PRESIDENT’S

COLUMN

Dear Friend of Westminster:

T

hose of you who remarked about how much you enjoyed last year’s “Legends, Legacies, and Leaders” profiles in Leadership will be equally happy when you learn more about the new group being honored in this issue. These members of our Westminster community…past and present… have built the foundation for the Westminster experience our students enjoy today. Westminster is on the move because these movers and shakers have shaped our curriculum and campus life into an exciting and meaningful personal journey for each student, preparing them to be successful and to make a difference in the world. These dedicated professionals and so many others like them on our campus have played critical roles in attracting larger numbers of top students who want to enroll here every year. These leaders are a major reason why we are experiencing our ninth straight year of record enrollment. Thanks to their efforts, we have been able to establish an educational environment where students feel a great deal of personal satisfaction. Alumni, family, and friends who have been touched and influenced by these leaders give back generously to Westminster with time, talent, and treasure to ensure future generations enjoy the Westminster experience. The exciting academic and personal experiences our faculty and staff have established at Westminster have garnered a great deal of national attention as well. Westminster is consistently recognized every year by prestigious educational institution evaluators such as The Princeton Review, U.S.News & World Report, and Forbes magazine as one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest. Westminster College is consistently ranked nationally among colleges and universities for its academic excellence and educational value. Westminster has also become nationally ranked as one of the most diverse small liberal arts colleges in the nation with 16 percent of its student population representing 67 different countries. What you will find in this edition of Leadership is what everyone who comes to Westminster discovers. The wonder of Westminster is its people and their passion…people who provide the personal care and attention that nurtures student success. Thanks for all you do to make this success possible. Go Blue Jays!

George B. Forsythe, Ph.D.

WESTMINSTER

IS ON THE MOVE 8

Leadership spring 2010

When members of the Westminster family get together, they love to talk about their favorite topic. What’s that, you say? Why, Westminster, of course. Blue Jay pride is contagious, and with all the exciting developments taking place at the College these days, we have plenty to say. Westminster is definitely on the move, and Leadership has compiled the top ten reasons. So sprinkle some of these facts into your next Westminster conversation.

01 Off the Charts Westminster experienced its 9th straight year of record enrollment, starting the school year with 1,080 strong and a wait list of prospectives. Now that the school has already reached its long term goal of 1,000 students, the challenge will be choosing among all the premiere students that want to attend Westminster.

02 The Bus Stops Here Westminster draws 11,000 visitors a year to view the state of the art attractions found in the National Churchill Museum in memory of Winston Churchill, who delivered his famous “Iron Curtain speech on the campus in 1946. The Museum is housed in a magnificent 17th century English church—the oldest in North America, and tourists can also experience the largest contiguous section of the Berlin Wall found in the United States.

03 Life Lab 101 Westminster offers students a wide range of exciting life experiences such as dissecting in a cadaver lab or investing real money in stocks and bonds with the Blue Blazers Investment Club. All freshmen learn how to adjust to college life together by living in The Quad. Domestic students can go home to live with international students for the summer through the Take A Friend Home program or study abroad and take courses in places like Belize, France, Argentina, Spain and Rwanda. Happiness with the Westminster experience is evident from the extremely high student retention rate, which has remained around 83% for the past four years, and student satisfaction assessment scores higher than most comparable liberal arts colleges. 90% of Westminster students have a favorable image of the College and 86% of all seniors would choose Westminster if they could start college over again.

04 The Midwest Melting Pot Westminster is now known as the 4th most diverse small liberal arts college in the country with 16% of its student body coming from 67 different countries. In the past five years, the non-white domestic student population has increased from 11% to 30%. For those wishing to gain the global perspective for the life they will lead in the future, the campus of Westminster offers the opportunity to live and learn in a world classroom.

05 Where Everyone Knows Your Name Westminster takes Cheers a step further. Not only does everyone know your name in the Westminster close-knit, caring community, students call professors by their first name and have their home phone numbers when they need help with courses. Students receive the kind of individualized attention necessary to achieve academic and personal success. Students, faculty and staff all interact in social activities and service projects. Westminster is a home away from home where students have a second family.

06 The Westminster Network Westminster alumni and friends are always there to help whether another member of our Westminster family is looking for a job, a dentist, an internship, or just some information. Westminster has an incredible level of networking that helps its students and graduates to be successful. Approximately 94% of all graduates going into the job market have positions within the first six months.

