At 10 metres (33 ft), is one of the highest waterfalls in the province of Saskatchewan. The falls are on the Rapid River, which flows north from Iskwatikan Lake into Nistowiak Lake on the Churchill River. Nistowiak is a Cree word referring to the convergence of waters. The falls, Iskwatikan Lake and the south shore of Nistowiak Lake are within Lac La Ronge Provincial Park. Lac La Ronge drains into the Churchill River through these falls. HOUSEBOAT HOLIDAYS A unique way to get up close and personal with nature By Cheryl Krett Ever been to sea Billy? Forget that idea how about a vacation on waters a bit closer to home ... navigating the lakes and rivers on one of the many houseboats available to rent in Saskatchewan! A houseboat holiday is just plain fun. You have the chance to be the “captain” of your own ship ... ahem ... houseboat (it’s been said 4
See Scenic Saskatchewan
that if you can drive a car, you can steer a houseboat) and see the beauty of our province’s natural wonders from a different vantage point. There’s also the chance to dock on different shorelines, set up your base camp and explore the countryside, golf, swim, fish, or just relax on the sandy beaches and watch the splendor of an amazing prairie sunset.
Houseboating attracts a variety of people – from those wanting a family vacation that’s out of the ordinary, to adventure-seekers, nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts, photographers, and those celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and even weddings! Proponents of the holiday say it’s a lot cheaper than going to the Shushwaps in British Columbia, if you consider the cost of gas, rental fees and travel time. Saskatchewan’s experience is also a bit “tamer” in the sense that the lakes aren’t crowded so it’s easier to find a secluded, family-friendly spot to dock. And besides, where else but in Saskatchewan would you come face to face with a herd of Angus cows

staring at you from the shoreline, or hear the compelling cry of the loon, or view the Northern Lights as they dance across the sky? If you think houseboating is “roughing it” think again. Today’s houseboats feature many of the conveniences of home, such as a fully-stocked kitchen, cozy bedrooms, indoor plumbing and heating, showers, propane fireplaces and even a hot tub on the upper deck. Bring along the usual items you would take on a camping trip, such as your camera, backpack, sunglasses, hat, bug repellant and sunscreen. Clothing should be packed to suit a variety of Continued on page 6

weather conditions, including brisk winds. A bathing suit is a must (lots of opportunities to swim), as is your favourite sports gear. Most houseboats have a fridge and freezer, so you can keep food and beverages at the proper temperature. Ask the owner if bedding, pillows and towels are included or will be added to your fee, and whether fishing boats and personal watercraft are available to rent, or can be towed by the houseboat. Safety equipment, such as lifejackets, a fire extinguisher and firstaid kit, are usually supplied. For added security, most feature a GPS or a ship to shore radio in case of emergencies or to ask directions. There are three locations within our province where you can rent a houseboat. Each offers a different experience and various boat sizes from which to choose. Eagle Point Resort is located about four kilometres north of the town of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. In addition to a nine-hole full green grass golf course, RV park, rental cabins, marina, restaurant and lounge, the Resort offers four different houseboats that sleep six to eight people. From Eagle Point Resort, you can pack your gear and board the houseboat to start your adventure, manoeuvring through the 1600-plus square kilometres of Lac La Ronge and its bays. To take advantage of the on- and off-water activities, guests can board the boat the night before their departure and park at the Resort’s dock, thus allowing time to play a round of golf or have supper at the restaurant. Then, after the captain’s lesson in the morning (where you master the skill of driving the boat), you’re on your way! And what an adventure you’ll have — according to Lolita Poirier, owner/operator of houseboat rentals at Eagle Point Resort. “The scenery is breathtaking, with amazing views of the boreal forest and Precambrian Shield rocks, plus the very sandy beaches at the south end of the lake,” she says. Due to the abundance of trees, you don’t get the stronger winds. “However,” Poirier cautions, “we always recommend people check out the weather conditions to know what’s happening on the water.” Depending on what you want to see and do, the Resort will suggest some of the best spots for docking along the 1,000 kilometres of shoreline. “Sometimes you can go four or five days

