GRAHAM DELAET GIVES BACK WITH GOLF

Every parent will tell you that having a child changes everything. At the conclusion of the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship in November 2015, PGA Tour golf star Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan rushed home to more important matters. His wife, Ruby, gave birth to twins just days later.

“I

was so lucky that they were born when they were and I was able to hang out with them for the first two months of their lives,” commented DeLaet who is now back in action in the PGA Tour’s 2016 season. “It was tough to leave them, that’s for sure. It’s pretty fun though. You have to

4

be selfish as a professional golfer, and for the first time in my life I’m not being selfish, and it’s pretty nice.” Known to be one of the game’s best ball strikers, DeLaet had a milestone year on the PGA Tour in 2013, placing 8th in the FedExCup Playoffs, and ending the year with a breakthrough performance in his first Presidents Cup International team

appearance. Graham continued his impressive play in the 2013/2014 PGA Tour season, with six top 10 finishes and three top 10 finishes during the 2014/2015 PGA Tour season. Perspectives and responsibilities have changed with the new additions to the DeLaet family, and so has DeLaet’s level of understanding towards other members of

the parenting community. This new viewpoint has carried over into his charitable efforts, with an even greater sense of purpose. “I think our first fundraising event was during my rookie year”, reflects Delaet. “They were building a new hospital in Weyburn and we were looking for ways that we could help, so Ruby and I went back to Weyburn that summer and held a charity event. It was pretty amazing. We raised almost $300,000 that day. So the next year it was a no-brainer, we went back there and did it again. In a couple of years, we raised almost $700,000 in a town of 10,000 –

11,000 people, it was pretty amazing. From there, we decided to form our own foundation in support of children’s health and junior golf. I wouldn’t be where I am, if not for children’s golf. I’d like to see another PGA Tour player come out of Saskatchewan, and to give them the opportunity to learn the things that golf can teach them, like sportsmanship.” The Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation was launched in 2014 with a central focus on supporting children’s health and wellness, as well as the development of junior golf at all levels. Since 2011, Graham and Ruby DeLa-

et’s charitable initiatives have raised over $1 million for causes and organizations across Canada with these concentrations including Golf Saskatchewan, Children’s Wish Foundation of Saskatchewan, Ronald McDonald House of Saskatchewan, Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan, and the Calgary Flames Foundation. Most recently, DeLaet has become the face of Golf Canada’s Golf in Schools initiative to encourage participation and the growth of golf at the grassroots level. continued on page 6 ››

Graham DeLaet will compete this summer in an exclusive exhibition golf match at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links and Casino June 20-26.

›› continued from page 5 The Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation also supported the national program with a donation of golf supplies and teaching materials to 37 elementary and secondary schools across Saskatchewan. This year, the Foundation has taken their support of the Saskatchewan community to a new level. It was announced in late 2015 that the Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation, in partnership with DeLaet’s agency (SportBox Entertainment Group), would take over as the host organization of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada’s professional golf stop in Saskatchewan – the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open. With the involvement of the Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation, the DeLaet’s annual charity golf tournament, Graham Slam, will be integrated into the Monday of the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open tournament. To kick off the event week, Graham Slam will see DeLaet compete against three other celebrities in an exclusive “no ropes” exhibition golf match, cocktail reception, and live concert. This intimate experience, held at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links and Casino, will be limited to only a few hundred people –

6

giving attendees a rare opportunity to get up close and interact with the four celebrities. “Without this community, we wouldn’t be in the position we are to be able to do something like this,” said Graham DeLaet. “Our goal is to support children’s health and wellness causes, to raise awareness for our Foundation, and for everyone to have a great time throughout the event week. I am also excited to bring three special guests to my home province - to show them a true prairie-style experience and to help us achieve our donation goals.” Through last year’s Graham Slam event, the Graham and Ruby DeLaet Foundation were able to grant three year old Clara (who

is recovering from Type B Acute Lymphoma Leukemia) her wish to visit Disney World, as well as covering the cost of her family’s accommodations at the Saskatchewan Ronald McDonald House so that they could stay near her while she is receiving treatments. Moving forward, and as the driving force behind the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open ft. Graham Slam, the DeLaet Foundation will use the overall event week as a platform to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan in order to purchase a pediatric ambulance and equipment that will travel to all corners of the province. “The incredible support that Graham has received throughout his career – from an amateur golfer to a professional – is a testament to the people of Saskatchewan”, said Ruby DeLaet. “It just makes us that much more passionate about giving back to the community, knowing that it will continue to be paid forward”. The SIGA Dakota Dunes Open has become a fixture in the Saskatoon community and summer calendar, with the new programming only adding to the strong positive impact the tournament has had over its history. This summer’s tournament will be held

from June 20th to 26th at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links and Dakota Dunes Casino, just twenty five minutes south of Saskatoon. Following the Graham Slam portion of event week on Monday, June 20th, the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open will begin with the Official Pro-Am on Tuesday, June 21st, where participating teams will play alongside a Mackenzie Tour professional over 18 holes of premier golf. Tournament action will then commence with the first round of competitive play on Thursday, June 23rd, showcasing 156 international golfers, and will conclude on Sunday, June 26th with the 2016 Champion being crowned. “This initiative is a strategic fit for SportBox because of the company’s presence in Saskatchewan, relationship and collaboration with Graham, and him having roots in the province and being embedded in the community,” said David Dube, Chairman of SportBox Entertainment Group – DeLaet’s agency. With the event taking place in his home province of Saskatchewan, and DeLaet being an alumnus of the Mackenzie Tour, it was a natural fit for him to get involved and everyone is looking forward to seeing the event grow in popularity.

