter Marvin Gaye, whose records sold in the millions and who continues to influence a legion of artists the world over. 1 April this year marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of Marvin Gaye and this two-hour narrative concert explores Marvin’s humble beginnings, his troubled relationship with his father, the women in his life, his search for meaning and the music that defined a generation. Starring Helpmann Award winning actor and singer Burt LaBonte and introducing singer, songwriter, pianist, Jude Perl, Let’s Get It On will be backed by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians and is presented by The Producers of The Man in Black – The Johnny Cash Story and At Last – The Etta James Story. Let’s Get It On features some of Marvin’s most beloved songs including I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, his stunning spiritual masterwork What’s Going On, the Grammy Award win-

ning Sexual Healing and many more of his classic hits. Marvin Gaye is acknowledged as ‘The Prince of Motown - The Prince of Soul’ with the magnitude of his influence on R&B and soul music recognised when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Daniel Andrews is a tryer but lacks the ability to inspire whereas Denis Napthine is embarrassing as premier, albeit well intentioned. Treasurer Michael O’Brien’s push for higher taxes on poker machines giving nonsense reasons (funding schools, hospitals, public transport and roads) is insulting. Then there’s the OLV (Office of Living Victoria?), the water gold mine, and electricity, producing many crooks; political, union and business. It’s a mystery. We await their false promises. *** I WAS looking at my tummy getting bigger – unstoppable - when I remembered. Eons ago my mates and I went to the St Kilda sea baths, for men only, mostly nude men, all shapes and sizes. Our particular fascination was with the older men with elephantine tummies. We wondered how long ago they had set eyes on their miniature tiddles, even allowing for mirrors and how they felt about it? I’m not quite to that stage yet but after all those years the answer has dawned. Size is unimportant. *** ROSS Gittins, senior columnist for The Age newspaper writes on compulsory superannuation exposing us to the predatory financial services industry and likewise union involvement. About a year too late Ross, but nice to know you read my column… ***

ON the flight home from lovable Sydney recently I had a delightful young lady sitting next to me. Svetlana, a program manager at the Georges River Combined Council Committee. On such a short flight, tradition has it that you say nothing and assume the attitude of the other passengers: look important, almost disdainful, and certainly never start a conversation with anyone, let alone a charming young female. Lucky me, for Svetlana spoke first, making the 75-minute journey go in a flash. Unsure as to her passion for the Georges River, but no matter. So rare, so nice. *** TONY has promised to leave penalty rates alone during his first term of government. Remember this before the next federal election. In the meantime, I suggest he cut out rorts for high income earners, including access to family tax benefits, tax breaks on superannuation, negative gearing and the use of trusts to avoid tax. Maybe increase the mining tax? I’m dreaming. *** NOTED a US study on the personality (disorders?) of coffee drinkers. Cappuccino drinkers: obsessive and controlling. Latte types: go out of their way to please others, somewhat neurotic. Instant: too laid back, procrastinators. Black: no-nonsense, straightforward, intelligent, moody. We never seem to tire of rubbish. I drink black coffee,

RECORD Store Day Australia, celebrating the local music outlet, returns for the sixth year on Saturday 19 April (Easter Saturday) across Australia. This is an important day for the music industry as it reiterates the importance of the traditional music outlet as one of the major avenues for the public to discover the many genres of music releases each year. The public still love to browse and buy a physical product as seen by the rise in vinyl purchases over the past 12 months. Record Store Day last year saw one of the largest national sales figures for the physical product since the special day began in Australia six years ago with store reporting that it was better than Christmas and their biggest Saturday since the store began 25 years before. In store appearances, signings, special promotions, special releases were overwhelming endorsed by the music loving fans. Record Store Day Australia is run by The Australian Music Retailers Association (AMRA) and has the unqualified support of record companies and Australian music icons who know the importance of supporting all specialist music stores. www.recordstoreday.com.au

mitments from Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. After making the science fiction film THX 1138 in 1971 and the rites of passage movie American Graffiti in 1973, writer/director George Lucas spent four years developing and working on this galactic fantasy inspired by the Flash Gordon cartoon strip. Stars Wars (1977) cost $8 million and was made in the UK with little-known Americans in the leading roles, supported by British actors. Cast included Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Alec Guiness and David Prowse. Two sequels (The Empire Strikes Back 1980, Return of the Jedi 1983) and three prequels (The Phantom Menace 1999, Attack of the Clones 2002, Revenge of the Sith 2005) have generated billions of dollars’ worth of merchandising sales. ***

