A message from the OF AGRICULTURE

Minister

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you my home province of Saskatchewan for the 2011 Canadian Western Agribition. In more than four decades of operation, this exhibition has become one of the world’s foremost agricultural events. In recent years, it has attracted close to 150,000 visitors from over fifty different countries, many of whom are looking to make business connections in Canada, find out more about our purebred livestock genetics, take in state-of-the-art agricultural technology and equipment, or enjoy many other wonderful activities that take place as part of the show. Canadian farmers produce a wide range of outstanding agricultural products, much of which is marketed throughout the world. As a result, Canada enjoys a reputation as a reliable producer of safe, high-quality food. Our Government is pleased to be able to provide support for organizations like the Canadian Western Agribition to create new business opportunities for our exporters and help market Canadian agricultural products and services to the world. Through the Agri Marketing Program, the Government of Canada proudly invests in the Agribition’s marketing efforts, as well as its International Business Centre, which provides a perfect spot where Canadian exporters and international buyers can get together and do business. The 2011 Western Canadian Agribition will allow you to see Canada as a great place to live and to do business. Enjoy your visit!!

A new Chapter in Canadian Beef Marketing

Canada Beef Inc.

A new chapter in Canadian beef marketing On July 1, 2011 Canada Beef Inc. became the official, independent marketing agency for Canadian beef. The Beef Information Centre (BIC) and Canada Beef Export Federation (CBEF) joined the Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency (National Check-Off Agency- NCOA) and are now operating as one organization, Canada Beef Inc. The goals for the organization for the first six months will be to complete all aspects of merging three distinct organizations and to remain focused on the key priorities of the business of marketing and promoting Canadian beef: 1. Build awareness for a Canadian beef identity/ brand built on benefits defined by a strong and clear value proposition

2. Achieve growth in traditional, existing, new and emerging markets for Canadian beef or Canadian genetics products

3. Maximize the total value realized by the Canadian beef and cattle genetics industry through optimization of carcass values or genetics and live cattle values

Canada Beef Inc. is an independent national organization representing the marketing and promotion interests of the Canadian cattle and beef industry worldwide.

Agribition Welcome to Canadian Western Agribition! On behalf of the Board of Directors, Executive and staff, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us at Western Canada’s premiere agriculture and entertainment event. Agribition’s founders had a vision of creating a world class event to bring people together to showcase the best of what agriculture has to offer. What they could not have predicted was the success Agribition would become and how the event would leave a lasting impact on so many people. Agribition offers something for rural and urban audiences, men and women, and people of all ages.

Our History

Agribition began in 1970 as a dream by two Saskatchewan livestock men, Chris Sutter and Jim Lewthwaite, who believed there was a need to develop a major fall agricultural show in Western Canada. Centrally located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Agribition has grown to become the largest show of beef in Canada, as well as a significant show for bison, goats, sheep, horses and stock dogs. Buyers from around the world gather at our show to invest in some of the highest quality livestock on the planet.

An Economic Engine

While Agribition’s origins are agricultural, our economic impact benefits everyone in Saskatchewan. With well over 125,000 visitors in six days, Agribition generates $27 million a year of direct economic benefits to Regina and the province of Saskatchewan.

A Consumer Crossroads

Looking for the perfect Christmas gift? You’ve come to the right place. If you thought that Agribition’s trade show was just tractors and saddles, you are much mistaken. Of course, we have those things but also a whole lot more. Our trade show is one of the largest in Western Canada, covering over a quartermillion square feet and attracting over 400 vendors from around the world. Our vendors cover the gamut of products including lifestyles, sport and recreation, energy efficiency and home improvement. If you own a cabin or acreage, you’ll find many innovative products. When it comes to recreation, there is something for everyone, no matter whether your passion is football, hockey, boats or recreational vehicles. Hobbyists and homeowners will also find themselves overwhelmed by the shopping choices.

