A message from the Minister OF AGRICULTURE A warm Saskatchewan welcome from the Harper Government to Canadian Western Agribition 2012. Innovation and trade help Canada’s farmers compete and Agribition continues to do a great job on both fronts, by showcasing Canada’s agriculture industry, including our world-class livestock and also our grain industry, with this year’s new Grain Expo. Likewise, our Government continues to open up new markets around the world for our farmers by promoting science-based trade, while investing to build a strong food safety system here at home. We’re proud to support the International Business Centre at Agribition to help connect buyers with our world-leading livestock genetics. Looking ahead, the new five-year federal-provincial-territorial agreement on agriculture will help farmers meet growing global demand for food, with proactive investments in innovation, market development and competitiveness. There is an exciting future for Canada’s agriculture sector, and Agribition will have a key part to play. Best wishes for a productive visit.

O

n behalf of our 200 employees, let me be the first one to welcome you to the 2012 Canadian Western Agribition. If you think Agribition is the same old thing, you might want to look again... There have been many changes in the last 42 years, but the fundamentals still remain. We are the best beef show in North America and have no plans to give up our title! Being the best at something allows us to focus and grow a host of other events at the show.

Facility Improvement

As the show develops, so does our investment in the programming and property. For the first time in many years, Agribition has been in a position to invest in our facilities and improve the experience for our show exhibitors and visitors. We have built a brand new building this year to accommodate the need for improved show and sale space. I encourage you to check out the brand new Commercial Cattle Barn Arena located just outside the Stockman’s Arena.

Expanded Trade Show Offerings

Agribition’s trade show is the fourth largest in Canada and features more than 500 exhibitors. Increased trade and consumer space has allowed us to further grow our offerings to grain farmers across the country. You will see more dry land farming technologies and equipment exhibits than ever before. Be sure to check out the Machinery Mall in The Co-operators Centre. If you thought Agribition’s trade show was just tractors and saddles, you are mistaken. Of course, we have those things, but also a whole lot more! “Our Everyday Living Marketplace” offers a unique retail shopping experience with a wide range of products and services. You will find everything from purses to kitchen gadgets, health products to home decor, and plenty more. It’s the perfect place to shop for everyone on your Christmas list!

Our Commitment to the Next Generation

One of our proudest achievements as an organization is our investment in youth and education. We make special efforts every year to provide opportunities to educate and entertain the next generation. This year Agribition will host over 6,000 children as part of our Agri-Ed program. Children will learn about food production, watch live milking demonstrations and take part in the popular Agri-Ed Auction. As we move into the future, Agribition will play an even bigger role educating our youth as the urban rural split continues to grow. This year we have expanded our newly named Family Ag Pavilion to include even more activities. We encourage families to visit the pavilion, located in The Co-operators Centre, to learn about agriculture and see their favorite farm animals.

Adrenalin Overload

Like our beloved Roughriders and Craven’s Country Jamboree, Agribition has become an entertainment icon. We continue to attract new visitors to the show thirsty to hear about the legends of the Swamp, or join in the fun at the Bud Light Loading Chute. You don’t have to be a cowboy or know anything about horses to enjoy an evening of thrills and spills at the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo. Come and experience the biggest, most exciting and most prestigious semi-pro rodeo competition in the country. No matter what your interests are, you are sure to leave our show with a smile and a memory. We are proud of the enhancements we have made at this year’s show. I guarantee you will see more new things than ever before. See you at Agribition!

Proud to be C anadian Western Agribition is home to the largest annual indoor livestock and commercial trade show events in Canada. Being one of the biggest isn’t the only thing that makes our show so appealing.

