Acuario 2 Cevicheria y mas: Peruvian comfort food in a fishy setting #

By Jananne Abel

I

t was somewhat of a mystery when the name Acuario appeared in the window at 163 North Main St., the former location of Hakata Japanese restaurant. That was also the name of the casual Peruvian eatery around the corner from my office on Broad Street. How could that be? As it turns out, the Oshiro family of Port Chester owns both restaurants and may continue to operate them as a pair. However, renewal of the lease at 137 Irving Ave. was uncertain which led to securing the Main Street space when it became available. Saida and Nicholas Oshiro came to Port Chester from the port city of Callao, Peru--near Lima—in 1986 and, already experienced restaurateurs in their native country, opened some of the first Peruvian restaurants in the village. Saida Oshiro founded Acuario #1 in 1990 which was taken over by son Eduardo in 2001 and renovated. His sister Barbara served as waitress and manager. Acuario #2 opened on Valentine’s Day 2007 and is still getting established. In its more visible location with an attractive royal blue awning advertising the restaurant as a “cevicheria y mas” in white letters, it should catch on before long. While Eduardo, 32, said the new eatery has “kind of branched

out towards me,” it is very much a family business with involvement by his mother, sister Barbara, 30, and brother-in-law Oscar Vega. Eduardo’s wife, Beth Canas, also works at the restaurant. Eduardo, who is of Japanese descent, said he used to eat regularly at Hakata and therefore knew when the Japanese restaurant was closing and the space would once again be available for lease. It took 6 ½ months to renovate the location into Acuario Restaurant as you see it today. Acuario means “aquarium” in English, and you can’t help but be struck by its eight fish tanks of various shapes and sizes full of gorgeous tropical fish and other aquatic plants and animals popping up all over. Pay special attention to the one right inside the front door which is spectacular. And, if that weren’t enough, take note of the 16 fish bowls on the walls on both sides of the long hallway leading to the bathrooms. The spacious restaurant seats about 60 people at orange and

Beth Canas arranges fresh flowers in the tiny vases that sit on the tables at Acuario on North Main Street, the newest Peruvian restaurant in Port Chester. black booths and wooden shellacked tables set with small candles and tiny vases filled with daisies—white one day, pink and yellow another. The floor is light wood and the tall tin ceiling has been painted a slate blue. Similar to Acuario #1, walls are sponge-painted orange on top with dark wood-stained paneling on the bottom. A wooden divider topped by misty glass in which “Acuario” stands out in clear lettering separates the dining room from the simple bar where six comfortable stools can be pulled up. A few other tall tables with stools also figure in this area. Acuario has not yet received its liquor license, so for the moment patrons can bring their own beer, wine or hard liquor. I didn’t notice anyone taking advantage of

that fleeting benefit on my recent Sunday night visit, but Eduardo assured me that you can. He expects the license in about a month. The menu at this new incarnation of Acuario is similar to that at the old one. Eduardo described the offerings as “typical Peruvian comfort food.” So far I’ve only eaten at the North Main Street location once but found the surroundings pleasant, the service good, the food nicely presented and pleasing to the palate and the prices reasonable. The focus here is on ceviche and seafood, but several meat and chicken dishes also appear on the good-sized menu as well as a handful of salads (Peruvian chicken salad and grilled shrimp salad sound interesting). Eduardo Oshiro and Mexican-born Eduardo Cardosa of Port Chester share the cooking responsibilities. Aside from the busboy, everyone speaks English, so there’s no problem with communication. Eduardo came to Port Chester when he was 11 and graduated from Port Chester High School. His wife’s English is impeccable. Sister Barbara also speaks perfect English and her husband Oscar is comfortable with the language. Our waitress spoke English more haltingly, but that did not detract from her efficient service.

Dinner for three

A section of the dining room at Acuario showing a few of its many fish tanks.

