A message from the President of Canadian Western AgribItion On behalf of the Canadian Western Agribition Board of Directors it is my privilege to welcome you to Canadian Western Agribition. As my first year as President I am very humbled and honored to represent such a prestigious community event. Agribition is a multifaceted world-class trade, education and entertainment attraction with something for everyone. Agribition is, and always will be, the best beef show on the continent and the largest livestock show in Canada. Agribition remains focused on marketing Canada’s agriculture products to the world. We are continuing to expand our offering to include grain, agri-business and cultural experiences. For me, Agribition has always been about family; the family of exhibitors, the family of volunteers and the family of staff. A very special, “Thank You” needs to go out to these three groups. Without their dedication and commitment, Canadian Western Agribition would not be the world-class event Regina has come to expect. We have lots of exciting new events and activities that are sure to please young and old alike. We hope you enjoy the show. See you at the show! Reed Andrew, President of Canadian Western Agribition

t’s finally here! 200 staff and 400 volunteers have been preparing for the 43rd edition of Canadian Western Agribition for the entire year. We have a strong volunteer base that have worked hard to assemble over 90 individual events throughout six days of Agribition. Agribition is one of Regina’s signature events, and we continue to grow and appeal to a broader audience with something for everyone. The show has many improvements and additions this year. Many of these additions are featured throughout this show guide. I encourage you to read forward and see how we have managed to raise the bar on everything from cattle to music to education. The real story this year is infrastructure. For many who frequent our trade show and take advantage of the Machinery Mall or do some of their Christmas shopping in the Everyday Living Marketplace, the infrastructure is first class. The livestock facilities, however, do not meet the expectations of a world class event. We have spent the last year working on a long-term solution to address these tired assets, and some great progress is being made. This year close to $1.1 million dollars has been put into upgrades to improve the West side assets. A complete roof repair of the Canada Centre was completed including lighting upgrades. The Stockman’s Arena received a new floor, and the newly named Stock Exchange has upgraded heating and lights to accommodate the launch of The Yards at Agribition. We hope these capital improvements will go a long way to improving the visitor and exhibitor experience at the show as well as showing our international guests we are the best beef show in North America. Even though we have made some progress, more work is being done on a long-term solution to the infrastructure. The show is currently finalizing the business plan, in conjunction with the City of Regina, to develop a permanent solution to the ailing buildings on Barn Road. Replacing this infrastructure is a must for the show to be successful. Agribition visitors will also see construction starting on the new Football Stadium on the South East corner of the grounds. The largest impact on our show will be the loss of usable parking space as a result of this massive construction project. We are working on solutions to help with this issue including shuttle bus programs and off-site parking solutions for exhibitors and visitors. The show continues to see growth in livestock, trade show, and entertainment for the whole family. We are proud of the enhancements we have made at this year’s show and welcome you to experience all Agribition offers. Welcome to the show!