Adrenalin Overload

IS FOR EVERYONE!

you are in the same category. Agribition hosts the single largest semi-pro circuit finals in Canada — the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo. We offer a rare opportunity for our guests to witness elite athletic competition that requires as much skill as anything you would see in the Olympics but is considerably more dangerous. This is the original extreme sport. You don’t have to be a cowboy or know anything about horses to enjoy an evening of thrills and spills at the CCA Finals Rodeo. Bring your kids and jump on board Agribition’s theme nights at each rodeo. Every night offers a different theme. Get out, bring the family and experience all the action of live entertainment at the CCA Finals Rodeo.

Our Commitment to the Next Generation

From its inception, Agribition has been an event for the whole family. We make special efforts every year to provide opportunities to educate and entertain the next generation. Agribition touches each of us in a different way. For those of us raised on a farm, Agribition evokes memories of 4-H, food and fun. For the many people I meet from the city, Agribition is a conduit to connect an urban audience to farm animals. Many young people’s only chance to get close to agriculture happens once a year at Agribition. Our agricultural exhibitors have a wonderful story to tell about the products they produce and practices they use to produce safe, reliable food. In many cases, this story is told through the animals themselves; in other cases, it is told through works of art or other displays. Agribition offers an ideal atmosphere for education. Every year, we host over 5,000 local children through our formal schools program and many more through informal visits. We offer educational opportunities in a fun environment through Agri-Ed Auction where schoolchildren participate in a mock stock auction. As well, we have lots of family-friendly events – from stock dog competitions to draft horse demonstrations – that are pure fun. Agribition offers educational experiences bigger than any classroom.

Take Another Look

Agribition has been here for 41 years. Over that time, we have changed and evolved a great deal. There is more to our story than meets the eye. We are a world-class trade event. No matter whether you are from the farm or city, you owe it to yourself to check us out. I guarantee you will be surprised. Enjoy your visit to Agribition!

We all think it’s pretty silly when we hear about people in New York who have never visited the Statue of Liberty or people in Toronto who have never been up the CN Tower. If you live in Western Canada and you have never been to a rodeo,

November 2011

BURNING OF THE AGRIBITION

Brand

Throughout the history of the west, brands have had an almost heraldic quality — like a cattleman’s coat of arms, if you will. Brands not only identified an owner or a ranch, but also provided a set of traditions and a unique sense of identity for the cowboys. It is with this same tradition and honor that Agribition brands each show with a unique sense of loyalty to the visions of those who have persevered over the years to build the internationally renowned event. Dignitaries ranging from princes to politicians to hockey stars have performed the Burning of the Agribition Brand at past shows. In 2011, the ceremony pays tribute to Agribition’s commitment to the visionaries who planted the seed of Saskatchewan’s most successful livestock and trade show. The “Burning of the Agribition Brand” will take place Monday, November 21st in the Brandt Centre The burning of the CWA brand is a longstanding in tradition that ties each annual Agribition to the one before. Be sure to attend this year’s event occurring in conjunction with the 41st show celebrations in the Brandt Centre.

AGRIBITION TRADE SHOW BRINGS

World’s Best TO CONSUMERS

The doors of the Agribition Trade Show will open Monday, November 21st and are open daily from 10 a.m. throughout the week of the show. The trade show encompasses over 250,000 square feet and over four hundred exhibiting business, separated into showcases for your convenience. “Trade has always been our main mission at Agribition. We started off 41 years ago building this show to trade in livestock but we didn’t stop there. We added agribusiness products and then we expanded on that. Every year, our trade show gets bigger, better and more diverse. I’ve heard visitors say that they spent the whole day at Agribition and never left the trade show.” says Reed Andrew chair of the Agribition Trade Show committee.

This year the trade show is presenting FIVE major themes: Agribusiness

Still the heart and soul of Agribition, the agriculture industry is a key part of our trade show. Producers depend on the Agribusiness Showcase to find innovative products to make their operations more efficient and profitable. The Agribusiness Showcase features crop and livestock equipment and services, general farm equipment and tools, vehicles, tractors and trailers. A “I’ve heard visitors specialized Equine Showcase features say that they spent equipment, services and products the whole day at to meet the unique needs of horse Agribition and never owners. Agribusiness exhibitors are left the trade show.” located in the Credit Union EventPlex, — Reed Andrew Co-operators Centre, Prairie Building, Auditorium Annex and Ag-Ex Pavilion.