F

or serious buyers and sellers, the quality of a show is perhaps more important than its size. Over the course of the show, Agribition has built a reputation as the best beef show in Canada and possibly North America. Chris Poley with T Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd., calls Agribition a “must-attend” event. “Without a doubt, it is the best show in Canada. It draws the biggest international crowd in the country. It is understood to be the place in Canada where the best cattle will be showcased.” “At this show, we are able to put on offer the highest quality genetics to over 800 visitors from more than 70 countries,” says Agribition CEO Marty Seymour. The show’s reputation in the cattle world is built on the sheer number of breeds on display. In any given year, over 11 different breeds are represented. Agribition is also the last event on the cattle show calendar each year which gives it the unique opportunity to host the best of the best. “The RBC Beef Supreme Challenge at Agribition has the privilege each year of crowning the champion of champions. We invite the Supreme Champions or the Grand Champions of all breeds from

18 major livestock shows across North America to compete against Agribition’s Grand Champion Bulls and Females. We crown the best bull and best female of all major breeds in the country if not the continent. No other show can claim that,” Seymour says. Outside of the competitions, Agribition has also built a solid reputation for its opportunities for international sales. “There are only a few US shows that are larger in size than ours, but they do not put as much emphasis on international marketing. We put a lot of effort into hosting international visitors, making sure they’re comfortable and doing everything we can to make an atmosphere conducive for breeders and visitors to strike international deals,” Seymour says. The show typically brings in around $2 million in “official” sales through auctions hosted on the grounds. But there are also millions of dollars in private deals struck outside the auction ring which makes Agribition’s total impact on the global beef trade difficult to measure. The brisk business done at Agribition also pays dividends to the local economy. Seymour estimates that the show pumps approximately $27 million into the November 2012

Saskatchewan economy each year. The Regina Hotel Association has estimated that hotel occupancy in the city jumps by as much as 100 per cent during the week of the show. In fact, it is typically hard to find a last-minute hotel room in Regina during Agribition. All these facts and figures provide ample evidence of the show’s achievements, but just like square footage, the dollars and cents of Agribition can’t convey the show’s biggest advantage. “What many people don’t realize is that Agribition is almost entirely run by volunteers. Other shows that are physically larger have to employ staff. Our volunteer based organization creates a unique atmosphere. There is a passion among the people who work at the show to make it successful. The people working here aren’t just employees, coming here to earn a paycheque. They are people coming here with smiles on their faces because they are a part of something great,” says Seymour. “Agribition, from the beginning, has been built from the grassroots up. That, more than any other factor, is what I think makes us the best.”

Agribition Launches C

anadian Western Agribition continues to expand its profile as a multifaceted marketplace for all aspects of the agricultural industry. To this end, earlier this year Agribition announced the launch of its new Grain Expo. The Expo is part of the natural evolution of the show according to Marty Seymour, CEO of Canadian Western Agribition. “Agribition is more than beef. We have a long history of serving prairie grain growers. It is a natural fit for Agribition to address the need for a southern Saskatchewan grain farm forum,” said Seymour. The Grain Expo will provide grain farmers the opportunity to see the latest technologies and hear guest speakers address modern grain industry issues ranging from fertilizer mineralization to grain marketing strategies. This two-day conference takes place November 20 and 21 in the Queensbury Salon. Just like the crops discussed at the forum, the Expo itself grew from the ground up. “The Grain Expo grew from the raw demand we heard from grain producers

and from the success of our expanded agribusiness trade show. A technical conference combined with expanded dry land farming equipment displays is going to make for an enhanced Agribition experience for our guests from the grain sector,” notes Seymour. Grain Expo is presented by Young’s Equipment of Regina. Kirby Engele, Operations Manager at Young’s Equipment asserts that the show will fill a void in producers’ information needs. “Timing is everything. Agribition comes just after harvest is over. It’s a great place for farmers to get together and learn about new products and services. We are proud to support this event and create a venue for farmers to grow their business,” said Engele. Producers interested in attending the Grain Expo can contact one of the supporting sponsors for more details: Young’s Equipment, Bayer CropScience, Federated Co-operatives Limited, Regina Hotel Association, SaskCanola, Dow AgroSciences, CIBC, Farm World and Cargill.

