Westminster College 2009-2010 Honor Roll of Donors
A Message from the President First of all,
I want to say “Thank You!” for your financial support of Westminster in fiscal year 2009-2010. I know I speak for all the students, faculty and staff when I say that your generosity was critical to the success we experienced last year. Second of all, I want to communicate why your support is so critical. Times like these are a real challenge to colleges and universities. Institutional resources decline as endowments are hit by the markets, state appropriations are cut, and students and their families struggle to pay their bills. At the same time, more students want to enter higher education. Many can’t find work and look to further their education, and institutions struggle to keep up with demand and maintain quality.
Westminster College is no exception. We have now had ten years of record enrollments and two years of freshman waiting lists. Demand for a Westminster education is truly up. However, we hear every day from students and parents about their struggle to afford a quality college education. That is why this donor roll is so encouraging to me. Flip through it and you will see the remarkable number of people who have helped close the resource gap. While I have watched my colleagues at other institutions increase class sizes, leave faculty positions vacant, and dramatically increase the tuition they charge, I have counted myself lucky to be at Westminster. Thanks to your generous support, we are growing, adding dynamic new programs, maintaining class sizes and improving student quality.
Thanks to your generous support, we are growing, adding dynamic new programs, maintaining class sizes and improving student quality.
We are one of the few colleges in the country that has been able to do this thanks in large measure to your support. Your dedication to the College you love is inspiring to me and the students, faculty and staff. Thank you! Sincerely,
George B. Forsythe, Ph.D. President

Meet your Institutional Advancement Team What a year!
While the economy sputtered, the markets fluctuated, and unemployment hovered around 10%, we asked our alumni and friends for more support than ever before. Our students have more needs than ever and we asked you to step up. As you can see in the following pages, you and countless others stepped up to the plate and were inspiring in your generosity! On behalf of the students, faculty and staff, thank you for your investment in our mission to develop leaders of success, significance and service.
I hope you know what a significant difference your gift has made.
During fiscal year 2010 (July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010) you gave $590,477 to the Westminster Fund, $261,895 to the special Sloss Hall initiative, and $2.5 million to support specific programs and endowments. The Westminster Fund had a 9% increase during a down economy when most college annual funds declined! I hope you know what a significant difference your gift has made. Along with an outstanding staff, it is my job to link your desire to help with the students and programs that need the support. Each dollar you give has a direct and measurable impact that we’ll continue to demonstrate. It is an honor to serve Westminster with you. Thank you again for all you do! Sincerely,
John Comerford, Ph.D. Vice President for Institutional Advancement

A Working Investment 2009-10 was a great year! Here are just a few of the accomplishments and awards of our students, faculty and staff.
In October 2009, nearly 200 students, faculty and staff participated in “Into-the-Streets” which is a campus wide volunteer project that provides volunteer and leadership service throughout the local community. Westminster College was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Westminster has been cited every year since the honor roll was established in 2006.
Students Fon Komkai ’10 submitted a proposal with Angela Gerling and Bob Hansen that received the Clay Initiative Leadership grant from Omicron Delta Kappa. This is the first time the Westminster chapter has won this national grant, which will result in a new class mid-semester. Fon will be leading a follow up development project for Nepali Children as a result of her mid-semester class with Angela Gerling and Bob Hansen. Sean Peterson ‘12 was elected President of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2010-11 school year. Westminster students have been awarded two $10,000 international grants by the Projects for Peace program to improve literacy in Ethiopia and to bring electricity to a small village in Pakistan. The first Westminster winning project, “Children’s Library” was submitted by Derick Dailey ‘11, Behailu Bekera ‘10, and Eyob Demeke ‘10. The second Westminster winning project, “Solar Panels” was submitted by Hassaan Sipra ‘10.

Nineteen Westminster College students gained an insider look at some of Wall Street’s most storied financial institutions when they traveled to New York City. As members of the Blue Blazer Investment Committee, the group spent five days exploring the business and financial world of New York as well as enjoying the cultural and tourism attractions of the city.
Faculty Professor Wayne Zade, Chair of the Westminster College Division of Humanities and Professor of English, has been selected by the leaders of the Humanities Division to serve as the John Ashley Cotton Scholar’s Chair. Jim Concannon published four articles—two with Westminster students on stem cells and the impact of the Sputnik Era. He collaborated with Westminster students on two presentations at the Mid-Western Regional Conference of the National Science Teachers Association and did one solo presentation. Professor Concannon published a book on undergraduate engineering students beliefs. Kurt Jefferson was one of 12 academics selected nationwide from 135 applicants to participate in a training seminar this month in Amman, Jordan, on teaching Islam and Middle Eastern culture.
