Riverhouse Restaurant Fine Italian cuisine in a house by the river By Jananne Abel

T

he large house across the Mill Street Bridge from Port Chester on the Byram River, known for a long time as Amerigo’s and briefly as Max’s Steakhouse, has been transformed into a beautifully appointed Italian restaurant lovingly looked after by Teresa DiMeglio of Bronxville and her brother, Joseph Pasqualoni of Thornwood. Riverhouse Restaurant, so named because of its look and location, opened in December 2001 after nine months of renovations at 2 South Water St. in the Byram section of Greenwich. Prices are commensurate with those at other fine dining establishments, and while entrées come with a choice of side salad, ziti or spaghetti with house red or marinara sauce, vegetables are $5 extra, $7 for broccoli rabe. If you’re too full for anything else, the gelato, which comes in five flavors, is a treat in itself. Chef Edgar Alonzo of Yonkers, who worked at Italian restaurants in Westchester for 16 years prior to joining the Riverhouse staff, goes to market to purchase the fresh fish and produce and runs the kitchen operation. The wait staff, overseen by very capable maitre d’ Sergio Sandoval of Byram, is plentiful and of varying degrees of experience. Riverhouse has a number of regular customers, some of whom return every week. “People feel comfortable here. They like our hospitality,” said DiMeglio. “I want everyone to feel comfortable and at home.”

Nine months in the making Joseph Pasqualoni, who owns Pasqualoni’s Fine Foods, a deli and catering business in Hawthorne, always wanted to own a restaurant. Sister Teresa DiMeglio had just turned 40 and was looking for a change after 16 years in banking. She enjoys talking to people and planning parties, so managing a large restaurant with space for private parties was a natural fit. A family member told them the former

Max’s Steakhouse location was available, they went to see it and liked the spot on the river. The fact that it had a good-sized parking lot was a definite plus. “It just came upon us,” said DiMeglio, now 41, who oversees the day-to-day operations. Pasqualoni, 42, still runs the deli but is also involved in the restaurant and is usually on the premises on weekends. They both grew up around the restaurant business, with both sets of grandparents and their father having made their living in that industry. Originally intending to make a few renovations, the brother and sister team ended up gutting the whole restaurant and spending nine months to renovate it. They installed a tin ceiling in the bar, an attractive gas fireplace surrounded by stonework that you could mistake for real, additional matching stonework and wooden beams, widened the doorways for handicapped accessibility and created attractive new bathrooms. Upon entering the restaurant off the parking lot, you come face to face with a pleasing mural and a shiny stone floor and then walk upstairs to the dining room. Along the way a leafy motif is painted on the wall which is replicated in the bathrooms. If you check out the decorative wooden floorboards on the Please turn to page 10R

Spain

The English celebrate the Easter season with Morris dancers. These are dressed in white shirts and red sashes. They wear small bells around their wrists and ankles, so when they dance the bells jingle. They also wear ribbons and a straw hat with streamers. At church, there is a Eucharist where everyone drinks wine and eats bread—the bread to symbolize the body of Christ and the wine his blood. As in many other countries across the world, hot cross buns are also eaten.

On Easter Saturday, papiermâché images of the traitor Judas appear, some small, some huge, suspended over the streets or attached to poles. They are filled with fireworks, and at the appropriate moment, the fuses are lit, which is the signal for great rejoicing. Children also tie sticks together into a cross shape, weaving brightly colored wools into a diamond pattern. This cross is called “The Eye of God.”

Coptic Christians use hard boiled, painted eggs to play skittles at Easter. Some of the eggs are used as pins. Whoever cracks an egg wins them all.

Celebrations in Spain are magnificent in many towns and cities. Floats containing wonderfully decorated figures are used to represent each part of the Easter story. In Murcia, the table of the Last Supper contains real food. On Easter Sunday the table is carried around the town by 26 men. After the procession, they sit down and eat the food. Madrid celebrates one of the processions in complete silence. Valencia and Hellin have village

Before the egg became closely entwined with the Christian Easter, it was honored during many rite-ofspring festivals. The Romans, Gauls, Chinese, Egyptians and Persians all cherished the egg as a symbol of the universe. From ancient times eggs were dyed, exchanged and shown reverence. In Pagan times the egg represented the earth’s rebirth. The long, hard winter was over; the earth burst forth and was reborn just as the egg miraculously burst forth with life. The egg, therefore, was believed to have special powers. It was buried under the foundations of buildings to ward off evil; pregnant young Roman women carried an egg on their persons to foretell the sex of their unborn children; French brides stepped upon an egg before crossing the threshold of their new homes. With the advent of Christianity, the symbolism of the egg changed to represent not nature’s rebirth but the rebirth of man. Christians embraced the egg symbol and likened it to the tomb from which Christ rose. Old Polish legends blended folklore and Christian beliefs and firmly attached the egg to the Easter celebration. One legend concerns the Virgin Mary. It tells of the time Mary gave eggs to the soldiers at the cross. She entreated them to be less cruel and she wept. The tears of Mary fell upon the eggs, spotting them with dots of brilliant color. Another Polish legend tells of when Mary Magdalen went to the sepulcher to anoint the body of Jesus. She had with her a basket of eggs to serve as a repast. When