The speakers at the forum will include: Tuesday, November 20 10:30 a.m. Changing Prairie Landscape of Grain Marketing, Tyler Russell 11:30 a.m. The Evolution of Hybrid Canola, Dr. Greg Gingera Sponsored by Dow AgroSciences 1:30 p.m. The Prairie Economic Story — Is It Sustainable?, Paul Martin Sponsored by Young’s Equipment 2:30 p.m. The Future of Weed Control in Western Canada, Clark Brenzil 3:15 p.m. What the Heck is a Hashtag?, Lyndsey Smith Wednesday, November 21 10:30 a.m. Nitrogen & Sulfur Mineralization, Dr. Jeff Schoenau Sponsored by Bayer CropScience 11:30 a.m. The Growth of Healthy Oils Within the Food Industry, Tyler Groeneveld Sponsored by Dow AgroSciences 1:30 p.m. Canola Disease 2012 – What Happened!, Clint Jurke Sponsored by SaskCanola 2:30 p.m. Unravelling Agri-Stability, Doug Faller

griculture today is a vibrant and technologically-advanced industry. It is experiencing record growth and providing a better quality of life and more varied career opportunities than ever before. Through investment and innovation in research and biotechnology, support for sustainable farming and ranching practices, and commitment to high regulatory standards, agriculture is improving lives for people both here in Saskatchewan and around the world. Winners Circle Competition

Auctioneers prove the old adage that winners make their own luck. There is no luck involved in being a successful auctioneer. It takes skill, dedication, hard work and a quick tongue.

A

gribition visitors have always enjoyed watching and participating in some of the show’s high-stakes livestock auctions that go on throughout the week. At those events, it is the cattle not the auctioneer that is the centre of attention. The Winners Circle event turns that around by bringing together some of Western Canada’s top auctioneers for a competition of tongue-twisting talent. Competing auctioneers battle it out in front of a team of expert judges. The auctioneers will be selling off the naming rights for teams in the horse pull competitions as well as fundraising items for the Agribition Scholarship. Ward Cutler won the honours in last year’s inaugural competition. The former 2005 Canadian Livestock Auction Champion has honed his skills through a lifetime of connection with the trade. “I’ve been in the auctioneering business for 16 years but I’ve been fascinated with it all my life. As a kid in Carlyle, Saskatchewan, I loved to hang around the stockyards and just thought that was the best place to be,” says Cutler. But for all of his experience, Cutler admits that he was a bit outside his comfort zone at last year’s Winners Circle. “In other auctioneering competitions, you are selling livestock. In the Winners Circle, we were selling naming rights which was something I wasn’t used to. It was very interesting because it opened it up to everyone, not just people from the livestock industry. You had individuals, families and local businesses bidding for the rights.” Last year’s judges included not only professional

auctioneers and cattlemen but also a surprise celebrity auctioneer, Roughrider defensive tackle Keith Shologan. “What a lot of people probably didn’t realize was that Keith wasn’t just there for celebrity appeal – he was qualified. His family comes from a long ranching background so he knew what he was talking about.” As the 2011 winner, Cutler received a commemorative belt buckle and bragging rights, which he predicts will become more important as the event sets down roots. “This is definitely something that is going to grow into a prestigious award because that’s the trend we’ve seen with other competitions that Agribition has built over the years.” Cutler will be acting as a judge for this year’s competition and predicts that attendees will find it even more impressive than last year. “The audience certainly won’t be disappointed with the quality of competition. The participants will be the cream of the crop because that’s the way Agribition runs its competitions – they go out and recruit the best of the best.” The Winners Circle takes place Tuesday, November 20 in the Stadium. This event offers an exciting opportunity for show goers to get a taste of a cattle show, the horse pulls and an auction with all the social camaraderie Agribition is famous for. Don’t miss it!