Make some memories in

REGINA

The cold wind is gone and the sun is out, it’s time to find that authentic local experience! This is truly a great time to visit Regina with tons of events and attractions’ programming taking place.

A

t Wascana Centre visitors can spend a day walking around the lake and having a picnic on the grass at the foot of the historic legislative building, or hit the water in a rented canoe or SUP board as you take in the se-

rene landscape. A particularly awesome time to visit is July 1 when the crowds come out to celebrate Canada’s birthday. If you want to spend some time indoors, tons of attractions can also be seen throughout the Centre like the Royal Saskatchewan Museum or Saskatchewan Science Centre.

On the west side of the city, dive head first into history at the RCMP Heritage Centre, located right beside the RCMP Depot; Canada’s training grounds. Here visitors can receive guided tours of the Heritage Centre’s galleries and from July 1 to Aug. 9 experience one of Tourism Canada’s signature experiences, The Sunset Ceremony. For those who wish to get a bit of the downtown experience, hit up the Regina Farmer’s Market, which moves to its outdoor location May 7 until Oct. 8 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Here, you can embrace the local products while you hit up one of the many food trucks that scatter the area at lunch. This is also a good time to grab a pint on the patio at one of the nearby pubs or new restaurants and hang with the locals. continued on page 10 ››

›› continued from page 9 For visitors who want to check out downtown’s nightlife, get some delicious food and entertainment at the Market under the Stars. If you’re around for a few days don’t forget to explore the area around Regina. With so much picturesque landscape, there is a lot to see and do that is worth a trip out of the city. Just 25 minutes outside of Regina, is Lumsden. This scenic route will remind you that although we are an urban city, we are nestled in the most beautiful prairie landscape. Continue on your travels to Over the Hill Orchards, home of the Prairie Cherries, and discover how the Kreutzer family is growing some of the best fruit in Saskatchewan. Finish your tour with a coffee and gluten-free Prairie Cherry pie. Don’t want the Prairie train to end? Take part in a tasting and tour at Last Mountain Distillery, Saskatchewan’s first micro distillery. Last Mountain produces high-quality, handcrafted spirits, including Canada’s only naturally infused dill pickle vodka and Prairie Cherry whiskey using over the hill orchards cherries. Still want a little time out of the city? Head to Regina Beach, located 45 minutes from the city centre. Start the day off right by finding your perfect spot on the beach to set up your blanket and umbrella. Enjoy complete relaxation while you lay in the sun with your feet in the warm sand. Swimming, boating and fishing are some of the favourite activities to do while spending time at Regina Beach (Local tip: Hit up Blue Bird Café for some fish and chips! You won’t regret it.) Big into events? Regina plays host to

For some more action in August, hit up the Queen City Ex for rocking music and rides that are geared towards all levels; from the adrenaline junkie to junior rider. Also happening this year in May is Saskatchewan Fashion Week. Catch the latest trends in fashion from some of the up and coming talent in province as they converge in Regina. Or tantalize your taste buds with foods of all types and backgrounds at Mosaic Festival of Cultures held at the beginning of June. This event is three days long and celebrates Regina’s diverse multicultural communities. This year is the 49th and proves it’s something people want again and again. esting along the southern border of the province, Grasslands National Park offers unique experiences within the spectacular, undulating native prairie and badlands. The park’s east and west blocks each provide truly breathtaking opportunities for exploration. Listen. Do you hear that? Neither do we. Here you will experience the silent echoes of a bygone era, far away from highways and noise, and at night the stars blaze in one of the darkest and best astronomy observing Dark Sky Preserves in Canada – you will feel you can reach up and touch them! You can have all this serenity and plenty of activities and camping too – from guided programs, events, front country campsites and tipi camping,

to backpacking and pitching a tent on the open prairie. The East Block features the Saskatchewan Badlands – if prehistoric, windscoured rock formations, dinosaur fossils and quicksand pique your interest, then stop in at the Visitor Centre at the Rock Creek Campground and ask enthusiastic Parks Canada visitor services staff for tips on guided experiences, events and hiking. Or, ride a horse drawn wagon on Saturdays in July and August. The West Block of the park is home to unique wildlife not found anywhere else in the province – black-tailed prairie dogs, rattlesnakes and short-horned lizards can be seen when hiking the trails or you can glimpse plains bison grazing in their natural habitat.

