New SeedMaster Parts and Service Hub Opens in North Dakota SeedMaster is excited to announce the expansion of its US presence with the opening of a new parts and service hub in Kenmare, North Dakota. “Our main focus in opening this new office is to make sure our customers are well taken care of as we continue to grow our business in North Dakota and across the Midwest,” says SeedMaster Sales Manager, Rochelle Beaujot. “Our customers have been asking for this, and we’re listening.” SeedMaster is actively engaged in expanding its dealer network across North Dakota and the Midwest. The new Kenmare location will streamline delivery of parts and service – providing faster and easier access – for SeedMaster customers and dealers across the Midwest, says Beaujot.

Next-Day Parts Delivery SeedMaster’s new parts and service hub in Kenmare, ND, is open for business with office manager Barb Gottschall (right) answering customers’ calls, and Regional Service Technician Brett Mohr (middle) and ACE Advisor Jason McKee providing service and technical support in the field.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

We’re Getting Smarter Every year at this time, we head to Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina to unveil our latest seeding innovations designed to keep growers at the leading edge of no-till farming. And every year we set up our outdoor booth, sometimes in torrential downpours and sometimes in scorching heat. However, this year we’ve gotten smarter. We’re moving

“Our goal is to provide next-day delivery of parts from the new location,” says Beaujot, noting the office is centrally located on a major highway within a 40-mile radius of most existing North Dakota customers. Getting parts across the border from Canada to the US isn’t always easy, she notes. “The border can sometimes add a week onto a parts shipment, which is much too long for a customer to wait, especially during spring seeding. Our Kenmare location will CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

More than 150 people attended SeedMaster’s Annual Demonstration and Crop Tour at the Research Farm last year. This year’s tour happens on June 26.

SeedMaster Research ‘Pushes the Envelope’ and Develops New Farming Practices As SeedMaster prepares to host its Annual Demonstration and Crop Tour, growers and dealers will once again be given a close-up look at the research trials now underway at SeedMaster’s Research Farm.

to see if it out yields the planter this year,” says Kinch. “The yields were very close last year.”

“Our mandate at the farm is to test and develop new technologies and new farming practices that push the envelope and challenge the status quo,” says Owen Kinch, SeedMaster Field Research Manager.

A new study exploring the impact of corn residue management techniques on seed survival and yield will also be conducted this year. “We’re seeding canola into last season’s corn stubble, and testing residue management practices ranging from no-till with the SeedMaster to heavy tillage,” he explains.

Sharing Knowledge and Results

Soybean Research

Owen Kinch

“By sharing the results we experience – good or bad – it saves our customers from taking risks on new techniques and cropping decisions that haven’t yet been proven,” he adds. “They can then use that knowledge to make the best seeding and equipment choices for their farm.”

This year’s research trials will once again measure the yield difference between 10-inch and 15-inch row spacing on hard red spring wheat. Kinch was surprised by the results of this trial last year. “I didn’t expect both row spacings to produce the same yields, but there was no difference,” he says. Replicating trials for at least three years is important, says Kinch, because it provides more statistically significant data. “For example, last year was a good growing season with excellent moisture, so were the results of these row spacing trials a one-year fluke? Stay tuned. We’ll find out,” he says.

SeedMaster Corn Meter Trials SeedMaster’s corn meter will go up against a corn planter in side-by-side trials again. “We’ve continued to refine the design of our corn meter, so we’re interested

demonstration,” he says, noting the SeedMaster system used at the farm is a 100-foot drill on 15-inch row spacing with a Nova XP 780 Smart Cart and a 20-bu, on-board UltraPro Canola Tank. The SeedMaster Research Farm is located south of Whitewood, Sask. The Annual Demonstration and Crop Tour happens on June 26 from 10 am to 4 pm and includes lunch. For more information, please call 1.888.721.3001.

