It’s time to tell the real story Canadian agriculture is a modern, vibrant and diverse industry, filled with forward-thinking people who love what they do. But for our industry to reach its full potential this has to be better understood by the general public and, most importantly, by our industry itself. The story of Canadian agriculture is one of success, promise, challenge and determination. And the greatest storytellers are the 2.2 million Canadians who live it every day. Be proud. Champion our industry.

Ryan Boyd & Scott Perkin,
Ron Kostyshyn,
Welcome to the 36th show of Manitoba Ag Days. This show has always been featuring the latest in equipment, technology and information and this year will certainly be no exception. This is the place to be for an all encompassing education of what’s new and the opportunity to update yourself to the ever changing world of agriculture. With 500 plus exhibitors filling the 12 acre facility you will no doubt find something of interest. You will notice in the Show Guide a section highlighting exhibitors that are displaying New Products. Look for the New Product sign in their booths as you walk the show. Also check out Inventor’s Showcase in Barn 4 as we have 14 exhibitors proudly displaying their unique inventions. Bull Congress is once again filled to capacity and can be found in Barn 3. Another very popular part of the show has always been the seminars. Our program committee has done a fantastic job putting together a comprehensive slate of speakers and topics that won’t disappoint. Be sure to check them out in the seminar area located at the south end of the Westman Place Arena. Down on the floor level of the Westman Place Arena you will find the Farm Safety displays. We encourage you to visit this area as we all know how important safety is and we may not realize how dangerous some of our daily activities around the farm actually are. Another highlight of the show is the Feature Booth. This year we have selected the Bruce D. Campbell Farm & Food Discovery Centre. Look for this booth in the southeast corner of the Optimist Arena and also in this show guide you will find more detail about the Centre. Thank you to our many sponsors and you will find them mentioned on various pages in this guide. We look forward to seeing you at Ag Days 2013 – It’s Where the Ag Year Begins.
On behalf of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the Province, welcome to Manitoba Ag Days 2013. Ag Days continues to be one of western Canada’s largest indoor farm shows. It is a venue for all parts of the agriculture industry to come together to get new information, to share and to learn. It is also a place to preview the latest in equipment and innovation and, of course, to kick tires before the start of a new crop year. The agriculture community in Manitoba is strong and plays an ongoing role in feeding people here at home and the rest of the world. We are proud that Manitoba’s farm producers are continuously adapting their practices and adopting new technologies to ensure they adequately deal with the challenges they face. Agriculture not only remains one of the cornerstones of Manitoba’s past, it contributes to the province’s current economic prosperity. As one of the province’s top 10 industries, agriculture accounts for one in every 10 jobs, along with providing significant economic spin-offs that benefit all Manitobans. Manitoba’s agriculture community is a leader in innovation and here at Ag Days you have the opportunity to hear about how we can accelerate the growth of agriculture and create economic development opportunities to help rural communities grow. Ag Days gives you a chance to explore these and other exciting possibilities as you meet with commodity groups, suppliers and guest presenters. I look forward to seeing you there.

Seminars Workshops 2012 4-H Communications Winners Amy Unger
As North Americans, it is not difficult to see injustice, poverty, and the need for heroes in today’s world. While examining what it takes to be a hero and an instigator of change, it is found that the greatest ‘superpower’ is not based in strength or wealth but in the simple choice to put to use whatever we have to use. Amy Unger placed first in the Provincial 4-H Communications Extravaganza in 2012 with her speech entitled ‘The Hands of a Hero’. Amy is a fourth year member of the Headingley 4-H Club. Join Amy for her presentation at 2:15 on Tuesday in the MNP Theatre.

Every year, month and day brings changing market factors. US weather and grain crop conditions dominated the markets for the second half of 2012. All of the major protein markets have had to adjust to these factors, and this sets a new stage for 2013 and beyond. Although market expectations needed to be adjusted in 2012; despite the challenges, the Western Canada beef industry continues to see some advantages and opportunities through all this. Canfax will provide an overview of the key market factors, both globally, and locally, and discuss key indicators for beef producers to monitor in the upcoming year. In the MNP Theatre you will find Brian speaking at 1:30 pm on Wednesday.
Changing the Industry with the Canadian Young Leaders Program Sheldon Kyle
Sheldon will be discussing the importance of becoming more involved within the beef industry and the importance of young producers to do so. The Cattlemens Young Leaders program has allowed him to do just this. Young farmers and ranchers have a great story to tell, we understand how the public searches for information related to their food purchases and as such we need to be part of this conversation. Building our industry network is so paramount to our success; tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube all play an increasingly important role in our daily business. Check out Sheldon’s presentation at 2:15 pm on Wednesday in the MNP Theatre.

