It’s been 35 years since Manitoba Ag Days began. From those modest beginnings in 1978 as a one day Weed Fair in both Brandon and Winnipeg the show has grown to become one of the major agricultural events in Canada. We’re proud of what this show has been able to accomplish over these many years and pleased to be able to present you with this 35th edition. The show is filled to capacity again with exhibitors, over 500 in total. This includes the largest number ever in the Bull Congress and a significant increase in the Inventor’s Showcase area from the 2011 show. You will notice that Bull Congress has taken over the entire area of Barn 3. You will also note we have moved Inventor’s Showcase to Barn 4 to accommodate the extra displays that entered this year. One of the most popular aspects of the show is always the seminars. Once again you will find the two seminar theatres in the south end seating area of the Westman Communications Place Arena. Our program committee has put together an outstanding array of speakers for this year’s sessions. One of the attractions to Ag Days is the latest in technology and information for the agricultural industry. Exhibitors who want to specially promote new products participate in our New Products Feature. You will find these exhibits marked with a New Products sign and also featured in our show guide. Don’t forget the Farm Safety area in your travels around the show. This has been a regular feature at Ag Days for about 20 years and is back in its usual location on the floor of the Westman Place Arena. During this past year Manitoba Ag Days has continued to improve its website so you should be able to find most information you need about the show by going to www.agdays.com . This upcoming show also marks the retirement of the show managers Owen and Pat Beever. For the past dozen years they’ve done a fantastic job of managing the show and guiding us through expansions that have doubled the number of exhibitors since they started. Also through the years they’ve encountered challenges with exhibit space due to various construction activities at the Keystone Centre but have always been able to pull together a successful show. Thank you for your dedication to Manitoba Ag Days and we wish you a very happy retirement. We would also like to say thank you to our many sponsors - you will find them mentioned on various pages in this guide. Ag Days is financed completely by exhibitor fees and sponsor contributions. We look forward to seeing you at Ag Days 2012 – It’s Where the Ag Year Begins. — Jonothon Roskos & Scott Perkin – Co-Chairmen, Manitoba Ag Days
On behalf of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the province, welcome to Manitoba Ag Days 2012. Ag Days continues to be one of western Canada’s largest indoor farm shows. It is the place to get new information and preview the latest in equipment and innovation. It‘s also where the farm year begins with more than 30,000 producers, farm families, exhibitors and extension staff coming together to share, learn and kick tires before the start of a new crop year. The 2011 growing season presented Manitoba’s agriculture community with considerable challenges including flooding, excess moisture and even drought conditions. Despite these challenges, agriculture remains one of Manitoba’s top industries, not only for its ongoing role in feeding Manitobans and the rest of the world, but also for its potential for the future. Agriculture offers solutions to health and chronic disease through the development of new functional foods; solutions to environmental issues through new farming practices; and solutions to the growing demand for green products made from agricultural bio-materials. Manitoba’s agriculture community is a leader in innovation and here at Ag Days you have the opportunity to hear about how we can accelerate the growth of agriculture and create economic development opportunities to help rural communities grow. Ag Days gives you a chance to explore these and other exciting possibilities as you meet with commodity groups, suppliers and guest presenters. I look forward to seeing you. — Honourable Stan Struthers – Minister

Celebrating 35 Years
In 1978 the group of extension, industry and research people comprising the Wild Oat Action Committee decided a change was needed from the series of meetings they were holding around Manitoba focusing on wild oat control. The result was a Weed Fair the forerunner of what is now

known as Manitoba Ag Days. It’s doubtful anyone at that time had any idea the event would grow and flourish and develop into the show it is today. That first show was a one day affair held in Brandon in a much smaller Keystone Centre. It was repeated later in the winter at the Convention Centre in Winnipeg. Total exhibitor numbers were about 60. Most attended both shows but a few went to only one or the other. Total visitor attendance for both shows combined was less than 5000. There are still perhaps a dozen of those original exhibitors who participate in the show today. The original Weed Fair was operated by a cross section of people involved in the agriculture industry in Manitoba and so it is today. The organizing group has expanded to represent a broader cross section of the industry and it is formalized into a non-profit corporation. The show still