Staff Kris Lensmeyer is Secretary for the District VI CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) and Conference Chair for the 2010 Conference in Kansas City. In collaboration with Melanie Barger, Gina Campagna, and Dale Ley, she presented at the 2010 CASE conference. Amanda Stevens and Lori Fox received a national programming award for the RESPECT campaign as most creative program of the year at the peer health educators national conference in November in Orlando (one of ten awards given from 500 applicants). They presented a break out session at the conference titled “Small Campuses Stepping Up in Tobacco Control”. Tonya Veltrop completed her term as Chair-Elect for the five state Region IV of the Association of International Educators and will serve as Chair in 2010 and Co-Chair of the regional conference in Omaha. Your Generosity at Work Westminster Fund The Westminster Fund is a vehicle for providing critical funds annually in support of the general scholarship fund, student programs and student activities. These contributions have a daily impact because they cover the most important immediate needs of the College – student support. Although annual in nature, these gifts to the Westminster Fund last a lifetime in terms of enhancing the Westminster experience.
Annual Scholarships and Awards A donor may choose to establish an annual scholarship in their name or in honor of someone else such as a former professor or family member. All annual scholarships are awarded within the academic year. A donor may augment his endowed scholarship with an annual scholarship gift, to assist a student even more.
Endowed Scholarships and Awards An endowed fund is an account, the principal of which is preserved in perpetuity. Only the income earned by that account is spent and, then, only for the purposes agreed upon by the donor. The College Trustees have established the minimum for an endowed scholarship at $25,000, which may be pledged over as many as five years. A scholarship can be named in honor of a donor, a family member, a special purpose or any number of possibilities. When you choose to endow a scholarship, you make an investment in the power of education to transform an individual’s life. You provide the opportunity for generations of students and partner with the College to help prepare leaders of character who are committed to the values of integrity, fairness, respect and responsibility. You give something of lasting value, and show your gratitude to Westminster College and your belief in its commitment to the future.
Programs Westminster College’s history and tradition is steeped in excellence due to our outstanding liberal arts undergraduate programs. Private donations have been critically important in the development of four outstanding student/faculty centers, each focusing on increasing the opportunities for success in particular campus communities. The Tomnitz Learning Opportunities Center is one of the nation’s oldest and best support programs for students with learning differences. The Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence embodies the Westminster College Faculty’s commitment to the art of teaching. The CTE’s primary goal is to create an atmosphere in which faculty can share ideas, questions, and challenges they face in classes and with individual students and also to receive the resources needed to continue development into one of the nation’s best teaching faculty. The Churchill Institute, comprised of the remaining two centers—the Bill Emerson Center for Leadership and Service and the Center for Engaging the World—as well as the National Churchill Museum, leverages Westminster’s unique connection to the legacy of Winston Churchill and other global leaders. The Institute is the hub of programs dedicated to leadership, global affairs, and service to our community. Programs within the Take-A-Friend-Home Program, Symposium on Democracy and the John Findley Green Lecture Series. These are just some of the world-class programs Westminster provides its students, in large part because of the charitable contributions of alumni and friends of the College. 8
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
The Westminster Fund The Westminster Fund is an annual giving program that raises unrestricted and designated monies for the most critical needs of the College. The Westminster Fund encompasses gifts that can be made and spent within one fiscal year. A yearly gift by loyal Westminster Donors provides vital support to every aspect of a student’s time spent at Westminster.
What it supports The Westminster Fund supports the students! It has a daily impact and touches the lives of each and every student on campus. The WF covers all areas of the Westminster Experience including: scholarships, academic and classroom needs, clubs, programs, and maintaining a magnificent campus.
Why the need? Your annual gift supports the College by: • Making a difference to each and every student on campus. • Helping provide the tools for the professors to effectively educate the students with the most state-of-the art equipment that is available. • Helping Westminster receive grant money from corporations and foundations. • Increasing Westminster’s status in regional and national rankings. • Retaining and increasing the value of a Westminster degree.