Supplement to The Western Producer

Besides a range of guided hikes and walks, or taking in weekend activities all summer long at the Frenchman Valley Campground, there is a new way to explore this amazing landscape: via horseback (also a very old way to get around in this country!). Come out for sunset horseback rides Saturdays in July and August, or for the more adventurous, try the new Cattle Trails and Cowboy Tales experience – where participants spend two days and two nights in the saddle riding the range, eating cowboy chow, hearing stories about the old days of wrangling and rustling, seeing amazing wildlife and viewing the remnants of 100-year-old homesteads, tipi rings and fossils. continued on page 14 ››

13

›› continued from page 13 If you prefer your own two feet, then check out one of the many hiking trails in the park, including the brand new Eagle Butte Trail with rare wildflowers, intriguing geology and rare views. Or if you are looking for more of a challenge, then the 70-mile Butte Trail is for you, where you can conquer one of the highest points in the park. West of the park lie the beautiful Cypress Hills where you can discover one of the earliest North West Mounted Police posts, Fort Walsh National Historic Site. Step back in time to the 1870s and see firsthand what life was like in a police fort in the lawless time of rotgut whiskey runners. Imagine the scarlet serge-clad North West Mounted Police (the forerunners of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) marching on parade, hear Métis stories handed down

14

through generations and test your bartering skills at the trading post and Métis cabins. And new for 2016, don’t miss the Wild West Family Fest July 9th. East of Regina, take a road trip to get close and connect with farm animals and discover prairie life from a century ago at Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site. Early Saskatchewan settler W.R. Motherwell became a community leader whose passion for discovering new and improved methods of farming took him all the way to Parliament as Minister of Agriculture. Come visit and live a day in the life of a prairie farmer in the 1900s on W.R. Motherwell’s historic homestead, Lanark Place. North and west of Saskatoon, explore two additional national historic sites: Fort Battleford and Batoche. Each shares a different chapter of the events surrounding

the 1885 Northwest Resistance and the lasting consequences on the Métis, the First Nations and settlers. Fort Battleford National Historic Site’s Fort Fest returns this summer on July 9th and 2016 will also mark the return of the Louis Riel Relay Days, which will be taking place on the meandering South Saskatchewan River and historic, scenic grounds of Batoche National Historic Site August 20th & 21st. From Batoche, travel north and discover Prince Albert National Park’s wild West Side. While this park is famous for boreal forest, clear lakes and sandy beaches around the community of Waskesiu, true prairie aficionados know that the West Side is equally stunning. Crossing the Sturgeon River as you enter the park provides a sneak peak to the unique geography you’ll find. Leave your

cares and concerns parked in the car or horse trailer as you venture off to explore several points along the 11-kilometre Valleyview Trail. Have your birding checklist ready. Nearly 80 species of migratory birds will accompany you in song as you wind through the forest and pockets of rare grasslands. Look for dirt wallows made by plains bison rolling on the ground and wildflowers that dot the landscape in early summer. As well as free-ranging bison, moose, elk, black bear, beaver and deer also frequent the West Side, while scorched tree stumps tell the story of how this ecosystem is dependent on fire to maintain a healthy mosaic of pine, aspen and grasslands that wildlife rely on. Under a canopy of trembling aspen that meanders out on to the valley ridge and back again, travel along the 7.8-kilometre

Woodland Loop. It is perfect for a mountain biking excursion while the full 11-kilometre-hike to Jonassons Flats is ideal for hikers looking to backcountry camp. At the end of your day’s adventure, set out your sleeping bag and gaze up in wonder at the night sky while listening for wolves as the wind carries their howling through the trees and long feathery grasses to your campsite. Outfitters in the area can be hired to guide your group, providing camping accommodation and cowboy cooking straight off the tailgate of a horsedrawn wagon. After a sunrise breakfast, return 11 km via the connector path leading to the West Side Boundary Trail that finishes at the parking lot. If you only have the day to visit the West Side, pack a hearty lunch and, from the Val-

leyview trailhead, walk, stroll or wheel your way along the accessible 200-metre Valleyview Lookout Trail to the picnic site where you can view an iconic valley. It’s a feast for the soul. After lunch, continue on the more rugged trail another 2.8 km to Stoney Plain Meadows for an even more stunning vista. This summer, familiarize (or reacquaint) yourself with Saskatchewan’s protected national historic sites and parks. The Battlefords The Battlefords, nestled along the scenic North Saskatchewan River, is an exciting place to visit for summer 2016. With much to do, many attractions and amenities, this bustling Saskatchewan tourist destination truly does have everything under the sun.

