RESTAURANT REVIEW
Frank’s is back Expanded menu and a whole new look
E
By Jananne Abel
ight months to the day after the devastating fire at Frank’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Port Chester, the 23-year-old eatery reopened with an expanded menu and a whole new look. Only the magenta awnings with white lettering that surrounded the building remain the same. Choosing not to hold a grand opening but to let business gradually build up so as not to overwhelm the staff or disappoint customers, the owners can now say, three months after reopening on May 18, that business is really starting to pick up. After getting over the initial shock of the Sept. 18, 2004 electrical fire that destroyed the interior of their popular restaurant at 23 Putnam Ave., brothers Frank and Robert “Bobby” Blasi, ages 45 (in September) and 41 respectively, reconciled to turn something bad into something good. They used the catastrophe as an opportunity to update the interior and come up with ways to improve the restaurant and give better service, said Bobby, acting as spokesperson while Frank was on vacation. The newly designed Frank’s features a much larger white tile and stainless steel kitchen open for all to see, two revolving pizza ovens that allow the restaurant to crank out 100 pies in a half hour, a new entrance off the parking lot rather than the front of the restaurant, a long counter for ordering takeout with the menu posted above it in large type and many types of pizza and other offerings on display, and one attractive dining room rather than a self-serve pizza section as well as a dining room with table service. The single dining room, which seats about 60, makes more efficient use of space than the old arrangement, said Bobby. “People say how nice and big and roomy it looks,” he said. Only at lunchtime are patrons allowed to order pizza at the
counter and sit down with it. At night only table service is permitted in the dining room. Bobby said the new arrangement has generated mostly positive comments, “the dining room is definitely more inviting” so more people are dining in rather than taking out and younger teens are now coming in for dinner. The menu has been expanded so at night you can get pizza, a wrap or a sandwich as well as salads, pasta, meat or seafood entrées. Frank’s has always been known for delivery, but since the fire people have been curious to see what the new place looks like, said Bobby, and have been impressed. “They thought we were just a pizza joint.” The renovation cost more than half a million dollars, all of which was covered by insurance. Frank oversaw the construction and he and his father Luigi, a retired carpenter, did some of the work along with cousin Gino Anfuso of Rye, a chef for two months before the fire whom they wanted to remain in their employ once renovations were complete. Glad to get back in the kitchen, Anfuso is now the head chef assisted by Emmanuel Soto of Port Chester. While Frank no longer cooks, he still oversees the entire kitchen operation to make sure dishes come out the way he likes them, said his brother.
Décor and prices The outside of the restaurant boasts eye-catching stonework on the bottom of the building and beige stucco on top. Large planters and urns filled with flowers also spruce up the exterior and invite customers to come inside. Bobby said his wife created the interior earth tone color scheme. Walls are caramel colored on top with a brown-stained wooden chair rail in the middle and copper colored paint on the bottom. The floor is ceramic tile in various gradations of brown. Tables for two, which can be pushed together to create any even number combination, are dark wood with a lighter grain in the middle. Chairs have dark wooden backs and legs with thin striped brown and beige seats. Pleated shades hang at the windows with valances above them in rust and brown on a beige background. Dim lighting is provided by modern metal fixtures on the walls, small round lights in the ceiling and globed candles on the tables. With the fixtures, there’s not much room for other wall art. Only one black-framed Isolabella poster featuring a design of wine bottles hangs on the far wall of the restaurant. There are no tablecloths, and that is on purpose, said Bobby. “Our whole thing was for people to be able to come to a restaurant where there is more casual dining,” he said. “We just wanted an upscale pizza parlor.” “Prices are still moderate,” said Bobby. “We didn’t really raise our prices.” However, he added that the prices of pizza went up a little because of the increase in the cost of cheese and eggs. And in fact I’ve heard complaints around town about the cost of Frank’s pizza ($6.95 for a 10” personal cheese pizza, $12.95 for a 16” 8-slice cheese pie, $14.95 for a 20-inch, 10-slice version) compared to that at other local restaurants. Nonetheless, their pizza business is still booming, with takeout orders big, especially on Friday nights, and