What is the alumni-giving percentage? The alumni-giving percentage is calculated by how many solicitable donors give back to their alma mater. The rate carries enormous weight in the national college rankings. Each fall, U.S. News & World Report announces its group of top liberal arts colleges in the country. The alumni-giving percentage of each institution plays a significant role in helping to determine the best of the best. It shows that the alumni of Westminster believe in the education they received and want to continue the legacy to future students.
The Westminster Fund is branching out… The Westminster Fund is expanding to include designated areas of the campus. Although raising unrestricted gifts is critical, you can now designate your gift to the area that means the most to you and that helped shape your life while attending Westminster. Designated areas include: Natural & Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Athletics, Student Activities and annual Scholarships.
Phone-a-thon The phone-a-thon is the most cost effective way to raise annual fund gifts. Westminster students place calls to alumni, parents and friends to thank them for their past support and ask if they would like to renew their donation for the current fiscal year. Calls are placed during a Fall and a Spring session. Each student caller actually receives some type of scholarship, so they know about the impact your gifts make. The phone-a-thon students love talking to each and every person they reach. They love the stories you share with them and learn firsthand about the history of the College. The Westminster Fund fiscal year 2010 goal was $575,000. Because of YOU the Westminster Fund raised $590,477.00 or 7% over the projected goal. Every person on campus cannot thank you enough! The Phonea-thon goal for fiscal year 2010 was set at $100,000 for unrestricted gifts. The students raised $115,594.82 or 115.6% of their goal. Thank you for your loyal support! 2009-10 LOYALTY

Your Generosity at Work
The Churchill Institute Since 1969, Westminster has been the guardian of the memory of Sir Winston Churchill in the United States. Churchill symbolizes Westminster’s commitment to liberal learning, to service-centered leadership, and to engagement in the global community. While what Churchill accomplished is remarkable, understanding how he made such an impact will ensure that his leadership continues to have a lasting effect on future generations. With the creation of the Churchill Institute at Westminster College in 2009, these disparate but complimentary ideas find expression in a single unifying entity. Both academic and experiential, the Institute educates and inspires young men and women from the United States and overseas. The Churchill Institute would not be possible without private support. It’s that generosity that will continue to allow the Institute to instill all Westminster students with both the courage and confidence to lead, but also the requisite skills to do so—and to lead whenever and wherever the opportunities present themselves. The Institute both coordinates and directs programs and people from these three distinct but interrelated and complimentary entities: the National Churchill Museum, the Center for Engaging the World, and the Bill Emerson Center for Leadership and Service. At the same time, the Institute contains signature programs of its own such as the Fulbright-Robertson Visiting Professor, the Symposium on Democracy, and the International Lecture Series (including the Green, Kemper, and IBM). As the premier center for Churchill-related activity in the United States, the National Churchill Museum brings to life the lessons of perseverance and of courage, and the necessity for leaders to have a breadth of vision and experience in an inspirational fashion. The Museum provides the basis for lectures and seminars to help Westminster students understand who Churchill was, what he did, and why his actions were significant during his time. It demonstrates how Churchill retains a contemporary relevance for today’s leaders. The Center for Engaging the World delivers an educational experience rooted in global understanding to all students, through such programs as the Transnational Studies major, cross-cultural experiences on campus, and both study abroad and overseas internship opportunities. In doing so, it helps students understand the connection between a liberal arts education and leadership in a global context. 12
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
Named for Westminster alumnus William Emerson, Class of 1959, the Bill Emerson Center for Leadership and Service offers practical application of our students’ international education through extensive leadership education and training coupled with both local and international service experiences. The Center includes the leadership studies minor and certification program taught by tenured faculty. It is the blending of inspiration, education, and leadership that is the essence of the Churchill Institute.