Stubble management techniques will also be tested on soybeans, says Kinch. “Research has indicated that working the ground ahead of soybeans to blacken the soil and increase soil temperature is beneficial. We’ll compare that practice with other techniques, including no-till with the SeedMaster, and measure the impact on seed survival.” Canola seeding rates will also be studied again this year. The trials will target specific plant populations based on seed size and anticipated seed survival, says Kinch. “We’re targeting plant populations ranging from 2.5 to 10 plants per square foot, and comparing yields. SeedMaster has the best seed survival on the market, so we’re interested to see the results at those lower plant populations,” he explains.

Growth Regulator Trials SeedMaster Research Farm trials are all customer driven, says Kinch. “For example, I’ve been asked about growth regulators a lot lately. So this year we’re doing strip trials that apply a growth regulator to hard red spring wheat to determine if there’s a yield benefit.” The spring tour is an excellent time to visit the Research Farm, says Cory Beaujot, SeedMaster Marketing Manager. “The crops will have just emerged, allowing growers to clearly see the impact of the technology they were seeded with. We’ll also do a seeding

Field trials conducted at the SeedMaster Research Farm this year will include measuring the impact of different stubble management techniques on the seed survival of soybeans.

New Tow-Between Nova XP Smart Cart Gives Growers Choice and Flexibility SeedMaster is unveiling its new 630-bushel, towbetween Nova XP Smart Cart that provides growers with more choice and flexibility than ever when choosing tank systems to fit the exact needs of their farm. The new tow-between Nova XP features two 260-bu tanks for seed and nitrogen, and a smaller 110-bu tank for products applied at lower rates, says Greg Vennard, SeedMaster Engineering Manager. “The three tanks offer a good combination for various crop types, and the 630-bu capacity will let growers seed a lot of acres between fills,” adds Norbert Beaujot, SeedMaster President. Adding the tow-between cart to SeedMaster’s Nova XP series opens up a whole new range of possible tank combinations for producers, says Vennard. “For example, with a tow-between cart, you can pull anhydrous tanks behind the drill, and add granular or liquid on-frame tanks.”

Reduced Compaction A lot of farmers have been asking for a tow-between Nova XP, says Vennard, especially those with soil types that are more prone to compaction issues. “With a tow-between model, the opener is the last thing to go through the field, so the seedbed doesn’t get compacted by the tow-behind tank wheels,” he explains. The tow-between model also transfers more weight to the back of the tractor for greater traction, and its twowheel design, found on all Nova XP Smart Carts, makes it easy to back up and manoeuvre, says Vennard.

Loaded with Smart Technology The tow-between Nova XP is loaded with all of the same “smart” technology that sets SeedMaster’s Nova

It offers up to 10 zones of overlap control; load cell and SmartCal auto calibration technology, variable rate capability, and advanced metering and distribution systems that meter high rates of product on large drills without plugging. “We’ve also perfected the routing of product delivery hoses from the metering area over the hitch of the drill to the manifolds,” adds Vennard. “We pay a lot more attention to these finer details than other manufacturers. It translates into more reliable delivery of product, because the cleaner you run your hoses,

The new Kenmare office is already open for business with full-time office manager, Barb Gottschall, taking customers’ calls, and regional service technician Brett Mohr offering expanded technical support to farmers and dealers across the Midwest. SeedMaster ACE Advisor Jason McKee will also work from the new location when he’s not on the road visiting customers and dealers.

Substantial Growth “SeedMaster has experienced substantial growth in North Dakota and Montana over the past decade,” says McKee. “Demand for our products continues to grow as farmers see the fast, uniform emergence and strong yields their neighbors are getting with our seeding systems – and as they hear about advanced

the more product per acre you can meter without plugging,” he explains. Growers can also add SeedMaster’s fast-fill, highcapacity conveyor to the tow-between Nova XP. “The conveyor moves a lot of product quickly, eliminates seed damage that can happen with augers, and cleans out nicely,” says Vennard. SeedMaster will launch the new tow-between Nova XP at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina on June 18 to 20.