without seeing another boat, so it’s a very relaxing, private vacation,” says Poirier. There are also 1,300 islands within Lac La Ronge, offering plenty of hiking and exploring activities. From the vantage point of your houseboat, you’re likely to see a plethora of wildlife — eagles and other local birds, muskrats, beavers, and on rare occasion, a moose or bear. Poirier says Lac La Ronge is a great recreational lake, with camping, boating and water skiing (best months for the water sports is July and August). It’s also famous for its fishing (best during the month of June) — walleye (pickerel), northern pike and lake trout. Due to popular demand, Eagle Point Resort includes the use of a free fishing boat as part of the houseboat rental package. The houseboating season begins the May long weekend until Labour Day. Eagle Point Resort 1-888332-4536; info@eaglepoint.ca Sask River Tours is located about 1.5 kilometres west of the town of Riverhurst, on Highway 42. The company’s owner, Don Dutertre, says he has a fleet of three boats: two 10-person and one 19-person model, for rent on Lake Diefenbaker. The largest one is 64 feet long and 27 feet wide — making it the biggest rental houseboat in Canada — with a paddlewheel to boot! (He is adding a big-screen TV in the very near future.)
Vacationers can explore the lake in a 56-kilometre operating range from Sask River Tours’ home base. Several big bays offer a docking point for the night. “You can get waves at night, but the bays are calm enough so vacationers can water ski, fish or participate in other water sports,” he says. Many appreciate the panoramic view of the Badlands from the boat deck — and Dutertre suggests keeping a lookout for deer, hawks, ducks, beavers, antelope and elk. Of course, the fishing is great. In early spring, it’s jack, whitefish, pickerel, and rainbow trout. The summer months, it’s whitefish and walleye; and in the fall, the walleye fishing is best. If you can’t catch a fish, pull up to the shore a few kilometres down from the houseboat rental area, where fresh trout is sold at Wild West Steelhead fish farm. For budding paleontologists, take some time to pick marine fossils along the shoreline — you may even find some petrified wood to add to your collection! Golfers can choose from golf courses at Elbow and Outlook. History buffs will appreciate Hitchcock’s Hideaway, easily accessed by houseboat. It features an old hermit’s cabin built over 100 years ago by Jack Hitchcock. Dutertre says Jack Hitchcock was “like Buffalo Bill in the United
States” — a real wild west character. You can tour through his log cabin and look at more artifacts in the church nearby. In addition to the history, Hitchcock’s Hideaway features a beautiful bay with sandy beaches and good pickerel fishing. If you’d like to leave the navigating to someone else, Don Dutertre will take you for a houseboat tour on the M/V Betty Lou. There are several tour options, ranging from a visit to Hitchcock’s cabin and Bird Island (where hundreds of cormorants and seagulls may be spotted), to a steak supper and dance, or rainbow trout dinner cruise. Houseboat rentals are usually from the May long weekend to the third or fourth week of September. Sask River Tours 306-353-4603; sk.rivertours@gmail.com Aurora Houseboats operates in the Nipawin and District Regional Park at the southwest end of Tobin Lake, a mile from the town of Nipawin. It’s about a four hour drive straight north of Regina on Highway #6, and three hours northeast of Saskatoon on Hwy #11. Vacationers can choose from three houseboats, offering sleeping accommodations for eight, 10, and 12 people. The largest model is 50 feet long and 14 feet wide and features a hot tub on the upper deck and slide off the back. What a relaxing way to travel!
Tobin Lake is situated in the boreal forest area of the province. So the views will definitely be spectacular! And, they won’t be hindered by signs of construction — there are few cabins that dot the shoreline, so all you see is what nature has to offer — towering trees, natural high banks, and an abundance of wildlife. Curtis Lockwood, who owns and operates Aurora Houseboats with his wife Tressa, says that it’s common to see deer, moose, elk, beaver, pelicans, cormorants, ducks, geese and eagles — “and on a very rare occasion, bear” during a houseboating holiday on Tobin Lake. “The variety of trees — from spruce, pine, poplar and aspen, are especially beautiful in September when they change colour,” he says. As well, Aurora Houseboats is the only houseboat rental operation on the lake - so it’s very unlikely you’ll share any docking spots with others. That leaves you on your own private beach, with time to boat, water ski and swim (in the summer months, the lake is very warm for its size), not to mention the popular pastime of fishing! Tobin Lake has gained a world-wide reputation for its incredible walleye and trophy pike — reason enough to see if you can break a new provincial record! Lockwood says they are also very open to sharing information on the best fishing spots. “Most of our customers bring
their own fishing boat or rent one to tow behind to give them the freedom to fish some of the shallow bays,” he explains. Ski boats and personal watercrafts are also welcome. Don’t forget that hiking and exploring the surrounding countryside is a great pastime — followed by a campfire on the beach for roasting marshmallows while star gazing. Aurora Houseboats also offers river cruises for up to 25 people/tour. They have hosted people from all over the world, who appreciate the pristine beauty only northern Saskatchewan can offer. There are evening and day cruises that last from two to six hours. The houseboat heads upstream from the marina (located next to Aurora’s dock), under an old CPR bridge built in the 1920s, and up towards the Hydro Dam and back again, or downstream toward the mouth of the lake. Guests will learn some of the interesting bits of trivia about the area and can enjoy a catered meal or bring their own food during the cruise. After a few hours on the lake, there’s still time to play a round of golf at Nipawin Evergreen golf course, conveniently located five minutes from Aurora Houseboat’s dock. Houseboat rentals are available from the May long weekend to Labour Day. Aurora Houseboats 306-862-7014; info@aurorahouseboats.com