Education

Look for the vast array of lifestyle displays in Banner Hall, Agribition Building, Brandt Centre Concourse and Link.

Consumers today are becoming more and more keenly aware of the quality of the food they buy. Organic food and countryof-origin labelling are two major examples of this trend. As well, young people today have a growing interest in the environment and their food choices. The showcase in Arena 3 Co-operators Centre provides a host of information from many of Canada’s major food producer associations, as well as displays from the Saskatchewan Science Centre, Crown corporations and government agencies.

Sport/Recreation/Tourism

Lifestyles

Agribition doesn’t just host the biggest and best trade show in Saskatchewan. We are also top stop for food fans across the province – at least for meat lovers. If you are vegetarian, to be honest, this probably isn’t the place for you. As Canada’s premier livestock show, we are proud to offer visitors top quality beef in all its most popular forms – steaks, beef on a bun and hamburger to name a few. Our two feature restaurants – The Cattleman’s Cookhouse and The Agribition Cookhouse – serve up hearty, stick-to-your-ribs meals that will satisfy rural and urban visitors alike. Don’t miss our many other food sampling opportunities at the Bud Light Loading Chute beer gardens and other locations throughout the show.

This theme covers a wide range of products and services designed to appeal to the needs of individual consumers. Looking for the perfect gift? Trying to get in shape? Need advice on family finances? This is the place for you. The Lifestyles Showcase includes vendors offering: Arts and crafts Food products Health and nutrition Fashion Home products Personal services such as insurance, investment and estate/ financial planning.

‘Work hard and play hard’ is a motto we can all appreciate no matter whether we work in the city or the country. The Agribition Trade Show offers many ways for you to kick back during a well-earned break. Whether you are looking for tourism opportunities, sporting goods or entertainment products, you’ll find it at the Sports/Recreation/Tourism Showcase located in the Banner Hall.

Agribition High School Rodeo

Extreme sports are growing in popularity all around the world, but an event rooted in North American culture is still growing. The rodeo has been a long-standing tradition at Canadian Western Agribition, but for the first time High School Rodeo will be a featured event. “Like in any sport, the ones who are athletic do well and the ones who aren’t get tougher,” says Howard Floyd, head of the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association. “Agribition offers a platform for high school kids to show us their talents. It means a lot to these young competitors to be at such a prestigious event,” says Marty Seymour, CEO and General Manager of Canadian Western Agribition. Elementary school children can compete from grades

6-8 in the junior high rodeo and, obviously, the high school is for students in grades 9-12. While not a school sport per se, the Rodeo Association follows the school calendar and after the a series of fall and spring events, the top five in each age division move on to the national finals in June (Galup, Mexico for the juniors and Rock Springs, Wyoming for the high schools). While rodeo is steeped in the traditions of ranching, nearly half of the competitors come from urban centers, getting their start by having horses they board out at nearby farms. In all, there are 10 events – saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, pole bending, barrel racing, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping.

Watch Young Cowboys & Cowgirls Ride! The Junior & High School Rodeo events will be held in the Brandt Centre early Monday morning. FIRST LADY CLASSIC and FIRST LADY FUTURITY SPONSORED BY MERCK ANIMAL HEALTH

There are few, if any, events in the Canadian livestock industry as prestigious as the Agribition First Lady Classic. This event – the first interbreed competition of the week – sizes up the best yearling bred heifers. “This is a high-calibre show that spotlights the best in the breeds. It is an interbreed show which is rather unique. It gets very competitive among the breeds and undoubtedly there are bragging rights that come with it. Our competitors represent the future of the breeds for years to come,” says Barry Young, chair of the First Lady Classic. The First Lady Classic Futurity is a partner event showcasing previous First Lady competitors and their calves. “This is the proof of the pudding. The futurity event shows what the heifers have produced with their progeny.” A bonus prize is awarded if the Futurity winner is last year’s First Lady or Reserve Champion. If neither wins, the bonus prize carries over and builds next year.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET

