Midge tolerant wheat protects your crop against devastating pest damage, but it’s up to you to protect the technology. The Stewardship Agreement limits the use of farm-saved seed to one generation past Certified seed. It’s a simple step that keeps the interspersed refuge system at the proper level, preventing build-up of resistant midge.Without the refuge, we risk losing the one and only tolerant gene. There is no plan B. Protect this important tool. Plan for high yields and quality grades for years to come. Contact your retailer or visit www.midgetolerantwheat.ca. SUPPLEMENT TO THE WESTERN PRODUCER

BAYER CROPSCIENCE THEATRE - MONDAY, JANUARY 13 AT 2:30 PM & WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15 AT 2:30 PM
Camelina – A New Crop Opportunity for the Prairies - ChrisTINA ENYNCK, LINNAEUS PLANT SCIENCES
Camelina is a cruciferous oilseed that has gained interest in North America as an industrial crop for the production of environmentally friendly alternatives for petroleum products, such as biofuels, lubricants, and polymers; it is also being considered as a source for edible oil and neutraceuticals due to its high Omega-3 fatty acid content. Agronomically, camelina combines the advantages of a short growing season with frost and drought tolerance and
resistance to pests and diseases other crucifer oilseeds lack. Economically, it offers profitable returns through lower input costs and competitive pricing. Camelina presents an attractive addition to current cropping systems for both organic and conventional growers on the prairies, particularly in areas with lighter soils. This presentation will give an overview on recent agronomic research and current market opportunities.
BAYER CROPSCIENCE THEATRE -TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 AT 12:00 PM & WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15 AT 12:00 PM
Saskatchewan Soybean Agronomy We have been growing soybeans in the Yorkton area for 12 years now, experimenting with conventional and RoundUp Ready soybeans, and agronomy to make soybeans work. We have grown 14 varieties, experimented with inoculant rates, inoculant types, seed treatments, row spacing, fertilizer applications, and seeding dates. Word out there is soybeans are late maturing. We have had soybeans mature in 85 days, but there are late maturing varieties being promoted in Saskatchewan. Soybeans have been successfully grown from Assiniboia to The Pas, Oxbow to Lloydminster. Agronomic practices will vary with the year, soil type and location.
- KEVIN ELMY
Iron Deficiency Chlorosis, podding height, plant height, daylight sensitivity versus heat sensitivity, determinant versus indeterminate, bush versus slender plant types, interaction with row spacing, conventional versus RoundUp Ready. These are the options and characteristics that need to be determined for each area and variety. Corn Heat Unit is a poor indicator of how they mature through Saskatchewan. Discussion will cover where soybeans fit in rotation, agronomic considerations, crop management, equipment requirements, harvesting and marketing. Plus, give guidance on what questions to ask about new varieties for an area and for new growers.
BAYER CROPSCIENCE THEATRE - TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 AT 2:30 PM & THURSDAY, JANUARY 16 AT 2:30 PM
Hiring Temporary Foreign Workers for your Agricultural Operation
- Warren & Sara Green (www.saskimmigration.com)
The strength of the economy and record low unemployment have become a major issue forAgricultural operations as they find it difficult to complete for employees from a shrinking labour pool. More and more operations are finding they need to rely on temporary foreign workers to keep their operations running. With government regulations and policies under constant review knowing just how to manage recruitment and the process for applying for authorization to hire temporary foreign workers can be a challenge for employers. This presentation will provide an overview of Temporary Foreign Worker programs options for Agricultural operations to address their manpower challenges. These include the Seasonal Agricultural Worker program(SAWP), the Agricultural Stream, Stream for Lower Skilled Occupations (general farm labourers) and Stream for High Skilled Occupations (farm supervisors and specialty livestock
workers)Each program has its own set of criteria, it is important for producers to be aware of the requirements for each as well as the process for applying to the government for approval to hire temporary foreign workers (Labour Market Opinion) , what processing time frames they can expect as well as what their obligations to temporary foreign workers are. In addition there will be a discussion on how agricultural operations can identify temporary foreign workers, what the process for foreign workers to have work permits issued for both visa exempt countries and countries where a visitor visa is required to enter Canada and finally what if any options are available to transition a temporary foreign worker to permanent residence status for those employees you wish to hire on permanently. There will be an opportunity for a question and answer period after the presentation

