A ZULU BALLET
A decade after its premiere, Sisters Grimm is relaunching INALA, a Zulu Ballet, in London following a five-year, COVID induced, hiatus. This Grammy-nominated production, conceived in 2009, was created in collaboration with the renowned acapella choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who rose to international stardom with Paul Simon’s Graceland album at a pivotal moment that helped amplify the voice for breaking the apartheid regime.
In a similar vein, INALA was born with a mission to increase diversity on stage and in the audience. It worked. The show has toured nationally and internationally to standing ovations, at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall during Black History Month on World Ballet Day, Hampton Court Palace and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The South African dance musical has reached live audiences of over 120,000, has a 200 million digital reach and social impact programme beneficiaries of more than 12,500.
The remarkable success and youth outreach initiatives of INALA led Sisters Grimm’s founders, former Royal Ballet dancer Pietra Mello-Pittman and award-winning composer and painter Ella Spira, to receive MBE awards from King Charles in 2021.
Their latest youth program, ‘UK Art In Nature,’ celebrated the 30th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s inauguration under the theme ‘Hope—Unthinkable change can happen,’ featuring his grandson Ndaba Mandela. This initiative proved highly impactful, with 80% of participating youth learning about apartheid for the first time.
The desire to connect with global cultures remains as pertinent today as ever. The vibrant choral harmonies of the INALA score immerse audiences in the rich traditions of isicathamiya song and dance.
As a B Corp-certified organisation, Sisters Grimm is dedicated to promoting equality, cultural collaboration, and social mobility.

New housing office for residents in Soho
In September, we opened a new housing service centre, on Broadwick Street in Soho.
The centre is a new hub for the local community and will provide a welcoming space for residents to speak face-to-face with our housing staff. This will allow residents to speak with housing officers about anything from repairs to help with bills to support needs to accessing cost of living support.
This is our fourth new housing service centre in the past 18 months, following offices in Queen’s Park, Pimlico and Bayswater, and adds to the seven existing housing offices located across the city.
These new housing centres are an important step in improving our housing services and bringing them closer to our residents.
Calling all Maida Hill residents
Maida Hill Market is now open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm. Come and check out the market, support local vendors, and enjoy the lively atmosphere –there’s something for everyone.
“We’ve got loads of new stalls here and new traders,” said Councillor Cara Sanquest who was at the launch of the market. “You can get a coffee, grab some lunch – there’s Filipino food, Caribbean food and more –so make sure you come down and support your local businesses and enjoy the new revamped market.” You can find that market at the junction of Harrow Road and Fernhead Road.

FROM THE Leader
Across Westminster, we’re working hard to improve our services and offers for you.
A fourth housing service centre opened on Broadwick Street in Soho (see left) where you can get advice, give feedback and engage with support services. Our housing teams are now more accessible to residents than ever.
Maida Hill Market reopened earlier in the month with lots of local vendors. There are also exciting times at Pimlico Library, where the the Library of Things has launched, a new initiative at which household items can be rented on a short-term basis.
A phenomenal 100 weddings took place in one day at Old Marylebone Town Hall to celebrate the venue’s 100th anniversary. Our incredible registrars, ushers and officers worked around the clock to deliver a very special day for all our couples.
And as we head into the colder months, the Winter in the City campaign has kicked off, supporting residents with the cost of living. The welcomed extension of the Household Support Fund until March 2025 has ensured additional support for vulnerable residents and families. If you are struggling this winter, please check what support you might be eligible for.
Many of you will have read in this very magazine over the past two years about our planned transformation of Oxford Street.
Our plans to redesign and improve the street and surrounding area had the support of the local community and retailers. They were intended to deliver significant economic growth while also securing a successful future for neighbourhoods in the West End.
The Mayor of London’s intention to take control of
Oxford Street in order to pedestrianise it were first shared with the council leadership only a few days before the public announcement. I have written to the Deputy Prime Minister and the Mayor, requesting further details about what it is they are proposing, including how long it could take to be delivered and how the concerns of local residents and users of the street will be addressed.
It goes without saying that we believe the voice and rights of residents must be respected in any new proposals, particularly given the real practical challenges pedestrianisation will have for the wider area.
My colleagues and I will work hard to ensure that the concerns of local residents and other users of Oxford Street are heard by the Mayor and the government to achieve the best possible outcome for Oxford Street’s future and for local communities.
Cllr Adam Hug
Winter in the City returns to Westminster! As the weather gets colder we have plenty of support available for you as well as activities to take part in, ways to help minimise your bills and get the most for your money this winter.

