The 2023-2024 Honor Roll of Giving recognizes donors, new endowed scholarships and those who served in leadership capacities during the period July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024.

Westminster celebration stems from your generosity

Cue the confetti and applause as we celebrate an amazing year of generosity and support at Westminster! Ring the Victory Bell! Titan alums and friends of Westminster demonstrated their commitment to supporting and enhancing the education students receive at Mother Fair in a visible and awe-inspiring way this fiscal year. Together, more than $10.1 million in contributions were received this year, more than twice the amount raised in the previous fiscal year. This issue of the Honor Roll of Giving celebrates each individual or group that made donations to the College during the 2024 fiscal year.

We are grateful for each gift and each donor. Every gift has an impact, whether it is for a specific endowed scholarship fund; a capital project; an academic, athletic or student affairs department; the Student Emergency Fund; or for the important Wherever Needed Most Fund and Westminster Fund. As you review the names included in the various giving clubs, please join me in offering gratitude and appreciation for their support. The “We in Westminster” has demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of the College this year.

The Honor Roll also illustrates three patterns of giving that have helped distinguish this year’s results. First, note the impact of legacy gifts, those that came to the College through estates, which were especially meaningful and helpful this year. For example, the Frank ’52 and Shirley Jones estate gift of more than $2 million helped us meet the unexpected costs of repairing and updating the Natatorium. The Jere Stecklein ’73 estate gift of more than $1 million helped fund the much-needed repairs in the Ridl Gym and key repairs to the campus heating systems. These legacy gifts will continue to benefit students for decades—a true example of Titans generously giving back to Mother Fair so that the outstanding experiences they had as students can be enjoyed by students now and into the coming years.

Second, remember the excitement surrounding the more than $1 million gift from Bill ’52 and C.J. ’63 Maurer that came with a challenge match for other Titan alumni and friends. This generous challenge has already prompted more than $450,000 in gifts, and we hope to reach the full match by December 2024. Smaller challenge matches prompted involvement in the two crowdsourcing campaigns in November and May as well, with a variety of donors encouraging others to give by matching the dollar amount of gifts during each specific campaign. Such generosity inspires generosity from others.

Third, see the growth in recurring giving from those who have joined the Coffee Club and the new Champion Builders athletic donor club. In these groups, donors opt in to give to the College automatically each month. These donors have made giving to Westminster part of their monthly routine and allowed the College to count on their support. Their giving is then recognized with either a unique mug given annually to those in the Coffee Club or a lawn flag for those in the Champion Builders group. We appreciate all of our successive-year donors, knowing that some have made gifts to Westminster each year for decades. Such faithfulness in support is a testimony to the love and appreciation alumni and friends have for the College and their gratitude for its impact on their growth and development.

As we launch a new academic year, students, faculty, and staff are already benefiting from the generosity of our donors through needed financial aid, updated facilities, and enhanced opportunities. Let’s celebrate each gift, even as we look forward to the coming months as donors continue to faithfully provide support for key priorities and initiatives at Westminster. Toss the confetti and ring the bells as we shout a grateful thank you to all. It is indeed a great day to be a Titan!

THE ANNUAL FUND IS A CONSISTENT SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR THE FOLLOWING KEY PRIORITIES THAT ENABLE STUDENTS TO ENJOY A RICH, DIVERSE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

Student Aid: 100% of Westminster students receive some form of financial aid. Gifts to the Westminster Fund assist the College in keeping Westminster affordable.

Student Services: Tutoring, mental and physical health assistance, student-run programs, career guidance and internship opportunities are among the many services provided to Westminster students.

Instruction & Academic Support: We boast a studentfaculty ratio of 12:1. Professors integrate real-world and collaborative experiences with academic instruction, creating educational experiences grounded in the liberal arts tradition.

Athletics: Over half of the students at Westminster participate on one of 22 PAC teams, learning the importance of teamwork, discipline and leadership.

» INVESTING IN WESTMINSTER

WESTMINSTER RECEIVED HISTORIC $10.1 MILLION IN 2023-2024—INCLUDING FOUR GIFTS OF $1 MILLION OR MORE. Alumni donors Will ’53 and Carol Jean (Young) Maurer ’62 provided a more than $1 million lead challenge gift designed to encourage additional contributions toward the last phase of the Hoyt Science Center Renovation and Expansion Project. The Maurers’ gift and additional challenge gifts are being used to update the environmental science, computer science, mathematics, psychology, neuroscience and physics offices, labs and classrooms in the center. A $2.2 million undesignated gift from the estates of Frank ’52 and Shirley Jones is being used to fund necessary renovations and repairs to the Westminster Natatorium. A $1 million undesignated bequest from alumnus Jere Stecklein ’73 helped fund repairs in the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in the Memorial Field House and some other critical systems repairs on campus.