Proud to be
Canadian Western Agribition – Back to Regina’s Agriculture Roots
E
ver wonder how an event built on rural pride can survive in a big urban centre like Regina? It’s easy. Build an experience based on tradition, prestige, and inclusiveness; wrap it in a bow and do it every year for 43 years. Sprinkle in 5,000 kids, international visitors from over 60 countries, add a touch of cow, a pinch of horse, and blend in the biggest consumer tradeshow one month before Christmas and you have Canadian Western Agribition. There is something about agriculture that takes us back to a simpler time. One has to look hard to find a resident from Saskatchewan who doesn’t have a connection with rural life. Many may reminisce about weekends at their grandparents running in the hay loft, feeding the cows, or sitting on an open station tractor. The magic behind Agribition is the connection with our inner soul’s need to feel part of something meaningful, innocent, and noble. Agribition’s value can be measured
10
Canadian Western Agribition 2013 Official Show Guide
in terms of economic impact. 125,000 visitors have an economic impact just shy of $40 million annually on the community. This is like having a Grey Cup in town every single year. Most Regina residents know the store shelves will be left bare when Agribition wraps up and the trailers and the trucks head back to their respective farms and ranches for the long winter. The economics are simple. This big event equals big bucks for local business owners. “We look forward to showcasing our city to the many visitors from across Canada and around the world who will attend Agribition. This week is always a highlight for our city as we celebrate our agricultural roots,” said Michael Fougere, Mayor of Regina. It’s not all about the money. Like a big oak tree, the roots of the show are deep and stem right back to the simplest of foundations. The social and cultural benefits of the show make it part of Regina’s psyche. “Agribition is about families and family values. I love to see smil-
ing kids interacting with the animals.” said Robert Stroeder, General Manager of Denny’s Restaurant in Regina. “Where else can city folk get a chance to experience agriculture in such an inviting setting?” All of us are social, by nature. Naturally, we gravitate to activities and places that create a sense of belonging. The ‘Legends of the Swamp’, six nights of rodeo action, or beers in the Bud Light Loading Chute have a few things in common – smiling faces, handshakes, and outlandish tales of heroism echo through the venues creating a cascade of new memories routed in the traditions of Regina’s biggest social event of the year. If you haven’t already connected the dots, Agribition is about culture. Regina was founded on agriculture, and although Regina is growing beyond its cultural roots as it expands into a booming metropolis, the link of six days of the unique sights and sounds of Agribition pulls Regina back to simpler time when families worked and played together.

Ride ’em
New in 2013! Ride ’em Cowboy is a new event at Agribition. Come watch Saskatchewan’s top trainers, Dale Clearwater of Hanley SK, and Cain Quam of Kendal, SK work two young horses simultaneously in their respective round pens as they take horses from wild bronc to domestic companion. “Ride ‘em Cowboy will provide guests the opportunity to witness both Dale and Cain’s horsemanship expertise as they deal with the unpredictability of working with horses that have never been ridden before.” said Courtney MacDougall, Equine Team Leader and Canadian Western Agribition Board of Director. Round pen work takes place Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday at 12:00 p.m. in the Brandt Centre for all to see. The trainers will provide insight and explanation on their technique and strategy for managing these young animals. On Friday these two newly domesticated animals will ride a pre-determined pattern and be judged on their overall performance. The colts will later be sold at auction during the Ranch Horse Sale on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Brandt Centre.
Dale Clearwater Dale is no stranger to Agribition. Throughout the years Dale has competed in many different arenas including Ranch Horse competitions, Cutting, Reined Cow Horse, and now colt starting challenges. He loves showing horses, and has had many championships both here in Canada as well as south of the line. 2011 was a record year for Dale placing him in the top 30 money earning trainers in the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Dale feels a person never stops learning, and is always asking advice from fellow trainers, looking for new tips and tricks to try in his program.
Cain Quam Cain is a 4th generation horse trainer, born in Southern Saskatchewan. He has coached several non-pros, youth and amateur riders to various titles. He is also a veteran clinician of 20 years having taught approximately 200 clinics on subjects such as colt starting, horsemanship, cutting, ranch roping and cowboy mounted shooting. Cains horsemanship skills have been showcased as the feature clinician at prestigious events such as Canadian Western Agribition, Farmfair International, and the World’s Largest County Fair in Clay County, Iowa.

