Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments and Markers Monuments RECOMMENDATIONS: 1) Broaden the definition of public art that's fitting to the 21st century, include sound, flora, digital and interactive installations as part of the definition. And educate the public to this broaden definition which is more democratic. 2) Rotation of some permanent sculptural works to museum grounds, private plazas and botanical gardens to help tell a broader narrative and the allow space for new public art. 2) More inter-agency cooperation to approve more permanent public art which includes parks, bridges, viaducts, tunnels and abandoned structures along our waterways like pilings, old piers and buildings -Citizens are fighting their own government to realize public benefits -Arches of Harlem 3) Increase resources for conservation of permanent public art, which includes digital archiving, online exhibitions and even virtual reality with the help of public agencies and the private technology community. An Example would be Kara Walker's A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby. 4) 2% Percent for Public Art 5) Offer corporate incentives to fund public art like FEARLESS GIRL. 6) Strongly encourage educational institutions to display their portions of their public art collections in under-privilege neighborhoods throughout the City. (This would provide great inspiration for learning). 7) Real development of a Green Corp that would train New Yorkers in landscape design, landscape architecture, tree care and maintenance. From the bottom up inspire avenues that lead to job creation. 8) Easing permitting and insurance requirements to make the public art process more affordable and sustainable.
