Restaurant Preview
Four new restaurants opening soon By Jananne Abel
P
ort Chester will be welcoming four new restaurants in the near future, three of them within the next month. They range from classy to casual, chains to mom and pops. These four will bring the grand total of eateries in Port Chester and Rye Brook to 124. A completely renovated Tarry Lodge will be opening as an Italian trattoria in early September at 18 Mill St., corner of Abendroth Avenue.
Tarry Lodge 18 Mill Street Port Chester
The most visible and longawaited of the four is Tarry Lodge at 18 Mill St., corner of Abendroth Avenue, which has been closed since the building was damaged by fire in the fall of 2005. After having been gutted and fully renovated, it will open within the first few weeks of September under the same name. A LaBella Electric truck was parked out front this week and ladders were propped up
against the building, now an olive green stucco accented by ornately carved wood painted white around the top and around the numerous evenly-spaced windows. Partners in this new venture are Mario Batali of Manhattan, Joe Bastianich of Greenwich, Nancy Selzer of Brooklyn and Andy Nusser of Hastings-on-Hudson, the same partnership as at Casa Mono and Bar Jamon in the City which focus on tapas and Spanish cooking. Selzer and Nusser will be the managing partners at Tarry Lodge, Nusser the chef.
Raymond’s B&B should be open by the end of the month in the Lyon Park shopping center at 540A Willett Ave.
“We’re both managing partners in both places,” said Selzer this week. “Tarry Lodge will be taking up most of our time for the foreseeable future, but we plan to be at all places at all times.” Nusser started cooking with Batali at Po, his first restaurant in Greenwich Village. They then opened Babbo, Batali’s flagship Italian restaurant in Manhattan, with Bastianich. Batali became a household name when he started appearing on the Food Network. The Casa Mono-Bar Jamon partnership came later. All in all, there are eight New York City restaurants in the Batali group as well as three in Las Vegas and two in Los Angeles, with Bastianich partnering on many of them. The two also own Italian Wine Merchants, an importing company. Tarry Lodge is their first venture into suburbia. While Bastianich, who is currently traveling in Italy, wasn’t available this week for an interview, Selzer said “Joe lives in Greenwich and he wanted a place for him and his neighbors to go and have dinner. Most of the people in Greenwich dine in Port Chester and he feels there’s a place for us there.” Bastianich, whose mother Lidia is also well-known as a restaurateur, cookbook author and host of PBS’s “Lidia’s Italy,” bought the 18 Mill St. building at auction after the fire for $1.378 million. Selzer said his original intent in buying the building was “out of sentimentality because it had been part of Port Chester for so long. Initially he didn’t think he was going to be doing a big elaborate restaurant. I heard plans of a retail outlet.” She said when he bought the building, he didn’t know what
he was going to do with it. Tarry Lodge will be an Italian trattoria serving “simple but beautifully prepared food with the freshest ingredients”—antipasti, house made pasta, Roman-style pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, entrées and house-made desserts, said Selzer. The restaurant will also have an extensive Italian wine list. Some of the meats, such as steak, pork chops and whole roasted chicken, may be offered for two. Bastianich has said the restaurant will be value-driven and family-friendly, a place where people can go all the time as an alternative to eating at home. Examples of menu items will be Asparagus Milanese, Pizza with heirloom tomatoes, burrata and opal basil, Fusilli ala Crazy Bastard made with garlic, roasted cherry tomatoes, beet greens, goat cheese and walnuts, Grilled Guinea Hen with treviso and oranges and The Tarry Lodge Sundae. “We’re keeping the Tarry Lodge name, so you can think of it as a lodge feeling,” said Selzer about the decor. She mentioned hand laid tile floors and lots of wood, giving a turn-of-thecentury feel. “There’s going to be a feeling of Old Worldness, not like a slick new restaurant.” The restaurant, which will seat about 200, was designed by Lisa Eaton, who has done most of the restaurants in the Batali restaurant group. She paired up with Port Chester architect Michiel Boender on this one. There will be two a la carte dining rooms as well as a room with a long bar where you can eat downstairs. On the second floor, another room will be open for a la carte dining along with a large
room for private parties which can be broken into two. The Tarry Lodge name was kept, said Selzer, for sentimental reasons and brand recognition. “It had been such a stalwart for so long that we just decided to keep the name.” Tarry Lodge will initially be open six nights a week but will eventually move to seven days for lunch and dinner. Selzer said the same menu will be in effect for lunch and dinner.
