Restaurant review

A few of my favorite foods T

By Jananne Abel

he song “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music” inspired this column, the second in a series, about some of my favorite foods from Port Chester and Rye Brook restaurants. After more than 10 years of writing reviews and stories about eateries in the two villages (we started this restaurant guide in February 1995), certain foods stick out in my mind that I’ve eaten at various local dining spots. Some I eat often, others I get cravings for from time to time and others I just recall as exceptional from reviews I have done.

Chili fries at Hubba and guacamole at Mary Ann’s Caesar salad at Alba’s and burgers at Sam’s Flan at Kiosko and the pleasure it brings These are a few of my favorite things When the rain falls, when the meetings drag,    when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite foods,    and then I don’t feel so bad.

Stuffed mushrooms For starters, the stuffed mushrooms at Villa Rustica in the Washington Park Plaza at 261 South Ridge St. are scrumptious, maybe the best I’ve ever had. Seven to 10 good-sized mushrooms are stuffed with ground beef, chopped mushrooms, Reggiano cheese and seasoned bread crumbs and baked in the oven. Priced at $8.95, they are flavorful and juicy. Villa Rustica Pizzeria & Trattoria opened in June, taking the place of Garden Plaza Restaurant which had been in that location for 26 years.

Coctel de camarones The coctel de camarones at El Tio Restaurant, a Mexican shrimp cocktail, is nothing short of deli-

chopped onions, tomatoes and cilantro swim in a cool liquid made with shrimp juice, lime juice and a little ketchup. Slices of lime and saltines accompany this starter. Since El Tio is closed on Wednesdays, I wasn’t able to confirm the current prices as of press time. El Tio is located at 143 Westchester Ave., corner of Broad Street.

Wings and Bloody Marys When it opened in June 2006, I found Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar a welcome addition to the local restaurant/bar scene, not only for its 14 flavors of Buffalo wings but also for its delicious Bloody Marys ($7). At Buffalo Wild Wings, the tomato-based drink, garnished with a stalk of celery,

You can’t go wrong with an original margarita straight up with salt and hand-chopped guacamole served in a molcajete with homemade tortilla chips at Mary Ann’s Mexican Restaurant.

moist, with just the right amount of sauce so they’re tasty but not dripping or terribly messy. Of the 14 different sauces to choose from, ranging from mild to blazin’, my favorite is spicy garlic. It is at the same time spicy and tangy and a perfect blend of each. Wings are served with bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks. Wings cost $4.69 for six, $8.39 for 12, $12.49 for 18, $15.49 for 24, $29.99 for 50 and $54.99 for 100. On Tuesdays, wings are discounted to 40 cents each no matter how many you order. Part of a chain, the local Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar is located at 44 Westchester Ave. within the Waterfront at Port Chester retail development.

Guacamole and margaritas

Homemade flan from Kiosko Mexican Restaurant looks as pretty as a picture and tastes great, too.

cious. As an appetizer or even a light lunch, it’s great any time of the year but particularly cooling in the summer. Coctel de camarones comes in two sizes, small and large. The latter is served in a tall ice cream dish topped with chopped avocado. Big chunks of shrimp,

green olives and a large pickle sliver on a stick, is a meal in itself. It has a thick consistency and just the right amount of spiciness. On my last visit, the rim of the glass my Bloody Mary was served in had been dipped in salt. The wings are meaty and

If you like margaritas, those at Mary Ann’s Mexican Restaurant at 275 Boston Post Rd. are excellent and come in a variety of incarnations. My favorite is the house or original lime variety which can be made straight up, on the rocks or frozen, all with or without salt on the rim of the glass. Straight up with salt appeals to my taste buds. Ice waters down the tartness of the drink. The frozen mixture tastes great, but don’t bother with the salt because you need a straw to drink it with and can’t savor the salt through a straw. The margaritas come in a 12-ounce size for $6 or a 16-ounce version for $7.50. There is an extra charge ($8.50 for jumbo) if you choose any of the other flavored margaritas: strawberry, raspberry, mango, peach, black raspberry or Blue Curacao. To go with the margaritas, I recommend Mary Ann’s guacamole,

made to order and hand chopped. Theirs is a chunky rather than a creamy version of this avocado appetizer flavored with tomato, onion and cilantro. It is served in a molcajete or authentic Mexican lava rock mortar used to grind spices and other mixtures with a pestle. A wooden spoon is used for serving in place of the pestle. The guacamole is served with half a lime and a basket of homemade tortilla chips for dipping. Two sizes are available—small for $8.95 and large for $11.95.