Keystone Centre Expansion Has Been a Key for Ag Days
Periods of construction in a facility for an organization trying to run an event are always inconvenient to say the least and many times Farm Safety Feature Added a bit painful. They are however necessary and in the case of Ag Days been instrumental in the show’s success. In the mid 1990’s Linda Carter and some colleagues at Manitoba Hydro approached Ag Days with an idea for a farm safety feature. There have been three such construction phases for Ag Days. Dean Stoyanowski
If you want to hear a discussion about AgriStability you will want to be present when Dean Stoyanowski discusses the topic on Tuesday p.m. in Theatre #2 at 1:00 p.m. AgriStability is a farm risk management program which provides producers with financial assistance when net income drops due to weather or market influences. This presentation will provide points to consider when producers review program information, so the program will be effective when it is needed the most. 2011 crop production in Manitoba suffered from excess moisture with record unseeded acreage and crop insurance claims. It is therefore safe to assume that AgriStability will be a necessary component of financial assistance as well. Dean has been with MAFRI for 5 years working as a Farm Production Advisor in the Arborg GO Centre. The North Interlake area has experienced excess moisture due to record rainfall events since 2005. Farm income has suffered and programs have been a necessity for survival for many farm operations. Dean has worked through many producer files assisting with adjustments and interactions with the AgriStability administration.

Lessons Learned in a Wet Decade Terry Buss
Although the summer months of 2011 were dry in the Eastman region of Manitoba, agricultural producers in the area have dealt with excess rainfall and saturated soils for many years. The general consensus is the problem is getting worse over time. Terry Buss will explore that premise and look at past innovative responses of the agricultural industry in Eastman to the challenges of “farming in the wet”. The idea that the pace of this innovation is accelerating and becoming increasingly sophisticated will also be explored. Terry grew up in Beausejour, Manitoba and was part of his family’s farming operation until 1993. Terry has been with MAFRI since December of 2002. In 2008 Terry joined the Eastman GO Team as a Farm Production Advisor based out of the MAFRI GO Centre in Beausejour. Before joining MAFRI, Terry worked as a Pulse Crop Specialist for Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development for seven years. If farming in wet conditions worries you be at Theatre #2 for the Agriculture Now session Wednesday at 11:15 a.m.

Does Controlled Traffic Farming Have a Fit on the Prairies? Peter Gamache
Peter GamaChe, Project Leader, Controlled Traffic Farming Alberta will participate in the Technology Overview on Wednesday afternoon talking about ‘controlled traffic farming’. Controlled traffic farming (CTF) is a relatively new practice on the Canadian Prairies. A small farmer-led initiative in Alberta is evaluating the agronomic and economic viability of CTF under a variety of climate and soil conditions. Is soil compaction an issue? What about machinery? Will yields increase? What about economics? Will risk be reduced? These are some of the questions out there. Peter will share the first year results from large-scale plots. Be at Theatre #2 at 1:45 on Wednesday if you wish to hear Peter speak.
The Smart Farm – Smartphones and Social Media Can Help Your Farm Andrew Campbell
Thanks to smartphones, farmers have access to more real-time information than ever before. But how can you wade through the junk to get the knowledge you really need? In this session, Andrew Campbell will talk about how social media and smartphones can and are producing more knowledge and income on Canadian farms. On top of being a partner in Bellson Farms, Andrew Campbell is passionate about ensuring farmers know how they can access information like never before, and that consumers know what farmers are doing for them every day. Social media and smartphones are big parts of that equation, and Andrew has spoken to groups across Canada about how they are changing the way farms operate. Bellson Farms is a partnership between Andrew, his wife and parents milking Holsteins and growing corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and hay. Andrew has worked in radio, television, and Internet media and as a reporter, broadcaster, writer and marketing planner. My Experiences with GPS and Drainage John Gehrer
The idea of driving into a field and starting to improve field drains to an accuracy of within an inch, without getting out of the tractor has only been possible for a few years. This is possible with new GPS systems. This allows farmers to clean out drains on a yearly basis, and to work on many fields in a single day. It also allows farmers to share equipment as it is often not needed for long periods of time by one farmer. Transferring equipment from one tractor to another is possible and easy, depending on the type of equipment purchased. Several systems using base stations or networks are available. John Gehrer has been farming for 27 years in the Niverville area of Manitoba and using GPS since 1997. John has also worked with farmers in Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia using GPS. He will speak about his experiences on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. during the Technology Overview in Theatre #2.
The Latest in GPS – Where is it Going Next? Pamela Wilson
Pamela Wilson has taught courses in the GIS, Agriculture, and Land and Water programs at ACC for the past 2 years. Before that, she worked as a Precision Ag Technician for Mazers in Brandon and Portage La Prairie for five years. She has also developed and taught the Precision Ag workshops for the Manitoba Zero Tillage Research Association. Pamela will be speaking in Theatre #2 Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. about the latest in GPS. This will be a quick review of the available accuracy options available in western Manitoba from the free WAAS signal to sub inch RTK accuracy. The two types of RTK systems available, stand alone and cell tower technology, will be discussed as will the science behind determining the precision of a company’s accuracies stated on their marketing information.

