RESTAURANT REVIEW
Per Voi II brings back old players in a contemporary new setting P
BY JANANNE ABEL
er Voi is back on Port Chester’s North Main Street with many of its former players and a whole new contemporary look. It’s classy, fun, and the Northern Italian cuisine is exceptional. Now called Per Voi II, this new incarnation of the former restaurant at 23 North Main St. features Joe Fornino of Yonkers and Justin Cartisano of Rye Brook as co-managers. Manuel Romero of Port Chester has also returned as the head chef, and two of the former waiters are back. In addition, there’s a whole new cast of characters. Fornino was one of the partners in the original Per Voi that helped revitalize a downtrodden downtown back in 1993, years before Costco, the movie theaters or any of the Waterfront at Port Chester complex was dreamed of. Cartisano joined Per Voi as a waiter and bartender in 1999, and when he left along with Fornino in November 2006, he was in charge of the dining room. These two good-looking, personable gentlemen, Fornino now almost 69 and Cartisano 34, are the faces of Per Voi II, with one or both of them on the premises greeting customers and making them feel welcome at all times. “I think it’s the only way it’s going to work,” Fornino said. “People come to see us.” They’ve got that chemistry.
Both of them are glad to be back. Justin went into the nightclub business in Stamford which, he said, didn’t really work out. He was waiting tables at Gabriele’s Italian Steakhouse in Greenwich when “I realized I missed what we had over here.” “People wanted us to come back and wanted us to manage it,” Fornino said. The restaurant is now owned by a corporation, the principals of which prefer to remain behind the scenes. “It’s like coming home,” Fornino said. “People have been coming here for so many years they become like family.” Many of their old customers have returned as well, first learning the reincarnated restaurant was open by word of mouth. Opening quietly on Sunday, Mar. 4, Per Voi II was packed the following Saturday when my party stopped in for a drink after the Midtown Men benefit concert at Port Chester High School. It was pleasant going to a local restaurant and seeing many people we knew.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Per Voi II brings back old players in a contemporary new setting a sprig of mint and designs in chocolate sauce on the side. There was also whipped cream on top accented with chocolate shavings. This variety as well as banana cream pie are made especially for Per Voi II. The chocolate pie was creamy and light although not as chocolatey as I would have liked. We capped off our meal with a cappuccino complete with rock candy on a stick and an espresso, both $5. Service was attentive without being hovering. Joe Fornino made his presence known and visited all the tables. Our check came to $114.89.

Specialties/Menus/ Specials
Since the head chef and most of the kitchen staff from the original Per Voi have returned, it’s not surprising that the wonderful Northern Italian cuisine is as delicious as it always was. The menu this time around is more compact, but there are also 6-8 daily specials. “Chicken Martini is our specialty dish,” said Fornino. It was carried over from the old days and is on the menu. Another specialty is butterflied branzino encrusted with fresh herbs in a white wine sauce. A third is a 16-ounce long bone veal chop. Examples of some specials are roasted corn chowder, Clams Per Voi (chopped clams and shrimp, mozzarella and seasoned bread crumbs with lemon garlic sauce), rigatoni stuffed with broccoli rabe and sausage in a pink sauce and Veal Osso Bucco with carrots and onions in a tomato herb sauce. The regular menu includes appetizers in the $10-14 range, salads for $8-12 including cold seafood salad which was a hit from the old days, pasta such as Penne Christopher (sausage in a pink tomato sauce) or Linguini Marechiara (shrimp, mussels and clams in a fresh basil red sauce) from $16-21, chicken dishes at $19-20, veal dishes such as Capri (breaded veal cutlet topped with chilled tomatoes, red onions and olives, diced fresh mozzarella, basil, lemon and olive oil dressing) or Fungi (sautéed with wild mushrooms in a brandy sage sauce) at $24-26, fish such as Shrimp Scampi or Sole Meuniere from $22-24 and grilled meats from $21 for grilled pork chops with hot and sweet cherry peppers to $32 for filet mignon Per Voi
Hours, parking, entertainment