Caesar salad made to order Alba’s Ristorante is one of the only places around where you can still get Caesar salad made to order tableside ($18 for two), and it is indeed a treat. Your server grinds anchovies into a paste, adds an egg yolk, oil, vinegar and lemon, tosses

it with romaine lettuce, grates parmesan cheese and grinds pepper into the mixture for a delightfully fresh concoction with a pleasing bite. You can’t get anything more fresh or authentic than that. Alba’s, a fine northern Italian restaurant, is located at 400 North Main St.

Sandwiches and gazpacho I can’t think of any better sandwich filling than the tangy curried chicken salad flavored with mango chutney and peppered with currants at The Kneaded Bread, the trendy bakery at 181 North Main St. It’s sold in a container holding enough salad to make three sandwiches for $6.50. This curry creation goes splendidly on the bakery’s flaky croissants ($2 each). Please turn to page 9R

For lunch or a late night snack, you can’t beat the fries with chili, onions and lots of ketchup at Hubba.

Restaurant review

A few of my favorite foods A close sandwich second also comes from The Kneaded Bread and is only available on Tuesdays (as well as an occasional Saturday). Muenster cheese, sprouts, tomato and honey mustard are surprisingly filling when put between two slices of the bakery’s delicious multi-grain bread. This vegetarian delight costs $6. In the summer, many places make gazpacho, but The Kneaded Bread’s stands out in my mind. Their version ($4) is an extremely flavorful vegetable purée. It comes with a thin slice of toasted French garlic bread floating on top or on the side for takeout orders.

Continued from page 6R

Breads A slice of tasty Buffalo chicken pizza from Il Pizzaiolo Pizzeria & Catering.

The bread that accompanies meals at a few restaurants in town really stands out. The garlic knots at Pizza Pasta & Things in the Kohl’s Shopping Center at 529 Boston Post Rd. and Frank’s Restaurant and Pizzeria at 23 Putnam Ave. and the Italian bread from the Bronx served warm with a crunchy crust at Frankie & Louie’s Restaurant at 414 Willett Ave. are terrific examples.

Amaretto cake

Burger and fries There are lots of places in town to get hamburgers and French fries, but my favorite is Sam’s Bar & Grill on the Byram River Bridge at 1 Mill St. Their half-pound burger ordered medium is juicy and perfectly pink in the middle. I prefer it topped with gorgonzola cheese, and this is one of the few restaurants in town that serves it that way. Sam’s fries are wide, flat and slightly crunchy. When piping hot and sprinkled with a little salt (they come that way), there’s nothing like them. A plain burger and fries costs $6.50. Add a dollar for gorgonzola cheese.

St. which has been a restaurant for about 100 years. Sometimes I do get a craving for them. I always add lots of ketchup which contributes to the taste and moderates the spiciness of the chili. Usually I’m sharing this unhealthy snack with one or two other people in my office and I only get a few bites, but recently I ate an entire small order for lunch and found it

The stuffed mushrooms at Villa Rustica Pizzeria & Trattoria, pictured here with a Tuscan salad, are out of this world.

Fries with chili and onions For lunch or a late night snack, you can’t beat the fries with chili and onions ($3 for a small order, $4 for a large one) at Hubba, located in a tiny storefront space at 24 North Main

perfectly satisfying. With your nose running and your throat burning, Hubba’s red fruit punch ($1 for a small cup, $1.50 for a large one) works wonders to cool you down. Hubba is open until 4 a.m. seven days a week.