she arrived at the sepulcher and uncovered the eggs, lo, the pure white shells had miraculously taken on a rainbow of colors. Decorating and coloring eggs for Easter was the custom in England during the Middle Ages. The household accounts of Edward I, for the year 1290, recorded an expenditure of 18 pence for 450 eggs to be gold-leafed and colored for Easter gifts. The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the well-known goldsmith, Peter Carl Faberge. In 1883 the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Faberge to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie. The first Faberge egg was an egg within an egg. It had an outside shell of platinum white enamel which opened to reveal a smaller gold egg. The smaller egg, in turn, opened to display a golden chicken and a jeweled replica of the imperial crown. This special Faberge egg so delighted the Czarina that the Czar promptly ordered the Faberge firm to design further eggs to be delivered every Easter. In later years Nicholas II, Alexander’s son, continued the custom. Fifty-seven eggs were made in all. Ornamental egg designers believe in the symbolism of the egg and celebrate its significance by decorating eggs with superb artistry. Some use flowers and leaves from greeting cards, tiny cherubs, jewels and elegant fabrics, braids and trims to adorn the eggs. They are separated, delicately hinged and glued with epoxy and transparent cement and when completed are covered with a glossy resin finish. Although the omens and the mystery of the egg have disappeared today, the symbolism remains, and artists continue the old world tradition of adorning eggs.

boys continually beating drums during the celebration. It is estimated that between eight and ten thousand drums are beaten between Holy Wednesday and Easter Sunday in Hellin. In Seville are the most famous and most magnificent processions, which are organized by Corfradias, or Brotherhoods, which boy babies are entered into soon after they are born. The oldest Brotherhood dates back to 1340.

Greece At church, the priest lights a candle, and then using the flame lights the candles of his neighbors. This continues until all the candles are lit. Church bells ring and fireworks are let off. After the service, everyone carries the lighted candles home.

Hungary The girls of Hungary wear as many petticoats as they can to church. The boys sprinkle them with water when they come out of the church.

Switzerland The Swiss people wrap up warm and go out and roll eggs down the mountains. Fathers are supposed to whistle on Easter morning to attract the Easter hare. The hare comes in the house secretly and hides eggs in baskets for the children to find.

United States On Easter Monday the biggest egg rolling ceremony in the world takes place on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C. Children turn up in their best clothes carrying decorated baskets full of colored eggs. Brass bands play and members of the President’s family talk to the children and shake their hands. After the ceremony, the children roll their eggs down the White House lawn.

France The church bells in France stop ringing on the Thursday before Good Friday. The people are silent for a few days to remember the death of Jesus. On Easter Sunday the bells start to ring out again, symbolizing that Jesus is alive again. This is a time for celebration and the French hug and kiss one another. On Easter Sunday the children find eggs scattered around their rooms and hidden in nests in their yards. Looks like the Easter Bunny pays them a visit, too!

RESTAURANT REVIEW Riverhouse Restaurant: Fine Italian cuisine in a house by the river transoms that separate the dining room from the bar, you’ll see that the Pasqualoni siblings spared no expense or attention to detail to create the warm feeling inside their restaurant. It is decorated with dark wood offset by white walls ornamented with small shaded lights and photographs of ships. Light is also provided by a matching chandelier. Seating is at booths or tables, all elegantly set with white cloths. “We spent lots more than we expected,” said DiMeglio, although she couldn’t say how much.

and olive oil. The caponata is new, said DiMeglio, and has gone over well. The chef has also made a black olive spread and salmon pate for variety as well as focaccia to spice up the bread basket. Wild Scottish Salmon with a sweet Dijon mustard sauce and two butterfly shrimp ($28) was perfectly cooked, but the sauce, made with Grey Poupon, maple honey syrup, lemon juice and cracked black pepper, was too sweet for our liking. Our second entrée was the wonderful Sole Stuffed with

The attractive bar at Riverhouse Restaurant is a popular place. The restaurant seats 120 with a room for private parties that can accommodate up to 40 people. Larger groups may take over the entire restaurant on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. On Friday and Saturday nights the private room, just off the main dining room with decorative wooden and glass doors on either side that can be kept open or closed, is available for dining. There are another 22 seats at tables in the bar—just as lovely as the main dining room—where smoking is allowed. Now that they have been open for a year, the siblings have future goals to enhance their business. “Our goal is to have renovated the downstairs room by the last quarter of this year,” said DiMeglio. “We want to make it as nice as we can.” This private room has its own entrance and bathrooms and can accommodate 80 to 100 people. The following year they plan to add a deck for outside dining.