I found a way
Living in our bustling borough of Westminster offers countless opportunities and experiences, but it can also present unique challenges that may impact your mental wellbeing. From financial worries and social isolation to struggling with your identity, many factors can affect our mental health. That’s why we are excited to announce the launch of our new mental health campaign, ‘I Found a Way to Wellbeing’, designed to encourage you to speak up, seek support, and not suffer in silence.
to wellbeing
‘I think having a wellbeing hub with information on how to get support for mental health is a wonderful idea. I think men like to find information for themselves, especially older men’
Tim, Queen’s Park resident
Introducing the Wellbeing Hub
At the heart of our campaign is the new Wellbeing Hub, an online directory designed to help you find the support you need, when you need it. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, loneliness, or just feeling overwhelmed, the Wellbeing Hub is an online resource featuring local and national services ready to assist.
The hub includes a userfriendly quiz to guide you towards tailored support based on your specific needs. This ensures you can access the right help, whether you’re facing challenges with becoming a new parent, substance use, or simply need someone to talk to.
You can also check out videos filmed with local services explaining how you can access their service and experiences of residents using those services.
Free emotional wellbeing training
As part of the ‘Way to Wellbeing’ campaign, we are also offering free mental health and emotional wellbeing training for anyone who lives, works or studies in Westminster or Kensington and Chelsea. This training is designed to help you recognise the signs of declining wellbeing in yourself and others, listen effectively and guide someone towards the right support.
Maintaining good mental wellbeing is not just a personal responsibility – it’s a community effort. By understanding how to support others, we can all play a part in building a healthier, more resilient community.
Speak up and reach out
The key message of the ‘Way to Wellbeing’ campaign is simple: no one should suffer in silence. If you or someone you know is feeling low, don’t hesitate to speak up. Visit our Wellbeing Hub to find the support that suits your needs and take up our free mental health training to better understand how to support others.
For more information on the campaign, to access the Wellbeing Hub, or to sign up for free mental health training, visit our website today. Let’s make Westminster a place where everyone feels supported and no one feels alone.
www.westminster.gov.uk/ wellbeing-hub
I’m thrilled we have launched our Way to Wellbeing campaign! Now more than ever, it’s crucial to talk openly about mental health and break the stigma. Sharing our stories empowers us and creates safe spaces for others to open up.
In Westminster, we can make a real impact by hosting events, workshops, and support groups to encourage mental health discussions. Even small actions, like checking in on a friend or sharing your own experience, can lead to positive change.
Together, we can create a community that prioritises mental wellbeing and supports one another.
Cllr Iman Less, Deputy Cabinet Member, Public and Mental Health
The hub explores free or low-cost mental health and emotional wellbeing support in Westminster and some UK wide services and apps. Local support is offered to everyone living, working, or studying in Westminster. Whether for you or for someone else, our support services cover a wide range of issues and concerns.