Effectiveness of Low Rate/Low Analysis Fertilizers John Heard
Fertilizers can be effective at low application rates or as low analysis – under certain conditions. When crops are not supplied with quantities of nutrients equal to that being removed, it is called mining the soil. Some nutrients can still be “mined” from our Prairie soils without short term yield consequence. John Heard will consider crop removal amounts and fertilization strategies to meet the crops needs – and where low rate/low analysis fertilizers have a fit. He will also talk about how to compare lb for lb nutrient prices of different fertilizers. John has been Soil Fertility Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Food & Rural Initiatives in Carman, MB since 1996. He is organizer of the Crop Diagnostic School and also Chairman of the Manitoba Soil Fertility Advisory Committee. Theatre #1 Thursday at 10:00 am is where you can hear John speak.
Weed Issues for 2012 – What Did We Learn From 2011? Nasir Shaikh
The year 2011 was challenging for producers in Manitoba due to the wet spring. The result was over 3 million acres of crop land unseeded and several thousand acres of flooded pasturelands. And what grew abundantly in these fields? - Weeds. Common weeds and some strange new ones flourished and produced seed which could become a problem for the 2012 growing season. Dr. Nasir Shaikh will talk about these issues and how they might affect Manitoba growers. Dr. Nasir Shaikh joined Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives as the provincial Weed Specialist in March, 2010. He previously worked in the crop protection industry in Saskatoon and has several years of experience in research related to the development and release of new pesticides with Bayer, BASF and DuPont. Dr. Shaikh will be part of the Agronomy Update on Thursday speaking in Theatre #1 at 10:45 a.m.

The Show
Ag Days Supports 4-H 100th Anniversary In Manitoba 4-H will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2013 marking the time from the first club established at Roland, Manitoba in 1913. At this year’s show Manitoba 4-H organizers will start the celebrations with a media launch as well as a display. The display will be located as part of the Manitoba Agriculture, Food & Rural Initiatives display in the UCT Pavillion. The media launch will take place on the first day of the show. Details will be announced closer to show time.
Draw Prize A new look for the draw prize this year. We’ve given away a trip-for-four to Disney for the past couple years. A little change of pace was in order this year so we have changed to two trips for two people – and this time to Las Vegas. McPhail Travel, Carberry and CKLQ radio continue as our sponsors for this prize as they have in the past. You will find a draw ticket in this show guide so just tear it out, complete it and bring it to the show. You can drop it off at the draw drum at any of the information booths at the show. Please - handwritten entries only will be eligible – no stamps.