Other Student Centers and Programs The mission of Student Life is to complement and enhance Westminster’s mission through a dynamic student developmental experience. This includes creating a safe, healthy, and comfortable living-learning community, involving students in meaningful activities and athletics, and providing opportunities that foster experiential learning, character, and career development, a sense of service, and spiritual growth. Without the support of private donations, Westminster would be unable to provide this dynamic experience. Student activities, including those that help define the Westminster experience for some such as Greek life and athletics, would not be as engaging and meaningful as they are without the support they receive from private gifts. Student centers and programs such as the Tomnitz Learning Opportunities Center and the Undergraduate Scholars Forum are made possible because of generous contributions to the College. Tomnitz Learning Opportunities Center: The Learning Opportunities Center began in the 1970s as a program to assist learning-disabled students, one of the first programs of its kind amongst higher education institutions in the country. Since then, it has expanded to include a wide range of programs that impact the lives of all Westminster students. The components include (1) the Learning Disabilities Program, which provides comprehensive and personalized academic support services to students with professionally diagnosed learning disabilities; (2) the Reading and Study Skills Program (RSSP), a two-semester program offered during the freshman year to give special attention to incoming freshmen who have the potential for success, but whose preparation for college has been inadequate in some way; (3) the Peer Tutoring Program, which offers academic support to all students enrolled in general education courses through specially-trained student tutors; (4) the Academic Assistance Program, which targets students on probation, focusing particularly on time-management skills in order to develop a strong sense of personal responsibility. In 2009, the center became the Tomnitz Family Learning Opportunities Center in recognition of the significant financial contributions made to the center by alumnus Don Tomnitz ’70 and his family. Thanks to the support from the Tomnitz family and other contributors to the center, the strengths of the LOC are its innovation and adaptability, as the staff continually assesses the needs of individual Westminster students and designs special programs to meet these needs. The Undergraduate Scholars Forum: Westminster has long been committed to promoting undergraduate research and to develop young scholars. Since 2008, The Undergraduate Scholars Forum has allowed the College to highlight our students’ achievements in a formal and comprehensive way. Westminster students from 15 departments offer paper, poster, and multi-media presentations, along with creative performances while other students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees gather together to learn from these presenters. The USF is largely funded through private support of individuals. Thanks to these types of gifts, the USF continues to grow in number of presentations each year and helps provide the opportunity for students to see themselves as “scholars” with important learning experiences to share. The USF also speaks to the core of the College’s educational mission as it brings the entire campus together to learn as a close, caring community. 2009-10 LOYALTY

Tom Christensen ’86 is best known in the local business community for his honesty and integrity and the owner of an asphalt construction company. He expanded his business to include an asphalt plant in Millersburg, MO and has received the Missouri Asphalt Pavement Associations’ Quality Paving Award for several outstanding paving projects. In 1996, his Company was named Fulton Area Development “Business of the Year”. His civic leadership has been wide-ranging and diverse. He has been a member of the Board of Associates since 2000 and has donated his time and talents to the upkeep of many areas of the Westminster community. He is a current Board Member of the Fulton Area Development Corp., the YMCA of Callaway County, the Callaway Bank Advisory Board, and a past board member of the Missouri Asphalt Pavement Association. His most important “success” however, may well be his family, his wife Katherine and their (4) sons, Mitchell (a student at Westminster class of 2011), Wilson, Nicholas and Samuel. Tom Christensen was selected to receive the Fulton Colleges/Board of Associates 2009 Westminster Alumni Service Award.
How was your Westminster student experience? It was great. I am still in contact with many of the friends I made on campus and the professors. My son, Mitchell, has some of the same professors that I had. I didn’t realize until later in life how much the faculty and students of Westminster helped me be prepared for any of life’s challenges. What was your first memory of Westminster? My first memory was the day I moved into the Quad. I really didn’t know what to expect and had just said good-bye to my family. I was amazed at how many people were at the Quad during move-in. The student response was great with helping many of the families 14

move-in to their dorm room. I felt welcomed my very first step on campus. I am still good friends with my suitemates and we connect during Alumni Weekend. What do you do when you aren’t being a generous donor to the College? I own and operate a small construction company where we produce asphalt and provide asphalt paving service. My wife, Katherine, and I spend most of our time shuttling our kids to various activities. I also volunteer my time to the Fulton Colleges Fund. It is a local organization that raises money from area businesses and residents to raise money for Westminster. The organization offers nine Callaway County students a scholarship each year.
What is your personal philosophy on philanthropy and how does it relate to Westminster? I prefer to give back to my community and to those that made a difference in my life and someone else’s life. I like to see the results that my donations make and since I live and work in the Fulton area, I see the daily proof of how my gifts and gifts of other donors have been used wisely. I also like to support by giving my time and talents whenever possible.
philosophy and networking from the very moment I stepped on campus. I see the College thrive and I want to be a part of that. Why do you think others donate to Westminster?
My wife Katherine. She is a very big influence and we make decisions together about how we plan our gifts to the organizations that mean the most to us.