The Market Steer Show & Sale

Sponsored By: Blair’s Crop and Livestock SOLUTIONS, University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture and Bioresourses

There is a certain sense of closure that comes with the Market Steer Show and Sale. “This is the end point for us in the cattle business. Everything that we do leads up to producing animals to satisfy the consumer market,” says committee chair Dr. Grant Royan. The show demonstrates the qualities that go into a good market animal. The top show steers from each class are sized up and a Grand Champion selected.

A great enhancement to the market steer program this year is the sale of the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion to kick off the highly anticipated Winners Circle auctioneers’ competition (see page 41 for more details.). These champions will remain on display for the duration of Agribition. The event this year will be held on Tuesday, November 22nd in the Stadium.

A GLOBAL MARKETPLACE

Purebred Beef Shows

Canadian Western Agribition is not just about shows and displays. It is also a vital crossroads for a sophisticated multi-million dollar international industry – the cattle industry. Canadian Western Agribition is known as the largest purebred beef livestock show in Canada, where over 1,600 head of North America’s best cattle are on display. “Our purebred beef shows, auctions and private sales make Canadian Western Agribition a vital part of the marketing programs of livestock producers from around the world,” said beef show chair Bruce Holmquist. Twelve breeds will compete starting Wednesday, November 23rd, including: Angus – Red and Black Charolais Gelbvieh Speckle Park (National Show) Limousin Maine-Anjou Simmental Shorthorn Herefords – Horned and Polled (National Shows)

NEVER TOO YOUNG

To Beef It Up Youth Cattle Events

Sponsored By: BMO Bank of Montreal, John Deere and TD Canada Trust Agricultural Services. “Get ‘em when they’re young” has been a motto of the cattle industry for generations. In the cattle business, young people are not just the “ranchers of tomorrow.” Many of them are already actively involved in the beef production cycle. Canadian Western Agribition’s youth programming includes four events scheduled from Monday, November 21st through to Saturday, November 26th. The junior events kick off with the Canadian National 4-H and Youth Judging Competition, starting November 21st. Sixty-five competitors from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States will have to judge multiple species of livestock. The competitors will examine live cattle, analyze and explain the market qualities of the livestock. Youth events continue on November 22nd with Youth Showmanship and Team Grooming Competitions. Youth Showmanship evolves each youth being judged on how well they present their animal in the show ring. Team Grooming is a competition between teams of three, the team has a set amount of time to groom and prepare the animal to show ring standard. On November 26th Agribition will once again host the

Canadian Junior Beef Extreme, a multi-breed competition for female cattle prepared by young competitors from across the country. “The great thing about this event is that it is exclusively for juniors. It is tailored to them, including a younger judge who can relate to the participants,” says Junior Beef Extreme chair Levi Jackson.

Our Ancient Heritage FIRST NATIONS PAVILION

Traditions are meant to guide us, not lead us. Who would know more about traditions than our First Nations communities. An idea that has been in the works for 12 years, has finally taken flight. Elmer Eashappie is a member of the Carry the Kettle Nakoda First Nation near Indian Head. In 1999, Elmer started a campaign to bring a stronger First Nations presence to Agribition. After many years of planning, Eashappie and Agribition are proud to launch the First Nations Pavilion at this year’s show. “We are always looking for ways to make Agribition broader and more appealing to different audiences. A first Nations Pavilion fits very well with the education portion of our show; something both urban and rural visitors will find interesting.” says Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. The pavilion covers one-quarter of a hockey arena in size and offers many informative and entertaining displays. Elders and storytellers will be on hand to share native culture. Crafts people will demonstrate making bows and dream catchers. Visitors will be able to learn a little about the diversity and elegance of First Nations language. “People will be able to learn to say a few words, like ‘cow’ or ‘farm,’ in the five major languages of southern Saskatchewan: Cree, Dakota, Lakota, Nakoda and Saulteaux,” says Eashappie. “Of course, it won’t all be educational. We will also showcase First Nations drummers, dancers and other entertainment,” says Eashappie. The Pavilion has great potential to grow in future years. A cross cultural exchange of this magnitude is certain to draw some attention. What better place to showcase something so powerful, than at Agribition. YES, WE’VE “GOT MILK”