Returns to Agribition 2013 Tuesday, November 12
C
anadian Western Agribition continues to expand its profile as a multi-faceted marketplace for all aspects of the agricultural industry. To this end, last year Agribition announced the launch of its new Grain Expo. The 2012 Grain Expo exceeded organizers expectations with over 500 grain producers taking part in the inaugural event. The success of the conference can be attributed to the post-harvest timing of the event and the pragmatic presentations of the powerful line-up of speakers. The 2013 Grain Expo takes place November 12 and 13 in the Queensbury Salon. Organizers have allocated more space this year in anticipation of an even bigger audience for the conference. This year’s conference will feature an expanded trade show component targeting grain-specific products and services. “Agribition has grown beyond just cattle.” said Reed Andrew, President of Canadian Western Agribition. “The success of last year’s Grain Expo speaks to the show’s ability to deliver a quality event to a targeted group of sophisticated grain producers. It’s only going to get bigger.” This year’s Grain Expo speaker topics include: Herbicide Resistance Management, Applying Science to Improve Canola Yields, and Grain Marketing Updates. “Canadian Western Agribition takes place right after harvest. It’s the perfect place for the industry to compare notes on last year’s crop and start making decisions on next year’s purchases.” said Kirby Engele, Operations Manager at Young’s Equipment. irst Nations activities have been on the rise at Canadian Western Agribition the last few years. Earlier this year Agribition announced the launch of a new conference, the Canadian Western Agribition Indigenous Agriculture Summit. This two-day conference is a platform to showcase Indigenous agriculture practices throughout North America. The conference will take place on November 12 and 13 at the Ramada Hotel in Regina. The conference will feature topics and discussion focused on individual and organization’s success stories in agriculture and opportunities that exist in the agri-food sector. Each topic will be centrally themed around a First Nations based program or activity related to agriculture. “The Indigenous Agriculture Summit will address a need for Indigenous communities to come together and benefit from shared learnings.” said Elmer Eashappie, Committee Chair and Canadian Western Agribition Director. Guest speakers and topics will range from land use capacity and resource management techniques used across Saskatchewan by First Nations groups, to a variety of U.S. based perspectives including Florida’s Seminole Tribe’s beef production model. Success stories shared at the conference will include Ochapowace First Nations 9,000 acre grain farm, Black Bear Orchards: Traditional Food to Contemporary Business, and the work done by the First Nations Agriculture Association of British Columbia. “The Indigenous Agriculture Summit is the first conference of its kind in Canada.” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Canadian Western Agribition. “This event compliments Agribition’s programming, and strengthens Regina profile as an agriculture center of excellence.”

anadian Western Agribition is a great place for all ages to come and learn about agriculture in a fun, interactive way. The Family Ag Pavilion sponsored by Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is located in The Co-operators Centre. Families can see and learn about their favorite farm animals including cows, alpacas, piglets and chickens. Come watch a chick hatch and get up close and personal with the animals being displayed. The pavilion is designed to educate families about where the food on their table comes from. This year the pavilion will again offer hands-on activities for families as well as greater opportunity to become more involved in the learning process. Best of all – it’s fun! “The displays continue to bring agriculture education to the table in an interactive, fun way. This year we have some brand-new displays for people to visit.” said Carla Schmitt, Education Team Leader and Canadian Western Agribition Board of Director. Some exciting displays that will be featured at the Family Ag Pavilion are:
Agrium Seed Survivor
A new display featuring fun interactive video games on how to grow healthy plants. There will be eight interactive stations featuring multi-media and virtual reality games and activities designed to teach youth the importance of agriculture. Special focus will be placed on the importance of plants. Children who visit the display can plant a sunflower seed to take home, care for, and watch grow!
Saskatchewan Pork
Piglets!!! Agribition is excited to welcome Sask Pork as a new exhibitor to the pavilion this year. Visitors will learn about pig growth stages and the pork industry’s contribution to Saskatchewan agriculture and the local economy.
Western College of Veterinary Medicine
A larger display this year for the Veterinarians and vet students who will be talking to families about animals and animal health. This exhibit features a surgery station where kids can “scrub in” for surgery by donning a surgical gown, mask, gloves and bonnet. Kids can see a variety of interesting x-rays and view animal anatomy pieces.
Tractors
New to the pavilion this year – farm equipment! Families will have an opportunity to learn the role of equipment that is used on the farm.