*** DISNEY and Lucas Film announced today that principal photography is set to begin Star Wars: Episode VII in May, just in time to get the hugely anticipated next instalment in the storied franchise ready for its 18 December 2015 release date. The filmmakers also revealed that the new movie, the first of three planned sequels, will pick up 30 years after Return of the Jedi (aka Episode VI) left off. And now that Episode VII production has a start date all it needs are some stars. So far it has one person in talks, Adam Driver, and reported com-

A Grain of Salt MALCOLM Fraser famously said: “Life wasn’t meant to be easy”. As the results came through on the elections in South Australia and Tasmania on the back of a Collingwood (Nathan) disaster and another cigarette price increase and the water (con) bill, I’m in mourning. The Herald Sun is a cat with two bowls of cream. Worse still, I reached the age of 78 last Saturday. Woe is me. *** MATTHEW McConaughey thanked God at the Academy Awards. Ditto others saving whales, gay marriages, mums and dads. If God motivates Matty so be it, but could not help wondering why God helped someone so obviously not in need, as against millions dying of starvation or stuck in refugee camps overseas. Did Queen Cate’s speech meet with our approval? No mention of God. In Sin City (Sydney) they call her “Our Cate”? One also wonders if our chief adviser on matters of living within our means (Gina Rinehart) is also thanking God. No sarcasm intended, merely pondering. *** WITH the current concentration on Tony and Joe, let us not forget Victoria. whereas I suspect Andrew Bolt would be a 6-a-day cappuccino man. *** YOU’VE lost your glasses, looked everywhere, cannot find; items so important you have two of them. Do not waste your time searching, get the second pair. You either find them without thinking or suddenly you will remember where you put them, or they will appear on your bed or your kitchen bench, unobtrusive, hiding. I lost my favourite cap; checked all my visits; nothing forthcoming. Weeks later I put my second favourite cap on top of the printer; accidentally knocked and it fell down the side. I retrieved it, thought about it, wondered? Bingo! Save your memory buds and worry for the big things, big visuals, like walking into the kitchen and wondering why; spotting the coffee jar and more. Bingo! Make your coffee. Also, have a read of the obituaries in The Age newspaper, particularly those born before 1930. Feel better now? *** THE whole world plays the fool; we have a new theatre, a new scene, a new Comedy of Errors, a new company of actors. We change language, habits, laws, customs, manners, but not vices, not the symptoms of folly and madness, they remain the same and the play never finishes. *** I’M rarely hungry. I do all the recommended: vegetables, green tea, fruits, meat and fish but I’m warning those “advisers” now, if I find out it was all nonsense when I arrive up there I’m coming back to haunt you. Why up, rather than down? We’ve all done dreadful things. Put a ban on my type and heaven would be deserted. Just God, Andrew Bolt, Julie Bishop, Tony and Matthew McConaughey. *** I HEAR it on the wireless: “Riverview - a gated community nestled on the Maribyrnong River”. An exciting prospect. Ratio: females to men? Can’t wait...If you honestly believe you need a financial adviser then I suggest you don’t need one...Is your child well rounded, resilient and self-aware? WESTERN PORT

scoreboard Doggies hang on in thriller PROVINCIAL By IT Gully MORNINGTON held on to win a thrilling MPCA Provincial grand final on Saturday against Sorrento. After an enthralling first two days last weekend, it was only fitting this premiership contest went down to the very last over. There is always a hero in a premiership win and for Mornington it was opener Anthony Gapes, who faced 133 overs (70 in the first innings and 63 in the second) without giving away his wicket. The way the match was played, it was never about the runs Gapes made

in the match, it was always about the steely determination and mental toughness he had to display to get his side across the line. With wickets falling around him in the first innings, all he had to do was stay out there and ensure that his side scored just one more run than the opposition. The Dogs made 133, chasing 131. Luke Harper was also significant in the first innings with 21 runs batting at number 10. At the end of play last Sunday, Doggies opening quick Michael Heib had snared seven wickets and the Sharks were in massive trouble at stumps at 9/100-odd. However, Ryan O’Connor and A J

