playing in the sand, swimming, catching minnows and frogs, roasting wieners over a campfire and possibly some marshmallows to burn and make your fingers gloriously sticky. It was being so tired at the end of the day that you could hardly crawl into bed before your eyes closed. It was heaven! Regional Parks in Saskatchewan can
make this happen for your family! These parks can be situated right next to a village or town, they could be nestled in the middle of the sagebrush, tucked away in a forest, or in a quiet spot near a lake or a creek. Each park is a different size and offers different choices of activities which may include camping, swimming; sports grounds, food services, golf courses and some events host large annual events. Each Saskatchewan Regional Park is a unique vacation destination. They offer a variety of activities including over 60 golf courses, 30 plus swimming pools, numerous stretches of beach, and a variety of playgrounds and hiking trails. experience to many people in their local area, our province and those from outside Saskatchewan. Whether you bring your family, or come alone, you will feel right at home in any one of our parks. With the assistance of provincial funding for capital projects and some municipalities funding their local parks, the facilities at these parks have been improving each year. Many parks have increased the number of campsites or upgraded their existing sites; washrooms and shower buildings have been a priority for improvements or additions across all of the regional parks. They have invested in potable water systems to provide safe, clean drinking water for everyone using their park. They have replaced worn equipment and many
new playground areas have been installed in a large number of the parks. Let’s take a tour of some of the regional parks in Saskatchewan. Ogema Regional Park is located off Highway 13 near Ogema. a stunning destination park awaiting discovery. Northern wilderness plays host to a well developed facility, boosting many amenities for outdoor recreation and camping comfort. Spanning 1600 acres across the entire north end of Brightsand Lake, the park offers campsites set in their own piece of forest. Nature lovers, golfers, fishermen and beach lovers will enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of this “family park.” Campers can enjoy the 28km hiking trail, bringing the hiker through just about every type of habitat the Boreal Forest has to offer. Trails are open to both hikers, and mountain bikers. St. Brieux Regional Park runs along the shore of St. Brieux Lake which is approximately 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, connecting to the larger adjoining Lake Lenore. St. Brieux Lake is spring fed and offers great swimming and excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, and
perch. St. Brieux Park offers both a marina and a fishing dock complete with benches. So sit back and enjoy the view, or take a rest after catching a big one! The new fish filleting house has modern sinks, a new table and a garburator for easy filleting. The campground is lush and beautifully treed with poplar, birch, saskatoon, chokecherry, high bush cranberry, and hazelnut bushes. A berry picker’s paradise! Wild raspberry and strawberry bushes are also found along the various nature trails. Wildlife abounds in the park, varying from white tailed deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and ruffled grouse, to chickadees, blue jays, pileated woodpeckers (one of the largest species of woodpeckers in North America), bald eagles, loons and pelicans. The park also boasts a well treed and beautiful nine hole grass green golf course with a full service clubhouse. Even though our regional parks are diverse; they all share two things in

common. The first is community pride with a support base that consists of volunteers and staff from the local community. From the beginning, the Regional Parks were developed and operated by municipalities and community volunteers who had the desire to provide recreation opportunities for families to enjoy today and in the future.
The second is the Regional Park Season Pass! The $45.00 Season Pass gains you entry into every Regional Park in the province. Funds from the sale of these Season Passes stay at the park where they were purchased, which is an important part of the revenue for each park. Your Regional Park plays a role in the

economic fabric of the community as well. The parks usually purchase the majority of their goods locally, their patrons love to wander through the retail stores near the park and the area benefits from employment at the Regional Park. hether you are an avid outdoor enthusiast or prefer an urban adventure discovering characterful neigh bour hoods, Saskatoon offers year-round memorable experiences for every type of traveller, so you too can go Saskatooning.
Outdoor Adventures This year is Canada’s 150th birthday, a perfect time to get outdoors and explore the Trails of 1885, which shaped our country’s history. Batoche National Historic Site, less than an hour drive from Saskatoon, is a journey back in time that tells a story of the Northwest Resistance of 1885, a critical time when Canada was being formed. Hear Métis folk stories, take an interactive tour, taste traditional bannock and take part in a geocache treasure hunt. For the adventurous, canoe, hike and camp along the South Saskatchewan River on a River Trails of 1885 Canoe Tour led by Canoeski Discovery Company. Make a stop in Batoche and a few other key historical Trails of 1885 sites along the way, for an experience you will never forget. Right in the heart of Saskatoon, you can also get on the water. Kayak or paddle board along the South Saskatchewan River and explore a city on the edge of nature. Hop on the Prairie Lily paddle wheeler and take a relaxing cruise, while the captain and
crew will entertain with tales of the river and valley area. Walk, run or bike along 80km of Meewasin River Valley Trails that run alongside the scenic river. Include a stop at the free outdoor gym by River Landing for a workout with a view.
Culinary Experiences Being on the water and touring the trails is sure to awaken anyone’s appetite. Fortunately our province is known as ‘Canada’s breadbasket’,