NORTHERN EXPOSURE Tourism Saskatchewan/Hans-Gerhard Pfaff
Relax and enjoy the great northern outdoors By Jessica Green The rugged beauty of Saskatchewan’s north shapes the people who live here and continues to inspire those who visit. You’ll find the finest recreation with championship golf courses, outstanding fishing, parks and urban centres. With a compelling past, vast untouched wilderness and rare geological wonders, the north is yours to discover. With 100,000 lakes in the province and 8

a great deal of these in the north, there are too many to list. The fish grow big with all this cool, deep water, and the freshwater fishing is outstanding. Species include northern pike, walleye, lake trout, Arctic grayling and rainbow trout. Whether you’re interested in the remote fly-in camps further north or more accessible shore fishing, this is your chance to reel in the big one.
Not just for fishing, the northern lakes and their shores are a wonderful place to relax, play and enjoy the outdoors. Explore beautiful Lac La Ronge from the comforts of an Eagle Point Resort houseboat. Watch for spectacular sunsets and, if you are lucky, nature’s fascinating light shows the aurora borealis. The mighty Churchill River boasts some of the world’s best whitewater canoeing. See and hear the dramatic 25m Nistowiak Falls, Saskatchewan’s largest, and the exciting stretch of Otter Rapids. Best viewed with the help of an outfitter, this adventure will surely make your next blog entry. The Clearwater River was once a major travel route for voyageurs of the fur trade, and has since been designated a Canadian Heritage River. It ranks among Canada’s most challenging canoe routes.
One of the province’s most wellknown canoe routes leads to the doors of Beaver Lodge. Once the home of naturalist Grey Owl, the cabin sits on the shore of Ajawaan Lake in the Prince Albert National Park. Grey Owl caught the world’s attention with his words about conservation, a cause to which he dedicated his life. The Prince Albert National Park covers 3,875 square kilometres and includes some 1,500 lakes and streams. Protecting endangered species, pockets of rare fescue grasslands and boreal forest, the park is a natural treasure and is one of the province’s most popular destinations year round. The townsite of Waskesiu has all the amenities, with accommodations from camping to four-star resorts, dining, shopping, arts and recreation. Check out a rainy-day matinee at the Two Pines Cinema, or try your hand at horseshoes, tennis, lawn bowling, biking or hiking. Take a dip at one of the many nearby beaches. The Waskesiu Golf Course was built in 1935, and was designed by the legendary Canadian architect Stanley Thompson. There is an extensive network of hiking and biking trails, and from easy 2km loops to challenging multi-day treks, there are more than 150 trails winding through the area. Be sure to get a park map and plan your route before you start. The diverse landscape allows the park to support a wide range of wildlife. Moose, wolves and caribou can be found in the northern forests, while the parklands to the south shelter elk, deer and badgers. There are hundreds of species of birds here, as well. On west side of the park are the Sturgeon River Plains Bison, Canada’s only freeranging herd within their historic range.
The Sturgeon River Ranch’s vacation packages are a great way to catch a glimpse into ranch life, including horseback rides to see the bison. Just outside the park is the resort area including Emma, Christopher and Anglin Lakes. The area has many dining and accommodation options including the chance to sleep in a yurt at Flora Bora Forest Lodging. Emma Lake Recreation Site and Murray Point campgrounds also provide excellent lodging and recreation. Of course, Northern Saskatchewan is not only about nature and reflection. With this magnificent and sometimes challenging landscape comes a strong sense of community, an impassioned group of artists and a lively events scene. The nearby Elk Ridge Resort is known to throw a party - check out their New Year’s Eve celebration or the winter-time pond hockey tournament. This luxurious resort is a four-season wonderland with a 27-hole championship golf course, indoor pool, spa, executive chef and so much more. The nearby Sunset Bay Resort just celebrated their 25th year in business with a spectacular fireworks display and feast. By popular demand, they are planning for a repeat performance. Thousands of people travel to enjoy the Ness Creek Music Festival near Big River each summer. With main stage performances, eco-village, workshops, drum and dance circle, children’s area and more, the festival features a wide range of music from Saskatchewan folk to world beat. The Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival, also held at the Ness Creek site, is a celebration of traditional music with a gorgeous natural setting. of artist studios where you may watch them work. A similar tour called the Northern Horizons Journey of Creativity is held in the Medstead area. In Prince Albert, the E.A. Rawlinson Centre is a hub of arts and culture, housing both the Mann Art Gallery and the John G and Olive Diefenbaker theatre. Incorporated in 1885, Prince Albert is older than the province and is home to one of the province’s oldest and finest golf links, the Cooke Municipal Golf Course. While you’re in town try Amy’s on Second and see why it’s been featured in What to Eat in Canada every year since 1991. Cool off at the Kinsmen Water Park with its two towering water slides, whirlpool and more. Celebrate summer at the Prince Albert Exhibition Summer Fair. Learn about the early days of law and order at Creighton’s Northwest Mounted Police Post Museum, a replica of the 1900s police post. You’ll hear about the gold-rush town of Beaver City that once sat on the shores of Amisk Lake. Saskatchewan’s oldest building is near Lac La Ronge. The Holy Trinity Anglican Church sits on the banks of the Churchill River, and was built by locals of Stanley Mission in the 1850s. The remarkable Gothic Revival style architecture earmarks it as a product of the 19th Century. The building has its original hinges, locks and stained glass, all imported from England. Of the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park’s 100 lakes, Lac La Ronge itself is one of the province’s largest and is home to 1,300 islands. Many of these islands are wilderness area and make a great place for a shore lunch. Visit La Ronge’s genuine trading post, Robertson Trading Ltd where raw furs are still bought and sold. techniques. Further south, the Meadow Lake Provincial Park is one of Saskatchewan’s largest and boasts a string of 25 sparkling lakes. The community of Meadow Lake was originally a Hudson’s Bay Company post in the late 1700s. Today the city is a hub for northwest Saskatchewan with a great 18-hole golf course, a campground, hiking and biking trails and more. The Candle Lake Golf Resort is carved through the forest and its varied terrain and numerous sand traps provide a challenging round of golf. The nearby Candle Lake Provincial Park has campgrounds and beautiful white-sand beaches at Minowukaw, Wasketeena and Sandy Bay. In the Narrow Hills Provincial Park and the surrounding area are more than 50 lakes. The geological oddities of the Gem Lakes are certainly worth a visit - you’ll see why they are named Jade, Opal, Sapphire and Pearl. Created when glacial ice blocks were buried and later melted, these dazzling little lakes are small in size but extremely deep. In the far north is another geological wonder. The Athabasca Sand Dunes are the world’s most northerly dunes and they stretch for 100km along the southern
shore of Lake Athabasca. Towering over the landscape at 30m in some places, these constantly-migrating dunes are a true biological treasure. Lake Athabasca is the province’s largest lake and is a haven for more than 20 species of fish. The largest lake trout on record was caught here in 1961 and weighed a whopping 46kg (102 pounds.) Species include trout, Arctic grayling, walleye and northern pike. The Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Wilderness Park protect this fragile environment. In addition to the dunes, the area is home to many rare and endemic plants and is accessible by water or air only. Book a tour package or day-trip, many of which depart from the hamlet of Stony Rapids. Be sure to stop at Scott’s General Store to pick up the essentials like groceries, sunglasses, a beaver pelt or a snowmobile. Whether you’re a history buff, an extreme adventurer, an art lover or just someone who likes to get away, you are sure to find your fit here. This majestic piece of the world holds our history, gives us life and inspires us to be worthy stewards of nature. A visit to the north is sure to stay with you long after you’ve gone.