I

f you are looking for outdoor adventure, the Battlefords has a lot to offerwhether it is soaring through the sky on one of Canada`s longest ziplines, golfing on some of the top-rated golf courses in the province, soaking up rays on Jackfish Lake, hiking or biking in the Battlefords River Valley, travelling back through time at one of the community`s many museums, or experiencing world class art at the Allen Sapp Gallery. In its third year running, the NB International Street Performer Festival is still a first of its kind for the province. Held over three days (this summer July 29 – 31), the event brings performers from around the world to downtown North Battleford for a weekend spectacle of world class entertainment, food, and art. The Festival is free of charge and takes place over a span of almost two blocks in the city’s downtown core. The Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival is held annually in the Battlefords. Hosted at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford on July 15 – 17, the event incorporates a wide array of visually stunning booths and displays. In its 43rd year and continuing to flourish, this longest running craft market offers jewelry, pottery, clothing, visual arts, turned wood, stained and fused glass, sculpture in metal, stone and glass, and continued on page 22 ››

It features a midway provided by West Coast Amusements, grandstand activities with a featured destruction derby and fireworks, and all the exhibition items and activities you would expect from a four day carnival experience. This year’s Northwest Territorial Days will take place on August 16 – 19. Included in the festivities is the 129th Annual Northwest Territorial Days Parade, held on August 15, which takes place along a parade route through the heart of North Battleford. On July 5-7 the Battlefords will be the host of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association 55+ Provincial Games. Incorporating all Sports and Culture districts

22

from across the province, competitors in these games will have the opportunity to advance to nationals in Brampton, Ontario in August. The three day event will include events such as golf, bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, pickle ball, Kaiser, poetry and short story writing, swimming, Scrabble, bocce, whist, bank shuffleboard, 8 ball, slo pitch, track and field and tennis. Western Development Museum will host its annual Those Were the Days summer festival on August 6-7. This major event features live threshing demonstrations, chili cook off, barbeque show down, parade of power, and much more. Held along the streets of the WDM’s life size simulation town called the Heritage Village, this event is a spectacle and exciting tourist attraction for children and adults alike. There is an abundance of food and delights for travellers to make a full day of this annual event.

Get ready for a fun-filled family day featuring bouncy castles, a bungee pull, old fashioned games and much more. Want to know what life was like back in the 1880’s? From the ring of the blacksmith’s hammer to the alluring aromas of the Victorian officer’s kitchen, including the power and roar of black powder cannon and rifle demonstrations, Fort Fest 2016 is a must attend event for Saskatchewan tourists. Held at the Fort Battleford National Historic Site in the Town of Battleford, this annual major event takes place on July 16 and is a great summer tradition. For more information on the Battlefords and major events offered for tourists please visit Destination Battlefords online at www.battlefords.ca, phone toll free at 1-800-243-0394, direct message on twitter to @battlefords, or message the Destination Battlefords Facebook Page.

Awaken your adventurous side on a zipline, shoot a round of golf on a championship course, take in the beautiful river valley views or become a Parks Canada Xplorer. Read on for the great variety of experiences waiting in the rolling parklands of Central Saskatchewan.

T

he annual Back to Batoche Days celebrates the culture borne of the fur trade. Take in traditional jigging and fiddling contests, chuckwagon races and watch for the colourful sashes of the traditional Métis garb. One of many Trails of 1885 sites, Batoche marks the turbulent times of the fur trade and the North West Mounted Police’s historic march west. See www.trailsof1885.com for the full story. During your visit to Batoche, step back in time to pump water, push a Red River cart and use a wash board just like Métis families would have done 100 years ago. Try the traditional fare of bannock from the concession, and sign the kids up to be-

come Xplorers and earn a Parks Canada souvenir dog tag. Parks Canada staff will be in authentic costume waiting to share their stories of the events that changed history here. Climb aboard the new Batoche Shuttle for a ride to the East Village and where Louis Riel’s provisional government of Saskatchewan was headquartered. Enjoy the scenic views of the rolling prairies and aspen forest while riding to the former village and by the banks of the river. The shuttle is an open air and wheelchair accessible bus that gives visitors with limited mobility a chance to experience the site. Visit an original Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post at the Fort Carlton Provincial Park. The post operated between 1810

and 1885 and shows the rugged days from before Canada was a country. Tour the reconstructed palisade, fur and provisions store and tipi encampment. Just outside the fort is the North Saskatchewan River and the original Carlton Trail, where you can still see ruts left by Red River carts. The Fort Battleford National Historic Site also hosts the kids’ Xplorers program, geocaching and a green-powered visitor centre. Tour original buildings and reconstructed stockades and bastions, interpretive display in the barracks and learn of the siege of Battleford. Watch for special events like ghost walks, day camps and discovery booklets. continued on page 26 ››