BAYER CROPSCIENCE THEATRE - thursday, JANUARY 16 AT 12:00 PM
Straight-Combining Canola: Strategies for Success - Chris Holzapfel, IHARF While the majority of Argentine canola in western Canada is swathed, straight-combined acres continue to expand and there is considerable interest in this practice amongst growers. While straight-combining canola continues to have its risks, swathing has drawbacks as well and there are factors to consider which can minimize the risks and increase the probability of a positive and profitable straight-combining experience. The presentation will draw
from a variety of canola harvest management projects completed in Saskatchewan over the past decade and include discussion of many factors including crop establishment, timing of operations, equipment options, pod sealants, variety selection and pre-harvest glyphosate / desiccation. New trials in 2013 included a time of swathing / straight-combining demonstration and field evaluations of new canola hybrids with improved shatter tolerance.

A team to maximize your farm’s profitability? It just makes sense.
EXHIBITORS
What one farmer cannot do alone, together we can achieve—in the FNA farm business alliance. Together we have brought Members hundreds of millions of dollars in additional profit they would not otherwise have realized. All because they made the strategic decision to participate in FNA. And right now, FNA Members are investing in one of the world’s most advanced fertilizer projects, becoming partners in the FNA Fertilizer Limited Partnership and ProjectN. These farmer-partners are executing a strategy to enter the supply chain rather than merely pay for it. You too can move some of your fertilizer costs from the expense column to the revenue column, and secure your own fertilizer supply by actually owning a part of the new plant. Let FNA work for you. Participate with 10,000 other producers in the only farm business alliance dedicated to maximizing your profitability. We guarantee it will be one of the best investments you ever make in your operation.
Let’s Talk. Call us at 1-877-362-3276.

and Cropsphere 2014 Crop Production Week in Saskatoon from January 11 to 18, is seeing some significant format and venue changes. The popular weeklong meeting schedule is now split between the Saskatoon Inn and TCU Place.
CROP PRODUCTION WEEK
Four of the member organizations, Sask Pulse Growers, SaskCanola, SaskFlax and the Saskatchewan Oat Development Commission are moving to TCU Place for an event called CropSphere that includes plenary sessions, concurrent sessions and annual meetings for each of the organizations. The new Saskatchewan Wheat and Barley Commissions will also hold annual meetings at CropSphere. Eight other member organizations of Crop Production Week will continue to hold their meetings at the Saskatoon Inn, but in some cases the meeting days will be different than in the past. The Crop Production Week Special Session, a presentation of all the member organizations, is moving from Wednesday evening to Thursday evening at the Saskatoon Inn. The topic this year is Managing Farm Costs. There’s no cost to attend and everyone is welcome. Each organization is responsible for its own meeting agenda and registration. Of course, many producers will also be in the city for the Western Canadian Crop Production Show at Prairieland Park which starts Monday and runs through Thursday. The easiest way to link to all the events of the week is through cropweek.com. With the new bridge, traffic flow between Saskatoon Inn, TCU Place and Prairieland Park should be significantly improved for the thousands of agricultural visitors. See you in Saskatoon!
Here’s an overview of the agenda that’s presented in subsequent pages: ■ Saturday, January 11 - Sask Ag Grads at TCU Place ■ Monday, January 13 – Sask Winter Cereals Development Commission and Canaryseed Development Commission of Sask at Saskatoon Inn ■ Tuesday, January 14 – CropSphere (Pulse, Canola, Flax and Oats) at TCU Place ■ Wednesday, January 15 – CropSphere (Pulse, Canola, Flax and Oats) at TCU Place Sask Seed Growers Association at Saskatoon Inn ■ Thursday, January 16 – Sask Seed Growers Association, Sask Soil Conservation Association, Sask Mustard and Crop Production Week Special Session at Saskatoon Inn ■ Friday, January 17 – CWB, Agri-ARM and Sask Fruit Growers at Saskatoon Inn ■ Saturday, January 18 – Sask Fruit Growers at Saskatoon Inn