07 Nexus of Knowledge Westminster is a true nexus of knowledge with several vital centers that offer specific educational opportunities for its community. Through the Emerson Center for Leadership and Service, students receive leadership and character development training and can even earn a leadership minor. The Emerson Center also involves the entire campus community in service learning projects on campus and in the community. The new Center for Engaging the World coordinates all international programming and events at Westminster and works to expand the use of global topics and international perspectives within the curriculum. The Learning Opportunities Center gives students the support and tools they need to succeed academically, offering reading and study skill help, peer tutoring, and learning disability assistance. The Center for Teaching Excellence provides the environment, programs, and resources for the professional development of Westminster instructors.

08 Opening New Doors Westminster constantly offers new doors to open with its continuing emphasis on renovating and expanding its beautiful campus. In recent years the campus grounds have been transformed thanks to the state of the art Wallace H Coulter Science Center, the new Mueller Leadership Hall which houses our dining services and college bookstore, renovation and renaming of the Churchill National Museum, and the new housing options North Hall, Westminster Apartments and the Beta House. Students will have the opportunity to live in new student townhouses, currently under construction, for the 2010 fall semester.

09 Cents and Sensibility Westminster students recognize what good sense it makes to attend a college where they receive top value for their money—a world class education at a reasonable price and where they can receive the financial support the need to enjoy the full Westminster experience. Ninety-seven percent of the student body qualifies for some portion of financial aid. Is it any wonder Forbes magazine ranked Westminster as the Top Value Missouri College or University this year?

Westminster alumni and friends continue to support the College in spite of a challenging economy. The True Blue Society of those who have given every year for more than 15 to Westminster stands at 166 and last year we had 287 President’s Club members. The “True Blue” realize that giving at any level makes a difference in the quality of the instruction, resources, and facilities that our students enjoy.

It’s overwhelming.

The first thing that strikes you as you enter Steve Brauer’s conference room and office is the sheer quantity of photos and memorabilia. You try to focus on him as you talk, as politeness would dictate, but you find your eyes wandering the room. Pictures of Steve with presidents, prime ministers and sports stars crowd the walls and bookcases. It’s all evidence of the myriad of experiences Steve has had since graduating from Westminster in 1967.

championship team. “The high point of the last 15 years had to be the seventh game of the 2006 National League Championship against New York,” he remembered. “It was a tied game, down to the ninth inning when Yadi (Yadier Molina) parked one over the left field wall. Shea Stadium, usually the noisiest in baseball, suddenly became silent as a tomb…Wow!…Baseball at it’s best!”

If you can pick up one thing in college it would be to develop critical thinking skills and remain curious throughout your life.

From 2001 to 2003, Steve also served as United States Ambassador to Belgium. He managed a diverse mission with over 500 staff and represented the United States during a difficult time – the aftermath of the attacks September 11, 2001 and the time leading up to the Iraq War.

Philanthropy has always been a key part of his and his wife Camilla’s life. Charities throughout St. Louis have benefited from their involvement – the Art Museum, Boy Scouts, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Washington University (where he is now Board Chair) are just a few.

Suddenly you understand the origin of the vast array of memorabilia around you. They are signposts from a journey that has taken Steve Brauer from Westminster College to the Army to the executive suite to a championship locker room. While he learned a lot at Westminster, Steve says the real key has been knowing that “education takes place so far beyond college. If you can pick up one thing in college it would be to develop critical thinking skills and remain curious throughout your life.” In that respect, Steve’s experiences demonstrate the power of the liberal arts education that Westminster continues to offer. While he majored in economics, he has been called upon to lead in business, political, diplomatic, and philanthropic endeavors. No training program could prepare someone for such a diversity of roles and situations. His advice to today’s students is something that was told to him by Lee Hunter: “You are what you think about. Take advantage of your Westminster education by developing a curiosity about the world around you, and, in particular, how our free market economy works. A starting point would be reading the Wall Street Journal editorial page every day. …Think, observe, and question well beyond what your academic courses cover.” He assures us that this is the path to a rich life. If his office walls are any indication, we believe him.

If you are an alum who’s been successful thanks to your time at Westminster College...

The original Westminster Hall, circa 1905

OutA tradition of abegins Fire... An excerpt from William E. Parrish’s Westminster College An Informal History, 1851-1999