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Frank’s is back Continued from page 3R reconstruction since the fire, Bobby was in charge of ordering equipment and furniture and reworking the menu with the help of chef Gino. The large menu includes a full range of appetizers, soups, burgers, specialty salads, pasta, grilled meats, ravioli, wraps, chicken, veal, seafood and eggplant dishes, pizza, cold, club and hot sandwiches and wraps as well as homemade desserts. Some of the new items on the menu were dishes Bobby’s wife Danielle made for him while the restaurant was closed, such as the Baked Shrimp Primavera ($15.95 for dinner, $11.95 for lunch) and the Amore Chicken (grilled chicken topped with fresh spinach, sliced Portobello mushrooms and imported provolone and baked in the oven priced at $15.95 for dinner, $11.95 for lunch). A few more salads were added including the South Beach Salad ($10.50), made with iceberg and romaine lettuce tossed with grilled chicken, cucumbers, glazed walnuts, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, green apples and gorgonzola tossed with balsamic vinaigrette, and Crispy Calamari ($8.95). There are also many more wraps—now a total of 16—and gourmet pizza combinations, now totaling 30, as well as the traditional thin crust pizza with a choice of 40 different toppings and Sicil-

Recommendations Besides the Amore Chicken and Shrimp Primavera, Bobby recommends the Fussili Angelina ($16.95 dinner, $13.95 lunch), chicken tenders, prosciutto, onions and mushrooms in a pink cream sauce, the Filet of Sole Arreganata ($15.95 and $11.95), which is baked and topped with seasoned bread crumbs and white wine and served with rice or pasta, and the Chicken Scarpariello, chicken tenders sautéed with hot and sweet peppers in a brown sauce at $15.95, $12.95 for lunch. “Everything is fresh and made to order,” including all the chicken for salads and sandwiches, which makes it more tender, said Bobby.
Dinner for four On one of my recent visits, our party of four ordered the Baked Shrimp Primavera ($15.95), Pork
Chops Giambotte ($16.95), Crispy Calamari Salad ($8.95) and a child’s portion of Spaghetti and Meatballs ($6). The meal began with a basket of Frank’s famous garlic rolls and a crunchy loaf of Italian bread. Water came with slices of lemon, a nice touch. The adults chose a glass of Pinot Grigio and a glass of Merlot (both $6.50) to accompany the meal. Only the pasta dishes come with a small salad, in this case the spaghetti. You get a nice salad of mixed greens, cucumber and cherry tomatoes served in a small white triangular dish. The shrimp dish includes a good number of crustaceans (I couldn’t easily count them) in a flavored rice with cherry tomatoes, sliced carrots, asparagus, green beans, red and green peppers topped with parmesan and mozzarella cheese and baked golden brown. Although it was a hot night and I thought twice about ordering this entrée, it was delicious, an unusual but tasty combination. The pork chops brought two large chops topped with potatoes, onions, hot and sweet peppers in a white wine and garlic sauce. While the dish was flavorful, it could have used more hot peppers. The salad, crispy calamari rings atop iceberg lettuce flavored with red onions and cherry tomatoes and tossed with balsamic dressing, was light and fresh, perfect for a hot night. The pasta was al dente, the meatballs slightly bland. Portions are large; even the spaghetti was more than my 12year-old, who was also sampling the pork chops, could eat. For dessert, all of which are made on the premises, we selected moist, scrumptious carrot cake with walnuts and a light, creamy frosting ($4.50) which was shared by all and quickly disappeared. We also had the mini cheesecake sampler on the house (normally $6.75), a selection of three small cheesecakes, this time raspberry with a graham cracker crust, lemon and chocolate with chocolate sauce. The other two were drizzled with raspberry sauce. Three cappuccinos ($4.25 each) came served in large wide cups equaling two coffee cups, topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with cinnamon. Our check came to $99.80 without tip. I can also rave about the Chicken Gorgonzola with tomatoes and asparagus ($14.95), a special I had on a previous visit, and the Fussili with Broccoli, Garlic and Oil ($11.95). The former was served with oven roasted potatoes and broccoli. The Scrod with Tomatoes and Basil served with rice and broccoli ($16.95), another special, was also a hit with others in our party. While dinner specials are offered regularly on the weekends, lunch specials have not yet been introduced.