technologies such as our SmartCal auto calibration, Auto Zone Command™ overlap control, and the precision metering on our tank systems.” “Having this new parts and service depot will help fuel that demand,” says McKee. “It shows our customers that we’re committed to serving this market and we’re here for the long haul.” “And hopefully our customers will feel comfortable enough to drop by the new office to meet our staff, enjoy a cup of coffee, and ask any questions they might have about our products,” he adds. Master Seeders Knowledge Event Attracts Top Farmers and Researchers More than 25 top growers from across Western Canada gathered in Emerald Park, Sask., for the first ever Master Seeders Knowledge Event this spring. “The goal was to provide a learning forum for Network members, who are some of the most progressive farmers out there,” says Owen Kinch, SeedMaster Field Research Manager. “We wanted to give them the opportunity to hear from leading researchers in the industry, and to network and learn from each other about their seeding practices and techniques.” Speakers at the event explored topics ranging from low canola plant populations to optimizing wheat and oat yields. Research scientist Garry Hnatowich provided insight on growing soybeans in Western Canada. “Likely no other person in Saskatchewan has as much experience growing soybeans as Garry,” says Kinch. “Most of our growers are interested in soybeans, so being able to listen and speak with Garry one-on-one was valuable for all of us.”

Helping Maximize Profitability Doug Erickson, who farms with his brother Dean and his mother Pat near Birsay, Sask., was most interested in hearing the latest results from ongoing trials at the SeedMaster Research Farm. “Other manufacturers will just sell you a new machine and tell you what it can do. SeedMaster takes it right to the field level and proves what the equipment can do. Owen and his team continually come up with new ideas that help us maximize profitability and get the most out of our equipment.”

More than 25 top growers attended the first ever Master Seeders Knowledge Event this spring. The one-day event was a learning and networking forum that featured leading researchers and industry experts including Chris Paterson with Agri-Data Solutions. The Ericksons joined the Master Seeders Network last year to test canola seeding rates on their farm. “Doing the trials in our own soil types and seeding conditions confirmed the rates we were already using are right for our farm,” says Erickson, who was among about 25 Network members conducting on-farm trials last year.

“We compared rates of 2, 3, and 5 lbs/acre and found zero yield difference between them,” he says, noting similar results were observed in trials at the SeedMaster Research Farm and by other Network members. The canola seeding rate trials are a good example of the tremendous value that the Master Seeders Network offers to growers, says Chris Holzapfel, a speaker at the event and the Research Manager at the Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation. “To have several people running the same trial can be powerful because it provides a large volume of data showing how a particular seeding practice performs under a wide range of conditions in just one year,” he explains. “It’s similar to the Agri-ARM and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada networks, where researchers across the country run the same trials in different locations, providing meaningful conclusions much more quickly than if just one grower conducts a trial over several years.”

Membership Has Doubled

Research scientist Stu Brandt, with the Northeast Agriculture Research Foundation, offered valuable insight on optimizing wheat and oat yields at the Knowledge Event.

4

Interest in the Master Seeders Network has doubled over the past year, says Kinch, noting there are 86 members compared to 45 last year. A major focus of the Network this season will involve the new corn meter that SeedMaster is developing. “Very little research has been done with grain corn in Western Canada,” says Kinch. “The onus is on farmers to determine the best seeding rates, fertilizer application methods, and row spacings. Our members are very eager to conduct this research which will also compare our corn meter to other air seeders and planters.” The Master Seeders Network is open to all SeedMaster owners interested in on-farm research and innovation.

SmartCal Delivers Wreck-Saving Precision SeedMaster owners across Western Canada and the Midwest reported unprecedented, wreck-saving accuracy with SeedMaster’s new SmartCal auto calibration technology as they seeded their crops with it for the first time this spring. The new game-changing technology debuted on more than 100 new SeedMaster systems as a standard feature that farmers can now rely on to help ensure their calibration rates are always within 97 to 100 per cent accuracy.