The Saskatchewan Arts Board presents Ag Art
Located on the second floor of The Co-operators Centre, overlooking the Family Ag Pavilion In Life on the Farm, visual artist Brendan Schick will guide visitors in creating animals, buildings, fences, and landscape using collage techniques, painting, and stencil cutouts to create a collaborative sculpture depicting a Saskatchewan farm scene. It is a chance for everyone to reflect on what they’ve learned from their visit to the Canadian Western Agribition. The Family Ag Pavilion is open Monday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A family trip to Agribition isn’t complete without seeing a Milking Demonstration. This exhibit is located in Barn 4 and features daily demonstrations Monday at 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., Tuesday-Friday at 10:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. and Saturday at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Modern Day
Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in Canada! The sport started in Arizona in the 1990’s and is steadily becoming a popular equine sport.
“W
e travel all around the world looking for entertaining events combining athletes and animals.” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Canadian Western Agribition. “We have brought a real crowd pleaser back with us this time!” Cowboy Mounted Shooting is similar to barrel racing but with guns. Competitors must ride their horses through a pattern while using two single action revolvers to shoot at 10 target balloons, firing all along the way. Competitors are given a five second penalty for every balloon they miss. The fastest competitor wins! “Nothing could be more exciting than the speed of barrel racing with a taste of the wild west.” said Cain Quam, cowboy competitor. “Six guns blazing at interactive targets. From a spectators or a competitor’s standpoint, this truly is the most exciting equine sport on the planet!” Competitors use authentic .45 single-action revolvers, which are modeled after the kind used in the late 1800’s. Since the revolvers are single-action, the rider must cock the gun each time they wish to fire. The revolvers are loaded with blank rounds that contain coarse black gun powder. This powder is so coarse that it can pop a balloon up to 15 feet away. Cowboy Mounted Shooting, sponsored by Cabela’s will take place on November 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Brandt Centre. This high-speed, timed, spectator sport is guaranteed to entertain people of all ages!

Canadian Western Agribition Focuses on Commercial Cattle
T
he Commercial Cattle Barn at Canadian Western Agribition has always been, and will continue to be, a great place to catch up with a neighbor, spill a story or two, and pick from the best commercial cattle the industry has to offer. The Commercial Cattle Barn has a new name… The ‘Stock Exchange’ is more than just a name, it’s a change of attitude, appearance, and programming. “Commercial cattle are the lifeblood of the cattle industry,” notes Reed Andrew, President of Canadian Western Agribition. “We want to create an environment that brings in more cattle, people, and commerce.” The newly designed Stock Exchange will have five main components:
Bred Females - This has been the backbone of the program for years. Exhibitors have the opportunity to tap into Agribition’s extensive audience and take advantage of the sale of all sales. This program will set the market price for the fall, and it will be hard to beat.
Replacement Heifers - Whether you are a buyer or seller, this is your chance to see what’s in the pipeline for the next generation of females. An insight into the future of the market, this platform can be used by exhibitors to expand their marketing options. Feeder Steers - If you want to show off your cross-breeding
program, or you simply want to see what cross-bred opportunities exist, this competition and sale is the perfect place to show the packers and feedlots, ‘there’s more where these came from’.
Bull Pen Alley - A bull pen competition with a modern twist. These bulls are shown in pens of three with a ranch raised feel. Expanded exhibitor exposure and buyer access make this an ideal area to pick a string of herd sires. Capped off with an all breed champion pen, this new format is an ideal expo of talented genetics. The Yards - This brand new feature located in the Stock Exchange features 20x20 pens where exhibitors can feature any part of their breeding program. Expect to see mature herd sires, displays, hosting areas, and much more. There are no rules, no competitions, just good people with good working cattle. It is by no accident, Canadian Western Agribition took on the challenge to grow the commercial cattle presence at the show; Agribition wanted to drive more cattle and more people through the former Commercial Cattle Barn. Not only has the game changed, so have the rules. Be sure to visit The Yards Thursday-Saturday in the Stock Exchange. The Commercial Cattle Show sponsored by Saskatchewan Credit Unions and Zoetis will take place on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and the sale on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Bull Pen Alley’s People Choice will take place on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and the show will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
Bull Pen Alley People’s Choice Award
On Friday afternoon the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association will be holding a People’s Choice Jackpot in Bull Pen Alley. Come vote for your favourite Bull Pen Alley exhibitor!