A Century of Iconic Weddings
Celebrating 100
The Old Marylebone Town Hall, a historic wedding venue in Westminster, has reached a remarkable milestone: its 100th anniversary. Known for hosting weddings of celebrities like Ringo Starr, Sir Paul McCartney, and Liam Gallagher, the venue marked this special occasion with an unforgettable event. On 1 October, 100 couples gathered to marry, renew their vows, or enter civil partnerships at this iconic location.
A Special Celebration: 100 Weddings for £100
To honor its centenary, the Old Marylebone Town Hall offered couples the opportunity to participate in the day’s events for just £100, an incredible bargain compared to regular fees. From 8am to 10.30pm, the venue’s seven ceremony rooms were bustling with couples, accompanied by up to eight guests, and even pets. Rainy weather didn’t diminish the excitement as newlyweds were showered with cheers and confetti, capturing the magic of the day.
A Venue
Full of Meaning
For many, the town hall holds personal significance, with some couples having family ties to the venue, while others simply admire its storied history. One bride shared that she used to walk past the town hall weekly, dreaming of her wedding day there. The centennial event brought together diverse couples, each with their own unique connection to the historic building.
Melanie [Mrs Dsane] was born and raised in Westminster. Her grandparents who were part of the Windrush generation settled in the area. Mel’s mum was married at Marylebone Register Office and she has vivid memories from childhood of the lions and standing on the steps throwing confetti. It was fitting for us to get married here and for us recreate this special moment. We feel very blessed to have reconnected.
Mr & Mrs Dsane
years of love
Looking to the Future
The celebration wasn’t just about reflecting on the past, but also looking forward to the future. As the venue enters its second century, it remains a symbol of love and unity, continuing to attract couples from all over the world.
A Timeless Destination for Love
Having hosted over 125,000 ceremonies since its doors opened in 1924, Old Marylebone Town Hall is one of the UK’s busiest wedding venues. After a four-year refurbishment completed in 2018, it continues to hold approximately 2,500 ceremonies each year, proving that its charm and significance endure. With this centenary event, Old Marylebone Town Hall reaffirms its place as one of London’s most iconic settings for couples to celebrate their most important day.
Looking for a future wedding venue?
We live in the area and met in the gym in Oxford Street. Cliche! I approached Chris in the changing room and said he was nice and we swapped numbers. We have been together for 18 years and Chris proposed about five years ago but we just have not got round to it. We have been to a previous wedding at the venue and loved its grandeur and historic importance given that it’s housed some incredible weddings in the past. The day itself is a milestone of course, and to share the experience with many other couples just sounded like too good an opportunity.
Ryan and Christopher
The “A Day to Remember” website helps couples plan their perfect Westminster wedding, especially at the iconic Old Marylebone Town Hall, by offering venue options, planning guides, and supplier recommendations. With easy booking and a variety of settings to choose from, it simplifies creating a memorable celebration.

Reuse your wrapping paper and cards – cut them up into festive gift tags for next year!

It doesn’t quite feel like Christmas until the spruce in Trafalgar Square has its lights on and the tree is shining bright! The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Robert Rigby will be joined by the Mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe, on 5 December for the Trafalgar Tree Christmas Lights ceremony.
The tree will be in Trafalgar Square until just before Twelfth Night when it will be taken down for recycling. Don’t forget you can follow the tree for sassy reels and exciting facts about the longrunning tradition.