A $1 million estate gift from Fred Sullivan is being used for the final phase of the Hoyt project and to endow the Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience, enabling students and faculty to collaborate on biology-related undergraduate research projects. The fund was established in memory of Sullivan’s wife, Carol Dietz Sullivan ’59

WESTMINSTER WAS AWARDED AN APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION (ARC) GRANT to support the development of an oncampus high-fidelity nursing simulation lab that will benefit current nursing students and first responders in the region. This $437,351 award is part of a $54 million package supporting 64 projects in 217 coal-impacted counties through ARC’s POWER (Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization) Initiative, which directs federal resources to economic diversification projects in Appalachian communities affected by job losses in coal mining, coal power plant operations, and coal-related supply chain industries.

» INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

THE OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AT WESTMINSTER established a new educational initiative, a seven-week “Changing the World, One Community at a Time” workshop for community members and Westminster students. The workshop challenged how participants think about how small- and large-scale change happens in the world and featured a variety of speakers, hands-on experiences and active bridge-building between Westminster’s campus and the local community.

THE ‘BEYOND THE QUAD’ COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE, encouraging students to make connections with residents of the local region, launched in 2023-2024. Beyond the Quad provided several arts-based opportunities for students to engage with New Wilmington and its residents.

» ACCOLADES & RECOGNITIONS

WASHINGTON MONTHLY, which focuses on schools that contribute to the public good, named Westminster among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the country. Jumping 26 spots from last year in the magazine’s “Best Liberal Arts Colleges” list, we are one of only two Western Pennsylvania colleges to make the Top 100 list. We were also named a “Best Bang for the Buck College.”

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, in its 2024 Best Colleges publication, Westminster jumped to the 112 spot among the best liberal arts colleges in the nation. We continue to earn high marks as a Top Performer on Social Mobility school, ranking 16th in the nation. The Top Performers list assesses how well colleges and universities graduate economically disadvantaged students.

Endowed Scholarships Awards, Prizes & Programs

The following endowed funds were established during the 2023-2024 fiscal year through contributions from alumni and friends of Westminster College for the purpose of providing supplemental sources of financial assistance to students who meet the criteria set by the donors.

Dr. Edgar Black ’69 & LaDonna Stoops Black Scholarship

A native of Apollo, Pennsylvania, Dr. Edgar Black majored in chemistry at Westminster College. His ultimate career was in internal medicine as a clinician, educator and administrator. Mrs. LaDonna Stoops Black, from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, had a career as a technical illustrator and scientific editor. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial aid to a deserving student from Western Pennsylvania planning to enter a current, critical needs profession. At the time of establishment, such professions would include educators (teachers), nurses, mental health and substance abuse counselors, and statisticians.

Dr. Jay D. Buchanan ’66 & Elaine Rhinesmith Buchanan ’66 Scholarship

The Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan Scholarship, inaugurated in 2024, stands as a testament to the benevolence of 1966 graduates Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan, distinguished alumni of Westminster College and fervent advocates of lifelong learning. Their dedication to education transcends generations, inspiring the establishment of this scholarship to nurture future scholars. The Buchanan Scholarship, founded upon the couple’s shared values of learning and service, is for aspiring scholars, empowering them to pursue their educational dreams and contribute meaningfully to society, echoing the legacy of Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan. This scholarship aims to acknowledge the value of a liberal arts education and the key role it plays in lifelong learning. This scholarship will offer financial support to a deserving Westminster College student who possesses both the interest and determination to pursue a higher education degree but lacks the necessary financial resources to do so. By providing this assistance, this scholarship seeks to empower motivated individuals to achieve their academic goals and unlock opportunities that might otherwise be difficult due to financial constraints.