Because I feel that all of the alumni that walk through the columns as freshman and again as seniors have built such a strong connection to Westminster. The experience has shaped who we are and has left lasting memories of hard work, commitment, and the friendships that will last a lifetime. I think most people want to give to an organization that they have a connection with and know that their gifts are used wisely. What better way than to educate our youth?
Who was the most influential faculty or staff member during your time on campus?
The interest and excitement about financially supporting Westminster is growing. Why do you think that is?
Who influenced your philanthropic philosophy?
There are several and in no particular order: • Professor Butch Lael for all of the interesting history classes he taught. • Professor Bob Hoerber for all of the business courses which helped me in my career.
People can see that the College is evolving and becoming more diverse whereas a lot of other liberal arts colleges are not as prevalent in the diversity area. Westminster is embracing a liberal arts education while maintaining its history.
• Professor Wayne Zade for the English classes that taught me how to communicate with others.
What’s it like to be a donor to Westminster and a member of the President’s Club?
• Professor Bill Young who rounded me out with classics and philosophy. (As a sideline…my son Mitchell has also been taught by Professor Lael, Hoerber and Young)
I feel fortunate that I can help out and a personal satisfaction that I gave back to a college that gave so much to me.
• And last, but not least, Pat Kirby who was my Dean. You have been donating to Westminster for 18 years. Why do you believe supporting Westminster is such a good investment? Because I had such a good experience while at Westminster. I received the guidance, business
Is there anything that you think others would be interested in knowing about Westminster? I think others would be proud to know that President Barney and Jane Forsythe are extremely engaged in college and community events. They play a very active and leadership role in many areas of the community and have a genuine passion for the College. 2009-10 LOYALTY

careers you could imagine. For more than twenty years, I have been helping generous people make a difference. Not only have I met a lot of wonderful people, I get to be a part of helping them act as change-agents in our society. When Dr. Forsythe invited me to join the staff at Westminster College as the new Director of Planned Giving, I was impressed with his leadership and his vision for developing value-based leaders among every student from every discipline of study—and this includes a good number of international students. What a great mission!
My own academic career has included earning a B.S. from Oklahoma State University, post-graduate course work at the University of Nebraska, and completing additional studies that have earned me the designations of Certified Financial Planner® and Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy. Helping a donor accomplish his/her charitable objectives is very satisfying—and thoughtful planning often allows a donor to do more for both his/her family and for Westminster College. Please call me at 573-590-5020 or email me at lee.jantzen@ westminster-mo.edu. You can also visit our planned giving website: www.wclegacy.org and learn about the many types of gift plans available. I would love to visit with you about how you might include Westminster in your plans. Such visits are always confidential and with no obligation. WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
The People Westminster College is its people. Beautiful buildings and grounds are meaningless
unless occupied by a rich array of talented, dedicated, and engaged students, faculty, and staff. We need the capacity to attract and retain the best and brightest of each who can add to our distinctive brand and mission. The best and the brightest are attracted to our unique mission, but too often we lack the resources to attract and retain them. Building endowments to support student scholarships and faculty chairs must be the cornerstone of our efforts. Additional resources in these areas will allow the College to attract the talent to teach and learn at a national institution. Scholarships focused on need or merit increase Westminster’s reach while simultaneously making a direct impact on a student’s ability to attend college. Faculty chairs are a critical way for Westminster to attract and reward the best faculty while providing the funds necessary for them to advance in their disciplines. These endowments will stand the test of time as generations of students and faculty are touched by the legacy of these donors.
Building endowments to support student scholarships and faculty chairs must be the cornerstone of our efforts.
Our people are already putting Westminster on the map as a leader in student engagement (top 10% in the nation) and innovative programs like the self-design major and Transnational Studies, one of only two such programs in the country. With the resources to support them, our faculty and staff are the right people to lead us to even higher peaks. Endowed Departments and Positions: • John E. Simon Department of Accounting, Business, Economics and Management Information Systems • John E. Simon Chair in Business • William Gordon Buckner Chair in Business • John Ashley Cotton Scholar’s Chair • Cameron Day Endowed Chair • Robertson Founder’s Chair in British History

History is VERY important. Sir Winston is history. An example: I have my doubts if anyone in Washington has read Sir Winston’s The Malakand Field Force, which details his participation in an 1897 military campaign in an area now part of Pakistan – the old Northwest Frontier in India. There is no better place from which to spread Sir Winston’s message than from the National Churchill Museum. – Robert L. DeFer, Board of Governors of the Association of Churchill Fellows
