RESTAURANT REVIEW

Arcuri’s Pizza & Salad rejuvenates a longtime downtown pizzeria By Jananne Abel

A

rcuri’s Pizza & Salad co-owners Jamie Arcuri and Rod Aguillon want to make their customers feel at home in their restaurants. They want them to feel like family and friends. “The biggest trick is getting people in the door,” said Arcuri earlier this week about their new Port Chester restaurant at 46 North Main St. “It’s been a pizzeria for so long it gets a little stale after a while.” He feels that once people come in and try the goods, they’ll come back for more. Arcuri’s, which Vincent Arcuri (Jamie’s dad) started as a deli in Old Greenwich in 1971, became a deli and pizzeria in 1984, the first in the area, according to Jamie. In 1994, the Arcuris opened their Cos Cob location at 226 E. Putnam Ave. and named it Arcuri’s Pizza & Salad. By this time, after some experimentation, they had developed a really good balsamic vinegar-based house dressing and decided to concentrate on salads and pizzas. On Mar. 8 of this year, Arcuri and Aguillon replicated that successful Greenwich eatery in Port Chester, opening at the former location of a long line of pizzerias—most recently Il Pizzaiolo and before that Marini’s Pizzeria and Vinny’s Pizza. “I came here in my childhood,” said Arcuri, now 40. “My family is from Port Chester. My dad was born and raised on Franklin Street.” He recalled that when it was Vinny’s Pizza in the 1980s, “this place was really booming.” He’d love to get that momentum back. Going to Vinny’s as a teenager, he remembers it as “a happy place.” Besides the fond memories, “we just really liked the location,” said Arcuri, who lives in Stamford. “With our delivery business, it’s just the perfect location. This store was able to pick up Byram and Glenville and get it there promptly. Customers have been happy with the delivery times.” “Delivery is what we do,” said Arcuri. However, he added that the Port Chester location has been great for takeout because there’s a lot of foot traffic. He’s happy with the hustle and bustle of downtown, the movie theaters and even the new Subway that recently opened across the street. While Arcuri may be the spokesperson and was on-site on a regular basis for the first three months, now Mexican-born Aguillon, 29, is the familiar face behind the counter. And “Roddy,” as Arcuri calls him, provides a warm presence, welcoming his customers and definitely making them

feel at home. The fact that he speaks both English and Spanish fluently doesn’t hurt either. While Arcuri grew up in the food business, helping out at his father’s deli at age 9 and making pizza when he was 12, he is also quick to tell his partner’s story. “In 1995 Rod came to work for me at 15 washing dishes for $5 an hour,” he said. “He worked his way up from dishes, to the grill, up front, made salad, and I taught him how to make pizza. He’s been with me for 15 years. I decided it was time to make him a partner. He definitely earned it.” Arcuri’s has an extensive Italian and deli menu offered at reasonable prices but is known for its hand-tossed pizzas with thin to medium crust, salads (there are 14 varieties) and wraps (hot, cold and burger). The homemade bread, made from pizza dough, is also popular. In Cos Cob, people will come in just for a loaf of bread ($3.50) and a bottle of house dressing, which is sold by the pint at $5.50, said Arcuri. I can attest to the fact that both are delicious. Bread comes with the salads and also with a bowl of homemade soup. For $3.95, you get a choice of 3-4 soups from among six that rotate: minestrone, beef and vegetable, chicken noodle, lentil, tortellini and pasta fagioli. It’s been too hot for soup of late, but my daughter gave the vegetable beef a thumbs up. As far as pizza, the hottest seller right now is the Buffalo chicken pie ($17.95 for a 16”, $12.95 for a 12”). Thin pizza with a thicker crust is topped with spicy chunks of Buffalo chicken, mozzarella cheese, chopped scallions and drizzled with bleu cheese dressing to cool it down. I tried a slice ($3.80) and it’s um, um good! I also tried a variation of “The F.B.,” made with chili, onions and extra cheese. Rather than having it on a double dough crust as listed on the menu, however, I stuck with the standard crust. This 16” pie costs $16.95. The chili is spicy but has little meat and no beans. With the extra cheese, this pie is rich and delicious. Of the salads, I’ve had the antipasto ($7.25 small, $9.25 large), gorgonzola ($6.25 and $7.75), Classic Caesar ($4.95 and $6.75) and Manhattan ($7.25 and $9.25), all of which

Hot and cold sandwiches alike are served with a bag of Ruffles potato chips. Fries cost $1.95 extra. I gave a taco burger wrap ($5.95) a try, one of 12 such burger concoctions on a flour Arcuri’s Pizza & Salad opened in March at or wheat tortilla, and was 46 North Main St. pleasantly surprised. Without the roll, it’s not as filling as a traditional burger. This one included $5.95 for cheese, small (12”) at $8.50 a well-done hamburger with cheddar for cheese and large (16”) at $12.95 cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, black for cheese. Italian décor Painted bright red with green and white accents, Arcuri’s Pizza & Salad wears the colors of the Italian flag on its sleeve. Tablecloths are also bright green and red. Ice cream chairs at the six tables in this storefront pizzeria, seating a total of 24, have black backs and creamcolored seats. Interesting large rust and beige ceramic tiles cover the floor while smaller natural tiles in earth tones compose the counter and backsplash in the restaurant, the tile work left from the pizzeria’s previous incarnation as Il Pizzaiolo. As is typical of pizzerias, the offerings are listed on menu boards in black letters above the counter, the soups of the day scrawled on a smaller blackboard. On the other side of the room, a large screen TV broadcasts baseball or other sporting events.

Hours, parking, etc. Arcuri’s is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Parking is on the street or in the municipal lot around the corner off Adee Street. “Parking is a little tight, but people seem to manage,” said Arcuri. All major credit cards are accepted and there is no minimum. There is a $2 delivery charge with a stated $8 minimum for pizza and $11 minimum for food. However, Arcuri said: “We’re pretty flexible on that.” “So far, so good,” said Arcuri about business. “Every week it seems to get a little better.” The pizzeria has a good number of regular customers and, besides the takeout and delivery, even the tables have been filling up. And the owners haven’t even had their grand opening yet! Arcuri is hoping to have a grand opening celebration in 2-3 weeks, having waited since March to get everything just right.
