PORT OF TILLAMOOK BAY MARKET DISTRICT SPRING 2018 Final Project Professor: Mark Donofrio Despite being the most agriculturally productive area in Oregon, Tillamook still experiences moderately high levels of food insecurity. Tillamook’s farmland is primarily devoted to dairy related industry. This has resulted in increased farmland costs which has deterred local fruit and vegetable production. The Port of Tillamook Bay has made it clear in their future land use plan that they want to allow for agriculture related industry on the site. We saw this as an opportunity to not only bring economic activity to the Port, but to also provide facilities for local fruit, vegetable, and fish production with an easily accessible distribution center. This manifested itself into a farmers market district where locals and tourists alike can buy locally-grown produce and artesian products, taste local cuisine, and learn about sustainable agricultural practices i an on-site Vertical Farm.

This project was a collaborative effort with our community client, Lane County of Oregon, and our team of consultants, which included architects who specialize in courtroom design, building codes, energy analysis, ventilation and daylight strategies, and a professor of civil engineering who specializes in mass timber structural systems. Mass timber is a renewable, locally sourced material, that sequesters carbon, minimizes construction material waste and reduces the need for high carbon impact concrete and steel in the building. One cubic meter of wood sequesters between 500-700 kg of CO2. The materials used in the courthouse would sequester approximately 10,847 metric tons of CO2.

This section of my portfolio is to showcase my familiarity with complex detail drawings of various types. Recently I took a class called “Passive House Details where we designed a high performance home in accordance with the building performance standards set by the Passive House Institute in the United States (PHUIS.) The home utilizes double stud framing, double layered insulation, triple pane glass, insulated-slab foundation, and many other techniques to allow the building to perform at an extremely high performance standard. The second half of this section shows the detail drawings I made for my Enclosures class. During this professional detail drawing class we were challenged to create a doublelayered glass facade and create a range of drawings to showcase our design strategies.

HAND MEDIA & CRAFT WORKS : MIXED MEDIA, MODEL MAKING & WOODCRAFT

A showcase of my level of proficiency & use of many types of mixed media, including hand drawn renders using copic multi-liners and brush-tip markers. I am also very fond of making physical models for architectural projects. In contemporary architecture school, physical models seem to be viewed as archaic and are often required but never focused on. I believe that there is something to learn from a hands-on approach when it comes to design and most things in life. I am extremely comfortable with hand tools, electric tools and the wood shop and I love being able to physically manifest my designs and seeing them to fruition - whether it’s a Windsor chair or a 1/16 scale model of a building.