Wander across the street to Drift Café & Vista Lounge to sip a latte from a hammock or roof top deck. Or a venture two blocks further for something a bit stronger, a local craft beer, at 9 Mile Legacy’s new brewpub on 20th Street West. Nearby is the newly opened The Local Kitchen, a co-working kitchen space that also offers a variety of cooking classes by top local chefs. Beginner or seasoned cooks visiting Saskatoon can get their hands dirty in the kitchen, learning new skills while sampling local dishes. And if you still aren’t full, be sure to dine at The Hollows or Primal, both in Riversdale. These restaurants owned by Christie Peters and Kyle Michael, believe in whole animal butchery, even tanning hides for their bar stools and turning animal fat into soap. Their food is local and sustainable, not to mention delicious.

Urban Exploring After eating your way around Riversdale’s eclectic historic neighbourhood, cross the Broadway Bridge – one of seven that span the river – to the Broadway district. This popular neighbourhood is full of unique local shops and places to catch local entertainers, everything from street buskers to live bands. Right on Broadway Avenue,
sip a coffee at locally owned Museo Coffee or a craft beer from the Yard & Flagon while enjoying some of the best peoplewatching in the city, especially during the annual Fringe Festival that takes over this iconic street. The talent in the arts in Saskatoon is abundant, and there are rarely days when there aren’t incredible local bands, artists or entertainers at one of the many

venues around the city. One of the highly anticipated venues , that will be a huge permanent showcase of the arts is the Remai Modern, slated to open later this year. Billed as an art museum and so much more, the Remai Modern will house the world’s largest Picasso linocut collection and some of his ceramics. continued on page 24 ››

If musical arts is more your thing, Saskatoon will be host to the 2017 Canadian Country Music Awards September 7 to 10. The city will be filled with festivities during country music week, with cowboy hats galore, and events all around Saskatoon. And not to forget the sports fans. Saskatoon will play host for the next three summers in July, to the first-ever FIBA 3X3 World Tour Masters, an event open to the public right on the streets of downtown Saskatoon, that will showcase some of the best 3 X 3 basketball teams in the world, including Saskatoon’s own top team led by Michael Linklater. All year long, Saskatoon’s neighbourhoods and streets are filled with entertainment and activities for everyone. Whether you are adventuring, experiencing or exploring; there are so many ways to go Saskatooning.

tour along the interpretive Narrow Hills Scenic Drive shows off the finest views; boreal forest, lakes and a museum housed in a former Park Ranger Station. The curving trail follows the highest ridges of the Narrow Hills and is shared by cyclists, hikers and vehicles. Discover the distinctive ‘push moraine’ hill formation here, left 10,000 years ago when the last glaciers retreated. The area
26
is a wonderful mix of narrow valleys and dozens of deep and clear lakes. The Island Lake Hiking Trail is found just off the Narrow Hills Scenic Drive. Hikers follow the wide and sandy trail around Island Lake. Watch for the soft carpets of moss in the forests of jack pine and black spruce, and be sure to watch for the odd deer or moose track along the way. With more than 200km of trails winding through the uplands, there are some steep inclines and a lot of outstanding views.

Skill levels range from beginner to advanced, and trails can be traversed by hikers and bikers with ATVs allowed on some trails. The area has an exciting past and some stunning geological formations to prove it, like the shimmering Gem Lakes. Glacial ice blocks were buried in sand and later melted, creating these small but very deep lakes. Jade, Opal, Sapphire and Pearl come by their names honestly, and are best seen from the Gem Lakes Trail. Plan for about
three hours to complete the hike and be sure to have the camera ready. There are some challenging hills on the Gem Lakes Trail, so it is best enjoyed by more experienced hikers. Regardless of skill level, all hikers are encouraged to pack out what they pack in and use caution around any wildlife. Its narrow lakes, 25 within the park and another 30 within a half hour drive, allow for excellent beach time, water sports and angling. The Narrow Hills are well known as a fly fishing mecca in Saskatchewan. Brook
trout are often found in McDougall Creek while the Gem Lakes are not just good looks; they are stocked with splake, brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout. The rare Kokanee salmon can be found in Zeden Lake, but don’t bank on reeling one of these elusive fish in. With forests reaching to the shore in many areas, fishing is best done from the water on these largely sheltered lakes. continued on page 28 ››