›› continued from page 25 The growth and change of the times came to a head during the 1885 North West Resistance, and this series of Trails of 1885 sites preserve the stories and culture of the times. Try your luck at the Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford where games include blackjack, roulette and Texas Hold-Em. Take a break at the gaming floor bar or visit the restaurant and lounge. Guest rooms feature family, jacuzzi or extended-stay suites and a spectacular penthouse suite for those special occasions. Pack your bathing suits for a trip to the aquatic centre in the Credit Union Complex. It is fun for all ages with waves, waterslides and a lazy river and

zero-depth entry for the little ones. Just north of town is the Blue Mountain Outdoor Adventure Centre, where nature and adventure meet. Keep an eye out for wandering mule deer, rabbits or even great horned owls over the sprawling tract of rolling hills. Visitors who are looking for a faster pace can take on the 500 metre zip-line over the prairie valley, the three-storey high climbing wall, get in on a game of paint ball or ask about canoe and paddleboat rentals. The log chalet is wheelchair accessible and includes a kitchen and modern bathrooms. Cabin and camping accommodations are available. North Battleford Golf and Country

Club is one of the provinces most scenic and challenging courses. The course boasts manicured greens, three tee boxes and measures more than 6,600 yards from the back tee. Take in one of Saskatchewan’s finest views along the glacier-carved Battlefords River Valley. It follows the North Saskatchewan Rive and features King Hill Lookout, the Battleford Wildlife Federation Interpretive Centre and Finlayson Island which is a popular hiking destination reached by arched bridges. A visit to the Hudson Bay area is a must if your perfect summer vacation includes a fresh fish dinner. The town is surrounded by lakes, rivers and stocked ponds. Fish

a nearby river like Fir or Armit for brook trout, or try one of many lakes for walleye, perch and northern pike. Just east of town is a stocked trout pond. Don’t leave town without checking out the Al Mazur Heritage Park’s wonderful depiction of a 1909 village. The Tea House is a nod to the charm of pioneer tea time and has a collection of 1,500 matching cups and saucers - one of Canada’s biggest. See the early letter press in the print shop, take the kids to the CN Station for a train ride around the park and stop by the many other village shops. Thought it’s most famous for a world-record ice fishing catch, Tobin Lake is also

an outstanding fishing lake all year. Access the water from the Nipawin Regional Park and cast your line for walleye and northern pike. The Nipawin Great Northern Pike Festival runs from June to September and attracts anglers from across North America. The Saskatchewan Premier Walleye Cup is held on the river section of the lake and features an impressive prize purse and scenery to match. The Fish for Freedom Ladies Tournament is a provincial favourite that benefits women’s health and local charities. Golfers will want to take in the Evergreen Golf Course where finely manicured greens and rolling hills make this a pleasant

yet challenging round of golf. The area has a full selection of places to stay from cabins to campgrounds and houseboats to resorts. Before you leave the Nipawin area, a look at the Nipawin & District Living Forestry Museum is in order. A steam-powered mill produces lumber and lathe work and displays include the CPR station, church, school house and trapper’s cabin on the 14acre site by the river. Take the iconic Nipawin Bridge across the Saskatchewan River. Built in 1928, the crooked old bridge spanned the Saskatchewan River gorge and opened trade and settlement. continued on page 28 ››

Just south of here is the Francois Finley Hydro Electric Dam and the Vista Point Observation Terrace. The station was built in 1985 and forms Codette Lake at the west end of Nipawin. The Vista Point observation terrace is a lovely spot for a picnic and some landscape photos. Head west and keep your eye out for the world’s largest bunnock - horse ankle for the

newcomer. The massive bunnock is a tribute to the ancient game of the same name, and it also doubles as the area tourism booth. The annual Macklin World Bunnock Championship Challenge attracts more than 300 teams and many more spectators. This little-known German/Russian game is a traditional competition where ankle bones are thrown. The weekend celebrations include a street dance, craft shows and kids’ events like carnival and rides, pony rides, magic show, bouncy houses and face painting.

The Macklin Lake Regional Park is just minutes south of town and has a golf course, beach, playground, shower and change house and five official-sized ball diamonds. In town, the historical bells of St. Anthony’s church are a must-see. In 1914, these three bells were produced at the Bell Foundry of Fritz Hamm in Augsburg, Germany. They weigh in at an impressive 544 kilograms (2,000 pounds). Community celebrations, room to fish and hike, rustic country and city breaks await in beautiful Central Saskatchewan.

Saskatoon Local Treasures, Openly Shared

riven by a youthful energy – the city has the lowest median age in all of Canada – just one visit to Saskatoon will leave you wanting to come back for more. Learn about the city’s roots by exploring the 6000 year old history at the gathering place of the indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains at Wanuskewin Heritage Park just 15 minutes from the city centre. Hear their stories as you wander the indoor and outdoor exhibits and trails, and see how their culture evolved as they lived off the land. Your heart will pound to the beat of the drums and your spirit will be lifted by the dancing. There is even the opportunity to camp overnight in a tipi and bake bannock over an open fire. Step back in time at the Western Development Museum, named by Trip Advisor as the top attraction in Saskatchewan. A walk through Boomtown, an indoor replica of

buildings as they would have existed in 1910 in the Prairies, will show what life would have been like in Saskatoon in days gone by. Saskatoon’s natural history is equally as intriguing. This is a city on the edge of nature. Spanned by seven bridges, the scenic South Saskatchewan River flows right through it. Explore the 80km of Meewasin River Valley Trails that run alongside the river by biking, walking or jogging, and include a stop at the free outdoor gym by River Landing for a workout with a view. Along the banks of the river valley, discover how alive the prairies are with pelicans, gulls, geese and other migratory birds, while exploring the urban parkland. Venture onto the water by canoe, kayak or paddleboard, or relax on the Prairie Lily riverboat cruise, where the captain and crew will entertain with tales of the river and valley area. In an area just west of the river is Riversdale, a historic neighbourhood that has