Dairy Industry Showcase Sponsored By: SaskMilk

Some Agribition events appeal mainly to the trained eye of the livestock producer. Our dairy displays, on the other hand, have proven consistently fascinating to consumers and producers alike. “Of course everyone knows milk comes from cows but we don’t always think about that when we pick up a jug at the grocery store. Agribition gives consumers a chance to get back in touch with the source of their food and see where milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products come from,” says Agribition dairy chair Paul Johnson. Live milking demonstrations will be held four times daily from Monday, November 21st through to Friday, November 25th. Representatives from the Saskatchewan Holstein Association will be on hand to answer questions from the general public about the dairy industry. Representatives from SaskMilk have an additional display at Dairyanna Square in the Agribition Building, featuring information on a wide range of dairy products.

Producers from around the world will also be able to appreciate the display of Canadian purebred dairy genetics. Information on Canadian breeding programs, a directory of breeders and specific genetic information are also available at the showcase.

Prospects Steer and Heifer Show Sponsored by: Merck Animal Health

4-H club members, steer show supporters, and producers looking for potential heifers plan to attend Agribition’s Prospect Calf Show and Sale. On Saturday, November 26th in the Auditorium, heifers and steers compete for champion banners. All calves must be pre-conditioned and undergo a strict selection process upon arrival at Agribition. Following the show all calves will be sold at auction. “This show and sale offers families a great opportunity to purchase a future champion for producers wanting to improve their herd genetics” says Bruce Holmquist chair of the Agribition’s Prospect Steer and Heifer committee.

THE COMMERCIAL

Side Of Things

Commercial Cattle Show and Sale Sponsored by: Pfizer Animal Health and Saskatchewan Credit Unions “The livestock industry is big business in Canada. Agribition’s Commercial Cattle Show and Sale is a vital part of the growth and development of that industry,” says Commercial Cattle Show chair Reed Andrew. The show’s components include Heifer Alley and Futurity, Bull Pen Alley, Feeder Steers and Heifers, Open Replacement Heifers and Bred Heifers. The Heifer Alley Show features pens of five open replacement heifers. Producers are allowed to present the best their commercial cattle operations have to offer. These pens are show only and do not sell. A futurity allows producers to bring back the original pen to compete in Bred Heifer and Cow/ calf classes to demonstrate the strength of a strong breeding program. Bull Pen Alley will see pens of three purebred bulls exhibited in ranch condition with no extra fitting for the show. “There is a great atmosphere at this event that brings out the best in our industry. This is the first year we will be featuring two-year olds with their calves at their sides in the futurity classes,” says Andrew.

Judging will take place Friday, November 25th in the Stockman’s Arena. Championship banners will be awarded in all components Agribition’s Commercial Cattle Sale takes place Saturday, November 26th in the Stockman’s Arena.

LEAN ON…

Bison

Canadian National Bison Show and Sale Both fancy chefs and average consumers are becoming more aware of the special qualities of bison. While bison may be a novel product for some people, it has a long tradition at Canadian Western Agribition. “Agribition has helped in the building process for the bison industry for many years, and it has paid off. People all over the world are getting excited about the rich flavour and the healthy, lean qualities of bison,” Agribition bison chair John Simpson says. Canadian National Bison Show and Sale gives bison breeders the opportunity to improve their own breeding programs as well as market themselves to the international community. The Bison will be stalled in the Commercial Cattle Barn on Monday, November 21st (limited viewing). The Canadian National Bison Sale takes place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 22nd in the Stockman’s Arena.