Jade Lake has an easy launch site and there are small portages between some of the other gem lakes. Find boat launches at Sealey Lake, Zeden Lake and Lower Fishing Lake. Enjoy wilderness tenting at Gem Lakes, McDougal Creek and Lost Echo Lake. Campsites that have the maximum 14-night stay program include Baldy Lake, Isupuchaw Lake, Lower Fishing Lake and Zeden Lake. Lower Fishing Lake’s family campground offers boat and canoe rentals, a beach and grocery store. Visit Upper Fishing Lake for cabins, motel lodging, groceries and food service. True outback campers can venture outside the park to the Clarence-Steepbank Lakes Wilderness Provincial Park. Anglers can cast their line for pike, sucker, perch and cisco in the area. One of four wilderness parks in the province, It is located between Whiteswan Lake and East Trout Lake, and is perfect for an escape from modern life with primitive camping, sparkling lakes and mature forest. A visit to the Narrow Hills area is sure to be enjoyed by avid anglers, hikers and anyone who enjoys soaking up nature.

REGINA
R
egina is the heart beat of the province with a long history and laid back culture. With this year being Canada’s 150th anniversary it’s the perfect time to visit the province’s capital and see it all for yourself!
Attractions There are lots of new things to anticipate this year, including several new exhibits at the RCMP Heritage Centre—the museum that brings to life the oldest and most iconic
30
stories of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police! First, put yourself in the high browns of an RCMP cadet with the use of HoloLens mixed-reality glasses. Get your dorm room ready for inspection under the guidance and watchful eye of the Sergeant Major! Second, learn what it takes to drive a police car in our new Driving Simulator that puts you behind the wheel of an actual RCMP vehicle. In this experience, you will have the opportunity to learn about what police officers are looking for out on patrol.
And, if you see an offence taking place, it will be you turning on the emergency lights and sirens! Ever wondered what it would be like to sit in the saddle of one the RCMP’s famous Musical Ride horses? Put on a set of their virtual reality goggles and experience the feeling of being a part of the Musical Ride as they practice a variety of intricate, choreographed movements. During the summer months, be sure to include Tourism Canada’s signature experience, The Sunset Ceremony.

Keep wandering through history as you head into Government House only a few yards away. Built in 1891, Government House first served as the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the Northwest Territories. Restored to the period of Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget, the museum gives you a glimpse of life at Government House at the turn of the 20th Century. There is always a ton of events taking place here to keep it exciting for new and returning visitors. Don’t forget to keep your eye out for Jocko, the Forget’s pet monkey (OK this one is fake, but it’s still cute!) Another amazing building full of history is the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. Located in Wascana Centre, take a guided tour of ‘the Leg’ (as the locals affectionately call it), where all of the key decisions for the province are made.

You won’t have to go far to find other activities to do when you’re done. Wascana Centre, one of North America’s largest urban parks, is home to many great attractions such as the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Saskatchewan Science Centre and the Kramer IMAX Theatre, and Conexus Arts Centre. Not in the mood to be indoors? You can walk around the lake and be surrounded by beautiful marshland that is home to many animals and plants. Try grabbing a picnic lunch and sitting in one of the sculpture gardens. If you prefer an activity more relaxed, try Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP). Rent the gear and head out to explore any of the seven beautiful lakes that can be found in the Regina region. No previous experience or special athletic ability is required, just a love of the water. Hang with locals as you explore some of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