The Abendroth Avenue side of Per Voi II is the restaurant’s main entrance. A new deck and façade are planned here. (with melted gorgonzola cheese and broccoli rabe). As stated on the menu, the chef is willing to cook up dishes that are not listed, so don’t be afraid to inquire if you have something in mind, and he’ll do his best to prepare it for you. For Easter, from 1-7 p.m. a limited a la carte menu will be offered plus specials such as leg of lamb and others that were being developed at press time. A children’s menu will also be available. The lunch menu, offered Monday through Friday, is the same as the dinner menu except priced at $12-14 for most entrées, $16 for fish, said Fornino. There will also be inserts for personal pizzas at $9 and $10 and burgers with fries at $9. Cartisano developed the wine list which features Italian and California reds and whites plus Champagne, Prosecco and sparkling wines from $30-210. The Cabernets range from the Silver Palm for $38 to the Jordan which Justin says is a great deal for $95. The house wines cost $8 per

glass except the Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc which go for $10. The standard dessert menu includes raspberry almond cheesecake, tira misu, Italian cheesecake, deep fried cheesecake and Belgian waffles Per Voi, the latter made on the premises. In addition, a pastry chef comes in weekly and makes vanilla cinnamon bread pudding, milk chocolate peanut butter tart and apple crumb tart. Another baker makes cream pies for Per Voi II.
Dinner for two
Our dinner for two started with a small cold antipasto consisting of tomato and fresh mozzarella, grilled zucchini, mushrooms, hot green pepper, hard parmesan, chick peas, Italian kidney beans and roasted red peppers in oil plus a slice of sopressata. I’m not going to guarantee that all customers will get this antipasto every time, but it was a nice introductory gesture on the part of the management. A basket of bread sticks, Terranova bread and a crispy flat bread topped with hot peppers (yummy if you like a little spice in your life) was served with frozen butter, not uncommon but always a little irritating. To go with our meal, we chose one of the least expensive wines on the list, the Kris 2010 Delle Venezie Pinot Grigio at $30. Served nice and cold, it was crisp, clean, smooth and dry, just the way I like it. The Baked Clams Gabriella ($10), fresh clams topped with oregano seasoned bread crumbs and white wine, brought six savory, light clams in the shell. The Tri Colore Salad ($9) blended radicchio, arugula and endive plus black olives and tomatoes with house dressing. We ordered it topped with gorgonzola cheese. It was a large portion, a little bitter because of the endive.
We were extremely pleased with both entrées. The Tilapia Oreganata ($22) brought two pieces of delicate white fish topped with seasoned bread crumbs cooked in white wine and lemon. The tart taste of lemon against the delicate taste of the coated fish made for a delightful combination. Creamy mashed potatoes and string beans were the perfect sides. Not realizing until afterward that Chicken Martini ($20) is the house specialty, it nonetheless lived up to its reputation. Three thin pieces of chicken breast were coated in Japanese bread crumbs, parmesan cheese and sautéed in lemon wine sauce with chopped cherry peppers to give it just a little zing. It was also served with mashed potatoes and string beans. After our meal, we received four baby biscotti on a plate and then went with the chocolate cream pie ($6) served with two dollops of whipped cream,
The dining room at Per Voi II is open Monday through Thursday from 12 noon to 10 p.m., Friday from 12 noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. The bar stays open as late as there are customers. Parking is on the street or in the marina parking lot on the Abendroth Avenue side of the restaurant. Valet parking is offered on Friday and Saturday nights. Fornino thinks it makes sense for downtown restaurants to get together and hire one valet parking service, which has been discussed by village officials. He also thinks it would benefit all of Port Chester to build a 3-level parking garage downtown “even if we had to pay toward it.” He said people from Port Chester know where to park downtown but those from out of town aren’t willing to deal with the lack of convenient parking. Maybe down the road Per Voi II will offer entertainment such as a deejay or oldies groups.
Per Voi II is located at 23 North Main St., the restaurant’s alternate entrance.
