Being a Pearl: A Treasure of the Hampton Roads Community a letter from ben unkle, president and ceo

r

It has been 30 years since we welcomed our first residents. Pearls are appropriate gifts on such anniversaries. Like many worthwhile endeavors, this pearl was born of courage and hard work. Many people in Hampton Roads stepped up and took risks to bring this community into existence. The sponsoring churches and committees raised the charitable seed money to buy the land. Local banks then lent large sums of money to build the project, not knowing for certain that it would fill up or be a success. But, they knew it was good for Hampton Roads. The dream was to become the premier provider of retirement services in Hampton Roads and be recognized in the community as a major ministry to older adults. Our founders certainly achieved that dream, and now we seek to honor them by carrying those traditions forward.

our mission

d

“Promoting the well-being of every one of our residents.”

“We will make Westminster-Canterbury an integral and visible ministry of the Christian Church within the internal and external community for mutual benefit and support.”

In the earliest stages of planning, even before a location had been selected, our founders decided they wanted to help individuals who would require financial assistance to live at WestminsterCanterbury, either by defraying the entrance fee, the monthly fees, or both. We began to raise money for our Fellowship Fund before building funds were secured. Over its life, our Fellowship Fund has touched hundreds of individuals and their families by providing more than $8.5 million in charity assistance to people who otherwise would have been financially excluded from the dream. Our charitable and social impact upon Hampton Roads does not begin and end only with our fellowship program. We awarded more than $11,000 in emergency assistance grants in 2011 to staff facing temporary financial difficulty. We also awarded $52,200 in scholarship grants to staff and their families to better their lives and skills through continuing education. Our residents and staff also serve in the broader Hampton Roads community. Last year, residents and staff volunteered more than 7,000 hours of service. Some provided arts and crafts programs to seniors, others helped repair homes for seniors and disadvantaged neighbors, and some read to children attending public schools, while others fed the homeless and comforted families through medical emergencies. Private gifts from our residents and staff, combined with our Fellowship Assistance contributed $981,202 in support of community needs last year. In 2011, our sense of social responsibility is as strong and vital as our financial performance. Our core business is strong. Sales growth and improved operating efficiencies produced a record year. We reinvested $3.1 million in our building and equipment, paid down $1.9 million in long term debt, and still transferred $2.8 million to our investments. We can offer residents of Hampton Roads the secure retirement they deserve. We are proud of our history and excited about the promise of our future. We know we are accountable to the community, our residents, and our Creator. Our team strives to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May it always be so. Sincerely,

Ben Unkle, President & CEO

Residents and Staff Volunteers

Residents and Staff Volunteers

what impact are they making in the community?

continued

r

We have listed the volunteer hours and the dollars provided by our residents and staff as they serve in our local community. But are we making a difference? One way to evaluate your Community Benefits Program is to ask the recipients. Angel Flight – Their mission and purpose is “to ensure that no needy patient is denied access to distant specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for lack of means of air transportation.” Our residents make quality assurance follow-up calls on their behalf and report the results to Angel Flight.

Reading is Fundamental, a Norfolk Public Schools Program – For many years the Rotary Club of Norfolk has adopted 17 elementary schools in Norfolk. Their members and friends read to the younger children participating in the school’s Reading is Fundamental Program. Four years ago, Westminster-Canterbury began participating at Ingleside Elementary School. Readers have been recruited from a group of 20 residents who travel to Ingleside three times per year to read and converse with students. Mrs. Charlotte Brunswick, the Reading Specialist at Ingleside says: “We are truly appreciative of your wonderful residents at Westminster-Canterbury! When the younger students see me in the hall, they ask ‘when are our RIF people coming again?” Yes we have claimed all of you; you are a part of Ingleside Elementary.”

Suzanne Rhodes, Director of Public Affairs for Angel Flight says “Roy Brun and his dedicated team of volunteers have served Angel Flight since 1997 providing invaluable service to our staff and patients. By following up with phone calls to our patients who have traveled with Angel Flight, the volunteers gather vital information that helps us improve our service and build on the good we do in the community. We are grateful for their community service.” Seatack Senior Center – Located in the Seatack Recreation Center, Forever Young, the senior’s program meets during the week. Several years ago, we asked Jenny Duncan, the Seniors Coordinator what we might do to enhance their program. An arts and crafts program was her reply and we have just that kind of talent in our resident community. For the past five years, WestminsterCanterbury residents, currently led by Mrs. Ottilie Henkel, have taken their arts and crafts programs to these Forever Young Seatack Seniors. Jenny says: “Our seniors truly enjoy the Westminster-Canterbury residents when they visit. It gives them another view of the world outside.”

2

ForKids – ForKids is a local not-for-profit which is dedicated to helping homeless families in Hampton Roads. ForKids currently helps hundreds of children and parents in Norfolk and Suffolk create self-sufficient lives. It gives them safe places to live, counseling, case management, job-search assistance and tutoring. The hallmark of their tutoring programs is Hot Meals and Homework. About eight years ago, WestminsterCanterbury joined local restaurants and other food providers by furnishing 30 evening meals, once per month from our own kitchen, for these homeless families. After a hot meal, the children are ready to study and learn. “The Hot Meals and Homework program exists to assist students become better learners and individuals. We couldn’t provide the level of support for the students and entire families without our core. At the center of our program is dedicated and flexible community partners like Westminster-Canterbury. Without a doubt, I can count on Westminster-Canterbury to provide hot meals for our students and families each month!” Cedrick Garrett, Children’s Education Program Manager, ForKids.

3

Residents and Staff Volunteers continued Judeo-Christian Outreach Center – JCOC provides emergency housing for families as well as single men and women in crisis. They serve the community by providing a safe place to stay, a hot, wholesome meal, help those battling drug or alcohol addiction as well as education to help their clients move forward with their lives. Our residents and staff members partner with JCOC by providing a hot meal for about 100 of their clients, four times per year as a part of their evening meal program. “We can’t thank you and Westminster-Canterbury enough for your loyal service and support here at the JCOC to our local community on a quarterly (and at times more) basis. Without help from groups like yours, we couldn’t continue to serve our community and neighbors in need 365 days a year. Many thanks!” Molly Brown, Executive Director, Judeo-Christian Outreach Center.

the fellowship program

d

A promise of our mission from the very early planning of Westminster-Canterbury was to ensure the availability of residence to all qualified individuals, regardless of their financial status. This promise is at the core of our Community Benefits Program; providing retirement for older adults in the community, regardless of their need. Since Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay opened its doors on March 29, 1982, the Foundation’s Fellowship Fund has provided $8,568,000 to the Westminster-Canterbury Corporation to support this ministry. The Fellowship support continues as currently 9% of our residents enjoy the blessing of community living here at Westminster-Canterbury and the ministry continues to grow. In 2011 alone, we provided $873,000 in Fellowship Assistance and have budgeted almost $800,000 for 2012. This program is a critical factor in our ability to “Promote the well-being of every one of our Residents.” What does the Fellowship Program mean to our community? One resident writes: “I’m still in awe that God made it possible through the Foundation for me to live here.”