Remarkable places to view natural beauty By Tiffany Stephenson Visiting a Saskatchewan provincial park will create a lifetime of memories. Our parks are places to reconnect with friends, family or nature. Our facilities offer endless opportunities for your summer vacation; campgrounds are the perfect place to bring generations together, and share in each other’s company. 12

Saskatchewan provincial parks continue to offer up increasingly unique visitor experiences. In the past year a number of new attractions opened within Saskatchewan provincial parks, making some of the busiest tourist destinations in our province even more appealing.
Today, Saskatchewan’s provincial parks offer up a broader range of activities than ever before, helping to extend their appeal across generations and interest groups. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park saw two new attractions open this past year – an observatory complex as well as Cypress Hills Eco Adventures. Cypress Hills is a remarkable place to view the natural beauty of the starry night. The observatory complex, completed by Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and the Friends of Cypress Hills, builds on the park’s reputation as a Dark-Sky Preserve and one of the very best astronomical viewing sites in North
America. The development includes a Dome Observatory with a 60 seat yurt classroom, an outdoor telescope platform and two telescopes. Located next to the Dark Sky Campground, the observatory will be used to educate school children and visitors about the universe, environmental protection and energy conservation. Cypress Hills was the first park in Saskatchewan and Alberta to become recognized as a Dark-Sky Preserve; it is one of the largest in North America, preserving 39,600 hectares – 97,850 football fields! Also new in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is Cypress Hills Eco Adventures, a private business located
in the park that features a collection of fun outdoor activities. This recent Tourism Saskatchewan Rookie of the Year Award Winner, features a zipline canopy tour, a rock climbing wall and other activities. The zipline canopy tour includes six world class ziplines, more than 13 metres (45 feet) above Cypress’ unique forest of Lodgepole Pines. Meadow Lake Provincial Park has long been an outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination. Its appeal recently grew with the official opening of the Boreal Trail. The 120 kilometre backpacking trail is the first of its kind in a Saskatchewan provincial park. Spanning the park in an east-west traverse, it showcases the Continued on page 14