Spending time in green spaces is essential for our mental and physical wellbeing. It helps us to get active, reconnect with nature, and escape life’s daily stresses. That’s why we’ve created this guide to some of our favourite green spaces in Westminster – perfect for unwinding, discovering new plants, and spotting hidden wildlife. From beehives in unexpected places to one of London’s oldest trees, you may be in for a few surprises.
St
John’s the Evangelist,
Kensal Green
The garden of St John’s Church has been transformed into a vibrant community green space through the Greening Westminster campaign. An old tarmac yard is now a lush garden full of wildflowers, and what were once parking spaces is now a green oasis filled with pollinator-friendly plants. Why not take a seat on one of the benches and unwind in this city oasis? There is also a community green space celebrating the Windrush Generation – can you spot the commemorative sundial?
Regent’s Canal
Stretch your legs with a stroll along Regent’s Canal towpath. Regent’s Canal flows for nine miles through central London, and a particularly rich area for wildlife and biodiversity can be found on the stretch between the London Central Mosque and London
Zoo. Keep your eyes peeled for waterfowl, birds, and insects – if you’re lucky you might even hear the roar of the lions from the Zoo.
Church Street Green Spine
Explore the Green Spine, a welcoming green space and pedestrian-friendly route through the heart of Church Street. Get active with the children’s play area, outdoor gym and table tennis, or soak up nature with the lush greenery, trees, and biodiverse plants. A perfect break from the bustling market, you can relax in leafy surroundings and experience the greener side of Church Street. Just turn off Church Street and walk down Salisbury Street towards Broadley Gardens and Lisson Gardens.
The Marylebone Elm
Ever noticed the magnificent elm tree on Marylebone High Street? It stands at over 100 feet tall and is estimated to be more than 150 years old, making it one of London’s oldest trees. This remarkable tree has survived both the Blitz and the Dutch Elm Disease that wiped out over 25 million UK trees in the 1960s. It still stands tall as a local landmark, and a testament to the resilience of nature.
Turn onto Marylebone High Street from Marylebone Road, walk past the Garden of Rest and you will see the Marylebone Elm, just set back from the pavement.
The Strand Aldwych
What used to be one of London’s most polluted streets has been transformed into a car-free green and tranquil space, larger than a football pitch. Check out the biodiverse plants and trees, specially chosen to provide colour all year round. Enjoy a moment of peace amongst the bustle of city life, with cleaner air and plenty of shady spots to sit down.
Beehives at Lillington & Longmoore and Churchill Estate
Bees are essential for biodiversity, helping to pollinate the plants that keep ecosystems buzzing and our food growing. There are estimated to be over 250,000 beehives in the UK, and you might be surprised to
find them in unexpected places, such as Westminster’s Lillington & Longmoore and Churchill Gardens Estates in Pimlico. The beehives are easily accessible, if you want to pop down and see some of our hardest working sixlegged residents in action.
To find the beehives in Lillington and Longmoore Gardens, turn off Moreton street into the garden area behind St James the Less Church. For the Churchill Gardens beehives head to the peaceful green space tucked away behind Nash house, just off Lupus street.
As well as being in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world, 32% of Westminster is made up of green space
Across the city there 80 public parks and gardens, and 28 of these have Green Flag status.
Westminster City Council owns and looks after over 300 different species of trees
There are 33 Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation across the city.
If we divide all the green space in the city, there are 22 sq metres of green space per resident
Find out how we’re protecting and improving Westminster’s biodiversity, and how you can get involved: www.westminster.gov.uk/ greening-and-biodiversity-strategy climateemergency@westminster. gov.uk
Don’t forget to layer up and stay warm while exploring nature’s beauty.
The Thames River
Did you know the River Thames is home to 125 different species of fish, over a dozen species of bird and many mammals (including the occasional seal). This is a far cry from the 1950s, when the river was so polluted it was declared ‘biologically dead’. Thankfully since then passionate conservators, as well as countless improvements mean the ancient waterway is once again alive and home to a whole ecosystem of biodiversity flowing through the heart of London. It shows what can be done when we all work together to protect nature and biodiversity.

on property licensing in Westminster
We are working hard to create a fairer, safer, and greener borough, and we need your input to help shape our future.
We are proposing a new property licensing scheme to better manage private rented homes and tackle issues such as antisocial behaviour and poor housing conditions. Selective licensing will allow us to take a proactive approach, ensuring private rental properties are safe, well-managed, and meet legal standards. This means safer homes for everyone, especially for those in vulnerable situations. The licensing scheme will also support our efforts to reduce antisocial behaviour, which is sometimes linked to privately rented
properties. In addition to promoting safety, we are also committed to fighting climate change.
We believe in being transparent and listening to the voices of our community. That’s why it’s so important that we hear from as many residents as possible on these proposals. Whether you are a resident, tenant, landlord, managing or letting agent, organisation, student or business.
By taking part in this important survey, you will also be in with a chance to win a £50 Love2Shop voucher!
