RESTAURANT REVIEW
El Chalan Restaurant offers good Peruvian food at reasonable prices By Jananne Abel
E
l Chalan Restaurant, which opened in Liberty Square in 1987, was probably the first Peruvian restaurant in Port Chester. Now there are eight. And in recent years El Chalan has been the victim of downtown redevelopment, having been uprooted from its longtime home at 59 Westchester Ave. In March 2001 it reopened at 45 Midland Ave., the former location of Piranha, after having been closed almost a year for renovations. El Chalan is a comfortable family restaurant with good food and large portions at reasonable prices. The menu includes all the Peruvian specialties and highlights the Chinese and Italian influences on Peruvian cuisine as well as the extensive use of seafood in this coastal country. Gringos are definitely welcome here. The menu is translated into English and the waitress who served us on two recent visits is helpful and speaks adequate English. Giselly Saenz, 29, one of three owners of this family business, also speaks perfect English, but she only works on Tuesdays. The décor in this long narrow restaurant, which seats 43, is pleasant and simple. Pale pink walls are divided by a wooden chair rail and decorated with triangular mirrors topped by light fixtures. A lighted fish hangs on one wall, a silver and black wall hanging of a man and woman lilting across a dance floor fills another. Tablecloths have a multi-colored fruit pattern. Flags from Mexico, the United States and several Central and South American countries hang over a beautiful wooden bar with a mirrored back and Formica top just off the entrance, indicating that all nationalities are welcome here. A juke box next to the bar allows customers to play their favorite tunes. Chairs hitting the wall have badly marred the paint which needs refreshing. Saenz said she and her mother and sister would like to open up the restaurant to allow more light to come in and that, in fact, they are working on a plan to do just that. Currently there are just two windows at the front of the building that don’t provide much light. Saenz said that was a major drawback of their new location as compared to the old one. In addition, letting people know they’ve
moved has been a hurdle. Business isn’t as good on Midland Avenue, said Saenz, maybe because Liberty Square was closer to modes of mass transportation. It wasn’t far from the train station and was on a bus route. Giselly came to the United States from Lima, Peru with her mother, Aurora Gonzales, and sister, Ana Saenz, now 28, when she was only 6. Her mother had previously visited and liked it here. Her father followed three years later. Aurora, a good cook, opened the restaurant and is still in charge of its operation. Her daughters, who both have jobs elsewhere as administrative assistants, help out as needed. They all live in Stamford. The previous owner of their building in Liberty Square, which Gonzales originally rented and

Menu and specials At El Chalan, which means “man on a dancing horse,” one menu suffices for both lunch and dinner. While there is a list of specialties at the top of the menu, Giselly said she recommends the Jalea Especial (battered fried fish and seafood combination at $20), the Lomo Saltado (minced beef cooked with onions and tomatoes over French fries at $9), the ceviches or seafood cocktails priced at $12 for fish and $13 for shrimp, fish and shrimp or mixed seafood, the Parihuela Especial (special seafood soup at $13), and Saltado de Pescado (fish morsels

She doesn’t feel they were treated particularly well by the village during the relocation process. “They just told us you have to go,” said Saenz.
cooked with onions and tomatoes at $12). Scrod is used for all fish dishes. There are also daily specials listed on a lighted grease board on the wall. A recent special that went over well, something that most Peruvians cook at home, is Talarines Rojas con Carne, as close as you can come to Italian spaghetti with tomato sauce, except this is Peruvian style. The taste is somewhat different and
there are chunks of tomato and beef in the sauce. Arroz con Pollo (chicken with rice), Tallarines Verde (spaghetti topped with a green sauce made with spinach and sweet basil and Milanesa de Pollo (Chicken Milanese) are among other specials offered during the past week.
Dinner for four, lunch for two Not yet having the benefit of Giselly’s recommendations, on a recent Friday night visit, the four in my party chose what sounded good and were not disappointed. We started with Papa a la huancaina ($6) for appetizer, described as potatoes in a creamy Peruvian sauce. With just a slight nip to the creamy yellow sauce, this Peruvian specialty was shared and enjoyed by all. Ceviche mixto ($13), a generous cocktail of shrimp, calamari, octopus, yucca, and onion in a tart lemony sauce, was tasty and filling. Picante de Camarones ($13), described as shrimp in a special Peruvian sauce, definitely had Chinese influence. A good number of shrimp, chunks of tomato, onions, green peppers and lettuce appeared be stir fried for this dish. It was served over French fries. Lenguado al ajo ($12), scrod cooked in a tasty garlic sauce, was an excellent choice, the delicate fish cooked in a slightly sweet tasting sauce and coated to give it a mildly crunchy consistency. Superb! Tallarin Saltado de Pollo ($9) was substituted for the same dish we ordered with beef instead of chicken, probably due to mis-
communication with our sweet waitress, Maria Galeana of Port Chester, but we didn’t send it back. This dish, which consisted of spaghetti topped with pieces of tomato, green peppers and chicken, again displayed an oriental influence. If you care to spice up any dish, a green sauce called aji made with jalapeno peppers is served on a dish with lime slices to each table along with soft rolls and butter in a basket. We were disappointed that there were no tasty desserts to sample. However, that’s not always the case. When she has the time, Aurora Gonzales makes Peruvian delicacies such as flan, rice pudding and mazamorra morada, a pudding made with peaches, apples and prunes. The check came to a reasonable $68 without tip which included two beers, two mixed drinks, one soda and two coffees. Returning for lunch for two a few days later, we had a small size of Sopa de Carne, the soup of the day, priced at $3. This homemade beef soup consisted of chunks of beef, large wide pasta, carrots, peas, celery, onions and parsley in a tasty broth. We also were intrigued to sample Chicharonnes de Pescado ($12), described as crackling fish, which is actually pieces of scrod battered and fried and served with yucca fries, a hefty portion that was plenty for two when combined with the soup. Our lunch, including a soda, came to $16. El Chalan Restaurant is open seven days a week, weekdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