At Agribition 2012 The Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo offers non-stop action and adrenaline with live rodeo and great theme events: Tuesday First Nations Night Wednesday Roughrider Pride Night Thursday Student Night Friday Regina Pats Night Saturday Family Day

From its inception, Agribition has been an event for the whole family.

A

gribition touches each of us in a different way. For those people raised on a farm, Agribition evokes memories of 4-H, food and fun. For city folk, Agribition is a chance to connect with farm animals and learn about agriculture and food production. “We have so many family-friendly events that we can’t wait to share with our visitors each and every year. We make a special effort to provide opportunities to educate and entertain every generation,” says Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. Monday features our Agribition High School Rodeo presented by Farm World. The rodeo features students from grades 6 to 12 competing in 10 events in the Brandt Centre. Join us on Saturday, November 24 for Family Day! Watch for the Mascot Parade at 10am traveling throughout the grounds, and get your face painted in The Co-operators Centre starting at 12pm. Come watch the rodeo stars of tomorrow in our Junior Roping Competition sponsored by SaskTel located in the Bud Light Loading Chute at 10am. The Brandt Centre schedule is jampacked with events suitable for every age and interest: Team Cattle Penning – A popular, high-energy light horse event featuring teams of three riders who must separate three specific cattle from a herd and then corral them in a pen – all in under 90 seconds! Wild Wool Ride sponsored by SaskMilk – Children have a chance to take a ride on “wild” sheep. The event runs twice in the

afternoon. Get your name in the draw by visiting the Canadian Cowboys’ Association booth in the Brandt Centre before 11:30am. Trick Riding Demo – Watch this young trick rider hang from her horse at top speeds, performing such tricks as the one leg stand and suicide drag. Regina Kennel Club Demo – This family favourite at Agribition features dogs displaying feats of agility and acrobatics. There will be a fly ball and agility demonstration followed by a meet-and-greet with the dogs. Don’t forget there are plenty of events during the week that are family-friendly too including the stock dog, horse pulls and team cattle penning competitions. Be sure to visit the Family Ag Pavilion for a fun, educational and hands-on experience. Another family favourite is the live milking demonstrations sponsored by SaskMilk in Barn 4. Families can come watch the demonstrations and ask questions of the Saskatchewan Holstein Association representatives on hand. The First Nations Pavilion is a wonderful way to connect with our First Nations. Enjoy story-telling with Elders, sit in a teepee, see traditional arts and crafts and wander among displays and artifacts. The Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo is presented by Ford and takes place in the Brandt Centre Tuesday to Saturday starting at 7 pm. See you and your family at the show!

Agribition is a wonderful place for all ages to come learn about agriculture in a fun, interactive way.

T

he newly named Family Ag Pavilion sponsored by Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and SaskEnergy is located in The Co-operators Centre. The pavilion is designed to educate both urban and rural youth about where the food on their table comes from. This year the pavilion will offer more hands-on activities for families as well as greater opportunity to become more involved in the learning process. Best of all – it’s fun! “I’m excited to see the new Family Ag Pavilion brand go forward this year. We’ve always had such positive feedback in the past from the public to these displays. Past offerings combined with new displays will offer even more for families. Our goal is to have more urban families exposed to the agriculture industry in a way that is both educational and entertaining,” said Family Ag Pavilion Chair, Carla Schmitt. Families can come to see and learn about their favorite farm animals including a potbelly pig, sheep, a miniature horse, chicks, a calf, a miniature donkey and an alpaca. Come watch a chick hatch, learn about wool production and get up close and personal with the animals being displayed. Each livestock display will have industry personnel on-hand to answer questions. A family trip to Agribition isn’t complete without seeing a Milking Demonstration. This exhibit, in Barn 4, is sponsored by SaskMilk and features demonstrations Monday to Saturday at 11:15 a.m., and 1:15 p.m. Each demonstration finishes with a brief talk by a veterinarian about the health and care of dairy cows.