Unprecedented Accuracy “It worked super. It takes all the guesswork out of calibrating and wondering if your calibrations are right,” says Tony Fast, who tried out the system on his 9,000acre grain farm in northeastern Montana this spring. Fast says his calibrations ended up being 99.5 to 100 per cent accurate on each tank. He seeded with a 300bu on-board tank and Nova XP 780 Smart Cart that he purchased with a new 80-foot SeedMaster drill last fall. Fast still did a catch test and manual calibration before he began seeding, which was typically up to eight per cent off. After seeding 20 acres, he then used the SmartCal to do a second calibration, which proved to be nearly 100 per cent accurate every time. “We just push a button to recalibrate without ever having to get out of the cab. We will never buy another cart without scales or SmartCal,” he says. Fast says his neighbours use another brand of cart that doesn’t have load cells or SmartCal technology. “Their calibrations are way off unless they do multiple manual calibrations with the catch test, which takes time.”

Just Press a Button SmartCal works in tandem with SeedMaster’s Real-Time Product Weighing™ technology to continuously track product usage in each tank while you seed. It then uses that live product weight data to continuously recalculate and recalibrate on the go with exceptional accuracy, explains SeedMaster ACE Advisor for North Dakota and Montana, Jason McKee.

More than 100 farmers seeded their crops with SeedMaster’s new SmartCal auto calibration technology this spring giving them unprecedented calibration accuracy. “The operator simply presses a button to start SmartCal and check their calibration at any time, and then presses it again to accept a new calibration or override it if they choose,” says McKee. Calibration mistakes are easy to make, says Fast, but SmartCal will catch errors quickly – preventing wrecks that could cost big money. “I remember we once calibrated an old drill using kilograms instead of pounds, so we basically applied twice the rate at twice the cost. We were plugging up hoses before we caught our mistake,” he says. Dusty Ingersoll, who farms in central Montana, says SmartCal was one of the reasons he bought a 70-foot SeedMaster system this spring. “It’s extremely accurate,

easy to use, and a big improvement over the calibration rates with my other drills, which could be up to 30 per cent out,” he says.

Time Saver Ingersoll expects SmartCal will save him a lot of time next season. “I’ll record my calibration rates from this year and plug in that number next spring. I won’t even do a catch test. After 10 acres, I’ll turn on SmartCal and everything will be good.” SmartCal is a standard feature on all new SeedMaster systems, and is a free software upgrade for SeedMaster systems produced between 2011 and 2014.

fertilizer using GPS and the planter. This year we’ll use a more typical approach, applying the small amount of fertilizer that planters can handle on 30-inch spacing, and then top dress the crop. We’ll then use the SeedMaster to plant corn on 15-inch rows and sideband fertilizer in one pass. We’ll keep you posted on the results.

New Technology We plan to demonstrate our new Smart Openers™ technology at the SeedMaster Research Farm Demonstration and Crop Tour. It automatically lifts and lowers the openers – and turns product off and on – at exactly the right time when making a headland turn. By fully automating that process, there’s less chance of error, and it’s one less thing for the operator to worry about. We plan to offer it as an optional upgrade on 2015 SeedMaster systems. SeedMaster will demonstrate its precision metering systems and new SmartCal auto calibration technology at trade shows this year – including Canada’s Farm Progress Show in June – with this live metering display.

FROM THE PRESIDENT (CONT. FROM PAGE 1) tow-between Nova XP Smart Cart (see page 3). It’s all about giving growers more choice and variation in tank size, and helping eliminate compaction concerns that some may have with tow-behind models. Our tow-between Nova XP is loaded with the same smart technology that sets our Nova series apart from all other bulk metering tanks. I don’t think we’ll ever again build a tank without Auto Zone Command overlap control and Real-Time Product Weighing, because those features have proven so valuable to producers. Look for these features on three different Nova XP models we’ll display outside the Canada Centre and The Co-operators Centre at the show. We’ll also unveil our new 345-bu on-board tank – a specialized, seed-only tank designed for all seed types. It gives you the gentle precision of our Individual Row Metering and the option of adding our UltraPro Canola Meter™, and our new corn meter currently under development. Like all SeedMaster tanks, it features cost-saving technology like Auto Zone Command and Real-Time Product Weighing.

technology, which is now a standard feature on all SeedMaster systems (see page 5).