MOLDING YOUNG MINDS

Agri-Ed Showcase

Sponsored by: Federated Co-operatives Limited, SaskEnergy, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and TD Canada Trust Agriculture Services. They say that we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors but borrow it from our children. The Agri-Ed Showcase is a great example of how Agribition has put that philosophy into practice. The award winning Agri-Ed Showcase is celebrating its 25th year. Agri-Ed teaches young people about the producer’s role as an environmental steward and as a producer of the food they eat. Each year, more than 5,000 elementary students in grades K to 6, along with their teachers and parents, visit the exhibit. “I am really excited about Agri-Ed’s 25th appearance at Agribition. We have moved to a new space and have lots of things to see and do in our Showcase and in the surrounding area. Agri-Ed is not just for school classes, but is for the whole family to enjoy learning about our great industry of agriculture,” says Agri-Ed co-chair Terry Bedard. The popular Agri-Ed Auction, one of our longest running programs, is back once again. Class groups learn the value of their “Agri-Ed dollars” as they bid on livestock in a mock auction with a real auctioneer. Agribition’s Agri-Ed Showcase, located in the Co-operators

The Grand Finale!

The John Deere Parade of Champions and RBC Beef Supreme Challenge

At Canadian Western Agribition, we make sure to do things in a big way with the John Deere Parade of Champions and the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge. The parade assembles all purebred beef Grand Champion bulls and females from the Agribition show rings into one exhibition of the best beef genetics. The parade begins at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 26th in the Stadium. Following the parade is one of the premier international events of the beef livestock world, the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge – what some have dubbed the “Supreme Court” of North American beef. Grand Champions of all breeds from 17 major livestock shows across North America are invited to compete against

Agribition’s Grand Champion Bulls and Females. This event hosts the elite of the cattle world and represents beef cattle genetics valued in the millions. The RBC Beef Supreme Challenge is judged by a panel of five respected cattle industry producers. The judges remain anonymous until they are introduced as they walk into the arena for one of the toughest tasks of their cattle judging careers. Be sure to be at ringside to see this impressive display of beef genetics and to share in the excitement of the moment when the judges slap those two special animals that will become renowned as the 2011 Canadian Western Agribition RBC Beef Supreme Champions.

PULLING

Their Weight Horse Pulls

Their nobility & strength are so legendary that to this day we measure work capacity with a single word: horsepower. “One of Agribition’s most popular and impressive shows is the Canadian Horse Pull Finals. The horse pulls remind us of our pioneer heritage and of the partnership between man and animal,” says Horse Pull chair Dr. Grant Royan. Fans of the Horse Pull Finals can see the Lightweight and Middleweight divisions pull on Wednesday, November 23rd and the Heavyweight division pulls on Thursday, November 24th. All action takes place in the Brandt Centre. The key to success in this event is an even pull with two powerful horses. Perfect unison is required as they skid a weighted sled foot by foot and inch by inch across the arena floor. Weights will be added after each successful 14-foot pull

Pull Your Own Weight! The Horse Pull Sponsor Auction

until only one team remains. These powerful animals can pull more than 10,000 pounds when they work together under the skilful guidance of their teamster. “It’s exciting to watch the teamsters working together with their teams. It is a real partnership of man and animal.”

The horse pull events offer a special sponsorship opportunity for Agribition spectators. You can share in the fame and prowess of the noble draft horses by sponsoring a team to carry your name

during the competitions. Please join us for the Horse Pull Sponsor Auction as part of the Winners Circle auctioneers’ competition. See page 41 for more details.

SERIOUS

Horsing Around

Ranch Horse Competition and Sale and Team Cattle Penning The partnership between man and horse is thousands of years old and it is far from over, according to Grant Royan, chair of the light horse events. “People forget that horses are still used as working animals. On a ranch, there are still many things that a horse can do and many places a horse can go that a piece of machinery simply can’t,” Royan says. Agribition has a number of events that showcase the highadrenalin world of horses and cowboys. Canada’s Premier Select Ranch Horse Competition and Sale sponsored by Merial Canada Inc. is held Friday, November 25th. The Competition gives spectators a chance to witness the skills of some of Canada’s finest working horses. The Sale provides an important marketplace for ranchers looking to acquire a new four-legged assistant. The Team Cattle Penning event demonstrates some of the practical skills of cattle herding. Riders, grouped in teams of three, must work together to separate designated animals from the herd, corral them in a panel enclosure in the middle of the arena before time runs out. Don’t miss the action Thursday, November 24th and Saturday, November 26th.