beauty and diversity of the park. The Boreal Trail system is adaptable to all types of adventure; offering multi-day trips, backcountry camping, and a variety of start and end points. Depending on your fitness level, you may choose to hike the trail in stages as a leisurely stroll or all at once from end-to-end. The system of marked trails links eight existing front-country campgrounds as well as provides backcountry camping opportunities. The trail system will take you through a variety of ecosystems within the boreal forest and into some sections of Meadow Lake Provincial Park that most people do not see. Backcountry camping is available on the Boreal Trail, but must be registered at one of the campground offices. There is an $11 per-tent, per night camping fee for backcountry campsites, which can be paid at the point of registration. GPS tracks of the trail are also available for downloading. If you are looking for a fun activity that you can do in most of the provincial parks, try geocaching. Geocaching is a fun, family-friendly outdoor pastime that is equal parts scavenger hunt, hike, outdoor adventure and gift exchange with a technological twist.

Caches can be found throughout the provincial park system. The name and coordinates of each cache are listed on the geocaching.com website. You can find caches within parks by searching for caches registered to the username SK Parks. If you forget to load this information into your GPS unit before you leave home, just inquire at the park office when you arrive. Further information and geocaching rules and how to select your first cache can be found on www.saskparks.net. When you find a cache, post a message to SaskParks Facebook page, and tell everyone about your experience. Need a little help planning your day? Saskatchewan provincial parks host many programs and events throughout the summer. Most parks have on staff interpreters that host programs targeted at children and families. Popular activities include guided hikes, campfire programs and educational programs about the environmental, cultural or historical elements of the area. There are also special events that take place throughout the summer – such as visits from Smokey the Bear, musical performances and travelling interpretive programs by the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. To see
what’s going on in the park, visit www. saskparks.net and the online event calendar. On the road? Not a problem, our event calendar is mobile friendly. Camping is a perennial favourite at Saskatchewan provincial parks, and the cornerstone to most visitors’ summer vacation. Saskatchewan provincial parks and recreation sites offer a wide range of camping experiences. Most parks offer a variety of site types, from full-service, to electric, non-electric, backcountry and barrier free. Over the past four years, renewed commitment and investment into Saskatchewan provincial parks have resulted in major upgrades. In fact, this camping season marks the first year that nearly all 1,200 newly electrified camping sites will be available in parks throughout the province, including newly electrified sites in Duck Mountain, Crooked Lake and Cypress Hills. New service centres will also open in Crooked Lake Provincial Park and Emma Lake Recreation Site. This year also marked the roll-out of a new online reservation system. This system has many features that campers have been requesting for years, including immediate confirmation, safe and secure

payment, online refunds if plans change, and the ability to pick the site of your choice. In addition to simplifying the Tourism Saskatchewan/Paul Austring process of booking a site in advance, it also allows campers to check availability prior to leaving – to better accommodate spontaneous vacations. Saskatchewan parks are great destinations beyond the traditional summer season. Full services are available from Thursday, May 17, 2012 through to the Monday of the September long weekend. However, depending on the weather, many parks, especially in the southern portion of the province stay open with services until well into October. Enjoy one of the fifteen regional park campgrounds By Jessica Green Discover world-record fishing, a beach touted as one of Canada’s Top 10, North America’s longest-running short film festival, award-winning galleries, reconstructed sites of the Northwest Rebellion and plenty of celebrations between. Visit Macklin and you’ll be able to add a checkmark next to: “threw horse ankle” on your summer holiday wish list. The Macklin World 16

Bunnock Championship Challenge accepts up to 320 teams and offers a full celebration with children’s rides, street dance, craft shows and more each summer. The main attraction, of course, is the traditional German-Russian game played with actual horse anklebones. Stay at the Macklin Lake Regional Park, just one of 15 regional park campgrounds in Central Saskatchewan.
If “dance a red river jig” happens to be on your list, head to Back to Batoche Days and join this celebration of culture and family. With fiddling and jigging contests, chuckwagon and chariot races, square dancing and the colourful sashes of the traditional Métis garb, this three-day celebration honours the culture borne of the fur trade. The Batoche National Historic Site is a significant site of the 1885 Northwest Resistance between the Métis and the Canadian Government. On the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, this was the last battlefield in the rebellion. Today visitors can see original trenches and rifle
pits, the Church of St. Antoine de Padoue, the rectory and archaeological remains of the village. Kids will love dressing in period costume and learning through the Kids Xplorers Club. Track down caches and unscramble clues with Trails of 1885 Geocaching. You’ll follow the trails of the North West Resistance and learn of these days of unrest. The Duck Lake Regional Interpretive Centre invites you to see the 1880s from the eyes of pioneers, First Nations and Métis people. Swan River District of the HBC until 1871. Nearby is Fort Livingstone, the first permanent post of the North West Mounted Police which briefly housed the territorial government in the late 1800s. The Fort Carlton Provincial Park invites
you to the rugged and adventurous days of the fur trade, before Canada was a country. This Hudson’s Bay Company fur-trading post operated between 1810 and 1885 and has a reconstructed palisade, fur and provisions store, teepee
encampment and more. Just outside the fort is the North Saskatchewan River and the original Carlton Trail, where you can still see ruts left by Red River Carts. To see present-day wagons in action, head to Canada’s only border city for the

