MANITOBA AG DAYS SHOW GUIDE 2017

SUPPLEMENT TO THE WESTERN PRODUCER

On behalf of the Government of Canada, congratulations to Manitoba Ag Days on its 40th anniversary and greetings to all visitors. With the latest agricultural tools, equipment, and technology on display, as well as a host of excellent speakers, it’s no surprise that this event attracts over 500 national and international exhibitors and up to 50,000 visitors. Be sure to check out the Inventor’s Showcase, for example, for new ideas and products to help your business grow. Innovation is one of the Government’s key priorities to keep agriculture strong and growing in Manitoba and across Canada along with trade, market development, food processing and sustainability. Manitoba’s agricultural sector plays a strong role in keeping Canada’s economy strong. I am proud to work with Minister Eichler as we invest $176 million in costshared programming in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federalprovincial-territorial policy framework to

advance the agriculture industry. The Government is working with the provinces and territories, and listening to farmers, food processors and Canadians, to develop the next national agricultural policy framework to begin in 2018. The new framework will be geared to the unique needs of farmers and processors in Manitoba and across the country, and to building Canada’s success overall on the world-stage. Manitoba Ag Days is an exciting event to launch the New Year, to celebrate Manitoba’s dynamic agriculture and agrifood industry, and to inspire innovations on the farm. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this event a growing success over the past four decades!

On behalf of Manitoba Agriculture and the Province of Manitoba, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Manitoba Ag Days 2017. This is a special year as Ag Days celebrates its 40th anniversary. Ag Days has come a long way since its inaugural event in 1978, which began as the Weed Fair. Today, Ag Days is one of western Canada’s premier farm shows. Producers and industry convene at Ag Days annually to discover the latest technologies and equipment, meet with industry experts and commodity suppliers, and take in some good old fashioned networking to regenerate before spring seeding. Manitoba’s agriculture sector has a rich history and is a key area of economic focus with the potential for new jobs and growth. Our hard-working farmers are innovative and resilient. They respond to challenges with solutions that allow the sector to thrive. Manitoba’s economic growth relies on a robust agriculture, agri-food and agri-product

sector. I encourage you to visit the Manitoba Agriculture booth and speak with knowledgeable staff on the programs and services the department offers to enhance your bottom line and leverage the opportunities available to you. After 40 years, Ag Days continues to be a place of discovery. It is a place to explore equipment, innovation, technology, and to learn the latest in crop and livestock production, and farm business management. Thank you to the organizing committee. Increased display space is a welcome addition this year. An event of this scale takes a lot of effort and planning to execute and I thank you for your commitment in planning Ag Days year after year.

Enjoy the show, and be sure to stop by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada exhibit!

Enjoy Ag Days 2017.

Welcome to the Manitoba Ag Days 40th Anniversary Show! We are very excited to present to you Canada’s Largest Indoor Farm Show; a show filled to capacity featuring the latest in equipment, technology and information. Ag Days has always been known for being the first show of the year; it truly is “Where the Ag Year Begins”! This year promises to be our best show ever – we have added on 19,200 ft2 of show space which means we are using absolutely every square inch of the Keystone Centre that is available to us, and we still have a waiting list! We are very proud of the fact that our show is 100% Pure Farm. This means that all of our exhibits are required to be of an agricultural nature so farm business is the focus. With over 550 exhibitors spread over 10 acres of indoor space, this is truly your one-stop shop for all of your agricultural needs. We thank all of our exhibitors for staying true to our 100% Pure Farm Motto – it makes us a very unique trade show and one we are very proud to be a part of. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters of Manitoba Ag Days; our show would not be the success it is without your partnerships! You will find our sponsors mentioned on various pages in this guide; please take the time to thank them when you visit them at their displays! Our board has spent a lot of time and effort bringing in our most profound speaking line up ever! There is not a single session that won’t have you wanting more. We have a real focus on agronomy this year, plus business management, marketing, and success stories from our industry. We also have a focus on Farm Safety! Farm Safety is extremely important to our show and our board, so we have decided to open up our Farm Safety Zone to all of the exhibitors at Ag Days 2017.The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association is launching their new mobile grain entrapment trailer at our show.