GONE TO

The Dogs

The International Stock Dog Championship Trials Fans of the movie Babe know that stock dog championships are very competitive. Except for one fictional pig, stock dogs are the best helpers a stockman can have. “This event is a crowd pleaser. It’s fascinating to watch the dogs and handlers show off their skills. The dogs are very highly trained and so are the handlers,” says International Stock Dog Championship committee chair Arnold Manske. Handlers use hand signals, voice commands and whistles to direct their dogs in maneuvering a small flock of sheep through a pattern and back to the pen. Relying on their natural instincts and guidance from their handlers, the dogs weave, twist and maneuver the group as well as turn back any sheep that try to break away. This event will hold two trials on Tuesday, November 22nd in the Brandt Centre. Following the two trials, the top five dogs will compete for the championship during the CCA Finals Rodeo the same evening.

SEED = QUALITY

Quality Pedigreed Seed On Display Sponsored By: Bayer CropScience and Saskatchewan Seed Growers Association

You can’t miss it: just as you walk into the Co-operator’s Centre, you will find Agribition’s Pedigreed Seed Competition Display. The displays celebrate some of Canada’s greatest agricultural achievements. Western Canada has a worldwide reputation as a producer of high-quality crops. These displays represent the best of the best. Agribition’s Pedigreed Seed Competition Display represents the finest pedigreed grain, oilseed, pulse crops and forage seed grown in Western Canada. Although the seed displays are unassuming in some ways, they are important for all Canadians, not just farmers. According to Agribition committee chair Curtis Kuchinka, these seeds should be regarded as national treasures. “Quality seed is one of the best ways to ensure maximum production as a means to feed the world. There are many ways to maximize on-farm profit but seed is first and foremost.”

Hall of Fame

Introduced last year at the 40th anniversary celebrations, the Hall of Fame is aimed at recognizing people & organizations that have made an enduring contribution to the show. “Although this is a new part of our program, we are confident that it will grow into a great tradition in years to come,” says Agribition President Bryan Hadland. Last year the Hall of Fame honoured the five original founders of the show. That was an obvious choice for the inaugural event but this year the choice became a little harder. Agribition began accepting nominations in April and, from the many good suggestions that

came forward, three names were selected for this year’s induction ceremony. “The people selected this year are exactly the sort of people we were looking for when we created this distinction. They are all long-time exhibitors, volunteers & promoters of Agribition who are also well-known & respected members of the agriculture industry in general,” said Gary Anderson, chair of the Hall of Fame committee. The 2011 Agribition Hall of Fame inductees will be announced by show president Bryan Hadland at the Burning of the Brand event. The inductees will be further honoured at Agribition’s Volunteer Night in February.

AUCTION

What’s on Your

Action

Winners circle competitions Winners are lucky - just ask any loser! But at the Agribition Winners Circle, there is no luck involved. It takes skill, dedication and hard work. The Winners Circle is new to Agribition this year; we have combined the sale of the Grand & Reserve Champion Market Steer, the Horse Pull Sponsor Auction, an Auctioneer Competition and a reception into one exciting event! The Auctioneers Competition sponsored by Ritchie Bros. will have each Auctioneer compete by auctioning off, either a horse pull team in the sponsor auction or exciting items donated by an exhibitor or sponsor. Auctioneers from all over Canada will show their stuff and have your toes tapping to their chant. The best auctioneer will win the prestigious prize of being crowned Agribition’s best auctioneer The Winners Circle offers an exciting opportunity for show goers to get a taste of a cattle show, the horse pulls, and an auction with all the social camaraderie CWA is famous for, don’t miss it!