Dr. Thomas W. Carver Scholarship

Dr. Thomas Carver served as the Westminster College Dean of Students from 1970 to 1978. Known for his professionalism and dedication to the students and community of Westminster, Dr. Carver left an indelible impression on his staff and student workers, many of whom pursued careers in higher education and achieved professional success in student affairs. During his tenure as Dean of Students, Dr. Carver exemplified true leadership through his vibrant personality and personable demeanor. Although Dr. Carver was only at Westminster for eight years, he considered himself a Titan until his passing in 2023. This scholarship is endowed in his honor by Dr. Thomas L. Bost ’74 and Mrs. Diann Bost. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a worthy, motivated individual in the achievement of their undergraduate degree at Westminster who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college.

Janet Owen Collier M’65 Scholarship

The Janet Owen Collier M’65 Scholarship was founded in 2024 with a profound belief in the transformative power of education. Established by Janet Owen Collier M’65, this scholarship aims to provide financial support to outstanding undergraduate students pursuing higher education at Westminster College. Janet’s commitment to education stems from her own experience as a student at Westminster, where she earned her master’s degree in 1965. Driven by the desire to alleviate the burden of student debt, the scholarship fund underscores the importance of empowering future generations through access to education. Janet’s dedication to education extends beyond her own academic achievements; she went on to dedicate numerous years to the field of teaching at Boardman High School in Boardman, Ohio. The establishment of this scholarship embodies Janet’s enduring commitment to fostering educational opportunities and reflects Westminster College’s ongoing mission

to nurture and support students in their pursuit of academic excellence. Through this scholarship, Janet’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift aspiring scholars, ensuring that they have the resources needed to achieve their educational aspirations and make meaningful contributions to society.

Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund

The Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund stands as a testament to Fred and Carol Sullivan’s enduring love for each other and their deep connection to Westminster College. This fund not only honors their commitment to education but also ensures that future generations of students will benefit from their generosity. Carol (Dietz) Sullivan, a 1959 Westminster College graduate, earned her degree in biology. This scholarship celebrates her academic journey and achievements, reflecting her interest in the biological sciences. Her legacy is commemorated through this fund, which aims to foster a spirit of inquiry and discovery among students. Fred Sullivan had a distinguished career at Dow Chemical, where his professional success is remembered alongside Carol’s academic legacy. The Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund’s primary objective is to provide resources that enable Westminster College students and faculty to collaborate on biology research projects.

Oscar & Theresa Geroni Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2024 through the estate of Ms. Claudia Geroni M’83 in memory of her parents, Oscar and Theresa Geroni. Ms. Geroni spent over 35 years in education. She retired from West Middlesex

School District, where she was employed for 30 years as a teacher and guidance counselor. It was her desire to provide financial assistance to promising Mercer County students seeking higher education who have the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. Students will be selected based on their combined merits of scholarship, financial need and community service.

Lisa A. Soler Lizanich Marketing Scholarship

Lisa Soler Lizanich graduated from Westminster in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She established this scholarship in 2023 to recognize and reward a high-performing student in marketing. She is thankful for the marketing degree she received from Westminster and the foundation it provided her for a successful business career in marketing and sales. The primary objective of this endowment is to retain Westminster College students who are majoring in marketing and who have the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college.

Matthew P. Lizanich Accounting Scholarship

Matthew P. Lizanich, who graduated from Westminster College in 1993 with a degree in accounting, established this scholarship in 2023 to recognize and reward a high-performing student in accounting. Matt is thankful for the accounting degree he received from Westminster and how it enabled him to have a successful career at Ernst and Young LLP where he obtained the level of partner. His wish is that this scholarship will enable other students to achieve success in their accounting careers. The primary

objective of this endowment is to retain Westminster College students who are majoring in accounting and who have the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college.

Matthew & Lisa Soler Lizanich Business Scholarship

In appreciation for the opportunities provided by a Westminster College education, Matthew and Lisa Soler Lizanich established this scholarship in 2023. Lisa Soler Lizanich graduated from Westminster in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She is thankful for the marketing degree she received from Westminster and the foundation it provided her for a successful business career in marketing and sales. Matthew Lizanich graduated in 1993 with a degree in accounting. He is thankful for the accounting degree he received from Westminster and how it enabled him to have a successful career at Ernst and Young LLP where he obtained the level of partner. Their wish is that this scholarship will enable other students to achieve success in their business careers. This scholarship will be awarded to a student with high academic achievement, majoring in the field of business.