Downtown always has unique restaurants popping up that will make you wonder how you’ve never eaten this good before. Try Victoria’s Tavern, The Capitol, or Malt City to name just a few. Next, head over to the Warehouse District and grab a locallybrewed pint! Rebellion Brewing is home to a famous gluten-free lentil beer, or try Bushkwakker Brewpub where they make amazing blackberry mead in the fall. If you’re looking to leave the city limits, experience a rail excursion similar to what pioneers from the 1920s would have, in the town of Ogema. Stroll down the historic Main Street and visit the British American Gas Station, one of the only remaining corner stations in Western Canada, as well as the Fire Hall. This pioneer ‘village’ includes thirty historic buildings from Ogema and surrounding communities as well as thousands of operating pieces of antique machinery and artifacts.
Shopping
Events
Visitors can find some one-of-a-kind outfits when checking out the local boutiques. Start your shopping trip at Mortise & Tenon where you will find a Regina spin on highquality décor, furniture, art, accessories, and of course, clothes! After you’re done there, head over to the next boutique, Norwood, located just next door. As you enter this boutique you will notice a welcoming environment filled with historical household and industrial items, clothing, and much more. The day would not be complete without a stop at the Stella & Sway Boutique. Filled with women’s accessories and shoes to clothing, they will have your fashion needs covered. Enjoy the sights in Downtown Regina as you walk along to the new luxurious boutique, Dean Renwick Design Studio Inc. & Boutique.
Regina is always buzzing with events. It’s hard to find a weekend where you won’t be intrigued to attend a concert, festival, or tradeshow, but here are some great ones not to miss.

A
visit to the historic Canadian Pacific Rail Station in Rockglen is a must. Visitors will find tourism information, local arts and crafts and - perhaps mostly importantly - the coffee shop. The staff can help decide where to start first in the intriguing South Country Recreation Area. The Rockin’ Beach Community Park and Campground sits along the lovely Fife Lake just east of town. The park features a playground, baseball fields and a reunion centre perfect for large gatherings.

Steeped in historical landmarks and home to endangered species and sweeping prairie views, Saskatchewan’s southern regions are a must-see. Keep your eyes peeled for the Northern Shrike and Piping Plover; both of these endangered species call Fife Lake home. If you stop at the nearby Fife Lake Hotel ask what’s on the menu as they grill a mean steak there. Take a glimpse into ancient history at the Effie Mattson Nature Walk and Archeological Centre. The regional diorama helps visitors imagine the last great glacier, the incredible meltwater runoff that carved the valley below and left the Big Muddy Badlands in its wake. continued on page 36 ››

›› continued from page 35 A climb up the hill named Columbus will be a definite photo opportunity; selfies and superb views of Rockglen alike. See First Nations artifacts and diverse plant life with semi-arid species and natural berry bushes. Any geocachers in the crowd will enjoy the search named for Effie Mattson. Rockglen Tourism Tours are a great way to cover the area’s many attractions. Tours start from the Visitor Centre in the old rail station, and range from three to six hours in length. Tour One begins in the Killdeer Badlands in the Grasslands National Park. The sprawling preservation area represents one of North America’s rare uncultivated tracts of prairie grasslands and is an eco-tourism dream. Next stop is the Wood Mountain Historic Regional Park. Make rope, cook bannock or make lye soap in the historic Rodeo Ranch Museum and learn about the cowboys and ranchers who arrived in
36
the 1800s. This is home of Canada’s oldest continuous rodeo, the Wood Mountain Stampede held each July. Kids will love trying out the 19th century jail cell and the old fashioned hand cuffs in the North West Mounted Police post; just watch your back! Nearby, a monument to the famous Sioux medicine man, Sitting Bull, sits atop a hill overlooking the park. Tour Two begins with a mine tour of the thermal power generating station at Coronach’s Poplar River Power Plant and a short drive to see some of North America’s largest draglines at Luscar Mines. Get ready for Aust’s General Store in Big Beaver. This country store knows that ‘if they don’t have it, you don’t need it.’ Next stop is the Big Big Muddy Badlands and the awe inspiring Castle Butte. Whispers of the wild old days live here, and visitors hear tales of outlaws and horse thieves. The North West Mounted Police Post and country school finish the tour before a
stop at the Coronach Museum. On Tour Three, visitors can see how they measure up to the life-size statue of the Willow Bunch Giant, Edouard Beaupré. The Willow Bunch museum is housed in an old convent which was constructed in 1914 by the Sisters of the Cross. Learn more about Sitting Bull’s influence on the area’s history and of Jean Louis Légaré and the first Métis settlers. This is a shorter tour and wraps up with one of our province’s great mysteries, the St. Victor Petroglyphs. These carvings of bears, birds, tracks and human faces are etched into the towering plateau of Ravenscrag sandstone. Best viewed in low light, they are thought to be carved between 500 and 1700 A.D. The Rockglen area is rich with history, geological marvels and a vibrant sense of community. Visit www.rockglentourism.com to plan your trip.