‘My Favorite Things’ Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels Doorbells and sleigh bells and snitzel with noodles Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes Silver white winters that melt into springs These are a few of my favorite things When the dog bites, when the bee stings,    when I’m feeling sad I simply remember my favorite things    and then I don’t feel so bad. —From “The Sound of Music”

Pizza and salad Everyone has a different taste in pizza, and while we are blessed with many wonderful pizzerias in Port Chester and Rye Brook, I keep going back to Michael’s Famous Pan Pizza at 125 Midland Ave., across from the Pathmark Shopping Center. Their thin-crusted pan pizza is topped with a tasty tomato sauce and just the right amount of cheese. My favorite toppings are Mexican (chili, jalapeno pepper and onion) and pepperoni (not too greasy). With one topping, a small pie is priced at $6.75. A large pie with one topping goes for $11. Mexican pizza (spicy and flavorsome) costs $8 for a small pie, $13.75 for a large one. Besides the pizza, the house salad at Michael’s is marvelous. A combination of arugula, radicchio, red onion, black olives, cucumber and shaved carrots topped with the heavenly house dressing, a creamy balsamic vinaigrette, and gorgonzola cheese if desired, is enough for two and costs $5.90. If you don’t like too much dressing, you might be wise to order it on the side.

Buffalo chicken pizza I recently discovered the buffalo chicken gourmet pizza at Il Pizzaiolo Pizzeria & Catering at 46 North Main St. in downtown Port Chester. Topped with pieces of spicy Buffalo chicken, mozzarella cheese and bleu cheese dressing, it is exceptional. The pizza is fairly thin-crusted and crunchy. A slice costs $2.75, a large pie $16.10.

Skirt steak Once in a while I actually get cravings for the skirt steak at Inca & Gaucho Restaurant, the upscale South American eatery at 173 Westchester Ave. This long, succulent piece of meat fills the whole plate. While it may taste like it is marinated in something to give it such exceptional flavor, co-owner Eduardo Campos assures me it is not. “It’s how you cook it,” he said, knowing the exact point when the meat is ready to serve, that makes it so juicy. The skirt steak is usually cooked medium unless you ask for it another way. Called entrana in Spanish, this dish is offered in two

sizes: a full steak for $17, a half for $11.50. The smaller size is plenty for one meal; the larger one ensures you’ll have some to take home. The steak is garnished with a few vinegar peppers and comes with salad and fries or rice. My husband introduced me to a delicious steak sandwich at Inca & Gaucho, which is available for lunch or dinner. Sandwich de Lomo ($5.25, $6.75 with fries) features stir fried beef sautéed with onions, tomatoes, wine and soy sauce served on an Italian roll.

Pollo a la brasa Almost everyone loves chicken, and there’s none better than the birds cooked on the rotisserie at Misti Restaurant at 110 North Main St. This style of chicken is called pollo a la brasa in Spanish and this term appears prominently enough on the sign outside Misti that people think it’s the name of the restaurant. Misti’s rotisserie chicken is juicy and infused with taste throughout. The skin, sprinkled with spices, is particularly flavorful. Co-owner Rosa Castillo said Misti’s pollo a la brasa is made using a secret recipe she wouldn’t divulge. Half of a roasted chicken sells for $7, one quarter of a chicken for $5.38. It comes with a better than average salad topped with a yummy dressing, rice or French fries and a basket of dinner rolls.

As far as desserts, my number one choice is the amaretto cake at Piero’s Italian Restaurant at 44 South Regent St. Even if you’re full and think you can’t eat another bite, somehow there’s always room for this light, airy, scrumptious cake. The yellow cake is soaked in almond-flavored liqueur and topped with whipped cream and crushed, toasted almonds. It’s not made on the premises but instead comes from a bakery in the Bronx. Piero’s serves a good-size square of this luscious dessert for $6.

Flan The luscious homemade flan at Kiosko Mexican Restaurant at 220 Westchester Ave. is rich and creamy and topped with caramel syrup. Priced at $4 for a small round serving, it is attractively presented on a plate surrounded by a star design in caramel and chocolate syrup and sliced strawberries with whipped cream on the side.

Shortbread cookies Panera Bread, the bakery-café that opened two years ago in the Waterfront at Port Chester development, has lots of tasty pastries and cookies. The shortbread cookies stand out. Good-sized and buttery (I’m sure they have loads of calories), they sell for $1.49.

Chocolate chip cookies Amazingly, McDonald’s at 321 Boston Post Rd. has fantastic chocolate chip cookies. The chocolate is often still soft while the dough is slightly crunchy. The fast food restaurant’s oatmeal cookies are also first rate. They cost $1 for any combination of three cookies.

Pollo a la brasa cooked on the rotisserie at Misti Restaurant. The rotisserie chicken is accompanied by fries and salad.