Raymond’s B&B Breakfast & Burgers 540A Willett Avenue Port Chester 939-4444
By the end of this month, Raymond’s B&B—which stands for breakfast and burgers—should be open in the Lyon Park shopping center at 540A Willett Ave. Raymond Cacciatore of Port Chester, who owned the Garden Plaza Restaurant-Diner in Rye Brook’s Washington Park Plaza for 26 years, is opening this new restaurant, which is less than half the size of his old one. He’ll be serving—what else?—breakfast and burgers in the small space that used to house a Laundromat. You’ll be able to get buttermilk or oat bran pancakes with different toppings, omelets, eggs, bacon and sausage. If there’s a big demand, he’ll offer waffles. “Besides the diner, there’s really nowhere to go for breakfast,” said Cacciatore. In addition to 6 oz. top sirloin burgers, he’ll also have turkey and veggie burgers with American, Swiss, cheddar or feta cheese and a couple of salads. Sundaes and shakes will also be on the menu. Four new restaurants opening soon Continued from page 4R Cacciatore plans to be somewhat flexible with his menu. “It all depends on what the customers want,” he said, adding that “I want to do as simple as possible.” “Pretty much I want to try to be a place for people to go— seniors and kids—and just feel comfortable,” said Cacciatore. “A lot of the kids I run into that used to go to my store are excited I’m opening.” Cacciatore is planning to open in two weeks as long as the permits and inspections go well. He will be the only chef at first and will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until he sees where the business is and gets another person cooking. The sign out front lists the Friday and Saturday hours as extending until 10:30 p.m. and Sunday’s hours as 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The décor at Raymond’s B&B is 50s with a red and white checkered tile floor, grey and red Formica tables and counter with matching red chairs. The restaurant seats 19 at tables and the counter. “I’m still waiting for some of the old pictures from the town from the early 1900s,” said Cacciatore. He said he bought some old postcards of Port Chester on the Internet which he is having blown up and the mayor gave him what he had. The restaurant will play 50s music and “what the kids listen to today.” Cacciatore said he’s opening Raymond’s B&B because “once I closed The Garden, there wasn’t anything like it to go get that type of food where there was good quality and the prices were reasonable.” He said he had a vision of opening something on an older scale with this kind of concept for a while. In fact, he dreamt about it and would wake up and draw sketches. “The way I built it is exactly the way my visions were,” he said. Cacciatore did the design himself and hired Joel Greenberg of Mohegan Lake as his architect. He chose this location because he was looking for a smaller store and it’s close to the customers he had before who came largely from Port Chester, Rye Brook and Byram. He said “people in the neighborhood are coming by to take my menu and can’t wait for me to open, so it’s nice.” He finds the neighborhood and the shopping center tenants welcom-
ing and friendly. Although there are only 13 parking spaces in the shopping center’s lot, he said there’s always plenty of parking on the Putnam Avenue hill around the corner.
Aqui Es Santa Fe Café 32 Broad Street Port Chester 914-305-1060
Colombian-born Olga Santos will be fulfilling her dream when she opens Aqui Es Santa Fe Café at 32 Broad St., corner of Irving Avenue, in about two weeks. She immigrated to the United States 10 years ago and lives with her 14-year-old son in Mamaroneck. “When I’m coming here, my dream is to open a little restaurant in Mamaroneck, Larchmont, White Plains or Stamford,” she said, adding that she wants her store to be a Christian coffee shop as well as a restaurant. “It’s my miracle,” she said. “I’m working hard.” Santos has been working as a babysitter in Larchmont up until now, but what she loves to do is cook. She said she had a restaurant in Colombia. Santa Fe Café will serve Colombian food specializing in arepas (Johnnie Cakes), a corn-based bread. They can be served with all kinds of toppings, create a sandwich made with steak, chicken, shrimp, cheese or vegetables or be served on the side. Eggs, soups, salads and natural juice drinks are also on the menu. It’s “all healthy food,” said Santos, adding that the restaurant will serve a good mix of food at a low price. Sante Fe Cafe will be distributing membership cards which give customers one food item or drink free after purchasing seven. The restaurant will be open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., closing earlier on Wednesday and opening and closing earlier on Sunday. The color scheme inside with be the same as it is outside—beige and red. “When everything is ready, the store will be so nice,” said Santos. The restaurant will seat 30 and takeout will also be available. Santos and another chef, who works at Giorgio’s at night, will do the cooking. The other staff will include a manager, her son Carlos and her niece. Santos chose this location, she said, because “the town is a nice town and it is close to the train station.”
Following renovations, the previous location of The Waterfront Grille at 42 Westchester Ave. will be occupied by an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar. locations in Mamaroneck and White Plains, will be opening at the site of the former Waterfront Grille. The location, which will require substantial renovations to turn it into an Applebee’s, is next to the movie theaters in the Waterfront at Port Chester development at 42 Westchester Ave. That’s about all I know at this
Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar
42 Westchester Avenue Port Chester Sometime this fall, an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar, part of the international restaurant chain which has nearby
point. The restaurant chain contacted us a few weeks back about obtaining photographs to hang in their Port Chester location.