Crabmeat ($25) described earlier. Chicken Teresa ($18), named for DiMeglio, consisting of sautéed chicken on the bone with anchovies, capers, vinegar peppers, white wine and a touch of tomatoes, was another excellent choice. We all opted for the side salad, served with balsamic or red wine vinaigrette, rather than pasta to accompany our meal. We skipped the appetizers this time around but didn’t skimp on dessert—apple crumb cake with vanilla gelato and chocolate

sauce ($7), the luscious and surprisingly light pumpkin cheesecake with whipped cream and chocolate sauce ($7) and chocolate gelato with biscotti ($6). Our check came to $114.50. On my second visit with a party of two we began our meal with Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio 2001 ($35), an excellent selection—light, dry and full flavored—from the restaurant’s good-sized list of California, Italian and Australian red and white wines. It also contains a White Zinfandel rosé and a handful of champagnes. Prices range from $25 to $160 a bottle. The crab cake special appetizer served on a bed of greens with firecracker mayonnaise produced two small delectable cakes with a perfectly spiced dipping sauce ($13). The stuffed artichoke ($10), another special, was huge. The tasty stuffing was made with processed prosciutto and Genoa salami, chopped garlic, chicken stock, bread crumbs and pepper. I couldn’t eat all of it but made a good attempt. I requested that the Shrimp Scampi ($24) be served over angel hair pasta. The result was four large butterfly shrimp and loads of garlic slices in a buttery sauce over the pasta. Despite all the garlic, the taste was not overpowering. Chicken Scarpariella ($18) produced a huge portion of chicken pieces on the bone sautéed with hot(!) sausage, vinegar peppers and artichoke hearts, garlic, lemon, white wine, herbs and spices in a light brown spicy sauce—a mighty tasty combination. This time around we ended our meal with the homemade apple strudel which wasn’t available on our first visit. Made with raisins and delicate pastry and

Dinner for three and dinner for two I made two recent visits to Riverhouse Restaurant with family to check out the dining scene, one on a Sunday night with two other people and another on a Saturday night with my husband. On the first we had a glass of the house Pinot Grigio ($6)and a few soft drinks to complement our meal. It started with a basket of fresh Italian bread and a dish of olive oil packed with garlic cloves for dipping. On our second visit we also received a dish of Sicilian caponata, a relish of eggplant, tomatoes, onions, black olives, anchovies, capers

The dining room features a fireplace surrounded by eye-catching stonework to create a warm atmosphere.

Chef Edgar Alonzo of Yonkers whips up a sauce in the kitchen. served with vanilla gelato, it was scrumptious but a tad pricey at $10. We had two coffees and two refills and were charged for all of them (a total of $8). Our check for two totaled $125. Both times we had the same waiter who was pleasant but definitely inexperienced. However, he was backed up by the maitre d’ and busboys who helped make our dining experience a pleasant one. We witnessed other waiters at nearby tables who seemed to have more finesse and expertise.

Menu, Lunch In addition to the dishes recommended or sampled, the Riverhouse menu features a good selection of appetizers, salads, soups, chicken, veal and seafood entrees plus sides of meatballs, sausage, potatoes and vegetables. Steaks and chops can be prepared Campiola—served with thinly sliced potatoes, onions, peppers and mushrooms or Vinegar Pepper—with whole red peppers sautéed with garlic, white wine, and vinegar—for an additional $5. A new summer menu is expected to be introduced in May or June. Riverhouse is also open for lunch Monday through Friday from 12 noon until dinner starts at 5 p.m. DiMeglio suggested the Cavatelli Pasta with Hot Sausage and Broccoli Rabe special which is available for lunch or dinner. There are individual 12” thin gourmet pizzas for $8 to $11. Salads include interesting combinations like the Tonno Salad

($10), made with tuna and white kidney beans, red onion and basil served over arugula with balsamic vinegar dressing, and Warm Chicken Salad ($12), mixed greens topped with grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, shitake and Portobello mushrooms with a balsamic vinegar dressing. Burgers ($7), steak sandwiches ($12), plus less ordinary sandwiches like Grilled Vegetables and Ricotta Salata (sliced ricotta), priced at $10, and Hot Sausage and Broccoli Rabe ($9) also have a place on the menu as do pasta dishes and entrées from the dinner menu priced from $8 to $15. The highest figure is for the highly-recommended Steak Paillard, pounded sirloin steak with garlic and rosemary topped with arugula. There are also daily specials, including a catch of the day.

Easter menu, hours and parking Riverhouse Restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 12 noon to 10 p.m., Friday from 12 noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. This month or next this fine Italian eatery will begin opening at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. On Easter Sunday, April 20, Riverhouse will be taking reservations from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be offering a limited menu which will include some holiday specials like roasted leg of lamb or rack of lamb. Parking is in the large lot adjacent to the restaurant or on the street. There is valet parking in the lot on Friday and Saturday nights or when a party is going on.