Some of the exciting displays that will be featured at the FAP are: Honey Bees

An observation hive will be on display allowing children a safe, up-close sensory encounter with live honeybees.

Western College of Veterinary Medicine

A new display with veterinarians and vet students talking to families about animals and animal health.

Seed Spiral

Children get to take part in the seed separating process by dropping seeds through the spiral.

Saskatchewan Science Centre

Children will get an understanding of the various forms of farm equipment and how they work by building with K’NEX® pieces.

Enviro Art

November 2012

Families will be invited to “Spin to Win” with the Saskatchewan Arts Board and take part in creating a one-of-a-kind art card. Be sure to visit them on the second floor of the Cooperators Centre overlooking the Family Ag Pavilion, beside the Seed Spiral.

Grow New Traditions

Agribition is an event steeped in tradition – some very old but others quite new. In Western Canada, there are no traditions more ancient than those of the First Nations. Growing from those roots, Agribition is pleased to once again present the First Nations Pavilion.

E

stablished last year, the pavilion located in The Cooperators Centre, was the brainchild of Elmer Eashappie, a member of the Carry the Kettle Nakoda First Nation. Elmer has long sought to build a stronger First Nations presence at Agribition. The popularity of the display has quickly turned it into a new tradition at Agribition. Guests can expect the pavilion to be bigger and better than last year. “We’ve doubled the size of the First Nations Pavilion this year and that is purely a response to the popular demand from last year. The pavilion fits well with the education and community aspect of our show. It’s something both urban and rural visitors will find interesting,” says Marty Seymour, Agribition’s CEO. Exhibitors at the pavilion include the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Indian Culture Center, the First Nations University of Canada and the File Hills Tribal Council. “People will be able to learn to say a few words, like ‘horse’ or ‘hello,’ in the five major languages of southern Saskatchewan: Cree, Dakota, Lakota, Nakoda and Saulteaux,” says Eashappie. Clearly, there is a growing desire in Saskatchewan among both urban and rural visitors to Agribition to share and appreciate our province’s First Nations heritage. Agribition is proud to help spread cultural awareness and understanding.

The pavilion, which covers half a hockey arena, features a variety of informative, artistic and interactive displays, including:

■ World class drummers and champion dancers ■ Story telling ■ Presentations on Treaties ■ Contemporary and traditional craft makers ■ Guest speakers presenting on first nations economic development and growth ■ Elder stations where Elders will share traditional stories and help listeners understand the history of First Nations events and culture ■ Fun and interactive language stations

anadian Western Agribition is pleased to once again invite guests to the Brandt Centre to witness a wide range of equestrian events showcased throughout the week. Each year Agribition plays host to one of the nation’s most respected forums for ranch horses; Canada’s Premier Select Ranch Horse Competition and Sale. This premier event sets the standard for equine excellence in Canada. Trainers have the opportunity to show the skill and athleticism of their animals at the competition. Horses are judged on their ability to perform a set pattern as well as working cattle within a set time frame. The stakes are high in this prestigious event; the 2012 prize pool will total $10,000. The competition gives spectators a chance to witness the skills of some of Canada’s finest working horses. The sale provides an important marketplace for ranchers looking to acquire a new four-legged assistant. Canada’s Premier Select Ranch Horse Competition and Sale sponsored by Merial Canada Inc. takes place Friday, November 23.

27

Canadian Cowboys’ Association

Not only is Agribition the best cattle show in North America it has evolved to be home of some of North America’s finest rodeo action as well.