New SeedMaster App Try out our new SeedMaster App at the show, too. It’s a handy tool you can download for free from our website. It’s a seed rate calculator that will store your calibration rates, and suggest an initial calibration for any crop. You can then use SmartCal to adjust that rate to near-perfect accuracy. After the Farm Progress Show, you’re invited to the SeedMaster Research Farm for our Annual Demonstration and Crop Tour on June 26. We seeded corn and soybeans on the farm again this year. I’m excited by the excellent job the SeedMaster drill and our Nova XP Smart Cart can do on soybeans. I look forward to the results of our side-by-side corn trials comparing our new corn meter with a corn planter again this year. The yields were very close last year but we gave the planter an unfair advantage. We used the SeedMaster to sideband fertilizer and then planted the corn as close as possible to the

Keep an eye out for our patent-pending Smart Look Ahead™ technology – one of our latest R&D breakthroughs, which is currently under development. It enhances the extreme precision of our Auto Zone Command overlap control system. You’ll no longer have to guess how long it takes product to travel from the meter to the openers. Smart Look Ahead™ will automatically do that calculation for each manifold and establish the correct timing for the product being applied. Now that’s smart! As demand for SeedMaster products grow, we’re hiring more people and expanding production to keep up with that demand. The new assembly facility we built last year is in full operation, allowing us to assemble two 100-foot drills with Nova XP Smart Carts simultaneously. That new building has freed up space that we’re now using to build offices to house our growing team (see page 5). Stop by our booth at the Farm Progress Show, or come to the Demonstration and Crop Tour on June 26 to meet our new employees. We’d love the chance to say hello and show you what we’re up to. See you soon! Norbert Beaujot, P. Eng. President, SeedMaster

Farmers have asked us to increase the size of our 300-bu tank to give them enough capacity to seed a quarter section of wheat in one fill. This new tank does just that. We’ve also upgraded our conveyor arm so that filling both the tow-between Nova XP and the 345-bu on-board tank is a simple manoeuvre with our fast-fill conveyor. We’re also upgrading the wire harnesses on all of our systems for greater durability and quality – because we know it’s the little things that often make a big difference when you’re seeding. Be sure to check out our live metering display at the show. It demonstrates our precision metering systems and our new SmartCal auto calibration

SE¯D Foundation Supports Rural Communities Less than a year after it was launched, SeedMaster’s new philanthropic foundation – SE¯D (Social Entrepreneurship By Design) – is proving to be an enormous success as it helps communities across Western Canada and the Midwest raise money for important projects. “The vision behind SE¯D is to fund fundraising events, primarily in rural communities, which often struggle to raise money for badly needed projects,” says Joey Tremblay, SE¯D Foundation Coordinator.

A Business Approach to Philanthropy “SE¯D takes a business approach to philanthropy by providing ‘seed’ money to help community groups grow their fundraisers,” explains Tremblay. “It takes money to make money. SE¯D provides an initial investment that is typically used to cover basic expenses, allowing these groups to proceed with greater confidence and often expand their fundraiser to make more money than anticipated.”

Since its launch last November, SE¯D has funded 19 fundraisers and continues to approve funding for more charitable projects in communities across Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, North Dakota, and Montana. “We’ve given out more than $72,000, which Joey Tremblay has been used to raise close to $300,000 by the fundraisers we’ve supported. That’s a healthy return on a charitable investment,” says Tremblay.

