FOREWORD
For pride of place, nothing can surpass the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Perched on the slope of East Gros Ventre Butte in Jackson Hole, surrounded by mountainous beauty and constantly visited by wild animals, the Museum harks to memories of volcanic turmoil and Scottish castles and is quite literally one of the world’s most breathtaking vistas. Within the Museum, the art brings wildlife from the world to a still point so that visitors can connect with their own memories of animals. The place arouses constant action by artists. Scarcely a day goes by that someone is not on-site sketching what they see. Visitors reciprocate by following along and relentlessly photographing what they see in turn. Once a year at this special gathering, Western Visions®, artists bring new artworks and join fascinated collectors in celebration of their mutual passion for the well-limned image and the finely sculpted expression. The confluence of all this activity—animals, artists, visitors, patrons—creates a many different language conversation that lives at the center of what the Museum does and is all about: inspiring an appreciation for and knowledge of humanity’s relationship with nature. For the first time this year, we celebrate the Wild 100 artists, and we congratulate those creative workers for their accomplishments. We also look forward to future years of celebration and to the continued engagement between artists, collectors, visitors, and all the people who recognize the special nature of this place and the art within it. James C. McNutt, Ph.D. President & CEO

He left after a brief period, preferring to study directly from nature. He worked for a forestry commission and became the unofficial artist in residence for his employers. In the 1980’s, he discovered a gift and passion for sculpture. To create his unique style, Dashwood eliminates superfluous details to attain refined forms with smooth, tactile surfaces, which are enhanced by the application of colored patinas. His work is held in high regard among collectors of both wildlife art and contemporary art. He has exhibited internationally for over 30 years.

She uses metallic paints to give her pieces an unpredictable radiance and layers of resin to create three-dimensionality. In so doing, she establishes the structures that will allow her to paint freely. enelope Gottlieb’s recent paintings appropriate a methodology common to both Surrealism and the Baroque, namely the linking together of heterogeneous, diverse orders of things. Painting directly over pre-existing Audubon prints, Gottlieb literally envelops the birds in a tightly woven braid of plant leaves, tendrils, and tentacles, so that what would normally be part of the birds’ natural habitat has suddenly turned on them as a form of domestic colonization. my Poor’s wildlife paintings are a departure from the traditional style of the genre and take the viewer to a more stylized contemporary realm. While she began as a self-taught artist, she expanded her experience with an art degree from Eastern Oregon University. For many years, she painted in watercolor exclusively, but now oil is her medium of choice. As a result of her watercolor experience, she has developed a very personal “oil wash” technique that has resulted in a strong individual style. Today, her paintings can be found exclusively in a select number of fine galleries and juried art and museum shows throughout the country. Exhibitions include Western Visions®, Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival, Southwestern Wildlife Exposition, and Natureworks Art Show.