Southern Saskatchewan FISHING
A trophy class fish is always just one cast away Story and photos by Michael Hungle Southern Saskatchewan is blessed with a large number of lakes and rivers that offer anglers some great fishing opportunities. These are all drive-to waters, and anglers fishing these waters have opportunities to catch lots of fish per outing and a trophy class fish is always just one cast away! Here’s the scoop on some of my favorites. The community of Fort Qu’Appelle is a mere 45 minutes north east of Regina and is in 26

the middle of a chain of four lakes commonly called the “Fishing Lakes”. These lakes have strong walleye, pike, perch and burbot populations and there are annual reports of rock bass and channel cats being caught in these lakes. Pasqua Lake is west of Fort Qu’Appelle, and the first lake in the chain. There is a government boat launch on the south east end of this lake. One of the best fishing locations is the sandy flats on the far west end of the lake.
Pasqua Lake empties into Echo Lake, which is directly west of Fort Qu’Appelle. There is a good boat launch on the west end of Echo Lake, in the Echo Valley Provincial Park. Once on the water, most anglers head for the deep water off the edge of the sandbar at B-Say-Tah point. There is also good shore fishing opportunities around the lake. Mission Lake is the next waterbody in the chain of fishing lakes and is east of Fort Qu’Appelle. There is a boat launch at the community of Lebret. The northern shoreline is one of the best areas on this lake to catch fish. Further east is Katepwa Lake, the fourth lake in the chain. This lake is the deepest of the four lakes and tends to produce
bigger sized fish. There is a public boat launch at Katepwa Beach on the north side of the lake. Fishing is usually good around the sand bar at Sandy Bay. Lake Diefenbaker is a man made lake in southern Saskatchewan. Although the lake is best known for its walleye fishing, it also offers anglers incredible fishing action for pike and rainbow trout. The lake also contains perch, sauger, goldeye, whitefish, burbot and even some Atlantic salmon. Diefenbaker is a gigantic lake with almost 800 kilometres of shoreline, making it southern Saskatchewan’s largest lake. It’s so large, that three different provincial parks are situated Continued on page 28

around its perimeter. On the west end is Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park. This park is approximately a half hour north of Swift Current. This is where the Saskatchewan River begins to widen and become a lake. The park has a first class boat launch and the angling in this area is great. Danielson Provincial Park is located on the north end of the lake, near the Gardner Dam. This park is less than an hour from the city of Saskatoon and has fine boat launch facilities. Prime fishing can be had on both sides of the dam. The Qu’Appelle Valley Dam is on the east side of Diefenbaker Lake and so is Douglas Provincial Park. The park and boat launch facility is an hour from Moose Jaw. During the spring and early summer, the fishing near the dam is fabulous. There are several other boat launches on Diefenbaker, including one near the community of Elbow and another by the Riverhurst Ferry Crossing. The fishing action in Lake Diefenbaker isn’t just limited to the areas nearby the boat launches. Prime fishing exists in the mouths of countless coulees, sand-flats and wind-swept shorelines. There are also numerous access points around the lake where people can fish from shore. About an hour north of Regina, is Last Mountain Lake. This lake is 3 kilometres wide and 93 kilometres long, so it’s often called Long Lake. Regardless of what it’s called, this lake is home to some real trophy class walleye and northern pike. It also contains perch, whitefish and