Supplement to The Western Producer

recently been revitalized and is now full of unique local shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and some of the best people-watching in town. The Saskatoon Farmer’s Market has found a permanent home in Riversdale, and is often bustling with local farmers, vendors and buskers that give a taste of what Saskatoon’s excellent food, craft and arts scene has to offer. For those still hungry, there are many popular places to fill your belly or whet your whistle in Saskatoon. For fine dining, Ayden Kitchen & Bar, centrally located in downtown Saskatoon by Canada’s Top Chef season one winner Dale Mackay, serves delicious homegrown ingredients from their globally-inspired menu. His new restaurant Little Grouse (on the Prairie), that opened in February, has been met with rave reviews as well. continued on page 36 ››

›› continued from page 35 The popular Broadway neighbourhood boasts many places to eat and drink including Calories, a long-time neighbourhood favourite, serving unique local dishes as well as Saskatoon staples like Saskatoon berry pie. For a memorable local experience, take a tour at Lucky Bastard Distillery and sample their hand-crafted spirits and liqueurs. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet the lucky bastard himself and hear his entertaining success story. For little travelers, the new PotashCorp Playland at Kinsmen Park is always a big hit, with its large yellow ferris wheel, merrygo-round, train and adjacent playground. A short drive from Kinsmen Park, is the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo, where you can get up close to a massive prairie bison or fish for trout in the nearby pond. Saskatoon has a lively arts and culture

36

scene, with festivals and events all year long. Summer kicks off officially in Saskatoon when the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival cranks up the music around town late June. This year will be the 30th anniversary of the festival, the second largest of its kind in Western Canada. Thousands of fans groove and sing along each year at the Delta Bessborough Gardens Mainstage to jazz, blues, funk, pop and world music by world-class artists. The annual PotashCorp Fringe Theatre and Street Festival has taken over Broadway every August since 1989, bringing theatre to the streets. Vendors, buskers and actors entertain audiences of all ages for this highly-anticipated week-long festival. The fall season brings the arts to the streets of Saskatoon. The Riversdale neighbourhood hosts Nuit Blanche, a popular nighttime arts festival all along 20th Street every September, and will have you wanting

to stay up well past bedtime. There is no shortage of venues in Saskatoon to check out the variety of events all year long. Village Guitar & Amp, Amigos and The Capitol, are all great places to take in the lively local music scene. Founded in 1974, the Persephone Theatre has become one of the largest arts theatres in Canada, hosting events and theatre productions year-round. Coming soon to Saskatoon early in 2017, is the highly-anticipated Remai Modern Gallery, which will showcase local and regional modern artists, as well as will be home to the world’s largest Picasso linocut collection, sure to attract art enthusiasts from around the world for a visit to Saskatoon. From the young to the young at heart, there is so much to see and do in Saskatoon. Visit Saskatoon and experience the many local treasures this vibrant, growing city has to offer.

JULY 8-9: Moosomin Rodeo In 2016, the Moosomin Rodeo Grounds at Bradley Park will be the site of the fastpaced Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA)-approved rodeo, sanctioned by the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA). Bobby Stevens, vice president of the Moosomin Rodeo Committee, says this year’s rodeo features all the major CCA events, including ladies barrel racing and junior barrel racing. You will also be wowed by the up-and-coming novice bull riding and junior steer riding competitors. Don’t miss seeing the Bucking Bull Futurity, which is happening after the parade. The Futurity is a competition for two year old bulls that compete against each other, bucking for four to six seconds, with a 25 pound dummy on their back. Stevens says this is the fifth year for this event at the rodeo, and he’s expecting about 30 bulls from Saskatchewan and Manitoba to participate in the Futurity. “It’s a great event,” says Stevens. “We are always striving to do different things to make it better.” For this year’s rodeo, organizers have incorporated junior steer riding

and novice bull riding to get local kids involved and grow the sport. After watching the action on the rodeo grounds, people are invited to visit the beer gardens Friday night and the cabaret Saturday night. Extend the fun by setting up your tent at Moosomin Regional Park, located 14 km south of Moosomin. With picnic sites and a large sandy beach, it is the perfect vacation getaway. For more rodeo information: call Bobby Stevens at 306-861-7471.