More Than
500 Exhibitors
Manitoba Ag Days is strictly an agricultural event. While most agricultural trade shows make some allowance for other products such as household wares, clothing or cars Ag Days chooses not to go this route. It is Ag Days policy that all displays are of an agricultural nature. This suits farm visitors as they know the displays they are going to see are pertinent to their farm business. It also appeals to exhibitors as they know the crowd visiting the show are potential customers. Exhibitors tell us frequently in evaluations they appreciate this
approach. This year’s trade show is again over 500 exhibits. That is capacity for the show with the present space available to us. There is also a significant waiting list to enter. It is not always easy to get a completely accurate number since sometimes an exhibitor will share their booth. If you are looking for an exhibitor that is not listed in the show guide check with our information people. They often have a list of exhibitors who may be in the show with someone else.
See Us In The Arena At Manitoba Ag Days “ We have been very satisfied using the Wolverine ditcher for the past two years. We put about 475 hours on the 2009 model and then traded to a 2010. We like the 2010 model even better with the improved way the dirt feeds in and the heavier duty wear parts. We believe the Wolverine will do the work of three scraper.” - Alfred Moore, Christenson Farms, Drayton, North Dakota
Perfect ditches in half the time There is simply no better way to make and maintain ditches, waterways and terraces.
Super heavy duty construction for years of trouble-free performance.

Email: av.maxim@accesscomm.ca
The Wolverine: • eliminates the operation of leveling dirt piles left behind by a scraper • works in heavy clay soils • reduces field compaction compared to using a scraper • creates smooth ditches that allow field equipment to pass through with ease (no ridges or barrel cuts) • can be used at virtually anytime throughout the growing season

Ag DAYS
Move In
Ever wonder how long it takes to move in over 500 displays into a building like the Keystone Centre. Well it takes about the same amount of time as the show itself – three days of show and three days of move-in. Actually the display company – Central Display – setting up the curtains, etc. get a start on the Friday before the show. The main move-in with equipment starts on Sunday. It’s a big job for equipment exhibitors transporting their equipment to Brandon, cleaning it up and locating it in their display space. A steam cleaner operates on site to help with clean-up. The smaller booths start moving in on Sunday as well but the majority move in on Monday. Some of the large booth displays you see around the show do take some time to set up. Exhibitors are given a move-in time period a few weeks ahead. The Keystone Centre does a good job of the converting the building in short order. Ice is removed from the Kinsmen and Optimist Arenas overnight the Saturday/Sunday prior and the cover put on the Westman Place Arena floor at the same time. The Ag Centre of Excellence Show area is converted from a horse arena a few days in advance by removing the dirt base and the boards. And move-out? It goes much faster. By the end of the day after there won’t be much evidence of the show inside the building. The Wheat Kings are usually playing hockey on Friday night in Westman Place and the Kinsmen and Optimist Arenas are well on the road to restoring the ice.

MANITOBA WEED FAIR -
A Look Back
A look back in the Ag Days files reveals a few interesting details. One such item we discovered was the original list of exhibitors who participated in the first Weed Fair in 1978. It was about 60 names long but the most interesting aspect was the number of those exhibitors who are participating in the 2012 show. There are many others who are still attending but have been absorbed into other companies through mergers and sales so the original name has disappeared. Those who are still participating in the show under more or less the same company name are as follows; Shur-Gro Farm Services / Munro Farm Supplies Manitoba Agriculture, Food & Rural Initiatives Redfern Farm Supplies Versatile Manitoba Seed Growers Assoc. Richardson (Pioneer) Royal Bank Monsanto Canada Federated Co-op Cargill Dupont Canada 115 inches

Move more material and use less fuel. It’s that simple. The new Case B Series excavators feature a high-efficiency engine that delivers up to 17% more horsepower and 20% more fuel efficiency than previous models. Plus, our tests show you’ll use 20-50% less fuel with a Case excavator than with the competition. This means you can pocket $15,000 more a year from lower fuel costs and faster cycle times. But that’s not all. These workhorses have cabs that are among the quietest in the industry with a long list of comfort features. Get better productivity from your operators and bash back from your equipment with a Case excavator.

Need help finding your way around the Keystone Centre or finding a particular exhibit. Certainly the Keystone Centre can be a confusing place with its multitude of hallways and rooms. If you are having some difficulties stop by one of our information booths. You’ll find them in several locations around the show, strategically placed to serve visitors. Most of the people working these booths have been doing the job for several years. They’re friendly and enthusiastic and if they don’t know the answer to your question they are connected by radio to the show office. Norm Brown has organized a very capable crew once again for this year’s show.