We are thrilled and honored to be the first trade show that showcases this very prestigious and much needed training tool for Western Canada. You may notice that we have moved our exhibitors around this year, so please take some time to plan out your days in advance. We have an interactive map on our website that is very mobile friendly to help you locate the exhibitor you are looking for. Between the exhibitor movements in the show, the extra square footage, and this years’ incredible speaking line up, you may want to visit the show all three days. You will not be disappointed! We are going to be using the hash-tag #agdays17, so follow along on Twitter and Facebook and we will keep you updated. At the show, you will notice the exhibitors participating in our NOSTALGIA COMPETITION – they have been challenged to bring something “old” to Ag Days this year whether that be an old implement, an old tool or maybe even an old show ribbon. There is an opportunity for all of our exhibitors to win a substantial cash prize for participating, and if they donate their winnings to a charity, Manitoba Ag Days will match their donation! As for the patrons, if we see you wearing something NOSTALGIC at our show we will reward you with a 40th Anniversary gift. Join in, let’s have some fun! It’s time to celebrate and kick off 2017 in style. Speaking of kicking things off, be sure to join us on Tuesday January 17th at the Roadhouse in the Canad Inns where the Canad Inns is supplying a breakfast for a minimum charge of $5, with all proceeds going to Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba! We look forward to seeing you at our 40th Anniversary Show. Brad Crammond & David Laudin Co-Chairmen, Manitoba Ag Days

1:15 PM 2016 proved to be a challenging year on several canola disease fronts. One disease that has been of increasing concern across the Prairies is blackleg. This silent yield robber is frequently confused with other canola diseases. This results in lost opportunities to manage the disease in field, and allows losses to be misdiagnosed. This presentation will cover diagnostics of blackleg symptoms compared to other canola diseases, along with best management practices and a new resistance stewardship method to help reduce blackleg infections in canola.

Angela Santiago, Co-founder / CEO, The Little Potato Company Angela Santiago and her father built the Little Potato Company from, quite literally a bathtub full of freshly washed Creamer potatoes delivered to local farmers markets by car to now having stores across Canada and in all 50 states. Sprouting from an idea to introduce Creamers to North America from the Netherlands, the first crop was hand grown, harvested, washed and delivered to local farmer markets in Edmonton, AB and now includes a large network of carefully selected growers. Home cooks and chefs alike have embraced these delicious new small potatoes and the company expanded. Early next year the company will open its first US processing plant to help meet growing demand across North America. Angela Santiago will share the company story and the lessons she and her team have learned in creating and championing an entirely new produce category for Creamers.

Farm Transition - Panel Discussion

Glen Blahey, Agricultural Health & Safety Specialist, Canadian Agricultural Safety Association

Tere Stykalo, Regional Ag Leader, MNP LLP

Recognizing and understanding the potential impact of agricultural workplace hazards is a key business risk management strategy. With an ever increasing volume of grain being handled and stored on Canadian farms, producers need to enhance their health and safety risk management strategies. The Canadian Ag Safety Association’s BEGRAINSAFE program is intended to stimulate safer practices and procedures for grain handling and storage.

Every farm operation that hopes to succeed for another generation will have to go through some type of management and ownership transition no matter what. Tere Stykalo, Regional Ag Leader, from MNP will facilitate a discussion with a panel of farmers who have or who are currently going through their own farm’s succession plan. Come hear real life examples from the perspective of both the incoming and outgoing generations as they work through this challenging process themselves.

Weed Survey & More

Scott Day, Agronomist, Fall Line Capital / Producer, Treelane Farms Ltd.

Dr. Jeanette Gaultier, Weed Specialist, Manitoba Agriculture

Scott will be sharing his experiences as part of a farmland investment and management company based out of San Francisco, USA. Fall Line Capital invests in farmland across the USA with the intent of improving the land through better agronomy, installing irrigation and drainage, encouraging unique crops and implementing conservation ag practices wherever possible. Our goal is to work with local farmer to manage our farms and do whatever is needed to improve soil quality while maximizing income. Join Scott as he highlights some of the company’s investments in the latest new ag technologies.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ag Days, Jeanette will review shifts in weeds populations across Manitoba since 1970. This presentation will include results from the 2016 general weed survey. Shifts in weed populations (or a lack thereof) will be related to changes in agronomic practices and innovations over the years with a discussion on the impact to Manitoba farmers.

Big Data & Precision Ag - Panel Discussion Brenda Tjaden Lepp, Co-Founder / CEO, FarmLink Marketing Solutions Wade Barnes, President / CEO, Farmers Edge Mitch Rezansoff, Integrated Solutions Manager, Enns Brothers Join us for a panel discussion on big data and precision agriculture. The panel will explore some burning questions such as: How can we use the data we are collecting on our farms? Has it improved productivity, profitability and marketing? Who owns and controls the data you are collecting? Learn about different ways of integrating farm management decisions using your own information.