JULY 20-22: Maple Creek Cowtown Pro-Rodeo For three days in July, Maple Creek becomes cowboy central, with rodeo stars from BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and places in the United States competing for cash prizes. “This is a real classy show,” explains “Slim” Needham, president of the Maple Creek Cowtown Pro-Rodeo Committee. It started out 15 years ago as part of the CCA route, and is now one of three pro rodeos held in Saskatchewan. Monies won here help contestants qualify for the Canadian Finals in Edmonton, and then on to the World’s. You will marvel at the skill of the participants as they compete in every major rodeo event – from saddle bronc riding to steer wrestling and bare back riding. Needham says this is a very

family-friendly event, “good clean entertainment,” with a full schedule of activities the younger crowd will enjoy such as mutton busting and wild pony night. This is also the site of the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA) finals for barrel racing. All the action will take place at the Maple Creek High Chaparral Arena. For more information: contact Slim Needham at 306-661-8184 or go to http://www.maplecreek.ca/virtual-visitors-centre/annual-festivals-events/maple-creek-cowtown-prorodeo.

July 23-24: Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo – Kennedy , SK Held at the Kennedy Rodeo Grounds, this year will mark the 84th annual edition of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo. This Canadian Pro Rodeo Association (CPRA) and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) sanctioned event draws huge crowds from all around Canada and the USA. And with good reason. As one of the four pro rodeos east of Alberta, the contestants are well-seasoned athletes, coming from the Calgary Stampede, Canadian Finals and Nations in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tye Cancade, president of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo Association, says the rodeo has reached the 350 contestant mark

DID YOU KNOW? The Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA) was founded in 1963 with rodeos happening throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Western States. It has grown to be the largest semi-pro rodeo association in Canada, sanctioning over 60 rodeos. The Canadian Cowboys Association headquarters are located in Regina, Saskatchewan. Memberships are rising over 900, and the more than 50 events annually draw in over 20,000 spectators each year.

over two years. “These are people with great skills from Canada, the USA and as far away as New Zealand,” he says. They’ll be competing in all of the main rodeo events so be prepared for extreme excitement and action says Cancade. Hosting the rodeo for so many years has allowed new generations of local competitors to get their start in Kennedy. They can hone their skills in special novice classes in saddle bronc, bare back and junior steer riding for youth 17 to 21 years of age. A community favourite at the rodeo is the parade on Saturday. There’s also a trade show and a demolition derby scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. For more information: contact Tye Cancade at 306-736-7338. (Organizers are working on a new website for the event at http://www.moosemountainrodeo.com; it should be ready before the new rodeo season begins.)

OCTOBER 19-22: Canadian Finals Rodeo – Swift Current, SK The City of Swift Current, Canadian

Cowboys Association (CCA), and Swift Current Agricultural & Exhibition Association are partnering to present the 53rd Annual Canadian Finals Rodeo at the IPlex in Swift Current October 19-22, 2016. This is the first year of a five-year commitment to hold the finals in this city. According to Lenora Bells, event development coordinator with the Swift Current Ag & Ex Association, you can expect to see the best of the best on the CCA circuit at this event, as well as the top stock, to make this one of the largest rodeo events in Canada.   Over four days, visitors will have the opportunity to see seven major events (saddle bronc, bareback, tie down roping, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing, team roping and bull riding) and two junior events (junior ladies barrel racing and junior bull riding). There will be 12 competitors in each event vying for top title in their perspective category. In addition to the traditional rodeo performances and competitions, visitors can take in the trade show (Octo-

ber 19-21) with western themed products and commercial exhibits. On the Saturday night is the cabaret featuring toe-tapping live music.   It’s family friendly entertainment that will thrill both young and old. And, it’s also a place where a new generation of rodeo stars will get their training. “There are a lot of rodeos that happen around our community – from Herbert, Maple Creek, Shaunavon, Kyle and Val Marie,” explains Bells. “We’re seeing a lot of new talent coming up the ranks. They’re going to be inspired by some of the rodeo heroes on the circuit.” Bells says they are looking for more volunteers to help them make this a world-class event, which was formerly part of Agribition in Regina. For more information or to volunteer: contact Lenora Bells at 306-773-2944 or go to www.swiftcurrentex. com or www.canadiancowboys.ca. Ticket prices have not yet been set, so check their website for more details.

ind your happy dance at the new Elk Ridge Eco-Adventures. Thrill seekers can sail through the treetops on a zipline, try their skill on the slacklines or enjoy the atmosphere at base camp. Talented and friendly guides make it a priority to know guests’ names and help them get the most of their adventure. Tours sail high above the forest floor on seven different ziplines that range from 270 to 700 feet. The sky bridges and platforms wind through the boreal forest and border Elk Ridge’s championship golf course. Gather your strength and concentration for an attempt on the slack line. Nylon webbing is strung between two trees and provides a stretchable line for walking, bouncing and other tricks. Little ones love the kids’ zipline where a scaled-down version awaits. This is a second location for the nature-loving and adventurous crew at Eco Adventures 306 Collective and is a won-

derful addition to the area. The crew supports environmental eduction, sustainability and runs carbon-neutral operations. Their awards shelf is full; excellence in innovation, small business of the year and commitment to visitors, you name it and chances are they’ve won it. All in all, a nice fit Elk Ridge, which has been recognized by the Audubon Society for its care and management of the forest. Known for fine dining, a broad range of accommodations, excellence as an events venue, championship golf and endless selection of outdoor activities, Elk Ridge is a true vacation destination. The nearby Prince Albert National Park has nature activities too many to list and the charming townsite of Waskesiu. Stop at the Visitor Centre where park staff can help you choose the right activities, tell you about the latest events and mention any wildlife sightings. Ask for the Prince Albert National