He’s a “herd” above the rest! The gentle giant, at 32 feet in height, is the artistic vision of Don Foulds who created Mac the Moose in 1984 out of steel, metal mesh wire and tons of cement (exaggeration intended - he does weigh in at 10 tons!). Mac has always hung out at the Moose Jaw Tourism Centre, just off the TransCanada highway as you enter Moose Jaw. When the Centre moved in 2004, Mac took the two kilometre hike with them. After all,
burbot. Early in the year, fishing is best at both ends of the lake. As spring turns to summer, fish start to move into the middle sections of the lake where they have access to deep water areas and lots of structure. At the north end of the lake is Last Mountain Regional Park. There is a nice boat launch and campground there. On the southern end, a wonderful boat launch can be found at Regina Beach. In the middle of the Lake is Rowan’s Ravine Provincial Park that has a marina, camping and cabins. Rafferty Dam was created in the late 80s and early 90s when the Souris River
was dammed near Estevan. This long, deep and narrow lake stretches 50 kilometres and has a maximum width of one kilometre and has strong populations of walleye, northern pike and perch. It also has bullhead cats. Since numerous roads and trails were washed out as a result of this lake being formed, there are countless fishing access points on this lake for shore anglers. There are only two main launches on this lake. The first is located on the east end of the lake right near the Rafferty Dam and only a few minutes from the city of Estevan. The second launch is a first class marina and boat launch facility in the Mainprize Regional Park which is less than an hour south east of Weyburn. The launch at Mainprize Regional Park appears to be strategically placed as it was situated in the hub of walleye territory and many walleye anglers fish within viewing distance of the boat launch. While I’ve discussed a few of my favorite southern Saskatchewan waterbodies for fishing, there are many other great southern water bodies waiting for anglers to come visit. Some of these other waterbodies are Alameda Reservoir, Black Strap Lake, Boundary Dam, Bone Creek, Buffalo Pound Lake, Crooked Lake, Nickle Lake, Ried Lake, Round Lake and the South Saskatchewan River. So, the next time you’re thinking of heading out to enjoy some fishing in Saskatchewan, try fishing one of Saskatchewan’s southern lakes!
Welcome
he’s a BIG part of the city’s tourist welcoming committee! In 2009, Mac the Moose lost his jaw (there’s irony in that statement, I suspect). The community rallied together to fundraise. Mac got a new jaw as well as a plastic overcoat to hold all his pieces together and protect his paint colour. Mac is wellknown as the largest moose in the world, and thousands have their picture taken with him every year. Aside from a smaller cluster of moose statues in Moose Jaw, the only other “Big Attraction” moose in Saskatchewan is found in Hudson Bay (Millennium Moose).

On September 3, 1980 at approximately 2:00 p.m., 3,000 people in Canora Saskatchewan welcomed the birth of a new resident, weighing a whopping 4,000 pounds! Standing 25 feet in height, she was named “Lesia” and has become a famous landmark in the area. Lesia is a beautiful, smiling statue dressed in Ukrainian attire complete with colourful flower headdress. She holds welcome symbols that are dear to the Ukrainian people - who comprise half of the population of Canora and area “kolach” bread and salt on a “rooshnyk (an embroidered towel). It is estimated that just in the summer months alone, 400 plus visitors stop to take a picture of this commanding figure. Located along Highway 9/Norway Road, Lesia was created by a Canora artist Nicholas P. Lewchuk, with help from his son Orest. It took over a year to complete the statute, which was commissioned to celebrate the town’s 75th anniversary. Photo courtesy the town of Canora.
Santa
in Watson
It was in the month of December in 1932 that the townsfolk in Watson, Saskatchewan received a surprise visit from Santa Claus! Jake Smith, hardware store owner, convinced Santa to board a CN train and stop to share some fun with local residents. Everyone was thrilled, as Santa led a couple hundred youngsters in a parade right to the door of Jake’s hardware store. Santa must have truly fallen in love with Watson and its people. Every year since, he has made a regular visit to the town to participate in Santa days during the first weekend in December, with fireworks, skating, cookie decorating, talent show, special entertainment, and supper with Santa. To commemorate the vision of Jake Smith, a 25 foot Santa sculpture was erected in Watson in 1996, at the junction of Highways 5 and 6. His cheerful countenance is a year-long reminder of the joy of the Christmas season. Santa is also Rider fan - look for him in a giant-sized Saskatchewan Roughrider jersey during the football season!

Southern Saskatchewan is truly spectacular By Jessica Green Take time to venture off the Trans Canada highway and you’ll be surprised with the things you see. With beautiful lake-lined valleys, wineries and art galleries, dramatic cliffs and the highest point east of the Rockies, southern Saskatchewan is truly spectacular. In the southwest corner of the province stands a high plateau of forest and the unmistakable sweet scent of pine of the Cypress Hills. 30

A great variety of birds and wildlife like deer, moose and elk live here, and with more than 50km of trails winding in and around the forest you’re best to pack a camera. Year-round accommodations include campgrounds, cabins and resort lodges. Join the largest gathering of stargazers in Canada at the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party, part of the Dark Sky Preserve at Cypress.
Fly through the forest on a zipline high above the forest floor with Cypress Hills EcoAdventurers. Test your strength and agility on the three-storey tall climbing wall, or see if you’ve got what it takes to be a great slacker on the slacklines. Enjoy a bistro lunch on the beautiful patio overlooking the wild grasses and streams before wandering through the vineyards or viewing the wine-making area. Pick up any of the eight varieties of wines and a carefully-selected array of items in the gift shop. Stop in Maple Creek for a bite to eat at the Star Cafe & Grill in its beautifully-restored