In this presentation, Dr. Gulden will look at how weed management systems on farms today, although simplified and quite effective, can result in unexpected longer term consequences. Herbicide weed resistance hit farms hard in the early 90’s and we must remember the lessons learned when pest control products like herbicides are easy and inexpensive to use. So what are some of the causes that we must beware of? Are they different than say 25 years ago? Some of those consequences may be lurking in the background, ready to strike an unaware producer. Dr. Gulden will highlight what some of those consequences are and how to manage the weed control resources available to crop producers today in order to prevent costly mistakes from happening.

UAVs in the Sky - What You Need to Know Matthew Johnson, Owner, M3 Aerial Productions UAVs are becoming more popular every day, and the applications for their use are growing at the same rate. There are many misconceptions about the use of UAVs, as people often tend to think of them more as toys than as aircraft. The fact is, a UAV operator is called a “pilot” because they are at the controls of an aircraft that shares the skies with planes carrying human beings. There are many applications in agriculture for UAVs which will be discussed, including NDVI and Digital Elevation Modeling, however, we will also focus on the importance of understanding the regulations, limitations, and safe practices for operating UAVs commercially.

Before selective herbicides were available, growers suppressed weeds with delayed seeding, pre- and postseeding tillage, summer fallow, forage grass and legume rotations and fall-seeded winter cereal crops. Later, as rotations became less diverse and selective herbicides were repeatedly applied, weed resistance to herbicides started to build rapidly. With herbicides being a relatively non-renewable resources, alternative weed control methods are urgently required before the utility of precious herbicide tools is severely compromised or lost. Combining practices such as crop rotation, planting competitive crop cultivars, silage production, using higher than normal seeding rates and adopting harvest weed seed control techniques such as chaff collection will be discussed as integrated weed control tactics that can be effective and are important for cropping system sustainability.

Harvesting the Power of Storytelling

Sprayers and the Unfolding Spraying Technology Revolution

Terry O’Reilly, Host/Writer, Under The Influence, CBC Radio

Tom Wolf, Owner, Agrimetrix Research & Training

Every industry must have a compelling story to tell. Stories help differentiate your industry, your brand, your farm and your product. Turning good stories into marketing helps educate consumers and can separate fact from myth in the marketplace. In the world of food and farming, smart messaging helps connect the public to farmers. Knowing how to tell a marketing story can help communicate intangible elements like trust, confidence and value. Join veteran adman and radio host Terry O’Reilly as he breaks the art of storytelling down, shows how to harvest stories from your business and how to package those stories into powerful marketing that wins hearts and dollars.

Pesticide application over the past 60 years has been dominated by the hydraulic nozzle. Recent heightened concerns about spray drift and product performance have brought innovative application methods back to the forefront. This presentation will discuss the latest advances in the state of the art of pesticide application, including a forecast of technologies that are in the pipeline.

Prudent usage of antimicrobials by all of us will go along ways to controlling resistance. Producers will learn areas where we are overusing antibiotics, where there is no need to use antimicrobials, where different antimicrobials could be used and some definite no-nos. Preventative treatment such as vaccinating to minimize sickness will also be discussed. Overuse could mean excessive dose, excessive time frame or given to animals unnecessarily. Pain control has really been brought to the forefront with the beef code of practice. This presentation will outline areas producers are using pain control in cattle production and the new products that are available as well as the benefits that result.

2:45 PM Record Rally, Record Decline - Now What? Brian Perillat, Manager/Senior Analyst, Canfax

This Canfax presentation will provide an industry update and insights into the Canadian cattle market. Although market signals have improved, the Canadian industry remains relatively cautious. Cattle markets have strengthened since the spring of 2013, but there are still regulatory and market factors that are negatively impacting the market. The longer term outlook remains positive, and an update will be provided on key factors to watch, and how current market conditions will affect each supply chain player differently. Mother Nature at Her Finest Thursday, January 19th — AM FCC Theatre 9:00 AM Sclerotinia - The Other White Combine Keith Gabert, Agronomy Specialist, Canola Council of Canada Sclerotinia remains the most unpredictably consistent yield robbing disease on the Canadian Prairies. Recommended management strategies for sclerotinia have changed little in the last few decades, yet consistent moisture during flowering in 2016 drove this disease to record levels in many prairie canola fields. Are there improvements available in the way we manage this disease? Where is the industry at on predictive disease forecasting, petal tests, impact of crop rotation, or improvements in fungicide application? At fungicide decision time in 2017 is there any better option than checking if your pant legs are wet as you walk through a canola crop coming into flower?