Robert F. & Geraldine R. Navarra Scholarship

Roberta “Bobbi” Navarra ’78 established this scholarship in memory and honor of her parents, Robert F. Navarra M’67 and Geraldine Retort Navarra. Robert F. Navarra was born in Hillsville, Pennsylvania, on July 26, 1925. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1951. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he obtained a master’s from Westminster College in 1967. After four years as a civil service employee, Mr. Navarra began working for the New Castle Area School District in 1955 as a teacher, coach and counselor. He later became an administrator, serving as assistant principal until his retirement in 1986. Geraldine Retort Navarra was born in Hillsville on Sept. 27, 1932. She was a standout student at Bessemer High School and began her career immediately upon graduation. She began working as a receptionist at the Lawrence County Board of Assistance and quickly moved up the ranks, serving as personnel director until her retirement in 1985 after 35 years of continuous service. It was the Navarras’ wish that their only child, Bobbi, attend Westminster College. This scholarship was established by Bobbi to honor her parents and the role Westminster has played in her life.

Tracy L. Stuck ’88 Endowed Scholarship for Student Activities

This scholarship was established by Richard and Ellen Stuck, parents of Steven Stuck ’90 and Tracy Stuck ’88. This scholarship aims to honor Tracy L. Stuck’s service to the Westminster College Board of Trustees and provide

financial assistance to students engaged in out-of-classroom experiences that Tracy participated in, ultimately contributing to her career. Preference will be given to a Westminster College cheerleader or the Titan mascot, a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority or a Westminster College student leader recommended by the Vice President of Student Life.

Paul D. Trokhan ’68 & Marcia L. Trokhan Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry

Paul Trokhan graduated from Westminster College in 1968 with a degree in chemistry. After serving in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, he returned to graduate studies in chemical engineering at Lehigh University. Afterward, he was employed by Procter & Gamble in their research and development organization for 51 years, retiring in 2022. He was ultimately named to the position of senior vice president-senior innovator, the top position in Procter & Gamble’s technical career system. At the time of his retirement, he was a named inventor on more than 450 U.S. patents. The primary objective of this scholarship is to address the underrepresentation of females in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry and to provide financial aid to Westminster students, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable educational and professional environment.

Arthur “Skip” Winter ’73 & Judith “Judy” Engwer Winter ’73 Endowed Scholarship

In 2024, Skip and Judy Winter established this scholarship at Westminster College to demonstrate their support for the institution and their commitment to aiding individuals who possess the skills and ambition but lack the financial means to pursue their goals successfully. Skip, a 1973 graduate of Westminster College with a degree in history, utilized the education and leadership development he acquired at Westminster to excel in a successful career in management and procurement which spanned more than 40 years. Judy spent her 40-year career in the field of education and aims to inspire dedicated Westminster students to pursue their passion for educating young people. Through this endowed scholarship, the Winters aim to empower deserving individuals to overcome financial barriers and achieve their academic and professional aspirations at Westminster College. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a rising sophomore who has declared elementary/special education as their major, achieved academically and has demonstrated a strong, active, participatory interest in community service in their high school years and during their time as a student at Westminster.

Dear Friends,

Giving is fundamental to the success and continued growth of small liberal arts colleges like Westminster. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my appreciation for your financial support of the College during the past year. Your gifts helped Westminster move forward in fulfilling our historic mission and have helped support students from across this region and beyond.

All who have attended Westminster have benefited from the generosity of the individuals and foundations who supported the College. During the past year, Titan alumni and friends provided more than $10 million in gifts to support student financial aid, academic and student life programming, capital projects and endowment growth.

As we approach the College’s 175th anniversary, we are thankful for the gifts given by the many generations that have gone before us. These contributions support the many endowments used to recruit and retain outstanding faculty. They also allow investment in new capital projects and reinvestment in campus improvements that enhance our ability to meet the needs of those we serve. Most importantly, the philanthropy of our alumni and friends affirms that the educational experiences students have at Westminster prepare them for lives of success and purpose.

The College’s mission, “to help students develop competencies, commitments and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best,” is reflected through the dedication of our students, faculty and staff. As students attend class, prepare assignments, conduct research and complete internships and practicums, they are readying themselves for the next chapter in their lives. While some compete on athletic teams, others share their talents through music, speech, theater and art activities. Leadership is honed through participation in student government, clubs and organizations, and fraternities and sororities. Guided by a trusted faculty member, staff adviser or coach, Titans continue to pursue their dreams and accomplish their goals.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT
