Restaurant roundup
Restaurants come, go and expand B
By Jananne Abel
esides the new additions in the Waterfront at Port Chester development, quite a few other changes have occurred on the local restaurant scene in recent months. These include an expansion, a closure, and two sales, one of which entails a temporary closure while it undergoes a total renovation.
Frank’s Steaks to open this fall Shortly after I reviewed Eclisse in Rye Brook’s Washington Park Plaza before Mother’s Day in May, I learned that the eatery had closed. Although I asked the executive chef I interviewed for the story to confirm the talk that had been going around town for months that the restaurant was being sold and was going to be transformed into a steakhouse, he said he could neither confirm nor deny those reports. I visited the 275 South Ridge St. location in June and work had just begun to renovate Eclisse and change it into Frank’s Steaks. I happened to run into Ken Denicola there, one of four owners who bought the lease for the restaurant from Par Shakiban. Shakiban owned the restaurant at this location from its beginning when the shopping center was built. He originally opened it as Par’s Steakhouse and later changed the entire concept and food to a family-style Italian eatery. Frank’s Steaks currently has locations in Jericho and Rockville Centre, N.Y., both on Long Island. The Jericho restaurant has been open for 18 years, the eating spot in Rockville Centre for four. Besides Denicola, who will be general manager of the Rye Brook restaurant, owners are Nicholas Droscos, Richard Gerzof and Rocco Trotta, all from Long Island. Denicola has 25 years in the restaurant business, while Droscos and Gerzof have 30. Obviously the specialty at Frank’s Steaks is steak. However, the Rye Brook location will also have a 5-stool sushi bar. “We serve the best steak pos-
sible but are not out to kill you in the pocket,” Denicola said. “If we can do some volume, we can keep costs lower than Frankie & Johnnie’s and The Willett House.” Denicola said the service at Frank’s Steaks is second to none on Long Island, a tradition he intends to continue in Westchester. The atmosphere will be friendly, he said, and families will be welcome. “You come into my restaurant and you’re family right away,” Denicola said. One of the architectural details is expected to remain from Eclisse—the Italian fresco just inside the doorway. Otherwise “we need to have our own look,” Denicola said, displaying a rendering of what the restaurant’s main dining room will look like. “It’s going to be very, very beautiful and there won’t be any better service anywhere close in Westchester.” Besides serving lunch and dinner, the main dining room will be available for parties from 10 to 300, the VIP room for small parties and business seminars and a private room downstairs will accommodate 60 people. The restaurant will be wired to provide internet access for presentations. Denicola said the owners anticipate opening Frank’s Steaks in the middle to the end of October. This week the space looked like it had been pretty much gutted, with some new tile having been installed and plumbing work taking place under the direction of plumbing contractor Glen Brivitzer.
Plumbing contractor Glen Brivitzer, standing on the landing above the gutted atrium dining room at what was Eclisse in Rye Brook’s Washington Park Plaza, holds a rendering of what this main dining room will look like at the new Frank’s Steaks. ping Center stated that the resThe expanded menu continMarini’s Pizzeria taurant would be closed from ues to feature huge sandwiches changes hands May to approximately Aug. 15 of every variety, over-stuffed Marini’s Pizzeria at 46 North for expansion and renovation. combination and specialty Main St., Port ChesThe deli took over the ter, has been sold to store next door which Frank Dattilo, formerly had previously been of Frankie & Louie’s used as the Sportech Restaurant at 414 Wilannex.