Seminars Workshops Extended Grazing Panel Economic Outlook for Duane Thompson Agricultural Markets Duane graduated from the U of S in ’87 with a Diploma in Agriculture and after traveling worked his way back into his family’s operation in the Parkland Region south of Kelliher SK. Duane and his wife now own and operate Tee Two Land and Cattle Co, an operation comprised of cows, feedlot, forages, grains, pulses and oilseeds with forages comprising half of their 7000 acres. Duane will be explaining how he extended the grazing season on his operation to make it as economical as possible given the resources at hand and having the cattle working for a living.
Don Guilford Don and Diane Guilford operate Guilford Hereford Ranch consisting of approximately 1300 acres of native rangeland and tame pasture. Their herd is made up of 225 purebred registered Hereford cows and 75 purebred registered Black Angus cows. Through rotational grazing, bale grazing and extended rest periods the Guilford’s have doubled stocking rates on their Ranch. Most recently they have experimented with extending the grazing season to early spring and are moving to a planned grazing of 9 months of the year.
Ken Vaags
Ken Vaags is a producer who specializes in grass finishing cattle. As such he feeds no grain at all, and keeps his calves on the cows until early March. This requires the feeding of good quality forages all winter. At the same time he has gone to low cost extensive wintering, so no bedding pack, no manure spreading, and the herd stays out in the pasture all winter. He uses only one skid steer loader to do everything, keeping his yardage costs to a bare minimum. To facilitate this he has gone to an innovative self-feeding system attached to silage bags for the winter months and windbreaks that he moves with each wind change. Come see Ken talk 18 about how this all works and the advantages it gives him at 3 pm in the MNP Theatre on Wednesday.
JP Gervais
World economic struggles show no signs of abating and Europe continues to face austerity and overall contraction in economic activity. The United States must address fiscal challenges and China must implement reforms to increase consumer spending. Net income for the Canadian red meat and crop sectors are linked to income growth abroad. JP will provide a world economic outlook as well as review economic drivers such as interest rates, farmland values and the Canadian dollar which have a direct impact on the bottom line of Canadian agribusinesses. Come see JP Gervais at 10 am in the FCC Theatre on Wednesday.

Ron Palmer
Conventional wisdom has it that aeration fans should be turned on continuously for a week or so after the bin is filled with freshly harvested grain; but, is this the most effective and efficient use of the fans? Based on five years of data, it’s clear that there are times during the day when the grain is dried, and times when it is wetted. Typically the drying takes place at night and the wetting takes place during the day. Ron will show the daily cycles of drying/wetting and explain the principles of why this happens. By following a recommended control strategy, the fan need only run half the time and still ensure safe cool storage of the grain. Ron will be speaking in the FCC Theatre on Wednesday at 2:15 pm.

Hemp has Arrived in Manitoba! Keith Watson
Industrial Hemp was licensed to grow 14 years ago and the industry has grown approximately 20% each year. In 2012 it was estimated there were 60 to 70,000 acres grown mostly in Western Canada. The grain processing and food products have driven the industry but now fibre processing is starting to emerge to enhance further uses of the crop and markets for the production. Keith will discuss agronomy, production and marketing of this crop as it emerges to take its place in farming rotations. He’ll be presenting at 1:30 pm Thursday in the MNP Theatre.
A record number of grain corn acres were planted in Manitoba in 2012 - close to 300,000. Expansion of grain corn production is being seen in areas what some may consider ‘non-traditional’. However, with advancements in early maturing, higher yielding genetics and strong commodity prices, grain corn production is becoming better adapted to these areas of Manitoba. Pam will focus on some of the key agronomic tips for corn production in order to maximize profitability and minimize production risk. You can hear Pam’s tips in the MNP Theatre on Thursday at 2:15 pm.
The Latest in Sunflower Opportunities Anastasia Kubinec
Sunflowers have been a long-time traditional crop in many areas of Manitoba, with a top seeded acreage of 380,000 acres. In the past few years though, acres have declined to under 100,000 acres resulting from issues with disease control and declined quality in 2008-2010.For 2013, a number of new crop protection products to protect against rust, stalk rot and head rot, as well new genetics for improved disease resistance, herbicide tolerance are available. The new tools in combination with the cultural tools already available makes sunflower in 2013 a highly profitable alternative compared to canola. With the word profitable, Anastasia will have your attention in the MNP Theatre on Thursday at 3 pm.

