Rue Des Crepes Crepes galore and more in a Parisian setting
O
left with the feeling that the Planning Commission “didn’t want me to put it there because Rye has too many restaurants.” However, they chased her away with excuses of too much traffic and too much trash. “After eight months of appealing, I threw in the towel and moved to the next town,” she said, opening Rue Des Crepes on Mar. 30, 2008. “It’s cute and quaint and has a lot of potential.” “I wanted to open up something that was family friendly and a little different,” said Diaz.
By Jananne Abel
nce in a while I do eat outside of Port Chester and Rye Brook, and I know our readers do, too. So when I learn of a place out of town that has local ties, I figure it’s fair game for this dining guide. Such is the case with Rue Des Crepes in Harrison, which is owned by Blind Brook High School graduate Denise Diaz. Diaz, 28, said she “found it a little bizarre there weren’t any restaurants in Westchester County that dedicated themselves to providing this type of food. I enjoy crepes, so I thought it would be kind of fun to open a cool little place.” Unlike most of her fellow BBHS graduates who went on to college, Diaz joined the military after graduation and spent two years as an army medic. “I was kind of done with school,” she said, admitting that she did it “to be rebellious.” Until 9/11, she worked for two years at a .com company in Manhattan where she had a view of the Twin Towers. Then she decided to go back to what she knew, having worked in delis and pizzerias when she was younger, and bought a deli. She also got a lease at the Skating Academy in Elmsford to open a café which she’s operated for six years. “I didn’t want to work for anyone else,” she said. Diaz used this experience as a catalyst to open a restaurant. In the summers she did food service for country clubs like Bailiwick in Greenwich to earn enough money to be able to construct the new eatery. “Thankfully I’m not doing that anymore,” she said. “It was a little stressful.” Denise said her mother Madeleine is an amazing cook who would always make crepes on Sunday. She named the most popular dessert crepe on her
menu—topped with warm guava purée, kiwis, bananas and strawberries—for her mom. Her mom and dad Alvaro still live in the Talcott Woods development in Rye Brook where she grew up. A lover of crepes and almost everything French, Rue Des Crepes is right up my alley—from the unique décor, to the delicately thin pancakes and other interesting menu items. It’s not inexpensive except for the brunch which is reasonable at the current $15 and also at the $17 it will be up to by the time you visit. But, then again, where else can you get dinner and dessert crepes, crepe rolls, crepe crisps and crepe quiche in Westchester? Or avocado fries for that matter? There’s an emphasis on healthier and low-fat ingredients in the crepes and all the menu items which is another plus.
Unique French decor
Another Blind Brook graduate, Shara Shisheboran, and former Rye Brook resident Linda Karanikolas designed Rue Des Crepes, turning a former deli and some empty spaces behind it at 261 Halstead Ave. into a cobblestone street and a Parisian courtyard. “They did a tremendous job,” said Diaz. “I gave them two sentences and that’s what they created.” They used faux painting to make concrete look like cobblestones along a narrow pathway complete with an ornate gate, garbage cans, a cat and a Métro

Another 12 can sit at small round tables along one wall in the front of the restaurant where the crepes are cooked on three round griddles in front of the window. Seated in the courtyard, patrons have a great view of a variety of shops with faux fronts—a droguerie, Boulangerie de Petits Gateaux, Madelene’s Boutique de Corset and a cremerie. There’s also the Cinéma Paradis and another boulangerie stocked with bread and other baked goodies whose doors swing open to the restaurant’s kitchen. A lamppost bearing French street signs is positioned within the courtyard and beyond it is painted a streetscape with residences and other more distant