King put on more than 50 for the last wicket on Saturday, giving Sorrento a chance to win the match. Mornington was set 158 runs to win or needed to survive the last 63 overs of the match. The game was always going down to the wire. Mornington looked gone early as the Sorrento opening bowlers got their side away to a flyer. The Dogs lost Rob Hearn, Ben Clements and Matt Foon early and were 3/30 at one stage. The momentum was certainly with the Sharks. However, Gapes was still at the crease and was solid against every

bowler. He had plenty of handy bats to come in and support him all the way down the order and they all played their roles. With six overs remaining in the day, Sorrento needed three wickets. Mornington was too far away from the 156-run total, so it was survival to the end. They held on, crowned the best team in the MPCA. For Sorrento, it was another grim day ;yet another grand final loss. It was compounded by the fact that many believe the era at Sorrento has gone. Ryan and Liam O’Connor are rumoured to be going to Ballam Park

next season, while A J and Chris King are linked to another Provincial Division club used to winning flags. Anthony Blackwell, many believe, has played his last game of top level cricket and they say there’s no certainty surrounding the future of Leigh Poholke or Nick Jewell at Sorrento. For Mornington, things look bright. Despite Clements’ unbelievable season, there doesn’t seem to be any plans for him to go back to Frankston Peninsula. The Dogs have a wonderful blend of youth and experience and one senses they will enjoy a little dynasty if they stick together.

Prosser guides Pines to premiership DISTRICT By IT Gully PINES assistant coach Jake Prosser guided his side to victory against Delacombe Park in the District grand final on Saturday at Alexandra Park. Prosser’s match-winning 71 runs was made with grit, maturity, determination, patience and class, and rightfully he was the player who hit the winning runs. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed by his coach Ricky Ramsdale, who paid tribute to his right-hand man. “He had some demons about Delacombe [two ducks] coming into bat today but he was sensational and showed great maturity,” Ramsdale said. Ramsdale was also pleased his strike bowler Brett Remy will play on next season. “Hopefully ‘Rem’ you will give us one more year.” Remy is a competitive beast and is sure to help his side in the top grade, albeit for one season perhaps. Pines won the premiership two seasons ago in Sub-district and now will play in Provincial next season after Saturday’s feat. It was a superb effort by the Piners, who had seven players under the age of 22 in their line-up. Set 156 for victory off the final 63 overs of the match, Prosser strode to the crease with his side in big trouble, two wickets down. Delacombe Park was on top early with Brett Chard removing both openers before Prosser and Jeremy Weare came together at the crease. The two steadied the ship before Weare was given out caught behind in the last over before tea. The momentum of the match shifted often throughout Pines’ innings, however, one sensed that they had the depth of batting to be able to see out the 63 overs. While players fell around him, Prosser continued to look as solid as a rock, dead-batting the good balls and looking to score off anything loose down leg side or short. Prosser’s innings was chanceless until the end, when he hooked a bouncer to a fielder on the fence, only to have it sail over his head for four. At the 25 to 40 over mark, it appeared Pines was just going to bat

PAGE 54

out the overs. However, when Parkers’ spinners Varun Singh and Nick Christides came on, they went for 23 runs in three overs and the 156-run target looked achievable. Prosser could see the finish line and with the more than handy Nick Wilcox and Pat Jackson batting with him, decided to go for the outright

Western Port News 25 March 2014

win. Delacombe seemed to lack any spark in the field other than Chard (4/17) playing up to the crowd and getting under the skin of the batsmen. Simon Dignan bowled well and was rewarded with a couple of wickets. The lack of use of Shane Deal, who bowled Prosser out three times in previous meetings this year, was odd

and he was only used for six overs. He finished with 0/8. His underuse was mind-blowing. Earlier in the match, Pines opening bowler Brett Remy finished with eight wickets for the match, snaring five in the first innings to really set up the win. He took three in the second innings. Coach Ricky Ramsdale also picked

up eight wickets in the match, three in the first innings and five in the second. With an ageing list, the Parkers may not get another opportunity as good as this one to grab a premiership. Pines, however, has plenty to look forward to in the top grade next season.