9:45 AM Navigating the Fungal Jungle: Disease Update Holly Derksen, Field Crop Pathologist, Manitoba Agriculture The 2016 season brought many challenges to producers, not the least of which was increased disease pressure due to wet conditions. In many cases, the “usual” management practices were not enough. This presentation will summarize the disease survey results from 2016 and attempt to predict what could be in store for 2017.

Congratulations on 40 years of showcasing and supporting agriculture

10:15 AM Protect the Quality of Your Stored Grain from Insect Infestations Brent Elliott, Infestation Control Officer & Sanitation Officer, Canadian Grain Commission Stored grain insects are a perpetual concern in on-farm grain. Many of the stored-product pests found in Canada are able to survive well in grain bins that are not cooled and some are able to withstand substantial periods of cold weather as well. The trend to storing grain through the summer season brings additional considerations to the table. Considerations for storage and monitoring will be discussed.

11:00 AM Will the Weather Extremes Persist on the Prairies? Drew Lerner, Senior Agricultural Meteorologist, Weather World, Inc.

FCC is proud to support Manitoba Ag Days and looks forward to continuing to work together for years to come. Thank you for all you do for the industry!

Agriculture: From the Ground Up Thursday, January 19th — PM FCC Theatre 1:00 PM New Tillage Techniques Marla Riekman, Soil Management Specialist, Manitoba Agriculture There are so many tillage tools to choose from right now that it can be difficult to decide if and when a farmer should invest in more iron. Vertical tillage, strip tillage, and subsoiling are some of the top tillage techniques being adopted (or considered) by Manitoba farmers. This presentation will review Manitoba data on the benefits and limitations of new tillage tools available.

1:45 PM Controlled Traffic Farming – A Manitoba Experience Adam Gurr, Producer/On Farm Researcher, Agritruth Research Adam will discuss his experiences with Controlled Traffic Farming and share the results from his recently completed on-farm CTF project. He will look at the potential benefits of adopting a CTF system in Manitoba as well as some of the challenges they have encountered along the way.

2:30 PM Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Challenges for IPM in Prairie Agriculture Dr. John Gavloski, Entomologist, Manitoba Agriculture Integrated pest management (IPM) involves using the best mix of control methods for a given pest. Chemical insecticides are a component of IPM, but according to the original definition of IPM are to be used in the manner least disruptive to biological control. Conservation of natural enemies of potential pests is one of the basic components of IPM. Advances in crop breeding, our knowledge of beneficial organisms, and in some instances insecticide selectivity have in many ways made it easier to conserve natural enemies of crop pests. Other changes to cropping systems have improved some aspects of crop production, but at times inadvertently reduce the ability of natural enemies of pests to thrive. Join John as he reviews the challenges to effective IPM.

Benefits of Pulse Crops in the Rotation

The 10 Tax Traps for Succession Planning

John Heard, Crop Nutrition Specialist, Manitoba Agriculture

Matt Bolley, Tax Specialist, MNP LLP

Pulse crops contribute many benefits to Prairie crop rotations. Crops such as soybeans are profitable and increasingly adapted across the Province, which provides disease management benefits when used to lengthen canola – wheat rotation. The nitrogen fixing ability of pulses largely reduces the need for purchased nitrogen inputs, and many but not all provide nitrogen credits to the crops following. The generally low crop residue amounts following pulse crops facilitates reduced till or zero-till production. In drier parts of the Prairies, pulse rotations serve similar functions as summer fallow by contributing to soil N and by using water sparingly.

Succession planning is top of mind for many producers looking to transfer their farming operation to the next generation. There are many ways to implement a succession plan in order to reduce or eliminate taxes, but there are also a number of common tax traps that can frustrate proper succession planning and lead to unnecessary tax being paid by the producer and their estate. Matt will discuss these tax traps and provide solutions to maximize the effectiveness of your succession plan.

Climate Change and Shifts in Crops

Are All Phosphates Created Equal?

Dr. Tom Jensen, Director, North America Program, International Plant Nutrition Institute

Dr. Don Flaten, Professor, University of Manitoba Don’s presentation will focus on the principles of phosphorus (P) fertilizer management and the role of selecting the right source of P for a farm field and crop. From a theoretical viewpoint, there are factors that might improve P efficiency or hurt P efficiency, but in practice, the performance of most sources of commercial fertilizer P is often similar, when tested or considered for conditions that are typical for the Canadian Prairies.

Agriculture always adapts to changes. The main changes of the past have been new crop choices, new tillage practices, crop pest outbreaks, and changes in market commodity prices. Climate changes historically have affected agriculture cropping systems in the past, examples will be given. As the earth is experiencing a warming in climate how this has affected and will affect what crops we can and will grow.