We didn’t bring wine since we didn’t know Acuario was still waiting for a liquor license when my party of three ate dinner at Acuario the last Sunday in March. So we stuck with water although other non-alcoholic drinks are available—soda, juices, sparkling water and chicha (the Peruvian corn drink). Our waitress brought a bas-

ket of French bread to the table along with a small dish of green salsa made with jalapeno peppers blended to the perfect spiciness for dipping or spreading on the bread. It can also be added to any dish to heat it up as desired. Since Acuario is billed as a “cevicheria,” we couldn’t eat there without sampling at least one. Five varieties of this marinated seafood specialty appeared on the menu less than a week ago, but that number has since increased to nine due to the warmer weather and business picking up. The newer ones include octopus and three varieties of sashimi. Eduardo suggested the pescado or fresh fish ceviche or the mixed seafood variety. I chose the Ceviche de Camarones ($9), which brought five good-sized cold shrimp marinated in a medium-spicy mixture of lemon juice, cilantro and spices nicely arranged on a plate with mesclun leaves, boiled potato, a slice of Peruvian corn, cancha (crunchy corn nuts) and yams. Exceptional! On the restaurant’s brand new menu, this dish now comes in two sizes priced at $10 and $15. My daughter’s choice of entrée was no surprise. She went for her favorite Peruvian dish—Saltado de Pollo ($9 then but $10 on the new menu). It consists of chunks of chicken sautéed with tomatoes and onions and served over French fries with a side of rice. Tallarines Saltados de Mariscos ($14, but $16 on the new menu) is a dish that demonstrates the Oriental influence in Peruvian cooking. In fact, it is billed as assorted seafood lo mein with a touch of Peruvian flavor. Shrimp, large mussels, calamari, crab, octopus, peppers, celery and onions are mixed with lo mein noodles in a beautifully Please turn to page 7R

The newest of two Acuario restaurants in Port Chester—both owned by the Oshiro family—is located at 163 North Main St.

Acuario #2 Cevicheria y mas: Peruvian comfort food in a fishy setting Continued from page 5R presented plate perfect for seafood lovers. With the generous amount of seafood involved in this dish, the price increase is certainly warranted. Soup at Peruvian and other South American restaurants suffices as a meal. Sopa a la Minuta ($9), homemade beef noodle soup (also served in a chicken variety), was no exception. Milk is added to the beef broth as well as noodles, onions and tomatoes for a delightfully warming concoction I spread over three meals before it was finished. For now, desserts are not homemade except crema volteada, a type of flan. That wasn’t one of the choices the night we visited. Tira misu, cheesecake and alfajore ($1.50), a typical buttery Peruvian cookie filled with dulce de leche and sprinkled with powdered sugar were the options. Two of the delicious cookies ($3) topped off our meal along with two coffees. The tab totaled $51.00 without tip. Additional homemade desserts are planned in the future, Eduardo said.

Specials, recommendations, lunch

Besides the nine types of ceviche, Eduardo recommended the Chicharron de Calamar ($9) appetizer (fried calamari with fried yucca and Peruvian onion salad). For main course, he suggested Jalea Personal ($17), deep fried seafood platter of fish, crab, mussels, calamari and

shrimp served with onion salad. A larger version costs $25. About five specials appear on a blackboard out front at dinnertime. Recent examples: fried red snapper and grilled shell steak as well as Tiradito de Pescado, a type of sashimi, for appetizer. The latter is featured on the new menu. For lunch, served from noon to 4 p.m., pre-made specials listed on a blackboard on a recent weekday were Sopa de Pollo, Salmon a la Parilla, Bistek Encebollado con arroz y pallares and Chaufa Mariscos (seafood fried rice with vegetables). A few others are made to order. The regular lunch menu ($8-$10) lists 14 entrÊes which are served with soup or salad and soda. Many of these same dishes—i.e. Milanesa de Pollo o Carne ($9), Pescado Sudado (catch of the day cooked with onions and peppers seasoned with fresh spices and herbs at $9) and Camarones Saltados (shrimp sautÊed with onions and tomatoes served with fries and rice at $10) appear on the dinner menu at higher prices.

Hours, parking, etc.

Acuario is open from 12 noon to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday and Thursday, from noon till 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed Wednesday. Parking is on North Main Street or in the lot around the corner on Highland Street.