E

ach year, Agribition hosts the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo presented by Ford – the biggest, most exciting and most prestigious semi-pro rodeo competition in the country. “The rodeo athletes who come to Regina are the best of the best. Over the course of the year, they compete in over 60 rodeos with the top 11 competitors from each event making it to the Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo. This event is a chance for Saskatchewan people to see a world-class sporting event with performances at a level you can’t see in many other places,” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. The Canadian Cowboys’ Association has come a long way since its early days in the 1960s when it could count just 60 members scattered across the prairies. Carl Barrett was in the room on the day the association was formed. “It all started by a storekeeper who had an interest in the sport. He wasn’t even an active participant; he just wanted to see something get started,” Barrett said. Today, the semi-pro association – which maintains its national headquarters in Regina – has over 700 members who compete for audiences that number over 250,000 annually, including more than 20,000 spectators at Agribition alone. The organization manages over a million dollars in cash and prizes, with prizes at this year’s Agribition expected to top $100,000. The prizes and the size of membership aren’t the only major changes the organization has seen over the years. Barrett notes that the backgrounds of members have changed a great deal. “In the early days, we were all real cowboys; that is, most competitors had regular jobs in the cattle industry. Today, you could find anyone from a school teacher to a lawyer involved in

the sport.” That’s not to say the association has lost touch with its agricultural roots. The McDermits from Southey, Saskatchewan are a farm family whose children have become avid rodeo competitors. Their son Kyrell and daughters Shayana and Shalayne have grown up around horses and cattle and have developed a passion for competitive rodeo. Like any major sport, rodeo requires dedication and discipline. Mother Tamara McDermit says the family can travel as much as 2,000 kilometres in a weekend. “The kids have had to get used to a life of sleeping and doing their homework in the vehicle,” Tamara says. What keeps them going is the sense of community. “We travel all over North America and meet all sorts of great people from as far away as Australia. It’s our rodeo family – that’s what it’s all about.” Competitors aren’t the only ones for whom the sense of family is important. Spectators have long enjoyed the rodeo as an engaging, exciting sport suitable for all ages. This year the rodeo will feature nine events including bull riding, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing. It continues to rank among the most popular events at Agribition. “Rodeo events offer both top-of-class sportsmanship and spine-tingling entertainment for the whole family. Get your tickets early. Last year several of our nights sold out. We don’t want to see anyone go away disappointed,” Seymour said. The Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo runs November 20-24 at 7pm in the Brandt Centre. Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.ca and at the Brandt Centre Box Office.

A Peek at Where Past Agribition Winners Are Today

Agribition has built a reputation for excellence in cattle judging that can pay big dividends. Past winners of Agribition prove that winning can boost the reputation of cattle breeders.

T

he ‘best of the best’ at Agribition are the RBC Beef Supreme banners. Justin Morrison landed the RBC Beef Supreme Female banner in 2011 for a cow/calf he prepared for Soo Line Cattle Co. For him, the award was the highlight of a long journey. “There is so much time, effort and energy that you invest into raising these animals. It takes years. Every decision you make with the cattle builds up to it. Searching, feeding, clipping; it’s countless hours but it’s incredibly rewarding. For this particular champion show, preparations started six months ahead of the RBC Beef Supreme,” Morrison said. This win at Agribition has done wonders for Morrison’s reputation. “It’s amazing the people you are introduced to and how people want to talk to you after you’ve won. It’s a game changer, professionally and economically.” Morrison notes that the mother of last year’s winning cow also won at Agribition back in 2008 and ultimately sold at the World Angus Forum for $100,000. Rodger Hardy, the owner of Soo Line Cattle Co. is hoping the same for his RBC Supreme Champion Female. “A win at Agribition easily adds another $20,000 to the sale

price of a cow. When we sell her this fall, we are hoping that means anywhere from $50,000-$100,000,” Hardy says. Garner Deobald had a very similar experience in raising the 2011 RBC Beef Supreme Champion Bull. “It’s something that you only dream about. Winning that award was the pinnacle of our time in the purebred business. Agribition is recognized across Canada and around the world as the premiere event so winning there brings a lot of attention for our operation,” Deobald said. An animal’s breeding potential alone can become a major business venture. While Deobald has full ownership of the bull itself, two other partners own shares in his semen which has already been sold as far away as Australia. “If you add up both the added value to semen sales and the extra attention given to offspring, a win at Agribition can mean well over $100,000 in added value to a cattle business,” Deobald says. Don’t miss the prestigious RBC Beef Supreme Challenge Saturday, November 24 at the Chevrolet GMC Stadium. Share in the excitement of the moment when the judges slap those two special animals that will become renowned as the 2012 Canadian Western Agribition RBC Beef Supreme Champions.