Balsamic Honey Chicken Wings Serves: 6
Ingredients 24 chicken wings, raw 24 2 Tbsp low-sodium soy sauce (30 mL) 3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (45 mL) ½ cup honey (125 mL) 2 Tbsp lime juice, fresh (30 mL) ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, ground (.6 mL) ¼ tsp allspice, ground (.6 mL) 1 cup green onions, finely-sliced (250 mL) 2 Tbsp sesame seeds (30 mL)
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). 2. Cut off and discard wing tips, as they tend to burn and don’t have much meat. Cut wings into two by separating at the joint. 3. Mix together soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, honey, fresh squeezed lime juice, cayenne and allspice in a large bowl. Place wings in bowl and toss to evenly coat wings. 4. Spray a baking pan with vegetable oil spray and spread
wings out on tray. Reserve marinade for basting. Roast wings until skin is crispy and brown for about 50 minutes or until cooked through. Baste after 10 minutes and again two more times with reserved sauce using it all up. Remove from oven. 5. Place on serving platter and garnish with sliced green onions and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Recipe Courtesy of Chicken Farmers of Canada

Pavilion I
n Western Canada, there are no traditions more ancient than those of the First Nations. Growing from those roots, Canadian Western Agribition is pleased to once again present the First Nations Pavilion. Established in 2011, the pavilion located in The Co-operators Centre, was the brainchild of Agribition Board of Director, Elmer Eashappie, a proud member of the Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation. The popularity of the First Nations Pavilion has quickly turned it to a new tradition at Agribition. “The pavilion fits well with the education and community aspects of our show. It’s something all visitors will find interesting.” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Canadian Western Agribition. “There is a growing desire in Saskatchewan to share and appreciate our province’s First Nations heritage. Agribition is proud to help spread cultural awareness and understanding.” Exhibitors at the pavilion include the First Nation University of Canada, University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan, Twisted Wire Ranch - Cultural Horse Program, Regina 2014 North American Indigenous Games, Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Indian Culture Center, and the File Hills Tribal Council.
The pavilion, which covers half a hockey arena, features a variety of informative, artistic and interactive displays, including: ■ World-class drummers and champion dancers ■ Archery and lacrosse demonstration ■ Story telling ■ Contemporary and traditional craft makers including painting and bead work ■ Elder stations where Elders will share traditional stories about the importance of animals ■ Language stations Guests can expect the pavilion to continue to grow over the next few years. Eashappie has long sought to build a stronger international Indigenous gathering place at Agribition, and promises big things in the future. “The First Nations Pavilion has brought much enjoyment to visitors over the past couple years.” said Eashappie. “Moving into the future our goal is to create a more comprehensive pavilion that includes Indigenous Tribes from the four-corners of North America.” The First Nations Pavilion is open Monday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Meets Hi-Tech – it’s the best of both worlds at a Ritchie Bros. auction. By: Andrew Engelhardt
A
uctions have been a popular method of buying and selling everything from wine and art to equipment and livestock for centuries. It’s easy to see why: buyers get the chance to compete and set market pricing, and everyone gets to enjoy the show. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers—host of the annual Winners Circle Auctioneer Competition at Agribition—has been at the forefront of the equipment auction business for more than fifty years selling farming, construction, transportation and other types of equipment and trucks. According to Jordan Clarke, Ritchie Bros.’ Saskatoon-based Regional Sales Manager, “People love auctions. They’re exciting, competitive, and the chance to get a good deal keeps buyers coming back. And the whole atmosphere – the auctioneer’s chant, the crowd – creates momentum that gets good returns for sellers in the end.” Ritchie Bros. recognizes that the traditional live auction will always draw crowds, and that technology can be used effectively to
make it easier and more convenient for buyers to participate. In 2002, Ritchie Bros. pioneered technology that allows people to bid online in real time as the auction is happening. Today the average Ritchie Bros auction attracts 1,760 bidders, with 60% participating online. “The internet has dramatically changed the auction business in that it’s brought the market right to our customers’ offices and kitchen tables. It gives buyers access to equipment they couldn’t get before, and sellers benefit from more out-of-region bidders competing for their equipment, which results in better returns.” Don’t miss the Winners Circle Auctioneer Competition presented by Ritchie Bros. on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chevrolet GMC Stadium. Matt Hostter of Chippewa, Pennsylvania, Ryan Hurlburt of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Tyler Runge of Columbus, Nebraska will compete for the coveted Canadian Western Agribition Auctioneer Championship. This year proceeds from the charity items will go to support STARS Air Ambulance.