Several of our province’s historical statues can be attributed to the talents of Don Wilkins, a history buff and artist who farms near Girvin, Saskatchewan.
During the winter months, he creates incredible statutes of steel, dedicated to the history of the Métis People. In fact, it was Wilkins and a small committee of people who were successful in having Highway #11 - between Regina and a point just below Prince Albert - renamed the Louis Riel Trail in 2001. Wilkins wanted to see historical references to Métis life (circa 1850-1895) along that stretch of highway. He has been busy building statues and sculptures to fulfill this goal, along with 14 Red River Cart replicas, which are his signature work. Much of this artwork is done at no charge to the towns and villages in which they reside - a testament to his passion for Saskatchewan and its rich history. At each statue, he has included a plaque that outlines the history behind the artwork. The first statue he created was erected near the village of Girvin, which is located between Craik and Davidson. It is a striking image of a buffalo along with a Red River Cart. Buffalo were the mainstay of the Métis people in the area. That’s why you’ll find several references to buffalo in Wilkins’s artwork, including a Buffalo Hunter statue in Craik. The hunter is scanning the horizon, looking for buffalo, which had become scarce on the prairie landscape in the mid to late 1800s. The hunter carries
a Sharp’s rifle, which was the typical hunting rifle used during that time period. There is a lifesize Ox and Cart statue in the village of Aylesbury, a small farming community located between Regina and Saskatoon. The statue, built in 1999 by Wilkins, is located on the southwest side of Highway 11 towards the entrance to the town. The Surveyor statue in Chamberlain depicts the time in history when the NWT government decided to send surveyors to the prairies. The Métis people were afraid that any readjustments to the survey marks they had already developed, would result in a loss of title to their land. This was one of the reasons for the outbreak of the Métis Resistance in 1885 and later the Riel Rebellion. The Surveyor statue is 10 feet tall and made of 1/8 inch thick steel. The town of Davidson has The Fiddler statue, which pays homage to the Métis people and their love of celebrating with lively socials and dances. The statue is about eight feet tall and is holding a fiddle while standing near a Red River Cart. At Dundurn, there is a Métis man standing beside a horse and cart. He is holding a buffalo skull, symbolic of the time in history when the buffalo were near extinction and the Métis had to find a way to survive by picking up buffalo bones and selling them at rail terminals in Saskatoon, Regina and Swift Current. Wilkins has just finished another statue, to be erected in the Kenaston area. Called The Lesson, it is a tribute to the First Nations women of Saskatchewan. A Cree mother is teaching her Métis child about the ways of her people and she is pointing to something in the distance.

Increases coming | Analysts believe prices will rise within weeks BY SEAN PRATT SASKATOON NEWSROOM
Doug Chorney pre-booked his spring fertilizer but didn’t lock in a price because he thought it was too high at the time. Last week he got a call from his anhydrous ammonia supplier. “They thought this was the time to price it,” said the farmer from East Selkirk, Man. Chorney locked in a price of $1,050 per tonne delivered to the farm, which is down from $1,100 before Christmas. “Although I’m not thrilled with that price, it is a little better,” he said. David Asbridge, president of NPK Fertilizer Advisory Service, thinks Chorney made a prudent decision. “We think we’re probably pretty close to the bottom of these markets,” said the U.S. analyst. The average wholesale price for urea in the U.S. Midwest for the first half of February was $440 per short ton, which is up slightly from a year ago but down sharply from the average of $537 in September 2011. Asbridge believes the freefall is nearly over and prices will start heading back up in the next two to four weeks as spring approaches. “(Farmers) probably should go ahead and start thinking about buying some of their fertilizer.” SEE TIME TO LOCK IN, PAGE 2

CFIA accused of misleading MPs | Union says only two percent of imports are inspected BY BARRY WILSON OTTAWA BUREAU
Food imports face far less rigorous inspection than Canadian food exports and the result is a Canadian population at risk, says the president of the union representing federal food inspectors. Bob Kingston, president of the agriculture union of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, also accused a senior

Canadian Food Inspection Agency official Feb. 15 of misleading MPs about the level of import inspection. Two days earlier, CFIA associate vice-president Paul Mayers told MPs that there is a common perception that imports are not as thoroughly inspected as exports or products destined for the Canadian market. “First, let me assure the committee that there is only one set of rules,” he said Feb. 13.
“Those rules apply to imports the same way they apply to products moving domestically. Indeed in the context of products that are exported, if there are additional considerations, those are not CFIA requirements.” Kingston said that is not true. “I hate to say this, but you’ve been seriously misinformed on a number of very important issues,” he told MPs.