This will be an interactive presentation as the audience will be able to participate in providing the right answer for what micronutrients are, which crops are sensitive to which micronutrient, how micronutrient deficiencies are identified and how the 4R nutrient steward ship principal is applied to micronutrient. A discussion of how micronutrient deficiencies are corrected will follow the examples from research conducted in Western Canada.

MANITOBA AG DAYS SHOW GUIDE 2017

Dr. Mario Tenuta, Professor, University of Manitoba How we manage nitrogen for crop productivity will undergo a dramatic change in the coming years. The need to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils will become as important as yield when considering use of N fertilizers. Yes, you read that right. This presentation is design to understand why nitrogen management will undergo such change. It will also cover the practices you can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining or improving crop yield and efficient use of added nitrogen. The 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework will be used to show what practices of rate, source, timing and placement of N addition in Manitoba are best for reducing nitrous oxide emissions while producing healthy and prolific crops.

Somebody should speak up.

Don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips.

Speak from the heart You live and love ag. Share that love with the world. “Having a conversation with a consumer is actually not as hard as you think. You’re basically telling them what you do.”

Somebody should set the record straight. Somebody should do something.

– Ravi Bathe, Poultry and Berry Producer

Well I’m somebody. You’re somebody. Everyone in ag is somebody. So be somebody who does something. Somebody who speaks from a place of experience, with passion and conviction. Somebody who proudly takes part in food conversations big or small, so our voice is heard. Somebody who tells our story, before someone else does. Somebody who builds consumer trust so our industry can meet the demands of a growing, and very hungry, world.

Be somebody who does something. Be an agvocate.

Go where the conversations are Be an active voice and help shape people’s relationship with ag. “In order for consumers to support and understand us, they need to know us better. The best people to explain this are the people who live agriculture.” – Natacha Lagarde, Maple Syrup Producer

Somebody who shapes people’s relationship with agriculture. It can be done. But it’s a big job that takes co-operation, patience and respect for every voice in the conversation. We need to build lines of communication, not draw lines in the sand. Be somebody who helps everybody see Canadian agriculture as the vital, modern industry it is. Somebody who helps everybody see people in ag for what they are – neighbours, friends, and family who share the same concern everyone does: providing safe, healthy food to the people we love. Our point of view is important. Our story is important. And people want to hear what we have to say. So be somebody who takes, and makes, every opportunity to share it. I’m somebody. You’re somebody. Together, we can tell everybody.

Be open and honest Transparency creates trust, so tell your story. “What do we have to hide? Nothing. I eat the food I produce. If we tell our story honestly, people will trust us.” – Sam Bourgeois, Apple Producer

Being an agvocate is easier than you think and we can help. Visit AgMoreThanEver.ca for resources and tips, and join our community of agvocates from across the country.

“I really like PowerRich because the amount of product to handle is greatly reduced, saving time at seeding by filling less and driving more. There is very little caking in the bin on overwinter storage. Low salt indexes are good for soil health. It is very safe to apply with seed. In 2 years of use I have seen yields up to 65 bu/ac on canola, 65 bu/ac on HRSW with protein levels from 12-14%. I have done in-depth soil testing for 10 years now and will continue to use PowerRich fertilizer.” - Roger Schultz, Waldheim, SK

Never Spill Spout Inc. – Full Bin Alarm - Booth 402 City Square Exhibition Hall Never climb high Grain Bins! Never plug an Auger! Never overfill a Bin! It's not just a FULL BIN ALARM, but also a complete Auger Spout with No-Snag Spout and Nightlight. Too many serious injuries and death occur every year by climbing high Grain Bins. We have more than 8000 sold. Most of the comments we get are: "I haven't had to climb a bin in years". From a SAFTEY perspective, farmers using the Never Spill Spout will never have to climb high bin ladders to visually check grain levels!

Rodono - Booth 469 - 471 City Square Exhibition Hall The operation of normal swings on augers to place them under the hoppers of conventional B-train grain trucks requires many maneuvers by the one guiding the truck into place to unload the grain, and many moves back and forth by the truckers. With our system the swing auger retracts out of place waiting for the truck to pull into place. Once in the right place, which is easy to determine from the previous unload, the swing simply extends hydraulically under the trailer and unloads both hoppers in the one operation. To move to the next trailer, the swing auger is retracted and the truck moves to the position determined by the location of the retracted swing auger. This swing auger reduces the risk of accidentally running over the hopper of a conventional swing, keeps the handler from being near the truck wheels when they are moving into position, and allows the trucker to handle all the unloading by himself. Safety and convenience and reduced manpower requirements are the features of our product.