MNP is proud to support Agribition. Come visit us at the Winners Circle.
FARM&FAMILY Get succession planning that works for both. Passing your farm business to the next generation can seem a daunting task. But as easy as it is to put off, the time may be right for you and your family to begin the process.

Be an AGvocate Speak up, speak positively Those of us involved in agriculture love what we do and we want the best for our industry. We know why agriculture is important to Canada and the world, and that it provides a lifestyle that can’t be beat. But we tend to be a humble group, so others may not hear this message. We need to remember: image matters. What we say about agriculture influences how people view our industry. Share your passion and optimism for agriculture and let it shine through everything you say and do – being an agvocate is that easy. Agvocates look for opportunities to talk about what’s going well in agriculture. They fill in information gaps, help dispel myths and learn more about the industry. Image is critical to our future, and fortunately we have a very positive story that we can tell. So let’s tell it.
• Get young people excited. There are jobs – great jobs. There’s farming of course, but many more options from science and sales to processing and manufacturing. • Speak positively. Investment tends to flow to progressive industries that have a promising future. • Inform consumers we’re capable business managers and stewards of the land, driven to produce safe, high quality food using sustainable methods. Our image matters – in fact, it has never mattered more. Tell the world why you love agriculture and what the industry means to you. We’re counting on you to tell the real, positive story of Canadian agriculture.

Grades 4 and 5 students from Delisle Elementary School walk out of a 200 acre wheat field being harvested for Delisle Crops for Community, Sept. 10. Students observed a part of the crop, which had no fertilizer applied, to see the effects and how the yield compares. The project is a fundraiser for recreation facility upgrades in Delisle. The town owns the land and agreed to let a group of volunteers farm it for the next four years with all proceeds being turned back to the community. ‘Game changing’ breeding nears Crop breeding’s holy grail | Pollination would no longer be required in seed production BY SEAN PRATT SASKATOON NEWSROOM
Scientists are making strides on the “holy grail” of crop breeding and canola is the crop where the new technology is the most advanced. “This would be the single biggest revolutionary change created by biotechnology for crops,” said Paul Arni-
son, president of Botanical Alternatives Inc., an agricultural biotechnology consulting firm. The technology centres on a process known as apomixis, where the female reproductive system of certain plants occasionally produces seed without pollination. Scientists have known about the process since the dawn of crop breed-
ing but they haven’t been able to get a handle on it until recently, said Wilf Keller, president of Ag-West Bio Inc. “It has been too hard to manage and understand but now with whole genomic sequencing we can maybe get at those complex genes that trigger the process,” he said. “It could revolutionize the way we develop hybrid vigour.”
That’s because pollination would no longer be required in the seed production process. Arnison said Tim Sharbel, a Canadian researcher working for a German plant genetics company, has made huge strides in understanding how the apomixtic process works in canola. SEE ‘GAME CHANGING’, PAGE 2