at Agribition Christmas is just around the corner and Agribition is once again pleased to bring together Saskatchewan’s biggest selection of unique shopping opportunities, all under one roof!

I

f you thought Agribition’s trade show was just tractors and saddles, you are much mistaken. Of course, we have those things but we also have a whole lot more. The trade show is the fourth largest in Canada and features more than 500 exhibitors. “We’ve seen a lot of growth in products for the grain and livestock industry but our biggest growth has been in consumer products, which shows that we are attracting a different type of shopper. Of course, we are still drawing the farmers and ranchers looking for practical agribusiness needs but we are also getting more and more families doing their Christmas shopping.” says Agribition Marty Seymour. “We started off 42 years ago building this show to trade in livestock and agribusiness products but we didn’t stop there. In past years, urban visitors have told us they’ve spent the whole day at Agribition and didn’t see a cow the whole time,” says Agribition Vice President Reed Andrew.

Agribusiness Marketplace

Still the heart and soul of Agribition, the agriculture industry is a key part of our trade show offerings. The Agribusiness Marketplace is located in the Credit Union Event Plex featuring crop and livestock equipment, livestock trailers, grain machinery, GPS systems and more. Be sure to check out the latest in agriculture machinery in Arenas 4 & 5 located in The Co-operators Centre. The Agribusiness Marketplace is open Monday to Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The John Deere Profile of Champions

In 1987, Canadian Western Agribition and John Deere joined forces to create one of the Canadian beef industry’s proudest showcases, the impressive John Deere Profile of Champions.

T

his program continues to recognize and pay tribute to Canadian Western Agribition’s Grand Champion purebred bulls and females. Each year, the Profile of Champions feature the best purebred beef genetics in the world. Dawn Wilson owner and operator of Miller Wilson Angus has received several Agribition Grand Champion banners. She sees it as a major boost to their business. “Really, it is the best cattle in North America that are showcased at Agribition. Our success at Agribition is something we work into our advertising on our website, on Facebook and YouTube. In fact, just recently an American breeder called us because of a YouTube video he saw of one of our animals at Agribition,” says Wilson. The secret of success at the show is both nurture and nature, Wilson says.

“You have to start off with an exceptional product. There’s a lot of work that you have to invest in feeding, grooming and showing but you can’t just start with any animal. The ones that end up in the Profile of Champions are all pretty special animals.” To add further recognition John Deere presents the Grand Champions with a limited edition white coat that has become a symbol of prestige within the cattle industry. Wilson is proud to own multiple coats. “We don’t keep them in the closet. We have multiple family members wearing them. For one thing, we are proud to show them off and for another, we appreciate all the support John Deere has provided.” This year, John Deere is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Profile of Champions with an exclusive reception to honour white coat recipients.

“I’m really excited about what the future is in agriculture as a whole. I think more than ever it’s got to be run with a business plan and a sharp pencil.” – Doug Seland, Alberta

POWERED BY FARM CREDIT CANADA

It’s time to tell the real story Canadian agriculture is a modern, vibrant and diverse industry, filled with forward-thinking people who love what they do. But for our industry to reach its full potential this has to be better understood by the general public and, most importantly, by our industry itself. The story of Canadian agriculture is one of success, promise, challenge and determination. And the greatest storytellers are the 2.2 million Canadians who live it every day. Be proud. Champion our industry.