Community Building Many of the fundraisers that SE¯D supports are events that draw communities together around a single goal, he notes. “A remarkable example is Balcarres, a small town near Regina, Sask. The local Lions Club held a live

It felt good to see the positive impact SE¯D is having as it helps build and strengthen communities by supporting these events,” says Tremblay. SE¯D has funded emergency fundraisers, such as the Broadview Curling Club’s silent auction to replace a leaking roof that was starting to collapse. Other SE¯D recipients include the volunteer fire department in Craik, Sask., which raised money for a new fire truck, and the Ryan McCauley Benefit in Welwyn, Sask., that raised money for a local resident who was in an accident and needed a wheelchair accessible bathroom installed in his house.

Giving Back The SE¯D Foundation was created by SeedMaster to mark its 10th anniversary as a manufacturer of innovative, award-winning technology, and to give back to communities that have supported the company’s growth over the past decade, says Tremblay. SeedMaster provides $100,000 annually to SE¯D to fund fundraisers across its market area. Over the next few months, SE¯D will embark on a grassroots marketing campaign to create greater awareness of the Foundation. “We’ll contact town halls and service groups, such as Lions Clubs, across SeedMaster’s market area to explain what we do – because it’s a tough concept to explain in a flyer or on a website. People aren’t used to this entrepreneurial approach to fundraising, and the idea that they can apply to have their fundraising expenses paid for,” says Tremblay. “We’ll ask if they have any fundraisers coming up and invite them to apply for SE¯D funding. We’d like to be inundated with applications so we can help even more rural communities achieve greater success in their fundraising efforts,” he says. To find out if your community fundraising event might qualify for SE¯D funding, visit www.seedmaster.ca/sed.

Full Line Ag Becomes New SeedMaster Dealer Ross Guenther says demand for SeedMaster products has grown rapidly in southwestern Saskatchewan since the equipment dealership he works for recently announced it has become a SeedMaster dealer.

Growing Demand “We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about SeedMaster systems lately,” says Guenther, Sales Manager at Full Line Ag, in Swift Current, Sask. With

SeedMaster’s 2014 Summer Sale about to begin, Guenther anticipates the summer will be much busier than usual. “A lot of our customers are interested in the new technologies SeedMaster has developed over the last few years, such as Auto Zone Command overlap control, FLIP (Full Last Implement Pass)™, SmartCal auto calibration technology, and Real-Time Product Weighing,” he says. “SeedMaster has always been a

7

leader in precision seeding systems, and now they’re leading the industry with these new technologies.” Guenther says farmers really like the Real-Time Product Weighing load cells on SeedMaster tanks “because they can put in the correct amount of product to finish up a field without guessing. It’s not just an estimated eyeshot anymore, which makes cleanout and switching crops a lot more efficient.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

New SeedMaster Dealer (CONT. FROM PAGE 7)

Precision Seeding Focus He likes that SeedMaster focuses exclusively on designing precision seeding systems that offer numerous row spacings and drill widths from 40 to 100 feet wide. “It means we can custom build drills to meet the individual needs of our customers.” SeedMaster systems can also be adapted to match the wide variety of soil conditions and moisture availability across southwestern Saskatchewan, he says. With changes in crop rotations over the past decade, farmers in southwestern Saskatchewan grow a lot more canola and mustard in addition to wheat, durum, peas, and lentils, says Guenther. “The precise seeding depth, metering, and even crop maturity that farmers get with a SeedMaster makes it ideally suited to all of those crops and more,” he says.

Service and Support Farmers in the region are pleased to have a new SeedMaster dealer close by that offers parts and service, says Guenther. He notes the product support and training

Ross Guenther, Sales Manager with Full Line Ag in Swift Current, Sask. that SeedMaster provides to its customers and dealers is impressive. “SeedMaster really stands behind its products. One of the criteria in becoming a SeedMaster dealer is you’re required to spend X number of hours

with each customer to set up their machine. That isn’t a prerequisite for most other companies. It shows they care about their customers,” he says.
