Fairways Restaurant at the Griff: A pleasant setting to enjoy all 3 meals BY JANANNE ABEL
B
esides the 40 places to eat outside in Port Chester and Rye Brook, not far up King Street in Greenwich is an especially pleasant location with great American and Italian food at reasonable prices, a wonderful view and exceptional hospitality. That’s Fairways Restaurant at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course, called Fairways at the Griff for short. This golf course, the only public one in Greenwich, is only open to Greenwich residents. The restaurant, however, is open to all.
Lifelong Greenwich residents Mary Ann and husband John Calabro have been leasing the restaurant from the Town of Greenwich and operating it since 2003. Under their current contract, they will continue to run it for another 8 to 10 years. When the Calabros took over the restaurant, they renamed and renovated it to make the eatery their own. The Calabros originated On the Way Café in Rye and ran it from 1991-99, selling it because Mary Ann had an elderly parent who was sick and needed her attention. When she was ready to go back to work again and the contract at the golf course opened up, they bid on it. During the week John works in maintenance for the Town of Greenwich, cooking at the restaurant on the weekends. Breakfasts are his forte. However, he also developed all the recipes for Fairways with the help of his sous chefs Edwin Pinto and Alberto Castro of Stamford. RESTAURANT REVIEW
Fairways Restaurant at the Griff: A pleasant setting to enjoy all 3 meals For lunch, the “phenomenal salads” (there are 15), including pear and beet, salmon and chopped, have been big sellers. Lunch is served every day from 11 a.m. to closing. For dinner, served 5-10 p.m. every day except Monday, Mary Ann said her husband’s homemade lasagna “flies out of here.” Other specialties include Zuppa di Pesce and Mussels and Shrimp Fra Diavolo ($18.95). “Edwin’s fra diavolo sauce is phenomenal,” she said. If you’re not overly hungry, Mary Ann recommends the hot dogs and hamburgers. The latter are 8-ounce fresh angus beef or the stuffed mushroom burger (in the $9 range). The sweet potato fries and spicy chili, her husband’s recipe, are also recommended. And be sure to save room for one of the desserts, all of which are made on the premises. “We put a lot of TLC into our baked goods,” said Mary Ann, adding that they also do unbelievable parties. “You book a party here, we don’t put a clock on it,” she said. “People are amazed at our rules and regulations.” I’ve witnessed two showers taking place under the large awning on the patio while my party dined under umbrellas a short distance away.
Continued from page 5 Service each time we visited was attentive, friendly and professional. The waitresses have largely remained at Fairways at least five years and know most of the regular clientele and what they like to eat and drink, said Mary Ann. Carly Giacomo has been waitressing four years and her boss is grateful she will be staying on after others go back to college because she’ll be attending Westchester Community College, at least for her first year.
Cheery décor
When the weather is not conducive to dining al fresco, the dining room at Fairways is a cozy place to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Consistently good food and service
My first experience at Fairways was this season. At this point I have been there at least once for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and for the most part the food and service have been consistent. For Sunday breakfast, my husband and I ate inside in a cozy setting filled with warmth,

They are set with green paper placemats and decorated with pots of artificial white daisies with yellow centers. The golf course it overlooks is meticulously groomed and beautifully landscaped with sea grasses and red coleus. Large pots of red and white geraniums decorate the patio. The chicken cutlet with red roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette panini ($8.75) was tasty and crunchy, an excellent choice. Pear and beet salad with gorgonzola and balsamic vinegar dressing ($13.95) incorporated sliced black olives, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, three types of greens including frisée and radicchio and was topped with sliced grilled chicken breast. Too much dressing spoiled an otherwise lovely meal. The Balboa ($8.50), which features fresh roast beef, fried onions and provolone on a garlic wedge, was um, um good. A cup of homemade pasta fagioli ($2.50) came in an actual cup. It had a tomato base and a distinct flavor of prosciutto. Along with a rice pudding I didn’t taste but was reportedly creamy and yummy, a couple beers and an iced tea, our check came to $61.70. Sunday dinner for two started under an umbrella but rather quickly moved under the awning when it started to thunder and rain. It was actually romantic with the rain pouring down outside after a white candle surrounded by the green plastic leaves of its holder was added to the table. We enjoyed a half carafe of chardonnay and chose two pasta specialties from the good-sized menu. The Cajun ($16.95) featured sautéed shrimp and chicken, onions and tomatoes in a spicy Cajun cream sauce over linguine ($16.95). Even better was the Fairways Favorite ($13.95), a wonderful combination of farfalle with broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes and kalamata olives tossed in a white wine sauce. Although the menu listed it, I didn’t see any roasted eggplant in this excellent dish. These pasta specialties are served with a house salad ($1 extra for gorgonzola). Portions are good-sized but not more than most people can eat in one sitting.
For dessert, we shared a slice of scrumptious homemade snowball cake, chocolate cake with white cream frosting topped with white coconut. There was whipped cream on the side and chocolate sauce swirled around the plate. With two coffees, served in white mugs bearing the Fairways logo in green, our check amounted to $61.10. A good selection of appetizers, baked pasta, eggplant, chicken, veal and seafood dishes plus steaks and chops fill out the dinner menu. Only wine and beer is served at Fairways. Redwood Creek wine from California (Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and White Zinfandel) is served by the glass ($6), half carafe ($10.95) and full carafe ($19.95). A small selection of reasonably priced red, white and sparkling wines, mostly from California, can be had by the bottle (all in the $20-30 range).
While I’m a fan of outdoor eating, and especially at this location, it’s also pleasurable to dine indoors as the décor is bright and cheery. Pale orange wallpaper with darker veins running through it covers the walls which are filled with a variety of artwork. Three watercolors of the golf course by Guy L. Calabro, a relative, hang on one wall, a painting of daisies on another, and a painting of farmland on yet another. Sliding glass doors look out on the patio. Square shellacked wooden tables and matching chairs with pastel fabric seats—yellow, orange and green—fill the dining room. Two benches along the walls are similar in color. Artificial yellow, white and orange daisies sit in vases on each table. A string of butterflies, a painted stone that reads “Inspire” and photographs of the restaurant adorn the wooden and glass divider between the dining room and the bar. So, whether it’s rainy or sunny, Fairways at the Griff provides an out of the way eating experience on par with that at Doral Arrowwood’s Mulligans just a little farther up King Street.
And this makes 41…
Earlier this month, Frankie & Louie’s erected this outdoor eating area, similar to what they have had in the past, on the sidewalk in front of the 414 Willett Ave. neighborhood Italian eatery, making it the 41st place to dine al fresco in Port Chester and Rye Brook.
