The drink/wine list is fairly extensive. Some specialty cocktails have local names like Washington Park, Sawpit Sour and Regent Street (all $9.50). A number of white and red wines, as well as a few sparkling ones, can be ordered by the glass, carafe or bottle. Bottles of wine, mostly Italian with a number also listed under “The Islands” and “The World,” range from $26 to $150. A small list of reserves go up to $700. I had two perfectly fine dry whites for $26 and $30 and especially liked the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, San Quirico 2008, described by our waiter as having a nutty flavor, which I found smooth and interesting.
Sophisticated, comfortable decor
Food preparation takes place behind the white marble counter at the center of the restaurant.
Urban Italian is another term that has been used to describe Arrosto, where the catch phrase “Be social. Eat well” describes the restaurant’s philosophy. It is stenciled on the front windows. Arrosto was designed to be a place where family and friends will gather for a great meal in a contemporary, energetic environment, continuing a tradition established long ago at this location. I’ll have to admit that at Arrosto’s opening, when it was jammed with people,
my first impression was that I didn’t particularly care for the decor, but it has grown on me each time I’ve returned when the restaurant was in full operation. Designed by Niemitz Design out of Boston, which has done all of Polistina’s restaurants, this expansive restaurant, which seats 230, is open and airy, sophisticated yet comfortable, making good use of the space. The bar is in the same place as it’s always been as you enter, and the shape is the same as the original Sawpit bar, said Longo. Then there’s a large area with high square tables and tall chairs with comfortable red seats and backs to match those at the bar where you can enjoy a drink or even eat dinner when it’s busy. At the edge of this area, to your right as you enter, is a comfortable booth with warm brown leather seating, then tables in front of the window. Just beyond the tall tables is a white marble counter around the yellow brick pizza oven, a focal point at Arrosto. Besides pizza making, cooking on the woodburning grill as well as salad and appetizer preparation are taking place in this central area behind the counter. With all this going on, the atmosphere is vibrant at this counter which is another option for seating. On the other side of the counter is another room with Please turn to page 6R

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Arrosto: Contemporary Italian cuisine served in a vibrant setting
Like many restaurants, Arrosto can get noisy when it’s busy, but I didn’t find the noise level offensive.
Out of the ordinary cuisine I have eaten at Arrosto on three occasions in three different areas of the restaurant and found all of them pleasant—at a table adjacent to the lounge on a Tuesday, in the Sawpit Room late on a Saturday night and in the room behind the pizza oven on a Sunday night. Service was overly attentive on the first occasion, a bit slow to get started but after that efficient on Saturday night and the same on Sunday night. We did have to ask for bread on Sunday. I was also surprised that on Saturday night we didn’t get
a wine bucket to keep a bottle of white wine chilled. Never did we feel rushed. The bread and bread sticks made on the premises are too good to pass up, particularly the focaccia but also the hard-crusted Terranova. Bread sticks are light, flavorful and seasoned with rock salt. You will no doubt be asking for more. Bread comes with a crock of delicious cannelloni bean and truffle oil spread. For Little Bites (all $6), I can recommend the Arancini— four lightly battered rice balls with spiced sottocenere cheese. They’re mild, not spicy, but yummy nonetheless. The Crab Crostini with lardo (seasoned bacon) and chili oil brought crabmeat on a thin crunchy toast with strips of lardo over the top seasoned with chili oil to perfectly spice up the delicate

crabmeat. I also had the Baby Beets with Pistachio Crema and Poppy Seeds, two kinds of small beats in a cream sauce seasoned with salt and poppy seeds. For appetizer, the lightly battered Frito Misto ($12) brought a healthy portion of calamari, shrimp and a skinny fish (very fishy) called white bait with a tasty lemon aioli sauce for dipping. The Roasted Root Vegetable Salad with Pumpkins Seeds ($9) was also excellent as was the generous portion of Arugula and Apple Salad ($7) and good-sized bowl of mild Celery Root Soup with Lacinato Kale and Lamb Belly ($7). The soup itself was a treat, but I’ve never been fond of lamb and one taste of that (which was in the middle of the soup bowl) was enough for me. I’ve discovered that I only like baby octopus and therefore wasn’t keen about the Octopus Salad with Radicchio, Herbs and Citrus ($11) which brought large pieces of the mollusk.

were crunchy, light and perfectly spiced. Generally a shrimp lover, I didn’t care for the grilled whole prawns with chili aioli, finding the grilling made them too charred for my liking. I haven’t yet tried the burger or sandwiches and only sampled the pizza at the restaurant opening, recalling it was thin and tasty, but I couldn’t give it a full review. The lunch and dinner menu is the same except during the day a lunch salad entrée such as salad with grilled chicken or shrimp is offered, said Polistina. Desserts ($7) are decadent. My favorite was Chocolate Nutella Budino, a chocolate mousse-type mixture full of crunchy pieces of hazelnut brittle and covered with slightly toasted marshmallow served in a small mason jar. Some new desserts have been added in the few weeks I’ve been eating at Arrosto. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bar was also yummy, served with peanut butter mousse and dark chocolate gelato, as was the creamy Sheeps Milk Ricotta Cheesecake with cranberry purée and candied rosemary.

booths and tables which merges into another section with a similar configuration. The earth tone color scheme carries throughout the restaurant, from the black, brown and beige open weave placemats to the brown and beige striped ribbons tying the white napkins, off-white covers with brown and orange stripes on the backs of the chairs and smoky brown glass candles on every table. There’s plenty of light from drop fixtures with exposed bulbs on the ceiling and attractive lamps with shades on the walls. Currently pine cone wreaths hang from red ribbons on the front windows for the holiday season while a large green wreath with a red bow hangs in the lounge area. The Sawpit Room is set apart at the back of the restaurant and can be booked for private parties of up to 50. It is also used for open dining on the weekends. This more intimate room has a fancier décor, white tablecloths covered with the same placemats, attractive brown paneling, dark green and light gray carpeting rather than wood on the floor, a working gas fireplace which provides a delightful ambiance and a few floor lamps. I sat in front of the fireplace on one occasion, and although I enjoyed the ambient light, it did get a bit warm. A few modern paintings and framed New Yorker cartoons decorate the walls throughout the restaurant. A lot of money went into the makeover of this restaurant, although Longo preferred to leave it at that rather than give a dollar figure.

The one pasta I tried (Ravioli with Lobster and Squash sautéed in Vanilla Brown Butter at $16/$38) was firm yet delicate and scrumptious. Two of us split the six ravioli. These, along with two appetizers, made for a great late night meal. For one meal our party of four ventured with the 64-ounce ribeye and were not disappointed. It was seasoned with rosemary and perfectly cooked medium rare. It was presented first and then sliced in the kitchen. We had a good amount of fat to cut off but still had plenty of meat for four. Since that meal needed a side, we went with the parmigianorosemary roasted potatoes ($6) which were perfectly satisfactory. Another side, the house made porcini-spiced potato chips ($6),
Eve, you can order from the regular menu until 7:30 p.m. Starting at 9 p.m., a 5-course prix-fixe dinner will be served (the menu was not complete as of press time). For $120 per person, you will get the dinner plus noisemakers, hats and a champagne toast. The Marketplace section of Arrosto where you can purchase Corbo’s creations to cook at home is expected to open in January. A variety of food products will also be sold there. Also coming at a later date: outdoor seating for 50 on the terrace underneath the large red awning. There’s a large private parking lot adjacent to Arrosto. However, when we visited on a Saturday night, the lot was full and we had to park nearby on Westchester Avenue.