Park Bird checklist and you can keep an eye out for the 243 bird species that have been recorded here. The park takes in aspen parkland, grassland, boreal forest and tamarack bogs. This range of habitat supports the wide variety of both flora and fauna. Take the kids to story time in the tipi or to play “Match the Poop” at the Nature Centre. The centre is housed in one of Waskesiu’s many historic buildings and features many hands-on exhibits and interpretive events. It is open from mid-May to September. With artifacts dating back to the park’s origins in 1928, the Waskesiu Heritage Museum displays and photographs are joined by the outdoor exhibits like the rail cart from the Kingsmere Portage. If you catch a rain day in Waskesiu, the Twin Pines Cinema features digital picture and runs daily matinees. Take a scenic driving tour in any weather to spot some wildlife. ern shore of Waskesiu Lake and past many points of interest and picnic areas. Kingsmere passes through spruce forest along the northern shore of Waskesiu Lake. Lakeview Drive is commonly referred to as the Scenic Route and leads through the transition from boreal forest to aspen parkland. The Waskesiu Recreation Association hosts all ages recreation activities beginning each July. Jump in on a game of softball, bowling, beach volleyball or let the kids enjoy craft activities. The Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce & Recreation Association rents equipment for lawn bowling, basketball, disc golf, badminton and so many other sports. Canoe past nesting grounds of red-necked grebes and keep a watch out for common loons, white pelicans and bald eagles. Grey Owl’s cabin can be accessed by canoe, and the Bladebone Canoe Route is a multi-day trip with some challenging portages along the way. Ask at the Visitor Centre for detailed descriptions of these canoe routes. Fixed roof lodgings range from rustic cabins to four-star resorts. Camping options include wilderness camping, front-country sites and the oTENTiks in Beaver Glen Campground. These tent/ cabin hybrids have a raised floor and are warmed by propane heaters. They sleep six and have a dining space inside and an outdoor picnic table and firepit. A shared kitchen shelter, washroom with shower and drinking water are nearby.

The Narrow Hills area, with dozens upon dozens of stocked lakes, is hands-down the best fly fishing around. Rainbow, cutthroat, brown, splake, tiger and brook trout are joined by northern pike, walleye and yellow perch. In the Narrow Hills Provincial Park are 25 lakes, and the surrounding area boasts another 30-plus lakes. Fishing is best done from the water in a belly boat, pontoon, canoe or kayak, as the forests extend to the shoreline in most spots. Family camping is found at Lower Fishing Lake. There are boat and canoe rentals, a grocery store and a beach. Cabins, motel rooms and a lodge with services is found at Upper Fishing Lake. Not only does this park offer some superb trout fishing, its natural beauty is unrivalled. Explore the Gem Lakes, the many hiking trails and scenic driving routes. Find some of the world’s best wilderness canoeing on the Churchill River system. This rugged, 1600 km stretch includes both Nistowiak Falls and Otter Rapids. Canoe

outfitters can guide you through this ultimate adventure, or self-guided canoeists are encouraged to register at a Ministry of Environment Office. Receive a Saskatchewan Voyageur Certificate as a keepsake of your canoe experience. Many parts of the Churchill River system require advanced canoeing skills, but the Otter Rapids are much more accessible. The scenery is incredible, the water is clear and the untouched wilderness the churning waters are must-see. Take your holiday photos from the bridge that spans the river. These rapids carry the entire volume of the Churchill River through a 0.5km chute. Devil Lake has camping or there are fixed-roof accommodations in Missinipe. community kitchen. Also held at the Ness Creek festival site is the Northern Lights Bluegrass & Old Tyme Music Festival, Backwards Ness, Country at the Creek and the Elysium Music & Arts Festival. Even when there isn’t an epic festival happening, the Nesslin Lake Campground is a popular spot. There is a corner store for supplies and canoe rentals, and staff can help arrange ecology walks, wildlife viewing and more. The Big River Regional Park has two campgrounds. Cowan Lake Campground is located at the end of Main Street and has lovely views of the water. The Community Centre Campground is the north side of town and features showers, laundry facilities, ball diamonds, horseshoe and sand pits. Find adventure, find solitude, find comfort in nature; the rugged beauty of Northern Saskatchewan with its clear water and abundant wildlife continues to inspire its visitors to be stewards of nature.