A

major tragedy struck the Westminster campus! Friday, September 10, 1909, had been a typical early autumn day in Fulton. Classes would begin the following week at all three colleges, and the townspeople were enjoying their last weekend respite before the students descended en masse. Most of the conversation around town concerned the Callaway grand jury which planned an investigation of bootlegging in the county. By the close of the day Fultonians had something far more spectacular to talk about. At nine o clock that evening someone discovered fire in the attic of Westminster chapel. It spread quickly, fanned by a slight breeze from the southeast. Westminster Hall, immediately adjacent to the north and connected to the chapel by a corridor, stood in real danger! The leaping flames attracted neighboring residents and other townspeople. With several hundred on hand, efforts were made to clean out the main building its roof already ablaze Working industriously, volunteers saved the college records and files, located on the first floor, in their entirety. The News Letter, scheduled to go to the post office the following morning, was carried in several directions to be reassembled on Monday with an “Extra” describing the fire. Fortunately the workers also salvaged all of the mailing apparatus and lists and the addressograph. Attention next turned to the library. Because of overcrowded conditions in the old building, its volumes were scattered. The workers rescued some 3,300 on the ground floor, but a similar number of lesser used books on the third floor were lost as were most of the periodicals awaiting binding in the first floor annex. As rescue operations continued, Fulton’s volunteer firemen sought in vain to stem the conflagration. The city’s water mains did not reach the college at this time (they would be extended the following summer to both Westminster and William Woods for future emergencies), so the fire fighters had to rely on the college well and Stinson Creek. The pressure was low; the fire high and hard to reach. The flames could be seen for miles. One Westminster senior driving his girl east of Fulton that evening saw the luminous spectacle and hurried his buggy down Fifth Street toward the blaze. By the time they arrived the couple could but sit forlornly gazing up at the fiery scene at the top of the hill. Their hearts, like those of so many other Fultonians, became heavy as memories of past events enjoyed there flooded over them. All was rapidly becoming ashes. The Gazette summed up feelings pretty well: “Much sentiment clings to the old building, and it was all that many alumni and former students could do on the night of the fire to keep back tears. It ceased to meet the requirements of the college many years ago, but it was loved by the people of Fulton and by hundreds of former students.” Once it became evident that nothing further could be done to save the buildings or their contents, President Kerr’s thoughts immediately turned to salvaging what had promised to be a large student body for the coming year. At 11:15 Friday night he sat down in the office of Ovid Bell, alumnus and publisher of the Gazette, to begin writing an “Extra” for inclusion with the regular News Letter mailing on Monday morning. He described briefly what had happened and announced that “there would not be a day of delay in opening the college year.” Asking “that word be sent far and near to that effect,” he urged all students to report on schedule, promising “every parent who intended to place a boy in Westminster this year, that not a student will be discommoded or suffer a particle of loss of time or opportunity because of this fire.” He outlined the temporary arrangements already being made to take care of every aspect of college life. “Come on, come promptly, come enthusiastically,”

17

he admonished. “Westminster will go on stronger than ever.” To this, Bell appended a plea to the alumni to rally behind the college in its hour of need. “The present disaster ought to be turned into the greatest blessing the college has ever experienced,” he wrote and urged a flood of contributions to build an “Alumni Chapel.” After snatching three hours of sleep, the president was up by six the next morning to survey the ruins. Speculation as to the cause of the fire centered on the possibility of defective wiring in the chapel attic. The two structures were a total loss. Only the charred walls and the towering columns which had guarded the entrance to the main edifice remained. The insurance companies readily agreed to pay the full $24,000 face value of the college’s policies. But this did not begin to cover an estimated loss of $50,000 minimum which would cost even more to rebuild. Nor did it pay for such irreplaceable items as out-of-print library volumes, the notes and manuscripts of professors, and the records of the literary societies...

the columns of old Westminster Hall would be left standing as a reminder of the historic past and symbol of strength for the future.

...By Wednesday, September 15, all was ready for registration. This proved vastly disappointing. In spite of the president’s efforts to forestall a slackening in enrollment, only 46 of some 75 reasonably sure prospects for new students” appeared. Ten days later Kerr reported that the student body numbered 113 as compared with 167 the previous year. Meanwhile condolences poured in upon him. A few of the letters contained donations, but most indicated that for a variety of reasons they could offer little more than sympathy. While treasuring these expressions of concern, the president openly deplored the lack of material evidence backing them up...

...The trustees continued to hold periodic meetings to plan Westminster’s future. They launched an all-out effort to raise funds. They hired architects Patton and Miller of Chicago with General Bell as consultant to draw up an overall campus plan, which appeared in November. In addition to a new $75,000 Westminster Hall, which would be strictly an academic structure, it called for a new library, gymnasium and student building, and chapel. At the strong urging of many alumni the columns of old Westminster Hall would be left standing as a reminder of the historic past and symbol of strength for the future. The pictures appearing in college publications looked impressive, and hopes ran high.

The story continues... Out of the ashes a great Westminster tradition was born. In the fall of 1929, the Skulls of Seven inducted the freshmen into the College by marching them through the historic columns for the first time. Westminster students and alumni only walk through the Columns after taking the Athenian Oath during New Student Convocation and back through the columns as graduates entering the world. As Westminster’s most revered ceremony, this tradition has been one of the fondest memories of Westminster students and alumni for over ninety years.