Hillmen Rumour Jewell is snag a flag heading to Rosebud SUB-DISTRICT

By IT Gully YEARS of heartache were all forgotten for Red Hill on Saturday when they were presented with the MPCA Sub-district premiership. After losing the past two grand finals, Red Hill appeared to be in its best-ever position to win the premiership, heading into day three. Rheede Hopgood had made 64, Ken Sullivan 51 and Simon Dart had hit his third century in as many matches to help Red Hill to a total of 277 last weekend. More importantly, the Hillmen batted their entire 110 overs. Having to face the last 41 overs on the second day, the Buds looked gone at stumps. Greg McCann (15), Mathew Maher (7), Danny Heylbut (0) and Darren Kerr (0) were all back in the sheds. The only light at the end of the tunnel was the fact there was some experience to come and Brad Glenn (32) was unbeaten overnight. The Hillmen were obviously a bowler down with Glenn Collett not playing, although Lincoln Toy, Ross Corfield and Jamie McCall headlined a more than reasonable attack. At the end of the first weekend, Toy and Corfield had a couple of wickets each and the Buds were reeling at 5/101. However, rather than roll over and go down without a whimper, Rosebud had a crack on the third day. Although the Buds never looked like tracking down the 278 for victory, they were able to bat for 100 overs and make the Hillmen earn their victory. The Buds were eventually bowled out for 221, a sensational performance given their poor start.

SPORTS TALK THERE were plenty of rumours doing the rounds across the three MPCA grand finals on Saturday. Sorrento was the club that appeared to be the biggest talking point. The rumours went like this. Ryan and Liam O’Connor to join Ballam Park in Sub-district ranks next season. Anthony Blackwell retired. Leigh Poholke weighing up his options and unlikely to stay. A J King and brother Chris King considering a deal with another Provincial club that is no stranger to success. The big talk, though, surrounded Nick Jewell, who was said to be considering a deal with Rosebud. Hard to see the former star Victorian playing Sub-district cricket. There is a nice fairytale of him playing cricket and coaching football at the same club. There is also talk that Long Island’s Andrew Tweddle and Justin Brideman are heading back to Ballam Park also. As former juniors with Karingal, they would net zero points. There was another one that had Red Hill opening bowler Lincoln Toy heading to Tootgarook next season. Apparently he told the club immediately after the premiership win. Boneo’s Leigh Lowry has apparently accepted a role at Somerville. Langwarrin is close to snaring a left-arm

quick from the Cardinia competition while Dwayne Doig knocked back big offers to stay a Kanga for the next two seasons. *** IN footy news, we’re just two weeks away from round one and practice matches are in full swing. With cricket season now officially finished, sides will be just about loading up their lists in the final practice matches this weekend. Pines’ Brendan Neville, who has been a significant player for the red and green, has applied to play in the Ellinbank league. Karingal has lost another couple in Jim Martinson to the Southern Football League and Rhys Bartlett-Quinn to Somerville while Dylan Emmons has left Mt Eliza to play in the VAFA. In good news for Tyabb, there has been a number of clearances come in for the Yabbies. No notable names but good players all the same. Red Hill has lost Joe Krieger to the Southern Football League, a big blow for the Hillmen, who lack height this season. Rosebud has finally put a clearance in for Sorrento’s Daniel Hickey. Hickey crossed to the Buds prior to Christmas. The other interesting one is Jae Williams returning to Dromana from Rosebud. Williams caused some issues when he left Dromana last season. However, he has decided to head back to his family’s club.