About
Manitoba Ag Days
ABOVE: the Ag Days Board at the 2011 show.
As mentioned elsewhere in this show guide Ag Days has been operating since the late 1970’s and is celebrating 35 years. Ag Days is a non-profit corporation comprised of representatives from various parts of the Ag industry including farmers, agri-business and government. The show is completely self supporting and financed by exhibitor fees and the sponsors you see listed near the beginning of this publication.

Thank You!
Hotel accommodation is always stretched to the limit for Ag Days and this year it is even more difficult with the loss of one the hotels due to a fire in September. A couple years ago Brandon Tourism became involved in a significant manner helping to secure rooms for exhibitors in particular and show visitors as well. Manitoba Ag Days wishes to recognize Lois McDonald and her staff at Brandon Tourism for their tremendous support. In particular we thank Rachelle Levesque for the major contribution she has made in this regard. It is very much appreciated.

New Inventions ReLocated to barn 4
When you are looking for Inventors’ Showcase at the 2012 show look to the north end of the building rather than the arena at the south end where it has been for a few years. We needed a bit more space this year and decided we could handle it better in Barn 4. Just head on down the Canada Room Hallway and keep going to the very end and Barn 4 will be on your right. Look for the gold draped booths around the outside of the room. The inventions are judged on opening day and the winners recognized with a plaque and prizes.

It’s time to check the markets. Anywhere, anytime.
Ag Days has always prided itself on being a showcase for new ideas and a place where the latest technology is on display. Inventors’ Showcase has been a part of Ag Days since the late 1980’s. It’s not a large area - usually in the range of 10 to 20 exhibitors – but it has always been a major attraction at the show. The exhibitor may be a large company but often as not it is an individual or a small company with a new idea. To qualify for Inventors’ Showcase the product can’t have been sold in Manitoba for more than two years.

Agri-Marketing Centre
Manitoba Ag Days has been pleased with the growth of the Agri-Marketing Centre during the past number of years. This centre is a semi private venue funded by private industry and government sponsors. It provides a venue for exhibitors and visiting industry professionals to meet to learn about export planning, market profiles, international buyers/visitors and government supported programs. It also serves as an internet café for exhibitors as well as a message centre. It can be found in Salon A. The operation of the Agri Marketing Centre is handled by Bill Teerhuis from Manitoba Trade and Investment. Bill has been doing this at the show for about 20 years and has worked to develop the Agri Marketing Centre and expand the services it provides to exhibitors at the show. In his role with Manitoba Trade and Investment Bill travels to trade shows in other countries and has promoted Ag Days at these events. Bill has developed materi-
als about the show to distribute to prospective buyers. Presently with Ag Days support Bill is developing some new material for this purpose. Ag Days attracts delegations and other visitors from outside Canada every year and the Agri Marketing Centre plays an important role hosting these visitors and serving as a point of contact while they are at the show. In the past few years we’ve had delegations from the USA, Europe and other areas of the world. Bill and his team make sure these visitors get to meet with the exhibitors that are most pertinent to their visit. Among the services to exhibitors at the show provided by the Agri Marketing Centre are early morning seminars related to developing their business and marketing. These seminars have grown in prominence over the past few years with the room filled to near capacity at last year’s show.

Seminar Rooms Remain In Arena Location
Board Room
A couple years ago we developed a seminar area in the seating in the main arena. For the 2011 show we took that one step further and placed both seminar rooms in that area. The change worked quite well and will be continued for this 2012 show with a few upgrades to improve sound & lighting. The theatres are side by side, each comprising of two sections of arena seating. This provides adequate room for attendance even for the most popular speakers.
If you are looking for the seminar rooms go to the upper level of the Keystone Centre (top of the ramp) and take one of the doors into the Westman Place Arena. Follow the concourse past the displays to the south end. Look for the signage designating Theatres 1 & 2. The program committee has put together an excellent array of speakers and you can refer to the seminar schedule and descriptions in this guide for more detail.

New Products
The New Products Feature was an idea we started a few years ago. There are many new products every year and they don’t really fit into new inventions but we wanted an opportunity to be able to feature them if the exhibitor so chose. Exhibitors who enter their new product into this feature are identified in a special listing in this guide. You will also see a “New Products” sign placed on their display. These products are also judged and there is a plaque awarded to the best new product. They are not all in one location as the new inventions so you need to look at the list and look for the signage.
