A Message From... The Agri-Trade Committee Chair Agri-Trade is the same…and it’s not. As Committee Chair, I have the privilege of helping to steer Agri-Trade for the next two years. However, my line of site is far beyond 2016. As we turn a corner with our 31st Agri-Trade Show, I am working with the owners of Agri-Trade (The Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce and Westerner Park) as well as CEO Dianne Smirl and fellow committee members to imagine agriculture in the year 2020 in order to determine how to shape the future of this great trade show. What will be the same and what will be different? How will it affect Agri-Trade? From my vantage, agriculture will continue to be rooted in the soil. The connection to nature and a farmer’s ability to grow sustainable crops and raise quality livestock will be more important than ever. Also, the need for farmers and farm families to connect with each other and the industry will not change. And, because Agri-Trade occupies a unique spot on the calendar being the “last show of the old crop and the first show of the new crop year”, we want to continue offering a great place for industry and farmers to meet. Additionally, we have an opportunity (if not an obligation) to use Agri-Trade as a vehicle to help educate our city cousins about how agriculture is employing technology to help farmers produce high quality, safe food for urban plates. To facilitate the “social side” of Agri-Trade, you will see a few more areas for farmers and their families to greet, meet and eat together. Over the next few years, we will also be adding a few more social functions which will increase your opportunity to connect with each other. We hope you enjoy these enhancements. As we look to 2020 and beyond, technological and economic forces will continue to shape and change agriculture at an exponential pace. The Agri-Trade show of tomorrow will be different. You will see robotic machines, there will many more companies featuring sensor devices and there will be more exhibitors showcasing digital technology integration within equipment enabling farmers to do more with less labor. To meet this shift, you are going to see more emphasis on agriculture technology at Agri-Trade. It is important that Agri-Trade be relevant to farmers, so we are also going to increase our focus on the types of exhibitors at the show looking for those that are “Ag Centric”. Of course we will continue to feature the newest trends by recognizing those winners of our Ag Innovation Awards. Another change is the new Agri-Trade Logo. You will see the new logo on the Carhartt Vests that all committee members will be sporting this year. If you have an idea or suggestion reach out to any committee member who will be glad to talk. At Agri-Trade we define Innovation as the development of new ideas that meet new requirements or market needs. Innovation differs from “invention” in that innovations refer to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea of method rather than the creation of the idea of method itself.
The goal for exhibitors in submitting their applications is to showcase to our attendees a new way to approach a challenge or solution for an agriculture problem. The judging process incorporates an efficient and focused matrix system that weighs a number of important questions applied to each entrant. A team of volunteer judges (regional farmers) enter qualification numbers for each entry and the winners are determined by the weighting of each judge’s response. This year we celebrate the 7th year of our Ag Innovations program at the show. Started in 2008, the program was developed to celebrate innovation by our exhibitors in the Agriculture Industry and the program gains momentum each year. Agri-Trade welcomes Ag Innovations submissions from all confirmed Agri-Trade exhibitors and you must commit to having your “innovation” on the show floor in November. There is no cost to submit your entry but importance (by the judging panel) is placed on the quality and caliber of the submission. Ag Innovations is selected by a committee of area producers that are actively involved in their own farm operations as well as the Agriculture Industry.

Visit this AgInnovation Winner in the Prairie Pavilion. Booth #PRA0102
The combine operator is able to select a harvest priority and specify which area(s) they are having performance issues with based upon three choices: Grain quality – dirty grain tank sample, broken kernels, grain loss – separator loss or shoe loss, straw condition – straw quality based upon which area(s) the operator desires to improve, the combine then recommends the adjustment which the operator confirms. The combine will then perform the setting change automatically. The combine operator evaluates the change in performance and works with the combine to make additional adjustments to achieve optimal combine performance. Giving Agribusiness a Voice: The Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce
There is no question that Alberta is awash in resource wealth. Our vast reserves in oil and gas have granted us a tremendously successful energy industry and a proportionally successful manufacturing and industrial sector that works as support. It has also resulted in over half of the population of 4.1 million living in just 2 cities of our province. Combine that with the ag industry being spread across the province, fragmented by sector, and only comprising 2% of the population, it can be easy for issues facing our agriculture industry to be overlooked, put on the back-burner, and even ignored by our government officials.
What is it? Chambers of commerce have given small businesses a voice since the first one was conceived over 400 years ago. As a business association the chamber brings strength in numbers and acts on their concerns. Ten years ago members of the Red Deer chamber came together to form a committee that would focus on issues affecting the agriculture industry. The committee had and continues to have representation from all sectors of the industry, including hogs, dairy, beef, chicken, grains, value-added processing, and even finance and law. This committee represents tremendous awareness of issues affecting the ag industry and has brought the chamber immense clout when advocating their positions. With a strong, unified voice, we get the ear of the government and the ability to make positive change.
Ending the Canada Wheat Board Monopoly During World War II, prairie farmers were largely responsible for ensuring our Allied nations got fed. Membership in the Canadian Wheat Board was made mandatory during the War in order to ensure a steady supply of food was made available. Fifty years later, membership was still mandatory and farmers still did not have the freedom to choose their buyer and negotiate their own price. A
group of volunteers got together through the chamber and set a policy to call for the end of the Canada Wheat Board monopoly. Through constant and diligent advocacy efforts, the monopoly was eventually disbanded, granting farmers the freedom to sell their own harvest resulting in millions in additional revenues and increased potential for value-added processing.
Where we are today Through the Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce, with diverse industry representation, the Agriculture & Environment Policy Committee is looking at a number of issues affecting the industry including: the myths, misconceptions, and fear mongering surrounding GMOs, land-use, conflict, and ownership rights, labour shortage, how to increase opportunities for value-added processing, and increasing regulatory harmonization across borders. The committee’s goal is to identify the issues, obstacles, and opportunities facing the industry and work to improve the environment in which you do business.