MANITOBA AG DAYS
Feature Booth
Manitoba Ag Days has chosen to highlight the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre as this years Feature Booth. You will find this exhibit in the SE corner of the Optimist Arena. For many of us, the idea of where our food comes from starts and ends with the local grocery store. The Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre, the first handson agricultural facility in Western Canada, helps an increasingly urbanized population explore where their food comes from and how it gets to their dinner plates. Opened in September 2011 and affiliated with the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, the FFDC is located just 15 minutes south of Winnipeg, Manitoba on Highway 75. Interactive exhibits lead visitors from the farmer’s field to the livestock barn, and from the mill to the home kitchen. Visitors can sit in the driver’s seat of a virtual tractor, check real-time weather data and use a virtual ultrasound to find piglets in a pregnant sow. A definite highlight of the Centre are the viewing windows into pig breeding, gestation, nursery and weaning rooms, where visitors can sometimes even witness the birth of tiny new piglets. The Centre features amenities including a multipurpose room, exhibits, a bus drop-off zone, a landscaped picnic area and outside exhibit plots where Manitoba crops are grown during the summer months. Visitors are
self-guided through the facility, but guided tours for schools and other groups can be arranged by appointment. In addition to being a great new place for a family outing, the 8,300-square-foot interpretive facility supports programming and hands-on activities aimed at Grade 5-8 students. The multi-purpose room can be booked for private or public presentations, meetings or lunch space. Located on the grounds of the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station, the FFDC profiles the latest research in food production and environmental stewardship, animal welfare, nutrition and food safety, modern agricultural practices, sustainable food production (especially crops and livestock), and the effects of agriculture on soil, water and air. The Centre also addresses the role of farmers as environmentalists and providers of food, the goal being to appreciate the skill and hard work that goes into putting food on everyone’s table. As the sign at the entrance of the Centre says, “If you ate today, thank a farmer”.

This past year has seen some changes to the Manitoba Ag Days organization. After coordinating thirteen shows Owen and Pat Beever retired as General Managers of the show. Jonothon and Christine Roskos have taken over the duties as General Managers for the 2013 show. Jonothon had formerly been co-chair of the Board and Ryan Boyd of Forrest, MB has taken over that position along with co-chair Scott Perkin. Another departure from the Board is Scott Day. Many of you in the SW corner of Manitoba and even beyond are quite familiar with Scott. He had been involved with Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives for twenty three and a half years starting as an Ag Rep in Killarney. Scott has had a true passion for agriculture and has been
providing input for the show for the past twenty two years. Thanks to Owen, Pat, and Scott for their contributions and work they’ve provided over the years. We would like to welcome two new individuals to the Board, Andrea Guthrie and Dave Laudin. Andrea is from Reston, MB and along with her husband operate a 2800 acre grain farm. Andrea has also worked in the crop protection industry for the past ten years and currently works with Dupont Pioneer. Dave operates a 2600 acre grain farming operation with his family in Brunkild, MB producing cereals, oilseeds, and grasses. He’s had the opportunity to travel abroad and experience agriculture in other areas and we look forward to Dave’s enthusiasm.

Information booths Can’t find an exhibitor you’re looking for? Not sure how to get to a particular part of the building? You need only find one of our helpful staff at an information booth to help you. They’re friendly and take great pride in making sure visitors get their questions answered. You’ll find info booths placed at key places throughout the show. Sometimes we also need to rearrange the floor plan and by doing so you may not be able to find one of your favorite exhibitors in the usual spot. Don’t worry, just check with one of our staff at the info booths and they’ll guide you where you need to go. Exhibitor locations are also listed under the company name in this Show Guide.

Move In When you come to the Ag Days show likely the first thing you notice is how nice everything looks and the vast amount of space that the show covers. One thing most visitors to the show never get to see is how much work goes into making the final presentation. When the equipment and booths are all in their spot it all looks so natural but it’s more like a giant jigsaw puzzle. The logistics of moving in 500 exhibitors can be a bit overwhelming but there is a detailed plan that
has each exhibitor’s allocated move in times. Since many buildings only have one entrance for equipment, the exhibitor at the back of the room must be the first one in with each successive exhibitor following until the room is full. The whole process takes on a life of it’s own and quite often exhibitors extend a helping hand to one another as they know it’s a group effort that make this show happen. As the pictures show it’s an amazing transformation from move in to opening day.

AG IN THE
Classroom
Manitoba Ag Days is a proud supporter of Ag in the Classroom which has been providing the school tour program over the past few years called the MB Ag Days Adventure. Grades 7 and 8 students along with their teachers and chaperones have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Science, Social Studies, Careers and Agriculture through interactive Agriculture activities offered each day of Manitoba Ag Days. The student’s activities are focused on the theme: Agriculture-Think Global, Act Local, giving them a perspective on global issues. As part of a team, students will discover the importance of agriculture in Manitoba by following clues to find out awesome information about agriculture from participating booths at Manitoba Ag Days in the Keystone Centre. With much of the population becoming more distanced from the farm gate it’s an excellent opportunity to enhance the importance of agriculture. Ap-
proximately 450 students attend this program on an annual basis and benefit from a hands on learning experience. Thank you to the exhibitors that contribute their time to participate in this event helping make it successful. For more information visit www.aitc.mb.ca

OUTDOOR
Displays
Many of you are likely wondering why does Manitoba Ag Days have displays outside when it’s the middle of winter. No, we haven’t gone crazy! Since we only have a limited amount of indoor space available for the show we can’t always accommodate all of the equipment an exhibitor would like to show. The outdoor space allows them to showcase their latest equipment and gives you the opportunity to look at it. After perusing the outdoor lineup move on inside to discuss the product with an exhibitor where it’s nice and warm!