storefronts—all very quaint and picturesque.
Diaz created the menu but has four different cooks to prepare the food while she takes care of running the restaurant. The menu will be changing next week but will only be about 20% different, said the proprietor. “We are taking off a few things and adding a dozen things,” she said. “Being open a year we got to see what there also is a demand for.” She’s making the menu more kid friendly and adding some crepes for regulars who have tried everything. Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Diaz said so far Sunday brunches are the restaurant’s bread and butter. Reservations are a must.
Rue Des Crepes is located at 261 Halstead Ave. in Harrison. I didn’t witness it myself, but Diaz said the design team drilled 2,000 holes in the ceiling and installed fiberoptic lights which at nighttime convey the look of a starlit sky. Chairs are rattan with red and white woven backs and seats while table tops are decoupaged using authentic old French newspapers and magazines. “That is the beauty of eBay,” said Diaz, where she found the publications. She also bought items from restaurants that were closing. Even the bathrooms are unique, with the ladies’ room being Toulouse Lautrec-inspired. Originally planning to open her restaurant in Rye where she now lives, Diaz gave up after eight months. She was
The biggest sellers on the brunch menu are the French crepe toast with maple syrup and crème brulée sauce and the ham and cheese crepe quiche where buckwheat crepes are used as the mold instead of pie crust. “We have three sections to choose from with four selections in each,” said Diaz. There are six crepes, three quiches and a build your own omelet section. There are also appetizers and salads to choose from. For $15 (soon $17) you get a choice of champagne or mimosa, coffee or tea and a choice of quiche with salad, crepe with fruit salad made with exotic fruits or build your own omelet with chicken apple sausage or double smoked bacon. Rue Des Crepes: Crepes galore and more in a Parisian setting Continued from page 4R As mentioned earlier, the Madeleine ($9) is the most popular dessert crepe (they are made with white flour) followed by fresh mixed blueberries, raspberries and strawberries with a sweet fat free vanilla crème ($8) (I had this and can recommend it) and the banana Nutella (fresh bananas and Nutella spread at $7). The new menu will add a lot of dulce de leche. It also renames The Sidewalk crepe ($6) The Natalie after a little girl who has been coming in from day one who always orders it—butter, sugar and lemon. It is my favorite and, as the menu describes, “a touch of Paris.” In France I’ve always had this crepe without the lemon, but it does add a nice pizzazz. The new menu also renames the Deanna dessert crepe the Maggie ($9), after the head waitress who has been at the restaurant from the beginning and “embodies what I want my service to
be,” said Diaz, calling her “a genuinely kind person who really cares about how you’re doing.” This crepe is filled with chopped fruit salad with finely chopped walnuts drizzled with raspberry sauce. Besides dessert crepes, you can get savory crepes made with buckwheat flour such as Turkey et Brie ($10), which one in our party on a recent visit found disappointing, Hummus et Roasted Veggies ($10), which went over well with another party, Jambon et Fromage (smoked ham and Vermont cheddar at $10), Chorizo, Black Bean and Plantain ($10), Herbed Chicken served with roasted peppers, mozzarella and basil ($10), Merguez Sausage ($10)—spicy Moroccan sausage, white beans and roasted garlic—or other vegetarian crepes ($10) such as Wild Mushroom served with sautéed shallots, tarragon and white wine and Goat Cheese et Leek served with onions.
Besides crepes, you can get appetizers such as crepe crisps ($4) which are baked, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and served with vanilla cream or baked, sprinkled with parmesan and cracked pepper and served with choice of homemade spread, or crepe rolls ($8.95), like a spring roll and coming in three varieties. Pot o’ Fries ($5 or $10) consists of plain potato fries with a choice of homemade dipping sauce or, for $1 extra, choose from garlic parsley, BBQ, parmesan or spicy Cajun fries with dipping sauce. For the fun of it, we tried the avocado fries ($8), four good-sized avocado wedges dipped in a tasty batter, lightly fried so the center is soft, and served with a yummy Mexican tomato sauce. I had a bowl of the delicious five onion soup ($6), made with purée of potato and five different onions, a creamy and

delicious concoction nothing like the traditional French onion soup. It was served with the tasty, crispy crepe crisps. There are also a variety of salads. I had the Rue House Salad ($13), made with romaine, avocado, onions, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, grilled shrimp and crepe crisps served with a very thick low fat Paris yogurt dressing having a slight taste of curry. The salad was great but the thickness of the dressing made it difficult to eat. Diaz says she always recommends the sesame ginger dressing with this salad, but that’s not what it comes with if you don’t know better. Other dressing choices are oil and vinegar, honey mustard, light Italian, balsamic vinegar, bleu cheese and oriental sesame peanut. Some other salad choices: Mediterranean ($9), Classic Caesar ($8), Cobb ($9), Grilled Vegetable ($11) and Grilled Thai Chicken ($110 and Field Greens with walnuts, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and sprouts with balsamic vinaigrette ($8). A selection of mini sandwiches allows you to order three for $12 as a meal. One in our party had the curry chicken salad on a mini croissant with dried cranberries, toasted almonds and romaine, tuna salad on brioche and roasted turkey with fontina, roasted peppers and basil on a whole wheat ciabatta roll. She enjoyed the latter the most. Besides the tuna, none were overstuffed. In addition to crepes, a case out front displays a number of scrumptiouslooking desserts like Lemon Charlotte Royal, Black and White Decadence (made with chocolate and vanilla mousse), chocolate velvet boules and pecan tarts ($5), as well as linzer heart, butter walnut and lemon drop cookies (75 cents each) and raspberry and dark chocolate truffles ($1 each). Drinks such as homemade strawberry lemonade made with real strawberry purée ($3.50 for a small glass) and root beer floats set this restaurant apart. You can also get soda, coffee, tea, cappuccino, regular lemonade and water. The wine list continues the concept of “giving people something they can’t easily get somewhere else,” said Diaz. It includes a lot of Malvec Spanish wines which she said are big this year, chiantis and chenin blancs as well as chardonnays and pinot grigios for the less adventurous. “We even have Duvel and Blue Point blueberry beer,” said Diaz. Our bill for four with the onion soup, field green salad, avocado fries, house salad, hummus crepe, turkey et brie crepe, a butter, sugar and lemon crepe, fresh fruit crepe, two pink lemonades, a coffee and a root beer came to $99.86 without tip. Our service was perfectly fine without being doting. On a return visit to take photos, I learned that Mike Caputo of Port Chester, a former Westmore News employee, Port Chester High School graduate and Fordham senior, works there as a waiter.
Hours and such
So far business has been “up and down evenly,” said Diaz. “It’s either tumbleweeds or we fill up every table. As the weather gets nicer, we get busier.” During the week there is a ladies’ lunch crowd and Friday and Saturday nights a big dessert crowd from other restaurants or the movies. She does a baby shower or bridal shower about every weekend. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends to accommodate the late dinner crowd. Parking is on the street. Diaz, who has been to France once and studied French at Blind Brook High School with Joan Mele, was surprised to learn that French is being phased out in the Blind Brook school district. “Wow! I think it’s a shame,” she said.