Cowboys & Smart Phones Text wrangling and app roping “I do a lot of are not yet official rodeo events texting with but that day may not be far off. Go to any rodeo these days and clients and you are apt to see a cowboy on suppliers when horseback checking his emails on I’m on the road.” his Blackberry. Cowboys in the 21st — Cody Getz century are increasingly “plugged in” wherever they go. Rodeo is not your everyday sport. Countless hours of preparation, not to mention the thousands of miles these cowboys put on every year, certainly require an outside the box approach to time management. For many rodeo athletes, their electronic tools have less to do with bucking broncos and more to do with their lives outside the rodeo. “For those of us who have the rodeo addiction in our blood, it takes a lot of juggling to stay on top of our jobs in the ‘real world’ that help pay for our hobby.” says Marty Seymour, CEO and General Manager of Agribition. Cody Getz, a 14-year veteran of the rodeo circuit, has this experience with his contracting business. “I do a lot of texting with clients and suppliers when I’m on the road. I don’t know if I’ve actually been in the saddle but there definitely have been times when I’ve been getting ready and I’ve been known to be texting employees that work for us or customers that we work for,” says Getz. Today’s contestants are constantly on the internet checking the animal they drew at a rodeo, or looking for results and season standings. “I can file my entries through email, check online to see when I was drawn and check the entry dates and prize money

of upcoming events,” says Getz. Networking is just as important on the rodeo circuit as anywhere else. It is no surprise the phone directory of the modern day cowboy would fill the software bank in any device as they continually contact each other with information about the rodeo stock and well- being of their fellow competitors. “It can be a significant advantage to know if a steer runs fast or slow, and I like to get the complete story from other contestants who had my animal at the previous rodeo,” notes Getz. The next time you are at a rodeo, and you see a cowboy who just got stomped in the mud, don’t look surprised to see him behind the chutes on his smartphone on the internet cleaning up some e-mails or placing an entry for the next eight second ride.

AGRIBITION WELCOMES

The World

Sponsored By: AGRICULTURE and AGRI-FOOD CANADA Agribition is not just a Saskatchewan or a Canadian event. It is a truly world-class showcase. If you look closely as you walk around the show grounds, you will see the flags of dozens of nations on the lapels of Agribition’s international guests. Every year, we attract visitors from every continent on the globe. In 2010, we drew 789 international visitors from 79 countries such as Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Australia, United States, United Kingdom and European countries. Our international guests come for the opportunity to view the superior livestock genetics, new agriculture technologies and state of the art equipment on display. Agribition is pleased to invite all our international guests to take advantage of the services of our International Business Centre (IBC). The IBC provides a hub for both business and socializing. The IBC provides international guests with complimentary business services including internet access, business equipment, meeting space, and access to translation services as well as import/export information. For Canadian members, there

are added benefits such as being able to display promotional materials and gaining access to the international buyer lists. The dividends from this component of Agribition are both immediate and long-term. Each year, the Agribition auction reports include sales of live animals or genetic packages in the form of embryos or semen to visitors from abroad. There are also many private treaty transactions negotiated in the barns and after the show. Most important, however, are the networking opportunities where buyers and sellers make contact and start the discussions that later blossom into significant international sales.

THANK YOU TO OUR

Volunteers! Agribition does not come together by accident. It is the product of the hard work of over 400 volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to making the show a positive experience for everyone who attends. “We simply could not run a show of this size without volunteers. If we had to pay for all those person-hours, we couldn’t afford to put on the show,” says Shannon McArton, chair of the Volunteer Program. The volunteer commitment goes on all year long. The planning for next year’s show begins, quite literally, immediately after this year’s show – if not sooner! Our board members and committee volunteers contribute endless hours month after month to nail down the details of the upcoming show. The volunteer commitment doesn’t stop when the show

starts. We depend on dozens of people who provide support for the rodeos, the livestock shows and youth programming events such as the Agri-Ed showcase. “Our volunteers do what they do out of dedication. These are people who are passionate about what they do. I have worked with many volunteer organizations and I have never run into any group of people so invested in their volunteer service as we see at Agribition.”
